My long-time friend, Peter Scott Ruben, is the best guitar player I know, having personally watched him jam with some of the great rock and blues musicians of the seventies (Joe Perry in his pre-Aerosmith days and Kim Simmonds of The Savoy Brown Blues Band are two who immediately come to mind -- I read that Simmonds died two years ago in England and the band had to break up after an amazing fifty-five year run). Since then, Peter has fronted his own bands, and has also carried on his father's legacy as leader of the premier special events orchestra/band in Philadelphia, through which he met "the great one," Frank Sinatra, at a White House gig the orchestra was playing during the Reagan administration back in the 1980's. He also donned a wig a few years ago and played as Eric Clapton in a Cream tribute concert (and I seem to recall he even played a set as Jimmi Hendrix). In addition to his amazing playing, he knows way more about music than anyone in my social orbit so, now that he has embarked on an Act 3 career performing a Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin one-man tribute show (having bought performing rights to the original Nelson Riddle and other Sinatra/Darin charts), I thought it would be fun to pick his brain here on Pizza Quest regarding why he thinks Sinatra is the greatest performer of all time as well as to see if together we could create a top ten list as well as a Mt. Rushmore top four list of the greatest of the greats. It was so much fun recording this episode -- as you will see and hear -- that I plan on inviting him back to do a similar retrospective on the greatest guitar players and also another on the best bands and performing groups of our time. Peter and I used to stay up all night during our college days talking about stuff like this, so I know he's game for it, as you will hear in this conversation in which we explore not only Sinatra's greatness but also dive deeply into the why and how of what made him the GOAT (and why Bobby Darin was the prince in waiting until he died way too young). So, as we like to say, it's more about the quest than it is about the pizza, and this time around we jump into Peter Ruben's quest for what distinguishes the good from the great when it comes to musical artists. The topic may have changed, but the game remains the same -- and the quest never ends....

Hello everyone and welcome to the 426th episode of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Sonic Mojo is Foghat's highly anticipated and long-awaited 17th studio album—their first in seven years--on the band's label, Foghat Records, which is distributed by Select-O-Hits (part of the Sun Records family). On Sonic Mojo founding member, drummer and leader of the pack Roger Earl is joined by stalwart guitarist, engineer, and co-producer Bryan Bassett (formerly with Wild Cherry and Molly Hatchet), fun-loving bassist Rodney O'Quinn (longtime member of the Pat Travers Band), and on lead vocals and guitar, Scott Holt (who toured and recorded with the legendary Buddy Guy for 10+ years). The new album absolutely cements Foghat's title as the undisputed Kings of Boogie Rock as it showcases the band's trademark crunchy riffs, soaring slide guitar leads, infectious melodies, bluesy influences, and their take-no-prisoners approach to their loud, heavy, blues-rock that fans everywhere can't get enough of. Three songs on Sonic Mojo have special meaning for Roger Earl, as they were co-written by Simmonds, the man who gave Roger his first break back in 1967 as a member of Savoy Brown. Sadly, shortly after writing these songs, Kim passed away in December 2022. Foghat continue to release new music every few years, and are in constant motion on the road, maintaining a rigorous touring schedule that has been a staple of the band since its formation. Beth Riley chats with guitarist Bryan Bassett on this episode of Artist Spotlight Podcast Series. They chat about his influences, various bands he's been in (including Molly Hatchet and Wild Cherry). They talk about how he joined Foghat and their new album "Sonic Mojo"that was released on November 10, 2023. Bryan picks his favorite track off of the album and his favorite from his entire career. He also talks about the late Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown and his influence on Foghat and him personally. Of course, Beth had to talk about Jackson Browne and Bryan talks about his love of Jackson's songwriting. Bryan tells his favorite memories from each band he has been a part of, as well as talking about his time teaching in college and how difficult it was to answer to Professor Bassett. Current influences and bands that Bryan listens to are also on this episode. Beth mentions a surf band called Froghat and Bryan talks about a piece of Foghat merch that was a frog head made for babies to wear as a hat...making it a frog-hat. Lots of laughs on this one, and, as always, there's the time machine question and Bryan's desert island disc picks....all of that and so much more.

