Sparks are touring – playing dates in the UK and Ireland in June and July – and with a new (and 28th) album, Mad!. Russell Mael looks back at the first shows he ever saw and played which entails … … sitting on the floors of LA clubs watching Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Move, the Faces, the Who and Tyrannosaurus Rex. … his Mum taking him to see the Beatles in the Hollywood Bowl among “10,000 screaming girls”. … “there was a faux honesty about the Laurel Canyon bands – ‘it's just me and my guitar' – whereas the British acts had the clothes and put on a performance. Which is just as honest.” … what Todd Rundgren saw in the early Sparks. … Edgar Wright's “love letter” movie ‘The Sparks Brothers' and how it's expanded their audience. … rehearsing for four months to perform all 21 of their albums in their entirety in 2008 (in Islington) and the people who came every night. … playing pizza parlours in the ‘60s – “we were paid in pizza”. … and how the Mael brothers' creative relationship has worked - indeed thrived – for over 60 years. You know how we feel about the Mael brothers and their band Sparks. So it was with great delight that we heard about Chris Sutton's new book, "Sparks 1969-1979: Every Album, Every Song" from Sonicbond Publishing. In the book, Chris takes a detailed look at the first decade of this incredibly influential band. For more information, check out the Sonicbond Publishing website, and order your copy wherever you get your books.
Author Chris Sutton returns to the podcast. He's here to talk about his latest book Sparks 1969 to 1979: Every Album, Every Song. It's part of Sonicbond's On Track series. Beginning as a five-man band, the duo of Ron and Russell Mael retained the name and spent much of the seventies working with a succession of sidemen and collaborators. They ended the seventies on a high note with the collaboration with Italian composer and producer Giorgio Moroder for top 20 UK hit “No. 1 In Heaven”. Many who worked on Sparks records have shared their thoughts in the book. The popularity of Sparks has grown over the decades. In 2023 they sold out two nights at the Royal Albert Hall!Purchase a copy of Sparks 1969 to 1979: Every Album, Every Song in the USPurchase a copy of Sparks 1969 to 1979: Every Album, Every Song in the UK Episode Playlist ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

Listeners know how we feel about the band Sparks and we had a rare opportunity that we wanted to share with everyone we've ever met.You may not have heard of Noel, but if you listen to this show, you've definitely heard us sing the praises of two people who wrote and produced a record for her.Ron and Russell Mael from Sparks made "Is There More To Life Than Dancing?" for Noel shortly after completing their "No. 1 Song in Heaven" album.Noel's record is more of the same great dance music. (Good luck getting "Dancing is Dangerous" out of your head after you hear it.) Thankfully, the record is now available again on both CD and vinyl AND it's got bonus tracks. We talked with the rather private Noel about the whole experience and so much more in this fascinating interview. "Is There More To Life Than Dancing?" is available right now wherever you get your music, and you can order directly from the Sparks website as well.

I wasn't sure if I was ever going to really delve into this one, but here you go! This will be another two-parter. Telex was a Belgian technopop group active from 1978 to 1988. They made the acquaintance of Ron and Russell Mael in 1979, through a mutual collaborator, the 18-year-old French pop singer Lio. Ron and Marc Moulin, in particular, struck up a lifelong friendship. But where the 1981 album Sex (hilariously neutered with the title Birds and Bees in the UK one year later) enters the Sparks canon is in that album's lyrics. Telex wanted to crack the Anglophone market with their third album, and enlisted Ron Mael to write the words. Songs like "Brainwashed," "Drama Drama," and "Haven't We Met Somewhere Before," sparkle with crystalline synth lines and disco grooves. And they really could pass for Sparks songs of the era. I'm joined by John Ashdown, zooming in from London, on this one, and I can't thank him enough for his time and for sharing his insights. John himself produces electronic dance music under the name Christ on a Bike, and I strongly encourage you to check it out here: christonabike.net You can always drop me a line at: podcastsparks@gmail.com

Sparks, the American pop duo formed in 1960s Los Angeles, are back with their 26th album, The Girl is Crying in her Latte. Samira Ahmed meets brothers Ron and Russell Mael to discuss how Cate Blanchett came to be dancing in the music video for the title track and their extraordinary longevity. E. M. Forster's 1908 novel A Room with a View is being dramatised for Radio 4, as is the novel The Ballad of Syd and Morgan, which imagines a meeting between Forster and Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd.
