Do you need ChatGPT integrated into your new bike? How about an all-wheel drive bike? (OK: a 2-wheel drive ... but yeah, that's all-wheel drive!) In this episode of TechFirst, host John Koetsier chats the CEO of Urtopia about their new AI-integrated 'smart bike with a mind'. The e-bike market is predicted to grow to about $26 billion by 2028, but Dr. Owen Chang explains how Urtopia is taking a different approach by developing most parts in-house to create a fully integrated, software-enabled product. He says their AI features, like ChatGPT integration, makes e-bikes safer and more personalised. It can also provide assistance including directions, making the ride safer and more enjoyable. Utopia is further developing its own version of GPT based on GPT-5, refining its potential functionalities. We also chat about the world's first e-bike that has drive motors on both wheels, providing more power and better traction. 00:00 Introduction and Welcome 01:06 Exploring the Fusion GT Bike 01:47 The Design and Development Process 03:53 The Power of Dual Motor and Dual Battery System 06:51 The Future of Bikes: ChatGPT Integration? 07:12 The Role of AI in Utopia's Bikes 07:38 The Vision of Utopia: A Bicycle with a Mind 16:48 The Future of Smart Devices and E-bikes 25:30 Conclusion: The Bike as a Wearable Device

Auto - Rund ums Auto.

Show #1455 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Wednesday 4th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW'S 2022 SUPPLY OF EVS IS ‘BASICALLY SOLD OUT' IN THE US AND EUROPE - Volkswagen's CEO, Herbert Diess, says that the company is “basically sold out on electric vehicles in Europe and in the United States” for the year, according to a report from the Financial Times. This means that anyone hoping to get an EV from VW, Audi, or any of the group's other brands may have to wait until 2023, as the company tries to navigate the chip shortage and production issues from COVID shutdowns in China. - According to the report, VW expects its backlog of orders to keep growing. It currently has plenty of people on the list waiting to get an EV and expects to add more throughout the year. - According to the Financial Times, VW sold just under 100,000 electric cars in Q1 2022. Tesla, according to its latest earnings, sold around 310,000 in the same time period. - When Diess spoke to The Verge earlier this year, he said that the company is trying to grow its presence in America. In his Decoder interview, he said that he expected the company's growth in the States to “mostly come from EVs,” though he did admit the company would likely see supply constraints throughout 2022. Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/4/23057268/volkswagen-vw-electric-cars-sold-out-supply-chain VOLKSWAGEN SOLD ~99K EVS OUT OF 1.9M IN Q1 - Volkswagen recently released its January-March 2022 interim report, reporting 1.9 million vehicle sales and deliveries in the first quarter. VW's all-electric vehicle sales and deliveries made up 5.2% of total deliveries, amounting to 99,064 EVs. - Volkswagen is specifically interested in growing in the United States with plans to build a dedicated battery cell production factory in the country. The German automaker announced a $1.7 billion commitment to boosting its BEV product lineup, R&D, and manufacturing in North America. - The legacy automaker aims to achieve 10% market share in North America by 2030 as it bolsters expansion in global growth markets. Battery-electric vehicles are central to its goals. VW plans to have more than 25 electric vehicles in its BEV portfolio by the end of the decade. Since its unveiling, it has gained momentum with global automakers and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide for its robust capabilities. It's also being adopted by BMW. - In March, Volkswagen announced the addition of anonymous "swarm data" from other Volkswagen vehicles to help its advanced driver assist systems make better decisions over time, such as performing automatic lane changes. The addition of swarm data marks the next step towards vehicle systems that support fully-automated driving, according to Volkswagen. - Among its features, it can automatically keep the vehicle in the center of the lane, but can also adapt to an individual's driving style, including driving further to the left or right of the lane instead of exactly in the middle. Retail sales were down 12.3%, for the month. Trucks sales were down 17.8% to 79,768. SUVs were up 2.7% to 92,809. Sales of Ford electric vehicles increased 139 percent over last year on the strength of Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit sales. Original Source : https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/ford-motor-april-u.s.-vehicle-sales-down-10.5-electric-vehicle-sales-up-139 MUSTANG MACH-E GETS BOOST - Ford's Mustang Mach-E receives a boost in braked towing capacity to 1,000 kg for extended range models in both rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive - The Mustang Mach-E also received updates to reduce the charging time between 80-90 per cent capacity from 52 minutes to 15 minutes, a recalibration of the one-pedal driving feature for even smoother performance at lower speeds and enhancements to driver comfort. - Now on sale in Europe for over one year, the Mustang Mach-E continues to win fans. Around 88 per cent of customers to-date have moved from other car brands to Ford to experience the fun-to-drive characteristics, bold styling and driving range of the vehicle. Existing owners can also benefit from many of the recent upgrades through software or homologation updates, with future over-the-air updates planned to keep the Mustang Mach-E continuously improving. As far as the numbers go, there's an increase – though it's important to note that the company has also given the fastback EV substantial updates, including an increase in vehicle range. - The 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor now starts at $48,400 – a $1,200 increase from before. The Dual Motor variant now starts at $51,900. Both prices are before the applicable $1,400 destination charge and Federal Tax Credit valued at $7,500. - Polestar 2 Dual Motor gets a bump, with a preliminary estimated 260-mile US EPA range. This increase is thanks to software improvements, implementing an 11-mile increase from the 2022 model year. The 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor model is still rated at 270 miles by EPA. - The US-spec Polestar 2 will have an upgraded heat pump designed for better cold-weather performance, new design options across the interior and exterior of the car, and a more advanced air quality sensor. - There's a new performance software upgrade for the Performance Pack for the 2023 model year. The upgrade adds 68 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque to the car. The Performance Pack is only available for the dual-motor variant, but will also be available to purchase as a separate software upgrade for both existing and future dual-motor cars, with and without the Performance Pack. RIVIAN BACKTRACKS ON PRICE INCREASES FOR EXISTING RESERVATIONS - The strong reactions from Rivian reservation holders, especially early supporters, to the price hikes recently announced by the EV startup may be the reason why the company has just announced it has backtracked on price adjustments for existing reservations. - Rivian reassures customers that existing reservations made prior to the March 1 announcement will be honored at the original price. Furthermore, those who canceled their preorders on or after March 1 have the option to restore their original configuration. - "For anyone with a Rivian preorder as of the March 1 pricing announcement, your original configured price will be honored. If you canceled your preorder on or after March 1 and would like to reinstate it, we will restore your original configuration, pricing and delivery timing. Our team will be sending an email in the next few days with more details." - "As we worked to update pricing to reflect these cost increases, we wrongly decided to make these changes apply to all future deliveries, including pre-existing configured preorders. We failed to appreciate how you viewed your configuration as price locked, and we wrongly assumed the announced Dual-Motor and Standard battery pack would provide configurations that would deliver price points similar to your original configuration. While this was the logic, it was wrong and we broke your trust in Rivian." Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571222/rivian-backtracks-price-increases-existing-reservations/ RIVIAN BUYERS ARE CANCELING AT ALARMING RATES AFTER PRICE INCREASES - A poll shows that Rivian buyers are canceling their reservations at an alarming rate after significant price increases for the R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV. - Rivian announced significant price increases across its lineup that are resulting in some configurations going up by more than $12,000, and some by as much as $20,000 – these price increases also apply to people who had reservations for years, and they are not happy. - Forums and social media are full of Rivian reservation holders who are saying that they are canceling their orders because they are either don't want to pay the increase, or because they feel cheated by the company. - Out of over 3,000 respondents, the majority is canceling their orders with still a significant part of reservation holders being undecided. At the end of last year, Rivian disclosed having over 70,000 reservations for the R1T and R1S. - I am pretty sure that I'm going myself to cancel my reservation of four years. While I agree that it is a frustrating situation for reservation holders, it is likely the only way for Rivian to survive. · Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/03/02/rivian-buyers-canceling-alarming-rate-after-price-increases/ FULLY LOADED RIVIAN R1S SUV SHOWS $106,515 PRICE ON CONFIGURATOR - Many reservation holders took to social media to complain about the cost of their orders jumping significantly—yes, the price increases apply to all existing orders. The only way to avoid them is to accept a downgrade from the 800+ hp four-motor powertrain and Large battery to the 600+ hp dual-motor setup with the new Standard battery pack expected to exceed 260 miles of range. There's a problem, though: these variants are not going to be delivered before 2024. - Starting with the exterior, we chose the Adventure Package starting at $78,000, the iconic Rivian Blue paint (a $2,500 option), and the 22-inch Sport Dark rims ($3,500). As for the interior, we chose the optional Ocean Coast interior theme, which costs $2,000. - We then selected the Quad-Motor AWD drive system, which is now a $6,000 option, and the Large battery pack, also priced at $6,000. - The estimated cost of this fiscally irresponsible experiment amounted to $106,515—or $1,639 a month for a 72-month lease contract. - Interestingly, that's pretty much the same price as the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1, which starts at $105,595. For $68,575 the R1T has 835 horsepower from a quad-motor setup, which provides mega capabilities both on- and off-road that best pretty much any other light-duty truck on the market, even ones that are much pricier. Today Rivian announced new entry-level dual-motor versions of both the R1S and R1T, which come alongside a serious price hike for the existing quad-motor models. - the dual-motor variants use new motors designed and built in-house by Rivian. The company says the new motors are among the most power-dense single-drive units on the market and they have fewer moving parts than the Bosch motors, making them lighter cheaper to build. The dual-motor trucks will make more than 600 hp and 600 pound-feet of torque and hit 60 mph in as little as 4 seconds, just 1 second off the quad-motor models. - Rivian says the Standard pack will give the dual-motor R1T a range of over 260 miles; with the Large pack the dual-motor models will do over 320 miles. For reference, the quad-motor R1T with the Large pack is rated by the EPA at 314 miles of range while the R1S will do 316 miles. The R1T-only Max pack, which is coming in 2023 for the quad-motor model and 2024 for the dual-motor, will offer over 400 miles for both motor setups. Small roll angles, high roll damping, and direct steering feel would add to that experience, all potentially paired with a two-motor system announced for the 5 that produces an all-wheel output of 872 horsepower. That straight line feel isn't the focus, though. - Polestar's last concept car was announced only as a preview of its new styling language ahead of the release of the still-unrevealed 3 and 4 SUVs. It became a product in its own right, even though that decision required a major investment on Polestar's part. Now that the 5 is already in development, the O2 could theoretically build on most of the same developments fairly easily. For now, though, this is just a concept of what a Polestar halo car can be. With an interior made from recycled polyester and a frame from recycled aluminum, the two-door EV is a hardtop convertible. It's also very much a concept car that likely won't ever be produced as envisioned. - It has a similar look to Polestar's first concept car, the Precept, but this idea is sleeker and undeniably sexier as a sports car. - Adding to the Swedish car's intrigue is an autonomous drone that launches from the back of the car. The quadcopter ejects from behind the back seats and captures footage of the car going up to 56 mph. Once parked you can view and even edit the footage on the car's 15-inch front touchscreen. RIVIAN TARGETS $53BN VALUATION IPO - Rivian, the electric automotive company backed by Amazon, is targeting a valuation as high as $53bn when it makes its debut on the Nasdaq, potentially as soon as next week. At the top end of its range of $57-$62 a share, Rivian would begin trading at a value higher than the likes of carmakers Kia and Nissan, and would raise just less than $8.4bn from the offering. - Amazon ranked as Rivian's largest outside shareholder, with a 22.4 per cent stake. - The market debut would also result in a windfall for founder RJ Scaringe, which owns more than 17.6m shares that would be worth a total of $1.1bn at the top of the price range. Original Source : https://www.ft.com/content/e123d71e-8644-410c-9b4e-69a25914d867 - Rivian Automotive Inc, which is backed by Amazon.com Inc, is targeting a valuation of more than $53 billion for its U.S. debut, making the electric vehicle manufacturer potentially almost as valuable as rival Honda Motor. The startup is looking to raise up to $8.4 billion, setting it up to be the third-largest initial public offering (IPO) by funds raised in the past decade in the United States. - While Rivian has yet to sell any significant volume of its electric vans or trucks, it could likely be valued higher than Ferrari, although less than Honda, General Motors or its backer Ford Motor Co. Original Source : https://uk.news.yahoo.com/ev-startup-rivian-backed-amazon-205736630.html - Rivian is filling a spot in the EV market that no other company has yet filled: off-road vehicles such as trucks and SUVs. This gives the company an advantage over giants like Tesla, Ford and General Motors, who have announced plans for electric truck development but haven't yet released a product. - None of Rivian's financial information such as revenue or profit is yet available for investors to view and it will only be released with the S1 filing when the company is about to IPO. This means that investors often have to decide quickly whether they want to trade on the IPO date. Original Source : https://www.cmcmarkets.com/en-gb/ipo/rivian-ipo - Rivian first published its papers to go public in August, then aiming for a valuation of around $70 billion. Rivian has lost $2 billion since the start of last year, underscoring the costs and risks of developing electric vehicles. It expects to spend roughly $8 billion on facilities and equipment through the end of 2023. However, responding to a tweet about the blockbuster rally, Musk said Monday evening, “If any of this is based on Hertz, I'd like to emphasize that no contract has been signed yet.” - Musk's dose of cold water on the deal sent Tesla stock down over 5 percent to $1,147.64 by 6:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. The stock's still up more than 12 percent since the announcement of the Hertz deal. - a Hertz spokeswoman, insisted in a statement, “Deliveries of the Teslas already have started. As we announced last week, Hertz has made an initial order of 100,000 Tesla electric vehicles and is investing in new EV charging infrastructure across the company's global operations,” Original Source: https://nypost.com/2021/11/02/tesla-stock-falls-after-elon-musk-says-hertz-sale-isnt-yet-done-deal/ TESLA INCREASES MODEL 3 AND MODEL Y RANGES WITH 2022 MODEL YEAR - Tesla has updated Model 3 and Model Y line with the 2022 model year specs, and most of the configurations got higher range – though it depends on the wheels. - In an overnight update to its online configurator, Tesla changed the ranges of several of its most popular Model 3 and Model Y trims. - For the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, the range went from 262 to 272 miles on a single charge - Now it only refers to it as “Rear-Wheel Drive” and the different battery packs are only differentiated by the Model 3 Dual Motor also being called “Long Range.” - Model 3 Long Range, it goes from 353 to 358 miles with the 18″ wheels. - Model Y Long Range also got a bump. It went from 326 to 330 miles of range: Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/11/01/tesla-increases-model-3-y-ranges-2022-model-year TESLA STARTS SELLING HOME CHARGER THAT WORKS WITH OTHER EVS - Tesla has launched a new at-home wall charger that works with other electric vehicles - The new Level 2 wall charger was quietly added to the company's online store on the same day it started allowing non-Tesla EVs to charge at Supercharger stations in the Netherlands — the first step in a much larger plan to open up access to Tesla's charging network around the world. - The new charger uses a standard J1772 connector, not Tesla's proprietary one, meaning it should work fine with other electric vehicles in North America. It's competitively priced, too, at $415 - Tesla says it can charge at up to 9.6kW and is designed for both indoor or outdoor installation. It's basically a reworked version of the “Gen 2” Tesla home charger, though, meaning it won't have some of the more advanced features (like Wi-Fi) found on the Gen 3 version Tesla currently sells to its owners. HOW LONG DOES THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 TAKE TO CHARGE FROM 0% TO 100%? - Although we've already done some DC fast charging tests, we had the opportunity to repeat the test on an ID.4 First Edition, so we drained the battery down to zero and charged it up to 100% on an Electrify America 150 kW DC fast charger. - The ID.4 has an 82 kWh battery, of which 77 kWh is usable. Its peak charging rate is supposed to be 125 kW, but we were able to touch 131 kW. In fact, the ID.4 charged at 123 kW or more all the way up to the 30% state of charge point, and it took only 12 minutes to do so. - 50% state of charge in 20 minutes, and after 40 minutes, the vehicle is at 80% state of charge and has taken in 67 kWh. - While the vehicle was charging from 0% to 80%, the average power it took in was 110 kW, which is nearly 90% (88%, actually) of its stated peak charging rate. - As good a charging EV as the ID.4 is, it may get even better very soon. That's because we have heard that Volkswagen may soon increase the ID.4's maximum charge rate from 125 kW to 175 kW through an OTA software update. Besides looking quite different from any pickup truck on the market today, the Rivian R1T has a ton of storage space provided by its 4.5-foot bed, its frunk, its in-bed trunk, and its gear tunnel. - The answer as to what fits in the tunnel is: a bunch of whatever you like. The Rivian R1T's gear-tunnel volume is 11.6 cubic feet, or 0.6 cubic foot more than the R1T's frunk. On our (TAT) adventure, we fit a couple of carry-on sized suitcases, a couple of duffle bags, a backpack, and a briefcase in the tunnel all at the same time. The gear tunnel is deep, and if you're good with Tetris you can fit even more stuff than you think, especially if you have items you can fold, bend, or squeeze. The storage space was designed to fit golf bags, skis, snowboards, or collapsed strollers, but feel free to stash your umbrellas, fishing poles, or other similarly sized and shaped items. It also has a 12-volt outlet and a 110-volt outlet, one at each end, for powering various accessories. Nio also confirms that the ET7 will be the first model to be launched in Germany in 2022. - Nio had announced the market entry in Norway as the first European country. Starting this month, the first examples of the ES8 E-SUV will be delivered there. - Nio now confirmed that the first vehicles in Germany will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2022 – but unlike in Norway, it will not be the ES8, but the ET7 electric sedan. - The ET7 is a 5.10-metre-long premium sedan with up to 480 kW of power and – measured in the outdated NEDC – up to 1,000 kilometres of range when the largest battery with 150 kWh is installed. (NYSE: NIO) unveiled its all-new ET7 sedan at its Nio Day event in early January, and deliveries of the EV maker's first-ever sedan will likely begin in the first quarter of 2022. - Nio could release a version of the ET7 with low-cost lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, batteries, as opposed to the ternary lithium-ion batteries it now uses, the CnEVPost reported, citing information released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The ET7 was included in MIIT's list of the latest models that will be part of its product announcement, the report said. This suggests the sedan will likely hew to Nio's scheduled delivery timeframe. The ET7's description in the list reportedly suggests batteries for the model will be supplied by Nio's longtime supplier CATL. - LFP batteries are relatively cheaper than ternary lithium-ion batteries. The adoption of LFP batteries could make the ET7 affordable to potential customers. