I call it the Baliverse. Is Bali really a spiritual place? Yes. Is Ubud full of fake coaches and pretentious tossers? Also yes. Ubud has two polar opposites: the yogis and the digital nomads. Which one will you be if you were to go? After spending two months in Ubud I've gotta say that there are more fake humans with no guts than true spiritual souls. Spirituality has become a product, and youth / sexual appropriation is sometimes the end goal when selling "freedom” in places like The Yoga Barn, Ubud. Old men dancing with young women, people with no life experience selling life coaching packages. Are you really sure you know what to expect from Ubud?

How To Die Happy
Ep23 Devotion, love, relationships, Kirtan, and Bhakti Yoga, with Audrey & Chris Sarquilla

How To Die Happy

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2022 115:01

On the How To Die Happy Podcast, we cover a wide range of subjects designed to open hearts & minds to the myriad possibilities available to learn how to master better this crazy world in which we live. Why? Because in a world that's doubling down on a perverse addiction to suffering, we've never had so many incredible opportunities for change as we do today. All we need is the information and stimulus to change the direction of our lives. This week, we talked to Audrey & Chris Sarquilla, an extraordinary couple who work, play, and create together on the Bukit Peninsula of Bali. What do they do? They practice and share the worlds of Bhakti Yoga and the beautiful group singing practice of Kirtan, which involves a call & response interplay between leaders and group, all of whom chant and sign mantras alongside instruments, including the harmonium. And when they're not involved in these mystical practices, they surf. Bhakti yoga (Bhakti marga) is a Hindu spiritual path or practice that focuses specifically on loving devotion. Bhakti is one of the three classical paths in Hinduism that leads to Moksha (the transcendental state attained from being released from the cycle of rebirth). The other paths are Jnana Yoga and Karma Yoga. The Sanskrit word bhakti (भक्ति) comes from the root bhaj, translated as "to adore or worship God." Bhakti Yoga has been called "love for love's sake" and "union through love and devotion." Like any other form of Yoga, Bhakti is a path to self-realisation, towards experiencing oneness with everything. How does that sound on a scale of one to happy?! One does not need to be interested in Yoga to follow this episode, as the conversation's interweaving threads are about love and devotion. I wonder: what inspires us to the levels of devotion these days? Is it work? Our family? Our partners? And in this age where time, attention, and energy are such highly sought-after commodities, how many of us practice devotion toward ourselves? Audrey said of devotion, "Devotion strikes a place deep in my heart. It can start with a thought and then become a feeling. Most of the time, it comes from a sense of awe in my daily life. Devotion is also a practice - of sitting in love and gratitude for all that I have in my life." Jules first introduced me to Kirtan at the Yoga Barn in Bali's central town of Ubud. It's safe to say that I was hooked from the very first session. Since then, we've attended many sessions hosted by Audrey & Chris. The sense of freedom, connection, and joy we experience as a group does take some beating. It's like a high vibrational musical meditation, where families and individuals come together to sing, dance, and just be—free from judgment. After listening to the interview, find out more about Bhakti and Kirtan. We were also blessed to have Audrey & Chris play a couple of songs. You can find some of their music on Spotify. Enjoy. Welcome to Episode #34 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Carlos Romero onto the show. He is a yoga teacher from Venezuela and the founder of Livin' Inspired. He has been immersed in the journey of self-exploration over the last 20 years, and is the founder of Livin' Inspired. Carlos is the kind of a yoga teacher who artfully curates every moment of the mind-body-spirit journey, leaving just enough space for silence. He has taught yoga all over the world, and has been based in Bali for the last 12 years. He's been teaching at Yoga Barn for many years. My conversation with Carlos Romero, a yoga teacher from Venezuela was so illuminative as we took a deep dive into the synchronicity and transformation that has occurred on Carlos' path of yoga. Carlos defined yoga as intimacy— as moving closer to ourselves and experiencing union and connection with own lungs, our own hearts, our own selves. I hope that this conversation made you want to turn a little closer towards yourself. