It Is an Existential Threat to the American Dream.  Recently, President Trump has been quoted as referring to the affordability crisis as a “Democrat scam,” “hoax,” and “con job.” Although I think Trump was likely trying to remind Americans that policies enacted when Democrats had total control of the federal government under the first two years of the Biden administration accelerated and exacerbated the affordability problem, it is dangerous for the president to use that type of language. Already, mainstream media reprobates are twisting Trump's words, leading people to believe that he is saying the affordability crisis does not exist.  In proper context, Trump is not denying that middle- and lower-class Americans are struggling to make ends meet; rather, he is trying to assign blame and hang the affordability crisis on the Democrats. But here’s the really wild part: GAO tried to track $21 billion in subsidies from 2023 back to actual Social Security numbers. The system allows multiple enrollments per SSN “to help ensure actual SSN-holder can enroll in cases of identity theft or data entry errors.” In other words: we built in workarounds so generous that fraud looks identical to legitimate use. Now Congress is fighting over whether to extend these enhanced COVID subsidies past December 31. Cost to keep them? $30 billion annually. 24 million people enrolled, over 90% getting subsidies. Without extension, premiums spike overnight and 22 million people might lose coverage. Republicans looking at GAO’s findings saying: this is exactly why we shouldn’t pour another $30B into a system that can’t tell fake accounts from real ones. Democrats saying: you’re going to kick 22 million people off insurance because less than 1% is fraud? Both sides kinda have a point. Yeah, the fraud’s under 1% of total enrollees. But when you’re burning $30B yearly and literally cannot verify where $21B went, “less than 1%” stops sounding so minor. Senate vote coming this week. Expected to fail. Which means scramble for short-term extension, fight continues into 2026 budget battles, and absolutely nothing changes about fraud controls. However, yesterday evening, the premier expressed skepticism about the notion that a multinational force meant to patrol Gaza could successfully disarm Hamas. We speak about Israel's concerns, Hamas's alleged readiness to "freeze" its weapons arsenal and the current facts on the ground in Gaza. Israeli and Qatari officials met in New York on Sunday, according to a report, in the first of a series of trilateral meetings set up by US envoy Steve Witkoff, who is looking to mend ties that were frayed by Israel’s botched September strike on Hamas offices in Qatar. Recenta vizită a premierului ungar Viktor Orban la Kremlin are urmări – și urmări nedorite de liderul de la Budapesta. Liderii țărilor care fac parte din Grupul de la Vișegrad – Polonia, Cehia, Slovacia și Ungaria – se reunesc miercuri în orașul ungar Esztergom. În cadrul vizitei sale în Ungaria pentru această întâlnire, președintele Nawrocki și soția sa urmau să se întâlnească joi, la Budapesta, cu președintele Ungariei, Tamas Sulyok și cu șeful guvernului, Viktor Orban, potrivit cotidianului polonez „Gazeta Wyborcza”. Și alte critici s-au făcut auzite. În marja summitului germano-sloven  de vineri, cancelarul german Friedrich Merz a declarat că premierul ungar nu a avut „mandat european”. Premierul sloven Robert Golob a fost de acord cu Merz, afirmând că nu se așteaptă la niciun beneficiu sau avantaj de pe urma acestei vizite. Vizita lui Orbán la Moscova ar putea fi considerată un act ostil împotriva UE, potrivit lui Jacob Kirkegaard, expert în cadrul think-tank-ului Bruegel, care susține că Ungaria sabotează eforturile UE de a obține un acord de pace echitabil pentru Ucraina. Es ist eine Woche, in der vieles auf eine Entscheidung hinausläuft, in der Außen- wie in der Innenpolitik. Während die Koalition im Rentenstreit ringt, versucht der Bundeskanzler aus Afrika, Einfluss auf einen möglichen neuen Friedensplan für die Ukraine zu nehmen. Friedrich Merz muss seine Aufmerksamkeit mehr denn je balancieren und scheint dabei auf internationaler Bühne einen besseren Job zu machen. Kann Merz nur Außenkanzler? Diese Frage diskutiert Anne Will mit der Journalistin Henrike Roßbach. Die kommissarische Leiterin des Parlamentsbüros der Süddeutschen Zeitung beobachtet Merz seit Jahren und hat ihn auch bei seiner Afrika-Reise begleitet. Unterhändler aus den USA, der Ukraine und Europa haben in Genf über Details des Friedensplans für Kiew verhandelt. Der Kanzler spricht von einem mühsamen Prozess, von der Leyen von einer nun vorhandenen „soliden Grundlage“.

Bei den Genfer Gesprächen drängten die Ukraine und ihre europäischen Partner auf die Überarbeitung des US-28-Punkte-Plans, der ursprünglich harte Zugeständnisse von Kiew verlangte.

Die Waffenruhe im Libanon droht vollends zu scheitern. »Koalition der Willigen« berät über US-Friedensplan für die Ukraine. Und: Merz hat im Rentenstreit nur schlechte Optionen.
