Celebrate the 55th anniversary of the seminal album "Deja Vu" from CSNY with Matt Plummer and some other great Local 518 musicians who are coming together to highlight this amazing album.
For this episode we're joined – all the way from L.A. – by special guest Bob Merlis. The former head of publicity at Warner-Reprise Records in Burbank talks us through his musical odyssey from his Brooklyn childhood to his continuing PR work for the likes of ZZ Top and Carlene Carter. We hear about Bob's start at Record World in late '60s New York and the early '70s pieces he wrote for that trade publication and for Warners' short-lived Words & Music. Our guest then talks about his brief stints at RCA and Albert Grossman's Bearsville Records before touching on key acts and moments in the nearly three decades he spent in Burbank: Little Feat's Lowell George, Jerry Wexler producing Etta James and Warners president Joe Smith roasting the infamous Morris Levy. Clips from Dave Zimmer's 1988 audio interview with Neil Young prompt discussion of that quintessential Reprise artist (and his comrades in CSNY). After Mark quotes from pieces about Elektra Records dropping the MC5 and free-improv guitarist Derek Bailey, Jasper talks us out with reflections on the musical passions of footballer Rio Ferdinand and Houston rapper Chamillionaire. Many thanks to special guest Bob Merlis. For info on Bob's PR work, visit https://mfhpr.com/m-f-h-at-20. Pieces discussed: R&B is B(l)ack and Involved, Jerry Wexler Crosses Tracks for Tony Joe, Todd Rundgren Warps Time, Lowell George Talks About Little Feat, Little Feat Keeps On Truckin', Little Feat: How To Construct a "Critics' Band", Neil Young audio, Elektra Records Kicks Out MC5, Derek Bailey: Themes on Improvisation, The Record Doctor: Rio Ferdinand and Chamillionaire: Change.
Buffalo Springfield -Again (Atco) Released October 30, 1967, and Recorded January 9-September 18 Buffalo Springfield Again is a landmark album that captures both the brilliance and dysfunction of one of rock's most influential short-lived bands. Recorded during a turbulent period marked by Neil Young's departures, Bruce Palmer's deportation, and rising tensions within the group, the album still delivers remarkable artistry. Each member shines: Stephen Stills' dynamic guitar work and songwriting drive tracks like “Bluebird,” Neil Young brings depth and experimentation with “Mr. Soul” and the ambitious “Broken Arrow.” At the same time, Richie Furay adds warmth and a country-rock flavor with “A Child's Claim to Fame” and “Sad Memory.” Despite its fragmented nature, the album's eclectic sound helped define the era. Though it only reached #44 on the charts, its critical reputation has grown over time. Following the release of the album, internal struggles led to the band's breakup, but its members went on to shape the folk and country rock genres through groups like CSNY and Poco. This record remains a vital, underrated piece of 1960s rock history.Signature Songs: "Mr Soul," "Bluebird" "Broken Arrow"Full Album YouTube, Spotify Playlist YouTube Spotify

Guess who was behind hits like the Turtles' "Happy Together" or CSN&Y's "Ohio?" It was renowned drummer Johny Barbata who sadly passed away unexpectedly last month. Johny's extraordinary talent and versatility made him a pivotal figure in rock and pop music. Starting his career in the 1960s, Johny first gained prominence as a member of The Turtles, where his dynamic drumming powered hits like "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be With Me." His innovative style and rhythmic precision caught the attention of major bands and artists, leading him to join Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, where he contributed to their classic live album "4 Way Street." In the 70s, Johny's career soared even higher when he became the drummer for Jefferson Airplane, later transitioning to Jefferson Starship. His powerful beats and creative percussion were instrumental in shaping the band's sound on iconic tracks like "Volunteers" and "Miracles." Throughout his career, Johny Barbata's drumming was characterised by its technical proficiency, adaptability across genres, and ability to enhance the music's emotional impact. John's influence extended beyond his performances; he was also a mentor and inspiration to countless drummers. His autobiography, "The Legendary Life of a Rock Star Drummer," offers an in-depth look at his journey through the highs and lows of the music industry. Despite facing numerous challenges, including a serious car accident, Barbata's resilience and passion for music kept him active in the industry until the day he died. Johny Barbata continues to be celebrated as one of rock's greatest drummers, known for his contributions to some of the most memorable songs in music history. His legacy is marked by his unique ability to blend technical skill with expressive artistry, leaving an indelible mark on every band he ever played with. This week, I'm honouring the late Johny Barbata by featuring a recent interview we did together. During our conversation he sheds light on what it was like to be a famous rock star and how in demand he constantly was as a session drummer. Artists like Jackson Browne, Linda Rondstadt and Neil Young couldn't get enough of him. Find out why by listening to him tell his story. If you'd like to know more about the life and times of Johny Barbata, pick yourself up a copy of his book Johnt Barbata- The Legendary Life of a Rock Star Drummer - available from Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/Johny-Barbata-Legendary-Life-Drummer/dp/7774585796 I hope you enjoy the celebration of John's life and music. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sandy-kaye3/message

Episode 130: Another Hour Of Great Tunes From The 60s & 70s (As I Say, "Mostly") February 15, 2024 There's a tradition here at TVT to try not to repeat any tunes. Unsuccessful I've been but if I do repeat, there's a high quality put on a number. That's why we start out with two from Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die LP. It is a very cool musical masterpiece. And you'll also hear Link Wray, Tracy Nelson, John Kongos and more. The ever-so-popular JIMJAM today is CSNY's Teach Your Children, soon, so get ready for TVT! There are many podcast apps that carry Tales Vinyl Tells, like my feed site that sends TVT out to the universe, Podbean.com, Apple, Player FM and others. Of course, our flagship, if you will, is Linda's StudioMillsWellness.com, where we first posted the podcasts in Dec. 2019. You could also stream TVT live at 5 Central time at RadioFreeNashville.org. In fact, you should listen to them often and send some financial support their way too. Here's a quote from Rolling Stone magazine: “A supergroup is a very fragile thing. Rock bands are always