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. CHEVY BOLT EV SALES JUMP 54 PERCENT DURING Q1 2021"Chevy Bolt EV sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico while decreasing in South Korea and Brazil during the first quarter of 2021. In the United States, Chevrolet Bolt EV deliveries totaled 9,025 units in Q1 2021, an increase of about 54 percent compared to 5,873 units sold in Q1 2020." reports GM Authority: "Low Chevy Bolt EV sales volume has typically been an area of concern given GM’s EV-focused strategy, which calls for launching 30 electric vehicles by the year 2025. As a result, the vehicle’s overly positive sales performance during Q1 2021 represents a glimmer of hope that sales will continue to rise not just for the Bolt, but for EVs as a whole. The Bolt EV will receive a thorough refresh that will launch mid-2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle. Updates to the model include new front and rear fascias, along with various improvements to the interior. At the same time, it be joined by a new sibling model called Bolt EUV." https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/05/chevrolet-bolt-ev-sales-numbers-figures-results-first-quarter-2021-q1/ TESLA IS REPORTEDLY TESTING LUMINAR’S LASER SENSORS"A Tesla Model Y was photographed in Florida sporting rooftop lidar sensors made by buzzy sensor manufacturer Luminar. The sighting caused a bit of a stir among Tesla watchers, given Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s well-established disdain for the laser sensors commonly used by autonomous vehicle companies to create 3D maps of their environment." says The Verge: "Tesla has reportedly entered a partnership with Luminar to use lidar for “testing and developing,” according to Bloomberg. What exactly this partnership entails we don’t know for sure — neither company is commenting. But it could point to some shortcomings in the technology Tesla is using to power its “Full Self-Driving” driver assist feature. the Model Y was sporting a manufacturer’s license plate that is registered to Tesla in California. The same plate has been spotted on other Tesla vehicles, including a prototype of the Cybertruck." Or...it could be for validation of their vision-based system? https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/24/22451404/tesla-luminar-lidar-elon-musk-autonomous-vehicles TESLA HAS OVER 1 MILLION CYBERTRUCK RESERVATIONS"Tesla has already accumulated over 1 million Cybertruck reservations, according to the latest tally. The tally also keeps track of the different trims, and the mix has stayed consistent with 48% for the Dual Motor, 44.5% for the Tri Motor, and only 7.5% of reservation holders are ordering the base single-motor version." according to a crowdsourced tracker of VIN numbers says electrek:" Musk also warned that delays are possible as Tesla is still working on building Gigafactory Texas, where the Cybertruck is going to be produced, and the company would face challenges since the electric pickup truck is designed with an exoskeleton." https://electrek.co/2021/05/25/tesla-cybertruck-reservations-1-million-electric-pickup-trucks/ VW COULD MOVE TO ONLINE CAR SALES"VW Group boss Alex Smith has written to car dealers to tell them an agency sales model is being considered. Affecting dealers across the group’s brands – which include Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda – the letter says the group is planning to introduce an agency sales model for electric vehicles. This is thought to be a precursor to a wider roll out of agency sales across the VW Group on its other models." says Car Dealer MAgazine: "Agency models see car dealers paid a handling fee for dealing with new car sales. The manufacturer sells the cars directly to consumers via its main website. In a leaked letter marked ‘highly confidential’, the manufacturer told its ‘investors’ that a retail agency model for battery electric vehicles (BEV) is being planned. It says the model will be introduced for VW, Skoda, Cupra, Seat VW Commercial and Audi." https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/leaked-letter-reveals-vw-group-is-considering-an-agency-sales-model-across-its-brands/223770 OFGEM INVESTS £300M INTO EV CHARGE POINTS"The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, also known as Ofgem, has invested £300m into expanding the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network today, to push the pedal on the country’s low carbon future." according to CityAM: " 1,800 new charge points across motorway service areas and key trunk road spots. The investment will triple the current network, Ofgem said. Meanwhile, a further 1,750 charge points will be backed in towns and cities. Delivered by Britain’s electricity networks, the network investment marks a firm bid in the UK’s climate commitments ahead of hosting the UN’s flagship climate conference, COP26." https://www.cityam.com/ofgem-invests-300m-into-ev-charge-points-with-40bn-more-to-come/ PEUGEOT E-BOXER PRICED FROM £49,335 IN THE UKPEUGEOT has opened reservations for the new e-Boxer van, the brand’s largest full electric Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV). Available to order now, the PEUGEOT e-Boxer is available with two battery options and comes in three lengths to suit a variety of needs for both business and private users. Prices for the new PEUGEOT e-Boxer start from £49,335 (excluding VAT, after PiVG).The L2 length comes with a 37kWh unit, while L3 and L4 versions feature a larger, 70kWh battery. Both lithium-ion batteries are connected to a 90kW electric motor.73 miles or 139 miles. LARGEST ORDER OF ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUSES IN NORTH AMERICA"The largest student transportation provider in North America, First Student, recently placed the largest order of electric school buses with Lion Electric Company. " says Clean Technica: "Lion manufactures both all-electric medium- and heavy-duty urban vehicles, and together the two companies announced the order. First Student is ordering 260 all-electric LionC school buses. This is a huge win for fleet electrification and especially for the local kids since these new buses will not pollute the air students breathe as they board, deboard, and ride the buses like fossil fuel buses do." https://cleantechnica.com/2021/05/23/largest-order-of-electric-school-buses-in-north-america-placed-by-first-student/ JEEP WRANGLER 4XE PHEV CHEAPER TO LEASE THAN GAS-ONLY MODEL"Lease deals can be tricky and misleading. You have to read the fine print carefully. However, in the case of Jeep's current leasing incentive on the all-new Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid, it seems the deal is real, and it works out to be a much better value than the traditional gas-only Wrangler." writes InsideEVs: "Jeep is leasing the 2021 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe for just $249 per month for 36 months with $3,999 due at signing. This rate is for California, but the deal is similar in other areas. For comparison, the gas-only Wrangler starts at less than $30,000. However, the cheapest lease deal on a Wrangler without a plug comes in at over $300 per month with about $4,000 down. This is for a Wrangler with an MSRP that's $11,000 less than the 4xe." https://insideevs.com/features/509263/jeep-wrangler-4xe-cheap-lease/ HYBRID-ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE USES A SUPERCAPACITOR TO BOOST ITS RANGE"French company Nawa plans to manufacture a prototype of its Racer hybrid motorcycle that uses a supercapacitor to bolster its range. The company says using a 9 kWh lithium battery could provide about 110 miles of range, but adding a proposed 0.1 kWh ultracapacitor would increase that to 180 miles as well as boost peak power output" says Inputmag.com: "Supercapacitors are batteries with high voltage limits that can fill and drain electricity quickly, faster than lithium-ion batteries found in electric vehicles. They’re large and expensive though. Supercapacitors could act as a cushion, capturing more regenerative energy and also reducing stress on the main battery when the driver hits on the throttle." https://www.inputmag.com/tech/audi-is-testing-ev-charging-stations-that-store-energy-in-batteries-charged-overnight F-150 PRO EXTENDED RANGE PRICEArsTechnica picked up something I missed which was the price jump from 230 miles to 300 miles for the fleet-based F-150 Pro: "What we didn't know was how much of a premium Ford would charge for the extended-range version. This model is capable of about 300 miles on a single charge and will be supplied with a 240 V, 80 A charger (called the Charge Station Pro) that can fill the battery to 100 percent in eight hours. As it turns out, the electric pickup with the bigger battery will go on sale at $49,974 before incentives and tax credits." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/05/ford-reveals-pricing-for-the-f-150-lightning-pro-work-truck/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you have an opinion on hydrogen power for personal transport? VOLKSWAGEN INTRODUCES GOLF EHYBRID AND GOLF GTE PLUG-IN HYBRIDS Volkswagen is electrifying the eighth generation of the Golf with two new plug-in hybrid versions: the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE. This means that no less than two Golf models are now available as plug-in hybrid models for the first time. The new Golf plug-in hybrid versions feature a 50 percent-higher energy capacity (13 kWh) compared with the plug-in hybrid drive of the Golf Mk7. This allows a wider electric range. When the battery is charged, the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE start electrically and therefore with zero local emissions. The Golf eHybrid covers up to 80 kilometres fully electrically, while the Golf GTE boasts a locally zero emissions range of up to 62 kilometres. The E-MODE also permits all-electric driving on country roads and motorways. CHINESE EV MAKER XPENG LOOKS TO RAISE UP TO $1.11 BILLION IN U.S. IPO "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer XPeng said it hopes to raise up to $1.11 billion in its initial public offering (IPO) in New York, seeking to ride the enthusiasm for EVs even as U.S.