New Month, New Series! In the STEM Career Paths Series, we will provide insight into various STEM career paths. Too often, people don't realize the large amount of career opportunities available in STEM. Sometimes these careers aren't brought to our attention as a person of color, which can lead to missed opportunities and money for us. This week we will cover the career as an Actuary. Actuaries help companies assess and plan for financial risks. Did you know this profession tops the list as the least stressful job with an average salary of over $100,000? Although there are many opportunities in this field, it does not have the diversity that it needs or desires. Our special guest, Jamala Arland, is working to flip the script on underrepresentation in the STEM field, particularly in the often-overlooked profession of an Actuary. Jamala has over 16 years of experience working as an Actuary. She is the Senior Vice President of Long-Term Care Inforce at Genworth Financial. She is also former Chairperson of the Society of Actuaries (SOA)'s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. Tune in as Jamala shares her journey of being one of 250 black actuaries in the United States, obstacles people of color face, and the SOA's commitment to building equitable opportunities for all members and candidates to enter, develop, grow and succeed in the actuarial profession. With two special guests from the Society of Actuaries (SOA), the new episode of the Let's Talk STEM with Dr. Calvin Mackie podcast highlights the important role that actuaries and mathematics play in American society and the dire need to increase the number of Blacks in a profession that is a mystery to many people. Joe Wurzburger, SOA Managing Director in Strategy and Innovation, and Jamala Arland, a former Chair of the SOA's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, explain how to become actuaries and their impact. Both are SOA Fellows, the highest designation earned through exams, training and other requirements. Arland acknowledges their diversity challenge: there are less than 250 Black actuaries around the world. Arland discusses SOA's efforts to help members and candidates feel fully included and have equitable opportunities.  She also cites the rewarding experiences she enjoyed in the insurance industry. “I worked at insurance companies for the majority of my career,” she says.  “I've done a lot of really cool things. I've done things related to developing cool new, innovative insurance products. I've done things related to analysis of stock market increases. I've done analysis related to the impact of pandemics even before we were in the middle of a global pandemic.” Wurzburger adds: “There is no one size fits all actuary, right? There are so many different kinds. Actuaries are business professionals who make or influence decisions affected by risk. The cool thing within that is for people who want to use math as a foundation to make a social impact. Those decisions often safeguard things in society that people value most.” The Let's Talk STEM with Dr. Calvin Mackie podcast series features interviews with guests from all aspects of STEM – entrepreneurs, educators, corporate leaders, students – who talk about the importance of STEM in their lives today.

By Michael Tetreault, Editor-In-Chief, Concierge Medicine Today/The DPC Journal and Host, The DocPreneur Leadership Podcast The Society of Actuaries (SOA) commissioned Milliman to develop this report to provide health care stakeholders (patients, payers, policymakers and actuaries) with a comprehensive description of Direct Primary Care (DPC) as well as an objective actuarial evaluation of certain claims made about the DPC model of care. Today we sit down with one of the authors of the study, Fritz Busch, a consulting actuary at Milliman. Fritz's experience includes 27 years as an actuary and business leader in the insurance industry. Prior to starting at Milliman, he was with one of the larger Blue plans and had several consulting roles with McKinsey & Co. His commercial carrier experience includes a wide range of actuarial plan management functions that include reserving and annual statement work, trend analysis, commercial large group pricing, ACA individual and small group pricing, Medicare Supplement pricing, benefit plan design and product development. At Milliman, he has successfully worked with a variety of clients including regulators, insurance company executives, and others. He is a frequent speaker at industry and public policy meetings. Primary care is a vital and even foundational component of any health care system. Primary care physicians (PCPs) are the front line of health care and are often the entry point for patients needing care. How often a patient accesses primary care, and the quality of that care, can have significant impacts on downstream costs and patient health outcomes. However, while PCPs are almost universally acknowledged as essential to achieving the health care Triple Aim of providing high-quality care, at lower cost, with improved patient experience, many health care experts describe the current state of primary care as being in crisis. This crisis is characterized by physician burnout, large PCP patient panels, low pay for PCPs relative to other physician specialties, increased administrative burden, longer work hours without increased reimbursement, an increased risk of mental health conditions and suicide, and ultimately a PCP shortage relative to market demand.
