On today's show, Calvin and Alex analyze the rhetoric and politics of the 2024 presidential election in terms of a particularly significant job this cycle: the vice president, or veep! We begin by discussing Vice President Kamala Harris's meteoric rise to the Democratic nomination following President Biden's departure from the race, as well as Harris's conspicuous similarities to HBO's fictional Veep, Selena Meyer (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus). We then compare and contrast the aesthetics, rhetorical styles, and political stances of Harris's vice presidential nominee and Minnesota governor Tim Walz, and Republican veep nominee and Donald Trump's running mate J.D. Vance. Along the way, we discuss how the Democratic Party under Harris and Walz is embracing a rhetoric of normalcy vs. “weirdness” that is genuinely novel and effective as a strategy for delegitimizing GOP policy, and how this approach may help to expand the Democratic voting base in response to state-level crises over reproductive justice and public education. We theorize the Dems' normalizing discourse as a way of forthrightly indexing liberal values and connecting to core American ideographs while also positioning themselves as outsiders fighting a noble cause against entrenched GOP power in state governments and the national judiciary. Written communication is an easy way to improve any team's communication, and allows both professional and practice to record, store, and access notes, instructions, and other written resources. If you want your team to be more productive and successful, you should encourage effective written communication at your dental practice. In this episode, we'll discuss the differences between synchronous and asynchronous communication, the benefits of asynchronous communication, and why dental teams should move toward asynchronous communication. We also talk about the WhatsApp group culture, used as a communication tool nowadays. Last week, I focused on Verbal Communication Skills to Enhance Promotability; today I'm covering Written Communication Skills. Once again, I want to start with an assessment – these are great questions to ask yourself. From there, I recommend you pick the area that you felt the least confident about and set a 90-day goal for improvement. 1.    How well can I anticipate and predict possible causes for written confusion and miscommunication, and how good am I at dealing with them upfront? 2.    How often do recipients fully understand my messages, emails, or other documents? Do I give enough information and detail? 3.    Can I use communication platforms such as email to quickly and efficiently communicate complex issues? 4.    Do people often misunderstand my messages? Am I often surprised that they don't understand what I have written? Let's review the four steps to the communication process as they apply to written communication: -The words you write (correct word usage, punctuation, context) -What you meant by those words (which is more challenging without visual cues – remember that only 7% of communication is the actual words you use) -The words the receiver reads (the reader's facility with the language, eyesight, communication device i.e. phone, tablet) -What the receiver makes those words mean (experience, cultural differences, their thoughts about you/the subject matter) There are four types of written communication: -Informational – You are conveying information to someone who needs to know that information. No response is required, except perhaps acknowledgment of receipt or any questions.  -Instructional – You are educating someone on something they need to know. Again - no response is required, except perhaps acknowledgment of receipt or any questions.  -Transactional – You are conveying something to someone else, with the expectation of a response. The mistake many people make with this type of communication is not clearly conveying that a response is expected and the nature of that response.  -Persuasive – You are communicating the benefits of a product, service, person, or idea to elicit a specific response, such as buying the product or service or voting for the candidate. This type of communication requires a clear call to action.   Next, let's dig into specific written communication issues you may have and ways to improve. 1.    If you struggle with grammar, spelling, and punctuation: -You may want to take a short course to help you with this.  -Read a lot – it doesn't matter what, as long as it's well written. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, and punctuation.  -Do NOT depend on Spell Check. -Take advantage of a tool like Grammarly. -Practice writing. -Read your writing out loud.   2.    If you struggle with clarity and structure in your writing:  -If the message is complex, outline it. -Get to the point. -Determine the best method for conveying this message – should it even be in writing? If so, is it an email, a memorandum, a white sheet?  -Anticipate your reader's questions. -Read out loud. -Ask someone else to read your writing and tell you what they think you're trying to communicate. -Don't over-explain. -Eliminate filler words and phrases in the editing phase.  -Eliminate redundancy (State of Florida, previous experience, final conclusion)  -Go easy on the prepositional phrases (“reflected” instead of “was a reflection of,” “of the results of the quarter” can be changed to “this quarter's results” – which also puts it in active rather than passive voice) -Avoid padding weak words with adverbs (instead of “mostly right” you could write “had excellent points,” instead of “please respond quickly,” try being more specific with a date).  -Take a business writing course – I did in graduate school, and it was one of the best courses in my Master's degree. This episode I speak with Brian Bowman, learning strategist, capability expert and digital learning guru in Australia Pacific on how a leader can have a career conversation with their direct reports. When my company, Brainpower Training, won a tender to deliver customized Report Writing for Audit workshops in multiple cities for one of Australia's largest banks, Brian Bowman held a People and Culture role at that bank. We worked together closely to roll out those Report Writing programs. TALKING POINTS [6:40] So the career conversation for the leader is actually themselves having to step out of the day-to-day and ask, “Where do you want to go?” [7:30] Good questions to ask . . . “What brings you joy?” Because it gets people to think about, “When I'm in flow, when I'm really enjoying work, this is what I'm doing.” ”What are you drawn to?” is another really great question. People will naturally gravitate across their work day to things they really love and enjoy doing. You can ask people, “What do you want to do