Alison was still in Paris having her Prairie Bitch adventures (with the infamous French mouse) during the recording of this episode, the weather is starting to warm up in NYC, and in exciting news, Dean announces he's writing a new book! (Yay!!!) Then, we discuss the episode where Alison even hates herself.  That's right, we're talking about “The Music Box”, from Season 3—where villainy is real, and cruelty reigns. We're talking “peak evil”. WHY, Nellie, WHY?! Alison explains why this episode was especially tough for her on a personal level (remember, Alison is really nice in real life!).  Katy Kurtzman, who plays the stuttering Anna, earns her stripes as a Little House GOAT of co-stars who joins the Vortex of Characters We Fall In Love With Whom We Never See Again. Pamela diagnoses Nellie as a certified psychopath, and gives a quick crash course on the difference between a sociopath vs. psychopath. (She cracked the Nellie code!) It's Laura's birthday in this episode (what month is it? Who cares—Walnut Grove is in eternal spring/summer!) and a failed birthday present leads to a passionate robbery. Sort of. We've got ridiculous nightmare sequences, bad fake fiddle playing, and Mary's big-sister energy on overdrive. (Hint: don't mess with her beauty sleep!). And in the end, did Nels use the strap? You decide. The moral of this episode: Don't get your kid a dictionary for their birthday. Season 3 cranked Nellie's sadism to a whole new level—and we had a blast recapping this one! Then join Pamela, Dean, and Alison over on Patreon where Alison and Dean and Pamela talk about things we cannot air on the podcast...Don't forget to subscribe, comment, leave a review, and share this episode with fellow Bonnetheads.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? On this week's motivation monday, I'm talking to Alison Arngrim.  New York Times Best Selling author of Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series Little House On The Prairie, and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Arngrim performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all-French version titled: Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie and La Malle aux Tresors de Nellie Oleson. As a stand-up comedian, Arngrim has headlined at nightclubs such as the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los Angeles; as well as the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York and assorted comedy venues across the United States and Canada. She is currently starring in two comedy series pilots: Life Interrupted, as the ex-wife of commercial child star Mason Reese, with Erin Murphy, (“Bewitched”) as her new wife and Dawn Wells, (“Gilligan's Island), as her mother, as well as, C.P.R. – Child Performers Resurrection Talent Agency, as an ex-child star gone wrong, trying to save herself and her assorted misfit cohorts by opening a talent agency. Arngrim has mocked her status as an “ex-child star” on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, during their month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor” and continues to be a frequent interview subject on everything from A&E, “E! Entertainment, TV Land and VH-1, to CNN and the Travel Channel. The TV Land network honored her undying image as TV's worst bitch, by declaring her the winner of their 2006 award for, “Character Most Desperately In Need Of A Time Out.” She starred in the heartwarming, gay, Christmas cult classic, Make the Yuletide Gay, as the overbearing “Heather Mancuso.” Her other television and film appearances include, Livin' the Dream, Tinder & Grinder, The Bilderberg Club, For the Love of May with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal, and The Last Place On Earth with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis Diller. In 2007, she began her foray into French cinema with the role of “Edith” in the French detective comedy, Jean Pierre Mocky's Le Deal. Her stage work includes, The Vagina Monologs, Sirena: Queen of the Tango, Dear Brutus, The Wool Gatherer, the French bedroom farce, In One Bed And Out The Other, Michael Kearns' AIDS/US II, “Rita” in the 2005 GLAAD Award nominated production of Last Summer At Bluefish Cove, the somewhat off kilter “Reverend Pat Miass” in Joni and Gina's Wedding, and the Ovation Award Nominated musical-drama, Flirting with Morty, as the abusive, trashy and tragic Ray Lee. In her spare time, she takes tourists on the rollicking comedy outing, Nasty Nellie's Tour of Hollywood, (featured at Dearly Departed Tours), where she simultaneously enlightens and amuses passengers with behind the scenes tales from both Hollywood history and her own life.   Offstage, Arngrim has been a dedicated and compassionate AIDS activist for nearly three decades, volunteering for AIDS Project Los Angeles and Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. In addition, Arngrim currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children, or PROTECT.org, fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse.

