Craig Malloy is CEO of Arix Technologies, a Houston-based company specializing in robotic solutions for inspecting corrosion under insulation—or CUI—in industrial piping systems. While we often focus on aerial drones on this podcast, some environments call for a different approach. That's where Arix's flagship product, the VENUS robotic crawler, comes in. Designed to traverse both horizontal and vertical pipes, it collects high-resolution data without removing insulation or erecting scaffolding—dramatically reducing inspection time, cost, and risk. The technology has earned the trust of industry giants like Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron, proving its value in the field. Craig is a seasoned CEO with over 25 years of experience founding and scaling global tech companies, including ViaVideo, Lifesize, and Bloomfire. A pioneer in video conferencing, he led Lifesize's transformation into a global SaaS platform with 4K video and contact center solutions. Known for his customer-first mindset and servant leadership, Craig brings a unique blend of innovation, integrity, and vision to the world of robotics and industrial inspection. In this episode of the Drone Radio show, Craig talks about Arix's systems, their robotic technology used to detect corrosion under insulation and how it benefits the energy industry.

Josh is a serial entrepreneur; he's launched 4 separate tech companies since 2007.In amongst much confusion, tragedy & uncertainty, Josh saw an opportunity presented by the global pandemic - the inevitable shift of work. And more specifically, how strategies & tools need to evolve to enable communications in a hybrid setting. Together we covered a range of topics. We discussed organizations in a post-pandemic context, their shift to a digital or hybrid interface & considerations for professionals in those enterprises. About Josh: Josh Little is the founder of four tech companies–Maestro, Bloomfire, Quizzer, and Volley–that have collectively been used by hundreds of millions of people and featured in TechCrunch, Mashable, Entrepreneur, Inc., and Forbes. “If you could attend fewer meetings, would you? The answer is not in talking less, but in talking differently.”Serial entrepreneur Josh Little knows a thing or two about running successful software and technology companies. He has founded numerous global software companies, including Qzzr, Bloomfire, and Maestro eLearning. His previous stints include working at Pfizer as National Account Manager. He currently brings his entrepreneurial expertise to clients as the CEO of Volley app - a video-first platform for businesses to have efficient and productive communications.Further along, Josh has been carrying on his family's legacy for the last 10 years by making the most delicious pickles just like his great grandfather used to make.On this episode of The Shape of Work podcast, Josh clarifies what asynchronous communication is and what it isn't, and offers some great insights on async communication and remote work.We discuss with Josh:His journey from being a teacher to being the CEO of four successful tech companiesWhy async winsVolley's mission: enable the future of work and save the world from death-by-meetings. Why more companies are frustrated with the concept of Async communication for remote teamsHis thoughts on the future of the workplace Asynchronous video communication as the next big thing in the world of remote work: building a Slack challenger. Why are more companies frustrated with the concept of Async communication for remote teams? As per Josh, people have been doing things a certain way for decades. There are only two ways in which companies can communicate with their workers, which are typing (memos, email, chat) and talking (meetings, video conferences and tools like zoom). The need to talk has increased slightly because there is less proximity and less ad-hoc communication. Since a lot of people have been working remotely during the pandemic, the frequency of meetings has increased by 13%.Why do companies need to change their current ways of communicating with employees?Josh says that companies need to pick their poison, implying, they need to choose between talking and typing. However, typing is 7 times slower than talking as an average person can compose written business communication at 19 words per minute. On the other hand, an average person can speak 150 words per minute. Josh added that when you communicate through speaking, only 7 per cent of that is the words that we choose to speak, 38 per cent is how we sound when we speak and 55 percent is what I look like when you are speaking.Asynchronous video communication as the next big thing in the world of remote work: building a Slack challenger? As per Josh, Volley aims to create a hybrid of both, richness of talking and flexibility of texting, which looks like a video messaging app. It would help to deal with the major issues of remote working, namely loneliness and lack of communication. Josh stated that Loom characterizes video as a piece of content, just like YouTube. Why is Volley being a separate platform altogether and why async wins?Josh says that Volley can replace some of the meetings as on one end of the spectrum it is achromous and on the other hand, it can replace a lot of brainstorming and one on one meetings. He believes Volley can make achromous communication better to a great extent. Some teams use volley; however, according to Josh, some teams fall back into the same behaviour and use slack. Zoom is said to be the dark age of remote work.Follow Josh on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Abhash Kumar

