Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.It will run from 8 May to 11 May, the Kremlin said on Telegram.It also comes following a much discussed meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodomyr Zelenskyy over the weekend.Bill Browder, Financier and Commentator, joins guest host Anton Savage to discuss.Image: Reuters

“Over 20 years,” writer, investor and campaigner Bill Browder tells Peter Bruce in this Special Edition of Podcasts from the Edge, “Vladimir Putin and his friends have stolen a trillion dollars from Russia.” He has to distract his people or they'd lynch him and It's why he can't stop his invasion of Ukraine. Russia today, Browder says, is a much more totalitarian state than apartheid South Africa ever was. In this wide ranging discussion the author of Red Notice and, more recently, Freezing Order, reveals his favourite country in the world is South Africa. He has a home in Cape Town but dare not visit for fear that Putin would ask the South Africans to arrest him and hand him over. And he worries that they would.

Can Britain and the EU step up to Trump's bullying and order the disorder via increasing sanctions and possibly confiscating currently frozen Russian assets and using them to fund Ukrainian defence? This is certainly the question of the day and we at Disorder tackle it via our first live show recorded on March 21 at the famous Frontline Club in London. Extremist ideologies and the conspiracy vehicles that carry them are now heard throughout mainstream social and political discourse. When it comes to Russia, Trump's America appears on the verge of a major foreign policy U-turn. A couple of weeks ago, Trump called Zelenskyy a dictator and lyingly claimed that Ukraine had started the war. Then there was the February 28 ‘Oval Office Ambush' heard round the world. Don't forget that after years of isolating and sanctioning Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, Team Trump met face to face with the Russian Foreign Minister in Saudi and now appears ready to do direct business with Russia and to be actively seeking to humiliate the Ukrainians.   Despite these worrying moves, at the moment, the U-turn remains hypothetical… all words, not yet binding actions. So… how seriously should we take this perspective shift? Does the ‘Vance/Trump Oval Office Ambush' change everything? And what are the implications for Europe and its allies if America actually switches sides to support Russia long term?   To discuss this perilous moment, we're joined again by Sir Bill Browder, a successful investor, a globally acclaimed author, and a famous philanthropist/humanitarian advocate. Sir William Felix Browder provides a distinguished start to Season 4.  As CEO and Founder of Hermitage, Bill Browder became the largest portfolio investor in Russia.  He traces his family's early connections to Russia, and then tells one of the singular tales of courage in this century.  Browder went from Russian insider to mortal Putin foe.  He was able to escape Russia, but his attorney and friend Sergei Magnitsky was imprisoned on phony embezzlement charges, tortured and killed.  Bill responded by pushing for the enactment of the Magnitsky Act in the United States, as well as laws in 16 other nations providing for asset seizure and sanctions in response to human rights violations.  Bill talks about his ongoing interests in global politics as well as his post-Russia activities as a private investor in US Middle Market private equity.

Convicted felon Donald Trump relies on a well-worn GOP playbook to scare their voters to the polls: stir up moral panic over LGBTQ people. Moms for Liberty—well-funded by shadowy right-wing interests—are out there banning books and promoting anti-trans, anti-gay laws straight from Viktor Orban's Hungary and Putin's Russia. We might inadvertently feed into their culture war hysteria if we don't step back and see how their disinformation machine works. As Erin Reed points out in her essential guide to our times “Erin in the Morning,” trans care is under attack in half of the country. Meanwhile, the far right stirs up fear, demonizing trans people, especially trans children and their families, just like Karl Rove did with gay marriage in 2004, to secure a second term for war criminal George W. Bush. But trans people have always existed. They're part of human history, brutally erased by colonial powers, according to a must-read report from ABC News in our show notes below.  So, what's the antidote to the far-right's moral panic? Call it out for what it is. Protect trans kids. Push back against oligarchs. Remember, this is about basic human rights. As highlighted in Abi Maxwell's poignant memoir One Day I'll Grow Up and Be a Beautiful Woman: A Mother's Story, love and dignity for trans children are crucial to building safer, more compassionate communities for everyone. Maxwell's story focuses on her daughter, Greta, a courageous little girl who, from a very young age, understood she was a girl, even though she was born a boy. The confusion wasn't Greta's—it was the adults around her, including teachers and parents in their small New Hampshire town, who struggled to accept her identity. Maxwell recounts their family's painful journey through relentless bullying and institutional barriers, a journey that mirrors the challenges faced by countless other trans families in America today. Maxwell's memoir isn't just a heart-wrenching tale of a mother fighting for her child; it's also a stark reminder of how disinformation and fearmongering, often driven by far-right extremists, are weaponized to divide us. Remember when Trump was impeached for holding up Ukraine aid to pressure Zelensky into fabricating a scandal about Biden? That's how Trump famously operates—pushing for a quid pro quo. That brings us to Egypt, a dictatorship with a track record of bribing Americans, including disgraced Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who was found guilty on all counts of being a paid foreign agent of Egypt. In 2016, Trump met with Egyptian dictator Abdel Fattah el-Sisi behind closed doors at the U.N. General Assembly weeks before the election, likely breaking the Logan Act at a time when President Obama's foreign policy shunned el-Sisi for his human rights abuses and overthrowing Egypt's first democratically elected leader.   But it gets worse. Trump's relationship with Egypt isn't just about money; it's about power—nuclear power. El-Sisi's regime is closely aligned with the Kremlin. Experts raised alarms about Russia's nuclear ambitions in the Middle East, where earlier this year Russia began building a nuclear power station in Egypt. In the polls, convicted felon Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are essentially tied. Jill Stein, Cornel West, and RFK, Jr. are third-party candidates, supported by far-right dark money groups aiming to "Ralph Nader" the election in Trump's favor. Meanwhile, mainstream media—especially the New York Times—continues to normalize MAGA fascism. Alex was born and raised in a socialist regime of former Yugoslavia, under one-party communist rule. As a 17-year old he joined a student exchange program and spent a year in California. Extending his stay, he took up his university studies there, ultimately transferring to Switzerland where he completed a degree in Business and Economics. From Switzerland his path led him to Venezuela where he lived for a year and experienced his first banking crisis when 9 of Venezuela's 16 largest banks failed and brought the country's economy to a grinding halt. With his plans and endeavours thwarted, he returned to Croatia and joined the military where he served through 1995 during the last phases of Croatia's war of independence. Soon after finishing his military service, Alex took employment at an oil trading company in Monaco. By the year 2000 he became the firm's risk manager and originated the firm's research and development program in market analysis and application of neural networks and artificial intelligence in trading of financial and commodities markets. By 2007 Alex launched his own investment management business and was among the small minority of managers who generated positive investment returns (+27%) through the 2008 financial crisis. Over the following six years, his fund outperformed the Dow Jones Credit Suisse index of Blue Chip commodities trading funds. This opened the door into the big league asset managers and in 2011 Alex Joined Lee Robinson's Altana Wealth with the mandate of managing the firm's inflation hedging strategy. In more recent years, Alex also busied himself as an author.