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about magnificent rituals and raising consciousness through collective movement then this is the conversation for you. What to expect in the Yoga In Venezuela episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast At 16 years old, Carlos Romero took Indra Devi's book on yoga and did self-practice and self-study in the mountains in Caracas. At university he studied pharmaceutical science, though he felt an intense duality— that his heart was calling for a path of yoga, but given his age, his parents were strongly pushing him towards a university education in Venezuela. Then he started doing donation yoga classes with his fellow classmates at University. After he graduated and began working in a pharmacy, he was still teaching yoga classes after work and he felt a bit like “superman,” with taking off his lab coat and donning his yoga pants and flip-flops. He soon realized his real path was the path of yoga, that was what he was meant to do and how he was meant to serve. When an opportunity came up to move to Costa Rica and teach yoga, and then later in Bali— where he has been living for Bali for the last 12 years teaching yoga and building his yoga company, Livin' Inspired. Carlos is a well of knowledge about the many branches of holistic healing. His desire to help raising consciousness through collective movement, and to help people create a vibrant and authentic lifestyle is at the center of all his actions and endeavors. Curious? Tune into the Yoga in Venezuela episode to learn more and bask in Carlos' wisdom. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Venezuela episode? Everyone has a pose (or position) that they struggle with... and we blame it on our tight hips! Most of us feel like our hips are tight. But the reality is there are several factors that affect our hip flexibility. Some of these factors we can influence/change/adjust... while others... we can't do anything about. "I'm so burnt out. I've completed exhausted myself." Why is this conversation so common in the yoga community? How do we fill ourselves up? How can we sustain our work? If you're teaching 15 classes a week (which is a lot), then that's probably around 20 hours per week. Most full time jobs are 40 hours per week. So if you really think about it, are we just that lazy where 20 hours per week is too much work? Or is the work exhausting? And what is it ABOUT the work that is exhausting? Is there a way to shift or change things that so that it's not exhausting and the work can actually fill you up? - - - In this episode, Byron shares his wisdom around the topic of avoiding burnout as he experienced it during his 2nd year of working as a Yoga Teacher. There are many lessons to be learned from this episode regardless of your profession. When applied, these lessons can energize you and dramatically change your life. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Who HASN'T had issues with their shoulders? The thing that isn't common is what causes most issues in the shoulder. While most of us are not "anatomists", you don't need to be in order to understand some of the basics. Knowing the basics can save your shoulders in the long run. Here are a few of the facts that Michael covers in this episode: Shoulder muscles are smaller than most muscles in the body, and therefore fatigue easily. (Like when holding Warrior I or II for a long period) Over 90% of shoulder injuries are muscle-related. Most shoulder problems occur because of a lack of warm-up in preparation for a demanding task (or pose). More importantly, through this audio-interactive episode, you'll learn: How your shoulder works; and how to effectively cue movements near the shoulder to achieve a safe alignment that will feel good in your body and your student's bodies. - - - In this episode, Michael breaks down the anatomy of the shoulder in a way that allows you to create a sense of awareness of what's happening when you move. Yoga Teachers don't drink, swear, eat meat, or make mistakes. Ha! That was hard enough to type let alone accept as truth. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that are put on Yoga Teachers. It's true that as Yoga Teachers, we have a responsibility to help heal the world and inspire health and wellness through the practice, but not in such a way that doesn't align with your wants, needs, or desires. There's also the idea that once you become a Yoga Teacher you 'should' automatically know how to fix people's injuries or limitations. That's a hard one to get over for a lot of new teachers, and I'm happy to say that I (Michael) break that one down to the point where you can sleep better at night knowing what your TRUE responsibilities are as a Yoga Teacher. - - - In this episode, Paul and Michael discuss the unrealistic expectations that the general population puts on Yoga Teachers. To be a certain way. To eat a certain way. To have a certain "energy" about them. While some of these traits may be true for some, they are not absolutes. This episode is all about deconstructing and debunking the many unrealistic expectations and turning them into after-thoughts. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Our knees are under-appreciated in life. We typically don't think too much about them until they become a problem. Depending on what your life has looked like, or what kind of activity you've gotten into throughout your life, you may have knees that are feeling older than you are! Or maybe that's just me (Michael)! Either way, the knees are super important and require a lot of TLC to make sure they can continue to carry us around this beautiful world. When it comes to yoga practice, our knees can be easily ignored and overlooked, resulting in a gradual breakdown of stability and structure. Nobody wants that. With a little self-awareness and a sprinkle of anatomy knowledge, you can make a major impact in the progression of life for your knees and for those of the students that attend your classes. - - - In this episode, Michael breaks down the essential “need-to-knows” about protecting the knees during yoga practice and how we as teachers can help to facilitate that injury prevention through simple guidance of cues, reminders, and encouragement. And how WE can make big difference in the happiness, or peace, we feel - And to those that warrant a reaction/response. Reacting usually means our emotions quickly decide our next move. For example, getting frustrated, annoyed, and upset when others do something that triggers you. However, responding means that I step back from those emotions and look at the whole picture for a "minute". Asking myself: "What are possible reasons for this to be happening?" "How can I do something differently to change the outcome?" That "minute" allows time to realize that maybe "I need to be more clear in MY communication so that others know what my expectations are, so I don't get frustrated, annoyed and upset. Ahhh yes.... that seems like the wiser choice! Wisdom is a balance of emotional mind and logical mind. Acting from emotions is a "reaction"

“How much can I feel?”  When we experience trauma, whether shock trauma (too much too fast) or developmental trauma (too little too long), it is common to disassociate. The healing process begins with reconnecting to the body and courageously experiencing all that we reject and hold inside. Tina Nance, a yin yoga and yoga therapy teacher in Bali, is a true master of the art of cultivating interoception (the internal felt sense of the body) and meeting her edge with mindfulness and compassion. Two years ago I trained as a yin yoga teacher with Tina at Yoga Barn in Ubud and it is an honor to share her wisdom with you today.  Our wide-ranging conversation on healing trauma weaves through Tina’s journey and my own. We talk through attachment theory, PTSD, yin yoga, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and above all radical compassion. Along the way we explore yin and yang, a mystical perspective on menstruation, and a menagerie of wisdom teachers. Finally we rest with how personal healing leads to service and how we can work with trauma during a time of global isolation.  A student of Yin Yoga founder Sara Powers, Tina Nance has been teaching yoga and women's work globally since 2001. Tina’s current focus is embodied somatic trauma integration. She teaches in Ubud, Bali. They say you have to feel it to heal it, but with the right embodiment practices, the healing journey can be a sacred and joyful dance. The Downward Facing Spiritual Spiral

This week, I welcome Paul Teodo to The Spiritual Spiral Podcast. Paul is a freaking stud and a rad guy and someone I really look up to and admire. Why? Because not only is he a musician and an amazing yoga teacher, but about two years ago, he and his fiancé packed up and left Los Angeles and moved all the way to Bali to teach yoga. How freaking cool is that?  Paul was anointed the best yoga teacher in Los Angeles in Yoga Trip Magazine about two years ago so we talk about what it felt like to be considered the best yoga teacher in Los Angeles. Paul talks about music and being creative and what inspired him and his fiancé to leave LA and move to Bali. We also talk about social media and Instagram, we discuss his acting pursuits as well as what ultimately led him to step into a yoga class and eventually become a teacher. You can check Paul out at the Yoga Barn in Bali where he currently teaches or visit him on one of his retreats around the world. Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 236: In this podcast, Madelyn Moon discusses her healing journey from a strict black-and-white conservative Baptist upbringing to a more expansive connection to spirituality. Madelyn explains why she never felt accepted and connected to her religious roots and why she started to explore spirituality. She shares her thoughts on the Bible, Jesus, heaven/hell, daily confessions and so much more in this vulnerable episode. Show notes:  Religion is black and white. Spirituality is many colors. There was no clarity in religion so she was constantly exploring and asking questions. Madelyn believes that God created us all divinely and that this divine energy is pure love. Madelyn thinks the Universe wants everyone to feel closer than love and is not okay with hate. The Universe isn't black and white. The Universe is every color, every shape — it’s everything good. It’s pleasure. The divine is nothing but light and goodness. Her background with a strict Baptist upbringing and how everything always went back to God. Her obsession with confessing her sins and the anxiety that created. The immense fear that the idea of the Rapture created for her. How does nature not make it into religion? You are 110% in control of your life. You don’t need anyone’s permission to change your beliefs. The Yoga Barn in Bali is where she felt Spirit enter her being. “Seeing the world has wildly served me in my spiritual life.” The beef she had with Jesus and how a trip to Israel healed her issues. All people are flawed. All people are deep down in their core the same, and we are love. We are human beings craving connection and Jesus was all about that.

