Nicole is a Holistic Nutritionist and Yogo Instructor.Nicole first started practicing yoga in 2010, when she was encouraged to explore the practice while working for Lululemon. As she dove deeper into the practice, Nicole found what a gift this practice could be on the path of self discovery. This led Nicole to take her first 200HR teaching training in 2014, and she has since taken teacher trainings every 1-2 years. Nicole is currently working on her 300 HR training with Clara Roberts Oss with plans to be an 500 RYT at the end of 2021. As the importance of her study of yoga grew, and other holistic sciences like Ayurveda, Nicole was drawn to study nutrition. In April 2020, Nicole graduated from the Holistic Nutrition Program at Pacific Rim College; the most comprehensive on-site program of Holistic Nutrition in Canada. She plans to combine these two modalities to show others how they can then care for themselves with movement and food. Alongside yoga, Nicole has spent the last 10 years working in community building and leadership development. Nicole brings her strengths in positivity and compassionate leadership into everything she does. It's not easy to understand "Yoga" entirely because of its depth. Having originated in the Eastern world and migrating to the Western World, many powerful lessons have been lost on many of us. While we understand some of these life-changing perspectives, the extent to which we can relate them to our audience can be challenging. Yoga doesn't have to be as complicated as it seems, and in this episode with Byron de Marsé, he shares his wisdom on how to connect the amazingness of the Eastern perspective of yoga to the modern-day world. More importantly, how you can use simple language and experiences from your life to inspire and lead others. - - - Listen to this 45-minute episode to get a glimpse of the wisdom that comes from Byron's 10,000 hours of teaching yoga. I wish we could have extended this episode even longer... and you'll feel the same way once you jump in and listen! Have you heard about this rumor? The word on the streets is that taking a 200HR YTT is not meant to get you ready to teach in the real world! You'll have to take additional training, like a 300HR, to be ready to teach! That's BS! And a play for more money... Graduating from a 200Hr YOGA TEACHER TRAINING, and walking away with a certificate of being able to call yourself a "Yoga Teacher"... any training should be giving all the tools to do exactly that! Not an excuse/justification for the lack of preparation from trainers. (clearly some passion behind this one!) - - - Listen to this 25-minute episode to hear the truth behind why this rumor has spread and why it is becoming widely accepted as the 'norm', but more importantly how to not accept this rumor as fact! We'll also share about the practical and fundamental tools needed to teach yoga in the real world, which include: Sequencing Teaching methodology Public Speaking Injury Prevention Practice Teaching - - - If you enjoyed this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 187: How to Choose a Yoga Teacher Training with Cecily Milne Description: The first big step that we often take in our journey to become yoga teachers is our Yoga Teacher Training (YTT), and in many ways, much of how we teach is influenced by our YTT experiences. However, not all YTTs are created equal, and some are better than others. Cecily Milne published the blogpost “10 ways to make your yoga teacher training suck less”, and has some pointers on what makes a good YTT. Cecily Milne is the Founder of Yoga Detour™, which began as a 200HR program, but has evolved since then. Today, Cecily focuses on education within the yoga and movement teaching community, and hopes to provide other professionals in this space with the resources she wishes she had access to as a teacher and business owner. She offers online learning courses as well as in-person training to support others and help them grow as yoga teachers and movement educators. What sets a great YTT apart from the rest? Shannon and Cecily dig into why many teacher training programs today fail to set trainees up for success, and the top lessons Cecily learned from running her own 200hr TT. Cecily also highlights the importance of diversity and representation teacher trainings, teaching skills and evaluations, and the business aspect of running YTTs. Ultimately, choosing a YTT is all about finding the right fit between the student and the school. Whether you are brand new to yoga and are thinking about a YTT, or if you are wondering how to put an amazing YTT together, this episode is full of valuable insights. Key Takeaways: [4:53] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Cecily Milne. [6:41] What does Cecily do and who does she do it for? [8:33] How did Cecily get started with yoga? [10:19] What was