It's not long ago that trying to get 200HP more from an engine at its limit without forced induction or nitrous would have left you scratching your head with 0 results.Sasha Anis of MoTeC Canada and Mountain Pass Performance runs us through their Lotus Evora (Blue Lightning) EV conversion project and 700HP Nissan 350Z Hybrid setup which all use a mixture of OEM Tesla, Chevrolet and BMW motor and battery componentsSasha discusses how the goal for the Blue Lightning project was to have a complete OE feel including stability and traction control built-in using a MoTeC M150EV control unit rather than all the manual switches you often find in a race car. The limitations including software, range, heat and voltage management are touched on along with cost being one of the biggest barriers to entry for motorsport level setups at the moment. Luckily there are some options that MoTeC offer and some other simpler controllers out there already getting the ball rolling with plug and play solutions in the pipeline for the industry also.On the Hybrid 350Z front we learn about the 500HP All Motor VQ35 and its KERS system that sees up to 200HP extra on tap once more than 80% throttle has been requested. This setup gives the flexibility of going all out for a Time Attack application or having smaller amounts of power on tap for an entire race depending on driver and track demands. A MoTeC GPRP is used for engine and sequential gearbox control with a lot of the custom Blue Lightning firmware handling the electric motor side of the car.Lastly, we dive into the charging limitations for a KERS system. As the BMW i8 battery has some unknown parameters and is expensive, Sasha explains that it's a constant balance of managing voltage and heat to ensure batteries are not overcharged when they're close to full but have as much charge as they can safely when depleted to maximise performance, meaning the scale of charge is always shifting.Want to learn more about motorsport wiring? TESLA DELIVERS ‘FULL SELF-DRIVING' BETA VERSION 9 - Tesla began sending out over-the-air software updates for its long-awaited “Full Self-Driving” beta version 9, the definitely-not-autonomous-but-certainly-advanced driver assist system. - the software update (2021.4.18.12) began uploading after midnight on Friday, giving thousands of Tesla owners who have purchased the FSD option access to the feature - Musk has been promising v9 of the software for, well, a while now. He said in 2018 that the “long awaited” version of FSD would begin rolling out in August. He did it again in 2019, proclaiming that “a year from now” there would be “over a million cars with full self-driving, software, everything.” Earlier this month, he claimed that “FSD 9 beta is shipping soon.” - Release notes included with the update warn testers that “it may do the wrong thing at the worst time” and to avoid complacence. They also mention improvements to the cabin camera's driver monitoring to check for attentiveness, along with updated, larger visualizations on the in-car display Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/10/22570081/tesla-fsd-v9-beta-autopilot-update EU COMMISSION PLANS CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIREMENTS - According to a media report, the EU Commission is planning to give the member states concrete requirements for the expansion of the charging infrastructure as part of the eagerly awaited “Fit for 55” climate package. The package is to be published on 14 July. - the Commission wants to oblige the states to guarantee at least one high-performance charging station at intervals of no more than 60 kilometres along the most important European motorways by the end of 2025. - For heavy transport, the member states are also to ensure that there is a hydrogen filling station every 150 kilometres. The draft regulation on the infrastructure for alternative fuels also contains precise specifications on how powerful the charging stations must be in the years 2025, 2030 and 2035. The company has confirmed it will deliver both its R1T electric pickup truck and R1S three-row SUV in Europe, with orders opening in "Early 2022." This information came from Rivian Owners Forum via an email from Rivian's Customer Engagement Center to a potential customer in Europe. The email says to expect Rivian sales in Europe "some time in early 2022". The forum shared: "Rivian's plans for Europe have been under speculation for the past few months when it was reported that they were looking for factory locations in the United Kingdom, Germany and Hungary along with job posting to hire a "Senior Analyst, EMEA Delivery & Field Planning" (EMEA = Europe, Middle East & Africa". There was also a rumour that there could be smaller Rivian models for European and Chinese markets." Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/519251/rivian-confirms-2022-sales-europe/ MG TOPPLES TESLA AS EVERY SECOND CAR SOLD IN SWEDEN NOW ELECTRIC - Every second passenger car sold in Sweden in June was a plug-in electric vehicle – either a full battery EV or plug-in hybrid EV – with the Chinese made budget MG ZS EV beating the Tesla Model 3 to the top selling spot. - Before a sweeping shift in the country's tax code came into effect at the start of July, Swedish EV sales skyrocketed as vehicles registered before the tax change will be taxed according to the old rate. - June sale of EVs was likely juiced by a number of fleet-owners and dealers self-registering plug-in models so as to take advantage of the old rate. - The consistent changes and fluctuations in Sweden's tax code and EV sales has nevertheless pushed the country's EV market to be just as large as neighbouring Norway - less than 100 units separated Sweden from becoming Scandinavia's largest plug-in new passenger car market, with Norway registering 69,367 units and Sweden 69,280. The best seats, a lot of space – at least for our use, possibilities for our kayaks on the roof, possible to drag a trailer when needed, good enough range and charging speed, good infotainment system and a very safe car. I did sign up for a subscription of an XC40 with Care by Volvo in January, and the plan was to have it for some mounts and then change it to another of the EVs. But I still have the car and don't want to change it. So instead, I did book a Fjord Blue C40, the perfect vehicle and colour for driving around Norway next year. If I get it, I will drive the C40 from Fredrikstad in the south of Norway to Tromsø or maybe further north in the end of November. RAJEEV NARAYAN If I had to have only one car, for me it would have be a Tesla model Y. I drive about 80 miles a day and our non-Tesla DCFC infrastructure here in Texas is still very poor. For longer trips we use our PHEV Volt. My Chevy Bolt has over a 100K miles on it, and in fact I am looking at the model Y to replace it next year. GRANTON SMITH I already have it (Tesla Model 3 SR+), although this is a compromise car for me because being in good Ol' Fossil Fuel lovin' Australia - we're not exactly spoiled for choice. At the present time, I would not seriously consider anything other than a Tesla, because of the Supercharger network. Nothing comes even remotely close to the convenience, and the sheer number of charging stations - I can get wherever I need to go using a combination of the SC network, and the currently free NRMA rapid charger network - yes, even in a country as big as Australia (I live in the Central West of NSW) NICK CHRISTEN Sadly, my answer is 0. there is nothing large enough for my family (we have 8 kids; there is no suburban or other large vehicle that is electric currently…at least not in the US) DAVID JOHNSON I actually answered this in real life with my 3 year lease for the Toyota Prius Prime. Here in Central NY State we don't have lots of charging options. A PHEV made perfect sense in terms of satisfying my daily driving needs (98% EV only miles so far) and an ability to take impromptu road trips without any planning or apprehension. I'm currently getting 4.9 mi/KWh which is nearly 20% better than a Tesla and don't really miss the longer range. If my ~33 mi range could go to 50 or 70 mi, I don't think I'd ever need any more than that. MICHAEL LULCHAK I would go for the Tesla Model Y Long Range. The range of the Mach E is disappointing, and the price of the Mach E is close enough to the Tesla that we would be silly to purchase the Mach E. . The problems that Hyundai have had with batteries, and how they have (NOT) handled it suggests to me that their user experience has not changed for the better. So the hyundai (and by association the Kia) are not options for us. At all. MARK RICHARDS I currently drive a Bolt, but I am looking to buy an Ioniq 5 AWD when available this fall. f I had to buy an EV today and drive it for 3 years, I'd probably go pick up a Bolt EUV. Small, fast, and now has ACC, Lane Keep, and even super cruise. Second choice would be the ID.4, BUT in the USA we only have the anemic 200HP 0-60 in 8.5 second version available today. ATLE YRI The only car for three years. I would stick with the car I already have: VW ID.4 1st Max. Plenty of space for both luggage and people. Long range and charges quickly should there be a need for it. Very comfortable, lots of new technology and it gets better with each upgrade that comes OTA. RON BARBER, SAN JOSE The current trophy holder of the Electric Cannon Ball Run. From Jan 1, 2021. Porsche Taycan 4S. Reasons: 1. Vehicle Dynamics, 2. Build Quality, 3. Charging Speed 260-270kW to 43%. BRENDAN HUTCHINS I'd still wait for my Cybertruck reservation and try to get by without it until it's out. I'm so unbelievably excited for it. If for some reason I couldn't wait, I'd buy the Ford Lightning, cause even though I hate the look of it, I do love the vehicle to grid ability and more. MARK ORRICO I'm quite pleased with my Niro, and I am stuck with it for 3 years as it's a lease. Any car in my price range currently available I'd probably stick with the Niro truthfully. If I was going to get away from my price range definitely the Porsche Taycan, it like the turbo s but would accept any one of them. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 17th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. NEWS IN BRIEF: * Tesla Model 3 cumulative production has now exceeded 50,000 according to the Bloomberg tracker, which has a bit of lag but has proven a close estimation * The Dutch city of Delft is the first city worldwide to have an electric vehicle charging station equipped with a pole that holds an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). * Ask Autoline is a one hour Q&A with John from Autoline about that Tesla Model 3 teardown and more from Sandy Munro LONG RANGE NISSAN LEAF E-PLUS COMING IN 2019, WILL HAVE 200 HP The next Nissan LEAF now has a confirmed name - the E-Plus Autoguide for the scoop: "The long-range Nissan Leaf, which will arrive for the 2019 model year, will get a boost in power and will be called E-Plus, the Japanese automaker has confirmed to AutoGuide. Speaking at a special event promoting the automaker’s upcoming Formula E race program, Nissan’s director of EV Marketing and Sales Strategy, Brian Maragno, revealed some details about the anticipated long-range Leaf. Maragno said the larger battery Leaf will receive the ‘E-Plus’ badge and will get a boost in power over the 40 kWh version. The 40 kWh Leaf is rated at 142hp, but the long-range model will have 200 hp on tap. " AutoEvolution say: "At the EVS29 electric vehicle convention in 2016, Nissan let it slip that it’s working on a 60-kWh battery. In all likelihood, it is this battery that we’ll find in the E-Plus, shadowing the capacity and range of the entry-level version of the Tesla Model 3." https://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2018/07/long-range-nissan-leaf-e-plus-coming-2019-will-200-hp.html https://www.autoevolution.com/news/new-nissan-leaf-version-coming-in-2019-confirmed-to-be-called-e-plus-127125.html JAGUAR LAND ROVER HAS PARTNERED WITH PLUGSURFING "Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with Plugsurfing to supply a premium charging service for its electric vehicles in selected markets in Europe. Drivers choosing an all-electric Jaguar I-PACE performance SUV will be given free access to the Jaguar Public Charging app, whilst Range Rover or Range Rover Sport plug-in petrol-electric hybrid (PHEV) customers can download the Land Rover Public Charging app for free. Both apps easily locate 70,000 charging points and pay for the charging session. Customers will also receive a universal charging card that allows them to use most charging points across Europe. Through the apps, Jaguar and Land Rover electric vehicle drivers can see whether a charging station is available or occupied. Drivers can choose to rapid charge before reaching their destination or charge at normal speed upon arrival." "There are two packages on offer - a fixed monthly fee or Pay As You Go. Each package, which includes the universal charging key and app download information, is available through the Jaguar and Land Rover retailer network. https://media.jaguarlandrover.com/news/2018/07/plugsurfing-puts-jaguar-and-land-rover-drivers-road-easier-charging PORSCHE TAYCAN: ORDERS FOR BRAND'S FIRST EV ALREADY BUILDING "Customers have begun ordering the Porsche Taycan, the firm’s first all-electric vehicle, despite the production version of the car not even being revealed yet, UK managing director Alexander Pollich has said." and according to Jim Holder writing for Autocar: "Order books opened earlier this month, with Pollich confirming that customers were keen to reserve early cars despite the car only being revealed as a concept - called Mission E. He did not confirm order numbers, however. The production car is expected to be revealed for the first time in 2019, ahead of hitting roads in 2020." "The Taycan sits on a new architecture, named J1 by Porsche. The brand's first EV will feature 800V charging technology that is intended to future-proof the car for several years after it hits the market, and company officials have already confirmed it is designed to enable fast-charging to 80% of the car’s range in just 15 minutes." TESLA HIRING SPREE IN JULY "Several months ago, Tesla went on a massive hiring spree as it geared up production, marketing, and customer touchpoints for accelerated deliveries of its more-affordable Model 3" according to Joshua Fruhlinger at thinknum.com: "Then the company let go of 9% of its workforce in an effort to make things a bit more efficient as it came under fire from all angles as it struggled to deliver cars. So it is with an equal mix of fascination and trepidation that we report that Tesla is embarking on another hiring spree. On July 1, 2018, the company listed 1,662 openings. As of yesterday, the company has 1,974 open positions. That's a jump of 19% in just over 2 weeks." Whereas layers of management seemed to be the focus of the previous reduction in workforce, these openings are sales or customer facing. 