This week, we share our conversation with Nicole Bean, co-owner of Houston-based Pizaro's Pizza Napoletana. During PizzaCon 2024 in Philly, Executive Editor Denise Greer had a lively conversation with Nicole about top-of-mind pizza business issues, taking on a leadership role in the pizza industry, multiple pizza style and using AI in the business and an in-depth talk about dialing AI prompts. Bill Hutchinson, wife Gloria and son Matt opened Pizaro's in 2011. Nicole and husband Brad came on board in 2013. Today, Nicole is president of Pizaro's, which operates two locations. In a previous Conversation in Pizza Today Magazine, Nicole said, “ There was a lot of education with customers during the first year and tons of feedback about wanting more toppings and a more substantial crust to hold those toppings from those who didn't quite understand the concept of Napoletana pizza. We knew our Napoletana was great and didn't take long to catch on here in Houston, but we wanted to give customers something more. After opening our second and larger location (closer to downtown) in 2015, I went out to San Francisco to Tony's International School of Pizza to learn to make Detroit-style while also learning Chicago, New York and Sicilian. Matt and I launched Detroit six months after I got back from school. I used only social media and local press to spread the word on our newest baby. Response to our Detroit went better than expected and continues to grow. It was only a year ago (2017) that we launched New York-style, which took us 10 months of development with dough, tomatoes, cheese and market testing.” The podcast interview took place during PizzaCon in Philadelphia, PA on November 7. When Mike Golub's ex-girlfriend, Shannon Floyd, asked him to pick up their son from her home, Mike had to be a little taken aback. In the years since they'd broken up, Mike had only ever been to Shannon's home one time. Typically, Mike and Shannon did pick ups and drop offs at a neutral location. But that evening, Mike complied with Shannon's request. He headed toward the home she shared with her husband, Chad Floyd, and was never seen or heard from again. Then Kristin tells us a story that had first responders scratching their heads. It was April 4, 1989 when Kim Hallock told police that she and her ex-boyfriend, Chip Flynn, had been robbed and kidnapped by a Black man. She said that she and Chip had been hanging out at a park when a stranger threatened them with a gun. He ordered the two of them into Chip's truck, then got in with them, shifting gears, steering the truck and holding a gun on them as he made his way to a citrus grove. When the man parked the truck, Chip grabbed a gun that Kim had hidden underneath a pair of jeans. With his hands tied behind his back, he shot at the man. Though first responders found Kim's story odd, the detectives who were assigned to the case apparently didn't. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. Guest host Cathy DeWtt has an engaging conversation with Vietnam combat veteran Bill Hutchinson, who is a well-known musician, concert organizer, and raconteur. Bill tells several amazing stories, and perhaps the most compelling one is how sharing a song saved his life in a scary situation in Vietnam. Cathy and Bill even do a short reenactment of the moment! They go on to explore the way music can be a vehicle for change and how it creates a positive impact on the lives of both listeners and players.

Franklin High School has a rich history in the emerald city of Seattle. Great alumni such as Dr. Bill Hutchinson, who founded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center named after his brother Fred, a former MLB player and coach. Grammy award-winning Jazz musician Kenny G. Sports icons such as MLB hall of farmer Ron Santo, Mario Bailey, Corey Dillon, Terry Metcalf, and so many others. There's a rich history of greatness at Franklin High School. The greatness that Athletic Director Scott Griggs is constantly reminded of as he walks the halls and sees the banners on the walls or the alumni bricks laying on the floors. He embraces this history as he helps lay down his own foundation for future generations. Scott discusses his midwest upbringings and how they led him to Seattle, the diversity of his school as roughly 92% of his student enrollment are minorities, or as I like to say majorities, and the importance of open dialogue with students in today's climate. The foundation that is being laid now by his new football coach Terry Green and a promise of stability at that position that seems to have had a revolving door for the past decade. The importance of diversity and community is at the forefront of our discussion. A great example of that is his basketball coach and more importantly good friend Craig Jackson. Craig has been named Director of Diversity to WIBCA (Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association) a position that will give him a chance to help guide Washington state basketball programs to support student-athletes' constantly changing challenges. Franklin High School, a school with a long storied history. For Scott, he's looking to write his own chapter in this illustrious story.