Cecily's first 200-hour yoga teacher training like? [12:20] What inspired Cecily to write her article "10 ways to make your yoga teacher training suck less" [14:05] What are some of the most important things to consider when choosing a yoga teacher training? [17:16] Shannon and Cecily discuss how to make yoga teacher trainings more representative and inclusive. [21:18] What are some questions we should be asking when considering a yoga potential teacher training? [23:41] How can we bring up the topic of race and representation in a yoga teacher training? [25:00] Cecily highlights some other questions to ask when considering a yoga teacher training, particularly around the business aspects of being a yoga teacher. [32:36] As much as those taking the training programs, those offering the training programs need to ask themselves why they are providing that program and who it is for. [33:48] Shannon and Cecily discuss where being a part of Yoga Alliance ties in with yoga teacher trainings. [35:29] Accountability should be a big part of a yoga teacher training. Cecily shares how she helps teachers with learning to teach. [39:42] Cecily has had some great success with getting her students record themselves teaching. [41:40] How can teachers deal with the privacy aspect and getting consent from their students to record? [43:10] It is important for students to know what their needs and priorities are in choosing a yoga teacher training, and to find a school that caters to that and is a good fit. [44:08] Shannon recommends that you talk to previous graduates from the yoga school or training program you are considering. [45:06] Get in touch with Cecily via her website to find out more about her work and the training she offers. [46:47] Shannon shares her key takeaways from this interview. On this episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, I speak with renowned yoga teacher and mother Paula Lynch Liberis. Paula and I have a very open and candid talk about shifting from high profile yoga teacher to mother of (almost) 3 children. Paula’s honesty and humbleness will surely speak to those who have ever faced a major shift in job or body. Topics covered: What brought Paula to the path of yoga and what lead her to teach yoga.Discussing her online post where she describes the shift she went through and the acceptance of leaving the field she loved and embracing her dharma of motherhood.Difficulties of stepping aside from her flourishing career.Advice for mothers at a cross road of career and child.Moving from a very strong and time consuming meditation, pranayama and asana based practice to a more “family friendly” practice. What practice and meditation look like with 3 kids in the picture and the change with each child. How yoga helped during pregnancy and birth.Letting go of the practice and career identity once held prior to children. The importance and influence yoga can have on parenting.Staying active or in touch with the yoga community while raising her girls. What her future career path looks like.About Paula Lynch: Paula is an ERYT-500 Yoga Works Certified Instructor affiliated with the Yogaworks Teacher Training programs. Her teaching style is influenced by her years of study in the Ashtanga vinyasa method and the precision and clarity of Iyengar yoga which she mainly practices now. Paula’s teaching style expresses yoga as an incredible technique that can give us access to the layers of our physical and energetic bodies through patient and intentional practice. Her primary teacher is Genny Kapuler, and she has spent years studying with Alison West and Glenn Black who have helped her experience the world through her practice. She has studied Bodytuning, an in depth method of manual therapy with Glenn Black and Shmuel Tatz, PT and maintained a private practice working with clients in this method as well as assisting Dr. Tatz in his clinic. Her continuing studies of anatomy and kinesiology are applied to her understanding and teaching of yogasana in her classes through breath awareness, playful movement and alignment of the physical body. Paula practices yoga as a form of devotion, prayer and self-study and understands the practice as so much more than just physical – it is cellular, intellectual and spiritual involving our entire being. She incorporates pranayama and yoga nidra in her classes and workshops as essential elements to a balanced and nourishing practice. She has taught classes in New York City at Yogaworks since 2005 as well as 200HR and 300HR teacher training for Yogaworks. She also serves as a guest anatomy teacher for other 200HR yoga teacher training programs in the city. She is currently taking a sabbatical from teaching so she can be home raising her two little girls (with baby number three on the way), and works primarily mentoring other teachers and teacher trainers.
