Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Chris Beresford-Hill is the Worldwide Chief Creative Officer at BBDO. Previously he spent 2 years as North America President and CCO of Ogilvy, where he helped bring the agency and its clients a new level of relevance. He brought Workday to the Super Bowl, led the team that brought in the Verizon account, and one of the biggest Super Bowl campaigns ever, “Can't B Broken,” featuring Beyonce, and created the most celebrated Super Bowl campaign of 2024, the social & influencer lead "Michael CeraVe," for CeraVe. Chris and his teams have won every award for creativity and effectiveness many times over. He has been included in ADWEEK Best Creatives, the ADWEEK 100, and Business Insider's Most Creative People in Advertising. Notes: Cold Emails: Be specific in your praise and specific in your ask. The lame "Can I pick your brain" type emails get deleted and ignored because they aren't specific. You never need permission to take responsibility. Chris learned this from Ed Catmull's book Creativity Inc.… And he's embodied this his entire career. The people who build huge careers take ownership of their own and regularly solve problems and improve their clients' and colleagues' lives. Chris has done this since his early days as an intern. At any level taking on responsibility yourself, unasked, makes you stand out. Competence combined with insane follow-through. For some clients, it takes 50 ideas to get to the one that will work. Creating a culture where the team can share all of their bad ideas safely to get to the one great one. The creative process: Brain dump everything. Purge your brain of everything it has. When you think you're done, you're not. There's more. You have to get it all out. "A lot of creative people aren't fully aware of the process or the structure, they just feel it (Rick Rubin). "When you can see it lift off the page, you feel a sense of mastery over it." Chris's first Super Bowl commercial -- Emerald Nuts. He won it because he was both funny and added the fact that the product provided energy. Most people only covered one part, Chris did both. Push your edges - Chris is like Lionel Messi. He's always walking around in the office, asking questions, looking for ideas, being curious. Then he sees an opportunity and goes for it 100%. Chris has a standing reservation every week at the same restaurant where he meets with a mentor, mentee, or peer to deepen the important relationships in his life. That would be a good idea for us all to do. Chris was pen-pals with Dave Matthews for 8 years.  Chris saw that they recorded at Bearsville studios and wrote a letter to Dave there. He also said, "Show up with gifts." He gave Dave a Beatles Bootlegged album. A leader takes what comes and then turns it into an opportunity. The formula is Competence + Insane Follow-Through. How to build relationships: Meet with people in person. Get drunk with them. Do hard work with them. Go through something bad with them. Laugh with them. I got hired from my internship by cold calling Mark Cuban to get him to approve of using his name in an ad. The best ideas are often bad in their first moments, or massively wrong, and then someone flips it or unlocks it. You have to stay on things and play around. I made my first ad by going through a garbage can to learn how to write a script and sending a bunch of Budweiser scripts to my boss. The art of finding an idea on the edge of possible, and the value of going over your skis when on the cusp of greatness - having a stomach for it. I've told a lie to keep things moving on every great campaign I was part of. I learned the best lesson in leadership when we lost our biggest account (Accenture).  I put Danny Meyer's mentality into practice, and we took that moment to put the business and clients second and play for each other. Culture carried us. Culture is built by the stories we tell and the behaviors we highlight.

