Show #746 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 12th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. BMW 7 SERIES ELECTRIC RUMORED TO HAVE AT LEAST 650 HORSEPOWER "When BMW announced the beefiest version of the next-generation 7er will have zero emissions, it didn’t disclose any details about the power delivered by its electric motors. Now, our pals at BMWBLOG claim to be in the know about the hottest version of the fullsize luxury sedan." says Motor1: "Rumored to be called Mi7 or i7 M60, the range-topping 7 Series is said to have at least two electric motors delivering a combined output of 650+ horsepower or about 50 hp more than the M760i. The report goes on to mention the flagship 7 Series will have a large battery pack with a capacity of over 100 kWh for a range between charges of up to 400 miles (644 kilometers). It won’t be the only M Performance version as below it will reportedly sit a plug-in hybrid model tentatively called M750e with a turbocharged straight-six 3.0-liter combined with an electric motor. The electric derivatives will have some stiff competition coming from existing models such as the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S as well as from the upcoming Audi E-Tron GT, Jaguar XJ, and the Mercedes EQS." https://www.motor1.com/news/408983/bmw-7-series-electric-power/ InsideEVs has more info on the pack sizes: “Regarding the i7, there will apparently be (at least) two variants. One will draw juice from an 80 kWh battery pack while another will have an even bigger 120 kWh pack; this should take it up to 600 km (385 miles) on a single charge, and there’s a good change it will only be offered in the long-wheelbase model in order to actually have enough room for the pack to fit.” https://insideevs.com/news/409390/bmw-i7-rendering-all-we-know/ HOT PLUG-IN HYBRID VOLKSWAGEN T-ROC GTE "The Volkswagen T-Roc range could potentially be bolstered by a high-performance GTE version in future, should the market produce sufficient demand" says Auto Express: "When asked during a press conference call if a performance plug-in hybrid for the T-Roc would be a good fit, VW’s Project Manager for Electrified Drivetrains, Dr Kai Philipp, said: “Our MQB technology gives us the possibility to do so.”Power would come from the petrol-electric powertrain that’s widely used across the Volkswagen Group. A 1.4-litre turbocharged engine is paired with an electric motor, which is capable of producing as much as 242bhp in the new 2020 Golf. However, the GTE would be more efficient than either: the 13kWh battery should enable an electric-only range of around 40 mile." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/hybrid-cars/352045/hot-plug-hybrid-volkswagen-t-roc-gte-cards CONSTRUCTION OF TESLA GIGAFACTORY 4 REPORTEDLY POSTPONED "After the super quick pace of work at the Tesla Gigafactory 4 (aka Giga Berlin) site in Grünheide, near Berlin in Germany, the activity now is almost frozen. Some were saying that Tesla is waiting for a permit, but the latest reports indicate that the company is revising its construction plan." says InsideEVs: "Tesla previously completed clearing the tree farm and ground leveling. The next stage would be the foundation, which seems to be postponed. Torque News reports: "We just got breaking news from Tesla Giga Berlin. Brandenburg’s public radio RBB 24 reports that Tesla has to postpone the construction of the foundation for its Gigafactory 4 in Grunheide, outside of Berlin." According to the State Environment Agency, Tesla wants to revise the approval documents on one more point: In response to criticism from local residents, the company had announced that the factory should use less water than originally planned." https://insideevs.com/news/408936/construction-gigafactory-4-postponed/ LORDSTOWN MOTORS SHOWS ENDURANCE ELECTRIC PICKUP'S IN-WHEEL MOTORS IN ACTION "Several automakers, from Ford to Tesla, are planning to launch electric pickup trucks, but startup company Lordstown Motors will have something that sets its Endurance pickup apart from the rest—in-wheel electric motors. A new video shows one of the in-wheel motors in action." says Motor Authority: "Mounting the motors inside the wheel hub frees up space, and offers the potential to more precisely control how much torque is sent to a wheel. Torque can be added or subtracted by adjusting the amount of current going to the motor, rather than using the clutch packs, differentials, or brake applications typically used to adjust torque split. Lordstown says the Endurance carries a base price of $52,500. It is accepting $1,000 refundable deposits for early build slots. In comparison, Tesla says its Cybertruck starts at $39,900. Lordstown has said it will start deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2020. Lordstown is also targeting commercial fleets, while the Cybertruck is aimed at individual