Find out how being bullied in real life lent itself to her channeling the nastiness of Nellie Oleson, and how her "prairie drag" helped to transform her into the role. The immediate connection felt between Alison and Melissa Gilbert allowed them to achieve one of the all-time greatest TV rivalries and how the enjoyment of the kill is comparable to Alison's hero, Hannibal Lecter! Alison's experience of being the most hated person to one of the most beloved people is nothing short of amazing, as is Alison's embracing of the character and her place in TV history--and all of our hearts--as our favorite Prairie Bitch. As Alison so perfectly says it: "BEAUTY IS FLEETING--VILLAINY IS FOREVER" Then join us on Patreon for another fun segment! Dean Butler is an actor, producer, and director best known for his role as Almanzo Wilder (the man Laura Ingalls married) in Little House on the Prairie, based on the beloved Little House book series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. He appeared in the final four seasons of the show, the spin-off show Little House: A New Beginning, and the three post-series TV movies. He was also a producer for NBC Golf's Emmy-nominated series Feherty for over ten seasons. "The idea of being a cowboy and riding horses began for me at our family ranch in northern California," Dean Butler says. "In this picture, I'm holding our horse, Cricket, with my sister Meg in the saddle. Those beautiful summer days in the country with my family all around me shaped my entire life and prepared me for what was to come in the years ahead." Now, on the occasion of Little House on the Prairie's 50th Anniversary in 2024, he's sharing the details of his young life as an aspiring cowboy and what he learned from Michael Landon in touching a new memoir. READ Check out Prairie Man from the library! ABOUT THE AUTHOR & INTERVIEWER Cast just before his twenty-third birthday, Dean Butler joined Little House on the Prairie halfway through its run, gaining instant celebrity and fans' enduring affection. Ironically, when the late, great Michael Landon remarked that Little House would outlive everyone involved in making it, Butler deemed it unlikely. Yet for four decades and counting, Butler has been defined in the public eye as Almanzo Wilder—a role he views as the great gift of his life. Interviewer Devan Stuart Lesley is a longtime journalist and owner of Legacy Talent Group, representing actors and models throughout the Southeast. Her expansive media career experience includes print, radio, and TV journalism; commercial, news, documentary, and independent film producing; assistant directing; acting; and voice-over. She is a freelance correspondent for People magazine and founder of Stuart Media, LLC specializing in corporate media. As a volunteer, Lesley is co-founder and past President of the Norman Studios Silent Film Museum, a 501c3 nonprofit organization working to restore and reopen Jacksonville's sole remaining silent film studio complex, where some of the nation's first African American-cast films were produced. She also is a member of the Jacksonville Mayor's Commission on Motion Picture, Television, and Commercial Production; Film Florida's Marketing & Communications Committee and Industry & Association Council; Women in Film and Television's Jacksonville, FL and New York chapters; and the Northeast Florida Press Club. Arngrim's father, Thor Arngrim, was a Canadian-born Hollywood manager. Her mother, Norma MacMillan of Vancouver, British Columbia, was an actress who provided the voices for characters as Casper on Casper the Friendly Ghost, as Gumby on Gumby, as Davey on Davey and Goliath, and Sweet Polly Purebred on Underdog, as well as other animated children's programs. After beginning a career as a child model and actress in television commercials, Arngrim rose to fame as a child star in 1974, portraying the role of Nellie Oleson on the NBC television series Little House on the Prairie. She originally auditioned for the role of Laura Ingalls and, later, Mary Ingalls, but was instead cast in the role of antagonist Nellie Oleson. Arngrim would play the role of Nellie for seven seasons and her portrayal became a cultural reference and camp archetype for the spoiled "bad girl" throughout the 1970s.[citation needed] Years later, in one of her stand-up routines, Arngrim described playing Nellie on Little House on The Prairie as "like having PMS for seven years." in 2002, she was honored by the Young Artist Foundation with its Former Child Star "Lifetime Achievement" Award for her work as a child actress on Little House. At the 2006 TV Land Awards, Arngrim tied with Danielle Spencer ('Dee' on What's Happening!!) as the "Character Most in Need of a Time-out" for her role as Nellie.