Extrait : « …

In this episode we welcome the truly legendary Pamela Des Barres, all the way from her native San Fernando Valley, and invite her to reminisce about the all-girl GTOs, Frank Zappa, Lowell George... and plenty more besides. The bestselling author of 1987's groupie confessional I'm With The Band describes how she entered the Laurel Canyon orbit of ringmaster Zappa, and how the motley troupe he christened Girls Together Outrageously came into being. The former Miss Pamela talks about her fellow "Misses" Mercy and Christine, then describes the sessions for the group's unruly 1969 classic Permanent Damage. This leads on to a discussion of the Groupie phenomenon and its problematic nature in the #MeToo era. In passing, we hear about Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco and 1974's Hollywood Street Revival and Trash Dance show. The somewhat different — yet not entirely unrelated — L.A. domain of the canyon singer-songwriter crowd is considered as we hear clips from co-host Barney Hoskyns' 2003 audio interview with James Taylor/Linda Ronstadt producer Peter Asher. Following discussion of Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell and their mutual paramour John David Souther, we circle back to the GTOs and the guest appearance of the late Jeff Beck on Permanent Damage. We then pay extensive tribute to Beck's eclectic genius and unique technique. We conclude with quotes from notable RBP library additions, including pieces about Bonnie Raitt recording at Bearsville, L.A. session bassist Carol Kaye and apocalyptic jazz trio Comet Is Coming. Many thanks to special guest Pamela Des Barres. Visit her website at pameladesbarresofficial.com for details of her podcast, books and more. We Hate They Might Be Giants!...For making such a great album in 1994 named John Henry! IT'S TOO GREAT! Welcome to part 1 of our John Henry Prestige Limited Series. Before getting to the songs, Jordan and Dave (with backup from archival audio of John and John!) get into a discussion that's even longer than the entire album all about the changing music scene in 1994, TMBG's experience recording John Henry in Bearsville, New York, and their clashes with Elektra Records. We also discuss the album's sequence, title, and album art. Joining us for an incredibly fun and revealing album art discussion about halfway through the episode is our very special guest, SCARLET KIM, one of the little John Henry rascals from the album art (holding the skull on the back, the cover of the Back to Skull EP, and more!) After reminiscing with Scarlet about that eventful day in Central Park, Jordan and Dave talk about SONGS! We stare into the Subliminal for as long as we can! We notice something about car crashes, dreams, and the subtle (subliminal???) but effective arrangement of the opening track! We slooooowly but eventually get to consider Snail Shell, the slimy and strange single. We debate Linnell's intention behind the song, and we also talk about...well, snails, of course, in a brand new segment called Snail Tell: all snail stories, all the time. Today's episode is Part Two of my conversation with Todd Anderson of The Dear Misses. Todd and I discuss the seminal third album "The Artist in the Ambulance" by Thrice. Thrice signed with a major label in 2002 after the unexpected success of their second album "The Illusion of Safety". The album garnered the band critical and fan praise. We talk about the themes of the record, as well as how the record has stood the test of time. We talk about how Thrice chose to go a different direction from many of their contemporaries at the time. The lyrics and themes of the record tackle heavy subjects like third world oppression, seeking knowledge and truth, political theatrics, and the information age. We had a great time chatting about this important album, and how it helped to shape and define a genre. Enjoy! The Artist in the Ambulance is the third studio album by American rock band Thrice. It was released on July 22, 2003, through Island Records, marking their first release on a major label. They released their second studio album The Illusion of Safety in March 2002; by July of that year, they were writing material for their next album. Recording sessions were held at Salad Days Studios in Beltsville, Maryland, Bearsville Studios in Bearsville, New York and Phase Studios in College Park, Maryland with producer Brian McTernan. The Artist in the Ambulance is an melodic hardcore and post-hardcore album that has been compared to the world of Blindside. Preceded by a tours of the United States and Europe (the latter as part of the Deconstruction Tour), "All That's Left" was released as the lead single from The Artist in the Ambulance. Thrice appeared briefly on Warped Tour, before "Under a Killing Moon" was released on a split 7" vinyl single with a track by Thursday. They appeared