retail buyers." As a result of increased supply, its lead time has been halved to 26 weeks. The longest wait is on Porsche’s first electric car, the Taycan (36 weeks), followed by the Seat Mii electric and Skoda Citigo e IV (26 weeks). But as I've got a long weekend off I'm leaving it at 80% . But in the past I've had the leaf plugged in at 100% for 3/4 days. Holidays when I've flown from the airport 30 miles away left it for two weeks at 60/70% . TBH I don't think it matters short term. Eg long weekend. But longer term week to two weeks plus I would say leave around 80% . Just my experience of 3yrs EV driving Ybe EV • 2 days ago Hi Martyn, Regarding your question of the week. I keep my Nissan Leaf connected up to my V2G charger. I have set it to charge to maximum of 95% and discharge to minimum of 25%. It tends to do one full cycle over a 24 hour period. I have been on the OVO V2G trial in the UK since July 2019 and have seen no significant battery degradation in that time. The current lockdown just means the car spends more time connected to the V2G charger and goes some small way to help smooth out the demand peaks. The best part is that I have had basically free electricity for my home and EV since the trial began :-) Chris Avram Car models may have special needs in layup. Chevy/Holden Volt Amperra will only maintain the 12 Volt battery if it is "rumning" or plugged in. Cant choose SOC so mine sits plugged in at 100% SOC = 85 % REAL. Also need to run it for 10 minutes on gas every month or so. Fabian Bonasera • 5 days ago We're keeping our 2013 Nissan LEAF at 80%. We're not sure if we should keep it plugged in all the time or not. We are still driving it 1 or 2 days a week for small trips, so we could charge just one night every week if that's better for the battery's health Victor Wood I parked up my Ioniq with about 75% charge as that’s what it was at when I last parked it. Once every couple of weeks I will go to the (remotely located garage) and change it’s parked position and leave the car on for 15 minutes to recharge the 12v battery. Tbh the 12v battery worries me more than the HV battery. Kenz300 x • 6 days ago If the car is parked for a long time leave it at 50-60% no more. Bill B Our Audi E Tron is setting @ 79 miles in the garage, here in FL USA. Probably not going anywhere for a while. Getting groceries delivered. PETER GLASS The BMW i3 manual is pretty clear. If you are leaving the car for over 3months then it should be plugged in. It has so little vampire drain that as long as it’s on reasonably high charge frankly there’s nothing really to worry about. There is no facility to set a charging limit, e.g. 80%, like a Tesla or Kona so you’d have to unplug manually at the right time if you wanted to leave it short of 100%. One important thing is, the i3 battery management has ‘passive cell balancing’ which is best done at 100% [it does happen at high charge but what level is unclear] so having the car idle is an opportunity to leave it balancing and getting a deep sleep. [The manual is equally clear about not leaving the car on low charge. What is low? Well, it won’t let you turn on the heaters while sitting waiting at a rapid charger if it’s under 12%, so clearly the BMS is unhappy there. I drove back from Poole in 2017 with only 6 or 7% left and didn’t charge it back up for over a day – I’m sure the car emailed me it was unhappy, but I can’t remember for sure…!!]. I think most EVs need to be concerned about is their 12Volt batteries and it’s worth waking up the car, switching it on for say 20mins letting the DC to DC converter do it’s work [especially if they are a few years old]. I expect the i3 manual on the 3month lay up is thinking about this issue. RAJEEV NARAYAN I’m a physician so I’m driving 80 miles a day or more! In the past however when I have left the EV for a week or so, I left the battery at about 50% under the assumption that the battery dislikes extreme states of charge or discharge. QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV industry help people get driving electric as soon as this is all over? Show #526 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 12th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Three new producers of the podcast! MIKHAIL GROZOVSK, GLEN SUTTON and GUDJON HUGBERG BJORNSSON FORD USE VW'S ELECTRIC CAR PLATFORM Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG today announced they are expanding their global alliance to include electric vehicles – and will collaborate with Argo AI to in-troduce autonomous vehicle technology in the U.S. and Europe Ford will become the first additional automaker to use Volkswagen’s dedicated electric vehicle architecture and Modular Electric Toolkit – or MEB – to deliver a high-volume zero-emission vehicle in Europe starting in 2023. Ford expects to deliver more than 600,000 European vehicles using the MEB