https://youtu.be/QCAHgH8llEI?si=LWFFQBXnrUmhGDCX WELCOMEFollow along with us!Happy Palm Sunday. (Hosanna)We're really glad you're here…  Palm Sunday Jesus, Jerusalem, Donkey.  People shouted, “Hosanna.”OK TO SHOUT IN CHURCH! Celebration – Jesus is King! Collision – (crowd had plans for Jesus).  Struggle: Sunday school vs Real world SS – beauty/heavendidn't always learn disappointment.  Real: death/evil/devil/enemies If you were handed a “pretty Jesus” and a “pretty life,” disappointment can feel like betrayal. WHEN GOD DOESN'T DO IT THE WAY YOU WANTED AriaWe had plans, faith, belief Plans: home/family footprint, trips/holidays/ordinary days.  Faith assumption: “God is going to heal her.”  Prayed/believed/asked.  Outcome: brain tumor / she passed.  We had plans. We had belief. We had faith. Yet, it didn't go how we wanted. It doesn't just break your heart. It changes what hope feels like. Our story isn't the only story in the room. When God doesn't do it the way you wanted, you start concluding things. God doesn't care. God forgot me. God helps other people, but not me.It's probably me. I'm the problem. It's probably that I'm a sinner. It's probably that I'm not worthy. Disappointment doesn't just hurt – it redefines. It redefines… God, yourself, future. You had plans. You had belief. You had faith. And it still didn't turn out like you wanted it to. How does God address this in His Word?Let's look at it together on this Palm Sunday. PALM SUNDAY THROUGH THE LENS OF DISAPPOINTMENT 1) They wanted a King + they were desperate I want to read part of Luke 19. Luke 19:36-38 (NIV) As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road… the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices… ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!' They're not confused about what they want. They want a King. And they're shouting “Hosanna.” Hosanna is a pain word that means Save Us. It means: “Save us. Help us. Rescue us.” The tension: they didn't just want Jesus to save them. They wanted Him to save them their way. 2) They wanted saving their way. Under Rome: wanted overthrow, centurions cut down, Israel free, war + win.  They had plans… belief… faith. They assumed Jesus would execute their plan. 3) Jesus defines the kind of King He is How did Jesus arrive in this story? (Donkey) Don't overlook it!Reveals Jesus… fulfills prophecy. Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, Matthew 21:5 says Jesus came “gentle” riding on a donkey. Jesus is making a statement before He ever preaches a sermon. I am King. But I'm not the kind of King you can control. Do we want God's will to be done?Or do we want God to do our will? …God control my life?…God come under the control of my life? 4) Root problem vs visible problem They want Rome out. VISIBLE PROBLEM.Jesus is going to the root: sin, death, shame, and the powers underneath it all. ROOT PROBLEM. Empires cycle: Babylon → Persia → Greece → Rome. Remove one, another comes.  Jesus came to break the cycle at the source. But they had other plans. 5) Did Jesus not care? We think this sometimes… Luke 19:41 (NIV) As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it… Jesus wept. He isn't cold. He isn't detached. He sees what is, and He sees what's coming, and it moves Him. And Jesus says something else in Scripture that shows His heart: Matthew 23:37 (NIV)Jerusalem, Jerusalem… how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.  Jesus is saying… “I wanted it different.”“I longed for something else.”“I had plans, belief, faith. Yet, it didn't go how we wanted.” 6) Jesus knows disappointment. Palm Sunday gives you a King with tears.A Savior with compassion.A God who understands. What do we do with disappointment? What do you do when God doesn't do it the way you wanted? Practice 1) Talk to God honestly (like Jesus did) Garden prayer – Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” Can you trust God with that? Jesus, here's what I wanted. Here's what happened. Here's what I'm afraid to hope for again.Help me trust You anyway. Don't edit your prayer. Bring the real thing. The real hurt and disappointment…  Practice 2) Ask Jesus to reframe the story (before you finalize the conclusion) Name the default verdicts: I'm not worthy / I'm the problem / God is against me.  