Hi, Tom D'Antoni, as always, with another Coffeeshop Conversation from Artichoke Music. Coming up soon we'll have OMN's National Editor Art Levine with a conversation on UFO's and music, not that they have anything to do with each other. Also upcoming, Ticket Tomato's Amy Maxwell on the Live Nation controversy, Yvonne Lerch on booking the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival. A new episode every week. Today, Adam East is in the building. He's been at the Alberta Rose Theatre since it opened in 2010 and has helped build their reputation as one of Portland's best loved venues He's their talent buyer. You may also know him as a musician, which he still is.
Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas arrived in Portland November 13, a day before their scheduled concert at Alberta Rose Theatre. It was the last stop on their tour and they stopped for breakfast, then planned to see the sites of the city. But the day turned out much differently than the world-renowned Scottish fiddle player planned. They came out to find someone had broken into their car, parked at SW 10th and Taylor, and stole all their musical equipment and suitcases at some point between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.“Every single thing in the car was taken: Two suitcases, a cello and a massive flight case and my violin and a big bag of equipment,” Fraser told KOIN 6 News.“So at this point we are missing the violin, my treasured violin, all my microphone equipment and Natalie's suitcase,” Fraser said. “Most of my luggage and Natalie's suitcase is gone.”Fraser, 68, played that violin since he was 8. He knows nothing else.Support the show
I think this is the first time we've ever run two Coffeeshop Conversations in one week. It's because of the concerts both Ben Darwish and Jeremy Wilson are doing this week and weekend. Jeremy Wilson is, of course, known for his music. He was a member of the Dharma Bums and others. But he is also known and loved for starting the Jeremy Wilson Foundation which helps fund medical bills for musicians. There are several fund-raising musical events during the course of the year. One happens this weekend at the Alberta Rose Theatre. It's the Next Waltz during which a whole lot of our finest musicians sing and play all of the tunes from the movie, The Last Waltz which was the final concert by The Band. Let's catch up on the concert preparations, the work of the foundation and what's up with one of Oregon's favorite dudes, Jeremy Wilson.
During their very first meeting, musicians Lamiae Naki and Nat Hulskamp wrote their first song together and decided to get married. The resulting project was Seffarine, an eclectic ensemble that blends traditional Andalusian and Moroccan music with jazz and other contemporary influences. The band is based in Portland, but has performed and recorded throughout Europe, Africa and North America. Their most recent residency was in Morocco, just days after the devastating earthquake that leveled several remote villages in the Atlas Mountains. Naki and Hulskamp join us for an in-studio performance and a conversation about their wide-ranging influences, their travels and the band’s upcoming show at the Alberta Rose Theatre, which will benefit earthquake relief efforts in Morocco.
Thanks to Artichoke Music's Chairman of the Board and Artistic Director Paul Ward, we have two guests in the Artichoke Café today…and Paul is at the controls, along with a mic for himself. Our guests today are singers and songwriters Bre Greg and Colin Hogan who have a double album release coming up on Saturday, January 14 at the Alberta Rose Theatre. Bre's band Red Bird will be playing and The Colin Trio will also. Separately and together? That remains to be seen. They're both here in the Café and have come to talk about their new releases and their musical friendship. They both live in multiple genres which, in Oregon, is a necessity as well as a love. So for the first time on OMM's Coffeeshop Conversations…let's meet Bre and Colin.
It's the second installment of Why Did He Choose to talk with accordion players three episodes in a row. Last time it was Darka Dusty, next time it'll be Jety Swart aka Jet Black Pearl and this time it's our old friend Courtney von Drehle. Bela Balogh, his collaborator of a couple of decades in groups like Three Leg Torso was supposed to be here too but he had a gig tossed his way at the last minute. They're working on a new holiday show called The Elves of Frostländ - The Next Generation featuring film segments directed by Bela. It'll be at the Alberta Rose Theatre on December 17. Let's do some catching up with the ever clever Courtney von Drehle.