architecture over six years, with a second all-new Ford model for European customers under discussion. This supports Ford’s European strategy, which involves continuing to play on its strengths – including commercial vehicles, compelling crossovers and imported iconic vehicles such as Mustang and Explorer. Volkswagen started developing its MEB architecture in 2016, investing approximately $7 billion in this platform. The car-maker is planning to use this platform to build approximately 15 million cars for the Volkswagen Group alone in the next decade. For Ford, using Volkswagen’s MEB architecture is part of its more than $11.5 billion investment in electric vehicles worldwide – and supports Ford’s commitment to offer its European customers a broad range of electric vehicles while meeting its sustainability commitments. TESLA’S (TSLA) Q2 2019 EARNINGS CALL WITH ELON MUSK SET FOR JULY 24 "Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has announced that it would be posting its financial results for Q2 2019 after the market closes on Wednesday, July 24, 2019." reports Simon for TEslarati: "The company would be issuing a brief advisory with a link to its Q2 2019 Update Letter, which will be accessible from Tesla’s Investor Relations website. A live Q&A session is set for 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time (5:30 p.m. Eastern Time) to discuss the electric car and energy company’s financial results and outlook." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-momentum-q1-earnings-call-date-rivals-hit-roadblocks/ TESLA SUPPLIER HINTS AT DOUBLING PARTS PRODUCTION FOR MODEL 3 "precision stamping service provider China FineBlanking Technology (CFTC) - one of Tesla's suppliers from China, will reportedly double its monthly shipments for components of relays used in the Tesla Model 3 from 20,000 to 40,000 as early as August 2019." says InsideEVs: "Assuming that Tesla is able to produce on average around 5,500 Model 3 per week (up to around 7,000 peak) in California and is gearing up for 3,000 per week in China (starting with low-volume in Q4), the Tesla Factory in California would need to increase production significantly maybe to around 7,000+ per week and 90,000+ per quarter (more at peaks)." https://insideevs.com/news/359426/tesla-supplier-doubling-parts-production-model-3/ TESLA MODEL S BEATS CHEVY, TOYOTA, AND CADILLAC FOR ULTIMATE CAR OF THE YEAR HONORS MotorTrend have crowned their ultimate car of the year. "The selection and judging criteria have changed, the trophies have changed, and the vehicles most certainly have changed, but the spirit behind the Car of the Year is the same today as it was in 1949: Identify the most superlative new vehicle introduced each year." they say: "We are confident that, were we to summon all the judges and staff of the past 70 years, we would come to a rapid consensus: No vehicle we've awarded, be it Car of the Year, Import Car of the Year, SUV of the Year, or Truck of the Year, can equal the impact, performance, and engineering excellence that is our Ultimate Car of the Year winner, the 2013 Tesla Model S." "The mere fact the Tesla Model S exists at all is a testament to innovation and entrepreneurship, the very qualities that once made the American automobile industry the largest, richest, and most powerful in the world," we wrote. "That the 11 judges unanimously voted the first vehicle designed from the wheels up by a fledgling automaker the 2013 MotorTrend Car of the Year should be cause for celebration. America can still make things." And still, the better part of a decade later, there isn't an electric car that can travel as far as a Model S, nor is there a street-legal production car of any motivation that can beat a Ludicrous Model S to 60 mph, not even a Ferrari LaFerrari or Porsche 918. Meanwhile, Tesla remains among the front-runners of advanced driver assistance technology; Autopilot and Autosteer were both unveiled on the Model S." https://www.motortrend.com/news/2013-tesla-model-s-beats-chevy-toyota-cadillac-ultimate-car-of-the-year/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA TO PROVIDE HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE OWNERS WITH NATIONWIDE CHARGING Electrify America today announced an agreement with Harley-Davidson to provide owners of its first all-electric motorcycle, The Harley-Davidson LiveWire with the per minute equivalent of 500 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging over two years at Electrify America stations nationwide. LiveWire motorcycle customers who purchase models manufactured between August 2019 and July 2021 can enroll and manage their charging plan through the newly launched Electrify America mobile app, available for both Android and iPhone. Harley-Davidson customers will be able to take advantage of Electrify America’s network of ultra-fast EV chargers across highway and metro