Shoot us a Text. It's finally Friday as we cover how European plug-in hybrid technology may guide US regulations, BMW is at it again charging monthly for physical hardware, we cover the data breach affecting BILLIONS, and how Gen Z feels more detached than ever.Show Notes with links:European regulations are driving the development of plug-in hybrids with significantly longer electric ranges, offering a glimpse of what might be coming to the U.S.Some European plug-in hybrids now offer electric ranges of up to 84 miles, more than double what's currently available in the U.S.In comparison, U.S. plug-in hybrids like the Toyota Prius Prime max out at 45 miles of electric range, with most models offering between 25-35 miles.California's regulation changes will drive similar advancements in the U.S., requiring plug-in hybrids to achieve a minimum range of 43 miles by 2028 and 70 miles after that.BMW is once again sparking debate with its decision to charge U.S. customers to unlock features that are already physically installed in their vehicles.BMW is requiring payments to activate Adaptive Suspension on vehicles where it wasn't selected at purchase, despite the hardware being pre-installed.Customers can either subscribe monthly or yearly or pay a one-time $500 fee to activate the feature.A shocking data breach has exposed the personal information of billions, with serious implications for those affected.Over 2.9 billion records, including Social Security numbers, were allegedly stolen from National Public Data (NPD), a Florida-based background-check company. The breach is attributed to the USDod group, which claims to have stolen the data and is offering it for sale on the dark web for $3.5 million. While NPD has not officially confirmed the breach, it has acknowledged receiving inquiries and is investigating the claims.Multiple class-action lawsuits have been filed against NPD for failing to protect personal data, and individuals affected are encouraged to seek legal advice.Employee disengagement is on the rise, and experts are warning of a looming "Great Detachment," particularly among Gen Z workers.Gen Z is on track to outnumber boomers in the workforce this year and are expected to make up 27% of it by 2025.The American Staffing Association warns that disengaged employees could cost the global economy over $8 trillions.Since 2020, employees feel less committed to their roles, partly due to their companies' perceived lack of commitment. The CEO of Applied, Khyati Sundaram notes: Gen Z is vocal about work-life balance and transparency, which some older generations mistake for disengagement or laziness. Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

The Toyota Prius might not have been a style icon when it launched in 1997, but it did quickly become a symbol of fuel savings. The fuel-sipper entered its fifth generation with the 2023 model year and ushered in a new era for ‘Yota's hybrid. This new Prius sports a wholly redesigned shell but sticks with traditional hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. This Prius Prime tester features a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle I4 that works with an eCVT to make a combined 220 hp. This Prius PHEV also packs 13.6 kWh, which Toyota says can move the Prius Prime over 40 miles on with only its electric motors.  On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Toyota Prius and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the '24 Prius and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of the '24 Prius Prime. Turley then addresses a study indicating that electric vehicles (EVs) release more toxic emissions than gas-powered cars due to tire wear, shedding light on overlooked environmental impacts. Surprisingly, the Toyota Prius Prime emerges as the greenest car in America, emphasizing the role of hybrid vehicles in reducing emissions. Additionally, a study warns of potential blackouts in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic electric grids by 2028, underscoring the importance of backup power solutions. We're going to make the most of this bonus leap-year day as we talk about something that impacts the car shopping process most. We also cover the undisputed most efficient vehicle, as well as the potentially undisputed fastest EV.You may very well be surprised to hear that the most efficient vehicle you can drive still has an ICE engine in it. New EVs still can't beat the efficiency of a plug-in hybrid like the Toyota Prius Prime. The Toyota Prius Prime is outperforming the latest fully-electric vehicles in the U.S., holding onto its title as the greenest car.Despite the rise in EVs, none have surpassed the efficiency of the Prius Prime, thanks to its smaller size and lighter weight. The GreenerCars report of 2024 finds the Prius Prime leading with a green score of 71 out of 100, assessing emissions from manufacture to road use. For reference, the EV Hummer scored a 26. The Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 had the lowest score at 20. While the middle of the list included the Toyota Sienna Hybrid (55) and the Lexus ES 300h (59)A recent survey reveals that the dealership experience significantly influences car buyers, boosting their confidence in their purchase decisions and impacting their vehicle choice.ChangeUp's survey found that 84% of car buyers felt their dealership visit influenced their buying decision, with 90% gaining confidence in their choice from the experience. Most surprisingly, Millennials and Gen Z shoppers, in particular, value the dealership visit highly, with a significant percentage unsure of their vehicle choice until visiting in person."The dealership is so much more than just a transactional space," says Lee Carpenter of ChangeUp, emphasizing the opportunity to design a meaningful retail experience.Wendy's is stirring the pot with its announcement of dynamic menu pricing, a strategy that could change how we pay for fast food, but recent clarifications issued after significant blow-back suggest a more nuanced approach than initially perceived.Wendy's was to test dynamic pricing, potentially adjusting the cost of items like the Dave's Single based on demand, with a $20 million investment in digital menu boards to facilitate real-time changes. But then an onslaught of critics and consumers expressed concerns over the fairness and reception of fluctuating prices, drawing parallels to failed experiments like Coca-Cola's temperature-based pricing and the potential for perceived price gougingFollowing backlash, Wendy's quickly clarified that "surge pricing" during peak hours is not on the table, reassuring customers that the goal is to offer discounts and value during slower times, not to raise prices during high demand.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Also, we discuss the differences of all-wheel-drive systems on ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles and EVs, and how to improve traction in wintry weather driving.    More info on the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime here: https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/hybrids-evs/2023-prius-prime-review-a5923308955/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT Ratings and test results on every car CR purchases and tests: https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT     SHOW NOTES ----------------------------------- 00:00 - Introduction 00:15 - First Impressions: 2023 Toyota Prius Prime 02:28 - Prime vs Regular Prius 05:31 - Traffic Jam Assist 07:19 - Safety Features 10:40 - How it Drives 13:26 - Controls 15:41 - Is it worth the extra cost? 21:06 - Question #1: What is a fuel efficient alternative for a Scion tC? 27:25 - What are some differences between gas powered vehicles and EV's all-wheel drive systems?     ----------------------------------   Redesigned 2023 Toyota Prius Prime Gets Longer Electric-Only Range https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/hybrids-evs/2023-prius-prime-review-a5923308955/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT   2023 Toyota Prius Prime https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/toyota/prius-prime/2023/overview/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT   Best Hybrid Cars for Under $35,000 https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/fuel-economy-efficiency/best-hybrid-cars-from-consumer-reports-tests-a5841270718/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT   Everything You Need to Know About Leasing an EV or PHEV With a Tax Credit https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/what-to-know-about-leasing-an-ev-or-phev-with-tax-credit-a3007689035/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT   Redesigned 2023 Toyota Prius Trades Practicality for Style https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/hybrids-evs/2023-toyota-prius-review-a1192095682/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT   Car Safety Guide https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-safety/car-safety-guide-a6462424223/?EXTKEY=YSOCIAL_YT     ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts? Are unpopular and sorta strange cars really actually good? That's the question this week's episode is pursuing as our hosts drive some weird and wonderful cars that have had a bad reputation in the past. First up Benjamin drives the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime, aka "the sexy Prius." With 44 miles of all electric range, the Prius Prime is no longer the geeky favourite of Leonardo DiCaprio, but a surprisingly good looking, functional car that isn't too bad to drive, or so Benjamin says. Listen the whole segment to get his final say, not to mention a fun tangent about other phevs that disappeared over the years. Then Sami brings up the 2024 Kia Carnival, which played dad van duties when his extended family dropped in. With tons of tech, space and cool powered second row seats, the Carnival should be a hit with families, but Sami says the Korean minivan has a fatal flaw which may make it fall out of favor with those looking for a three row superstar. On the other hand, Benjamin's recent moving experience with the 2023 Chrysler Pacifica PHEV suggests that you don't need a family to thoroughly test a van, especially one as efficient as this particular hybrid. Thanks for listening! See you all next week!