Disappointment isn't the whole story. Jesus, reframe my story.  Aria reframe: We wanted her home with us. Weeping on a walk in the park… phone call…  “God wanted her home too – and God brought her home.”  That doesn't erase grief. It changes the shape of the story.  Practice this prayer: “Jesus, show me what You see.”  Practice 3) Bring it into the light (don't do disappointment alone) Silence feels strong, but it usually isn't healing.  TALK TO SOMEONE! trusted friend, pastor, small group, counselor.  Resource: Patricia Muller podcast “Life Interrupted.” Grief grows in isolation.Hope grows in community. Imagine the kind of church we could become if we lived this. A place where disappointed people don't have to fake it. Where grief isn't treated like weakness. Where questions aren't treated like rebellion. Where we carry hope for each other until we can carry it again. A church where “Hosanna” isn't just a word we sing. It's a cry we can bring. It is ok to cry out… Jesus save me. Jesus save me……not how I want you to save me…save me how YOU want to save me. We had plans…belief…faith. And it still didn't go how we wanted. So here's what we're going to do – not later, not someday – right now. I have 3 responses for you… Respond to King Jesus. Respond to disappointment. Worship team is coming back. We're making a space for prayer. Here is how to respond… Step 1 – Talk to God honestly. Jesus, here's what I wanted. Here's what happened. Here's what I'm afraid to hope for again.Help me trust You anyway. Don't edit… get real. Step 2 – Don't do it alone. Pray.Talk.Counsel. Step 3 – Invite one person to Easter and pray for them. Name the person… Pray for them. MAKE THE DECISION – invite them.

Description:Today's guest, Suleika Jaouad, first captured our collective hearts with her searing memoir Between Two Kingdoms — a book that traced her diagnosis of leukemia, the brutal treatment that followed, and the long, complicated journey of coming home to herself again. It was a Jen Hatmaker Book Club selection back in March 2023, and it has stayed with so many of us. Suleika is an Emmy Award–winning journalist, bestselling author, speaker, and artist whose work asks some of the biggest questions humans ever face: What does it mean to live when life has been shattered? How do we hold hope and devastation at the same time? What does healing actually look like when recovery isn't linear, or even guaranteed? She is also the founder of The Isolation Journals, a global creative community of more than 100,000 writers, artists, and curious souls who use storytelling and imagination as tools for transformation. Her latest book, The Book of Alchemy, feels is a continuation of her journey — filled with essays, prompts, and reflections from over 100 contributors across disciplines. It's an invitation to explore how we turn pain into meaning, uncertainty into beauty, and our lives into art. Suleika speaks so generously about what it means to live in the middle — between diagnosis and remission, despair and joy, isolation and connection — and how storytelling helps us metabolize what we've lived through. Whether you're a writer, an artist, someone who's walking through your own valley, or simply trying to make sense of your story, this episode will speak to you.  Thought-provoking Quotes: There is no right or wrong way to journal. There are no rules. You don't have to be a good writer. I think it's why journaling appeals to me so much. – Suleika Jaouad I really try to make the journal a sacred space where I get to be my most unedited, most chaotic self. – Suleika Jaouad When I'm not trying to be efficient or productive is when I often end up having my best ideas because I'm not controlling, I'm not pushing, I'm not muscling my way through. – Suleika Jaouad When I stop making certainty or perfection the goal, it releases me from measuring myself against how far I am from that goal. And I get to be more present in what's happening now. – Suleika Jaouad Resources Mentioned in This Episode: American Symphony documentary on Netflix – https://www.netflix.com/title/81728930 The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life by Suleika Jaouad – https://amzn.to/3KPqWTD The Art of Survival | In living with cancer, Suleika Jaouad has learned to wrench meaning from our short time on Earth by Jennifer Senior | The Atlantic – https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2024/06/suleika-jaouad-writer-health-cancer/678210/?utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_content=edit-promo&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Suleika Jaouad – https://amzn.to/48KO9y5 The Isolations Journals on Substack – https://theisolationjournals.substack.com/ Jon Batiste – https://www.jonbatiste.com/ Piano for Super Bowl LIX 2025 – https://noma.org/exhibitions/jaouad-batiste-piano/#exhibition-works Guest's Links: Website - https://www.suleikajaouad.