Ep 307 Gary Barnes Gary Barnes is a High-Performance Business and Sales Strategist, National and International Speaker (over 1000 talks). A #1 International Amazon Best-Selling Author and been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS & TEDX. In 1988 Gary was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and told he would be in a wheelchair or dead within 10 years. He has flown a World War II P-51 fighter, flown on a trapeze, driven in a Destruction Derby and climbed 14,000 foot mountains. He's a drummer & Police Academy Graduate. Gary starts by talking about his adventures and how he actually dislikes the nervous energy beforehand, and much prefers the feeling after completing something, saying it's a feeling of satisfaction. He also talks about the brainwaves of fear and excitement being the same, and with his police training he has been trained to run towards gun fire. Gary tells an amazing story about going to see Zig Ziglar at one of his last appearances in Denver and how two ladies behind him were ragging on him after the show. This helped Gary realize that if Zig Ziglar couldn't capture and entire audience, there was no hope for him, so his mindset switched to if he could help one person, that's enough for him. Later, Gary talks about getting on stage and when people ask him how it went he tells them to ask someone in the attendance because he doesn't know what he said because he was in the moment. You're looking for a relationship with audience and your conversation to be the same both on and off stage. Kirsten asks Gary about training speakers and the impact he's making. Gary explains that it was happy accident after the success of his financial planning firm. People began to ask him how he grew his business to such a high level and began trading his knowledge for hamburgers! He talks about how he blends life into his business coaching. Gary also talks about his style of coaching which is to ask a lot of questions and tailor it to the client, rather than telling them to do it his way. Gary goes into detail about some of the issues he has with writing given his condition which doesn't allow him to type quickly, where his brain moves much quicker. So instead he uses a software called Dragon which allows him to speak and it transcribes for him, so he was able to speak his book. ‘Make a difference' is part of Gary's mission statement, as well as to empower. He explains he isn't looking to connect his power to you but to help you connect the power which is already within you. He goes on to talk about how when doing his chaplaincy he had to deal with his mortality through writing his own epitaph, which helped him have the mindset like Steven Covey said, ‘start with the end in mind'. Later, Kirsten asks Gary what challenges he's going through right now. Gary explains his challenge is with a word he adopted a few years ago which is expansion and the expansion of opportunity. She recommends breaking everything down into manageable chunks, having some patience and not comparing yourself to anything. Gary shares his final words of wisdom, which came to him in a dream, which is ‘are you a spectator or are you a participant?' There will be times when you're a spectator and that's ok, but it's important to think about your engagement and whether your participating to the fullest extent. Meena Kumari Adnani is an international High Performance & Business Coach for women, a motivational speaker, and a best-selling author.  She is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales and an attorney in New York. For 25 years she held senior-level positions in high-profile companies. Her amazing story is about losing all of the wealth that she made as a Lawer ever since graduation due to trusting the wrong person to manage money. Meena has managed to find strength, change her career and make the same money back in just two years, as an entrepreneur. Meena starts by telling us her story, explaining how she has pivoted from practicing law and has focused on doing business development, sales and marketing for quite some time now. In 2016, Meena received a call from her financial manager saying she had lost everything, her multiple six figures went down to zero, leaving her with nothing. She talks about how it changed her forever and how it made her become more aligned with her higher self. Through hard work, she managed to build herself back up in 2 years to 7 figures. Kirsten asks about what Meena found within herself during that period. She explains how her legal background helped her look at things in an objective way. She took personal responsibility for what happened and asked herself what part she played, rather than looking at others and blaming them or blaming circumstances. Meena says that if she had taken the time to understand wealth and taken the responsibility, she would not have had the belief she was good with money. Talking about the impact she is making in the world, Meena explains how she works with women entrepreneurs, working one on one as well as having a personal empowerment program called Empowered Women Academy, which helps women shift their mindset. She also helps women build success and create wealth through building self-belief. A challenge Meena is having right now is finding the right people to help the business