at work?” [11:00] The joy question can be offset with, “What do you hate doing?” It's such a brilliant way of exploring that career conversation. [13:00] Careers aren't linear, they might do a bit over here or something there. [14:00] People have different stages of their career. There might be a 3-year cycle. Charles Handy talks about the Sigmoid Curve, the S-curve. [15:46] Don't wait for someone's motivation to wane; change before you have to, always give a sense of progression to people in their career. To re-motivate people, start a second curve, [16:44] It's an interesting conundrum for leaders, how do I help people grow and drive their career? I want to retain and deliver great work across an organization but training people up might make them leave. [18:19] In the future it's helping people translate their impact in their career where they've been and what they would also bring to that next cycle of impact. [19:16] Younger people might ask for a promotion or more money, but maybe they haven't sailed in the storm yet. They say things like, “I do the same work as . . .” another. "Well, the other has 15 years' experience and hoisted the sails in the storm and survived and sailed it. Yes, you are doing the same job. But I know if something went wrong, they'll manage it appropriately." Each person writes on an envelope the date, they sign, they write their own name on the envelope, and then they put the envelope to the right, and they get another envelope with the name of another person. And then they write for the next person how much they appreciate them, as many things as possible. And when they receive it, I ask them 2 questions. One question is, “How do you feel?” And the second question, “What surprised you?” Nina, you would be amazed how many people are totally surprised that other people appreciate them. In this throwback episode from season one of the Building the Black Educator Pipeline Podcast, Dr. Gholdy Muhammad joined the show to break down the rich history of Black educational excellence and how it can help reframe the way we think about curriculum and instruction today. Dr. Gholnecsar (Gholdy) Muhammad is an Associate Professor of Literacy, Language, and Culture at the University of Illinois Chicago, where she studies Black historical excellence within educational communities. Dr. Muhammad's scholarship has appeared in leading academic journals and books, including Research in the Teaching of English, Urban Education, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Language Arts, and Written Communication. She has led a federal grant with the United States Department of Education to study culturally and historically responsive literacy in STEM classrooms.Dr. Muhammad is also the author of Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy, in which she presents the concept of Historically Responsive Literacy, derived from the study of literacy development within 19th-century Black literacy societies. In this episode, Dr. Muhammad explains how this framework is essential and universal for all students, especially youth of color, who traditionally have been marginalized in learning standards, school policies, and classroom practices.

BILL YATES:  That's true.  Now we're in a remote workforce more so than ever.  So many of us are working virtually.  So what do you do?  You pop open Slack.  You pop open Skype.  And you pop open Teams.  And you just instant message with your team back and forth, back and forth.  Which many times that's totally appropriate.  I think as Rob will get into, we have a number of different tools at our disposal.  You've got to pick the right tool for the right message, or you're going to get into trouble. WENDY GROUNDS:  Right, right.  I'm excited to talk to Rob.  A little bit about him before we get there is he's the founder of a global learning company called Emphasis, which specializes in written communication.  Some of his high-profile clients have been Big 4 accounting firms, big tech, big pharma.  He's also done some work with the U.K. Prime Minister's office at 10 Downing Street, and even the royal household at Buckingham Palace.  So we're in good company. Rob's Background Story WENDY GROUNDS:  Rob, before we get into our conversation on written communication, can you tell us how you got into this field and what your background is? ROB ASHTON:  I started off as a research scientist before a love of words led me into publishing.  So originally trained as an editor.  And I did that for a while, and I found that I guess I just got a little tired of applying the same techniques again and again to the words I was trying to knock into shape.  And I decided that instead of doing that, I would go and teach people to do it.  So I set up a training company to do that, and that was called Emphasis.  And that was 23 years ago. And then six years ago I decided that I would go back to my roots, and I would start to look at the science of this because there's very little out there on the science of written communication, or at least in the business world.  There's a ton of stuff out there in the academic world,

Email, social media, website copy, and more, all rely upon good communication. Here are some key points to remember: It's not about you, it's about your reader and what this will do for them. Write the way you talk in a normal, conversational tone. Summarize your message in just one or two sentences.   If you can't sum it up, then you don't have a clear message to communicate. Gain clarity on your message then rewrite it. Avoid the story format as it takes longer and buries the lead. Write it once, and then review and rewrite it several times.  Remove adverbs and other extraneous words. Use numbers where possible as it makes the message stronger and more compelling. Writing takes practice and is a skill that will help you greatly in your fundraise. Here’s JP. It is great to be with you today. The topic today is the best advice I have ever received. I had a great discussion with our team the other day, and I'm going to give you some of their thoughts. At the very end, I'll add some of my special spice to the topic. I'm going to break this down into two areas. One is sales and marketing advice that our team has received over the years. The second one is more about things like productivity and personal preparation. Sales and Marketing Advice The best way to listen is to take notes. Silences are okay. In fact, after you put the price out there and the big part of the value proposition shut up and be quiet. Oftentimes, the next guy that talks loses. It is also important to make sure to smile, especially when you're on the phone. A lot of us have gone through training where they recommend having a mirror for you to look into and smile as you speak on the phone. It's a great tactic. Although it may