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/suleikajaouad/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SuleikaJaouadPage Substack - https://theisolationjournals.substack.com/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's motivation monday, I'm talking to Alison Arngrim.  New York Times Best Selling author of Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series Little House On The Prairie, and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Arngrim performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all-French version titled: Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie and La Malle aux Tresors de Nellie Oleson. As a stand-up comedian, Arngrim has headlined at nightclubs such as the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los Angeles; as well as the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York and assorted comedy venues across the United States and Canada. She is currently starring in two comedy series pilots: Life Interrupted, as the ex-wife of commercial child star Mason Reese, with Erin Murphy, (“Bewitched”) as her new wife and Dawn Wells, (“Gilligan's Island), as her mother, as well as, C.P.R. – Child Performers Resurrection Talent Agency, as an ex-child star gone wrong, trying to save herself and her assorted misfit cohorts by opening a talent agency. Arngrim has mocked her status as an “ex-child star” on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, during their month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor” and continues to be a frequent interview subject on everything from A&E, “E! Entertainment, TV Land and VH-1, to CNN and the Travel Channel. The TV Land network honored her undying image as TV's worst bitch, by declaring her the winner of their 2006 award for, “Character Most Desperately In Need Of A Time Out.” She starred in the heartwarming, gay, Christmas cult classic, Make the Yuletide Gay, as the overbearing “Heather Mancuso.” Her other television and film appearances include, Livin' the Dream, Tinder & Grinder, The Bilderberg Club, For the Love of May with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal, and The Last Place On Earth with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis Diller. In 2007, she began her foray into French cinema with the role of “Edith” in the French detective comedy, Jean Pierre Mocky's Le Deal. Her stage work includes, The Vagina Monologs, Sirena: Queen of the Tango, Dear Brutus, The Wool Gatherer, the French bedroom farce, In One Bed And Out The Other, Michael Kearns' AIDS/US II, “Rita” in the 2005 GLAAD Award nominated production of Last Summer At Bluefish Cove, the somewhat off kilter “Reverend Pat Miass” in Joni and Gina's Wedding, and the Ovation Award Nominated musical-drama, Flirting with Morty, as the abusive, trashy and tragic Ray Lee. In her spare time, she takes tourists on the rollicking comedy outing, Nasty Nellie's Tour of Hollywood, (featured at Dearly Departed Tours), where she simultaneously enlightens and amuses passengers with behind the scenes tales from both Hollywood history and her own life.   Offstage, Arngrim has been a dedicated and compassionate AIDS activist for nearly three decades, volunteering for AIDS Project Los Angeles and Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. How do you feel about interruptions? A welcome break from the monotony of life or a distraction from the more important things on your agenda? Jesus often “interrupts” our days, our lives to get our attention or move us in a new direction. For the biblical characters of the Christmas story, His birth was a huge interruption. As we look at their response to His interruption, let's ask ourselves this question; “Am I interruptible?"

