«Una angustia lo corroe. Se siente, al igual que sus compañeros, responsable de las muertes, y piensa dejar de jugar el fútbol. Se refugia en la paz del campo, lejos del torbellino de la ciudad que le recuerda los horrores de esa tarde infausta de mayo... [y] piensa que no vale la pena jugar para que la gente se mate.»1 Así describe Efraín Rúa, en su libro El gol de la muerte, lo que sintió el defensa peruano Héctor Chumpitaz después de «la tragedia del Estadio Nacional de Lima» el 24 de mayo de 1964, día en que murieron más de 320 personas como resultado de un gol anulado al final del partido preolímpico entre Perú y Argentina. Antes del encuentro, Perú estaba ubicado en el segundo puesto junto a Brasil, confiado en que obtendría un resultado positivo ante Argentina. «Era un repunte logrado gracias al pundonor y a la calidad de algunos jugadores como... Chumpitaz, un cañetano que jugaba en el equipo de la Unidad Vecinal de Segunda División», comenta Rúa. Pero tras la tragedia, Héctor regresó al pueblo en que había nacido hacía sólo veintiún años, perturbado porque «el fútbol, ese deporte que convocaba a la familia, se había vestido de muerte y no valía la pena jugarlo. Sólo un dirigente amigo lo convencería de lo contrario.»2 Gracias a aquel repunte en su estado anímico, debutó ese mismo año en la primera división con el equipo Deportivo Municipal, sobresalió durante casi diez años en el Club Universitario de Deportes (donde ganó cinco campeonatos nacionales y fue subcampeón de la Copa Libertadores de 1972), y obtuvo otros tres títulos nacionales con el club Sporting Cristal. Y, gracias a Dios, volvió a representar a su país no sólo como integrante sino como capitán de la Selección Nacional, con la que disputó 105 partidos, se destacó en dos Copas Mundiales (México 1970 y Argentina 1978) y ganó la Copa América de 1975. En el Mundial de México marcó uno de los goles en la famosa remontada del marcador contra Bulgaria. Apodado «el Granítico» y «Chumpi», en 1973 se ganó también el apodo de «Capitán de América» por haber sido electo capitán del seleccionado de América que jugó un partido amistoso contra las estrellas de Europa. La selección de Europa iba ganando 4-3 cuando, faltando 10 minutos, Chumpitaz anotó el gol del empate y forzó el lanzamiento de penales por los que la selección de América se impuso por 7-6.3 Después de todo, para aquel ídolo del fútbol peruano sí valió la pena volver a jugarlo, aunque casi lo abandona a causa de la tragedia del Estadio Nacional. Quiera Dios que, cuando más desanimados nos sintamos nosotros a causa de las pruebas que tengamos que afrontar, tomemos a pecho estas palabras del profeta Azarías a Asa, rey de Judá, y a todo su pueblo: «El Señor estará con ustedes, si ustedes están con él. Contudo, há situações nas quais não se pode contar com sua proteção e bênção. Leitura bíblica: 2 Crônicas 24.17-20.  Versículo - chave: Por que vocês desobedeceram aos mandamentos do SENHOR? Vocês não prosperarão. Já que abandonaram o SENHOR, ele os abandonará (2Cr 24.20b).

Enfrentando as mudanças no Mundo Daniel 1 [https://www.bible.com/bible/1608/DAN.1.1-21] 1No ano terceiro do reinado de Jeoaquim, rei de Judá, veio Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, a Jerusalém#2Rs 24.1; 2Cr 36.5-7 e a sitiou. 2O Senhor lhe entregou nas mãos a Jeoaquim, rei de Judá, e alguns dos utensílios da Casa de Deus; a estes, levou-os para a terra de Sinar,#2Rs 20.17-18; 24.10-16; 2Cr 36.10; Is 39.7-8 para a casa do seu deus, e os pôs na casa do tesouro do seu deus. 3Disse o rei a Aspenaz, chefe dos seus eunucos, que trouxesse alguns dos filhos de Israel, tanto da linhagem real como dos nobres, 4jovens sem nenhum defeito, de boa aparência, instruídos em toda a sabedoria, doutos em ciência, versados no conhecimento e que fossem competentes para assistirem no palácio do rei e lhes ensinasse a cultura e a língua dos caldeus. 5Determinou-lhes o rei a ração diária, das finas iguarias da mesa real e do vinho que ele bebia, e que assim fossem mantidos por três anos, ao cabo dos quais assistiriam diante do rei. 6Entre eles, se achavam, dos filhos de Judá, Daniel, Hananias, Misael e Azarias. 7O chefe dos eunucos lhes pôs outros nomes, a saber: a Daniel, o de Beltessazar; a Hananias, o de Sadraque; a Misael, o de Mesaque; e a Azarias, o de Abede-Nego. 8Resolveu Daniel, firmemente, não contaminar-se com as finas iguarias do rei, nem com o vinho que ele bebia; então, pediu ao chefe dos eunucos que lhe permitisse não contaminar-se. 9Ora, Deus concedeu a Daniel misericórdia e compreensão da parte do chefe dos eunucos. 10Disse o chefe dos eunucos a Daniel: Tenho medo do meu senhor, o rei, que determinou a vossa comida e a vossa bebida; por que, pois, veria ele o vosso rosto mais abatido do que o dos outros jovens da vossa idade? Assim, poríeis em perigo a minha cabeça para com o rei. 11Então, disse Daniel ao cozinheiro-chefe, a quem o chefe dos eunucos havia encarregado de cuidar de Daniel, Hananias, Misael e Azarias: 12Experimenta, peço-te, os teus servos dez dias; e que se nos deem legumes a comer e água a beber. 13Então, se veja diante de ti a nossa aparência e a dos jovens que comem das finas iguarias do rei; e, segundo vires, age com os teus servos. 14Ele atendeu e os experimentou dez dias. 15No fim dos dez dias, a sua aparência era melhor; estavam eles mais robustos do que todos os jovens que comiam das finas iguarias do rei. 16Com isto, o cozinheiro-chefe tirou deles as finas iguarias e o vinho que deviam beber e lhes dava legumes. 17Ora, a estes quatro jovens Deus deu o conhecimento e a inteligência em toda cultura e sabedoria; mas a Daniel deu inteligência de todas as visões e sonhos. 18Vencido o tempo determinado pelo rei para que os trouxessem, o chefe dos eunucos os trouxe à presença de Nabucodonosor. 19Então, o rei falou com eles; e, entre todos, não foram achados outros como Daniel, Hananias, Misael e Azarias; por isso, passaram a assistir diante do rei. 20Em toda matéria de sabedoria e de inteligência sobre que o rei lhes fez perguntas, os achou dez vezes mais doutos do que todos os magos e encantadores que havia em todo o seu reino. 21Daniel continuou até ao primeiro ano do rei Ciro.
