In today's episode I have a very interesting interview with my guest, Elena, about her inspiring career change transition.Elena started her career in higher education, which she found to be slow-paced, so she then shifted to corporate learning, working with the younger generation. In 2019, Elena explains while she was based in Dubai she co-founded a company call Bessern with a business partner. Bessern focuses on performance well-being in organisations. She was also involved in various other projects, such as building up talent pipelines for small companies.Elena shares that in the beginning of her career transition, she didn't really have a strategy, "Having an idea about what you want to do is a starting point, it doesn't have to be all mapped out, but consider what you like, what you don't like and what things give you energy." Elena talks about being mindful of not making an 'emotional' decision. We often want to make a change when we're in a state of emotional burnout but this isn't the best place to be making a decision from. Be self-aware and honest with yourself, ask yourself "what am I running away from and what I am running towards?"Elena has always had a side hustle and over the years corporate learning and development has been one of them. "I have always been experimenting, I always had a 9-5, but I was creating opportunities for myself, by doing random projects and paid or unpaid work".Towards the end of 2019 she started to get a lot of clients of her own, which meant she would have to take time off work and use her vacation time to do sessions. She started thinking maybe this was the time to do this full time, as she was feeling overwhelmed with her work. What you will learn:Identifying roles you are interested in: If you have an idea you are interested in, be open to it. Experiment with it, find platforms and networks that can support your journey. The importance of networking: Source opportunities, either paid or voluntary, to build confidence in areas which you think your confidence or experience is lacking.Creating opportunities for yourself: Experiment with your idea, try different ways to achieve your goal. If your organization doesn't prioritize employee recognition, you're missing out on a big boost to your bottom line. Organizations provide various benefits and compensations to employees for their splendid work. From lunches to gift cards small goodies always seem like the right package. But do employees really want and appreciate these small goodies? First of all randomly giving out gift cards usually does more damage than good. Often we see a companies do this and they have these recognition programs around performance. It usually happens once a year which leaves many employees demotivated with reduced productivity. So a better way to do a recognition program is to identify a set of values, for example, and what are the behaviors of those values look like that you would expect of someone who actually deserves a recognition award. Secondly it is important for companies to realize that monetary benefits alone wont motivate employees or make them happy. Recognition in front of others is what matters the most to employees. A simple ovation, as simple clapping in front of others can pull it out quite nicely in order to have sustainable engagement of stainable motivation of people. This video also talks about the importance of recognition to be peer drive. Lastly, the reward system is actually in the brain located in the amygdala, where we feel emotions, to start or stop doing a particular task based on how it makes us feel. So when something feels good a fall, of course, we want to do more of it, be better at it and get that feeling again, and when we experience something unpleasant, our brain is not a fan of that. So it will steer us away from that activity in the future to the best of its ability. So by giving recognition to your employees simply put an even better peer recognizing them. In recent times the data that has been coming in from a number of reports around the world have shown that employees are more engaged in the workplace. Many companies have on their websites that the people are their biggest asset and now an engaged and purpose driven workforce will deliver higher productivity and loyalty. However workplaces have to work out their strategies in real by creating awareness amongst employees to a whole new level. A healthy and productive workplace from all aspects should be the goal of every organization today. Chris mentions that it is important for a company to focus on the disengaged people as they tend to bring down the levels of productivity easily. They might just tend to sit there and work because it is part of their work ethic not because they are actually engaging or being productive. It is very necessary to identify these people as they can bring down the morale of a team. It is a challenge for companies to create this hybrid workplace and to take into account all the members different ways of working. On of the most important element that a company can follow is to be flexible and adaptive in times of uncertainty or change. Flexibility can only be followed when there is trust within the team members and when the team members trust their leader. Hence building an environment of trust and well-being where employees feel that they can approach their boss without thinking twice is very important. Chris also stresses about the importance of working in collaboration. The well-being community is the most collaborative community and it is very essential for every company to have one. They help the company create happy and engaged workplaces. The company should make sure each individual is able to link their personal interests to that of the companies motives. The younger workforce today particularly the Gen Z's are lookin for a sense of purpose within their workplace. They are more than just the financial need and want to feel like they are makin a difference with the work they do. Hence linking purpose and well-being should definitely be a part of talent attraction for workplaces today. Lastly, it is very important for every leader to develop consistent routines to be emotionally intelligent and capable of displaying empathy. Training and other learning activities should take place in organizations as it is essential for every people's manager to develop their soft skills.