When God entered this world, He did so in a way no one could have expected. It wasn’t in a palace or with great fanfare, but in a small, unremarkable town, in a barn surrounded by animals, born to poor parents under circumstances that seemed questionable to others. Yet, in this humble arrival, God made His way into our world so that we could experience God with us. No longer would there be a great divide between the Creator and His creation. God chose to put on flesh to bridge the gap, offering you and me the chance to reconnect with the very source of life itself. Through Jesus, He invites us into a kingdom life filled with purpose, hope, and a future. But this invitation often comes through an interruption—an interruption meant for our ultimate good. Today, we continue our Christmas series, Life Interrupted, with another visit from the angel Gabriel—this time to a young woman named Mary. God had been planning this moment from the beginning of time. As Galatians 4:4–5 says: "But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons." God’s purpose was to fix what was broken by the first sin. That sin stained every one of us, making us unfit for life with the one thing our hearts truly long for: connection with our Father. In fact, I would go so far as to say that every longing in your heart can be traced back to the desire to know and be known by God. This moment marked the beginning of the end of that separation. God put on flesh, walked among us, and became the final Lamb sacrificed for the forgiveness of sins for all who put their faith in Jesus Christ. But for this to happen, God had to interrupt someone else’s life. Remember, every child of God has committed themselves to this: “Your kingdom come, Your will be done.”

In this episode, Sachin interviews Dr. Jessica Drummond on a variety of topics around her journey from being a nurse practitioner in a clinical facility to being an integrative women's health practitioner, serving clients around the world. She speaks of her experience with long-haul COVID, and how her practice had prepared for her to be absent for two months while she recovered with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Dr. Jessica shares her business insights and how going digital in time for the pandemic was a great shift for her business. Listen to learn more about how Dr. Jessica navigates health and illness, hard times and good times, with the support of family, friends, and mentors.   Key Takeaways: [1:03] Sachin introduces today's guest, Dr. Jessica Drummond, who will talk about her health challenges and her business. Sachin welcomes Dr. Jessica to Perfect Practice.   [2:16] Dr. Jessica is a physical therapist and a certified clinical nutritionist with a doctorate in clinical nutrition. She graduated as a physical therapist in 1999, planning on sports medicine. She enjoys sports and exercise so she started her career in outpatient orthopedics.   [3:19] She grew interested in women's health. Within the first decade of her career, Dr. Jessica realized that physical therapy was not the complete answer to some of the more complex conditions affecting women.   [4:06] That's when Dr. Jessica dove in to learn more about health coaching, clinical nutrition, functional nutrition, and taking a more integrative perspective. Dr. Jessica mostly educates professionals but she has a small practice of clients with complex chronic illness.   [4:52] When you come at a complex condition with a holistic mindset, and let the client lead with all the things that they can do, that gets Dr. Jessica excited. We don't have a quick-fix solution for complex chronic illnesses like endometriosis.   [5:25] Dr. Jessica started the Integrative Women's Health Institute as CEO and Founder. Dr. Jessica thinks that having an athlete mindset has supported her in everything, not just her work. In terms of successfully navigating entrepreneurship, it absolutely helps her.   [6:26] From 2006 to 2010, Dr. Jessica's husband moved the family often as a consultant, so Dr. Jessica had to keep restarting in new clinical positions. She started her practice not to be an entrepreneur but to create something she could do anywhere.   [7:12] At the time Dr. Jessica didn't even have an iPhone, so she didn't have a lot of tools to do digital telehealth but it was possible. She had a beautiful office in her home to meet clients in, but all of them chose to work with her by telehealth, instead.   [8:10] Dr. Jessica's athlete mindset is flexible, curious, and persistent. She says if you just keep doing it, you overcome the obstacles. If you give up, you don't overcome the obstacles.   [8:39] Sachin is reading Areté, by Brian Johnson. He recommends it. It has 451 lessons on 1,000 pages. One lesson is about making 50 pounds of pottery to get the best final product in an art class, which is another way of putting in the reps.   [9:54] No one mentored Dr. Jessica in entrepreneurship, but she had a teacher who inspired her in digital marketing. She has a cousin entrepreneur who helped her a lot. All during her schooling, she expected to have a straightforward clinical career.   [11:58] Dr. Jessica's parents supported her education and paid for most of her schooling. She had a safety net. It's easier to be entrepreneurial when you have some financial cushion. She also still had her clinical skillset if she needed to fall back on a job, that helped her to take risks.   [14:00] In the beginning of her business, Dr. Jessica's challenge was technology and she never did a tone of it. As quickly as she could, she hired people to help her with technology. The way she learned is when she didn't know how to do something, she would do it and get feedback.   [14:46] Dr. Jessica thinks what gets people stuck is thinking through how to do something, and learning about how to do it, instead of doing it. The most valuable thing for her to do was to try something and then see if it worked.   [15:09] Dr. Jessica was building the first large-scale digital version of her women's health coach certification when she met JJ Virgin, who encouraged her to sell it first and then build it, so she did.   [16:45] For the first five years when Dr. Jessica was launching larger-scale global programs, she would go talk about them anywhere in the world that invited her to speak, if there were more than 20 people. She went all over the place.   [17:08] Dr. Jessica overcame obstacles by taking action. That required doing a lot of things, like being on the news, filming YouTube videos, and speaking in front of audiences who heckled her. She knew that what she was talking about was helpful for patients because she had seen it.   [20:19] Sachin had a conversation with an investment banker who told him the three things investors look for when buying a business: EBITDA, How much the Founder is involved in operations, and SOP.   [20:52] Many entrepreneurs were challenged by the pandemic. It affected Dr. Jessica with long-haul symptoms. [21:39] Dr. Jessica thanks Sachin for the help he provided to her with breathwork, while she was ill. The year 2020 was great for the Integrative Women's Health Institute because they were ahead of the curve. Her colleagues at in-person practices were shut down.   [22:36] Dr. Jessica and her team were able to quickly pivot and educate people through telehealth with a decade of telehealth experience by that point. If you're creative and constantly looking for opportunities, sometimes you're a little bit ahead of the curve and can take advantage of shifts.   [23:02] Her colleagues who run small private practices were willing to adapt. Some of them grew new lines of service but in the short term, it was hard. For Dr. Jessica, the short-term was great.   [23:21] Then, in December 2020, Dr. Jessica got COVID-19. She thought with Vitamin D, she would be strong. She was shocked to become super sick. She was weak for months and had more long-haul issues. Almost four years later, it's still something she manages.   [24:03] Being so sick cost Dr. Jessica a lot of money. She was grateful to have some cushion from earlier in 2020. Dr. Jessica had a team of 20 running the company. They stepped up. Dr. Jessica was grateful to have work, to tether her to reality as she recovered.   [24:59] Dr. Jessica says part of the healing is staying contributory, even if in small ways. There's a sense of purpose in the work.   [25:41] The systems and structure of Dr. Jessica's company had to be ironclad. At that point, they were not, so she brought in a fractional COO. They reorganized the team a bit and the COO is still with the company today.   [26:12] In 2023, as a part of her long-haul COVID recovery, Dr. Jessica went to the hospital at Yale for hyperbaric oxygen therapy which was key to her complete recovery. It required hours of therapy every day for 40 sessions, so she took two months off work.   [27:03] At that point, the Integrative Women's Health Institute had built all the structure and systems to have everything running without Dr. Jessica's participation. They were able to maintain their revenue generation, and profitability, and support their students and clients.   [27:26] This year, they are working on how to scale their strongest programs. Dr. Jessica has hand-picked the strongest programs that they want to keep doing. They have a clear path to the goals to hit to get to the ideal EBITDA for profitability, and for the company to be stronger.   [28:03] When you go from being at the peak of health to the week later, almost dying, you think about your business as a resource for your family, if they were to need it and you weren't there.   [28:19] Dr. Jessica doubled down on creating and optimizing SOPs, so her skilled team can continue to scale the mission of women's integrative healthcare. Dr. Jessica has worked very hard on this asset for 15 years. If anything happens to her, her family will recoup something.   [29:18] Hopefully, Dr. Jessica won't die suddenly, and she and her husband will have something out of the intense work of the past 15 years.   [30:35] Dr. Jessica says if someone has long-haul, the key is figuring out what kind of long-haul. There are different underlying causes. The most common symptom is fatigue. Dr. Jessica supported her mitochondria from Day 1, so she never had fatigue. Support your mitochondria.   [31:11] The second thing is thinking of oxygen as a nutrient. For Dr. Jessica, hyperbaric oxygen therapy was key. You may have capillary microclotting. You may be dealing with organ damage or irritation to the immune system that triggers mast cell activation syndrome.   [34:31] Because you create a business out of thin air, you can create it in any way that you want. It's valuable from the beginning to think about the pieces of it that could run without you needing to be fully present even for a little bit at a time. You can keep expanding it.   [35:01] It doesn't have to be about a crisis. Dr. Jessica has learned that stepping away from the business for weeks or months brings a presence to her most important people. It also brings her new ideas and more energy to bring back to the company when she has had a true rest.   [37:09] Sachin recently had three days in the wilderness. It was magical; time stood still. He was fully present. No new information was coming in. He was off the grid. Having three-day weekends now and then can be a great stepping stone if you are afraid to fully unplug.   [37:54] Sachin went to India a few years ago. His business ran better while he was gone! A true business benefits when you're there but doesn't rely on you to exist. It's like raising children. The more they grow, the more independent they become.   [39:26] The pandemic was a turning point for many businesses. Some businesses were ahead of the curve and took off. Some businesses that were strictly physical took a bit of a hit. Things are open again. Assess what would happen in another crisis. Would your business survive?   [40:20] Dr. Jessica says we can stress-test our businesses, but we don't know what the next stressor will be. That's where flexibility and the willingness to try crazy things come in. True entrepreneurs survive long-term by treating stressors as interesting challenges for creativity.   [41:01] Always do the best you can. You can't control everything. The stronger the foundation of the business is, the healthier it will be.   [41:24] Sachin mentions a mutual mentor, JJ Virgin. Dr. Jessica gives a shoutout to a colleague, Greg Todd, who was not a direct mentor but reached out to help when she was ill. Also, Fabian Frederickson, and also her Dad, as a sounding board with his experience in the business world.   [42:30] Dr. Jessica credits her team with putting their heads together to figure out what to do. Dr. Jessica goes to a lot of conferences and just listens. She chats with friends and colleagues such as Trudi, Magdalena, Isabella, and a few others she met through JJ years ago.   [43:15] Being an entrepreneur can be lonely compared to working in a hospital with colleagues every day. Not all of Dr. Jessica's mentors have been formal, but she finds mentorship through being friends with people who are doing the same thing.   [44:14] Dr. Jessica just started reading a fiction book about the Panama Canal. One of the books that recently impacted her the most is Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times, by Katherine May. It's a beautiful book about navigating life when it is hard.   [44:47] Another book that helped Dr. Jessica navigate living with a chronic illness is Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted, by Suleika Jaouad, written by a woman who had cancer and recovered. Both books changed Dr. Jessica's definitions of health and disease.   [45:16] Dr. Jessica sees health and disease now as more of a continuum. Defining “healthy” is so elusive. Defining “sick” can be somewhat elusive, too. We don't have to call ourselves one or the other, no matter what stage of health we are in. It's the same with life being hard or easy.   [46:35] Sachin talks about seasonality in life, and if you prepare, you can navigate all the seasons as they come up in our day. Sachin thanks Dr. Jessica for sharing her insights and some amazing nuggets of wisdom on Perfect Practice. This time has been valuable.   [47:07] Learn more about the work of Dr. Jessica at IntegrativeWomensHealthInstitute.com, on Instagram @IntegrativeWomensHealth, and on The Integrative Women's Health Podcast.   [47:28] Sachin thanks Dr. Jessica again for taking time out of her day. Sachin wishes continued health, happiness, and wholeness to her, her family, and those around her. Dr. Jessica wishes the same for Sachin.   