An iconic TV character is immortal. That truth has become increasingly official in today's digital age where every episode is but a click away. And as Alison Arngrim has well learned, if you played the villain, folks are still pissed. Alison's portrayal of frontier hellion Nellie Oleson struck such a resonate chord with fans that Alison has learned to embrace the Nellie energy and use it for good. Her book is called, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated.Raised in a bohemian show-biz family, Alison has been acting since early childhood. Her role as Nellie allowed her to vent the anger she carried due to suffering repeated sexual abuse at the hands of her brother. The power of Nellie gave her a voice to testify before the California State Senate and help create new law that criminalizes incest.Nellie also provided Alison with a platform to advocate for AIDS research, education and outreach when her TV husband and beloved friend Steve Tracy died of the disease. Her traumatic childhood caught up with her after the wonderful distraction of Little House was over and with a compass that points to “Happy,” she walked into a therapist's office at the age of 21 and said, “Here's what happened to me. Let's get to work.”Alison shares loads of backstage Little House stories and talks about her relationships, then and now, with her cast mates and she is definitely up for a round of LHOP Trivia!Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the Barack Obama series, Working: What We Do All Day, on Netflix and Shrinking on Apple +, and we shout out the new album on Band Camp from Media Path friend, Melanie, The Magic Bus.Path Points of Interest:Alison ArngrimConfessions of a Prairie Bitch by Alison ArngrimAlison Arngrim on WikipediaAlison Arngrim on TwitterAlison Arngrim on InstagramAlison Arngrim on FacebookLivin' on a PrairieShrinking - Apple +Working: What We Do All Day on NetflixThe Magic Bus by Melanie

Hello Backstory fans! In this great episode we welcome actress, author, and stand up comedian, Alison Arngrim, who played the somewhat mean spirited and snobbish "Nellie Oleson" on the popular tv show "Little House on the Prairie".  Alison chats with us about her time on the show of course, and what it was like to play a character that people loved to hate. She wrote a book about the subject, "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch" which was a New York Times Best Seller. Her one woman show of the same name has been performed around the US and Europe. She has also performed in plays, and has appeared in many movies over the years, and is a frequent guest on various tv shows often. Alison also talks about her deep roots in activism, having been involved in AIDS education and awareness, as well as child abuse prevention for many years. While the common perception of the character of "Nellie" is that of a mean girl, Alison is exactly the opposite. Her caring personality, her humor, and her willingness to talk about everything with openness and passion is proof of this. We hope you enjoy this chance to get to know Alison, and we know you will find this interview as enjoyable as we did.

E86 - We’re back to finish our fun interview with Alison Arngrim, the wonderful Nellie Oleson actress, turned stand-up comedian and New York Times best-selling author. She talks about real-life 'Little House on the Prairie' mean girl moments, on-set rumors, what Michael Landon was like, her ringlet HAIR!, and why she thinks Little House child actors grew up to stay on the straight and narrow. We talk about how Alison is the David Hasselhoff of France and the hilarious reason why French cultural differences work in her favor. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Alison performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all French version titled: Confessions d’une Garce de La Prairie. In 1986 when her friend and "Little House husband" co-star, Steve Tracy, passed away due to complications of HIV/AIDS, Alison began volunteering at AIDS Project Los Angeles. Her duties ranged from working on the Southern California AIDS Hotline and the APLA food bank, to chairing the steering committee of the volunteer speakers bureau and developing “Safer Sex” workshops. She has provided AIDS education to doctors, nurses, prison inmates, service clubs, churches, department stores and schools, written AIDS education articles for the magazines Frontiers and Designers West, and spent seven years hosting the APLA educational cable television show, AIDS Vision. In 1992, Joel Wachs presented Alison with a resolution by the Los Angeles City Council commending her on her work on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. From 1989 through 1993 she served as Program Manager at Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. From 1989 through 2003 she served as both hostess and producer for the comedy stage at the AIDS Project Los Angeles Annual Summer Party, where she helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for people living with HIV. She currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children (www.PROTECT.org), fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse. As an activist for the improvement of child protection laws, she has spoken before the California Senate and worked on legislative and political campaigns in several states, including Virginia and New York, in addition to PROTECT’s work on federal legislation in Washington, D.C. She takes pride in the fact that so many people enjoyed hating her as a girl and is more than happy to give them the opportunity to do so in the future.

Her name is Alison Arngrim, in case you didn't know, and oh how we loved to hate her as the golden locked evil Nellie on Little House On The Prairie. Well, if you have never heard an interview with her since her 70's heyday then you are in for a treat. She was truly one of our most honest interviewees EVER! Her edgy sense of humor is so fun especially when you remember the “innocence” of the show that made her famous. There's one story that I absolutely love which involves the Different Strokes kids…that's all I'll say…you have to listen. She has a one woman stand-up show called “Confessions Of A Prairie Bitch” which is hilarious. (Go to Youtube and check it out…too many to post here) So get your bonnets and lunch pails and lets head back in time to the days of Ma, Pa, Half-Pint and the “Prairie Bitch”. See ya there.