grow, such as social media managers and virtual assistants, which she partly puts on herself as she has not given herself the time to look. Kirsten recommends leaders getting really clear about the tasks someone will be doing, and working out whether those tasks can live within one person. The once you have decided how many people you need, you can focus on what the specific skill set they need is. Meena finishes off with some words of wisdom as she shares with us to never stop growing. In order for you to reach that next level, you yourself have to grow to that next level. Barbara adds they work with families who are married who are experiencing challenges keeping it all together and keeping their romance alive, while balancing work. Given Kirsten's husband is 16 years younger than her, she is very interested in Michael's longevity work! Michael talks about the dramatic effects menopause has on the woman's body and how it can lower libido. Michael says he uses natural hormones which are bioidentical to help you live a healthier longer life, rather than synthetics, which can do the opposite. Barbara goes into some detail about their workshops and some of the strategies they give to couples. Kirsten suggests finding the right people you can trust to be around and help make the key decisions. Kirsten also suggests a bunch more solutions such as looking towards people who are willing to put in the work and understanding the importance of it, as well as business owners who may be susceptible to life balance issues. Finally, the guys share their words of wisdom, with Barbara sharing with us that no matter how you feel, there is a way to grow your relationship and have it be magnificent. She also found when she was pregnant at 29 she had a second autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Whitney explains her current challenge is messaging and how she feels like she is missing a large portion of people who don't realise their condition is autoimmune. Kirsten suggests targeting some particular symptoms of autoimmune rather than using that phrase to make people realise that's what they have and get their attention with what their life could be like with autoimmune treatment   Finally, Whitney finishes off with her words of advice, which are realising it's not about her. EP 260 Health Insurance in the US Pre to Post ACA Affordable Care Act or Obamacare I've been purchasing my own health insurance for more than 20 years and also have an HR background – Want to share from my unique perspective some of what you might not realize As it is with communication about all challenges today it seems that all anyone will do is talk about the negatives from either side in an attempt to “win”, tear the “other side” down. I actually had an experience where an elected official was holding a virtual town hall.  Topic was health insurance.  I “raised” my hand to share my thoughts.  I'm pretty sure I was vetted out.  A staff member spoke with me before I was able to go live.  They asked my thoughts and then told me they likely would not have time for me to comment.  The town hall lasted for a very long time while constituents shared positive views only about the ACA. So, here's my personal, been there, done that perspective. As with all complex programs there are both positive and negative. I'm not going to share a bunch of legal-eze.  These are my personal thoughts, experiences, and opinions.  I hope it will bring a balanced & realistic perspective. Used to be able to join the Farm Bureau – or some other organization/group to receive a group rate.  Able to personally purchase a plan with coverage similar to an employer plan. Group Experience Ratings Personal Experience Ratings Pre-Existing Conditions – Insurer of Last Resort  Young Adult Ryders Coverages – Childbirth, Mental Health, Substance Use Disorders Required Coverage – Supposed to be a part of keeping coverage rates down.  Assure that pool of covered included premiums from healthy. Low-users - My opinion-  did more to increase profits  Deductibles - Negotiated Rates –  My opinion - Profits – High cost – high deductibles – Departments focused on denying coverage – Required Coverage to make sure the pool was healthy and unhealthy -  MyImpactAcademy.com/Call MyImpactAcademy.com/Join

EP 258 Examine Your Emotions  Emotions are good.  They give us information.  But, they are different from fact.  If your entire life is dictated by your emotions, you may be all over the road.  An emotional roller coaster is not amusing for you or those around you.  Moods and emotions can shift with more than just our circumstance.  Sometimes we are just eating the wrong foods or lacking sleep.  And without healthy boundaries in your relationships, your emotions can swing along with the people in your life.   Misaligned frustration taken out on a co-worker, family member or friend can lead to unnecessary conflict that may require you to go into clean up mode.   And the emotion of anger can really wreak havoc.  You probably already know this but anger usually is not the real emotion.  More often you are actually scared, sad, disappointed, or your ego might be bruised Anger can be a very toxic emotion.  Too often we let it build up.  One hundred tiny offenses left unaddressed to fester can create an atomic bomb size blow up.  