In the heart of the ‘Swinging Sixties', a British rock band called Savoy Brown was born and almost immediately began to make a profound impact with their pioneering blues-rock sound. Energetic Blues has always been Savoy Brown's calling card. In fact, Blues Rock became the catch-all phrase in the late 1960s to describe the band's music along with that of contemporaries including Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and Jimi Hendrix. Even though the band was plagued with a constantly changing line-up, the group's guiding hand from the outset in 1966 was held by its founder, the late Kim Simmonds. Unfortunately, Savoy Brown never reached the same level of commercial success as their contemporaries but despite this, they were a huge influence on the blues-rock genre, which led to their long-standing legacy in the industry. The band's discography is a testament to their enduring influence. Albums like "Shake Down," "Blue Matter," and "Street Corner Talking" showcased the band's exceptional song writing and instrumentals. Through the 60s, 70s and 80's songs such as “I'm Tired”, “Train to Nowhere”, “Tell Mama” and “Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone” became Hot 100 entries. Savoy Brown has always toured relentlessly, making it one of the longest running blues rock bands in existence. They also provided other groups opportunity. Kiss opened the bill on a Savoy Brown national tour as did ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers and many, many more acts. Former members, having cut their teeth under Simmonds' leadership, have gone on to complete their careers with other bands. Among others, these include singer Dave Walker with Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath, Bill Bruford with King Crimson and Andy Pyle with the Kinks. Savoy Brown helped spawn the 1968 UK Blues Rock boom and later opened the eyes of many 1970s American teenagers to their own home territory blues artists. Today, more than 50 years later, Savoy Brown remains a formidable, progressive Blues Rock force. As the band continues today without its leader, Kim Simmonds, who passed away late last year, it is led by my special guests – bassist PAT DESALVO and drummer GARNET GRIMM. Both have been in the line-up for more than 10 years. I hope you enjoy the amazing story that is SAVOY BROWN's musical journey. To learn more about the band head to their website https://savoybrown.com/biography Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you'd like to comment, provide feedback or suggest a future guest for the show. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Florida born Sean Chambers began his career in the Blues back in 1998 when he toured with the legendary Hubert Sumlin as his guitarist and band leader until 2003. During Sean's tenure with Mr. Sumlin, Britain's own Guitarist magazine named Chambers as “One of the top 50 blues guitarists of the last century.” In 2020, Chambers recorded "That's What I'm Talkin About" which is a tribute to his mentor, the late great Hubert Sumlin & was released on July 9th, 2021, on the Quarto Valley Record label. The album reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Blues Charts and received great accolades and rave reviews around the globe. Chambers became friends with the members of Savoy Brown after they played a festival together. When Savoy Brown's founder, Kim Simmonds, died in 2022, Chambers teamed up with bass player Pat De Salvo and drummer Garnet Grimm. Chambers and Savoy Brown recorded on the same label, they had the blessing of Kim Simmonds, and the move felt right. As a touring band, Sean Chambers takes guitar and vocals, Pat De Salvo takes bass and vocals, and Garnet Grimm takes drums and vocals. They continue to tour throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, although Chambers always returns to his home base in Florida. Savoy Brown was one of the longest-running bands of the British blues rock movement. Formed in 1965 by guitarist Kim Simmonds, the band enjoyed sold-out shows, and hit albums on the Billboard charts. The lineup changed, but Simmonds remained constant for 57 years, until his passing in December of 2022. At the time of his death, he had just completed his 42nd album, called Blues All Around. Now, that final word from Savoy Brown is being released through Quarto Valley Records. We welcome in the two remaining members of Savoy Brown, Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnet Grimm on drums. They talk about working with Simmonds while he was undergoing treatment; he was still giving instructions on how he wanted things to sound from the hospital. They also talk about how he had to adapt his way of playing guitar to accommodate his declining health. Pat and Garnet also reveal possible plans for even more unreleased Savoy Brown material.