If you were about to turn 50 and could go see five bands in concert, who would they be and why?As the Dads discuss this conundrum, they get distracted and end up talking about Sparks. Who is Sparks? Only one of the most influential bands of the past five decades. They've inspired Joy Division, Queen and Bjork, collaborated with Giorgio Morodor, Franz Ferdinand and members of the Go-Gos, and were even name checked in a Paul McCartney video. These two inscrutable brothers from Southern California have been one step ahead of the musical zeitgeist of the time for years.Come join The New Dad Rock and they explore Sparks. And when you're done listening to the episode, tune into their Edgar Wright-directed documentary. In the meantime, click on any of the links for a taste of Sparks. Kristian Hoffman ran away from his boyhood home in Santa Barbara, California, to New York City where he and his high school friend, Lance Loud, formed a band called The Mumps. This was quite soon after both had made dramatic appearances in what is now known as the first reality TV series: PBS' award winning "An American Family".Flourishing in the New York club scene in the late '70s, Lance and Kristian became obsessed with the New York Dolls and lead to Kristian drawing the infamous "Bendover Girl" which was included as an insert in the Doll's first LP.While still performing as Mumps, Lance and Kristian subsequently appeared in a show called "New Wave Vaudeville" , produced by Ann Magnuson, who was to prove a life-long collaborator with Kristian. Thus they met met the headliner Klaus Nomi, the eccentric legendary German counter-tenor mutant glam virtuoso visionary. Kristian approached Klaus Nomi about forming a band. Kristian's collaboration with Klaus included writing several songs for him, including "Total Eclipse."Kristian made his mark on rock and roll history as the first musical director for chamber pop singer Rufus Wainwright's touring band, has played keyboards and written songs for the atmospheric torch band Congo Norvell, has produced, toured with, and written songs for punk/cabaret singer Abby Travis, toured and recorded as keyboardist for El Vez, the Mexican Elvis all over the U.S., and toured for five years with and played on several albums with Kinks founder and lead guitarist Dave Davies. Kristian's third solo album, called & because it consists mainly of duets with other musicians (including Russell Mael of Sparks, Rufus Wainwright, Maria McKee, El Vez, Paul Reubens, Anna Waronker, Lydia Lunch, Stew, and Ann Magnuson), was released to great critical acclaim. "Uncut" Magazine called it a "spectacular, operatic art rock power-pop album." Aquarian Weekly called it a "flawlessly crafted, ornately embellished pop opera," and the L.A. Weekly said "& is the record that every fan of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Kinks and great songcraft in general has been pining for. Frighteningly Excellent!"As for where this multifaceted singer/songwriter, musician, poet and artist will be headed next, it's a safe prediction that he has a surprise or two in store.
Mit Pistolenschüssen und Western-Gehabe stürmt der Song „This town ain‘t big enough for Both of us" gleich nach seinem Erscheinen am 1. Mai 1974 die Charts. Die Band, bestehend aus den beiden Brüdern Ron und Russell Mael, experimentierte mit verschiedensten Keyboards, mit vollelektronischem Piano und Bandhallgerät. Aufwändige Arrangements, sehr originell - Sparks waren für spätere Musiker wie Red Hot Chili Peppers oder Depeche Mode stilbildend.
Special guest Dave Weigel joins Discord & Rhyme once again to talk about Sparks, “your favorite band's favorite band.” It's been a good couple of decades for Ron and Russell Mael. After decades of toiling in semi-obscurity, the brothers saw a late-career renaissance in 2002 with the symphonic, beatless dance album Lil' Beethoven, and Edgar Wright's 2021 documentary The Sparks Brothers cemented their status as elder statesmen of irreverent pop music. For today's episode, Producer Mike is taking us back to the band's early years with the 1974 album Kimono My House, which demonstrates that the Maels' sense of songcraft was in full force from the very beginning. Despite what the interviewees in The Sparks Brothers (including Dave!) might tell you, Sparks aren't for everybody, and the Maels occasionally revel in being grating in a way that even our hosts can't abide. But if you listen to “This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us” and adore it, good news: this is only the beginning of a gloriously warped musical journey.Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, John McFerrin, Dan Watkins, Dave WeigelComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/097-sparks-kimono-my-house-1974Support the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