charging stations planned in 42 states and the District of Columbia. BMW IX3 ELECTRIC SUV RUMORED TO BE REAR-WHEEL DRIVE IN U.S. "BMW hasn't been too secretive about the arrival of its newest artillery of electric vehicles. In fact, the Bavarian automaker has sent official spy photos of the iX3 – a concept that was introduced in 2018 but now confirmed for production next year – together with two other EVs i4 and iNext." reports Motor1.com: "BMWBlog got a bit more information about the all-new electric crossover. According to its source, the iX3 is based on the G08 platform, which underpins the long-wheelbase X3. Even better, the iX3 will allegedly have a rear-wheel-drive configuration in the United States. BMWBlog also got the supposed moniker of the iX3 – sDrive75, with "75" representing the 75 kWh capacity of its battery pack. Production of the iX3 will be in China and will be exported globally from there, including the U.S." https://www.motor1.com/news/359613/bmw-ix3-rear-wheel-drive-us/ SECOND-GENERATION NISSAN LEAF LANDS IN AUSTRALIA "The new Nissan LEAF (the 40 kWh version) finally makes its way to Australia, where it will be sold from August 1, 2019 at 89 dealers" says InsideEVs: "To streamline the EV sales, Nissan decided to offer only a single high-spec grade, available from $49,990 AUD ($34,950) plus on-road costs. Stephen Lester, Nissan Australia managing director said that the company is expecting to see a spike in EV sales in Australia." https://insideevs.com/news/359462/second-generation-nissan-leaf-lands-australia/ LG CHEM CONSIDERING BUILDING SECOND U.S. EV BATTERY PLANT "LG Chem is considering building a second U.S. factory, three people familiar with the matter said, accelerating a race to add capacity to meet growing global demand for green vehicles." according to NDTV.com: "LG Chem, one of the leading EV battery makers in the world that counts General Motors and Volkswagen among its customers, is weighing investing about 2 trillion won ($1.70 billion) in the plant that could begin production in 2022, one of the people said. Kentucky and Tennessee are among the candidates for the plant's site, the person said. A decision on the plant's site is expected to be made by the end of this month." https://auto.ndtv.com/news/lg-chem-considering-building-second-u-s-ev-battery-plant-2068950 ELECTRIC CARS ARE DIFFICULT TO LIVE WITH ACCORDING TO JAGUAR BOSS Rawdon Glover, UK managing director for Jaguar: “I’d like to see a faster roll-out of infrastructure in terms of scale, of course, especially in light of the government’s stated Road to Zero ambitions, but I also think there need to be steps to make what we have today more usable. I’m not finger-pointing: it’s clear that we have a role to play in that, as well as the Government and the incumbent suppliers. But we have to make it easier to live with electric cars, from ensuring geographical coverage to raising standards so that charge points always work to introducing a system where you can have one card – ideally your credit card – to pay wherever you are. Having so many providers, each with their own payment systems that you need to sign up to in their own unique way, presents an unnecessary hurdle. There needs to be leadership from the Government that we can all get behind.” https://insideevs.com/news/359330/jaguar-director-ev-still-not-easy/ Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. The massive vessel is estimated to be carrying around 3,000 Model 3, which are expected to start an electric disruption in Europe’s passenger car market. At the same time, the arrival of the highly-anticipated sedan also means that deliveries to reservation holders in the region are about to begin. Soon, social media posts from the Tesla community revealed that the first Model 3 deliveries in Europe were already underway. That said, it did not take long before Tesla became unable to deliver as many vehicles as they estimated." On Wednesday, Elon Musk took to Twitter to apologize for the delivery delay in Europe." elonmusk: "Sorry, many unexpected challenges with cars coming through Zeebrugge first time. Cars will start moving out in volume tomorrow." Look, it's a three year wait, another day is fine. People just like to have a moan online because they got bumped by a day. Also this was a self-made problem. Tesla brought forward the delivery dates, some by quite a way, and then had to delay by a day causing disappointment. In on a way Tesla could and we love them for it. Meanwhile Kyle Field at CleanTechnica was one of the first to pick up on a Tweet from the first owner to get his car: "The first European customer has taken delivery of his Tesla Model 3 today after what felt like an endless stream of delays since it was first announced nearly 3 years ago. Fred is from Oldenzaal in the Netherlands and has been a long-time supporter of Tesla, even going so far as to travel to the Tesla “mothership” at its automotive factory in Fremont, California, to lobby for the Netherlands. Opening up its higher end configurations of the Tesla Model 3 to European and Chinese customers allows the company to continue building higher margin vehicles as it puts the finishing touches on the Standard Range vehicle." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-logistical-challenges-europe-deliveries/ https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/07/the-first-european-customer-takes-delivery-of-a-tesla-model-3/ GM ELECTRIC VEHICLES COULD BE PROFITABLE EARLY NEXT DECADE, SAYS CEO "Incentives, credits, and compliance schemes can only get the electric vehicle market so far. The real test of its success will be when large, established automakers can get to a point when they can call them profitable." says Green Car Reprts: "On Wednesday, on a call with analysts to discuss the company’s fourth-quarter 2018 financial results, GM CEO Mary Barra said that’s a distinction could come in the early 2020s.Barra reiterated yesterday that GM believes in an all-EV future, and noted that the company is being repositioned “from one that was trying to be all things to all people in all markets to a very strategic, agile, and profitable company.”" https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121379_gm-electric-vehicles-could-be-profitable-early-next-decade-says-ceo ARCIMOTO STARTS TAKING ORDERS FOR ITS THREE-WHEELED EV "Arcimoto has started taking orders for its three-wheeled electric vehicle. The Fun Utility Vehicle (FUV) Evergreen Edition will set you back $19,900 before tax credits and rebates, which is a far cry from Arcimoto's target of $11,900, though it aims to push down the price over time." reports Engadget: "Arcimoto plans to deliver 100 Evergreens by the end of June in Oregon, California and Washington. It will later expand delivery to other states, and hopes to fulfill all US pre-orders (more than 3,000 of them) by the end of June next year. It's requiring a non-refundable $5,000 deposit from anyone who orders one now. The Evergreen offers a 75 mph top speed and a range of 100 miles of city driving on a single charge" https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/07/arcimoto-fuv-evergreen-edition-orders-open/ KIA NIRO EV ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SELLS OUT IN UK: NEW DELIVERIES DELAYED "The number of e-Niro allocated to particular markets is limited while deliveries could be significantly delayed, according to the latest news In the UK, for example, the initial batch of 900 e-Niro was ordered within several weeks and customers probably will need to wait until the end of the year to order some from another batch (probably for delivery in 2020)." accrding to Mark Kane for InsideEVs. AutoExpress said: "“Deliveries for the new Kia e-Niro were supposed to commence in April. However, as a result of the e-Niro’s popularity and the production bottleneck, buyers who managed to snag one of the initial 900-model run may have to wait until the end of 2019 before taking delivery. John Hargreaves, Kia’s head of fleet and remarketing, said the battery pack supply chain issue is likely to remain “a restraining factor for at least another 12 to 18 months.”" https://insideevs.com/kia-niro-ev-e-niro-sold-out-uk/ KIA STUDY REVEALS FLEETS READY FOR EV TIPPING POINT Meanwhile, and you really couldn't make this up: "Demand for electric vehicles is reaching a tipping point for fleets, according to a new study by Kia. Furthermore, it seems as if public perspectives are also having a huge impact on fleet decisions, with 71 per cent of respondents saying that their organisation is nervous about purchasing a petrol or diesel car that isn’t EV/PHEV up five percent from the previous report." https://fleetworld.co.uk/kia-study-reveals-fleets-ready-for-ev-tipping-point/ DRIVENOW TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR SHARING FLEET "Car sharing firm Drivenow has announced that 130 new BMW i3 electric vehicles (EVs) will be joining its London fleet. The company, owned by BMW Group, says the new i3s will join 50 older examples of the model until the latter are phased out in April." according to Business Car: "Drivenow says its aim is to have a fleet that is 80% electric by 2025. The new i3s - which offer a 160-mile driving range between charges - will take the company's total current fleet to 720 vehicles, operating in nine London boroughs: Barnet, Brent, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Westminster. The lack of camouflage suggests that the market launch is close. It’s a smart move for the German manufacturer, as BMW 530e iPerformance is already the best-selling plug-in hybrid model for the brand." https://insideevs.com/bmw-530e-touring-phev-spied/ BMW I7 ELECTRIC WITH RANGE OF NEARLY 400 MILES IN THE WORKS And also: "One of the new