make you uncomfortable or seem corny, it's not a bad idea. During negotiations, identify what the most important thing is to the other party and what's the most important thing to you. Sometimes you can give things away or offer things in negotiation that aren't really that important to you. Establish a Meaningful Network I've seen this before, when I've looked to hire someone in sales for an example. I go on to their LinkedIn profile, and they have less than 100 connections. Why would I want to connect with someone that doesn't really care to know people? I'm not sure they would be a very good salesperson if they're not interested in other individuals. It's All About the Prospect and Preparation When talking to prospects or costumers, discuss solutions rather than the services that you provide. So many times in the association space, for example, I see where it's all about the association and the committees and what they do. That does not really demonstrate how we help our members save money, make money, or save them time. Prepare and research calls in advance. Never wing it, especially in sales and interviews. This advice was actually offered by my college daughter who's going through the interview process. She always prepares for the interviews. One time, she listened to an interview that I was having with someone. Clearly this person was a professional and they'd been in this game for years, but they didn't know me from the man on the moon. That's not against me, that's more on them. You want me to help you, you want me to hire you. And clearly you don't even know what we do as a company. Written Communication and Proactivity Deliver the message in the first and second sentence and then support it through the rest of the document. Very important as people are reading things in mobile, and reading emails. If you get up and you let everybody take your time, your priorities are not going to be addressed. And often that's because you're not proactive and you haven't determined what your primary goals are. BIO: Dr. Gholnecsar “Gholdy” Muhammad is the associate professor at Georgia State University teaching literacy and language in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education. She also serves as the director of the GSU Urban Literacy Collaborative & Clinic and is the author of “Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy”. She began her career as a reading, language arts and social studies middle school teacher in Cahokia, Illinois. After teaching in the classroom, she served as a school district assistant curriculum director and was responsible for kindergarten through 12th-grade literacy instruction, grant writing, assessments and professional development. Muhammad received her Ph.D. in literacy, language and culture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research interests are situated in social and historical foundations of literacy development within Black communities and the writing practices among Black women and girls. She explores 19th-century Black literary societies to understand literacy development and how the roles of literacy can be reconceptualized in classrooms today. She became interested in this line of research when she led a summer writing institute with Black girls called, Black Girls WRITE!. She continues to hold summer literacy programs with Black and Brown youth as well as Muslim girls. She explores how historical practices among communities of color can be used with adolescent learners today. Some of the journals she has published articles in include, Research in the Teaching of English, English Education, Urban Education, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy and Written Communication. Additionally, she serves as the director of the Georgia State Urban Literacy Collaborative and Clinic. She strives to shape the national conversation for educating youth who have been underserved. She also strives to support the next generation of educators who are seeking pathways to meet some of the most pressing challenges encountered in urban schools. She works with teachers and youth across the United States and South Africa in best practices in literacy instruction. She is a former school board president and continues to work collaboratively with local schools across communities in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Muhammad is the 2014 recipient of the National Council of Teachers of English, Promising New Researcher Award, the 2015 NCTE Alan C. James Schramko here. Today, I want to share with you a tool that I use and I know some members of my team use to have better communication. Maybe you're not a great typist, maybe you can't spell very well, but the good news is there are tools and one is called Grammarly, and it sits in your computer browser. I use a Chrome extension and it will help correct or make suggestions as I type. And you can use the free version and it's just fine. As you type, if the word's not quite right, it will suggest the correct version and you can just click on it and it will replace it. This is a great tool to use if you're posting in forums or on social media or sending emails because even if it's not your first skill, spelling, at least you'll come across as reasonably professional even though that people who obsess too much about spelling usually are very flawed in some other area but it doesn't hurt to have a good minimum standard. I've been using Grammarly this year after seeing one of my team members use it, and it really is an easy tool to use, and it will get you great results. See our products HERE

Written communication is a significant part of how we work in business.  It is obvious when you look at how much of an MBA program includes writing.  Many companies even push business writing classes as part of their employee training. Let Us Count The Ways We write emails every day.  This is an excellent place to work on writing fundamentals.  These include spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and even flow.  Short form platforms like Twitter and text messages use a form of shorthand and do not emphasize spelling or grammar,  Nevertheless, try to stick to proper writing standards with these where possible.  It will serve as challenging practice to try to maintain these skills.  There will also be a marked difference in your communications when they are professional looking among a flurry of less than stellar notes.   Practice, Practice, Practice The more you work on a task, the better you get.  Writing is no different.  You may want to rely on how much writing you do in your job to improve your skills.  This is not the best approach.  Your practice should push your skills and stretch your topics.  This approach will not only help your ability to communicate; it can lead to a side hustle or new career paths.

