David Welch, Detroit Bureau Chief, Bloomberg joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss how Waymo won the robotaxi race as Detroit walked away two times. There are major shifts happening in the autonomous vehicle industry as Waymo scales up operations and Tesla prepares to introduce the Cybercab. At CES last week, Jensen Huang, Co-founder & CEO of NVIDIA highlighted autonomous vehicles multi-trillion dollar potential. As Waymo and Tesla have accelerated, traditional automakers have largely abandoned their in-house autonomous vehicle development programs. Ford shutdown Argo AI and GM shutdown Cruise, potentially opening the door for companies such as Wayve and Nuro that are pursuing a licensing model. Then there is May Mobility which is emerging as an interesting player in the autonomous vehicle industry, with strong relationships Toyota and NTT, along a planned expansion with Lyft in Atlanta. By the end of 2025, the robotaxi market could look completely different.Recorded on Tuesday, January 7, 2025Episode Chapters0:00 2025 Autonomy Market Outlook2:53 Did GM Pull the Plug on Cruise Too Soon?9:23 Zoox IPO?10:52 Could Amazon Integrate Zoox into Prime?12:03 Waymo 2025 Outlook14:21 Does Uber Need a Fragmented Market to Win in Robotaxis?15:27 Rename Robotaxis, America Taxis17:30 Waymo in NYC?20:40 Will a National Autonomous Vehicle Framework Spur Investments?23:31 May Mobility28:55 Tesla Robotaxi33:30 Vision Only35:24 AI37:12 Detroit's Autonomy Strategy--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and commentary on autonomous vehicles/trucks and the emerging autonomy economy™.Sign up for This Week in The Autonomy Economy newsletter: https://www.roadtoautonomy.com/autonomy-economy/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Guest: Mark Fields, former president & CEO of Ford Motor Company and chairperson at PlanviewIn 2005, Mark Fields was asked to run the Americas for the Ford Motor Company, a role he would serve in for 7 years, later becoming COO and then CEO. His wife and kids were used to relocating for Mark's job, but had just put down roots in Florida. He told them that this time, they should stay put — he would commute between Florida and Detroit every week, and call home for an hour every night. “I probably communicated more with [my wife] because we were apart, than if I was there,” Mark says. “Because if I was there, I'd come home for dinner, we'd spend a little bit of time together, I'd grunt at her, and then I'd go back to my emails, and ignore the kids. Whereas, by being away, I actually had really focused time every day to talk.”Chapters:(01:01) - The auto business in ‘89 (05:27) - The business now (08:47) - Ford vs. Trump (11:44) - Becoming a leader (17:35) - The next chapter (20:01) - Relocating the family (24:45) - Bring the kids to work (29:19) - “You have one life” (33:52) - Ego and purpose (42:06) - Retirement adrenaline (45:10) - Leading with passion (48:06) - Avoiding bankruptcy (52:55) - Grading Mark's CEO years (55:12) - The board (58:32) - Electric vehicles (01:04:50) - 24 Hours of Le Mans (01:11:36) - Selling a $580,000 car Mentioned in this episode: Harvard Business School, Ronald Reagan, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, CNBC, Volkswagen, American Icon, Donald Trump, Rutgers University, Mazda, Hertz, the Range Rover, Michigan University and Michigan Stadium, Mamoon Hamid, work/life balance, Mark McLaughlin and Palo Alto Networks, the Great Recession, GM, Chrysler, the North American International Auto Show, Bill Ford, Argo AI, Chariot, autonomous vehicles, Ford v Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari, the Ford GT, Jaguar Racing, and De Beers.Links:Connect with MarkLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Alex Roy is a well-known thought leader and expert in the mobility space. He joins to explore what's real in the autonomy space, the importance of effective strategy and discernment, the challenges of effectively communicating and marketing new technologies, and more. Links: Show notes: http://brandonbartneck.com/futureofmobility/alexroy Edison Manufacturing Exchange: https://brandonbartneck.substack.com/publish/home https://www.johnson-roy.com/ https://x.com/AlexRoy144 Takeaways To determine the maturity of autonomous vehicle technology, it is important to go and see for oneself how the technology performs in real-world conditions. Strategic thinking and discernment are crucial in separating the good ideas from the bad ones and focusing on what truly matters in a given scenario. Building a good product that meets customer needs and creates trust is essential for success