-China relations remain strained." says Autobog: "The company said on Friday it intends to sell 85 million shares American depositary share (ADS), each representing two class A ordinary share, priced between $11 and $13 per share. At the top end of the range, XPeng's valuation stood at $9.17 billion. Share prices of EV makers including Tesla and Nio have surged in recent months. Founded in 2014, Guangzhou-based XPeng delivered its first Xpeng G3 vehicle to customers in December 2018 and launched a second model in April this year. The company manufactures cars in two factories in China." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/21/xpeng-ipo-valuation/ NIO TO EXPAND TO EUROPE IN 2021 "The Chinese electric car startup Nio wants to implement its expansion plans faster than originally planned. Nio currently operates exclusively in China – now first vehicles from the manufacturer are to be offered in Europe as early as the second half of 2021." according to electrive: "Company CEO William Li announced that the brand is to be represented in the most important global markets by 2023/2024. In Europe, Nio initially plans to compete in individual countries but has not yet revealed which countries these will be. It is quite possible that Nio could offer its models at significantly favourable prices in Europe. So far the startup offers their ES8, ES6 and EC6 in China." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/24/nio-to-expand-to-europe-in-2021/ TESLA FIGHTS BACK AGAINST OWNERS HACKING THEIR CARS TO UNLOCK PERFORMANCE BOOST "Tesla is starting to fight back against owners who are hacking their cars to unlock a performance boost that the automaker is itself selling as a software update. The most recent example is offering a $2,000 “Acceleration Boost” for the Model 3 Dual Motor. It unlocks roughly 50 hp in the Model 3 powertrain and shortens the 0 to 60 mph acceleration to 3.9 seconds." writes Fred at Electrek: "Earlier this year, we reported on a company called Ingenext that released a device that enabled Tesla owners to unlock the same capacity for half the price. All Model 3 owners have to do is plug a connector to their MCU, and they automatically get the 50 hp boost plus a few other features from Ingenext, like a “Drift mode.” But as it was suspected, Tesla is starting to fight back against the hack. Tesla says that it detected “incompatible vehicle modification,” and that it could result in a “potential risk of damage or shutdown.” The notification apparently stays stuck on the screen like that, but the vehicle remains drivable." Ingenext said they'll have a patch in the next couple of weeks https://electrek.co/2020/08/22/tesla-fights-back-against-owners-hacking-unlock-performance-boost/ PERFORMANCE BOOST UPGRADE COMPANY IS NOW WORKING ON TESLA MODEL 3 SR+ The same company is also working on an upgrade to the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, but not for better performance “Here is the list of features that will be available for this module: - rear heated seats control with the web app or by the rear passenger with rear windows switches; - ambient lights; - automatic driver door opening; - automatic frunk and trunk opening with proximity sensors; - drift mode; - battery pack heating; - live data: battery pack state of health, beginning of life pack energy, full nominal pack energy, isolation resistance of the battery, HV battery voltage, and current, LV battery voltage and current, battery, and charger temperature. We are also working on a module for the Model Y.” https://insideevs.com/news/440643/ingenext-upgrade-tesla-model-3-sr/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles HUBJECT & ENEL X STREAMLINE CHARGING PAYMENTS "Hubject has selected Enel X Financial Services, a subsidiary of Enel X, to provide financial services for payments between charging point operators (CPOs) and e-mobility service providers (EMPs) on its Intercharge eRoaming platform." says electrive: "The service, called Intercharge Settlement, will provide an automated, future-proof payment and invoicing solution and will be available in all eurozone countries by the end of this year. The aim of the new service is to reduce B2B process costs and help improve the profitability of all partner companies involved. Hubject says the partnership is also expected to facilitate “eRoaming as a key enabler of the widespread adoption of electric vehicles”." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/24/hubject-enelx-streamline-charging-payments/ FIAT E-DUCATO LAUNCHED "Fiat has confirmed UK pricing and specifications for the E-Ducato, it's pure-electric large van. Starting at £47,675 (exc VAT inc PiVG) the E-Ducato has a range of up to 148 miles on a charge, and comes with a choice of two battery options." accordin gto NExt Green Car: "The 79 kWh E-Ducato has the headline 148 mile range figure, though there's also a 47 kWh model with a range of up to 78 miles on a charge. Those figures rise to 192 and 99 miles respectively for the WLTP City range - that completed within an urban environment. The E-Ducato is Fiat's first entry into the electric vehicle market - a pure-EV Fiat 500e is on its way - and both will charge at up to 50 kW from DC units. AC charging is possible at up to 7 kW on the 47 kWh model and 11 kW on the 79 kWh E-Ducato. The panel van is available in two different heights, and three wheelbase wheelbase sizes. The chassis cab is available in three lengths and four wheelbase sizes." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8971/fiat-educato-launched/ ŠKODA ENYAQ IV NEARLY READY FOR ITS ELECTRIC LAUNCH "On September 1st, the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV will have its first 15 minutes of fame at its world premiere in Prague, the Czech Republic." according to CleanTechnica: " “The cars come with an 11 kW onboard charger and can obtain an 80% recharge in 40 minutes using a 125 kW Level 3 charger. Bringing extra attention to the ENYAQ and letting it have its world premiere before the ID.4 has one gives it more room to shine and stimulate the idea that ŠKODA is also super serious about electrification." CEO Bernhard Maier says: “The ENYAQ iV marks the beginning of a new era for ŠKODA, it is the figurehead of our E-Mobility campaign. With it, we’re making E-Mobility Simply Clever thanks to long ranges and short charging times. At the same time, the ENYAQ iV takes ŠKODA-typical virtues such as superior interior space, a trendsetting design and maximum functionality to a new level. Our first all-electric e-model based on Volkswagen Group’s modular electric car platform will be built at our main plant in Mladá Boleslav, at the heart of ŠKODA. This is an important step towards securing the future of the location and safeguarding jobs in the region.” https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/20/skoda-enyaq-iv-nearly-ready-for-its-electric-launch/ You can listen to all 873 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #807 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 12th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. FORD-VW JOINT VENTURE DETAILS FINALIZED Two years ago, Ford and VW announced they’d explore the possibility of jointly developing vehicles. A year later, they expanded their partnership, and today, the two detail the specifics. As early as next year, we could see the two commercial vans arrive, too. The smaller city van will be based on the latest VW Caddy model, while the one-ton cargo van is likely a replacement for the Ford Transit." reports Motor1: "Ford will also build an electric vehicle for Europe using Volkswagen’s electric MEB platform. Eight million vans and trucks could be produced over the products’ life cycles, according to the companies. That doesn’t include the estimated 600,000-plus EVs Ford could build every year, either." https://www.motor1.com/news/428019/ford-volkswagen-finalize-joint-venture/ VW E-GOLF #1 IN MAY IN NETHERLANDS, TESLA MODEL 3 LEADER IN 2020 " last month we saw the veteran VW e-Golf win its first monthly best seller title in 15 months, with 221 deliveries, just edging out April’s best seller, the Kia Niro EV (217 units) and its cousin, the Hyundai Kona EV (212)." says CleanTechnica: "Other surprises last month were the #6 Volvo XC40 PHEV and #7 Ford Kuga PHEV, with the Swede being last month’s best selling PHEV while the American crossover registered its best score so far, with 118 units, the highest score for a Ford in this market since December 2015, when 538 C-Max Energi (remember this one?) were registered. And why is this interesting? After years of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV domination, the PHEV race is now more open" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/10/vw-e-golf-1-in-may-in-netherlands-tesla-model-3-leader-in-2020/ CANADIAN SHOP CRACKED TESLA'S ACCELERATION BOOST The Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD and Performance versions are engineered similarly, with Tesla previously saying motors which tested to have higher performance were to be used in the faster version. However more recently there are reports that the cars are identical. And if you do own a LR AWD you can go back to Tesla anytime, pay $2000 and they'll unlock more performance. "What if you could bypass Tesla entirely and get your performance boost for just over half the price? a shop in Quebec, Canada called Simon André figured out how to swap a single-motor Tesla Model 3 to a dual-motor setup, and part of doing that meant busting into the power inverter's software to reconfigure it. Once the shop hacked its way through Tesla's IP, it found that switching to dual motors wasn't the only thing it could do. It could also add Tesla's 50 horsepower Acceleration Boost without clearance from the Tesla mothership." writes CNET: "Acceleration Boost usually would set you back $2,000 -- that's one hell of an in-app purchase -- but once this shop figured out how to unlock the boost itself. Now, the shop's owner spun off a new (and likely short-lived) company called Ingenext that offers an increase of just $1,100 as the "Boost 50" upgrade. even a full conversion from Model 3 Dual Motor to Performance spec which it calls the Ghost upgrade and adds 150 horsepower to your car." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-shop-hacks-acceleration-boost-model-3/ HYUNDAI AND KIA HONING HEAT-PUMP TECH "Hyundai and Kia, which share their parent company and some research and development resources, began using heat pumps in 2014 on the first-generation Kia Soul EV, and now most (but not all) of the two automakers' electric cars use them. As with other automakers, the heat pumps in current Hyundai and Kia vehicles turn refrigerant from a liquid to a gas, which is used to heat the cabin. This is more efficient than the resistance heating used in traditional systems, and minimizes the amount of energy drawn from the battery pack." says Green Car Reports: "The latest system is able to scavenge heat from a wide array of components, including the drive motor, inverter, onboard charger, and the battery pack itself, according to Hyundai. That heat is what turns the liquid refrigerant into a gas. A recent test of 20 EVs by the Norwegian Automotive Federation (NAF) appeared to prove Hyundai and Kia's point. In that test, a European-spec Hyundai Kona Electric not only recorded the longest range in cold weather, it also came closest to its European WLTP range rating, achieving 91% of that figure. Hyundai and Kia said they are continuing to test and refine their heat-pump tech, hoping to make additional improvements for next-generation EVs." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128440_hyundai-and-kia-honing-heat-pump-tech-for-next-generation-evs ALL-ELECTRIC CITROEN E-C4 CROSSOVER DEBUT ANNOUNCED FOR JUNE 30 "The C4 Cactus was one of the quirkiest looking recent Citroens that really hearkened back to the wacky character of older models sold by the dual chevron brand. Now it’s going to be replaced by an all-new model that ditches the Cactus from its name and is also available with a pure electric powertrain for the first time ever. This all-electric model is going to be called the e-C4 and Citroen has now confirmed that it will be officially unveiled on June 30" reports Yahoo! News: "What we already knew about the model was the fact that it is going to be underpinned by the same CMP platform atop which smaller models like the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, as well as the DS3 Crossback are built. And the electric e-C4 variant will most likely feature the exact same battery pack and motor setup. This means it’s going to have 136 bhp and 260 Nm (192 pound-feet) of torque and it will draw from a 50 kWh battery pack. The similar-size e-2008 has a claimed WLTP range of 310 km (193 miles), and we expect the e-C4 to be very similar in this respect." https://uk.news.yahoo.com/electric-citroen-e-c4-crossover-130000396.html LG CHEM HAS BEGUN MASS PRODUCTION OF NCM712 BATTERIES IN POLAND "LG Chem began mass production of NCM712 batteries in the 1st quarter of 2020. These batteries dramatically cut down on the use of cobalt in electric vehicle batteries (7 parts nickel to 1 part cobalt to 2 parts manganese), thus helping to cut costs. These batteries also have greater energy density than previous batteries" says Clean Technica: "The Wroclaw LG Chem plant is the largest EV battery production facility in Europe and mostly produces batteries for the Renault Zoe and Volkswagen Group vehicles (such as the Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan). These particular batteries, “LGX E78” batteries, are reportedly being used in the Volkswagen ID.3 and new Renault Zoe." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/11/lg-chem-began-mass-production-of-ncm712-batteries-in-poland-in-q1/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only? Badges, emblems, signs, and stickers: this week’s Carmudgeon show is all about why so many cars have badges for seemingly irrelevant things. Trim-level badging apparently helps with resale values, but why is it necessary to tell the cars behind you that you have Tuned Port Injection?Jason and Derek take an illustrated trip down memory lane, discussing the coolest (and silliest) badges ever put on cars. And why having a lighted star on the front of your Mercedes is actually a poverty badge — but having no badge on your V-12 E32 750iL could be a sign of exclusivity. Some of the badges covered in this episode include: Disc brakes, ABS, Honda’s ALB, Automatic, Automatique, Dynaflow and other transmission badges, 4WS, 16V, 24V, 32V, Twin Cam, EFI, MPFI, TBI, Tuned Port Injection, Twin H Power, Tri Power, Turbo, Turbo Diesel, Turbodiesel, V8-6-4, GT4, Alltrac, Fuel Injection, 5-speed, Overdrive, IRS, BMW 1800 TI/SA, SH-AWD, AWD, 4WD, 4 Wheel Drive, All Wheel Drive, Injection Electronique, Twin I Beam, Big Horn, King Ranch, Isuzu P’Up, Inezione, 4Porte, Quattroporte, Quattro, 4Matic, 4Motion, Q4, xDrive, SH-AWD, eAWD, TSI, TFSI, TDI, GDI, Hybrid, Anti-Theft Radio, VTEC, iVTEC, VVT, VVTi, VVTL-i, VVEL, Dual Motor, 16 Ventiler, P100D, Ludicrous, DMP, Cambiocorsa, Ferrari F1, Advancetrac, Advancetrac RST, Stabillitrak, PZEV, SIPS, Side Impact Protection System, GL, EX, DX, LE, Si, LX, S, SE, SEL, Lambda Sond, EV, Electric Vehicle, Kompressor, Turbo, BiTurbo, V8, V12, AMG, Radial Tuned Suspension, Handling By Lotus, TR5 PI, Magnum PI, 308 Magnum PI, Police Interceptor, DTS, Deville Touring Sedan, GTS, 911 GTS, 928 GTS, Celica GTS, Cayman GTS, Boxster GTS, Porsche GTS, Ferrari GTSThe Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them. The Tesla Cybertruck pickup has an official release date now, and we take a look at what to expect on November 21 at the unveiling in this special episode of the Electrek Podcast. Support our show! It's likely one of the most anticipated electric vehicles of the year. Pickup trucks represent a massive segment of vehicles in the US, and it desperately needs to have its average CO2 emissions significantly reduced. Electric pickup trucks are expected to do that. Rivian sort of launched the craze with the unveiling of the R1T at the LA Auto Show last year, and since then, several companies, including Ford and GM, two of the biggest pickup truck makers, have announced plans to make electric pickups. Now a year later, Tesla is going to unveil its own design for an electric pickup truck using its 15 years of experience making electric vehicles, and the EV community couldn't be more excited. In terms of what to expect, we already know a lot about the targeted specs of the truck. Tesla’s CEO has previously sought suggestions for features to add to the Tesla truck under development, and he revealed some planned features, like an option for 400 to 500 miles of range, Dual Motor all-wheel-drive powertrain with dynamic suspension, as well as “300,000 lbs of towing capacity.” Earlier this summer, Musk said that the Tesla Pickup truck will cost less than $50,000 and “be better than a Ford F150.” The biggest question is the design and size of the vehicle. Musk said that the Tesla Pickup Truck will have a “really futuristic-like cyberpunk Blade Runner” design. He later called it "an armored personnel carrier from the future" and said that "people would think it's something out of a movie set." The mystery of the Tesla pickup truck design is going to be answered on November 21 at the official unveiling event. We will discuss all that and more in a special episode of the Electrek Podcast today at 1:30 p.m. ET (10:30 a.m. PT) live on YouTube and later on your favorite podcast app. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbpZC__Ly9A&feature=youtu.be

Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 20th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. FIRST TEST DRIVES OF THE TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE According to Wall Street Journal, they got the first ever drive of Model 3 Performance According to Marques Brownlee. He got the first ever drive of Model 3 Performance Whilst Marques will put his on IGTV, let's stick to the other. "I have borrowed a new 2018 Tesla Model 3 Performance ($78,000, as tested) from the factory in Fremont, Calif., and I’m now quietly tearing the hide off this switchback road in the grass-gold hills near Silicon Valley for the world’s first test drive of the hot rod Tesla" whilst I wish that was me saying that, it's Dan Neil from WSJ.com: ""In the Performance version, two motors north and south equal 335 kW (450 hp) and digitally mastered all-wheel drive, with corner-exiting acceleration that will leave average BMW M4s with a soft auf Wiedersehen." "The Model 3 is more than futuristic. It’s optimistic. This is what ordinary cars should be, which is to say, better than they are." "But the car is a star. Doubters will have to bring it. Show me another car with an all-glass roof and five-star rollover crash rating. Point out another $80,000 sedan that out-clouds a Rolls-Royce, out-punches a Porsche Boxster and gets an electric equivalent of 116 mpg. You can’t, unless you’re building something in your garage we don’t know about." Meanwhile the carbon fibre spoiler on the Performance cars isn't fitted at the factory, but at service centres. And pics are now online of it. It's nice and clean, very simple, quite subtle. The badges aren't universally loved. If you have a Dual Motor your Model 3 now says Dual Motor, in words, on the back. It's much more of a signpost than something like "P100D" which doesn't mean anything to a laymen. But someone who's curious, who see's a new electric car and then reads the words Dual Motor, will at least know that it has two motors. Itself a fact many people might not have given any time to thinking about. Then again AWD would have been more specific, but again it's a bit car geeky. A reminder again on the current North America Tesla website timescales. Dual Motor Performance, or maybe we just call it Performance because dual motor is the only choice so it's kinda redundant saying Dual Motor Performance, ~1-3 Months. Dual Motor is ~2-4 months. Rear Wheel Drive ~1-3 months. And whilst you still can't select standard battery, it's 6-9 months. Of course there's no point changing the Tesla site to UK mode as the Design Studio doesn't work. But out of interest, whilst I'm there, there are 11 Used Tesla's on there, from £37,900 for a 2014 Model S up to £69,100 for a 2016 Model S 90D. https://www.wsj.com/articles/first-ever-review-of-the-tesla-model-3-performance-a-thrilling-modern-marvel-1532022533 KIA LAUNCHES NIRO EV IN KOREA We've seen the Hyundai Kona launch in the home market of South Korea and yesterday, the Kia Niro EV launched. The Niro EV mated with a 64 kilowatt-hour battery can travel up to 385 kilometres -- more than the distance between Washington and New York -- on a single charge. The model with a 39.2 kWh battery has a range of 246 km, the company said in a statement. The model sells for the equivalent of US$42,000) and Kia plans to launch the Niro EV in Europe later this year. I’ve been checking out the Kia Korea website, and whilst I can’t read a single word, I can tell the Niro EV has taken pride of place on the homepage. http://www.theinvestor.co.kr/view.php?ud=20180719000245 NISSAN LEAF NISMO GOES ON SALE IN JAPAN The Nissan LEAF NISMO will go on sale July 31 in Japan, featuring custom tuning computer for more responsive acceleration, custom tires and suspension for improved handling and ride comfort, and new exterior