all-electric models in BMW‘s pipeline is the BMW i7. That’s according to BMWBlog’s sources in Munich. There is no official announcement about the i7. However, at least the trademarks from i1 up to i9 were registered in 2012 and then renewed in 2018. It’s expected that the i7 could be an all-electric version of the next generation 7-Series. Furthermore, it’s believed that it will get an electric range of up to 600 km (373 miles)." It’s Friday 8th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ELECTRIC CAR SWITCH The plans I've talked about on previous podcasts, to switch World Rallycross Championship cars to being electric, has been approved by the governing body the FIA World Motor Sport Council. I first heard of plans for this last year, and then earlier this year invitations were sent out for companies who wish you tender for the supply of the battery and chassis. This is very significant news as it starts from 2020. World Rallycross is a fast-paced, high adrenaline sport for drivers and spectators alike, with the electric cars eligible for both manufacturer teams and privateers. Every constructor will have the same battery and chassis package, which will be open for privateer teams to homologate as well. We now know Williams will provide all the batteries, as they have done to Formula E up to now, with Formula E moving to McLaren for the 2018/19 season. IN fact some of those specs from Formula Ewill be used to derive the regulations which will govern the manufacturers and private teams on the powertrains they design. The stats: two motors, one on each axle, and total power of 500kW. https://www.autosport.com/wrx/news/136578/world-rx-2020-electric-car-move-approved KIA NIRO EV REVEALED TO PUBLIC KIA has revealed its all-new Niro EV at the 2018 Busan International Motor Show today in Korea. They are finally showing off to the public what you and I have talked about for a while since we saw the concept at CES plus official pics last month. As Hyundai have done with the Kona they've taken the combustion car and added some batteries. The charge point is in the front grille behind a flappy slidey cover, and the small LED headlights are something we're seeing more from EV designers. Of course no need for air intakes to keep an engine cool makes the front look way better. As we've mentioned the Kona, in the same way the Niro offers a 64kWh lithium-polymer battery for 279 miles of range. However even though they're sister companies, it's not the same battery as it would be fair to assume. In fact more than one EV blog I've read today said they're fitting the same packs - oopsie! Different suppliers and different chemistry. That's not EPA rated yet though so expect something around 240 miles, still better than base spec Model 3. The motor drives the front wheels with 150kW of power and a brisk, without being face-melting, 0-60mph time of 7.8 seconds. That's the same for both battery options. And charging speeds? Yes they're confirmed for 100kW. The smaller pack is 39.2kWh for 186 miles of range. And if you're like me, I always find myself thinking I need the long range, but when you look at the journeys we make, 186 miles is just fine in nearly all cases. Even if that range came down to real world 100 miles you know the price of a Kia will be super competitive. Inside we have some blue accents for snazziness, look out for a 7inch touchscreen with plenty of buttons, this is no Tesla minimalism. There's an included wireless phone charger, plus plenty of safety tech like Forward Collision Warning with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Intelligent Stop & Go, and Lane Following Assist. As for their version of Autopilot, it's Level 2, so you'll stay in lane on the freeway with accelerating, decelerating, braking and steering up to 80mph. Korean sales start soon with prices elsewhere announced later this year - that's as specific as they'll be. With 5,000 domestic orders in Korea I would expect them to either service all of them first, or a at split it 50:50 for Korea vs Rest Of The World. GM TO SELL HONDA ADVANCED ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES IN NORTH AMERICA Reuters just reported: "General Motors Co will supply advanced batteries to Japan’s Honda Motor Co, the companies said Thursday, a move that could significantly reduce the cost of future electric vehicles at both automakers after 2020. GM and Honda on Thursday said they would “collaborate” on the batteries, with GM supplying cells and modules, mainly for electric vehicles to be sold by both companies in North America. A source familiar with GM’s plans said its current battery cell supplier, Korea’s LG Chem, is expected to provide cells for the new battery, which is mainly a GM design. The new batteries are expected to begin production around 2021, the source said." This looks like the classic win-win. The next gen batteries will