Legendary British blues-rock band Savoy Brown have released a new album "Blues All Around" on Quarto Valley Records after the passing of acclaimed founder, Kim Simmonds. The album showcases Kim's most-inspired guitar work and expressive vocals, since his illness during the recording sessions lead him to play a great deal more slide guitar than on previous albums. On this episode of Big Blend Radio, Savoy Brown drummer Garnet Grimm and bass player Pat DeSalvo talk about their friendship and experiences performing and recording with Kim Simmonds, and the new album "Blues All Around." It was a pleasure to interview the last remaining members of the band, Savoy Brown, bassist Patrick DaSalvo and drummer Garnet Grimm.Visit Savoybrown.com to order their latest album and more The History of Savoy Brown Defining the British Blues Boom music scene in London in the mid ‘60'sThe British R ‘n‘ B boom of the early 1960's led directly to the British Blues Explosion in 1968.The London R n B boom led by, for example, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things and to some extent the Beatles quickly moved into mainstream pop and left a vacuum in the London clubs. This vacuum, in London, was filled in the mid 60's by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton and Savoy Brown's Blues Band featuring Kim Simmonds. Both these bands became headliners at major London clubs such as The Marquee establishing a “blues night” amongst the mainstream soul and popular music in the charts at that time. As headlining pioneers of the new blues movement Savoy Brown gave a platform to emerging bands in other areas of the U.K. Ten Years After and Jethro Tull both were opening acts to Savoy Brown on blues night at the Marquee.Chicken Shack from Birmingham also came to London and along with the early Fleetwood Mac established themselves on the scene.John Mayall, Savoy Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Chicken Shack and Ten Years After became the “big six” blues bands at that time.In fact a 45 single was released by The Liverpool Scene called “I've Got These Fleetwood Mac Chicken Shack John Mayall Can't Fail Blues” and the second chorus has Savoy Brown and Jethro Tull to round off the full song story.Hits soon followed for these bands (Savoy Brown cracking the USA in 1969) and the blues movement quickly gave way to the heavy rock of Black Sabbath, themselves a blues band when they started. The British Blues Boom was a phenomena never to be repeated again and remains one of the foremost U.K. music movements of all time.. Kim Simmonds formed Savoy Brown in 1965 and was one of the pioneers in the Blues Rock genre. The bands' heyday was in the early 1970's. Considered one of the premier guitarists, Kim and Savoy Brown have released nearly 50 albums throughout his career. In this tribute to Kim, who passed away on December 13, 2022, we reach back in our archives and share our April of 2007 interview with him. Award-winning program director Ray White talked with Kim about his Steel album, performing as a power trio and touring throughout the world. In our showcase segment, we pay tribute to guitar guru Jeff Beck, who unexpectedly passed away on January 10, 2023. A two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee - with The Yardbirds and as a solo artist, Jeff also won 8 Grammy awards during his illustrious career. On the Top 10 on most everyones "greatest guitarist of all-time" lists, Jeff's last album released before his death was titled 18, and was joined by his friend Johnny Depp. Legendary musicians, who come along just once in a lifetime - you'll find them on Classic Artists Today.