and interior design. The exterior also includes custom 18-inch aluminium wheels that minimize air resistance. At the moment, Nissan says there are no plans to offer the LEAF NISMO outside of Japan. Nissan aims to sell 1 million electrified vehicles a year, including the new Nissan LEAF, globally by fiscal 2022. THERE'S A WHOPPING 487 ELECTRIC VEHICLE MAKERS IN CHINA NOW China now has 487 electric vehicle makers based in the country. Jalopnik says: "Bankrolled by $15 billion in subsidies, with another $47 billion in the pipeline, a smattering of new manufacturers are angling for a piece of the action. Local governments across China are teaming up to give EV hopefuls millions of dollars to support their ambitions, and it’s happening all across the country. And WSJ: "Such partnerships are springing up all over China, spurred by Beijing’s call for the country to become a world power in electric-vehicle technology and by local governments eager to jump on the bandwagon. President Xi Jinping’s Made in China 2025 plan, launched three years ago to promote “domestic dominance and global competitiveness” in 10 sectors, includes electric vehicles." Back to Jalopnik: "There’s bright spots, to be sure. NIO, with its ES8 electric crossover, has raised $3.1 billion and already launched production. Byton wants to make an entry-level luxury SUV with a screen that covers the entire dash, and thinks it can start production in 2019. Even Faraday Future, virtually left for dead a year ago, could see itself making a production car or two by the end of the year (though it’s still running into similar issues of the past)." https://jalopnik.com/theres-a-whopping-487-electric-vehicle-makers-in-china-1827718353 NEW EV LAW FOR UK Who fancies talking about some new laws here in the UK? "Electric car chargers are set to become a more common sight on UK highways and motorways in near future, after the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act became law earlier today" according to Business Green: "The Act gives government the power to force petrol stations and motorway services to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers to ensure charging availability keeps up with market demand. It will also require operators to ensure charge points are compatible with all EVs and standardise payment systems for charging. In addition, the Act updates insurance rules to ensure drivers are covered even when self-driving modes are activated." https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3036207/chargepoints-head-for-the-highway-as-automated-and-electric-vehicles-act-becomes-law GATWICK LAUNCHES UK FIRST ELECTRIC CAR SHARING SERVICE In a UK airport first, passengers, staff and local residents can now reserve and pick up a 100% electric car at Gatwick – and return it to any of 300 compatible pick up/ drop off points across London or back at Gatwick - the airport announced today. The service - similar to schemes popular in other parts of the world - is being rolled out in partnership with Bluecity, the only company to operate a pan-London electric vehicle car sharing service with 100 cars currently available in total. Operating in a similar way to existing cycle schemes across the capital, ten cars and charging points are currently available on Gatwick’s South Terminal forecourt. This is Bluecity’s first airport hub and discussions are in progress to increase capacity. ECOTAP AND ALLEGO TO DEPLOY 4,500 PUBLIC CHARGERS IN THE NETHERLANDS "The Dutch provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel have awarded charger manufacturer Ecotap and charging solution provider Allego a contract to install and operate 4,500 public charging points in 43 cities." reports Charles Morris at Charged EVs: "The new chargers will make the maximum possible use of sustainably generated energy from local energy coops, and will automatically reduce charging speeds during peak hours. EV drivers gain access to the chargers using Allego’s Dutch public charging platform. The company uses separate platforms for Belgium and Germany." https://chargedevs.com/newswire/ecotap-and-allego-to-deploy-4500-public-chargers-in-the-netherlands/ OIL REFINERS EXPRESS WORRY OVER ELECTRIC CARS "A recent survey by the World Refining Association shows some oil industry executives are becoming concerned about how the proliferation of electric cars may affect their business. A core of respondents, however, seem unconvinced that electric cars are a threat." so says Green Car Reports: "In the survey published late last month, 61.1 percent of professionals in the oil industry said they were "somewhat worried," about electric cars' impact on their business." FOR E-TRUCK REVENUES, LOOK TO BYD RATHER THAN TESLA Seeking Alpha have noticed that orders for BYD Electric Trucks keep on rolling in. "Unlike its competitors, it has a full range up and running. This is key. Much of the talk has been about the big Class 8 trucks. In fact, smaller trucks in huge demand from the growth of e-shopping and consequent urban deliveries are a more important business. Other specialist products have great potential too. In garbage trucks alone, BYD has a range of products for which orders are starting to build up. Recently, the company closed a contract for 500 garbage trucks in Shenzhen (a city to which they have already supplied over 16,000 e-buses). These have a range of 280 kms." Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 17th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. NEWS IN BRIEF: * Tesla Model 3 cumulative production has now exceeded 50,000 according to the Bloomberg tracker, which has a bit of lag but has proven a close estimation * The Dutch city of Delft is the first city worldwide to have an electric vehicle charging station equipped with a pole that holds an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). * Ask Autoline is a one hour Q&A with John from Autoline about that Tesla Model 3 teardown and more from Sandy Munro LONG RANGE NISSAN LEAF E-PLUS COMING IN 2019, WILL HAVE 200 HP The next Nissan LEAF now has a confirmed name - the E-Plus Autoguide for the scoop: "The long-range Nissan Leaf, which will arrive for the 2019 model year, will get a boost in power and will be called E-Plus, the Japanese automaker has confirmed to AutoGuide. Speaking at a special event promoting the automaker’s upcoming Formula E race program, Nissan’s director of EV Marketing and Sales Strategy, Brian Maragno, revealed some details about the anticipated long-range Leaf. Maragno said the larger battery Leaf will receive the ‘E-Plus’ badge and will get a boost in power over the 40 kWh version. The 40 kWh Leaf is rated at 142hp, but the long-range model will have 200 hp on tap. " AutoEvolution say: "At the EVS29 electric vehicle convention in 2016, Nissan let it slip that it’s working on a 60-kWh battery. In all likelihood, it is this battery that we’ll find in the E-Plus, shadowing the capacity and range of the entry-level version of the Tesla Model 3." https://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2018/07/long-range-nissan-leaf-e-plus-coming-2019-will-200-hp.html https://www.autoevolution.com/news/new-nissan-leaf-version-coming-in-2019-confirmed-to-be-called-e-plus-127125.html JAGUAR LAND ROVER HAS PARTNERED WITH PLUGSURFING "Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with Plugsurfing to supply a premium charging service for its electric vehicles in selected markets in Europe. He did not confirm order numbers, however. The production car is expected to be revealed for the first time in 2019, ahead of hitting roads in 2020." "The Taycan sits on a new architecture, named J1 by Porsche. The brand's first EV will feature 800V charging technology that is intended to future-proof the car for several years after it hits the market, and company officials have already confirmed it is designed to enable fast-charging to 80% of the car’s range in just 15 minutes." TESLA HIRING SPREE IN JULY "Several months ago, Tesla went on a massive hiring spree as it geared up production, marketing, and customer touchpoints for accelerated deliveries of its more-affordable Model 3" according to Joshua Fruhlinger at thinknum.com: "Then the company let go of 9% of its workforce in an effort to make things a bit more efficient as it came under fire from all angles as it struggled to deliver cars. So it is with an equal mix of fascination and trepidation that we report that Tesla is embarking on another hiring spree. On July 1, 2018, the company listed 1,662 openings. As of yesterday, the company has 1,974 open positions. That's a jump of 19% in just over 2 weeks." Whereas layers of management seemed to be the focus of the previous reduction in workforce, these openings are sales or customer facing. 85 of the positions advertised are for Customer Experience Specialist. https://media.thinknum.com/articles/tesla-hiring-activity-jumped-19-since-july-1/ MODEL 3 DUAL MOTOR AND PERFORMANCE VERSIONS ARE NOW EPA-RATED On Monday of this week the Model 3 Performance and Dual Motor, or P3 and P3D if you like, were officially rated by the EPA which opens the door for those cars to be delivered. Fred Lambert at Electrek says: "The EPA has now confirmed that both the Performance and non-Performance Dual Motor versions have a 116-MPGe rating with 120 MPGe for city driving and 112 MPGe for highway driving. As for the range, they both get officially rated at 310 miles on a single charge, like the Long Range rear-wheel-drive version, but the dual motor Model 3 vehicles officially have an efficiency of 29 kWh per 100 miles versus 26 kWh per 100 miles for the single motor version." https://electrek.co/2018/07/17/tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-versions-official-epa-ratings/ COMMUNITY YouTube comments You can listen to all previous 183 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 28th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Follow Up: confirmation from Elon about Pickup Truck power outlets TESLA IS BOOSTING MARGINS BY CUTTING PRICES There was a surprise reduction in some Model 3 specs yesterday. The dual motor option reduced from $5,000 to $4,000. And the base cost of the P3, the Performance model, came down from $78,000 to $64,000. They did it by making a chunk of things optional in one package of $5,000 - 20″ Performance Wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, carbon fiber rear spoiler, aluminium alloy pedals, and a top speed boost that enables the electric car to max out at 155 mph. There was some confusion over why they'd make the car available at a lower cost and let you spec UP in the configurator. I don't know why you'd be confused...have you bought a base model BMW? A base model Mercedes? No didn't think so. Even the smallest things are optional extras on those cars. The margins are in the options. com: "That Performance upgrade is almost all margin for Tesla - if the changes are anything like the Model S and Model X, they'll primarily be in the form of a slightly different drive unit with a larger inverter that can deliver power to the motors more quickly. But a lower entry price with fewer other frills is likely to result in a meaningfully higher take rate for the upgrade that translates into much higher margins on the Model 3. Customers still have the ability to price their Performance Model 3 even higher, with options like enhanced auto pilot, full self-driving and premium paint." White seats and premium paint choices are also optional at $1,500 each. The basic, 64k Model 3P, has 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and 310-mile range. Do you agree? Is choice better? With much shorter wait times for the Performance versions, in the range of 2-4months, do you think the lower starting price get more people opting for it? Also - do you want a badge? Model 3 now gets it's own badge. However whereas with the S and X you knew the model by the size of the pack - starting out at 40 and ending up at 100, with the M3 they want to focus on range. Very much Apple's way of selling phones, they don't label according to processor speed! Dual Motor M3's will be badged accordingly, with the words Dual Motor in caps, and the Performance gets underlined. ANOTHER INTERNAL TESLA EMAIL HINTS AT GOOD NEWS Electrek are reporting in an internal email from Elon to staff, saying that those analysts expecting a disappointing Q2 are in for a 'rude awakening'. In this case, I'll leave it to user Billy who said this in his comment: "f you follow Elon's Twitter, you can pick up on his mood pretty easily. He seems to be in high spirits and I think that is really good news. I'm expecting 1,000 DELIVERIES per day in July as they deliver stockpiled cars. They will prioritize Performance and AWD in Q3 which will push their revenue super high. As more people get their cars and show them off to friends more orders will be pouring in. It's a self licking ice cream cone and it is delicious!" https://electrek.co/2018/06/27/elon-musk-tsla-tesla-model-3-delivery-numbers-internal-email/ SPY PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURES HONDA PILOT PLUG-IN HYBRID "A shot by spy photographer Brian Williams in Automotive News (subscription required), shows an updated Honda Pilot with both a reconfigured fuel filler door, and a large, square opening on the front left fender, where automakers often put charge ports for electric cars." says Green Car Reports: "If the Pilot plug-in hybrid used the same pack as the Clarity, it could get between 30 and 35 miles of electric range, based on similar sized vehicles. Honda has been expanding installations of its two-motor hybrid system found in the Accord Hybrid, Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, and Insight, and the Pilot would likely use that system, according to Automotive News." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1117443_spy-photographers-capture-honda-pilot-plug-in-hybrid GETTING CHEAPER TO DRIVE EVS "Recent fuel price rises have already had a significant impact on the day-to-day running costs of traditional vehicles in the UK. In comparison, NewMotion found that the Nissan Leaf, the UK’s most popular EV, can be fully charged for just £2.37, during the night when electricity is cheaper and has a range of 100 miles" says Electric Cars Reports: "This is supported by recent research from Bloomberg, which found that savings enjoyed by EVs will only increase over time. In particular, Bloomberg predicts that the cost of battery manufacturing will fall as demand continues to grow. By 2030 battery costs will only represent 18% of the entire manufacturing process, compared with 42% today" https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/06/the-cost-of-car-ownership-is-shifting-in-favour-of-electric/ PIVOT POWER BATTERY PLANS EMERGE OUTSIDE SOUTHAMPTON Pivot Power made big headlines within they announced a 2GW nationwide network of battery storage for the UK, and excited EV drivers by saying their battery hubs would also include EV chargers. That makes sense, you can charge without drawing from the grid. Now plans are out for their first site - and it's not far from where I'm sitting now. it will be a 50MW site in Southampton which is a port in the south of the UK. If you've taken a large cruiseliner somewhere, it will have gone from Soton. The planning database for the council reveals the details but there's nothing yet about EV charging. They want to build it on National Grid land near an existing substation, which you would do for easy grid connection. It's just off the M27 for any of my UK listeners, with 25 batteries ready to provide frequency response in the same was an other battery systems like the Tesla battery packs in Australia, probably the most famous example. COO Matthew Boulton told Current± "“The battery is the first stage and it unlocks everything; without a battery project we don't have an EV project. A big battery next to a big substation is, we hope, a relatively uncontroversial development so we're keeping the first piece nice and well boundaried to get it through, In Southampton the National Grid land is there and from a lease point of view we can get cracking fairly quickly. [We want] to secure the battery and know it has approval before we also spend a lot of money on planning of EV hubs.” "We're not sticking 100 chargers in but the sites will have 100 car parking bays and we're taking enough power so that over time they can all have rapid chargers.” "Bolton added that the company wanted to “make a statement” with the number of chargers it will initially seek to install, with “closer to 50 than 10” charge points of various speeds planned in the short-term.These are expected to be located within 5km of the substation and battery in a convenient location for drivers. In the case of Southampton, there could be even less distance between the two owing to the projects close proximity to major roads and Southampton itself." Pivot Power’s chief technology officer Michael Clark will be speaking about the company’s plans, as well leading a wider discussion on powering the EV revolution, at next week’s EV Infrastructure Summit. Hosted by Current±’s publisher Solar Media, tickets are still available to attend the two-day conference on 3&4 July and can be purchased here: http://ev.solarenergyevents.com/ ...where you can also find a full programme and list of speakers. NISSAN SYLPHY NOW AVAILABLE Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Nissan announced that its first all-electric model under the Nissan brand in China – the Sylphy Zero Emission – is now available for order. It’s offered through Nissan’s joint venture subsidiary, Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company (Dongfeng Nissan)." "Nissan Sylphy Zero Emission specs: 38 kWh battery for 210 miles (338 km) of range 80 kW and 254 Nm electric motor (front-wheel drive) 0-50 km/h (31 mph) in 4.4 seconds 6 kW on-board charger DC fast charging (0-80%) in 45 minutes using 50 kW charger 144kmh/89 mph top speed https://insideevs.com/nissan-sylphy-ev-is-now-available-for-order-in-china/ AB VOLVO: RENAULT TRUCKS UNVEILS ITS SECOND GENERATION OF ELECTRIC TRUCKS A press release dropped from Renault about their truck plans. The Renault Trucks Z.E. line-up, consisting of the Renault Master Z.E (Sept 2018, 22kWh, 57kW motor, 225 N-m of torque), Renault Trucks D Z.E. (both with packs from 200-300kWh, 185kW motor, 425 N-m, 300km/186 real world range, ranging from 3.5 to 26 tonnes) and Renault Trucks D Wide Z.E. (200kWh pack, dual motor rating 370kW, 850 N-m 200km/124 real world miles). The latest technological advances have made electric trucks an economically viable alternative for hauliers, leading Renault Trucks to launch a complete Z.E. range. The specially designed 16 t version of the Renault Trucks D Z.E. is ideal for urban and controlled temperature deliveries. The Renault Trucks D Wide Z.E. will come in a 26 tonne version for efficient refuse collection. Both models will be manufactured at the Renault Trucks plant in Blainville-sur-Orne, Normandy, France in the second half of 2019. A medium-duty Renault Trucks Z.E. vehicle has an operating range of up to 300 km depending on usage and battery configuration. The battery pack is the most expensive item when buying an electric truck. Thanks to rapid DC charging, the Renault Trucks D Z.E. and Renault Trucks D Wide Z.E. lithium-ion batteries can be fully charged in as little as one to two hours. For overnight AC charging, the time to fully charge a 300-kWh battery is 12 hours. Monday 9th April 2018. A shout out to Simon LaSalle who listen in Virginia. “Hi Martyn I enjoy the show every day, I like to support my favourite podcasts on Patreon, do you have a page?” Thanks Simon, I love hearing from people who enjoy the news every day. I must admit I’d had to pay for more storage and streaming because the podcast seems to have found a wider audience lately but no not yet, I’m happy to foot the cost myself but your support is really appreciated. ELECTRIC GT We’ll start with a tease and GT Holding is the organisers of the electric Tesla GT series. ”Electric GT Holdings have got big news to share ... tomorrow! Follow us and sign up for our newsletter now so you don't miss the big announcement.” I’ll cover the news on tomorrows show for you. I’m hoping it’s going to be the dates of the first races, maybe some drivers, or even more specs on the cars. We know they were approved by the FIA on 1st Feb, and a week before that the car passed the crash tests. And that car being a Tesla P100DL. MUSK TWEETS Elon has been using Twitter increasingly lately, not just for chat, but specific announcements. And in response to a question about the dual motor Model 3 he said: CARWOW REVIEW LEAF 2.O One of the most visited car channels on YouTube is Carwow and now they’ve spent some time with the next gen Nissan LEAF. “The Nissan Leaf is a comfortable, eco-friendly family car with good looks. However, its infotainment system is outdated and the interior quality is inconsistent” Pros: Decent range Big boot for a car this size Nippy Cons: Some cheap-looking materials inside Regenerative brakes feel odd at first Dated infotainment MERCEDES ADD ANOTHER EV We’re quickly learning about the naming conventions of major car makers with their electric models. With VW we have the ID, ID CROZZ and ID VIZZION, with Audi it will be the e-tron range, with BMW we know they’ve registered iX1, iX2, iX3 etc. And with Mercedes, the EQC was quickly joined by the EQA and now the EQS, which will be C-Class sized. Electrive reports on Michael Kelz, head of development for the EQC Crossover which should be on sale by the end of this year, expects