at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in the United Kingdom, before embarking on a European tour supporting co-headliners Rancid and Alkaline Trio. My guest today is a lover, leader and life giver of music. The decisions that he makes correlate to art and relationships because you must have intimate relationships with cats to make real music. Cats like Dino Danelli who came up playing swing music with the likes of Lionel Hampton. My guest was part of The Rascals. A rock quarter that produced jukebox hits that the ladies could bob their heads too. The group was deeper then their pop hits. The messages within their music spoke of justice for all, seeing black musicians and Latin musicians being treated poorly, demanding integration at their concerts, knowing their limitations and winding up in some Orgy following a late set @ the Port Chester Theatre. After the calliopes have left the circus you are left with your own island of real. Not the kind of island you see on TV. Commercials rather one where the animals walk freely amongst the bush and a swirling Hammond organ drum bands are burning there way from Las Vegas to Bearsville. My guest has collaborated with the most visceral musicians on the planet. Play from your guts, leave it out in a dream with Steve Cropper or Chuck Rainey, Alice Coltrane and Buzzy Fieton. My guest understood the value of the accompanist and the session cats in order for the rascals to play world music. I thought Blue Eyed Soul came from Boz Scaggs but in fact it was this group that fostered the name. A dainty polite way to say that these cats were most influenced by race records, African Roots Music and The Shea Stadium Scoreboard. They were not interested in competing with the British Invaders original material but rather leaned on their own experiences which are rooted in rhythm and blues and northern soul with a blend of symphonic My guest adapted to changing times in both personnel and within the industry knowing the cats who could help the group sound full. He also took on the burgeoning use of technology using the moog and Arp to create cosmic waves of consciousness within the ears of the listener. My guest channeled his intensity through meditation which most likely saved him from the webs of stardom. He knows its easy to kick a rock down 26 flights of stairs then to walk a boulder up from the bottom. To look yourself in the mirror and detest what you see but instead of wallowing in self pity you find little creases and crevices and family and soul to improve yourself and make that mirror become a Peaceful World. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Coming by it honestly, David’s father, Kenny Kalmusky. was one of the original band members of “The Hawks” with Levon Helm, Richard Manuel, & John Till in 1958. Kenny went on to make records at Bearsville studios in Woodstock NY, and Nashville TN in the late 60’s with the likes of Ian & Sylvia, Todd Rundgren, Cowboy Jack Clement, Ronnie Hawkins, Jerry Reed, and many others. Hello….it’s Love That Album. Todd Rundgren must have shares in a millinery, because he wears a lot of hats. Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, video producer, (it can be argued) comedian…….He doesn’t do anything by half-measures. Rundgren started his recording career with rock group Nazz in the late 60s, then branched out to work as a producer for Bearsville Records when he found out he was unhappy with other producers’ work. He’s responsible for a multitude of records as producer / engineer for the likes of The Tubes, The Band, Cheap Trick, and ummmm……Meatloaf.   He started a run of his own records at Bearsville with 1970’s Runt establishing a very Rundgren-esque sound. For this episode of the podcast, I am joined by film blogger Kerry Gately Fristoe to talk about his third album, “Something / Anything.” How many other artists would release a double-album of diverse studio material that early in their career? With 3 sides of the album featuring the one musician playing every instrument….really well?   Kerry and I talk about all manner of things around this album including arson, venereal diseases, Vikings, and zits…..as well as the less common subject matter from songwriters of love and heartbreak. We took some diversions (as is this show’s modus operandi), but in hindsight, not nearly enough.   A huge thank you goes to Kerry for being such a great co-host for this one.   You can download the show from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”) or from the website at http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com.   Kerry’s excellent film-blog can be found at http://prowlerneedsajump.wordpress.com   Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum.   If you’d consider writing an iTunes review or recommending the show to a friend, we’d be immensely grateful.   If you enjoy what you hear, please tell a friend or ten to tune in.