For some owners, a plug-in hybrid is the best of all worlds. There's electric range to cover the commutes, switch to gasoline for easy long road trips. The 3rd generation Prius Prime (based on the 5th gen Prius Hybrid) is a significant upgrade. At up to 44 miles of EV driving, it has significantly more gas-free range, it's noticeably quicker and is a swan to the outgoing ugly duckling. Tom Voelk travels to a Toyota event in Carlsbad, California to check out a well-equipped XSE Premium in Guardian Gray that should MSRP for around $43,000 when the Prime becomes available in May. And he's joined by John Voelcker with Green Car Reports and a contributing editor to Car and Driver.   Tom attended a Toyota event to preview the Prius Prime. His opinions remain his own.   Prius Prime is not eligible for federal tax credits. Check with your state.

Some very important vehicles are being introduced at the New York Auto Show, which is going on right now, and we'll have all the highlights for you in this episode of America on the Road. Perhaps the most important of the new production models is the all-electric 2024 Kia EV9 SUV. The first three-row electric vehicle SUV from Kia, the EV9 is the flagship of the automaker's global Plan S strategy and one of the first mainstream three-row battery-electric EVs from a mass market brand. The Kia EV9's standard 800-volt electrical architecture enables ultrafast recharging on high-speed DC chargers. Kia says the EV's battery pack is designed to go from a 10 to 80 percent state of charge in under 25 minutes. With an optional 99.8-kWh battery, a single-motor configuration of the EV9 could achieve 300 miles of all-electric range. And when it comes to predicted range, Ram can top that with its just-introduced all-new 2025 Ram 1500 REV full-size pickup. When it finally comes to market to compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning, Ram suggested it will have a targeted range of up to 500 miles. Jeep pulled the wraps off a heavily revised 2024 Wrangler at the New York Show. Among the highlights are an available factory-supplied Warn winch, a new version of the iconic seven-slot grille, standard side curtain airbags, and a 12.3-inch Uconnect Touchscreen infotainment system. Our guest for you this week is Jay Joseph, the vice president of the Sustainability & Business Development unit for American Honda Motor Co. He oversees the company's renewable energy, resource circulation, and new business development in the United States. We will talk with him about Honda's hydrogen power efforts globally and in the United States. In this week's road test segment, Host Jack Nerad will chronicle his driving experience in the all-new 2023 Toyota Prius Prime, the latest plug-in hybrid version of the vehicle that put hybrids on the map in the United States. From its looks to the way it handles day-to-day driving, the model is totally transformed. And Nerad will tell you why he thinks it's the best Prius ever. Also in this week's road test segment, Co-host Chris Teague will detail his week-long evaluation of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Adventure, an off-road-oriented trim. He got the opportunity to put the SUV through its paces as the final winds of winter howled through Maine. All that and much more is coming up in this episode of America on the Road.

The Toyota Prius is arguably the most well-known hybrid vehicle in the world, and its Prime-badged plug-in hybrid is right there with it. Launched at the start of the new millennium, the Toyota Prius has helped push hybrid powertrains to the forefront of American consumers. The plug-in Prius Prime joined the Prius nameplate in 2012 and entered its current generation in 2016. Powering the current Prius Prime is a 1.8-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that feeds Toyota's Electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Combining the engine with the electric motor, the Prius Prime throws 121 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. Just down from the Prius Prime at your local Toyota dealer is the Toyota Sequoia: a V8-powered, body-on-frame SUV. The Sequoia launched its second-generation effort all the way back in 2007 and hasn't changed significantly in the last 15 years. While Toyota has announced and shown the next-generation Sequoia, it's still waiting to head into production. That next-generation Sequoia will ditch the 381 hp and 401 hp 5.7-liter V8 and replace it with a turbocharged V6. Still, the second-generation Sequoia offers off-road capability and bold styling, if you can't wait for its replacement. On this bonus episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren sits down with Autoweek's Editor in Chief Natalie Neff to talk about her time with this unlikely pair of Toyotas. They talk about the driving dynamics and experiences with both of these Toyotas and show where both shine and both falter. The pair also break down the constantly changing SUV and small car landscape and the growing new car crisis.