I Predict that When I'm With You, there will be no Existential Threat unless we're Eaten By The Monster Of Love in this Cool World.Welcome to episode 86 of See Hear Podcast.Edgar Wright has been known to use music to great effect in his narrative films, so it's only appropriate that he makes a music-related documentary. The Sparks Brothers tells the tale of brothers Ron and Russell Mael who as Sparks have been writing and recording albums for nearly 5 decades. Unlike so many musicians who had an initial creative flourish then lose sight of their muse, the Maels are still creating great music right up to today.Due to a peculiar turn of events, Tim, Bernard and Maurice handed the keys to the See Hear car over to friends of the show Mike White of the Projection Booth Podcast and musician / documentarian Skizz Cyzyk. These guys are the best, and we felt completely comfortable leaving the show in their professional hands. As a bonus, Mike also presents an interview with the film's editor Paul Trewartha. It's a fascinating discussion about his involvement with the film as well as the editing process in general. The regular crew will definitely be back next month to carry on with regular podcast shenanigans (which may be bad news if you've enjoyed the high standard brought by Mike and Skizz). One of the most dynamic filmmakers working in the industry, Edgar Wright, is making a documentary about the band Sparks. All three are joining today to discuss this film, The Sparks Brothers! In this episode, we talk about… How Edgar Wright and Ron and Russell Mael (of Sparks) met over Twitter and ultimately decided to make a documentary about the band. How the group approached making the documentary so that it would have Wright's stamp on it, rather than being dry like many other documentaries. How Wright thought about using a Sparks song in Hot Fuzz, but didn't because their songs demand so much attention. How Wright's and Sparks' artistic sensibilities align. How music operates as a part of Wright's process. Artistic influences for Sparks on their music and creative process. Influences on Wright both for general filmmaking and on his approach in creating a music documentary. Pop music has had its share of bands with siblings: Gallaghers, Finns, Carpenters, Davies, Wilsons (some with heart and some with surf), Isleys, Warhursts….. Then there's the Mael men!!!!! Welcome to episode 135 of Love That Album podcast. Sparks, (ostensibly, Ron and Russell Mael) are that rare beast that are hugely identifiable despite having changed styles (and record companies) several times. By the time they released album number 11, “Angst In My Pants” in 1982, they'd experimented with rock, prog, euro-disco, pop….and they still had many albums and styles to go. Yet, when you hear a Sparks song, there's that "something" that makes you sure it's them. I am honoured to be joined by music and film writers, Heather Drain and Mike McPadden to discuss “Angst” as well as related peripheral topics. The album is loaded with jerky new-wave era pop. Like its title, much of the album sounds musically nervous and this is reflected in many of the record's songs. Join us as we talk about cigarettes with human traits, Stars on 45, humour in music without being comedic, fragile masculinity, taking the Mickey, anxiety, and (of course) hiding public erections….amongst several other tasteful topics. I also make a production comparison that I hope Heather will forgive me for…….. Having Heather and Mike on the show was a joy. They brought so much insight, and I look forward to further shows with them. Go to Heather's website at www.mondoheather.com to get links to her essays and podcast appearances, or to order her latest brilliant book, The Bizarro Encyclopedia of Film Vol.1 Mike is also keeping busy with 3 (count ‘em) excellent film podcasts on the go. The second conversation with brothers Ron and Russell Mael of the band Sparks, along with stripped-down versions of two songs from their new album Hippopotamus.
Kate Winslet's latest film, The Mountain Between Us, is an epic romance shot at 10,000 feet above sea level and at -38 degrees Celsius. The actress talks to Samira about working with co-star Idris Elba, the legacy of Titanic, and looks forward to making her next film, when she will be working with Woody Allen.Californian brothers Ron and Russell Mael formed the band Sparks in the early '70s, and their first hit This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us made them household names in the UK. 23 albums and more than four decades later, the brothers discuss their new album, Hippopotamus, and look back at their early days living in London at the time of power cuts and the three-day week. Edward Lear is the writer of some of our most loved poetry. The Owl and the Pussycat has been voted the UK's favourite poem many times. Jenny Uglow's new biography, Mr Lear: A Life of Art and Nonsense, explores the life behind the rhymes and reveals a natural history painter, a landscape artist, and only later a somewhat reluctant nonsense poet. A contemporary of Lewis Carroll and a friend to Tennyson and the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, should we see him as a product of his time or a romantic rebel? Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May.
This is my homage to my favorite band, Sparks, and the core of Sparks, brothers Ron & Russell Mael. I speak to Tosh Berman of Tam Tam Books, who wrote a book about a history-making Sparks 21-album concert series in London and who published a book of Sparks song lyrics. I also chat with Eric Theise, an artist, musician and avid and articulate Sparks fan. Laurie Cohen, Director of the Mill Valley Philharmonic, shares her first impressions of Sparks music, and I mention something about each of Sparks' 25 albums from 1972 to the present, and play excerpts from some of my favorite tracks. The episode closes with "Part One" of my conversation with Ron and Russell Mael! There's a great podcast totally dedicated to the music of Sparks called "All You Ever Think About Is Sparks" that can be found at https://sparkspodcast.podbean.com (https://sparkspodcast.podbean.com) if you'd like an even deeper dive into the music of Sparks. Check it out!