Technology impacts our sex lives in a lot of ways, and we don't just mean porn. Better access to education and intimacy is great! But maybe too many matches on Tinder isn't so great? Also, what's the deal with sex robots? In this episode Dr. Kris Gowen talks about many of the ways we use technology to connect with each other, and why it's so hard to get good data on the subject. Conserving and restoring forests can help fight climate change in two ways: cutting down forests is the second largest source of CO2 emissions (after fossil fuels), and because healthy forests can absorb and sequester massive amounts of carbon. Listen as Laurie Wayburn from the Pacific Forest Trust talks about how saving forests is good for humans and good for the planet. Humans naturally seek out novelty and new experiences, and for some people that can lead to drug addiction. Repeated exposure to drugs can create powerful, persistent memories, and these drug-related memories can lead to addictive behavior and relapse, even after years of sobriety. In this episode, neuroscientist Dr. Barbara Sorg talks about what happens in the brain when we have new experiences, evidence showing that drug addiction is a chronic brain disease, and how understanding the neuroscience of memories might help treat addiction. She also describes her own lab's work with using animal models of addiction to weaken memories associated with cocaine. Hi there. Tom D’Antoni back with another OMN Coffeeshop Conversations Mini episode, something we started a few weeks ago. You can count on one full and one mini episode per week. And did you know we’re also on iTunes, SoundCloud and TuneIn? We are. Just search for Oregon Music News to find every past and present Coffeeshop Conversation. Of course, that coffeeshop is World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan. Today we’re bringing back the Boogie Cat, Norman Sylvester who is going to tell us all about a show he’s got coming up at Alberta Rose Theatre which he calls the “Phenomenal Concert,” “The Journey of American Music.” “From Africa to the Mississippi Delta to the 21st Century. Alright then, let’s find out about it.
November 21, 2017 Welcome back to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan, home of OMN’s Coffeeshop Conversations. Today we’ve got Paul Brainard, a very recent inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. If there is a more versatile musician around here I haven’t met him. This weekend (November 25-27) he’s hearding the horn section of the band at the annual Next Waltz show at the Alberta Rose Theatre.. You may know him better as that steel guitarist who plays everything from Ernest Tubb to Led Zeppelin to Thelonious Monk on this instrument. He’s a native Portlander and has an awful lot to say about his music and his instruments. How did he react to his Oregon Music Hall of Fame honor? How did he get from being a horn player to fame as a steel guitarist?
April 24, 2017 Welcome back to another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation at our home for these things…World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan. Tony Furtado is here today. He is known world-wide as a stringed instrument player, especially the banjo and more often than not these days, as a singer/songwriter. He has a new album out, a live one called Cider House Sessions – Live at Reverend Nat’s and if you don’t know anything about that place, you will by the time we’re done. He’s got an album release on Saturday, May 6 at the Alberta Rose Theatre. Full details and tickets here. He’s married to Portland singer/songwriter Stephanie Schneiderman. Two musicians in the family? How does that work? Hear a track from the new album at the end of the conversation.
August 27, 2015 Welcome back to the coffeeshop, World Cup Coffee and Tea to be specific at northwest 18th and Glisan in Portland. Joining me today here in the cupping room is the owner of the Alberta Rose Theatre, Joe Cawley. The Alberta Rose has been an important part of Oregon’s music scene since Thursday, June 24, 2010 when he opened what had been a church, a couple of different movie theaters, but mostly had been abandoned for a long time before he bought it. Known for it’s Americana, Acoustic and Blues shows, it is also home to many of the Wanderlust Circus events. It’s a friendly place, very aware and a great part of the Alberta Arts district. Matter of fact, it’s turned out to be its anchor.
