The Remember This Crap tour around the diamond remembering the greatest (and other) Cubs players at each position has reached the hot corner. Andy and Huey are on hand to tell you more than you'd ever like to know about every regular third baseman (and some irregular ones) from the Hall of Famer who first played the position in 1876 all the way to the current day including a theory as to why Matt Shaw wears his number. The Cubs have had some legitimately great players including two World Series heroes (one we actually were alive to see play), several Utility Tunnel of Famers, some real Hall of Famers and Leo Gomez! You'll hear us opine as to why our generation grew up with the myth that Ron Santo was the last great third sacker and why that was nothing more than propaganda. Third base has been a shockingly good position for this club with some really fun guys.

On December 5, 1921, Babe Ruth and two other members of the New York Yankees are suspended for participating in an “illegal” barnstorming tour after the 1921 World Series. Commissioner Landis punishes Ruth, outfielder Bob Meusel, and pitcher “Wild Bill” Piercy for the first six weeks of the 1922 season. This will have little impact as the Yankees will make World Series for the second straight year (although they lost to the NY Giants for the second consecutive time). However, Ruth had the worst year of his career posting a 6.4 WAR, and as an everyday player, his 1.106 OPS was his second worst mark of the 20's. He did bounce back in 1923, winning the MVP. He still managed to hit 35 homers with 96 RBI, so it was a pretty good year. What I marvel at is how much of his Baseball Reference page is bolded. Between 1918 and 1931, he wasn't the league leader in home runs just twice. Once was this 1922 season and the other was 1925, when he appeared in just 98 games. On December 5, 1973 — Ron Santo becomes the first player to invoke the new 10 and 5 rule. The Cubs want to trade Santo to the Angels for two pitchers, but he vetoes the deal. The 10-5 rule, which was agreed upon during the 1972 players strike, gives a player with 10 years' service and 5 consecutive years with a team the right to veto a trade. In this case Santo was from the west coast but was comfortable in Chicago and desired to stay in the area. The Cubs honored the new agreement, and he will eventually be traded to the cross-town White Sox. It did not work out well as Bill Melton was the third baseman, and Santo moved around between second and the DH role. He will hang up the cleats in 1974. Ironically on this day in 2011, Santo will finally get his due and be voted into Baseball's Hall of Fame. A long overdue honor for Santo who passed away the previous year. He receives 15 of 16 votes from members of the “Golden Era” Committee. On December 5, 1978 — After sixteen years with the Cincinnati Reds, Pete Rose signs a four-year, $3.2 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Other teams which pursued “Charlie Hustle” include the Mets, Braves, Pirates and the Royals. The deal temporarily makes Rose the highest-paid athlete in team sports. In 5 years with the Phils (1979-1983), Pete will be a 4X All-Star and help the Phillies to 2 NL Pennants including the Phillies first Championship in 1980. He led the league in hits in 1981 with 140 base knocks, and he finished his Phillies career with a slash line of .291/.365/.361. That was a period that covered his age-38 to age-42 seasons. On December 5, 1990, the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays collaborate on an old-fashioned blockbuster trade. San Diego deals Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter to Toronto for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez. Alomar and Carter will help the Blue Jays to two World Championships. Alomar will become one of baseball's best players during his 6 years, hitting .307 with 206 stolen bases, a .382 OBP and .833 OPS. He will finish in top 10 in the MVP vote 3 times and win 6 Gold Globes. Carter, a premium RBI man, will drive in 100+ runs in 6 of his 7 years in Toronto. Only the strike shortened year stopped him in 1995. He will finish in the top 5 for MVP voting twice and hit one of the most historic homeruns in World Series history off Mitch Williams. Fred McGriff will go on to hit 493 home runs over his career playing for multiple teams. It remains an injustice he is not in Cooperstown.Tony Fernandez will play for 2 seasons in San Diego end up back on Toronto and play on the 1993 World Championship team, playing in all 6 games and driving in 9 runs. On December 5, 1951, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson dies at the age of 62. Jackson, who succumbs to a heart attack, batted .356 over his 13-year career. Jackson had the talent to be the greatest player in history, but he threw it away...