“Trust is such a big factor in leadership, and we learn to trust by how others act and how they show up in relationships” Josh Little Communication is one of the critical elements that ensure effective collaboration and leadership. Considering the current work environment characterized by remote and hybrid working arrangements, communication between teams has become even more challenging. For these reasons and more, our guest today, Josh Little, believes in using the right technology that makes conversations more convenient and practical. In today's episode, we will discuss what asynchronous video conversation is all about and the fantastic app Volley, which is making effective communication a reality for teams. We will also learn some of the leadership qualities that our guest believes are important in fostering great relationships with team members at work. Listen in! Social Media https://www.linkedin.com/in/littlejosh/ I felt my mission in life is to create beautiful things and that could be a tech company, musical performance or a jar of pickles [2:30] There is nothing as creatively satisfying as building a company even though it is intimidating and risky. [2:43] Volley has been my most recent beautiful thing. [4:03] Thinking about how to get the right information to the right people at the right time at work, is something that I have been passionate about for years. [4:30] Leaders were going to have to adapt and figure out new strategies to lead, connect, talk and collaborate with their team. [5:00] We can't sort the problem with back to back zoom, because of burnout and fatigue. [5:08] There are so many inefficiencies with the current construct that we call meetings. [6:31] We are a lot more efficient at communicating by speaking than we are typing and for that reason at some point written communication fails. [7:10] Volley is a video messaging App that allows professionals or teams to collaborate by sending video messages back and forth. [7:42] We take turns just like any other conversation, except we record our turn with video. [7:54] This option gives us the best of both worlds that is the richness of talking and the flexibility of texting. [8:00] The beauty of Volley is we take those snippets of content and put them and call them a Volley where you create and send a Volley in a threaded conversation. [10:32] The other members in the conversation can see your Volley and respond to it. [10:42] A lot of teams have a stand up, or daily update of meeting. Instead of that being a scheduled thing, we do a stand up where everybody shows up. [10:50] We want people to try Volley, it is a new technology and new way of thinking and working. [13:00] We don't want to be so presumptuous that we just know that this is exactly the way it needs to be compiled for use at work. [13:15] So we knew a free product was necessary to the learning that we needed to do in order to create the product that we needed to create. [13:24] We have many ideas for cool features, functionality and technology that we can infuse into this experience that people will be willing to pay for. [13:53] We haven't been working remote in the past three companies, because there was friction and breakdown in communication. [16:25] I have been an aspirational remote worker and remote CEO for over a decade now so maybe VOLLEY is just me solving a problem by creating a tool that needed to exist to enable communication to just flow. [16:51] While Volley is a great way to communicate, it is really for remote or distributed teams and hybrid teams that have some remote workers. [18:06] Commercial Break [19:48] The first one is do what you say you are going to do or say something else. [20:16] The next one is playing with all cards on the table. [21:08] That is the only way that we can get to the sort of understanding and clarity of what needs to be accomplished and why that matters. [21:49] I have never been burned by vulnerability in any way. [22:12] The new one is continuous leadership or on demand leadership and this is what Volley enables. [22:28] You are only leading when interacting with your team. [22:41] What we have been experimenting with Volley is the idea of continuous leadership. [23:18] Only seven percent of communication is the words that we use, 38 percent is the tone and 55 percent is what we look like when we say those words. [25:12] We are elite athletes at this thing called conversation and we need to talk to move forward. [25:50] You should download Volley today because relationship and connectedness are important. Josh's Social Media Josh's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/littlejosh/ Company Website: https://www.volleyapp.com/ Josh's Advice I would say if you're building a company, or actually this is probably generally not just for entrepreneurs. This is for anyone who's building something meaningful, relentlessly pursue the most impactful thing. That's a really hard thing to do. But the way that I tried to do that, and I kind of have to keep resetting myself on that. Is I think about what would I think to myself this question. What would blank insert the name of your favorite entrepreneur or leader or influence? Whoever that'd be? What would? Let's say Richard Branson in this case, what would Richard Branson do today? As you get down and look at your to do's for the day and record your morning, stand up, Ask yourself, what would blank do today? Someone that you would think could do your job potentially better than you? If your answer is the things that you plan on doing well, good, then you're doing the most impactful thing. But if your answer is, and typically as for me, Richard Branson wouldn't be writing this stupid blog article and he wouldn't be following up on this thing that so and so. He would be handing that stuff off, and he'd be getting on his yacht and doing some deal at some multinational company or something like that? I don't have a yacht, but I can do my version of what Richard Branson would do. One little bit of wisdom to try to pursue the most relentlessly pursue the most impactful thing. Read the related blog article: Why Email and Zoom Are Hurting Our Teams And What Else To Use KEEP UP WITH JOSH Website: https://www.volleyapp.com/ Key Takeaways: Historically, asynchronous communications are written like email and text is; we read and respond at any time. Historically, synchronous communications are meetings; we need to be present with each other at the same time to communicate. The Volley app offers a unique opportunity for asynchronous, video communication. The problem with communicating via text and email is that it wastes a lot of time. The average person types 19 words per minute but can speak 150 words per minute. We lose about 93% of the communication that comes from voice, tone and body language. This often leads to misco