in the mobility industry. Navigating regulatory environments and cultural attitudes towards automation can present significant challenges for companies in the mobility space. Understanding culture is essential for success in the autonomous vehicle industry. Simulation should consider the political environment of the markets where deployment is planned. Identify potential risks that could kill the business and proactively prevent them. The quality of people and their ability to work together is crucial for success. The future of autonomous vehicles depends on market forces, capital markets, and regulatory regimes. Alex Roy Bio: Former self-driving technology executive, automotive journalist and race driver, Alex Roy is best known for leading the first team in 23 years to break the Cannonball Run driving record, crossing the USA in 31 hours and 4 minutes. He has also broken the EV record 3 times, and still holds the Tesla Autopilot and 3-wheeled ICE records, the latter in a Morgan 3-Wheeler. Alex is also co-founder of the Autonocast and The Drive, founder of the Human Driving Association, author of The Driver, producer of APEX: The Secret Race Across America, and Chairman Emeritus of The Moth storytelling series. As Director of Special Operations at Argo.AI, Roy pioneered concepts like Universal Basic Mobility and Roy's Razor—the litmus test for autonomous systems. Roy has written for Bloomberg, Road & Track, and Jalopnik, has appeared on CNN, NBC, Fox News, Cheddar, and TF1, and has spoken at the FBI, SXSW, TedX, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and Carnegie Mellon. Johnson and Roy: Joel Johnson and Alex Roy met in 2005 in Lower Manhattan as Alex prepared to break the Cannonball Run driving record. From a love of speed, science fiction, Sondheim and Opeth, they collaborated across digital media, establishing and expanding technology and mobility brands such as WIRED, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, The Drive, Wirecutter, Autonocast, and more. Passion for technology and mobility brought them from media and manufacturing to robotics, self-driving and AI, first individually with clients such as General Motors and Argo AI; then together in shared practice, based on the belief that the only way to predict the future is to drive towards it. Future of Mobility: The Future of Mobility podcast is focused on the development and implementation of safe, sustainable, effective, and accessible mobility solutions, with a spotlight on the people and technology advancing these fields. Five years ago, venture investors, tech companies and automakers were pouring tens of billions of dollars into driverless cars. Tesla, General Motors, Lyft, Uber, and Google's Waymo were promising large fleets of robotaxis with fully autonomous vehicles by the turn of the decade.  In 2017, Ford took a big swing. The company invested $1 billion in Argo AI, a startup developing level-four driverless systems. Later, VW entered the partnership. The automakers promised to make a fully autonomous car by 2021.  But in October of last year, VW pulled out of the partnership. Ford said it would shut down the driverless car program, taking a $2.7 billion loss.  So how did we get to a point where a promising startup valued at $7 billion is being written off by automakers? And what does it say about the viability of fully-autonomous cars? Journalist Ed Neidermeyer says Ford's shutdown of Argo AI was due to inflated expectations – which exposed a mismatch in business models. “I think it's very easy to look at this and say, ‘shutting down Argo AI was an admission that this technology doesn't work…or was a scam. And you look out on social media and people are taking that lesson away – and I think that's the wrong lesson.” This week, we speak with Ed about the real lessons behind the setbacks for autonomous cars: the mismatch between our fantasies and the reality of the technology. FOLLOW UP: BRITISHVOLT IN RISK OF RECEIVERSHIPThings are moving quickly at Britishvolt. A week or so ago we were talking about them seeking funding, as of Monday's news, they could well have been in receivership by the time you listen to this episode. They had sought to draw some of their funding from the Government early but have been rebuffed as they decide not to risk more public money. However, it appears they do have some short and medium term funding secured, but we don't know from where. EU BANS NEW ICE CARS FROM 2035The 27 countries of the EU have agreed to ban all new internal combustion engined cars, powered by fossil fuels, from 2035. There is also an increase in the reduction of CO2 emissions from 2030, up to 55% reduction on 2021 engines, where previously it was 37.5%. There are some exemptions though, for smaller production numbers. Those registering between 1,000 and 10,000 will be exempt until the end of 2035, whilst those registering less than 1,000 cars do not need to comply. Live—from the campus of Hillsdale College in beautiful Hillsdale Michigan— this is Scot Bertram in for Steve on the Steve Gruber Show for –Friday, October 28th 2022—   —Here are 3 big things you need to know—   One — After being Twitter's new owner for an hour, Elon Musk is already firing several top executives.  