MTSU's Department of English hosts an annual event called the Peck Research on Writing Symposium. In 2016, that symposium featured a presentation by Dr. Derek Mueller, Associate Professor of Written Communication and Director of the First-Year Writing Program at Eastern Michigan University. This episode features an interview recorded during his visit. Mueller's work has appeared in the journals College Composition and Communication, Composition Forum, Kairos, and Present Tense. He has two forthcoming book projects: Cross-Border Networks in Writing Studies and Network Sense: Methods for Visualizing a Discipline. Titled “Common Strands: Multimodality, Literacy, and International Perspectives,” this podcast surveys Dr. Jennifer Rowsell’s engagement with New Literacy Studies as a graduate student, the rise of multimodality in the field of literacy studies, and the current landscape of UK and Canadian literacy research. Dr. Rowsell is professor in the Department of Teacher Education, Canada Research Chair in Multiliteracies at Brock University in St. Catherine’s Ontario. Dr. Rowsell is the 2016 recipient of the Writing & Literacies SIG’s Steve Witte Award for Lifetime Achievement. Named for Stephen P. Witte, leading scholar of writing theory and research and a founding editor of the journal Written Communication, the Steve Witte Award is presented to a senior scholar who has made significant contributions to research in the area of writing and literacies through a particular academic work or body of work that has contributed significantly to scholarship in the area of writing and literacies. Dr. Rowsell scholarship examining contemporary literacies across media, modes, and genres has contributed to expanding visions of what literacy education and pedagogy can be. Her work international contributions are many. Dr. Rowsell has authored, co-authored, and co-edited 18 books on an array of topics from new ways of framing literacy studies such asArtifactual Literacies: Every Object Tells A Story with Kate Pahl and Working with Multimodality: Literacy in Digital Age. She has pushed the field forward in volumes that address methodology in literacy research such as Resourcing Early Learners: New Networks, New Actors with Sue Nichols, Helen Nixon, and Sophia Rainbird and Learning and Literacy over Time: Longitudinal Perspectives with Julian Sefton-Green. She has also co-edited The Handbook of Literacy Studies with Kate Pahl which provides a renewed sense of the field of literacy studies and future directions in literacy research and theory. James Berlin     Welcome to MR. I’m Mary Hedengren, Jacob is in the Booth and we’re supported by the Humanities Media Project and UT Austin.   Was English in an identity crisis in the 80s and 90s? Maybe. But it’s certain that it thought it was. Interdisciplinary projects such as cultural studies and the voluntary expulsion of groups like English language and composition from English departments was inspiring a lot of ink in the PMLA and other journals and conferences between such illuminaries as Gerald Graff and Stanley Fish. And when people are anxious about who they are, they often look back to how they ended up here. How did English get so weird? What is the background behind composition’s complaints against literary studies? What led to everyone in the department being in a department together?   Enter Professor James Berlin. Berlin, a compositionist who had taught at U of Cinninati and Purdue. Berlin was a disciplinary historian who wrote two important books that tried to create a historical context for the current state of composition, which we’ll talk about today. Rhetoric and Reality: Writing Instruction in American Colleges. 1900-1985. Carbondale: Southern Illinois UP, 1987. Writing Instruction in Nineteenth-Century American Colleges. The earlier book, Writing Instruction in 19th-Century American Colleges published in 1984, traces the role of writing instruction in American political psyche. “no rhetoric—not Plato’s or Aris­totle’s or Quintilian’s or Perelman’s—is permanent.”     The next major book Berlin wrote picks up where Writing Instruction in Nineteenth-Century American Colleges. Left off—at the dawn of the 20th century. Rhetoric and Reality: Writing Instruction in American Colleges. 