We talk about the only set of teammates that were elected to the HOF in the same year. There are 9 teams that lack a one team Hall of Famer. The Cubs, though talented, had a challenging season, ending 5th in the NL with a 87-74 record. Their inconsistency hindered a promising start, and they missed the postseason. Players like Ernie Banks and Ron Santo contributed solid performances, but the team's overall lack of depth was apparent.Contrastingly, the Braves had a more successful year, finishing 7th in the NL with a 77-85 record. Hank Aaron and Phil Niekro were instrumental, with Aaron hitting .307 with 39 home runs and Niekro posting an ERA of 1.87. New Mets outfielder Tommy Pham turns 35 today. Among players born on March 8, he's fourth all-time in wins above replacement, behind Dick Allen, Jim Rice, and Carl Furillo. (He's tied on Baseball-Reference's list with Harry Lord, a pre-World War I outfielder for the Red Sox and Tigers, and let's nicely project Pham as better than replacement level this year.)When Pham makes his first Mets appearance, he'll be only the second member of the team with a March 8 birthday, ever. The only other one was lefty pitcher Willard Hunter, who went 4-9 with a 5.06 ERA over 68 appearances for New York from 1962-64. Hunter debuted with the Dodgers on April 16 of that first year of Mets baseball… and immediately showed himself to be 1962 Mets material by coming into a game that Los Angeles trailed by eight runs in the sixth inning, and immediately issuing a walk to Harvey Kuennn and giving up a single to Chuck Hiller before serving up a three-run ding dong to Willie Mays.Hunter got to face Mays again in his debut, and walked him as part of a seven-run inning that included Orlando Cepeda stealing home. That was it for Hunter as a Dodger (one appearance, 40.50 ERA) and they sent him to the Mets on May 25 as the player to be named later in the Charlie Neal-Lee Walls trade from the previous December. On July 4, 1962, Hunter returned with the Mets to the scene of his disastrous major league debut, Candlestick Park, this time with a clean slate as the starting pitcher in the back end of the holiday doubleheader. The Mets had lost the first game when Jay Hook couldn't get out of the first inning, Mays tripled, and Willie McCovey hit a pair of homers. But for the nightcap, they had Hunter, familiar with the scene and with a score to settle against the Giants for spoiling his first game as a big leaguer.Frank Thomas (not that one) started the bottom of the first inning — after Neal had bounced in to a 4-6-3 DP to end the top of the first, tremendous 1962 Metsing — with an error on a Kuenn grounder. After Jim Davenport walked, Hunter got his rematch with Mays, who promptly blasted a three-run homer. But, hey, since the Mets had used so much bullpen, and Hunter didn't give up anything else in the first, he stayed in there… and gave up a two-run homer to Mays in the third inning. The Mets lost, 10-3.Mays also singled against Hunter at the Polo Grounds on July 15. Overall, they faced each other for nine plate appearances: Mays was 5-for-8 with three homers, eight RBI, a walk, and on June 3, 1962, in the ninth inning of a 6-1 Giants cruise, one beautiful strikeout that Hunter could remember for the rest of his life. He died two years ago, at the age of 85, having recorded strikeouts in his major league career of Mays, Lou Brock, Eddie Mathews, Ron Santo, Mays, Cepeda, and Roberto Clemente. And the only guys who touched him up for more than one homer? Two of the greatest to ever swing a bat — three each for Mays and Henry Aaron.Hunter's final career appearance was a rough inning in St. Louis in the last game of the 1964 season. After giving up a two-run homer to future Yankees broadcaster Bill White, the last batter Hunter faced was future Mets broadcaster Tim McCarver, who hit a two-run double to drive in Ken Boyer and Dick Groat, but himself was thrown out at third on the play. That's not exactly how Mets-Padres in San Diego ended in 1986 with McCarver at the mic, but we'd be remiss not to remember that, and to continue celebrating the late McCarver's legacy as a Mets voice. This Day in Baseball - The Daily Rewind

It remains an injustice he is not in Cooperstown. Tony Fernandez will play for 2 seasons in San Diego end up back on Toronto and play on the 1993 World Championship team, playing in all 6 games and driving in 9 runs. On December 5, 1951, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson dies at the age of 62. Jackson, who succumbs to a heart attack, batted .356 over his 13-year career. Jackson had the talent to be the greatest player in history, but he threw it away when he accepted $5,000 to throw the 1919 World Series. As part of the most infamous scandal in sports history, Jackson was banished from baseball following the 1920 season, along with his seven co-conspirators. The controversy over that decision has kept Jackson's name alive long after his death.