Mentioned in this episode Perfect Practice Live Jessica Drummond Areté: Activate Your Heroic Potential, by Brian Johnson Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times, by Katherine May Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted, by Suleika Jaouad   More about your host Sachin Patel How to speak with Sachin Go one step further and Become The Living Proof Perfect Practice Live sachin@becomeproof.com To set up a practice clarity call and opportunity audit   Books by Sachin Patel: Perfect Practice: How to Build a Successful Functional Medical Business, Attract Your Ideal Patients, Serve Your Community, and Get Paid What You're Worth The Motivation Molecule: The Biological Secrets To Eliminate Procrastination, Skyrocket Productivity, and Get Sh!t Done   Tweetables:   “I started my practice, not with an intentional decision to become an entrepreneur. What does it mean to you to live a life with no regrets? Is that even possible? What if it's less about avoiding regrets entirely and more about being clear on your values, dreams, and desires and combining that with intentional practices to build a life focused on things that matter to you and the world around you?Of course, this takes work because we're constantly pulled in many different directions and responding to many inputs, just trying to keep our heads above water. To lead well, we must get clarity in our values and develop trusting relationships with our inner worlds and physical bodies.Instead of chasing a life with zero regrets, we need to learn to respond well to our regrets in the moment. If we want to look back and feel good about how we responded, we can't numb out or bypass; we must make amends and correct our course.Today's conversation is with a long-time friend and colleague who reminds us that living an aligned life is a meandering path, a life that is always stretched and tested. It's not always easy, but when we stay connected to our values, desires, and integrity, there can be ease and clarity even in the hard times.Molly Mahar is the founder of Stratejoy, a community helping women reclaim intimate, honest, and joyful relationships with themselves for the good of all. She's an entrepreneur, mama, writer, and adventurer obsessed with designing personal experiments that scare you, telling the truth, and her new teardrop trailer. “What is it like to be a clinician with a patient who either comes because they're going to be dying or it happens in the treatment -  what is it like for the clinician? It's lonely in a way because there is a lot of parallel with what the patient is going through. To me, and as a field, I would like to think we could talk about this and write about it. My peer group at the time was terribly important to me - colleagues, people that basically would be with me in this. But in the end I was the one that went alone to the service at the funeral home and I went to my patient's luncheon, not to have the lunch but to talk to the family, and then I left - I didn't stay for the lunch, I thought that might be a little intrusive. There's nothing really to read about, talk about, pick somebody's brain about how do they experience this in their work or I don't really understand why we've been so quiet about this in our work.” PW   “You mentioned about being alone in it, and there is a way in which it's very true. I think a large part is that not many of our colleagues have had this experience. But on the flip side, maybe because I've worked with so many patients and I'm beginning to notice a certain consistency, but I've also had such an experience of close intimacy with these patients. There's a closeness that is to be had particularly in analytic work and work over time - but it happens quite quickly in the work with dying patients, and in that regard, I felt less alone in my work. In some ways in the rest of our work, because we maintain a careful distance in a way, a boundary with the patient, a frame - I feel with the dying patients, I feel like both of us are more in the room together.” MM     Episode Description: We begin with acknowledging the tension that exists between the literal and metaphoric aspects of the analytic relationship and how that is highlighted in the face of physical illness in either party. We focus on patients' illnesses both as they present upon initial consultation and when they develop in the course of treatment. Mark describes his years of work with cancer patients, and Peggy shares her experience with an analysand who, in the 6th year of her treatment, developed a terminal illness. We consider the emotional challenges associated with making home visits, the meaning of 'boundaries', feelings associated with fees, and the shared experience of love between patient and analyst. We consider the ways that the analyst's affective intensity may also be associated with earlier and feared illnesses in their own life. We close with considering the difficulties that our field has in honestly communicating this aspect of the heart and soul of psychoanalysis.   Linked Episodes: Episode 23: A Psychoanalyst Encounters the Dying – Discovering ‘Existential Maturity'   Episode 40: How Psycho-Oncology Informs an Approach to the Covid-19 Crises with Norman Straker, MD   Our Guests: Mark Moore, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst who works in private practice in Philadelphia.