The villagers of a small town gather together in the square on June 27, a beautiful day, for the town lottery. In other towns, the lottery takes longer, but there are only 300 people in this village, so the lottery takes only two hours. Village children, who have just finished school for the summer, run around collecting stones. They put the stones in their pockets and make a pile in the square. Men gather next, followed by the women. Parents call their children over, and families stand together. Mr. Summers runs the lottery because he has a lot of time to do things for the village. He arrives in the square with the black box, followed by Mr. Graves, the postmaster. This black box isn’t the original box used for the lottery because the original was lost many years ago, even before the town elder, Old Man Warner, was born. Mr. Summers always suggests that they make a new box because the current one is shabby, but no one wants to fool around with tradition. Mr. Summers did, however, convince the villagers to replace the traditional wood chips with slips of paper. Mr. Summers mixes up the slips of paper in the box. He and Mr. Graves made the papers the night before and then locked up the box at Mr. Summers’s coal company. Before the lottery can begin, they make a list of all the families and households in the village. Mr. Summers is sworn in. Some people remember that in the past there used to be a song and salute, but these have been lost. Tessie Hutchinson joins the crowd, flustered because she had forgotten that today was the day of the lottery. She joins her husband and children at the front of the crowd, and people joke about her late arrival. Mr. Summers asks whether anyone is absent, and the crowd responds that Dunbar isn’t there. Mr. Summers asks who will draw for Dunbar, and Mrs. Dunbar says she will because she doesn’t have a son who’s old enough to do it for her. Mr. Summers asks whether the Watson boy will draw, and he answers that he will. Mr. Summers then asks to make sure that Old Man Warner is there too. Mr. Summers reminds everyone about the lottery’s rules: he’ll read names, and the family heads come up and draw a slip of paper. No one should look at the paper until everyone has drawn. He calls all the names, greeting each person as they come up to draw a paper. Mr. Adams tells Old Man Warner that people in the north village might stop the lottery, and Old Man Warner ridicules young people. He says that giving up the lottery could lead to a return to living in caves. Mrs. Adams says the lottery has already been given up in other villages, and Old Man Warner says that’s “nothing but trouble.” Mr. Summers finishes calling names, and everyone opens his or her papers. Word quickly gets around that Bill Hutchinson has “got it.” Tessie argues that it wasn’t fair because Bill didn’t have enough time to select a paper. Mr. Summers asks whether there are any other households in the Hutchinson family, and Bill says no, because his married daughter draws with her husband’s family. Mr. Summers asks how many kids Bill has, and he answers that he has three. Tessie protests again that the lottery wasn’t fair. Mr. Graves dumps the papers out of the box onto the ground and then puts five papers in for the Hutchinsons. As Mr. Summers calls their names, each member of the family comes up and draws a paper. When they open their slips, they find that Tessie has drawn the paper with the black dot on it. Mr. Summers instructs everyone to hurry up. The villagers grab stones and run toward Tessie, who stands in a clearing in the middle of the crowd. Tessie says it’s not fair and is hit in the head with a stone. Everyone begins throwing stones at her. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hmphaudiobooks/support

How is Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan that causes neuro-invasive disease, transmitted as a foodborne pathogen? Why are cats important in transmitting Toxoplasma infection? Anita Koshy answer these questions and talks about her research on the latest Meet the Microbiologist. Julie’s Biggest Takeaways: The primary host for T. gondii is cats, in which the protozoan can undergo sexual reproduction. Why cats? No one knows, in part because there isn’t a good in vitro system to study cat epithelial cell interactions with T. gondii. Most warm-blooded animals, including birds, can be infected with Toxoplasma. Intermediate hosts can pass Toxoplasma from one to another if one eat these tissue cysts, explaining why Toxoplasma can be a foodborne pathogen. In healthy individuals, the immune response clears most fast-growing cells (tachyzoites) but some protozoans convert to a slow-growing cell form (bradyzoites). In people, these bradyzoites form cysts predominantly in the brain, the heart and the skeletal muscle. Some serological studies suggest a tie between Toxoplasma infection and brain disorders, but these are less definitive than causative studies in mice. Populations with high Toxoplasma or low Toxoplasma prevalence don’t see a correlative incidence of disorders such as schizophrenia or Alzheimer’s disease. Featured Quotes: “When we talk about neuroinfectious diseases, we’re talking about the diseases that cause symptoms. Those that can get into the central nervous system and those that cause symptomatic disease are the same.” “A parasite is sitting there dormant or maybe reactivating every so often and the immune system comes in and deals with that reactivation. But when you lack an immune system, all of a sudden when that parasite reactivates, there is no longer this immune system that will come in and clear it out.” “What we don’t know is whether reactivation occurs preferentially in the brain. There is evidence from HIV patients of inflammation of the heart or inflammation of the skeletal tissue - but those weren’t the symptoms that presented, which were of the brain. Did reactivation happen in the brain, or did it occur elsewhere and the parasite was able to travel to the brain and there’s no longer an immune system to clear it out?” Links for this Episode: Koshy Lab Site Sea Otter Infection with Toxoplasma Rats Infected with T. gondii Lose Their Aversion to Cat Urine HOM Tidbit: The History of Toxoplasma gondii Bill Hutchinson obituary