This is a special tribute show for the late Kim Simmonds, the guitarist and founder of the English Blues Rock band Savoy Brown. The show spotlights Kim's work in the 1960's with the band. The second half of the show focuses on Ian Anderson and his retro Rennaissance band Jethro Tull. The band was an early proponent and influence on the coming music movement that would be referred to as Progressive Rock. Both bands expanded on the blues with marvelous results. Please feel free to donate or Tip the show at sonictyme@yahoo.comPlease have a look at these special interest sites. If you would, please make a donation of love and hope to St. Jude Children's HospitalMake an impact on the lives of St. Jude kids - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org)Get your Vegan Collagen Gummies from Earth & Elle, available thru Amazon at this link.Amazon.com: Earth & Elle Vegan Collagen Gummies - Non-GMO Biotin Gummies, Vitamin A, E, C - Plant Based Collagen Supplements for Healthier Hair, Skin, Nails - 60 Chews of Orange Flavored Gummies, Made in USA : Health & HouseholdKathy Bushnell Website for Emily Muff bandHome | Kathy Bushnell | Em & MooListen to previous shows at the main webpage at:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1329053Pamela Des Barres Home page for books, autographs, clothing and online writing classes.Pamela Des Barres | The Official Website of the Legendary Groupie and Author (pameladesbarresofficial.com)Listen to more music by Laurie Larson at:Home | Shashké Music and Art (laurielarson.net)View the most amazing paintings by Marijke Koger-Dunham (Formally of the 1960's artists collective, "The Fool").Psychedelic, Visionary and Fantasy Art by Marijke Koger (marijkekogerart.com)For unique Candles have a look at Stardust Lady's Etsy shopWhere art and armor become one where gods are by TwistedByStardust (etsy.com)For your astrological chart reading, contact Astrologer Tisch Aitken at:https://www.facebook.com/AstrologerTisch/Tarot card readings by Kalinda available atThe Mythical Muse | FacebookEmma Bonner-Morgan Facebook music pageThe Music Of Emma Bonner-Morgan | FacebookFor booking Children's parties and character parties in the Los Angeles area contact Kalinda Gray at:https://www.facebook.com/wishingwellparties/I'm listed in Feedspot's "Top 10 Psychedelic Podcasts You Must Follow".

British bands became heavily influenced by American Blues artists that came out of Chicago, Mississippi and other rural areas of the south. The Rolling Stones always named their influences directly and began their career playing mostly blues covers. As the 60's progressed, other English bands took up the gauntlet of American blues music and played it louder and with a harder edge. The numbers were extended to showcase the techniques of guitarists like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, Paul Kossoff, Kim Simmonds, Jeff Beck and Alvin Lee. This was a new style that dominated the late 60's and continued to influence blues and hard rock bands in the 70's and beyond. Matt Schofield, Josh Smith, and Jeff McErlain talk about their Two-Rock Amplifiers, give tone tips, and perform. For more TrueFire Live sessions, check out https://truefire.com/liveAbout Matt:Though he holds a British passport and is an inductee of the British Blues Hall of Fame, Matt Schofield has been making his mark globally as one of the top players in the new class of six string wunderkinds. The Los Angeles Daily News wrote, In Schofield, the UK has produced the best Blues guitarist from any country in decades head and shoulders above the herd, while Guitar & Bass Magazine rated him in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time ranking him with icons Eric Clapton and Peter Green.Born in the industrial city of Manchester and raised amongst the rolling hills and locked in time Cotswolds, Schofield began playing guitar at the age of 12.My dad relocated to America, but before he left he gave me a BB King video. I watched it before school every day; it was three or four tracks from a concert. Later, when I was in California with my father, he showed me BB King with Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan on video. It was like; Ive got to do this. Theres something about the way the three of them were jamming. B.B. really was majestic. As an 11-or 12-year-old watching him, I was mesmerized but didnt think there was any way I could ever do that. It was too special. But when I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan playing with him, I thought maybe I could. Stevie made it seem accessible to people. I taught myself, working my way through my Dads great blues record collection. I did my first gig age 13, and Ive been doing it ever since. At age 18 he left the countryside and moved to London. There, as a sideman, he was able to hone his skills as backing a great variety of experienced and well known artists of the British Blues scene, visiting American artists, as well start touring internationally. The introspective, well read (lover of science, history and philosophy) and passionate