Welcome to a new Patreon ProducerPRABHAT VAZE VW POISED TO UNVEIL RETRO-MICROBUS EV IN MARCH - Volkswagen Group plans to unveil the ID Buzz, an electric iteration of its iconic hippie-era microbus, on March 9. CEO Herbert Diess announced the date Thursday in a Twitter post that sketched out the contours of the new design, which draws on the lines of the original model. - VW's original microbus -- the colorful, bread loaf-shaped van that was a regular sight in the 1960s at music festivals including Woodstock -- has a dedicated fan following. Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/cars-concepts/vw-poised-unveil-retro-microbus-ev-march VOLKSWAGEN TO PREMIERE RETRO ID BUZZ EV ON 9 MARCH - The model is planned for UK sale during the latter half of 2022 and will become Volkswagen's fourth dedicated electric model, following the ID 3, ID 4 and newly unveiled ID 5. - It will also be the first ID model to be offered both as a passenger vehicle and a commercial vehicle, with production planned to take place at VW's commercial vehicle plant in Hannover, Germany from early this year. - Based on Volkswagen's MEB electric vehicle platform, the new MPV will be offered in both standard- and long-wheelbase guises - The production ID Buzz adopts a squarer shape than the earlier concept in a move that, Volkswagen officials have told Autocar, is aimed at providing it with maximum interior space. - As with the Microbus, the production version of the ID Buzz adopts two conventional front-hinged doors at the front as well as two parallel sliding doors at the rear. Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/electric-cars/volkswagen-premiere-retro-id-buzz-ev-9-march US: TOYOTA SOLD OVER 52,000 PLUG-IN CARS IN 2021 - In 2021, Toyota offered two plug-in hybrids: the Toyota Prius Prime and Toyota RAV4 Prime, while Lexus launched the all-new Lexus NX 450h+ in December (18 units). The total Toyota brand volume was:  Q4: 10,376 (up 76%) at 2.5% share 2021: 52,749 (up 195%) at 2.6% share - The Toyota RAV4 Prime noted a relatively strong Q4 with 7,741 units and a total of 27,703 units in 2021. - The aging Toyota Prius Prime (the 2nd model evolution after the original Prius PHEV) noted 2,635 units in Q4 (down 29% year-over-year). However, the year 2021 was the second-best year for the plug-in hybrid Prius. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/558967/us-toyota-plugin-sales-2021/ - The incentive has a limit of 200,000 units per manufacturer, which was reached in 2018 by Tesla and shortly thereafter by General Motors. Reaching the limit triggers the phase out of the incentive, over the following six quarters. Tesla lost its eligibility for the federal tax credit with the end of 2019, while GM lost it on April 1, 2020. - Recently, Lexus started sales of the plug-in hybrid Lexus NX 450h+ (18 units in December), which, as far as we know, adds to the Toyota counter, marginally increasing the total. - It means that those who are waiting for the launch of the Toyota bZ4X in mid-2022 will be only shortly supported by the full incentive. - That should make the Subaru Solterra noticeably more attractive, as it's basically the same car, but eligible for the incentive. Cruise was initially supposed to commercialize an autonomous ride-hailing fleet in San Francisco in 2019 but indefinitely delayed those plans to conduct further testing and acquire needed permits. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/05/gm-ceo-mary-barra-unveils-new-self-driving-cadillac-concept-vehicle.html RESIDENTIAL PARKING OPTIONS AND ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY WILL IMPACT ELECTRIC VEHICLE ADOPTION - Access to charging infrastructure is one of the biggest barriers to plug-in vehicle adoption. In an online survey conducted in May of 2020, respondents provided information on their household parking options, existing electrical access, and potential electrical access. - Parking for single-family detached housing (SFH Detached) was most often a driveway/carport, followed by a personal garage or on-street parking. Most of those with a personal garage had electrical access or potential electrical access, while less than half of those with driveways/carports had electrical access. - SFH Attached housing had a smaller share of electrical access for their parking in personal garages and driveways/carports. Apartment residents had the least access, with each of the three apartment categories having less than 25% access or potential access to electricity. He said in 2018 that the “long awaited” version of FSD would begin rolling out in August. He did it again in 2019, proclaiming that “a year from now” there would be “over a million cars with full self-driving, software, everything.” Earlier this month, he claimed that “FSD 9 beta is shipping soon.”   - Release notes included with the update warn testers that “it may do the wrong thing at the worst time” and to avoid complacence. There was also a rumour that there could be smaller Rivian models for European and Chinese markets."    Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/519251/rivian-confirms-2022-sales-europe/   MG TOPPLES TESLA AS EVERY SECOND CAR SOLD IN SWEDEN NOW ELECTRIC   - Every second passenger car sold in Sweden in June was a plug-in electric vehicle – either a full battery EV or plug-in hybrid EV – with the Chinese made budget MG ZS EV beating the Tesla Model 3 to the top selling spot.   - Before a sweeping shift in the country's tax code came into effect at the start of July, Swedish EV sales skyrocketed as vehicles registered before the tax change will be taxed according to the old rate.   - June sale of EVs was likely juiced by a number of fleet-owners and dealers self-registering plug-in models so as to take advantage of the old rate.   - The consistent changes and fluctuations in Sweden's tax code and EV sales has nevertheless pushed the country's EV market to be just as large as neighbouring Norway   - less than 100 units separated Sweden from becoming Scandinavia's largest plug-in new passenger car market, with Norway registering 69,367 units and Sweden 69,280.   Original Source : https://thedriven.io/2021/07/09/mg-topples-tesla-as-every-second-car-sold-in-sweden-now-electric/       2023 HYUNDAI IONIQ 6 SPIED WITH DIGITAL SIDE MIRRORS   Original Source : https://www.carscoops.com/2021/07/2023-hyundai-ioniq-6-spied-with-digital-side-mirrors/   VOLVO'S C40 RECHARGE IS A SOLID SECOND STAB AT AN EV Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/copy-of-volvos-c-40-recharge-is-a-solid-second-stab-at-an-ev-163057572.html   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   JAN TORE from EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM As the perfect match of comfort, practicality, performance and price, my choice of car on the market today is the Volvo XC40, and I would be happy to drive it for another three years. The best seats, a lot of space – at least for our use, possibilities for our kayaks on the roof, possible to drag a trailer when needed, good enough range and charging speed, good infotainment system and a very safe car.    I did sign up for a subscription of an XC40 with Care by Volvo in January, and the plan was to have it for some mounts and then change it to another of the EVs. But I still have the car and don't want to change it. So instead, I did book a Fjord Blue C40, the perfect vehicle and colour for driving around Norway next year. If I get it, I will drive the C40 from Fredrikstad in the south of Norway to Tromsø or maybe further north in the end of November.     RAJEEV NARAYAN If I had to have only one car, for me it would have be a Tesla model Y. I drive about 80 miles a day and our non-Tesla DCFC infrastructure here in Texas is still very poor. For longer trips we use our PHEV Volt. My Chevy Bolt has over a 100K miles on it, and in fact I am looking at the model Y to replace it next year.   GRANTON SMITH I already have it (Tesla Model 3 SR+), although this is a compromise car for me because being in good Ol' Fossil Fuel lovin' Australia - we're not exactly spoiled for choice. At the present time, I would not seriously consider anything other than a Tesla, because of the Supercharger network. Nothing comes even remotely close to the convenience, and the sheer number of charging stations - I can get wherever I need to go using a combination of the SC network, and the currently free NRMA rapid charger network - yes, even in a country as big as Australia (I live in the Central West of NSW)   NICK CHRISTEN Sadly, my answer is 0. there is nothing large enough for my family (we have 8 kids; there is no suburban or other large vehicle that is electric currently…at least not in the US)   DAVID JOHNSON I actually answered this in real life with my 3 year lease for the Toyota Prius Prime. Here in Central NY State we don't have lots of charging options.  A PHEV made perfect sense in terms of satisfying my daily driving needs (98% EV only miles so far) and an ability to take impromptu road trips without any planning or apprehension. I'm currently getting 4.9 mi/KWh which is nearly 20% better than a Tesla and don't really miss the longer range.  If my ~33 mi range could go to 50 or 70 mi, I don't think I'd ever need any more than that.   MICHAEL LULCHAK I would go for the Tesla Model Y Long Range.  