Alison proudly announces the release of the audio version of her memoirs "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch" Creator of one of America's most recognizable TV icons-Ms Alison Arngrim. Fans worldwide remember Alison as the hateful Nellie Oleson, the acid-tongued hellcat for seven years on TV's Little House on the Prairie. Arngrim has gone on to successes in many arenas, but Nellie has remained a centerpiece of her public acclaim. Alison says “Even now strangers sometimes shy away from me until they realize that I'm not going to hurt them.” At least, not when she's offstage. In Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, audiences can expect the unexpected and more than a little Nellie Oleson-style wickedness on this hilarious ride through the twisted heartland of America. Alison guest-starred on such television classics as The Love Boat and Fantasy Island, and lampooned her own status as “ex-child star” on the month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor,” on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.  She is an AIDS Activist for organizations like APLA, providing AIDS education to doctors, nurses, prison inmates, service clubs, churches and schools.  Alison stunned viewers of The Larry King Show in 2004 when she revealed her own history of childhood sexual abuse, becoming a advocate on legislature preventing child abuse by joining the advisory board of the National Association to Protect Children (PROTECT).

Alison Arngrim is best known as “Nellie Oleson” from "Little House On The Prairie” and has learned to love being hated. Her past is much darker, though. In addition to the pressures and baggage that comes with being a child star, she is a victim of incest and sexual abuse. Despite the trauma, she is one of the most loving and giving people we know, using her voice for good with causes that address AIDS, hunger, and child protection. Alison is also a comedian and an author. Her one woman show "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch" has now become a world-wide phenomenon and is also a book available on Amazon and Audible. Listen to how “Nasty Nellie” grew up to become an incredible powerhouse for good.

Alison Arngrim played Nellie Oleson for seven years on the hit show, Little House on the Prairie. She is often described as the "acid tongued hellcat" of the show, the small villain with golden ringlets and lovely clothing, and the arch-enemy of Laura Ingalls. Alison and I jumped on the phone for a little over an hour, and all I can say is that it was one of the most fast paced, hilarious, and engaging hours I've ever experienced. Alison shared a good deal about her book, "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch," and we spent time chatting about her childhood and landing the fabled role of Nellie Oleson. What really stood out in our time together is Alison's true appreciation and gratitude for the role that Nellie eventually played in her own life. As a shy child, a child that was being sexually and physically abused at home, playing Nellie instantly pushed Alison into a role that changed her, and made her more courageous. Since then, the role has given her a platform, allowed her to help charities that assist abused children and AIDS patients, and more recently, allowed her to start speaking about issues that women face in her lecture "More Than Just Surviving." I want thank Alison for her time - speaking with her was an inspiration. I know you're going to love this episode, and if you do, I encourage you to check out her book Confessions of a Prairie Bitch on Amazon. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it before she and I spoke. In this episode, Alison shares about: - making people laugh as a child - possibly "retiring" from acting at age 11 prior to getting the role of Nellie - her realization that the role of Nellie was very different than the other hyper-sweet children she often read for - the instant change of how people reacted to her in public after Little House on the Prairie first aired - why she thinks Little House on the Prairie is so popular throughout the world - Michael Landon, and how he created plot lines for the show - Melissa Gilbert is now running for Congress in Michigan - her amazing friendship with Melissa Gilbert - the best way to find a good date - how she met her husband Bob at the AIDS Project Los Angeles - the "Pocket Nellie" - leveraging fame and people's love of Nellie to help others - her upcoming line of scented candles and a ceramic pony - how to sign up for the Nellie Newsletter - her upcoming lectures with Petersen Productions - working with Girl Cave in Huntington Beach - a hint about her second book! Upcoming Events (as of 12/15/2015): - January 30, 2016 Prairie-Oke - Karoake - a one night event - March 19, 2016 Nite of Dreams Little House on the Prairie Tribute Dinner References Alison Arngrim's Bonnetheads.com website (sign up for the Nellie Newsletter here) Nite of Dreams website (sign up for the Tribute Dinner) The Girl Cave in Huntington Beach Alison Arngrim's Book, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch on Amazon I am an Amazon affiliate.