Happy February to you all! Everyone seems to be on edge lately due to the new president and the strange weather patterns moving their way across the United States, so what better way to turn off your brain and relax than a brand new episode of Random Old Records! I've already broken my resolution of putting these out on time, but hopefully the quality of this one will keep you listening!EPISODE #58 kicks off with the hard funk of The Jimmy Castor Bunch, and flows into some rare grooves by Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces and Universal Togetherness Band, then drops in a brand new track from Foxygen, one of the best bands going right now in my opinion. They have dialed back the experimentation of their previous LP ...And Star Power and replaced it with lush arrangements and a bombastic Disney/Broadway vibe on the killer track "Follow The Leader". DEFINITELY go pick up the new record Hang when you get a chance! Then, we go deeper into the land of Southern Soul and heavy horn and string arrangements with some classics from Stax and Bobbie Gentry, and some more kickin' country rock from New Riders Of The Purple Sage and Sir Douglas (country rock has been my JAM as of late!). We then come back to the present and finish up with some dreamy jangle from the Liminanas, Chook Race, and Shantih Shantih. All in all, it's a full sixty minutes and two seconds of great music to calm your shattered nerves and give you a little peace of mind. Foghat began their career in 1971 as a bunch of rather unpretentious young Brits with an affection for American blues and '50s rock 'n' roll. By the middle of the decade, they had evolved into a major touring and recording act, playing a pumped-up brand of boogie-rock to arena-size audiences. Their looks grew flashier, their sound fattened and filled out, yet the roots-rock core of the band remained ever-present under the surface. From the viewpoint of certain critics, Foghat unduly compromised their early blues-based approach in order to reap commercial rewards. Certainly, their mid-'70s hits ("Slow Ride," "Drivin' Wheel," "Stone Blue") were not aimed at the rock purists of the world. But it's also true that they continued to record traditional blues and R&B material throughout their years with Bearsville Records. In fact, Foghat's final albums on Bearsville reaffirmed their love for unadulterated, primal American music. The band latest Album, "Under The Influence" is as classic as the band itself! Slacker sits down with Roger Earl and Brian Bassett. #Foghat

Martin talks to author Barney Hoskyns about his new book Small Town Talk: Bob Dylan, The Band, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock. Think "Woodstock" and the mind turns to the seminal 1969 festival that crowned a seismic decade of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. But the town of Woodstock, New York, the original planned venue of the concert, is located over 60 miles from the site to which the fabled half a million flocked. Long before the landmark music festival usurped the name, Woodstock—the tiny Catskills town where Bob Dylan holed up after his infamous 1966 motorcycle accident—was already a key location in the '60s rock landscape. In Small Town Talk, Barney Hoskyns re-creates Woodstock's community of brilliant dysfunctional musicians, scheming dealers, and opportunistic hippie capitalists drawn to the area by Dylan and his sidekicks from the Band. Central to the book's narrative is the broodingly powerful presence of Albert Grossman, manager of Dylan, the Band, Janis Joplin, Paul Butterfield, and Todd Rundgren—and the Big Daddy of a personal fiefdom in Bearsville that encompassed studios, restaurants, and his own record label. Intertwined in the story are the Woodstock experiences and associations of artists as diverse as Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Tim Hardin, Karen Dalton, and Bobby Charles (whose immortal song-portrait of Woodstock gives the book its title). Drawing on numerous first-hand interviews with the remaining key players in the scene—and on the period when he lived there himself in the 1990s—Hoskyns has produced an East Coast companion to his bestselling L.A. canyon classic Hotel California. This book is a richly absorbing study of a vital music scene in a revolutionary time and place. The interview was recorded on April 4, 2016.

