For this episode we're joined – all the way from L.A. – by special guest Bob Merlis. The former head of publicity at Warner-Reprise Records in Burbank talks us through his musical odyssey from his Brooklyn childhood to his continuing PR work for the likes of ZZ Top and Carlene Carter. We hear about Bob's start at Record World in late '60s New York and the early '70s pieces he wrote for that trade publication and for Warners' short-lived Words & Music. Our guest then talks about his brief stints at RCA and Albert Grossman's Bearsville Records before touching on key acts and moments in the nearly three decades he spent in Burbank: Little Feat's Lowell George, Jerry Wexler producing Etta James and Warners president Joe Smith roasting the infamous Morris Levy. Clips from Dave Zimmer's 1988 audio interview with Neil Young prompt discussion of that quintessential Reprise artist (and his comrades in CSNY). After Mark quotes from pieces about Elektra Records dropping the MC5 and free-improv guitarist Derek Bailey, Jasper talks us out with reflections on the musical passions of footballer Rio Ferdinand and Houston rapper Chamillionaire. Many thanks to special guest Bob Merlis. For info on Bob's PR work, visit https://mfhpr.com/m-f-h-at-20. Pieces discussed: R&B is B(l)ack and Involved, Jerry Wexler Crosses Tracks for Tony Joe, Todd Rundgren Warps Time, Lowell George Talks About Little Feat, Little Feat Keeps On Truckin', Little Feat: How To Construct a "Critics' Band", Neil Young audio, Elektra Records Kicks Out MC5, Derek Bailey: Themes on Improvisation, The Record Doctor: Rio Ferdinand and Chamillionaire: Change.

Hello….it’s Love That Album. Todd Rundgren must have shares in a millinery, because he wears a lot of hats. Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, video producer, (it can be argued) comedian…….He doesn’t do anything by half-measures. Rundgren started his recording career with rock group Nazz in the late 60s, then branched out to work as a producer for Bearsville Records when he found out he was unhappy with other producers’ work. He’s responsible for a multitude of records as producer / engineer for the likes of The Tubes, The Band, Cheap Trick, and ummmm……Meatloaf. He started a run of his own records at Bearsville with 1970’s Runt establishing a very Rundgren-esque sound. For this episode of the podcast, I am joined by film blogger Kerry Gately Fristoe to talk about his third album, “Something / Anything.” How many other artists would release a double-album of diverse studio material that early in their career? With 3 sides of the album featuring the one musician playing every instrument….really well? Kerry and I talk about all manner of things around this album including arson, venereal diseases, Vikings, and zits…..as well as the less common subject matter from songwriters of love and heartbreak. We took some diversions (as is this show’s modus operandi), but in hindsight, not nearly enough. A huge thank you goes to Kerry for being such a great co-host for this one. You can download the show from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”) or from the website at http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com. Kerry’s excellent film-blog can be found at http://prowlerneedsajump.wordpress.com Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum. Hey Brothers and Sisters! We're starting off this show with a blast from my past...The Rocky Fellers - Killer Joe on Scepter Records 1963...this was on the turntable in my household always when my older sister, Janet would have her friends over for "sock hops"! Yeowza….bullet bras and everything!Set 1 - Come backs & MarblesChuck Wiley formerly of The Rock-its with a solo blast from 1965..."Come Back Baby" on Music Center Records / a killer 45 rpmFoghat follows with "Sara Lee" offa their 1st offering from 1972 on Bearsville Records....basically Foghat is Savoy Brown minus Kim Simmonds and adding Rod Price from Black Cat Bones to sit in the big chair.....Moby Grape kills it with "Going Nowhere" off of their first LP sans founder Skip Spence / "Grape '69"....Spence tried to part Don Stephenson's & Jerry Miller's hair with an axe so they thought it would be better to "go on without you" like the lyrics to "8:05".John McLaughlin segues nicely via Buddy Miles bass drum foot with "Marbles" a terrific cut off of "Devotion" from Douglas Records 1970.Los Miros [The Blackbirds] provide all the bed music for this episode ….'Sonada Amazona" which I think translates as "The song of the Amazon"....they're from Peru and all their records came out either in Peru or Colombia....tough to find.Set 2: Hobby Horses and Go Go'sBlossom Toes start off the 2nd set with a cover of Richie Havens' great "Just above my hobby horses head"...I'm not sure what Havens was musing about but The Toes covered it on the b-side of "Peace Loving Man" / Marmalade Records 1969.Richie follows with "Run Shaker Life" off of "Something Else Again"....and again I don't really know what he's talking about. I interviewed RH and found him to be a genuine nice guy....The Onion Radio News - A broke dad makes his son a playstation in the garage...Tracy Bonham - Mother mother...her first LP / CD "The Burdens of Being Upright"....wow!JJ Cale - It's a go go place / Liberty 1965 / 45 rpm. This record sits proudly in my 6000 + 45 collection....I think labelmate Henry Vestine of Canned Heat takes the lead guitar chores...Bed: Los Miros….see aboveSet 3 - Modern Lovers and Mr. BlueJonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers - She cracked / House of Hits 1976. Demos recorded in 1972 and slapped together by John Cale for a killer record.Talking Heads - Don't worry about the government / Sire 1977 / LP - "77". Do this and you'll be in more trouble than that Wikileaks cat!Another Onion Radio News....this time its the Weekly News....Prince Charles seizes the government....what a friggin wimp this guy is.Clear Lilght - Mr Blue / Elektra 1967 / Self titled LP.Tim Buckley - Once I Was / Elektra 1967 / "Goodby and Hello"I saw The Light open up for Tim at the Café A-Go-Go when both these records came out.....Great show.....Lee Underwood played with Buckley and put me in an altered state...and speaking of AS's....The singer in Clear Light was actor Cliff DeYoung who did his best "I'm from LA and I'm tripping ala Jim Morrison on stage"....no real complaints because we weren't on stage but were dosed ourselves......as an aside: one of the 2 drummers they performed with was Dallas Taylor...he's the guy staring out the window on the 1st CSN LP....L8ter G8ter's.....