The 1993 Cubs did something rare at the time, they had a winning record. Even more rare for the Cubs they had a winning record and didn't make the playoffs. Oh, and they rewarded their manager by firing him. Probably because they were tired of trying to remember how to spell Lefebvre. They let Greag Maddux go and acted like it was a genius move to use his money to sign four guys...only one of whom was worth a damn. We relive Maddux's return to Wrigley and Jose Guzman's near no-hitter--and those were just the first two games! Sammy Sosa went 30-30 and made Ron Santo mad (which was worth it.) Rick Wilkins had one of the greatest offensive seasons by a Cubs catcher ever and we debunk the idea that it was his fault he only drove in 73 runs on 30 homers. Fans threw Randy Myers' posters on the field, Shawon Dunston made a triumphant late season return and Ryne Sandberg got paid and then broke his wrist. All that and much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

Sandwiched in between the 88 win near-miss 2001 Cubs and the 88 win heartbreaking 2003 Cubs were the gawdawful 2002 Cubs. They got a manager fired, which got Ron Santo's number unofficially unretired before it could be retired. Moises Alou showed up and immediately got hurt. Fred McGriff was still around putting up completely hollow stats. They traded a Rookie of the Year for two pitchers, one of whom had 24 digits, and two prized rookies made their big league debuts. You'll learn the truth about Jon Lieber's rain delay gem, how Mark Prior allowed his first career hit to a teammate and just how much Don Baylor loved to bunt. Andy MacPhail showed himself the door, finally, and Sammy Sosa was still around smashing dingers and blowing kisses. Oh, and you'll also find about the dinner where somebody died rather than continue dining with Chip Caray. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

Franklin High School has a rich history in the emerald city of Seattle. Great alumni such as Dr. Bill Hutchinson, who founded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center named after his brother Fred, a former MLB player and coach. Grammy award-winning Jazz musician Kenny G. Sports icons such as MLB hall of farmer Ron Santo, Mario Bailey, Corey Dillon, Terry Metcalf, and so many others. There's a rich history of greatness at Franklin High School. The greatness that Athletic Director Scott Griggs is constantly reminded of as he walks the halls and sees the banners on the walls or the alumni bricks laying on the floors. He embraces this history as he helps lay down his own foundation for future generations. Scott discusses his midwest upbringings and how they led him to Seattle, the diversity of his school as roughly 92% of his student enrollment are minorities, or as I like to say majorities, and the importance of open dialogue with students in today's climate. The foundation that is being laid now by his new football coach Terry Green and a promise of stability at that position that seems to have had a revolving door for the past decade. The importance of diversity and community is at the forefront of our discussion. A great example of that is his basketball coach and more importantly good friend Craig Jackson. Craig has been named Director of Diversity to WIBCA (Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association) a position that will give him a chance to help guide Washington state basketball programs to support student-athletes' constantly changing challenges. Franklin High School, a school with a long storied history. For Scott, he's looking to write his own chapter in this illustrious story.