In Part 2 of this special edition of Retrosonic Podcast we are very pleased to welcome back Harley Feinstein, the original drummer with Sparks. Harley appeared on the band's first two Bearsville Records albums "Halfnelson/Sparks" and "A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing", and their very first visit to the UK back in the early Seventies. In the previous Episode Harley told us about how he first met Ron and Russell Mael and joined the band. Now in Part 2, Harley talks about the band's first experiences in a studio with Todd Rundgren and James Lowe of The Electric Prunes and how a notorious bunch of Groupies contributed to them getting signed to Bob Dylan's manager's record label. This introduces the band to the nefarious world of the music business with it's aggressive managers and pressure to "make it". There's the enforced name change from Halfnelson to Sparks and we discover some of the hilarious, and slightly worrying, alternate names that the band might have been lumbered with. We follow the band to England and their first TV appearance on Old Grey Whistle Test and sold-out gig at the Marquee and residency at The Pheasantry and the taste of what can be achieved on record company expenses. We then find out how an ill-fated trip to Zermatt in Switzerland became the final nail in the coffin for the band at that time. Soundtracked by early Sparks songs including material from their original demo album, this is a fascinating tale of Sparks' formative years. For more information on Harley's new project Crash 74 and their gig in London, including exclusive Paul Slattery photographs, please visit www.retromanblog.com

Paul began his music career managing Todd Rundgren’s first band, Woody’s Truck Stop, in Philadelphia, and then moved to New York at the urging of Todd who was by then being managed by the legendary Albert Grossman, Bearsville Records founder, and manager of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, etc. Paul was instrumental in making the Runt song “We Gotta Get You A Woman,” (a song penned and recorded by Todd, about Paul), the first hit for Bearsville. Within two years he was elevated to President and Co-Owner of the label, a joint venture with Warner Bros. He oversaw development of Todd, Foghat, and others who achieved multi-platinum success.

"The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not 'Eureka!' but 'That's funny...'"-Isaac AsimovA magician calls a man up on stage, hands him a mallet and instructs the guy to hit him as hard as possible on the head. The magician then proceeds to put his head down on a wooden block. The man shrugs his shoulders and takes a mighty swing.Three years later, the magician wakes up from a coma in the hospital and goes..."Taa-Daa!""How does it change many dyslexics to take a lightbulb?"Go back up to the previous one-liner and reread it word by word.I’m putting this joke in not because it’s overly funny but because I think that I’ve actually done this. Two IT guys were talking in a bar after work."Guess what," says the first IT guy, "yesterday, I met this gorgeous blonde in a bar.""What did you do?" says the other IT guy."Well, I invited her over to my place, we had a couple of drinks, we got into the mood and then she suddenly asked me to take all her clothes off.""You're kidding me!" says the second IT guy."I took her miniskirt off, and then I lifted her and put her on my desk next to my new laptop.""Really? You got a new laptop?"I was looking stuff up online when I found this on the CDC (center for Disease control) website:“All persons who are obese or overweight should try not to gain additional weight. In addition, those who are obese or who are overweight with other risk factors should consider losing weight.”“Bill Fabrey, co-owner of Amplestuff in Bearsville, N.Y., has been thinking big since 1988, when he started his mail-order business specializing in products for the larger set.”FMC Note: PEOPLE ARE NOT “LARGE SET.” Large Set is something used to describe your baseball card collection."Quantas Problem Solving"After every flight, Qantas' pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet" which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. Where I don't see one"A: "HEY WHO DRANK HALF THE WATER!"FMC solution to the Pot Problem:I recently came up with the prefect solution to the marijuana problem. For those of you with no clue what the problem with pot is we're in the same boat. But apparently some people think it's addictive. Well, so is smoking, porn, alcohol, porn, smoking, gambling, TV, smoking, the internet, eating, alcohol and porn, but only 2 of those thing kills people directly AND indirectly. And I got news for you - they all can ruin lives but chances are if when you step up and spin that addiction wheel and it lands on pot it could have just as easily been alcohol, or heroin. Some people say it's a gateway drug and if you are one of those people please grab your mouse wrap it tightly around your neck and pull both ends until you reach a happy place. Alcohol is a gateway drug I'm betting way before pot, do you know anyone that tried pot with out going through a drinking phase?...I’M WAITING….of course you didn't! Anyways, my plan is fines. This solves a lot of problems.1) I didn't make it legal so it's against the law to posses, sell, and smoke it. So that makes the anti-drug people happy.2) More money for the government. That makes the government happy.3) It's moving along the path to be legal, which makes intelligent people happy, AND4) Less people in jail. (Which makes everyone happy). We could have fines for smoking, selling and possessing, and if your carrying more than a pound of the stuff on you everything gets seized and police are free to test it and resell it, and thus making more money for the local law enforcement and probably increase the number of police officers. Can we please get this done and move onto more important things?