And the spew will be aimed at the offending party or an unlucky uninvolved recipient.  It could be the woman working the drive thru window.   Or, perhaps your habit is to ignite huge anger for even the tiniest infraction.  Small incidents made bigger can have you reacting and angry most of your day.   Recently, a family business client shared that when he visits one of their locations he makes a point to walk around and say hello to everyone.  “Last Friday”, he continued, “my brother responded with ……an expletive.” I looked at the brother and in a sarcastic tone he shared, “He walks around all cheerful saying, ‘good morning' to everyone.  It's so annoying!” The story he created in his mind generated an outburst not at all consistent with the mere facts.   You might read that and laugh but I ask, are there times when you are reacting bigger than you need to? Anger takes energy and is not fun to be around.  The waitress forgot your drink.  Is that really worth the incensed, eye roll reaction? Maybe you can give her grace and move on with your day. I ask clients to consider emotions objectively.  Never stuff them but don't treat them as fact.  If your energy dips and you are having, “one of those days,” know that it is your choice to stay there or not.   Here's some food for thought to  Is the focus of the feeling misdirected?  Is there a reason beyond my current circumstance that generated this feeling?  Have I been triggered by a past hurt, am I hungry or tired?  Is there an alternative way to think about an incident?  Maybe it's funny rather than aggravating.  Is that small error worthy of your energy or can you let it go and move on.  I always say, “Don't let anyone zap your joy!”  Why let a small something put a damper on your day?  You get to choose. Speak up when it's warranted.  Don't let a build up of small things that could be handled one at a time to create a volcano.  How many great days are you losing as you collect those annoyances rather than address them? Create a rule.  If I'm not willing to talk about it must not be worthy of my energy to be mad.   The bible reveals a similar sentiment: Take Action Task Where are you letting emotions get the best of you?  Do you have anger you need to release?   MyImpactAcademy.com/Join

EP 238 How are Your Personal Stories Shaping Your Future? Poker Face – You might think you have one.  But, do you? A few years ago we did a super fun family photo shoot! We laughed, created memories and captured wonderful pictures that still hang on our walls.   A portion of the photos were done in an area of a park where you can feed wild birds. While my husband and boys looked like Disney Princes as they calmly gazed upon the birds eating from their hands, we discovered quickly that I was not capable of this response.  The wonder and awe I felt as these birds landed on my hand showed on my face EVERY time.  It was spontaneous, authentic and unavoidable for me. And it led to LOTS of laughter! It gets me thinking about non-verbal communication. I CLEARLY am not capable of a good Poker Face.  Some are much better at times but…the reality is, even with practice, our facial expressions, body positioning, voice tone and tempo give away more than we realize.   The reality is that our non-verbal communication constitutes more than 90% of our message!  That's why, contrary to how some coach or train, my communication coaching begins with a shift in story and mindset rather than just words.   The happenings in our mind transmit whether we want them to or not.  I can tell someone what to say but that just isn't enough.  Practicing strategies to help you master  your thoughts  and the stories you tell yourself about your experiences and your relationships,  the words you use in your mind These all play a powerful part of our communication and ultimately your relationships.   So, notice first the message you are giving yourself within your mind.  Think about how these words and thoughts will shape your emotions and actions.  This shapes your response to life and those around you and how you craft the words you'll use. Are the words and stories that happen in your mind serving you, helping you feel empowered or are you constantly a victim, angry, defensive and feeling powerless to impact life circumstances? I've helped many reshape thoughts about their lives and this has been the powerful beginning of reshaping their futures.  Need additional help with this?  Reach out! I'm here to help. 236 Key Why's & How's of Celebrating Your Team

EP 236 Key Why's & How's of Celebrating Your Team  Summary:  To create a great culture you must pair accountability with celebration, praise and recognition.  As leaders we and, as an extension, our teams, can become extremely task oriented, which is good.  However, with a full focus on outcomes leaders can unintentionally miss opportunities to acknowledge progress or celebrate success.  In this circumstance, the team just moves immediately from one task and project to the next and there's lost opportunity to unite as a community, acknowledge accomplishments and celebrate.  Years ago, someone asked me what my definition of success was.  At first it seemed like a really simple question.  Once I started thinking about it, however, I realized it was more complex.  