Hey, y'all! Today, I'm joined by my shadows. They're often in the peanut gallery, or even behind the camera(s), but they're front and center with me for this episode! Meet Lolo and Zozo, two of my daughters here in Beijing. They talk a little bit about themselves and how they navigate the city as students, and then we get into the dialect and accent challenge. Admittedly, I get passionate at one or two points during the episode, but it's all in love, and they still love me back, thankfully. Lolo hails from Antigua and Barbuda in the West Indies, while Zozo comes to us from Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe in Africa. We find that while we're from two different parts of the world, our speech is still strongly linked to each other in some ways. Hit it!Ok, we have officially started the show, so let's get into it.Like I mentioned, each of these clips features a well-known actor or actress putting on a specific accent from a different part of the world. All speaking English of course. What's interesting is that none of these actors actually speak like this in real life. They are imitating different accents from around the world. I thought this would be a cool way to do it, because often times when we imitate or put on accents, we choose the most recognizable, the most characteristic parts of the accent to make it credible. Some of these are supposed to be really good and some are just ok. I'll tell you a little bit about each one after I reveal the answers. If you know what movie each clip is from, I'm sure it will be easier for you to guess correctly. Extra points I guess if you can guess the movie as well.So, let's start. I have 8 different clips, and I'm going to play each one twice and then give you a second to write down where you think the accent is from. I suggest that you write down each guess on a piece of paper, or open the notes app on your phone, in order to keep track of your answers. Some of these are easier than others so don't get demoralized, don't get discouraged if you have a hard time. Distinguishing accents can be pretty tricky. Ok. Here we go.