It was probably inevitable, but as a weekly sketch comedy show, Almost Live! was often compared to network television's Saturday Night Live. Why not? Almost Live! aired on Seattle's KING TV every Saturday night, immediately adjacent to the venerated SNL. Both shows had 'live' in their title. Both traded in sketch comedy. Both featured regular ensemble casts of performers and writers satirizing the world around them - the national SNL show more broadly; the local Almost Live, more... locally. But while Saturday Night Live featured a different guest host every week - Almost Live! - from 1988 to 1999 - had the same guest host every time... John Keister. Yes, Keister. Insert your joke here. He's heard them all. John and Seattle grew up together. His neck of the woods is the Seward Park neighborhood. Abraham Lincoln, who had quite a neck himself, had a secretary of state named William Seward. He's the guy who came up with the idea of buying Alaska in 1867. It was so cheap, he bought it with cash on hand. And some coupons. John Keister grew up in a time when "kids spent more time on bicycles than on their damn phones!" [The preceding sentence was written by a grouchy old man from Covington.] Seward Park is not far from Lake Washington... very near the spot where summertime's Seafair Hydroplane races took place. And John, like lot of other Seattle kids of the time, were so enamored with the sport of hydroplane racing that they would fashion toy versions of the big boats... tie them onto their bikes with long strings... and then drag them behind as they pedaled at top speed down the neighborhood streets. Today, they'd be arrested. John attended Sharples Junior High (now called Casper W. Sharples Alternative Secondary School) which is too much for any kid to remember or spell. Franklin High School was John's next stop - he being just one of many famous Franklin alumni including Fred Hutchinson, baseball star and namesake of Seattle's preeminent cancer research center... There was a student named Ron Santo - who became a Hall of Fame baseball star - another alum was Keye Luke, an actor famous as number one son in the Charlie Chan movies. Cartoonist, Lynda Barry went to Franklin - as did international dancer and choreographer, Mark Morris. Also a Franklin graduate: one-time governor, Gary Locke - Seattle's legendary sports writer, Royal Brougham was a Frankliner. And some of the Nordstroms went there. and Kenny G. - and Johnny K. - John Keister. Everybody went to Franklin. Except, of course, Franklin. John Keister official sites AlmostJohnKeister.com John Keister | YouTube John Keister | Facebook Next, the U-Dub - working with the student newspaper, The Daily. After graduating, he got hired at a Seattle music magazine, The Rocket - which lead to a gig called 'The Rocket Report' on a KING TV show. Not long after, a new show called 'Almost Live!' came along - and through an unlikely happenstance - John began doing stuff for it. When Almost Live! took a dirt nap in 1999, Keister tried a new show across town on KIRO TV along with another Almost Live guy, Bob Nelson - The John Report with Bob. Then John was a writer on 'The Eyes of Nye' - a national show featuring another 'Almost Live' alum, Bill Nye. And his eyes. Today, John Keister is sort of a Seattle icon as much as the Space Needle - although not as tall; as much as grunge music - although without the distorted guitar and angst; and even as native as the geoduck - although Keister himself is not a bivalve mollusk with a shell. Unless he's been holding out on me. He's the dad of three adult kids - Elroy, Riley and Arlo. And just like William Faulkner, Warren Buffet and Eminem - who all stayed in the places they grew up - so has John Keister. Here he is, from the Seattle home he shares with his wife, Mary - still living within blocks of the old neighborhood.

You're in for a real treat today as we spent 40 minutes on the phone talking to legendary Cubs radio play by play man Pat Hughes! At the start of the show, Kate and D.J. discuss how this interview came to be, so fast forward to 3:13 if you want to get right to the interview. Once the baseball season starts, Pat will be in his 25th season calling games for the Chicago Cubs. Sit back and listen to this amazing storyteller talk about his humble roots transitioning from college basketball player to announcer and how creativity and hard work gave him one of his first big breaks into big-league announcing. Next, he talks about his experiences working with or down the hall from legends of the game such as Harry Kalas, Bob Uecker, Vin Scully, Harry Caray, and Ron Santo. Then we transition into discussing the 2016 Chicago Cubs season, the nerves behind calling Game 7 of the World Series, being the first Chicago Cubs radio announcer to say "...and the Chicago Cubs win the World Series!" (no radio broadcast in 1908), and being the emcee of one of history's largest gatherings, the World Series Parade! Finally and throughout the show, we talk about how Pat's love for the game and broadcasting led him to create the audio collection called "Baseball Voices". Baseball Voices is both a tribute and historical audio collection to some of the game's greatest announcers. Check it out at www.baseballvoices.com!