The range of the Mach E is disappointing, and the price of the Mach E is close enough to the Tesla that we would be silly to purchase the Mach E.   .  The problems that Hyundai have had with batteries, and how they have (NOT) handled it suggests to me that their user experience has not changed for the better.  So the hyundai (and by association the Kia) are not options for us.  At all.   MARK RICHARDS I currently drive a Bolt, but I am looking to buy an Ioniq 5 AWD when available this fall. f I had to buy an EV today and drive it for 3 years, I'd probably go pick up a Bolt EUV.  Small, fast, and now has ACC, Lane Keep, and even super cruise.  Second choice would be the ID.4, BUT in the USA we only have the anemic 200HP 0-60 in 8.5 second version available today.   ATLE YRI The only car for three years. I would stick with the car I already have: VW ID.4 1st Max. Plenty of space for both luggage and people. Long range and charges quickly should there be a need for it. Very comfortable, lots of new technology and it gets better with each upgrade that comes OTA.   RON BARBER, SAN JOSE The current trophy holder of the Electric Cannon Ball Run. From Jan 1, 2021. Porsche Taycan 4S. Reasons: 1. Vehicle Dynamics, 2. Build Quality, 3. Charging Speed 260-270kW to 43%.   BRENDAN HUTCHINS I'd still wait for my Cybertruck reservation and try to get by without it until it's out. I'm so unbelievably excited for it.    If for some reason I couldn't wait, I'd buy the Ford Lightning, cause even though I hate the look of it, I do love the vehicle to grid ability and more.    MARK ORRICO I'm quite pleased with my Niro, and I am stuck with it for 3 years as it's a lease. Any car in my price range currently available I'd probably stick with the Niro truthfully. If I was going to get away from my price range definitely the Porsche Taycan, it like the turbo s but would accept any one of them.    QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   What's your ideal stop time on a long distance road trip? It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new PATREON PARTNER JULIETTE SODERGREN!   Weekend Long Reads   AN OBITUARY FOR THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE "Some 136 years ago, German engineer Carl Benz built the first motor car with an internal combustion engine. The ‘Benz Patent Motor Car’ – actually a trike, a three-wheeler – was powered by a single cylinder, four-stroke engine producing 0.74bhp." says Wired: "Ironically, the ICE may well go the same way as the horse; no longer an everyday means of transport, instead a plaything of the rich, paraded at special events and raced. In just a few decades, children will look at them, wonder at the smell of oils and fuels, and jump back when an open-piped V12 barks into life."   https://www.wired.co.uk/article/internal-combution-engine-obituary   ELECTROLYTE FORMULATIONS POINT TO NEXT-GEN BATTERIES "The stability and performance of lithium-oxygen batteries look set to be vastly improved with a tailored electrolyte that could herald the next generation of rechargeable batteries." says The Engineer: "The lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery (or lithium-air battery), consisting of Li-metal and a porous conductive framework as its electrodes, releases energy from the reaction of oxygen from the air and lithium. The burgeoning technology has the potential to provide much greater energy storage than a conventional lithium-ion battery."   https://www.theengineer.co.uk/electrolyte-lithium-air-batteries-liverpool-loughborough/   WHY NIO AND XPENG ARE MAKING A BEELINE FOR NORWAY "Norway is fast becoming Chinese electric car start-ups’ key export market. There’s a reason for that: it’s the world leader in terms of EV uptake" says the South China MOrning Post: "Penetration of EVs in Norway is the highest worldwide, with pure electric cars making up over 54 per cent of overall new car sales. In Norway, no purchase and import taxes are imposed on EVs.  Buyers are also exempt from paying a 25 per cent value-added tax.  NIO hopes its “battery as a service” (BaaS) model, which allows customers to buy an electric car while subscribing to a separate battery-leasing plan for a fee, will help it gain an advantage in Europe."   https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3132514/why-chinese-electric-car-start-ups-nio-xpeng-are-making-beeline   GM CEO MARY BARRA TALKS CHEVY SILVERADO "There are still few details about the upcoming electric pickup truck, and we're not even sure if it will carry the Silverado name. We do know it will be built on GM's Ultium platform, and it may share some features and design with the GMC Hummer EV electric truck." repotrs InsideEVs: " Barra said there's already strong demand for the Silverado EV. More specifically, she referred to the "strong response from commercial and government owners as a lot of fleet customers are looking to have zero emission vehicles." Barra made it clear that GM is highly skilled at producing full-size trucks, so now it just has to fit those trucks with an EV powertrain."   https://insideevs.com/news/505995/mary-barra-talks-silverado-ev/     PLUG-IN MODELS NEARING 1 OF 10 NEW-VEHICLE SALES IN CALIFORNIA "Plug-in vehicles—including battery-electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen fuel-cell cars—are nearing one in 10 new-car sales in California, according to a periodic update from industry group Veloz, referring to the latest data from the state." writes Green Car Reports: "Californians purchased 59,000 plug-in cars in the first quarter of 2021, accounting for more than a 9% market share for the quarter. The Tesla Model Y was the top-selling model in the state, at 15,265, with the Tesla Model 3 second, at 14,536. The Chevrolet Bolt EV was a distant third, at 5,252 units. The highest-ranked plug-in hybrid as the Toyota Prius Prime, in fourth place, at 4,081"   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132176_plug-in-models-nearing-1-of-10-new-vehicle-sales-in-california   TESLA SUPERCHARGER NETWORK REACHES 25,000-CHARGER MILESTONE "Tesla’s Supercharger network has now reached a total of 25,000 chargers – a big milestone for the fast-charging network. The Supercharger network is really the only global network of fast-charging stations." says electrek: "At the end of 2020, Tesla had over 20,000 charging stalls at over 2,100 Supercharging stations around the world. Now just a few months later, Tesla announced that the automaker has now 25,000 Superchargers around the world. Those 25,000 Supercharger stalls are at just over 2,700 Supercharger stations. Tesla launched a new Twitter account called ‘Tesla Charging’ that shares every new charging station coming online"   ELECTRIC CAR INSURANCE IN UK IS CHEAPER "The average cost of insuring an electric car in the UK is £45 less than the cost of covering a petrol or diesel car, according to research from the website Comparethemarket.com. Analysis of annual premiums in the first three months of the year showed electric car drivers were charged an average of £566, while petrol and diesel drivers paid £611." according to The Guardian: "Dan Hutson, the head of motor insurance, at Comparethemarket.com, said the difference was explained by a range of factors, including electric cars having fewer complex moving parts to be damaged in an accident."   https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/may/08/electric-car-insurance-in-uk-is-45-less-than-for-petrol-or-diesel-vehicle   CHINA'S EMISSIONS SURPASS ALL DEVELOPED NATIONS COMBINED " The distribution of global greenhouse gas emissions has reached an inflection point: China's emissions exceeded developed nations combined in 2019, a new Rhodium Group analysis concludes." says AXIOS: "Rhodium's Larsen notes China's per-capita rise stems from higher living standards, China's relatively fossil-intensive power mix and its export-focused manufacturing."   https://www.axios.com/china-emissions-ranking-0757dc71-ffdd-4236-af40-1da21e669061.html   THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE FREEDOM ACT COULD PUT BILLIONS INTO A NATIONWIDE EV CHARGING NETWORK "The Biden administration has made no secret that it is interested in pushing US transportation to an electric future, promising to spend vast sums of money on bringing electric vehicles into the US Government fleet as well as increasing the national EV charging infrastructure. It's a big deal." says CNET: " two members of Congress are pushing a new piece of legislation called the Electric Vehicle Freedom Act, and it goes even farther than President Biden's promises, according to a report published Wednesday by Automotive News. The Electric Vehicle Freedom Act seeks to build hundreds of thousands of electric-vehicle-charging stations around the US within five years and also seeks to shift government funding and tax breaks away from internal combustion vehicles and toward EVs"   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/best-leather-conditioner-for-cars/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   MARK I have a small business and was using Google and Facebook ads to find customers. In January, I found Russian ads on my both my Facebook and Google ad accounts and they were charging my payment methods. Then they used my PayPal, credit card and two Visa bank debit cards to order stuff at best buy, eBay and on my Google Store. All of these accounts had different passwords and two factor authentication. So how much data will I be sharing? None.   