In the end, after much contemplation, I arrived at a definition that has served me since.  Success is best defined with a perfect blend of celebration for what you've achieved and some discontent that ignites excitement about what will come next.   Focusing on only what comes next leaves you constantly yearning for a future that hasn't happened yet, always driving towards achievement to relieve your discontent.     Living with only celebration for what has already occurred, however, can leave you feeling unmotivated. I did that big thing. Now what? And it's also a full focus on the past.  A healthy team needs a blend of both. Most often it is the celebration side of the equation that gets less attention. As we work to do more with smaller teams our busyness, understandably, has us hyper-focusing on task completion.  And, when challenges, hiccups or emergencies arise we must shift our attention there for an immediate reaction and response. So, be intentional about building in praise. Celebration, recognition and praise can be simple and don't have to require a lot of time or planning.   As you integrate celebration, make sure it is spread throughout the organization. Most teams engage in activities that require participation from individuals across departments. Some work behind the scenes while others are more front and center. No team functions well without the whole and every task is important.  There is a tendency to focus on the people or departments at the front of the effort and a missed opportunity to show gratitude for those working behind the scenes.  This can create division within the organization. Humans will work to win accolades, sometimes even subconsciously. Recognition that focuses too much on those at the front may motivate teams to prioritize their own work over where they can support from behind.  The thought, “If I can focus on our team's agenda perhaps we will be acknowledged.” This can delay important organization work. Instead make appreciation and acknowledgement abundant. Get teams working together towards common goals rather than working to meet their own departmental agendas first. I believe that there is an innate human desire to be known, acknowledged and appreciated.  When gratitude is a scarce resource you end up fostering a “what about me” syndrome.  Any little crumb of acknowledgement or appreciation to one person leaves others thinking, “yes, but what about me?”  Humans yearn for appreciation when it is lacking.  For the good of the team, the goal is to spread gratitude abundantly but authentically.    Focus on looking for reasons to celebrate.  From a perception perspective, our brains are miraculous!  They are able to take in millions of pieces of data in every second.  As humans, we are only able to focus on about 6 to 7 pieces of data at once, however.  We train our brains to keep certain data available for ready access.  We get to choose which data to notice, retain and act on.  There are opportunities for you to thank your team.  You just may not be in the habit of looking.  If this is the case, re-train your brain by practicing.  Seek out a set number of opportunities to appreciate someone weekly or daily.   Maybe you are unwilling to thank people for some reason.  Some clients I've worked with are uncomfortable giving praise.  If this is you, work on it or seek out a coach who can help you.  Either way, choosing to look for things to celebrate will help you re-align your focus to the positive things happening.  There are plenty.   Celebration is an important element to bringing a team together.  Look how excited football players get during a game! Grown men high five and pat each other.  Celebration motivates everyone towards a common goal.  Set achievable goals and then celebrate when you achieve them.  Celebration doesn't have to mean party hats and champagne.  It can be ringing a bell, playing a victory song, high fiving, sending out a congratulations email to the team, writing out a card, having a pizza lunch. Individual acknowledgement can come in many forms.  Employees who are asked to weigh in on an idea or participate in designing the roll out of a new program feel trusted and valued.  You can also provide opportunities for team members to present at organization events or to your Board.  New and special opportunities are a great way to help someone feel special. Recommendations: Show plenty of appreciation to all. Make recognition abundant but authentic. Catch employees doing something good and let them know. Make sure that acknowledgments after events or program rollouts include both the front and center teams and the employees who worked in the background. Leaders, change your mindset.  Be on the lookout for the good every day. Create specific goals daily or weekly to show authentic appreciation. Take a moment to acknowledge the cool things happening. Even if it's in a small way. Hit a gong or bell or send out a group email when something goes well.  Utilize “Wow” Boards, a place to showcase letters of appreciation from customers and thank you's from employees to their team mates. Seek out ways to reward employees with special opportunities to represent the organization, speak at an event or attend or share at a Board Meeting. Time with you or other leaders in your team is also likely a coveted reward. MyImpactAcademy.com/Join