1900-1985 traces the history of composition in the United States up to what was then the modern day. In going through this history, though, Berlin weaves three strands of compositional theory: current-traditional, expressivist and social constructionist. Berlin makes no secret about which of these strands he thinks is right. Current traditionalists are grammar-obsessed ninnies who sneer at students while pushing their glasses up their noses while expressivists are berkinstocked hippies singing kumbaya without teaching anything significant. Berlin is unapologetic about his perspective. In the introduction, he mentions the criticism the book has received as having a political project. James Berlin, much like the honey badger, don’t care. He has a strong interest in the project to "vindicate the position of writing instruction in the college curriculum" (1) and he feels social constructionism is the best way to do so. He identifies several points that lead to writing instruction’s increased disciplinarity First there was the Birth of CCCC when a 1948 paper by George S. Wykoff and ensuing conflict leads to John Gerber of U of Iowa proposing a conference to discuss composition. 500 attend April 1-2 1949 (105). "With the establishment of the CCCC and its journal [...] teachers of freshman composition took a giant step toward qualifying for full membership in the English department, with the attendant privileges" (106)   Then there is the Importance of pamphlet The Basic Issues in the Teaching of English published as a supplement to College English in 1959. Identify key questions for English, especially in pedagogy (such as should writing "be taught as expression or as communication") (Berlin 124).   Finally there was Braddock's 1961   Research in Written Communication and subsequent founding of Research in the Teaching of English (1967) is important because "Only a discipline confident of its value and its future could allow this kind of harsh scrutiny" (135). Lit studies "have appropriated as their domain all uses of langauge except the narrowly refertial and logical. What remains [...] is given to rhetoric, to the writing course" (30).   In the early 20th century, universities were becoming dominated by sciences and practical arts. Objective philosophies ruled. Current-traditional is the most vehement and widely accepted of the objective rhetorics, but behaviorist, semanticist and linguistic rhetorics are also put into this category (9). As Berlin puts it: "The new university invested its graduates with the authority of science and through this authority gave them an economically comfortable position in a new, prosperous middle-class culture" (36)   On the other extreme of things was expressionist writing "the teacher cannot even instruct the student in the principles of writing, since writing is inextricably intertwined with the discovery of truth. The student can discover truth, but truth cannot be taught; the student can learn to write, but writing cannot be taught. The only strategy left, then is to provide an environment in which the individual can learn what cannot be taught" (13).   Berlin describes that, "For the proponents of liberal culture, the purpose of the English teacher was to cultivate the exceptional students, the geniuses, and, at the most, to tolerate all others" (72). For expressionists "writing--all writing--is art. This means that writing can be learned by not taught" (74). How many times do we hear that? That you just need to ponder a little, get a little older and then you’ll pick up what you need to? This is still kind of the philosophy in many Eastern Hemisphere universities where writing instruction hasn’t taken off as much. And it exists here, too, even in our own departments.   The method of expressionist teaching will be familiar to those in creative writing :"Most important was that the students read all papers aloud to the entire class and were given immediate responses [...] the teacher did not lecture but acted instead  as an ad-[83]ditional respondant" (84). Berlin’s last book Rhetorics, Poetics and Cultures was also a disciplinary project--reconciling composition (production) with literary studies (interpretation) by way of cultural studies--may seem a little dated to the 90s, which its heady enthrallment with cross-disciplinary cultural studies and post-modernity everywhere as specter and savior. He argues that English should reunite rhetoric and literary studies around text interpretation and production-not one or the other exclusively. He doesn’t just argue in theory but sets out his own class as an example of how to integrate textual production and analysis with general cultural studies. He emphatically defends the use of popular culture in the classroom and meeting students with the knowledge the already have. James Berlin died suddenly of a heart attack while he was still in the middle of career, but his influence is found all around the composition world. For example, the CCCC award for best dissertation is called the James Berlin award, and I think that’s fitting, considering how the establishment of a phd in composition has been such a benchmark in composition’s disciplinarity. Are we at a better place in terms of disciplinary security than we were in the 80s and 90s? I think so. I also think that part o the reason why is James Berlin’s impassioned disciplinary research and fervent argumentation.