ROBERT GRACE As to privacy and what driving info that I transmit back to the car manufacturer, the issue is quite important to me. Attached is an image of a Ford Mach-E's very granular privacy options, which I think quite good.  As you can see, you can completely disconnect if you want to, so that the only driving info collected is that required by NHTSA for crash recall.   KERNEL Giving up my data. Two thoughts: 1) I would want open-source evidence what data is collected and where it is stored. 2) I would want control to switch data sharing (and any associated benefits) on and off when I want   ANDY Compared to all the data my cell phone gathers, I don’t worry about my car knowing how I’m driving. My issue would come with any internal cameras and if those were recorded.   CARLING FROM CALIFORNIA I use Apple products because they have the power and size to stand up to attempts to access phones or cloud data, from law enforcement trying to strongarm into complying just because they want some data. But I don’t think a smaller car company would stand so firm, and I’m worried about how data could be misused if there was a record of where my car was.   TONY FROM BRISBANE I share my location from my phone to the rest of my family so they know where I am. I have no issue with my car being tracked as long as I own that data.   SUSAN CHAMPION As someone who drives a lot for a living I feel reassured that, should anything happen, there would be a record of where I am and what was happening around the car.   ROADIEDAVE Despite all the misbehaviour around diesel emission, I actually trust the established car companies to follow all the correct protocols and keep my user data private. We have seen so many times the Silicon Valley startups take the attitude of moving fast and breaking things, but going the extra mile for security can be forgotten in favour of rapid growth.   ELECTRIC LIMITS The question is where the car is made. Anything coming from China, regardless of where it’s sold, should be assumed will be programmed to send a certain amount of data back to Chinese powers. To assume anything is naïve and we’ve seen with mobile products over the years, software which sends info back to China when it goes online.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power.  I have never heard anything like a 20% rate of EV drivers being unhappy with electric. Yes, No and tell me why!     Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com     It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER) JULIETTE SODERGREN (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN VAN DEVOORT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. The 2012 model, in particular, proved to be a disaster in body finish, brakes, suspension, and power equipment Please consider reading up on the reliability of this car before purchasing it as a used car, suggests Consumer Reports. https://www.consumerreports.org/used-cars/used-cars-to-avoid-buying/ https://www.carcomplaints.com/ is another resource for unreliable car lists. Show #803   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 8th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Welcome to a new PRODUCER via Patreon BARRY WOLF   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon DAVID MOORE   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA MODEL Y CUSTOMERS IN CANADA PREPARE FOR DELIVERY “Model Y reservation holders are seeing new fields to be filled in within their accounts online at Tesla.com. Tesla is asking for registrant type (one or two people or a company), registration address, trade-in details and also payment method for Model Y. Existing Tesla customers are most likely familiar with these steps, but for new customers, the process inches the process closer ahead of deliveries slated in June. For payment method, Tesla offers options for cash, a loan arranged through the company or a self-arranged loan. The placeholder annual percentage rate (APR) is noted as 4.6%, although after submitting a credit application with Tesla, this rate may change.” Says iPhone for Canada: “Last week, the Tesla retail location in West Vancouver confirmed the first Model Y deliveries in Canada would take place in June. Model Y currently starts at $75,990 in Canada for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive version, with the Standard range (rear-wheel drive) set to begin in “early 2021”, according to Tesla’s website.”   Via Reddit: "Yay! Got the email I was waiting for today! Asked to upload driver's license, select trade-in and payment options! Model Y Performance / Performance Upgrade We're getting closer, fellow Canucks! "   MODEL Y PRODUCTION CHANGED TO BEGIN 2022 FOR EUROPE "Last week when I checked, the Tesla Model Y production was set for begin 2021. Today I checked and it changed to begin 2022. I don't know if this is only for Belgium, but almost 2 years is very long imo."   "Still says early 2021 when I try to configure for Switzerland."   https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/gyjfdn/model_y_production_changed_to_begin_2022_for/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf   CANADA: PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES INCREASED BY 50% IN Q1 2020 "Plug-in electric car sales substantially improved in Canada during the first three months of 2020, according to the report provided by Electric Mobility Canada.  The total volume of all-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hydrogen fuel cell (FCVs) cars - although probably not many FCVs - amounted to 11,978, which is about 50% more than in Q1 2019 (7,999)."  says InsideEVs: "It will be hard to improve from that point in Q2, as we know how devastating the COVID-19 lockdown was for the automotive market, but at least the plug-in market share will be high. Already, March brought a noticeable spike of 5.6% - the new all-time record. In terms of the most popular models - the Tesla Model 3 is second to none with 4,025 sales in Q1, more than three times above the 2nd best (Toyota Prius Prime). Top BEVs: Tesla Model 3: 4,025. Chevrolet Bolt EV: 1,031. Nissan LEAF: 701"   https://insideevs.com/news/427255/canada-plugin-car-sales-q1-2020/   AUDI'S PLUG-IN HYBRID A6 GOES ON SALE COSTING JUST UNDER £53,000 "The order books have now opened for Audi’s new plug-in hybrid A6 executive saloon, which costs £52,790 in its cheapest guise. Dubbed the 50 TFSI e, the newcomer will offer an all-electric range of 34 miles per charge, while Audi hopes company car drivers will be enticed by the 10-percent Benefit-in-Kind tax rate." according to Motor1.com: "Initially available solely as a saloon, with an ‘Avant’ estate to follow later, the car comes with a 2-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to create a four-wheel-drive, four-door luxury car with 295 bhp. That means it can manage the sprint from nought to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds. Owners will also be able to take advantage of Audi’s e-tron charging service, which grants access to 18 charging networks across the UK and amalgamates all costs incurred in one monthly invoice."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/427030/audi-a6-phev-saloon-pricing/   ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE CARS: WILL AN EV EVER REALLY DELIVER? "Can a real evo car really ever be powered by electricity? It's an argument that's been ranging between enthusiasts from all parts of the automotive world, but whichever side of the argument you find yourself on, the industry has had no choice but to cautiously go ahead develop them anyway." writes evo.co.uk: "The way a Tesla launches from a standstill will churn your stomach, but its real party trick is the way it responds with perfect linearity and imperceptible delay to movements of your right foot. To assume it’s all about straight lines is to do such response a disservice too – think instead of the accuracy to which you could adjust a car’s line mid-corner or over-rotate its rear tyres on the way out. Electrification means the end of being in the wrong gear for a corner (or worse, the car selecting one of umpteen wrong gears itself), and of wobbly torque curves. That’s without the potential offered by torque-vectoring set-ups too, something electric motors can do with greater fidelity and intensity than any conglomeration of differentials and clutch packs. Had technology stopped at some arbitrary point in the past we’d have been denied some amazing cars. We’d be denied some amazing EVs if we collectively decided now that internal combustion was all that mattered for the thrill of driving."   https://www.evo.co.uk/features/202705/electric-performance-cars-the-pros-and-cons   ABB PARTNERS WITH VIGOR SELECTS ABB AS PROPULSION AND ENERGY STORAGE PARTNER FOR HYBRID-ELECTRIC FERRIES "American shipbuilding company Vigor Fab LLC has selected ABB as the hybrid-electric propulsion and energy storage system provider for the newest additions to the Washington State Ferry fleet—the largest US ferry system." according to Green Car Congress: "The new Olympic Class ferries, which will have the capacity to carry 144 cars and 1,500 passengers each, mark a new era for the Washington State transport operator in the shift toward technologies that enable significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel use. The new vessels will be able to fully operate on battery power and will have the capability to revert to hybrid mode, if required. The battery power can also extend zero-emissions capability along the supply chain by using renewables and hydroelectric power. Figures from trade association Interferry indicate that ferries transport 2.1 billion passengers and 250 million vehicles worldwide every year. As numbers increase, the sector is under pressure to meet International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets to reduce annual emissions by 30% by 2025."