Schofield said, this enabled me to stay close to my roots while learning my trade and exploring a variety of musical frontiers.By age 25 I was starting to explore my own band projects. Although my formative guitar influences are the largely the old school blues players, I never wanted my own music to be constrained by a rigid formula, or even genre. I just want to play Matt Schofield music. Classic Jazz, funk, soul and rock and all the music I love have all found their way into it. The process of writing and singing has become increasingly important to me, and I feel its those other aspects of creativity that helped define my own voice on the guitar. Its always been important to find a context for the guitar to be part of, so that its not just guitar solos for their own sake.I remain a music lover first and foremost. The recognition Ive received from both fans and peers is humbling and inspiring, and those pinch me moments where I found myself trading licks with heroes like Robben Ford and Buddy Guy are still the biggest thrill. Now after five studio albums and a solid 10 years of touring with my own band, I have definite broader concepts I want to explore. Remaining open to where the music might take me while maintaining the excitement that improvising and collaborating with talented musicians allow, is key to me. My inspiration and goals came from many places: My influences old and new, including musicians I have wanted to collaborate with for years. Things I still feel I hadn't fully realized on previous studio records, and a need to keep pushing myself. It all meets at the place where Im heading now. Im always aiming to go as far as possible to capturing the same connection with the listener that I aim to make at a live show or on record. Thats the goal. Capturing that special moment."About Josh:Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. Before he was 1, his family relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Pembroke Pines, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. At age 3, he received his first guitar and at 6, he started taking guitar lessons.Josh was exposed to the blues at an early age. He listened to a variety of artists, such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King and T-Bone Walker. He also started going to concerts, including the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.By 12, Josh was playing at established professional blues jams in South Florida, such as Musicians Exchange Café in Fort Lauderdale and Club M in Hollywood, FL.When Josh was 13, the Rhino Cats, house band at Club M, asked him to be the lead guitarist. Musicians Exchange owner Don Cohen was so taken aback by the talent of this young musician that he offered to help manage and develop Josh’s career. The Café was renowned for bringing in the best national touring blues bands, and Josh was quick to learn how to approach these blues greats, many of whom would invite Josh to sit in with them, thinking it may be a “novelty” to have a 14-year-old kid playing the blues. The novelty quickly wore off and was replaced by musicians stopping, watching and listening as this “kid” wailed out blues licks better than many of the touring guitarists on the circuit. Josh began sitting in with such greats as Jimmy Thackery, Tinsley Ellis, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, Double Trouble, Joanna Connor and Kim Simmonds, among others. Jimmy Thackery said of the 14-year-old, “Josh is three heartbreaks away from being a true blues guitar genius.” At 14, Josh released his first CD, Born Under a Blue Sign , and at 15, he released his second CD, Woodsheddin. While performing all over South Florida, Josh Smith and the Rhino Cats quickly became one of the most in-demand blues bands in the area. In 1994, while Josh was only 15, they received the Florida Jammy Award for best blues band and were selected as XS Readers Choice Winners in 1995 for best blues band. In 1996, then a senior in high school, Josh was put on the cover of the national magazine High School Senior , which hailed him as an “Up and Coming Guitar Legend.” That same year, Washburn Guitars Int’l recognized Josh’s talent and offered him an endorsement. They flew Josh to Chicago and guitar luthier Grover Jackson built him a custom guitar.Although Josh was an honor student, after graduation from high school in June 1997, Josh followed his heart and began pursuing what he was best at. His first national tour ensued with his newly formed power trio, Josh Smith and the Frost. Josh was now the band leader and vocalist, so he not only had to continue developing his guitar chops, but had to concentrate on his vocal prowess. In September 1997, Josh enlisted world-renowned producer Jim Gaines, whose credits include Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Allison, Steve Miller and Jimmy Thackery, to produce his third CD, Too Damn Cold.By 1998, Josh had completed four national tours with his band. In January 1998, Billboard Magazine took note of the rising young talent in a Continental Drift article. In February 