How she views the Bible as a metaphor of living her life. Her thoughts on heaven/hell and why she doesn’t believe in it.  Chandresh Bhardwaj Episode HERE "My real work on Earth is to be as conscious as possible; to be a light; to do the best I can on Earth and then who knows what happens." If you’re into yoga you probably know Bali is one of the top spots in the world to practice and its epicentre if there is one is Ubud. At the centre of that is the world-renowned Yoga Barn, a truly epic space that has become something of a mecca not just for yogis but all sorts of spiritual seekers looking to explore breathwork, dance and meditation When you first see it you can’t help be impressed but I know it all started with humble beginnings and one of the co-founder’s own hero’s journey from corporate world through yoga and into service. Charley Patton is one of three co-founders in The Yoga Barn and a real gem of a human being. He’s followed his truth and blazed an amazing path to create a wonderful oasis in Bali. His humility and wisdom is really inspiring. I caught up with to understand what it was that drove him to do it, how he has navigated the challenges over the years, and what you can do to make your dreams become a reality as well.

Live Different Podcast: Business | Travel | Health | Performance

Matt Wilson Iceland March 2012: Becoming a Digital Nomad “Velkomin á Íslandi” I heard as I pried my eyes open getting off the red eye flight. Beautiful blonde Icelandic women with farm working physiques bullied their way gracefully to the overhead compartment.    My mountain guide met me at the terminal.  “Hello I am Siggurdur Bjarni Svienson.” (spelling) he said with a long pause.  “But you can call me Siggi he said, with a slight sense of dry Icelandic humor.”   The sun was barely up.  A thick mist of dense clouds rolled in from the North Atlantic.  The ground was black, covered with sharp lava rock. Not a tree in sight. Where the fuck am I? I wondered. I started to feel bad that humans even attempted to live here. We wound our way down the Icelandic coastline to the capital city of Reykjavik where 230,000 of the 330,000 inhabitants of this bleak terrain decided to call home. Siggi dropped me at my hostel and said he’d return that evening. I was on my own.   Becoming a Digital Nomad  What was the first thing I did on my trip to Iceland that Sunday morning at 8 am?   Answered emails. I shit you not. I was addicted. This is incredibly embarrassing thinking back at it.  Do you know how many people in that inbox truly did not matter? At the time my Co-founder Jared O’Toole and I were running a successful media site for young entrepreneurs called Under30CEO.com.  It was near the peak of our traffic numbers, at over 500,000 unique visitors per month… we had boatloads of fans from India, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and of course all over the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK. God, we thought we were important. Note: if you want to see hilarious pictures of Jared and I on jumbotrons in Time Square, ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ, or being invited to yap about the importance of small business on Fox Business, take a look at the article announcing that Under30CEO was acquired.   How to Travel the World and Never Really Have a Chance to Enjoy It  Okay, I’m joking.  But not really. Everyone wants to be a digital nomad these days… but not so long ago, co-working spaces like WeWork were not a thing, hostels didn’t have conference rooms, and you could’ve actually found a seat at a coffee shop in Austin, Texas. The reality is, being a digital nomad is fucking awesome.  It’s why it seems that all the cool kids are doing it. And therein, lies the problem: the cool kids. Yup, I am sad to say I was one of them. Addicted to email.  Caffeine.  And worst of all, stress. The rest of this post is going to be devoted to strategies on…   How to break free from your desk, travel the world, and not stress yourself out I’ll be honest, when I hear someone describe themselves a “digital nomad” I usually cringe.  Call me a seasoned gringo, but the “cool kids club” is exactly why I packed up and left New York.  