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/06/20200607-abb.html   THIS EV BARGE CONCEPT TAKES BATTERY-SWAPPING TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL "A group of companies, including Wärtsilä, ING Bank, Engie, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, launched a new consortium - the Zero Emission Services B.V. (ZES), with the goal to develop zero-emission inland waterway shipping in the Netherlands. The idea is to develop a fully electric barge with replaceable battery containers "ZESPacks", which would be able to go 50-100 km (31-62 miles) and then swap the pack... containers for a fully charged." says InsideEVs: "A single ZESPack would have a capacity of about 2 MWh, while the power needed by the arge is usually 500-1,000 kW. It means 2-4 hours of work between swaps. The cool thing about the concept is that it allows keeping the costs of barges under control (compared to a long-range version), allows use of renewable electricity and utilizes the ZESPack as energy storage for grid purposes when not in use for a while."   https://insideevs.com/news/427049/ev-barge-concept-battery-swapping-zes/   ENEL X EXPANDED ITS EV CHARGING NETWORK TO OVER 30,000 PUBLIC CHARGING POINTS Enel X expanded its EV charging network to more than 30,000 public charging points, roughly a threefold increase from about 10,500 already available, by kicking off eRoaming connectivity with Dutch EV network operator Allego as well as Robert Bosch GmbH and German company Innogy. Under the framework of the Hubject e-mobility platform, this collaboration now allows Enel X JuicePass app users to fill up their EVs, without signing new contracts, in the charging points operated by Allego, Bosch and Innogy, on a network of more than 19,500 points in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.   Allego’s EU network has over 15,000 public charging points available via Hubject, over 1,000 of which are Fast (50 to 175 kW) and 200 are Ultra-Fast (175 to 350 kW), all installed in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the UK. Similarly, the Innogy network has around 5,000 public charging points, 4,000 of them available via the Hubject network, of which 300 are Fast (50 to 175 kW). Bosch operates a network of around 550 charging points, also available via Hubject. The networks operated by both Bosch and Innogy are installed throughout Germany.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 227 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #647   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   AUDI REVEALS ITS SECOND ELECTRIC CAR, THE E-TRON SPORTBACK  The Verge reports: "Audi just pulled the wraps off of the E-Tron Sportback, the company’s second electric car, at the 2019 LA Auto Show. Coming to Europe in the first half of 2020, the top-tier version of the new premium EV will offer up to 446 kilometers of range (277 miles) and is powered by dual electric motors with a total power output of 265kW, or around 350 horsepower. A slightly less powerful version of the Sportback with a smaller battery will start at €71,350 (around $79,000)."   https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/19/20973020/audi-e-tron-sportback-sedan-la-auto-show-2019   According to TechCrunch: "Audi has delivered 18,500 of its all-electric e-tron SUVs globally since March 2019 when the vehicle first came to market. Audi plans to offer two variants of the vehicle, a Sportback 50 and Sportback 55. The Sportback will come to Europe first in spring 2020. The Sportback 55 will come to the U.S. in fall 2020. The 2020 Audi e-tron Sportback has a 86.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack that has a range of up to 446 kilometers (277.1 miles) in the EU’s WLTP cycle. The EPA estimates aren’t out yet, but expect the range numbers to be slightly lower. The company is targeting an EPA range of about 220 miles over the 204 miles of range that the regular e-tron gets."   https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/19/audis-next-all-electric-vehicle-the-e-tron-sportback-is-a-coupe-suv/   2019 AUDI E-TRON RECEIVES A 5-STAR US NCAP RATING The 2019 Audi e-tron, the first fully-electric Audi model, has earned the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program’s maximum overall safety rating of five stars in its latest series of tests. Additionally, standard automatic emergency braking is offered as part of Audi pre sense® front. Using a front-mounted camera, the e-tron can help initiate braking at speeds of up to 52 mph for detected pedestrians and bicyclists in front of the vehicle and can bring a vehicle to a full stop when traveling at speeds under 35 mph based on IIHS tests.   GOOGLE MAPS 10.30 PREPARES TO LET YOU PAY FOR EV CHARGING AND FIND COMPATIBLE PLUGS "Google Maps 10.30 for Android has added strings that suggest it will support making payments straight from the app." says XDA Developers: "These features are not yet live in the Google Maps app for Android. We’ll probably see an announcement from Google in a few days or weeks, though. The last time Google Maps was updated with a new EV-related feature was back in April when they added real-time availability of charging ports. With new electric vehicles on the way, the Maps app is long overdue for new functionality."   https://www.xda-developers.com/google-maps-10-30-electric-vehicle-charging-payments-compatible-plugs/   2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME HAS 302 HP "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid was introduced here at the L.A. Auto Show, and although it doesn't have much in the way of visual differentiation, its spec sheets pops with eye-opening stat after another." reports AutoBlog; "It produces a total system output of 302 horsepower, making it the most powerful compact SUV from a non-luxury brand. Toyota says it'll also go from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. As for eco credentials, the RAV4 Prime can go an estimated 39 miles on its battery alone, which is better than any current plug-in hybrid SUV and behind only the Polestar 1, Chevrolet Volt (soon-to-be-discontinued) and Honda Clarity. Even the Toyota Prius Prime manages only 25 miles."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/20/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-revealed   TESLA ‘HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ‘SUPERCHARGER FIRE,’ SAYS LOCAL FIRE OFFICIAL "A fire was reported to have been caused by a Tesla Supercharger at a Wawa store in New Jersey last weekend, but a local fire official now says Tesla had nothing to do with the cause of the fire." says electrek: "The next day, a Wawa spokesperson told CNBC that the issue was with the Supercharger station. But now we learn that Tesla had actually nothing to do with the fire. Matthew Palmeiri, who works for Parsippany-Troy Hills Fire Department District 5, told Automotive News that Jersey Central Power & Light had a problem with a transformer next to the Tesla Supercharger"   https://electrek.co/2019/11/19/tesla-had-nothing-to-do-with-supercharger-fire-says-local-fire-official/   KARMA REVERO GTS DEBUTS WITH MORE RANGE " the GTS knocks over a half-second off the sprint to 60 mph. The Revero GTS requires just 3.9 seconds for the trip, and with the accelerator firmly pinned it will keep pulling to an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph." writes Motor1.com: " The Revero GTS can travel 380 miles when using its range-extending BMW-sourced three-cylinder engine to generate electricity. Fully charged, its upgraded battery pack can power the Revero 80 miles without the engine kicking in. Throughout all this, total output is actually the same 536 horsepower that you’ll find on the Revero GT, which makes the performance enhancements on the GTS even more impressive."   https://www.motor1.com/news/383268/karma-revero-gts-debuts/   PORSCHE TAYCAN CARB CERTIFICATION REVEALS UP TO 282 MILES OF RANGE And staying with Motor1: "An eagle-eyed TaycanEVForum.com member posted a copy of the Porsche Taycan’s CARB (California AirResource Board) certificate that hints at the EV sedan’s real-world electric range. The document reveals the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S returning 281.8 and 282.7 miles, respectively. However, this isn’t the first time CARB’s number exceeded estimates. The board certified the Jaguar I-Pace with 334 miles of range, which far exceeds the 234-mile range given by the U.S. EPA. There’s a significant chance that when the EPA tests the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S, its numbers could be closer to our estimates or even lower, possibly hovering around 200 miles."   https://www.motor1.com/news/383241/porsche-taycan-range-estimate-carb/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?”   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.