April 9 2015 Welcome to World Cup coffee and tea at 18th and Glisan to be specific. Time for another Oregon Music News Coffeeshop Conversation. This time we’ve got someone you may know better as Miz Kitty of Miz Kitty’s Parlour, the long-running vaudeville show, these days at Alberta Rose Theatre. But you might know her by her real name, Lisa Marsicek, a fiddler and player of other stringed instruments…from the Flat Mountain Girls and other bands she’s been in. It started as a goofy little vaudeville show at the Back Gate Stage at Artichoke Music in 2002 starring Lisa Marsicek as Miz Kitty, a naughty lady in a flamboyant costume a dance hall queen would have worn in the 1875. After moving to Mississippi Pizza and then to Imbibe, she took the plunge and brought Miz Kitty's Parlor to the Mission Theater. At the time it seemed risky. Then she started selling out the place.
April 30, 2015 With me today is Ron Blessinger, the Musical Director of the internationally known Third Angle New Music Ensemble. I first met him a long time ago when I wrote and produced a TV story on their production of several compositions by Steve Reich, which included a visit FROM Steve Reich to work with them. It was an experience neither one of us will ever forget. Ron and I, that is. Ron talks about TA's landmark concert on Friday, May 1, 7:30 at the Alberta Rose Theatre as the ensemble teams up with The New Yorker’s Alex Ross, author of the bestselling 20th-century music history The Rest is Noise. Ross will read the story of the West Coast avant-garde, complemented by Third Angle’s performance of works by Harry Partch, Henry Cowell, Lou Harrison, and 2014 Pulitzer Prize winner John Luther Adams. Ron is also a long-time violinist with the Oregon Symphony. He had fought traffic to get to World Cup.
Interviews and documentaries about Nonprofit Organizations in Portland Oregon
Today we’ll hear from Robyn Tenenbaum, executive producer of Live Wire Radio. Live Wire is a nationally-broadcast live show based here in Portland and recorded both locally at the Alberta Rose Theatre as well as in venues across the country. Robyn talked with our host, Phil Busse, about the show’s evolution and why arts matter in the nonprofit world. Northwest native Luke Burbank hosts Live Wire Radio as well as producing his own regular podcast and being a frequent guest on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. His personality and sense of humour come through on the show frequently through his retelling of personal stories.
This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! From the Archives: 1. Back from the dead. Or the nearly dead. Or at least the severely Laryngytised. Is that a thing? Anyway, my throat and voicebox were down for the count with a nasty virus. Still playing a little hurt, but I’m ready to muscle through with Epi62 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast! We’re diving heavy into clips this episode. Some new shows. Some old favorites. Got a new Henderson’s Pants ad. Have an unprecedented TRIPLE shot of Burst O’ Durst because we got so far behind. And we actually had someone FINALLY click the Donate button on the http://SuccotashShow.com website! (It’s been over a year since anyone’s touched it but it’s happened and I reveal who it was AND give the person a big ol’ wet sloppy thank you in the TweetSack segment this episode. (Oh, what the heck, I'm going to spoiler alert it right here and thank Geoffrey Welchman, our buddy over at the Inverse Delirium podcast for his generous clicking of the Succotash Donate button!) THE 10 MOST ACTIVE IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST Even though I was out for a bit, those active podcasts kept marching up and down the list over at Stitcher. Here's how this week's MOST active shows shook out: 39. My Brother, My Brother & Me +3151. The Naughty Show +2063. Too Beautiful to Live with Luke Burbank -2369. The Dead Authors Podcast +4182. Cashing In With TJ Miller -2184. Rollin’ with Dice & Wheels -3785. Tom Rhodes Radio +28391. This Week In Blackness Radio -2497. The New York City Crime Report with Pat Dixon +1899. Answer Me This -24 BOGANWOOD Friend-of-Succotash Jabs over at the DHead Factor put together an interesting "mini-series" of a podcast a few months ago. The show, done narrator or storyteller style by Jabs, chronicles the misadventures of a bunch of low-rent Aussies who live in Boganwood, "Canberra, Australia's