More than 10,000 turfgrass professionals are meeting in San Diego this week, for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Conference and Trade Show, the largest event of its kind. The GCSAA show has been a staple for Dean Piller, longtime superintendent of Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, British Columbia.“Well, I think to be successful in anything you do in your life, you need to have connections and build strong relationships with friends,” he said. “People and companies that you can rely on. I've built those relationships coming to this show for 35 years, and I look forward to it every year.”New technology is of interest of many attendees. Piller has long utilized Redox TurfRx™ products, and recently added TurfRx™ OsmoPro, which generated excellent results.Longtime industry agronomist Scott Poynot attended along with two superintendents he works with in Louisiana – Kiwi Robinson of Pelican Point Golf Course and Scott LeBouef with Farm d'Allie Golf Club.Like many superintendents in their region, Robinson and LeBouef needed quick action to deal with a rare heavy snowstorm early this year. They said the Redox TurfRx products they employed helped their greens come through the cold and snowy conditions without any significant issues.
Nick has been attending the Homesteaders of America Conference for three years. It has been going on for eight years and is always very well attended by thousands of people from all over the country and even from other countries. Amy Fewell and her team do a great job. This year, Amy called Nick and told him that the insurance company had denied their policy and mentioned Nick by name as the reason. He told Amy that the event was too important and that, if needed, she should take him off the list of speakers. Amy flat-out refused. On this episode of Club + Resort Talks, Rob Thomas speaks with Alicia Nissel, General Manager of The Downtown Clubs in Houston, Texas. Nissel discusses what the club does to attract and retain members, as well as looking into her crystal ball to see what the industry can expect five or 10 years down the road. Rob and Senior Editor Phil Keren also discussed two golf industry conferences that are happening in January: The 2024 PGA Show is Jan. 23-26 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Conference and Trade Show is slated for Jan. 29-Feb. 1 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Ariz. The operative word for this year's PGA Show — the largest global gathering for the business of golf — is “more.” The event will offer a packed show floor with more participating companies, more exhibit space, pavilion enhancements and a new concert lounge in Hall E of the convention center. The GCSAA Conference and Trade Show is the biggest annual event covering the design, construction and management of the course. It is designed for golf course superintendents, architects, builders and the companies that support them. Rob and Phil also talked about a company CEO and his friends teaming up to open a new racquet facility in Minnesota. The Heights Racquet & Social Club in Mendota Heights, Minn., features pickleball courts and Minnesota's first padel court. An additional item of discussion was the opening of ‘Crossroads,' Palmetto Bluff, S.C.'s new reversible nine-hole course from the golf architecture firm, King-Collins Golf Course Design.

Golf has been enjoyed for generations around the world, and turf is a vital part of the playing experience.Thousands gathered in Orlando, Florida this month, for the annual Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Conference. The GCSAA has been around for nearly a century, and their conference and trade show brought together industry experts from throughout the US and around the world. In addition to a showcase of new products and technology, increasing industry sustainability was a common theme.“It's more important than ever and it's only going to get more important,” remarked Tom Coyne, best-selling author who gave a talk in the booth of Aquatrols, which partners with Redox to market turf products. “In the golf industry, we have to do more with less, and water is at the very top of that list.”“It's absolutely number one,” said Michael Fance, Technical Support and European Account Manager with Aquatrols. “Legislation is really, really harsh in my trading area, so the eyes of the world are on nitrates in water, etcetera.” He said their products provide a major boost to this effort, aligning nitrogen reduction with improved turf health.Another key issue with turf is helping fight off abiotic stress. How to fight it depends on several factors, but there are effective solutions available.“It really does depend on what stress we're trying to address,” said Graham O'Connor, European Business Manager at Aquatrols. “What we've found is that, when we can home in on whatever it is, then we have a product that's a “go to” to deal with an issue. Then people say ‘well, let's look at more. Let's look at something else. We want to see what else is on this line, because it has ticked that box.'”Whatever the challenge, Redox and Aquatrols gain great satisfaction in providing valuable tools to healthy golf course turf.Ken Maltby, Senior Superintendent of Florida's Grand Cypress Resort, has been a satisfied Redox customer for nearly a decade.“Once you get on a steady program, then you can adjust your rates, you actually start using less product almost, once you address those soil issues” he said. “That's another great value of having the Redox products is the adjustability or compatibility with all of the products they have.”