Sunday 1st April 2018. RIMAC C_TWO SELLS OUT Well we first saw the second attempt Rimac have made at building an electric hypercar at the Geneva Motor Show, and now they’ve just about sold out, according to Autocar. The specs are eye-watering, probably literally, can you imagine how it would feel to floor it and get 0-60 in 1.85 seconds. And it goes to show the crazy advances in electric cars, that people are now getting more interested in the 0-100mph time rather than just 60. Who even wants to get to just 60! That all important 0-100 time is 4.3 seconds. Those figures undercut the new Tesla Roadster however the price certainly doesn’t And what if you keep your foot in? It will get you to 258mph! RImac already have the production facilities so the good news is it will start to be made soon, definitely in 2018, with delivery by 2020. And unlike the first Rimac, of which 10 were made including the one Richard Hammond used to celebrate bonfire night early, this time they’re making 150. And if you join the dots then yes, that means there are 150 people in the world who see the car revealed and say “sure, here’s my $2.1 million”! As for tech, and speed, you get 8 cameras, lidar, 6 radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors and GPS. And you know we told you yesterday about the new Lincoln Aviator which unlocks and starts with your phone? Well that’s SO yesterday. Literally! The Rimac C_Two using facial recognition to unlock and start the car. So good luck stealing one. And if you can’t be bothered to drive one the best cars ever made, your $2.1m buys you Level 4 autonomous driving. Level 4 vehicles are "designed to perform all safety-critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip." However, it's important to note that this is limited to the "operational design domain (ODD)" of the vehicle—meaning it does not cover every driving scenario. There is an electric motor at each wheel and some very clever technology to manage the power output of each for all-wheel drive safety. And the part which I still think is witchcraft – the front axle works on a single gear, but the rear motors have a two speed carbon-clutch gearbox.   ELECTRIC CAR PARADE FOR NEW YORK Now that those pesky journalists are out of the way, the New York Auto Show can open for real, and comedian Tracy Morgan and Nelson Piquet Jr will led a parade to officially open the show, in electric vehicles. A fully electric Formula E car led the fleet of EVs along 11th to the convention centre on New York’s West Side. It’s the first time an official Formula E car has driven on Manhatten’s roads. The parade also featured the Jaguar I-PACE plus a range of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles including: Toyota Prius Prime, Chrysler Pacifica PEH, Nissan Leaf, Honda Clarity Plug-in, Volvo XC60 PHEV, MINI Countryman PHEV, Chevy Bolt EV, Kia Soul EV, and others.   TESLA BACK IN GERMANY In a week when Tesla couldn’t seemed to catch a break, from the stock price to recalling 123,000 Model S’s, some good news came through from Germany. Last year the country removed Tesla cars from the official list of models eligible for purchase incentives. This was because of an article which accused Tesla of not actually selling the base model car below the 60,000Euro price limit. Tesla successfully argued that they have in fact delivered plenty of base cars below that price, the whole situation if strange that they were banned for selling them with inventives for three months. So it makes you wonder, in the land of the diesel car which is behind Tesla making EVs, why a German article would print that when it’s not true, AND why the authorities would believe it. Obviously hard to know why, the land of the diesel car which is behind Tesla making EVs, it ever happened in the first place. Did I mentioned that already? Maybe it’s because the incentive scheme is partly funded by the German car industry. Ahhh. OK.   MODEL X AUTOPILOT CRASH However onto the sad subject of the Model X crash in California in which the driver was killed. We learned earlier this week that the metal crash barrier which is meant to be there before the concrete, and absorb any impact, was a lot shorter than it had been in earlier pictures. And according to the Telegraph: “Tesla said on Friday that a Tesla Model X involved a fatal crash in California last week had activated its Autopilot system, raising new questions about the semi-autonomous system that handles some driving tasks. The electric-car company also said vehicle logs from the accident showed no action had been taken by the driver soon before the crash and that he had received earlier warnings to put his hands on the wheel. The driver had about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view of the concrete divider with the crushed crash attenuator, but the vehicle logs show that no action was taken," Tesla said. The statement did not say why the Autopilot system apparently did not detect the concrete   TESLA MAPS BEING ROLLED OUT And according to Electrek, the new Tesla navigation update is being slowly released around the world. The highlights I’ve picked out from their story: it now uses it’s own maps using open source data from MapBox and Valhalla; look out for software update 2018.12 for the beta of Tesla Maps; faster routing and more accurate estimated arrival times are promised. Musk said that with the old system, they were “stuck with legacy 3rd party black box code and stale data”. Now with the new system based on open source modules, they will be able to improve on it over time.   SOLID STATE IN NO STATE SAY NISSAN Magical batteries always seem to be on the horizon, despite incredible cars like Teslas running perfectly fine on established tech like 18650 cells, but despite that some people always think we’re one battery breakthrough away from what’s really needed to get EVs to catch on. But one of those isn’t Nissan, who are downplaying the potential of solid state batteries. Takao Asami, Nissan's senior vice president for research and advanced engineering, said he doesn't expect solid-state technology to be ready for serious deployment before the middle of the next decade. Among the obstacles are cost and manufacturing acumen, he said. "All solid-state batteries, roughly speaking, are still in the initial phase of research. So according to my feeling, it's practically a zero at this stage," Asami said at Nissan's world headquarters here south of Tokyo. Solid-state batteries would replace the liquid electrolyte used in lithium ion batteries with a solid substance that allows for improved energy density, weight, safety and charging time. "It's working in the lab," Asami conceded. "But if we make it bigger and put it in a vehicle, drive for several kilometers and ensure safety and cost performance, compared to a lithium ion battery, we don't have a comparable scenario yet. "We still need several breakthroughs." However Toyota think they’ll be ready in the early 2020s. Speaking on the subject in October, Toyota Executive Vice President Didier Leroy said, "We believe our solid-state battery technology can be a game changer with the potential to dramatically improve driving range."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.   