Happy New Year Episode ... This is Part 2 of 2, of our incredible interview series with Lou Vairo. In this segment, Lou shares with us stories of epic proportion. Added to this, Lou spends time sharing his secret(s) to becoming a "great" leader. Within this episode, Lou will share with us how some of his simple - yet overly complex and difficult decision making, which altered the lives of many people (professional athletes and coaches), was accomplished by simply resting upon the life skills provided to him at young age. You will learn about how his insights and instincts gave career opportunities and re-births to so many, when their levels of significance were looked-past by many so-called "experts". Delays in releasing this episode were the result of several technical issues we experienced. Lou Vairo's interview(s) are some of the most listened to and commented on. THANK YOU Lou for taking the time to talk with us. *Special Thank You to - Joe Stanczyk and Mike McKinley from Libertayo Lou Vairo's Book The Godfather of US Hockey

For many of us, the ability to meet and connect with a living legend is something beyond our wildest imagination. The ability to connect with Lou Vairo is equivalent to being able to access the archives of the "Smithsonian" of US Hockey. Lou Vairo is responsible for the implementation of the physical training, strategic plans, and moral compass of ice hockey as we know it today. Lou helped implement the physical training used by some of the most dominant athletic programs in the world today. It was Lou who introduced these training styles to North American hockey programs. These physical training systems were then transformed into the technical strategies used by most professional programs throughout North America today. But, arguably the most incredible element Lou Vairo introduced to the National Hockey League has been the implementation of the Diversity Program today. Not only has this program brought the important recognition of the efforts of Willie O'Ree but it has helped grow the game of ice hockey more than words can describe. *Special Thank You to - Joe Stanczyk and Mike McKinley from Libertayo Media. We close out season #10 in style as I am joined by a trio of outstanding people, Mitch Laurance, Ross Greenburg, and David Peoples. Mitch Laurance has hosted several fantastic golf podcasts, the most recent is Talking Golf Getaways. He's also one of my favorite people on the planet. Mitch's perspective as a golf Historian is invaluable. He exclusively plays hickory clubs and a golf ball from the 1920s. Rolling the golf back means nothing to him but his perspective on the loss of trust between the PGA Tour and the fans has impacted his desire to watch golf on TV; that is something the PGA Tour should sit up and listen to. We also hear about his experience being in Rome for the Ryder Cup earlier this year and why it seems to mean so much more to the European fans than it does for us in the US. Ross Greenburg is the former President of HBO Sports and is now head of Ross Greenburg Productions. He's produced many of the great films and documentaries of our time. He did 61 with Billy Crystal, Miracle the movie about the 1980 US Hockey team, a series of documentary films for the USGA including the battle between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus at the 1962 US Open at Oakmont, the 1999 US Open won by Payne Stewart, and the 1991 Ryder Cup, the War at the Shore. Ross takes us inside the making of each of those films plus tell us what it was like being in Tokyo for the Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas fight and interviewing both fighters prior to the fight. David Peoples played his college golf at the Unversity of Florida alongside our good friend Mark Calc plus Rick Pearson and Larry Rentz. We get some funny stories of how those guys punished their clubs when they didn't act right, like Rick tying his putter behind the team van and dragging it back to Gainesville, and Larry trying out for the Gator football team. We also hear about David's wins at the 1990 Kapalua Invitational, the '91 Southern Open, and the '92 Anheuser Busch Classic over some legendary fields.

Taking positive things from other players. 10. “I don't want to be respected because I was a good player. I want to be respected because I was a good teammate.” 11. Starting points in leadership development: Core values. Compassion. Relationships. 20. “The part I've enjoyed most about my journey in sport is the fact that I've been able to share it with my brothers and sisters and dad and mom. We're all connected by sport.” 21. His dad never pushed hockey upon him.
Many will never forget Mike's game-winning goal in the "Miracle on Ice" game to defeat the USSR, but Mike was also the Captain of the iconic team that brought home a Gold Medal in Lake Placid in the 1980 Olympics. We kick off the second hour of today's show by discussing where the new look Penguins go from here. Crowley also breaks down what he thinks the lines should look like for the most part moving forward. Exciting stuff. Jesse Marshall then hops on the program to give us his takes about the new young Penguins and what we should expect from these young guys. Apparently Canada has a baseball hall of fame, and apparently they've been inducting Americans, and that's some BS according to us.

Despite bringing in more money and winning more games (including four Olympics and 3 World Cups), the U.S. women's national soccer team was paid nearly four times less than the men’s team. But two years ago, the team made headlines when they started a very public fight for equal pay. Since then, they’ve emerged as a role model and a valuable resource for other women’s teams like US Hockey and the WNBA. Why are female athletes paid less, even when they perform better? And how much better could they be if they had basic accommodations like extra leg room on flights to games (especially for players over 6 feet tall?). I asked sports writer Britni de la Cretaz and WNBA icon, Swin Cash. Have strong opinions? Episode 18 of the Pro Hockey Alumni Podcast is a Tribute to US Hockey legend Keith “Huffer” Christensen, who died on November 5th, 2018 at the age 74. After a legendary high school career in International Falls, MN, Huffer became a standout player at The University of Minnesota Duluth in the 1960s, putting that program on the hockey map. He captained the silver medal winning 1972 US Olympic hockey team and concluded his playing career in the World Hockey Association with Minnesota Fighting Saints. In 2005 he was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. At just 5-6 and 155 pounds, Huffer was small in stature, but big in heart and talent. To help commemorate Huffer's career, we'll talk with three of his Olympic teammates: RW Tim Sheehy, Center Henry Boucha and goaltender Mike Curran. We'll learn about what made Huffer a special player and person — and we'll examine the strong bond that the 1972 Olympic team still has today. Rest in Peace, Huffer Christiansen Host: Mark Willand Pro Hockey Alumni ITunes SoundCloud Stitcher Twitter Facebook Instagram Google Play

Internationally acclaimed multi-media artist/illustrator/designer Wayland Moore joins the podcast from his studio in suburban Atlanta to discuss his nearly six-decade career as one of America’s most recognizable commercial artists – including some of his most notable works in the realm of professional sports. Designer of such iconic team logos such as pro soccer’s Atlanta Chiefs (National Professional Soccer League, 1967; North American Soccer League, 1968-73 & 1979-81); and, most legendarily, New York Cosmos (NASL, 1971-85) – Moore is also known for his extensive promotional artwork for baseball’s Atlanta Braves, including the design and color scheme for the team’s 1974 season uniform, in anticipation of the worldwide attention surrounding Henry Aaron’s eventual record-breaking 715th career home run on April 8, 1974 – forever memorialized in “Hammerin’ Hank”’s Baseball Hall of Fame exhibit. In this very intriguing conversation, Moore reflects on: his most memorable commissioned pieces from major sporting events like US Hockey’s 1980 Winter Olympics “Miracle on Ice,” and 1973’s “Battle of the Sexes” between tennis legends Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King; his curious sports Impressionism “rivalry” with LeRoy Nieman; and his experiences in the age-old economic tension between art and commerce that most pointedly and persistently presents itself in the business of professional sports. Moore also shares his surprising advice for well-intentioned nostalgia lovers faced with opportunities to purchase newly-reissued items of memorabilia featuring his formerly trademarked designs, from which he no longer financially benefits.