Foghat began their career in 1971 as a bunch of rather unpretentious young Brits with an affection for American blues and '50s rock 'n' roll. By the middle of the decade, they had evolved into a major touring and recording act, playing a pumped-up brand of boogie-rock to arena-size audiences. Their looks grew flashier, their sound fattened and filled out, yet the roots-rock core of the band remained ever-present under the surface. From the viewpoint of certain critics, Foghat unduly compromised their early blues-based approach in order to reap commercial rewards. Certainly, their mid-'70s hits ("Slow Ride," "Drivin' Wheel," "Stone Blue") were not aimed at the rock purists of the world. But it's also true that they continued to record traditional blues and R&B material throughout their years with Bearsville Records. In fact, Foghat's final albums on Bearsville reaffirmed their love for unadulterated, primal American music. The band latest Album, "Under The Influence" is as classic as the band itself! Slacker sits down with Roger Earl and Brian Bassett. #Foghat
In Part 2 of this special edition of Retrosonic Podcast we are very pleased to welcome back Harley Feinstein, the original drummer with Sparks. Harley appeared on the band's first two Bearsville Records albums "Halfnelson/Sparks" and "A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing", and their very first visit to the UK back in the early Seventies. In the previous Episode Harley told us about how he first met Ron and Russell Mael and joined the band. Now in Part 2, Harley talks about the band's first experiences in a studio with Todd Rundgren and James Lowe of The Electric Prunes and how a notorious bunch of Groupies contributed to them getting signed to Bob Dylan's manager's record label. This introduces the band to the nefarious world of the music business with it's aggressive managers and pressure to "make it". There's the enforced name change from Halfnelson to Sparks and we discover some of the hilarious, and slightly worrying, alternate names that the band might have been lumbered with. We follow the band to England and their first TV appearance on Old Grey Whistle Test and sold-out gig at the Marquee and residency at The Pheasantry and the taste of what can be achieved on record company expenses. We then find out how an ill-fated trip to Zermatt in Switzerland became the final nail in the coffin for the band at that time. Soundtracked by early Sparks songs including material from their original demo album, this is a fascinating tale of Sparks' formative years. Paul began his music career managing Todd Rundgren’s first band, Woody’s Truck Stop, in Philadelphia, and then moved to New York at the urging of Todd who was by then being managed by the legendary Albert Grossman, Bearsville Records founder, and manager of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, etc. Paul was instrumental in making the Runt song “We Gotta Get You A Woman,” (a song penned and recorded by Todd, about Paul), the first hit for Bearsville. Within two years he was elevated to President and Co-Owner of the label, a joint venture with Warner Bros. He oversaw development of Todd, Foghat, and others who achieved multi-platinum success.
Tony Stevens was the bass player for the band Foghat. in 1971 Bearsville Records founder Albert Grossman brought Foghat into a recording studio to lay down some initial tracks with producer Todd Rundgren. Unfortunately, the pairing didn't pan out and the effort was scrapped, although some of the tracks that Rundgren recorded with the group were included on their debut album.
Jean-Yves Labat de Rossi (aka M. Frog and M. Frog Labat,) referred to as "an experimental musician living in Woodstock," was Todd Rundgren's synthesist on the first Utopia album. M. Frog, his only solo release, came out on Albert Grossman's Bearsville label in 1973.