be higher energy density than those used in the Bolt and for instance. DRIVER IN FATAL TESLA AUTOPILOT CRASH DID NOT HAVE HANDS ON WHEEL This is such a horrible story to report on but I want to quickly update you. "The driver of a Tesla who fatally crashed in California in March did not have his hands on the steering wheel at the time of the accident, said a preliminary report from the National Traffic Safety Board on Thursday." according to CNBC. NEW NISSAN eNV200 CAMPERVAN Nissan's hidden gem is the eNV200, electric van and people carrier which has recently been updated with the 40kWh battery, and thermal management to handle those who use it as a van and rapid charge regularly for business. "Nissan has taken the covers off a new in-house campervan range at the 2018 Madrid Motor Show. The campers, which are currently exclusively for the Spanish market, with an all-electric e-NV200 version included in the line-up." say AutoExpress: "All the campervans offer an extendable roof, which the maker claims allows four people to sit and stand in comfort. They all also come with a double bed, however, the NV300 is the only van to offer sleeping for four, thanks to a second double bed which is made available once the roof is raised. Inside this larger NV300-based model, there’s a fridge, sink, hob and heater to make sure occupants don’t freeze during their fine dining experience." The campervan eNV200 will be popular for those wanting to cut their emissions whilst enjoying the classic campervan roadtrip experience. DAIMLER TRUCKS NORTH AMERICA UNVEILS TWO ELECTRIC MODELS Daimler press office have been in touch with news that: "Freightliner Trucks premiered two fully electrified commercial vehicles, a Freightliner eCascadia™ heavy-duty truck and a Freightliner eM2 106 medium-duty truck today, during the Daimler Trucks Capital Market and Technology Day here. Freightliner plans to deliver an Electric Innovation Fleet of 30 vehicles to customers later this year for further testing under real-world operating conditions." "The eCascadia has up to 730 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 550 Kwh usable capacity, a range of up to 250 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 200 miles) in about 90 minutes. The Class 8 tractor is designed for local and regional distribution and drayage. The eM2 has up to 480 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 325 Kwh of usable capacity, a range of up to 230 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 184 miles) in about 60 minutes. The eM2 is Freightliner's electrified solution for local distribution, pickup and delivery, food and beverage delivery, and last-mile logistics applications." What did Daimler Trucks chief Martin Daum say? “We are the undisputed global leader of the trucking industry and we intend to remain in that position with electric trucks and buses." Just a reminder on the Tesla Semi range - 500 miles. Which Elon said yesterday was already being improved on for the truck which goes on sale in 2020. PORSCHE MISSION E CROSS TURISMO As well as the Porsche Mission E, the recently unveiled Cross Turismo version is a more rugged version of the same car. Designed to fit your skis in, in you will. And some of the early test mules have been given to journalists in North America. BMWBlog praised the steering and handling, but also said: "It’s also really, really fast. They weren’t allowed to drive it past 50 mph but Porsche claims it has 600 hp from its dual electric motors and is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and 0-124 mph in 12 seconds. The latter performance figure is actually faster than the Tesla Model S P100D. The biggest trick up the Mission E’s sleeves, though, is the fact that it can charge faster than any other electric car before it. With the capability of 800-volt charging, the Porsche Mission E can 250 miles of range in 15 minutes." More of those chargers will be appearing very soon especially in Europe where several networks are at advanced stage of installing them. EV CHARGING MAP ALLOWS ROUND AUSTRALIA EV TRIPS "It’s now possible to drive around Australia in an electric car, thanks to a comprehensive EV charging station map. The Tesla Owners Club of Australia (TOCA) released its Round Australia Electric Highway map this month." according to EnergyMatters.com.au "However, the map is not complete. There are still gaps in fast-charging stations and places where three phase is not available. As a result, TOCA and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) are offering help to property owners. TOCA and AEVA will give a 32 amp 3 phase electrical outlet free to any site which will help build the Round Australia and Red Centre routes to distance intervals of 300 km max. The property owner must install it reasonably promptly at an accessible location, and agree to let electric vehicles charge there."