Sunday 4th March 2018. FEBRUARY EV SALES For February sales there are a couple of models people will look at first. The Model 3 should be on a steep production curve heading upwards, and the new Nissan LEAF should start to see sales picking up as deliveries happen. According to InsideEVs the Kia Niro PHEV and Hyundai IONIQ report their first full month of sales, as we’re still waiting on those. Starting with the newest entrant and the LEAF sold 895 cars in February, and that’s with a constrained supply with most of those already spoken for. More cars should be arriving at dealers soon, although it’s currently 6th in the charts for February. March should see a sharp increase, but it has been noted that even those who wanted to get one early doors couldn’t get anything earlier than late Feb, early March delivery. The Chevvy Bolt is up almost 50% from this time last year, last month at 1,477, although it wasn’t on sale nationwide until half way through the year. The popular Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which does very well in the UK, struggles to get over 300. The Toyota Prius Prime, or the Prius Plug-In as it’s called here in the UK, sold over 2,000 in North America, also up 50% on this time in 2017. As always with Tesla they don’t provide monthly numbers so it’s a best guess. So the Top 10 in order: Tesla Model 3, Toyota Prius Prime, Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model S, Chevrolet Volt, Nissan LEAF, Honda Clarity PHEV, Tesla Model X, Ford Fusion Energi and BMW i3 including the REX. Of those the Honda and Ford aren’t available here in Europe. But yesterday we told you about how well the e-GOLF is selling and yet it can’t get over 200 a month in the USA.   DYSON DOUBLES UP Readers of Autocar may have picked up on the latest news from Dyson, makers of fine vacuum cleaners and hand dryers, who are making the pivot into electric cars. It seems the reveal of their first EV is still set for 2019, and now they’re increasing their workforce with 300 new hires in their EV department. So far Dyson has announced £2billion ($2.7billion) investment in their electric car project. They are due to move into a 750 acre facility with their 700 employees working on their huge EV investments, which include big bets on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Solid State batteries, following their Sakti3 investment in 2015. James Dyson is not a fan of diesel and how governments have incentivised buying them. He says: “Governments around the world have encouraged the adoption of oxymoronically designated ‘clean diesel’ engines through subsidies and grants. Major auto manufacturers have circumvented and duped clean air regulations. As a result, developed and developing cities are full of smog-belching cars, lorries and buses. It is a problem that others are ignoring,” https://paultan.org/2018/03/02/dyson-ev-crew-to-gain-300-develop-ai-tech-report/   DAYS AWAY FROM GENEVA VW is set to show off it’s 4th EV at the 88th Geneva Motor show. They will be taking the new Vizzion EV to Switzerland as an addition to the I.D., I.D. Crozz and I.D. Buzz. This is the model which will be up against the premium luxury cars like the Model S, but not until 2022. Looking forward 4 years, Volkswagen are confident of having Level 5 autonomous driving in place. Also at Geneva will be one of the recent hits, that’s the Hyundai Kona. We only heard the specs a few days ago but forums and EV blogs seemed delighted with the first of a new breed of electric cars and PHEV hybrids coming from Hyundai / Kia. The WLTP range of almost 300 miles should be good for 250 miles in real world driving which is enough for week long commuting, taking the kids to football practice and a day trip on Sunday. You might only plug it in once a week. https://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/sunday-7--most-anticipated-cars-of-the-geneva-motor-show-117443.html?trackLink=homePageNews1   SEAT GO RACING WITH CUPRA Well talking of Geneva SEAT will launch the Cupra e-racer as what they call the worlds first 100 percent electric racing touring car. Based on the SEAT Leon platform it will then be supersized with new bumpers, bonnet, grill and a suitably extravagant rear wing, adding plenty of carbon fibre along the way. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/03/cupra-e-racer-worlds-first-ev-touring-car/   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Sami, on the other hand, spends a week driving not one, but four compact SUVs: the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Honda CR-V, the Nissan Rogue, and the Chevrolet Equinox, to see which one comes out on top. Wrapping things up, the pair discuss the Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid, and specifically, how to devise a system that lets everyone around you know just how efficient you're driving. Spoiler alert: it involves the birth of a brand-new lifeform.

The 2000 Toyota Prius was the first nationally available hybrid vehicle in the United States. A few months earlier, Honda introduced the Insight, the so-called "Peanut Car." But it's never made much of an impact in its original edition or the current generation that debuted in recent years. Double click below to listen to the latest edition: But in the nearly 18 years since alternative fuel vehicles — gas/electric, electric only, natural gas, etc. — have been manufactured, has the technology made a difference? Environmental and green car advocates are likely to say "yes." And every major manufacturer has at least one alternative fuel vehicle in its lineup. The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime Hybrid: Dominated by a sharp-angled exterior design. It averaged 58.2 mpg during a 10-day, 1,600-mile test drive. Image © James Raia/2017 BMW to Mitsubishi and Ford to Lexus, manufacturers promote hybrid and other alternative fuel vehicles with enthusiastic marketing plans. Even Cadillac had a hybrid Escalade trim for a few years.  It's the massive SUV the size of a small apartment and its hybrid edition had EPA mileage estimates of 20 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway. Few were sold and production stopped in 2013. But there are interesting and impressive hybrids on the marketplace, although neither has changed the automotive landscape to any significant degree. A few months ago, The Weekly Driver reviewed the 2017 Lincoln MKZ. It's the first sedan I've driven with the same price for the gas and hybrid models, about $36,000. The vehicles' hybrid model has an EPA estimate of 41 mpg in city driving and 38 on the highway. It will be on my top-10 cars of the year list in December. Last May, I drove the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime round-trip during the Tour of California bike race. I covered 1,600 miles in 10 days and averaged 58.2 mpg. It's a hybrid I'd recommend without reservation. Tesla, the high-performance all-electric car, has attracted a lot of attention. But until its affordable model is readily available, Telsa is still a novelty car for elitists. And then there's the new Chevy Bolt, the spacious sedan with a 238-mile range. Will it make a difference in consumers' buying habits? So far, the general public hasn't adapted to "green car" technology, with only about 3 percent of new cars sold annually classified as alternative fuel vehicles. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich (www.tahoetruckeoutdoor.com) and James Raia (www.theweeklydriver.com) discuss alternative fuel vehicles on this episode of The Weeekly Driver Podcast. We welcome your comments.