1998, Josh was asked to support B.B. King on a number of theatre dates. In March 1998, the TV show Chicago Hope purchased the rights to the tune “32 degrees” from Too Damn Cold . An international CD release, The Mentos Freshmaker Tour , included the title cut, “Too Damn Cold,” in the spring of 1998.Josh toured nationally all of 1999 and in October of that year, he entered the recording studio again with Jim Gaines and produced Woman , his fourth CD. This CD was released and well received in the spring of 2000. Josh continued to tour the East Coast from New York to Florida through 2001 with his band. In June 2002, he married and he and his wife decided to move to Los Angeles. Josh was ready for something new and wanted to be around a variety of musicians. He also began being a sideman.Within a year of moving to L.A., he was retained by Virgin recording artist Ricky Fante. He played nationally and internationally with Ricky for the next two years. In May 2006, Josh recorded his fifth CD, Deep Roots . A more traditional blues CD, his music was once again well received by Blueswax and Blues Revue magazine. Josh continued to play with a variety of artists, such as actress Taryn Manning, Universal hip-hop artist Benny Cassette and Tara Ellis, to name a few. In January 2007, Josh was hired by 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks to be his lead guitarist. They completed two national tours from February-September 2007 with monthly dates and charity events until June 2008 when Taylor started Grease! on Broadway. In July 2008, Josh was hired by Raphael Saadiq. Since that time, Josh has played such high profile gigs with Raphael as backing Mick Jagger at the Grammy Awards in 2011 and the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2011. Josh continues to tour nationally and internationally with Raphael.Josh released his 6th studio CD, “Inception,” in 2009. This is an all-instrumental CD with a variety of genres that was once again well received by the public and critics alike. In 2010, Josh was signed to Crosscut Records, a label based out of Germany. Crosscut re-released Josh’s CD, “Deep Roots,” as “I’m Gonna Be Ready.” In October 2012, Josh’s CD, “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was released in Germany.Josh continues to live in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two children.About Jeff:Jeff McErlain is one of the rare musicians who can teach as well as he plays. This is borne out by Jeff being one of the most in demand guitar instructors as well as performing and recording with Robben Ford.Jeffs unique curriculum and method of teaching is perfect for the player who has been working at the guitar for a while but wants to go to the next level. Jeff has a straight forward and easy rapport with his students, he breaks things down so they can be easily understood, applied, and most importantly, made fun.Music is a language and learning it can be approached in much

Savoy Brown, one of the last of the original British blues bands. led by guitarist Kim Simmonds. Formed in 1965, the band has been through numerous lineup changes, with former members going on to be in Fleetwood Mac, UFO, King Crimson, Foghat and others. The one constant has been Simmonds, who is showing no signs of slowing down. Hot on the heels of the critically-acclaimed album City Night from last year, the band returns with their 41st long player, appropriately titled Ain’t Done Yet. Full of multi-layered guitars and the blues rock that Simmonds perfected decades ago.He tells us why he decided to layer up the guitars on this album and the stories behind the songs. Plus, interesting tidbits on how he chooses which guitar to play on each song and how he puts together demos. Surprisingly, he also tells us good things that will come of the recent pandemic.

Savoy Brown, one of the longest-running British Blues Rock bands. Formed in 1965 by guitarist Kim Simmonds, the band achieved success with songs like “Train to Nowhere,” “I’m Tired,” and “Hellbound Train.” Former band members have gone on to success with groups like Yes, Fleetwood Mac, and several members forming Foghat. But, through all this, Simmonds has remained the one constant, guiding force. The band’s 40th album, City Night, has just come out on Quarto Valley Records, and Simmonds searing guitar is once again, front and center, augmented by Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnett Grimm on drums, the most consistent lineup in the group’s history The band is also in the midst of a US tour.We chat about how Simmonds saw the Rolling Stones very early in their career, plus how he was influenced by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, and why he doesn’t play his signature Flying V guitar much anymore.
On this episode of Sly Dog Music-Cast, join me as I interview Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown. We discuss the new Savoy Brown album City Night, him stepping into the role of lead singer, how songwriting keeps him going, and so much more! Give it a listen and be sure to check out City Night!