I’m not trying to hang out with a bunch of stressed out people talking about marketing, complaining about the wifi here in Costa Rica. If you really want to enjoy the “pura vida” as we say, you’ll first have to get a handle on your travel schedule.  The first rule of thumb is don’t overdo it. In upcoming posts, you’ll hear me talk about how stressed out I was my first time to Bali, traveling around the island until I found a Starbucks because I had to hit a deadline.  Backpacking and hitting deadlines really doesn’t work.  You shouldn’t try to travel South America while taking on new web design projects.  You need to find somewhere you like and develop a routine so you can be in a higher state of flow, complete you work, and then go have fun.   Choose your City As a general rule, cities have better wifi than rural locations.  This is bad news for me, as I prefer mountain hideaways and surf towns.  These places also have worse 3G and 4G cell service, which you’ll need as backup when the wifi goes down.  If you want some cities that are close to natural wonders, think Medellin, Colombia, or Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Nomad List is an incredible resource for comparing cost of living and intel on how good the wifi is.   Choose your Dwelling This for me is one of the most fun parts of living in places where the dollar goes far.  I’ve lived in $300/month local spots in Costa Rica to massive villas with a pool and security.  My current setup is a private four bedroom house in the jungle, and luckily for me, the lower level has a private entrance which I can Airbnb when I want.  During tourist season I can easily pay my rent with the money earned on Airbnb and when friends, family, or business associates come to visit, they have plenty of space.   Costa Rica is far from cheap however.  Friends who live in Thailand or Bali can afford places that are absolutely palatial.   I realize now that I’m making joining the digital nomad “cool kids club” sound a little too easy.  I want you to know that it’s often a pain in the ass to find places to live as a digital nomad.  Remember, in the developing world, a quick google search for “apartamentos Costa Rica” won’t help much.   Some quick tips: Find local expat groups like “Expatriates in Nicaragua” or “Gringos in Medellin” where there are often listings Make a local connection.  In Cusco, we found the Under30Experiences’ staff house through the brother of the owner of the hotel where we stay.  All the listings online where long term leases only. Ask around.  In Bali, Luz, my girlfriend and Under30Experiences’ Yoga Teacher, found an amazing place to stay right next to the Yoga Barn for just $20 night just by asking her driver. Avoid tourist areas, as people make more money on nightly rentals than they do renting their apartment per month.  Prices of monthly apartments in places like Barcelona become inflated.   Pay Attention to Quality of Life If your job is to work from a computer you need to think about how you can best get into flow state without the interruptions.  Remember-- you want to get your work done and then go explore, and get to know a place.  You won’t want to stay in a hostel for very long as they usually aren’t conducive to work.  There are exceptions like Selina’s across Panama, Colombia, and Costa Rica that offer built in co-working spaces. When I did a stint in Barcelona, I found a place with a kitchen, connected to a gym, down the street from a great grocery store, with great internet, and lots of cafe’s with wifi nearby just in case I needed a backup place to work.  These are the things that make me productive.   Other things that digital nomads’ love that are usually affordable and make them more productive include maid service, access to transportation and again, co-working. In Paris I lived a block from the metro and could walk to one of their Anti-cafe concepts where I paid by the hour for co-working.   Wifi The longer you stay in a place, the better you will understand where to get the best internet connection.  Here in Costa Rica, I struggled with the wifi for years until I got it figured out.  Once I discovered that I could have a 4G Personal Hotspot through my cell phone service with Movistar my life changed.  