The federal government gave Virginia more than $100 million to create Alternative Fuel Corridors including fast chargers for electric cars.
ESB ecars has today announced a planned price decrease across its public EV charging network in the Republic of Ireland, which will be effective from Friday, 21st June. This will see unit rates for High-Power (200kW) chargers reduce by 13%, Fast chargers reduce by 12% and Standard chargers reduce by 8%. Contactless payments will also be available on High-Power Chargers starting at the end of this week. The existing one-off overstay fee of €8 has been replaced by a more progressive, incremental fee to further encourage drivers to free up charge points for other drivers when finished charging.?ESB's most recent customer survey found that 76% of respondents support the overstay fee.?The new overstay fee structure is 50c/min and kicks in after 45 minutes on High-Power and Fast chargers and after 10 hours on Standard chargers. Commenting on the price reduction, John Byrne, Head of eMobility at ESB, said: "We are pleased to announce a reduction of prices across our extensive EV public charging network. We are lowering our prices following reductions in wholesale energy costs while continuing to upgrade and improve our charging infrastructure across the country. We keep our prices under constant review and are committed to providing value to our customers with competitive prices." To ensure customers are notified of when overstay fees will apply, ESB is encouraging all drivers to turn on notifications on the ESB ecar connect app. Customers will receive push notifications as a reminder about the overstay fee when they start their charge. ESB has installed 42 multi-vehicle, high-power charging hubs nationwide over the past two years and replaced over 300 chargers to increase the speed and capacity of the charging network. ESB now has over 1,600 public charge points in place across the country with an average reliability rate of 98%. For more information, visit esb.ie/ecars.
Meet Heiko Schmidt, VP of Network Strategy and Monetization at Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging North America. Adam Hoffer, director of excise tax policy at the Tax Foundation in La Crosse, in studio to discuss paying NCAA Division I athletes, Wisconsin dishing out $23 million for an EV charging network, and selling the Brewers Am-Fam Field for $1. The meat of the conversation (23:00) was about the NCAA recently settling a host of antitrust claims and beginning the framework of paying NCAA Division I athletes. Hoffer, who taught sports economics at UW-La Crosse, has become a national expert in the developing story, having done research NCAA athletic departments. Everyone is trying to answer questions in how these departments work, where the money comes from and what it means for the future of the NCAA. Before that (8:30), however, we talked a bit about the EV charging network the state of Wisconsin has started to set the table for, dishing out $23 million to businesses, including $8 million to Kwik Trip. We also hit on (15:15) a recent La Crosse Talk PM conversation with Milwaukee Brewers president Rich Schlesinger, where we asked him if, instead of $500 million in public funding to renovate Am-Fam Field, what if the state just sold the Brewers the stadium for $1. We began the show talking quick about real estate and what Hoffer does at the Tax Foundation — essentially, explaining what excise tax policy is, which we learned is taxes on things like marijuana, alcohol and sports gambling.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shoot us a Text. It's Tuesday and we're just getting started as we talk about a new entrant to the autonomy game. We also cover Rivian's new charging network plans as well as a rumored potential partnership with Apple. Show Notes with links:Wayve Technologies, a pioneering self-driving car startup, has secured over $1 billion in investment to enhance AI-based autonomous driving solutions for the automotive industry. The impressive funding round includes major players like SoftBank, Nvidia, and Microsoft, aiming to boost AI capabilities in vehicles. The funds will fuel Wayve's global expansion, enhance data diversity, and strengthen partnerships, pushing the frontier of driving automation.Wayve's unique 'embodied AI' allows cars to understand and learn from human behavior, improving interaction and safety in unpredictable driving conditions.SoftBank's Kentaro Matsui said,"Vehicles can now interpret their surroundings like humans, enabling enhanced decision-making that promises higher safety standards,"U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised the investment, underscoring Britain's growing influence in the global AI industry.Rivian has announced a next-gen charging network prototype designed to service all EVs, positioning itself as a key player in expanding EV infrastructure. The new charging stations feature a taller profile and longer cables, accommodating various EV charging port locations, including vehicles with NACS ports using adaptors.Rivian does plan to integrate the new SAE J3400 universal NACS ports into their network. The Rivian Adventure Network will extend its reach, supporting EVs with both 400- and 800-volt systems along key travel routes.Paul Frey, VP of Battery, Charging, and Adventure Products said, "By broadening access to our Rivian Adventure Network — powered by 100% renewable energy — we are supporting both of these critical goals while also encouraging more people to embark on their next adventure in an EV." Rivian is set to begin retrofitting existing locations with the new chargers later this year, including special versions for vehicles towing trailers. Now this is a little more on the side of a "rumor" at this point, but Apple may not have shelved its electric vehicle dreams entirely, with new whispers suggesting a potential partnership with Rivian. After halting its own Project Titan, Apple is reportedly exploring collaboration with a U.S. EV startup, with Rivian named as a possible partner.Sources close to the supply chain hint at Apple's interest in leveraging its decade of EV and autonomous driving research in partnership, rather than going it alone.Such a collaboration could infuse Rivian with crucial capital as it gears up to enhance production of its new EV models. The details of what this partnership might entail remain vague, feeding into the speculative nature of the report from DigiTimes. There is no doubt that the implications for both companiHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Jill and Tom are both in studio today for another topic-packed show. Tom opened the episode acknowledging the installation of the first EV charging station under the provisions of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Act, signed into law in 2021. The first unit went live at a Flying J gas station in Ohio earlier this week. Jill and Tom went on to discuss Jill's evaluation of a Starbucks Coffee/Volvo joint effort. This past week Jill drove electric Volvo vehicles from Denver, Colorado to Seattle, Washington, charging the cars only at Starbucks locations along the way equipped with high-speed Volvo-sponsored chargers. Listen in for more on this unique cooperative exercise—and what Jill ordered to drink at each stop. In the second segment Jill and Tom are joined by Consumer Report's Steven Elek. Steven gave the hosts the lowdown on the organization's latest Auto Reliability Study. Steven shared insights into how and why electric vehicles are proving problematic for some owners, and walked Jill and Tom through top-ten list of most-reliable car brands. The list includes a few surprises. In the final segment, Jill is subjected to Tom's “Car Sales in Europe” quiz, capped by a Kikkoman soy-sauce bonus question. Because Jill has not yet listened to last week's episode, Tom explained to her why he was looking to shoot a water buffalo.

Demand for electric vehicles is growing and a new report forecasts that one out of every five vehicles sold worldwide this year will be electric. But charging those vehicles and getting the power you need when you want it can be more complicated. Science Correspondent Miles O'Brien found that out for himself on a road trip in California. He reports in conjunction with Nova's "Chasing Carbon Zero." PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
Sales of electric vehicles have really picked up in the last year or so, but at just shy of 6% of all cars sold in the U.S. They’ve still got a long way to go before they hit mass adoption, like the long way to go to find a charger in many areas of the country.