In this episode of TrueFire Live, we sit down with blues guitarist extraordinaire, Josh Smith, to discuss his guitar masterclass course, Blue Highways. To learn more and watch the video from this live session, please visit truefire.com/live.About Josh Smith: Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. This is an emotional episode. Doug has been the recording and touring lead guitarist for Edgar Winter for 15 years. During this time he’s traveled all over the world, playing with legends of music like Rick Derringer, Pat Travers, Kim Simmonds, and others The story how Doug got the gig with Edgar Winter is NOTHING shy of amazing - shows you how something far greater than us, is running the show. Highs & lows of the music business, value of a music education, best decision he’s ever made, Mumbai, and much more. Hey Brothers and Sisters! We're starting off this show with a blast from my past...The Rocky Fellers - Killer Joe on Scepter Records 1963...this was on the turntable in my household always when my older sister, Janet would have her friends over for "sock hops"! Yeowza….bullet bras and everything!Set 1 - Come backs & MarblesChuck Wiley formerly of The Rock-its with a solo blast from 1965..."Come Back Baby" on Music Center Records / a killer 45 rpmFoghat follows with "Sara Lee" offa their 1st offering from 1972 on Bearsville Records....basically Foghat is Savoy Brown minus Kim Simmonds and adding Rod Price from Black Cat Bones to sit in the big chair.....Moby Grape kills it with "Going Nowhere" off of their first LP sans founder Skip Spence / "Grape '69"....Spence tried to part Don Stephenson's & Jerry Miller's hair with an axe so they thought it would be better to "go on without you" like the lyrics to "8:05".John McLaughlin segues nicely via Buddy Miles bass drum foot with "Marbles" a terrific cut off of "Devotion" from Douglas Records 1970.Los Miros [The Blackbirds] provide all the bed music for this episode ….'Sonada Amazona" which I think translates as "The song of the Amazon"....they're from Peru and all their records came out either in Peru or Colombia....tough to find.Set 2: Hobby Horses and Go Go'sBlossom Toes start off the 2nd set with a cover of Richie Havens' great "Just above my hobby horses head"...I'm not sure what Havens was musing about but The Toes covered it on the b-side of "Peace Loving Man" / Marmalade Records 1969.Richie follows with "Run Shaker Life" off of "Something Else Again"....and again I don't really know what he's talking about. I interviewed RH and found him to be a genuine nice guy....The Onion Radio News - A broke dad makes his son a playstation in the garage...Tracy Bonham - Mother mother...her first LP / CD "The Burdens of Being Upright"....wow!JJ Cale - It's a go go place / Liberty 1965 / 45 rpm. This record sits proudly in my 6000 + 45 collection....I think labelmate Henry Vestine of Canned Heat takes the lead guitar chores...Bed: Los Miros….see aboveSet 3 - Modern Lovers and Mr. BlueJonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers - She cracked / House of Hits 1976. Demos recorded in 1972 and slapped together by John Cale for a killer record.Talking Heads - Don't worry about the government / Sire 1977 / LP - "77". Do this and you'll be in more trouble than that Wikileaks cat!Another Onion Radio News....this time its the Weekly News....Prince Charles seizes the government....what a friggin wimp this guy is.Clear Lilght - Mr Blue / Elektra 1967 / Self titled LP.Tim Buckley - Once I Was / Elektra 1967 / "Goodby and Hello"I saw The Light open up for Tim at the Café A-Go-Go when both these records came out.....Great show.....Lee Underwood played with Buckley and put me in an altered state...and speaking of AS's....The singer in Clear Light was actor Cliff DeYoung who did his best "I'm from LA and I'm tripping ala Jim Morrison on stage"....no real complaints because we weren't on stage but were dosed ourselves......as an aside: one of the 2 drummers they performed with was Dallas Taylor...he's the guy staring out the window on the 1st CSN LP....L8ter G8ter's.....

In the movie Down & Dirty, the Johnny Winter documentary… you see that Paul basically got Johnny off of methadone and helped get him clean. He discussed this, as well as a couple of hilarious stories about Johnny, having to do with John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and James Montgomery. Plus, Johnny Winter’s amp tone settings… Pau’s new album “Badass Generation” is amazing and he shares the backstory of the songs with us... Paul pulls back the curtain and reveals a LOT of great information for how he structures his songs and the right way to learn solos of other artists. And what you should be looking for, beyond simply “learning the notes” in these solos. If you play guitar, this is like getting a free advanced guitar lesson from one of the masters of the instrument… Loads of cool stories about Leslie West, Dickey Betts, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Kim Simmonds, and much more... Edgar Winter wrote one of the greatest instrumentals in all of rock in “Frankenstein.” He’s back out on the road as part of the Classic Rock n’ Blues Tour, which also features his brother, Johnny Winter, along with Rick Derringer, Leslie West of Mountain, and Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown. Icon Fetch sits down with the multi-talented younger brother to find out why he never picked up the guitar (but did pick up just about everything else). He also tells us the great story behind “Frankenstein.”