forgotten suburb". Delivered in eight episodes, it's an ambitious little project that demonstrates the ability for practically anyone living anywhere to produce inventive entertainment via podcasting. For the next 8 episodes of Succotash, I'm going to feature the Boganwood episodes of Season 1, and we'll also have some conversations with Jabs about the series - where he got the idea, how he executed it, and how plans are coming along for Season 2. We kick off this mini-featurette with Episode 1 in this edition of Succotash. THE CLIPS Tom Rhodes RadioTom Rhodes is one of those veteran standup comedians who has traveled the world, literally, performing and sometimes NOT performing comedy. At one point he had made the San Francisco scene his hang, but since then he’s been around quite a few comedy scenes. Podcasting is the latest scene and he’s been quietly dropping episodes since 2011. This week Tom Rhodes Radio makes a mighty leap up 283 places to get into the Stitcher’s Comedy Top 100. He interviews guest Andy Kindler (who visited us during Succotash Epi55.) SModcast/FEaB After watching this show ricochet around in the Stitcher Top 100 for the past few weeks, I finally listened to enough of it to find out that FEaB stands for Four Eyes And Beard, which are indicative of the two hosts – Matt Myra, who is also part of The Nerdist with Chris Hardwick, and Scott Mosier, who partners with Kevin Smith on the original Smodcast. (I’m not sure, but I think the Smodcast Network is slowly taking over all of podcasting. They’re like the Borg of the internet.) Live Wire! Radio With Luke Burbank, Courtenay Hameister, Sean McGrath, Patricia Ferguson, Live Wire! Radio is a audio variety show recorded in front of an enthusiastic live audience from the Alberta Rose Theatre in Portland. They've got music, conversation, and sketch comedy. It's "radio variety for the A.D.D. generation", as they say on their homesite. Guests this episode include Jen Kirkman, Dan Savage, and The Builders & The Butchers. But our clip is one of their home-brewed sketches about a somewhat different genie… Pablo Francisco: Anything GoesComedian Pablo Francisco has joined up with the ever-growing Sideshow Network to enter the rolls of comics-with-podcasts. In the clippage we share, he takes a look at someone with a lot of fame and fortune that also recently revealed that he’s spent millions on blow. About Last Night Adam Ray and Brad Williams are 55 episodes into this podcast and going strong. Both are comedians, and both are irreverent. Adam Ray’s in that new movie The Heat that just opened, and their guest this episode is pop culture TV host Michael Ho, who also got to interview President Obama after the last election’s disastrous first debate. (I also reviewed this show on last week's This Week In Comedy Podcasts on Splitsider.com - check it out!) Proudly ResentsThis is Adam Spiegleman’s podcast where he and assorted friends like to take movie apart at the seams. Sometime old movies. Sometimes new movies. And, in the case of one recent episode, kids movies. Specifically, Adam invites a friend over with her kids to talk about what they thought of TWO kids movies – A Talking Cat? and Tommy & The Cool Mule. Kids make great reviewers because they pretty much always tell the truth…when you can get them to talk. Air-Raid PodcastWe’ve featured some clippage from the Air-Raid podcast out of Seattle before, with host Aaron Roden, and it’s often more hot new music rather than comedy. But Aaron does pull down some nice chatter, including recently when he took his mics to The Sasquatch Music Festival at the Gorge in Washington State. He ran across comedian Mike Birbiglia, who was performing at the festival, and sliced off a little interview, with a cell phone cameo appearance by You Made It Weird host Pete Holmes. Rutledge Radio Hosted by comedian Gabriel Rutledge and his wife, stay-at-home-mom Kristi Rutledge, their Rutledge Radio hails from Olympia, Washington. In our clip Gabriel talks about the misery and false hope of the audition process. It's good to be back, and with so many clips! If you'd like to make sure we get to your show, you can always send us a 3-5 minutes MP3 clip to clips@SuccotashShow.com. or, if you just like what we're doing, jump on up to iTunes and gives us a healthy rating and maybe a short review. We'll be your bestest friend! Especially if you remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