When the wifi is down, I simply put on my hotspot. Since I’ve been living here for a while, I know to immediately call a technician when the wifi is down.  It helps I’m fluent in Spanish now. Me trying to get the wifi working in French put me back down to tourist status.   I even have friends who have two internet service providers at their house in Costa Rica just in case one goes down.  Make friends with the wait staff at your favorite cafes so they will reset the router for you.  Select a workspace next door to a restaurant with good wifi.  The Under30Experiences Costa Rica Office always has a backup… thank you Sancho’s! When selecting a place to set up shop, check out Nomad List’s internet rankings before you go, and once you get to a place use Speedtest.net to see at how many MBPS you are working with.  For a general workday including Skype audio calls and podcast recordings 5-10 MBPS works fine for me.   Bring on the Fun At the end of the day it all comes down to designing the life you want.  I know it’s tempting to try to try and see the entire worldl, but you’ll need to get the backpacking and moving around out of your system until you are exhausted.  Then, go back to a place you really loved and spend more time there.  My initial strategy of traveling every five days was disastrous.  I worked Monday - Friday, packed up, and then traveled to my next destination over the weekend.  This led me to quick burnout as I describe in this throwback “Confessions of a 26 year old Entrepreneur.”   Finally, I went back to the place that had the most to offer me.  I wanted to learn Spanish, surf, practice yoga, and live in nature.  Select a place that’s right for you during this point in your life.  Realize that life on the road is lonely, so settling into a place will help you make connections and become part of a community.  I happen to love small town life, where I know everyone at my local bar.  Other people can’t stand it.   Choose what’s right for you and make sure you find yourself in a place where you can continue to learn and grow as a human. That’s the point of travel.

I interviewed Andrea at The International Yoga Festival in India where she was one of the speakers.   We spent 2 months in Bali and we're here to share what we did in Bali, where we went, and why we ended spending 2 months there. When we first planned our trip to Asia, we knew we wanted to go to Bali for at least a month! Amanda did her yoga teacher training there back in 2015 and loved it, and she was really excited to take Ryan back there and show him some of her favorite places on the island. We started our trip in Canggu, where Amanda did her yoga teacher training, and we spent our first few days hanging out on the coast, eating good food and practicing yoga before making our way to Ubud where we spent most of the rest of our 2 months. We really set up "life" in Ubud, purchasing memberships at Hubud Coworking space and at The Yoga Barn. Our days were spent eating great, healthy food, practicing yoga and working on some of our bigger projects at Hubud. We did take at least one day each week to explore though! We made a day trip to Seminyak, took a tour to some of the sights around Ubud, spent a day at The Bali Zoo through Voyagin, and took a day trip to Sanur. On this episode, we share why we loved Bali, what we did, and what our 2 months was like there. Enjoy! When I imagine a woman fully empowered in her voice, I think of Noelani Love.   I first met Noelani in Hawaii when dear friend Erica Jago and I led a workshop at her studio.  Since then I've watched Noelani come more and more into her voice as a mantra singer, teacher and retreat leader.  I've seen Noelani go for her dreams, speak up for her needs and stand for her beliefs.  When we reunited in Bali, Indonesia last May for the Rising Women Leaders Bali Retreat, I wasn't even surprised when she took the floor at Ecstatic Dance at the Yoga Barn to sing the closing song with her ukulele.  I watched in amazement as she gathered over a hundred of us to sing along with her that day. On today's episode of the Rising Women Leaders Podcast, I asked Noelani if she would share about her experiences of finding her voice and how her unique experiences of motherhood and childbirth have shaped her into the woman she is today.