about balancing huge egos, but when those egos are oversized from the get-go it can lead to huge problems. That's why supergroups like Blind Faith often fail to go beyond a single album, and why long-lasting ones like CSNY had drama that never seemed to end.” Hmmm … that's apropos because, turns out, super ACOs (accountable care organizations) may have some similar issues. A super ACO means multiple ACOs or CINs (clinically integrated networks) which are each comprised of multiple practices or provider organizations, and it's all under different ownership. Said another way, there are multiple levels of competitors—frenemies, if you will—trying to work together or not work together as the case may be. There's a lot of infrastructure complexity and process complexity and, frankly, inefficiency. There's trust issues. There's the problem that rule #1 of change management is to create “quick wins” so that everyone can smell potential success and realize it's possible, so momentum happens. But if doing anything is hyper-complicated, then it's really tough to have a quick win. Today in this summer short, this is what I am chatting about with Eric Gallagher. We talk about how Ochsner evolved from a super ACO or super CIN into its current form. This summer short is a 13-minute clip that went a little far afield from the main topic of episode 405, which was the full episode with Eric Gallagher, and therefore, I cut it. But as I always do when I cut an actually pretty great section from a show for reasons of time, I have been on the edge of my seat to share it with you. This show is actually a very nice follow-on to the one with Dan Serrano (EP410) from last week. As Eric describes Ochsner's history and its path forward, it is a case study of some of the recommendations that Dan mentioned. This summer short also really echoes some of the themes in episode 409, which was the one with Larry Bauer, and also one upcoming with Jodilyn Owen. What will work in one local market, don't count on it working elsewhere—or not work as well at a minimum. Healthcare is local. This is a lesson many investors and entrepreneurs looking for rapid scaling prototypes have learned the hard way, and listening to Eric, it's really easy to catch the why for that. If this topic intrigues you, also listen to the show with Dr. Amy Scanlan (EP402). Also episode 349 with Lisa Trumble. And lastly, I would recommend the show with David Carmouche, MD (EP343). Dr. Carmouche was talking about Ochsner's work improving patient outcomes with a Medicare Advantage plan. One final note/point to ponder: scale. To really get value-based contracts, you need it. You need it to afford the infrastructure, and you need it to demand a seat at the table. But yeah with that … everything in moderation, I guess, because any scale that starts to approach monopoly proportions seems to invite bad behavior. You have to get big enough to matter in the market but not so big that your big footprint squashes market dynamics, because it seems like many succumb to the siren song at that point of putting profits over patients. You can learn more at Ochsner Health Network. Eric Gallagher, chief executive officer for Ochsner Health Network (OHN), is responsible for directing network and population health strategy and operations, including oversight of performance management operations, population health and care management programs, value-based analytics, OHN network development and administration, strategic program management, and marketing and communications. Prior to joining Ochsner in 2016, Eric held leadership positions in healthcare strategy and execution—including roles at Accenture, Tulane University Health System, and Vanderbilt University and Medical Center. A New Orleans native, Eric earned a bachelor's degree in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from Tulane University. 04:23 How Ochsner Health went from a super ACO to their current value-based care model. 06:09 What signs did Ochsner Health see that helped them recognize that the clinically integrated networks they were building wouldn't help them achieve the outcomes goals they were aiming for? 07:42 Why Ochsner Health's story is a classic example of change management. 08:41 What tough decision did Ochsner Health have to make that's ultimately led to much higher success rates? 10:46 “Really … it's about changing the economic model.” 11:03 Why was CMS a driver of change? 13:00 What's the more sustainable business model in Ochsner Health's market? 15:09 How has Ochsner Health been ahead of the game in the healthcare market? From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, there was a large counterculture movement in the United States. It was a time when the war in Vietnam was escalating and there was vast social tension in society overall. But it was also a time of free love, experimentation, alternative lifestyles, and some terrific music! It was from an area just outside of Los Angeles, California – an area known as Laurel Canyon – that Rock and Roll's first supergroup arose: Crosby, Still, Nash & Young. Indie recording artist Jon Tyler Wiley joins Team Derringer as they debate when and where the founding members of CSN first lifted their voices in harmony. Listen in as Laura, Paul, Alton, and Dave pick their favorite CSNY band member and share their favorite songs written by David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and/or Neil Young. Today's special guest will even provide you with a musical treat you're sure to love. Relix Magazine Publisher and New York music promotor Peter Shapiro shares a special voicemail from the late great David Crosby of CSNY and discusses touring with the Grateful Dead, what's it like voting in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and more over bourbon. Peter Shapiro Bio Peter Shapiro is a veteran concert promoter whose signature achievements over the past two decades have included Wetlands Preserve, Brooklyn Bowl, the Capitol Theatre, the Lockn' festival, U2 3D, the Jammy Awards, and Fare Thee Well, the 2015 concert event in which he reunited the "core four" members of the Grateful Dead alongside Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio for a record-breaking run of stadium shows. More recently, Shapiro founded Lockn', a music and camping festival that draws 30,000 music fans to Arrington, VA, as well as Jazz & Colors, an experiential event that he has produced in Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Chicago's Field Museum. Shapiro also created the Green Apple Festival (which took place simultaneously across eight cities) along with the Jammy Awards. He served as a producer on the We Are One inaugural concert and later returned to the National Mall to oversee Earth Day 40th anniversary celebration, the Women's March and the March for Science.
Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond
Today we have the second part of Rick Rubin's conversation with legendary singer/songwriter Graham Nash. We dropped part one a couple of weeks ago, so definitely go check that out if you haven't already. On today's episode Graham tells Rick about the time the Grateful Dead were recording next to CSNY and how Jerry Garcia improvised a near-perfect pedal steel solo on “Teach Your Children.” Graham also describes a bizarre encounter with the judge who sentenced his father to prison, and he shares the inspiration behind his new solo album, Now. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond
At 81 years-old, Graham Nash describes his life as, “a magic story from beginning to end.” Graham's career began in 1962 as a singer/songwriter in the British pop band The Hollies. After a string of hits in the UK, Graham left the Hollies, and moved to L.A. to start a band with the former Byrds vocalist, David Crosby, and Stephen Stills, whose band Buffalo Springfield had just broken up. From the start, Crosby Stills & Nash were dubbed a folk-rock supergroup, and they went on to become one of the era's most revered bands, thanks to their gorgeous three-part harmony and exquisite songwriting. Following the death of David Crosby in January, Rick Rubin sat down with Graham Nash to talk about Graham's deep love and admiration for Croz. On today's episode we'll hear the first part of Rick's conversation with Graham, who reminisces about the day he met Crosby, who immediately rolled Graham the most perfect joint he'd ever seen. Graham also explains how it was actually Cass Elliot from the Mamas and the Papas who was responsible for bringing CSN together, and he recalls classic stories about Neil Young's unpredictable early days in CSNY. Join your host Steve Yusko as we discover Ryan David Orr. He was born in Ashland, Oregon to a singer-songwriter mother and a visual artist father. His childhood, which took place between Oregon and California, and later Tennessee and North Carolina, were surrounded by art, music, writing, and the adventures of rural living. At the age of 7, he began playing violin and singing in choirs, subsequently being recruited for several performance opportunities including a long run of the opera Tosca and the Northwest Children's Honor Choir. His love of music and performance blossomed with the later move to the American south. His mother, a country and folk songwriter, hoped that proximity to Nashville would be beneficial to her musical career. She recorded several albums, giving Ryan his first taste of being “in the studio”. For Ryan, there are too many influences and inspirations to list all of them in one place, but his background in the performing and visual arts began to take form during his high school years, when he put down the violin and picked up guitar. He immersed himself in a plethora of musical styles and genres. He spun old classic rock vinyls he found in record store bargain bins. He kept a constant flow of music going for most of his waking hours, devouring everything from Neil Young to Radiohead, Mos Def to Deftones, Beethoven to RL Burnside. He was greatly influenced by the Seattle grunge sound, modeling much of his first song writing attempts after bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. Most of what he wrote at first wasn't very good, but over time he began to shape and define his own voice. He continued absorbing artists like Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Whiskeytown, Thelonious Monk, Richard Buckner, Bjork, Massive Attack, Cat Stevens, and CSNY. Awards/Accolades: Best Folk Album International – Toronto Exclusive Magazine (2007) Finalist – Song of the Year songwriting competition Runner-up – Song of the Year songwriting competition Best Music Video – Show Low Film Festival (2018) Best Music Video - White Mountains Film Festival (2022) Best Music Video - Switzerland International Film Festival "Great, distinctive voice...worthy of top marks" -Stuart Epps, producer (Oasis, Elton John, Led Zeppelin) Another artistic love of Ryan's is in the arena of film and photography. He holds a degree in Film and Media Studies from Arizona State University, and began putting his film knowledge to use in 2013 when he wrote, directed, and filmed a music video for the song "Margaret" from his album More Than Strangers. Since then, he has written, directed, and/or filmed several more music videos to accompany songs from his various albums. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelongislandsoundpodcast/message