85 of the positions advertised are for Customer Experience Specialist. https://media.thinknum.com/articles/tesla-hiring-activity-jumped-19-since-july-1/ MODEL 3 DUAL MOTOR AND PERFORMANCE VERSIONS ARE NOW EPA-RATED On Monday of this week the Model 3 Performance and Dual Motor, or P3 and P3D if you like, were officially rated by the EPA which opens the door for those cars to be delivered. Fred Lambert at Electrek says: "The EPA has now confirmed that both the Performance and non-Performance Dual Motor versions have a 116-MPGe rating with 120 MPGe for city driving and 112 MPGe for highway driving. As for the range, they both get officially rated at 310 miles on a single charge, like the Long Range rear-wheel-drive version, but the dual motor Model 3 vehicles officially have an efficiency of 29 kWh per 100 miles versus 26 kWh per 100 miles for the single motor version." https://electrek.co/2018/07/17/tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-versions-official-epa-ratings/ COMMUNITY YouTube comments You can listen to all previous 183 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Welcome to Stuff I Found Out Today on the Internet, this is a show that brings you, the unknown, forgotten or stuff i was oblivious too. This is a way to enhance your daily knowledge and have something to talk about during lunch. These are not current events although some might make their way in. This is stuff that happened in the past. Now onward!!!!!we all know and are aware of the relationship between america and soviet union have never been the most perfect one. back in 1980’s these 2 were at it for domination of the High-tech space, but by 91 the soviet union collapsed, leaving america as the world's superpower. after this fall, most of their equipment was decommissioned or simply left to rot away in their harbours. during this time the military miraculously found a billion, with a B, rubles, for the “Project 949A Antey”.project 949A antey is code name for a class of submarines, that were considered to be one of the largest cruise missile submarines in service at the time, measuring 505 ft in length, beam of 60ft, and a draft of 29.5ft. this sub was powered by 2-OK-650b nuclear reactors, 2 steam turbines and 2, 7 blades propellers, delivering an astonishing 99,200HP to the rear propellers. this monster was launched in 1994, later to find its demise on august 12 of 2000. When during a exercise routine one of its hydrogen powered dummy torpedoes sprung a leak from a faulty weld seam, once a catalyst was applied the gas expanded by a factor of 5000. this ruptured the kerosene tanks causing a explosion equal to 500lb of TNT, 135 seconds later another explosion, this time equal to 7 tons of TNT eruption made a large hole in the hull of the sub.BREAKING NEWS: according to the CDC in 2013 80% of americans are not getting the recommended amount of daily exercise. this was 2013, and in 2015 people still dont give a shit.back to the regular scheduled programdo you know what phosphene is? this is when a person experiences seeing light when there is no light around us making its way into your eyes. a good example of this is when we rub our eyes when they are closed. this pressure stimulates the cells found on the retina. this is called pressure phosphene. another way to see these phosphenes is from either sneezing, laughing, heavy coughing, blowing your nose, being hit in the head or low blood pressure.from seeing stars to actual starts, NASA’s vehicle assembly building or VAB, is so big, you wanna know how big it is? It’s 129,428,000 cubic feet big, its one of the largest buildings in the world by volume. this is a single story building, with its roof reaching 525 ft in height. Has 10 tons of AC equipment to cool it down, 125 ventilators on the roof supported by 4 large air handlers to help keep the florida moisture under control, the air inside the building can be 100% replaced within 1 hour. This building is so big, and has a such a massive volume that on humid days you can see rain clouds forming below the ceiling.Speaking of florida, and flying objects, the most bizarre and unexpected, unless it comes out of florida, happened.this one was back in 94 in Homestead, florida, where the local neighborhood crime watch was having their first meeting in someone's backyard. The chief of police was there, and also crime prevention officer, standing next to a pool, addressing the local neighborhood watch. As the Chief is trying to explain to the people what to look for, the sound of a low flying airplane, makes his speech very difficult. As is passes by, everyone is looking up, and they see something falling from the airplane, straight down. Turns out it was cocaine, 75 lbs worth of cocaine . multiple of these bales were dropped as they airplane was being chased by a U.S. customs aircraft.that's all the time we have today, hope i enhanced your knowledge, share the podcast, leave a comment, leave a review and some stars, and i’ll see you later.