the EQS to be available by 2020. The sedan will be an individual model, based on the MEA architecture platform, and will not simply be an electric version of the existing vehicle, in this case the regular S-class. This marks a difference to the other traditional luxury car brands, as Audi and Jaguar both decided to electrify their vehicles instead of redesigning them, particularly with the Audi A8 and the Jaguar XJ. Concerning the name of the new vehicle, Mercedes has been planning the move since 2016, when they reserved the rightsto the names EQA, EQC, EQE, EQG and EQS in the UK. Recently the car manufacturer also reserved the naming rights in Canada for the EQ family additions. CNET say: “It will be separate from the standard S-Class, which is expected to begin a new generation in 2020, the same year that it's believed Mercedes will debut the EQ S. The two cars will reportedly be built on separate platforms, with the EQ S relying on an EV-specific chassis engineered to accommodate large batteries.” FORD STLL UNCLEAR ON ELECTRIC FUTURE Ford aren’t exactly known as electric trailblazers, and 247WallSt website reports: “Year to date Ford’s shares are down 11.7%. GM’s are off 9.9%. Toyota’s are down 2.3%. Ford’s domestic sales rose 3.5% in March to 243,021. Its sales for the first quarter are down 2.7%. The deeper issue is whether Ford has a chance to be a leader in electric cars and autonomous vehicles. CEO Jim Hackett’s plans have not caught the eyes of investors. Ford is seen as too far behind most of the industry for both categories. It not only faces massive plans from every other major car company but from smaller companies led by Tesla”. ELECTRIFY THE SKIES Thelocal.no report on regional carrier Wideroe Airlines, operating in Norway's far north, plans to renew its fleet of twin-engine Bombardier Dash 8 planes with electric-powered aircraft by 2030: “"Many people say that we must get rid of air transport because we will never be able to deal with emissions and noise, but this is an outdated approach," said Norwegian Transport Minister Ketil Solvik-Olsen, who recently hosted an aviation conference in Oslo. Norway, the largest oil and gas producer in western Europe, is paradoxically a pioneer in the field of electric transport. The Nordic nation aims for all new vehicle registrations to be zero emission by 2025and launched a first electric ferry in early 2015.” After land and water, the northern kingdom is now turning to the sky with the goal of electrifying all short haul flights in just over 20 years. "In my mind, there is no doubt: by 2040 Norway will be operating totally electric," said Dag Falk-Petersen, head of the country's public airport operator, Avinor. Saturday 3rd March 2018. DUAL MOTOR DELIGHT Firstly some news in brief, and this a tweet coming from Ride The Lightning podcasts Ryan McCaffrey, or DMC Ryan on twitter…the first dual motor Tesla Model 3 seen on the road: ”I spotted #8370 in the wild this weekend in San Francisco. It’s red with 19″ Sport wheels, if you’re curious.” GTE BECOMES THREE …but first, where do you stand on Plug In Hybrids? I think they’re the gateway drug of the next 5 years to get people used to driving on electric. They provide the safety net for those who worry that, for the one long trip they do each year, somehow the tabloid newspapers are right and batteries don’t go very far. Others say that if you’re going to plug a car in, just plug in a pure battery electric car. One of the most effective engineering solutions is the way VW’s drivetrain works so well in the Golf GTE and Passat GTE. All electric when you want, up to 80mph, and it seamlessly works with a petrol motor when for either range or power. Well now the third GTE has been spotted and it’s the ever popular crossover SUV size car, of a Tiguan. It’s been spied testing without camouflage and with the GTE badges on so it’s almost ready. Due to be unveiled in April, production starting later this year in Germany with deliveries before the year end. The Tiguan will probably do 0-60 in that 8 second range if it uses the same 10kWh-ish battery and powertrain from the Passat. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/03/vw-tiguan-gte-scooped-plenty-plug-hybrid-badging/ EGOLF SALES RECORDS Meanwhile, in the bit of VW which makes rather larger battery packs, the new eGolf is going down well in Western Europe. According the InsideEVs it was the best selling BEV in Western Europe in January 2018 with 1,864 registered. That’s only a few more than the Zoe and i3 but a win’s a win! The 36kWh battery is nothing to write home about but on recent cold weather test video on YouTube it fared the same as the new LEAF – both of which were beaten by the ridiculously efficient IONIQ with it’s teeny weeny battery. However Renault will point out that the Zoe is production constrained and they could have sold more – well, they should have built more! https://insideevs.com/vw-e-golf-was-1-selling-bev-in-western-europe-in-january/ EVgo RAPID PLANS In North America EVgo is cutting the cost of public charging and they say “drastically simplifying”. Public charging seems to be a bit of a battlefront with a lot activity around chargepoint makers, installers and even the businesses who often foot the costs of having them installed. EVgo is launching a simple Pay As You Go option alongside a $9.99 / month membership, although there’s a caveat to say what you’ll pay depends on where you are. Membership pricing is by the minute and costs $0.15 to $0.21 per minute. As they’re rapid chargers you’re limited to 60 minutes off peak and 45 minutes during daytime. https://www.evgo.com/ NEW MEGA MEGA CHAdeMO Staying with charging and CHAdeMo could be getting even faster. It’s called CHAdeMO 2.0 and increases the theoretical voltage to 1000volts, and 400kW of power. You may have heard about the recent wave of new 150kW chargers due to be installed this year, or even the 350kW CCS chargers VW’s Porsche are installing at every dealership to promote the Mission-E, or even the new rapid charging networks arriving in Europe. It’s the ever-present chicken and egg debate – there aren’t any cars to use the spec yet but when someone like Jaguar launch the I-PACE yesterday with 100kW charging, you see all those internet haters pointing out chargers don’t get that powerful. With almost 20,000 CHAdeMO chargers worldwide, used by the 775,000 cars sold with a compatible plug, it’s great to see investment in future charging needs. https://www.chademo.com/ MERCEDES RELEASE EQC PICS Finally, anything you can do, I can do better. Toady has seen a slew of articles about the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV, the day after the release of the I-PACE got everyone’s attention. It could just be a coincidence, but it’s interesting timing for Merc to release new shots and details of the testing program. I’ll put a link in the podcast description and on the blog at evnewsdaily.com if you want to read “Five questions for Michael Kelz, Chief Engineer EQC”. https://www.motor1.com/news/234658/mercedes-releases-first-image-eqc/ Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested. The oculomotor system is one of the best studied motor systems. Afferents from a variety of premotor areas converge on the motoneurons in the three oculomotor nuclei to produce the different types of eye movements. All oculomotor motoneurons participate in all types of eye movements, and it was generally accepted, that these motoneurons form a relative homogenous group which provides the final common pathway for extraocular muscle (EOM)-motor innervation. The EOM in mammals, the effector organs of the oculomotor system, are fundamentally different from skeletal muscle. They have two functionally different layers, global and orbital layer, and are composed of two major muscle fibre classes, singly-innervated (SIF) and multiply innervated fibres (MIF). Previous studies in monkey revealed that SIF and MIF motoneurons are anatomically separated and have different premotor inputs, which support the idea of a dual motor innervation of EOM rather than a final common pathway from motoneuron to EOM. Up to date, neither motoneuron type has been further characterized nor has any study proven their presence in other species to support the hypothesis of the dual motor innervation as a common concept in mammals. The functional implication of this system remains speculative, though a role of MIFs together with their motoneurons in a sensory feedback system controlling the EOMs is quite possible and heavily debated. However, the lack of a common proprioceptor in eye muscles does not support this theory. In monkeys SIF and MIF motoneurons of extraocular muscles were identified by tracer injections into the belly or the distal myotendinous junction of the medial or lateral rectus muscle and further characterized by combined tracer detection and immunohistochemical methods. The experiments revealed that the MIF motoneurons in the periphery of the motor nuclei lack non-phosphorylated neurofilaments, parvalbumin and perineuronal nets, whereas SIF motoneurons intensively express all three markers. In addition to the histochemical differences, the MIF motoneurons are on average significantly smaller in size than the SIF motoneurons. Analogous to the study in monkey, the SIF and MIF motoneurons of the medial and lateral rectus muscle of rats were identified with tracer injections and further characterized by immunolabelling. For the first time it was shown that both motoneurons types are present in rat as well. The MIF motoneurons lie mainly separated from the SIF motoneurons, and are different in size and histochemical properties. As in monkey, the smaller MIF motoneurons lack non-phosphorylated neurofilaments and perineuronal nets, both of which are definite markers for the larger SIF motoneurons. A possible proprioceptive control of eye movements requires the presence of proprioceptive structures. The palisade endings represent the best candidate for an EOM-proprioceptor. They were analysed using antibody stains against the synaptosomal associated protein of 25kDA, SNAP-25. With this robust method palisade ending-like structures were identified for the first time in the extraocular muscles of the rat. Furthermore the rat palisade endings show characteristics of sensory structures thereby supporting their role in proprioception. In conclusion, the EOM of both monkey and rat are innervated by two sets of motoneurons which differ in localization, morphology and molecular components. These findings further support the presence of a dual motor control of EOM that may apply widely to mammals, since it was verified in monkey and rat. Palisade endings are a ubiquitous feature of mammal EOM and most likely provide sensory information used for the proprioceptive control of eye movements.
