ADAM LEON is a critically acclaimed director and writer. He was born and raised in Manhattan and still proudly resides there. His three feature films, "Gimme the Loot" (2012), "Tramps" (2016), and "Italian Studies" (2022) all depict the various parts of New York where he grew up thus making the iconic city a character in and of itself that resonates distinctively in each film. "Italian Studies," his most recent film, stars Vanessa Kirby, Fred Hechinger, Maya Hawke, and features the music of Oscar nominated composter Nicholas Britell. Leon graduated from University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in African American Studies. He began his career as a production assistant and coordinator for some of the industry's most prestigious film festivals. Adam has now come full circle as a filmmaker whose cinematic contributions have received critical praise and recognition from many of the very same festivals where he got his start. He won the SXSW Grand Jury Award in 2012 for "Gimme the Loot" and in the same year was nominated for the Camera D'or award at The Cannes Film Festival where the movie premiered internationally. "Gimme the Loot" also received the Independent Spirit Award for "Someone to Watch" in 2013 and was nominated for Independent Spirit's "Best First Film" award. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/industry-standard-w-barry-katz/support

This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a Q&A with Italian Studies director Adam Leon, moderated by David Fear, Senior Editor and critic at Rolling Stone. From award-winning filmmaker Adam Leon, Italian Studies is a lyrical film about dislocation, connection, and the elusive nature of identity. While visiting New York City from her native London, writer Alina Reynolds, played by Academy Award®-nominee Vanessa Kirby, inexplicably loses her memory and suddenly becomes unmoored and adrift on the streets of Manhattan with no sense of time or place — or even her own name. As Alina's consciousness swings between imagined conversations, fragments of her own short stories and the bustling city around her, she finds an anchor in charismatic teenager Simon (Simon Brickner). Drawn to the lost woman, Simon soon introduces Alina to his free-spirited group of friends, and together they make their way through a disorienting cityscape full of life, beauty, and music. With an evocative score from Nicholas Britell, Italian Studies also stars Simon Brickner, Annika Wahlsten, Annabel Hoffman, Maya Hawke and Fred Hechinger. Italian Studies is now playing in theaters. This episode pays homage to the late Peter Bogdanovich by replaying our 2018 interview with him. Also, filmmaker Adam Leon with his film "Italian Studies", joined by actor Simon Brickner.
Host Christopher Funderburg is joined by his old friend Adam Leon to discuss Leon's new film Italian Studies. Starring Vanesse Kirby (The Queen, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Pieces of a Woman), the film follows an author who suffers a psychotic break and wanders Manhattan, joining up with a group of random teenagers in attempt to take ahold of herself and her identity once again. The discussion touches on Leon's sudden success with the SxSW-winning, Cannes-selected Gimme the Loot, the weird intersection of success and failure that came with his follow-up film Tramps, and the risks of making a film that you know will be divisive like Italian Studies. Leon talks about the process of working with an actress like Kirby on a somewhat experimental film, how he found the film's teenager actors, and why his film's titles are always awful. Front and center in the world of theatrical distribution is the Netflix issue. It felt like a topic that needed addressed right away since this distribution platform is robbing film fanatics of the Theatrical Experience. On this episode we discuss the need for a theatrical release so that a film can officially enter the public consciousnes. Without a theatrical release, great films like Tramps (dir. Adam Leon), Deirdra & Laney Rob a Train (dir. Sydney Freeland) and Win it All (dir. Joe Swanberg) are almost entirely missing from the "Best of 2017" conversations - even though they are available to millions of Netflix customers.
We return to the realm of Stephen King adaptations for a first-impressions review of the new IT, whose vision of 1980s childhood camaraderie and adventure shares a lot with STAND BY ME’s vision of 1950s childhood camaraderie and adventure — only with a really scary clown in the mix. We dig into how the two films reflect some of King’s favored tropes around bullies and adults, how they each handle their period settings, and whether or not they’re both “rite of passage” movies. Adam Leon made only one short before breaking onto the indie scene with his SXSW winning debut feature Gimme the Loot. With a budget around $60,000 the writer/director won the "Someone To Watch" award at the Film Independent Spirits and was able to get his film into almost every notable film festival on the market, including a run in the Un Certain Regard competition at Cannes. How did he pull it off? Hard work and humble beginnings. Leon's work ethic was noticed on set as a PA and as a result of his efforts, he found collaborators and producers that were eager to invest in his future. His latest film, Tramps, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last summer and was quickly scooped up by Netflix. It follows a young man and woman as they are unwittingly thrown into the middle of a money drop off gone awry. But for Leon, the real challenge came in crafting a genuine romance without leaning on cliche. To achieve this goal, he turned to his writing partner and producer Jamund Washington early on in the development process. Leon and Washington join us on this week's episode of The No Film School Podcast to talk filmmaking as a collaborative art form, the right way to take notes on your screenplay, and finding partners that won't compromise your vision but help to build upon it.