The billionaire has previously said he plans to cut around 75-percent of the company's staff after he takes ownership.  The same night he acquired the company, Musk fired the CEO and CFO, along with other top executives.   Two—   The closing of a self-driving vehicle technology company led to a large third quarter loss at Ford Motor Company. The automaker lost 827-million dollars and noted that Argo AI, which was trying develop fully autonomous vehicles, will be shut down. Ford invested one-billion dollars in the company back in 2017 and said they would have self-driving cars on the road by 2021.   And number three— Mortgage rates are increasing yet again.  Freddie Mac says the 30-year rate went up to seven-point-zero-eight percent this week.   It comes as the Federal Reserve has been hiking interest rates in a bid to fight soaring inflation this year.

Today I'm joined by Argo AI, a forward-thinking transport technology business who are on a mission to make the world's streets and roadways safe, accessible and useful for all, through the power of self-driving technology. With a team of self-driven engineers, strategists, product managers, and more – from over 50 countries – Argo are utilizing self-driving products and services to transform the movement of people and goods, benefiting communities around the world, and empowering both people and businesses to be more successful. Today Lehren MacKay, Head of Business Development at Argo AI, joins me to chat all about the company: what they do; the landscape of autonomous technology; embracing a culture of safety; and why self-driving technology has profound potential to transform the way we live and move.   IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:   [06.23] The current landscape when it comes to autonomous vehicles, and why it's a growing focus for many businesses. “It's really exciting times – we are seeing a lot of investment in the autonomous vehicles space and a focus on a lot of diverse applications of the technology, ranging from delivery to ride share to trucking.” [08.29] An overview of Argo – what they do, and how they help their customers. “We have had a really collaborative process with our customers, creating relationships that drive mutual benefits and ultimately thinking about how we can future proof their businesses.” [11.59] Mapping, sensing, planning and acting – the four key steps in how Argo's autonomous technology works. [14.18] The relationship between AI and people, and why it's important to harness the power that comes from both working seamlessly together. "We often think about ‘how are we designing products, with people and customers in mind?' And so for us, our key purpose is ‘how do we think about reimagining the human journey?' [16.26] A closer look at Argo's Autonomous Delivery service, and the value it's bringing to both the middle and last mile for customers. “We're seeing a re-emergence of the urban middle mile… and as part of this change, we're seeing new delivery middle mile use cases.” [19.04] From tackling efficiency issues to addressing sustainability goals, the positive impact autonomous vehicles can have on the industry. “There are a lot of driver shortages impacting delivery schedules, and we think autonomous vehicles can actually become that reliable driver supply to meet increasing volume and demands.” [21.53] Why safety is a core value at Argo, and why autonomous vehicles have the potential to revolutionize the safety of our roads. “We are ultimately designing a driver that never gets tired, never gets distracted – and never drinks too much!” [25.07] Argo's ethos of benefiting communities, and empowering both people and businesses. [27.11] The ideal client for Argo. [29.09] A case study, showing how Argo supported a key client with store-to-store rebalancing, in order to help them meet changing customer demands. [32.56] The future for Argo, and for autonomous vehicles.   RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED:   Head over to Argo AI's website now to find out more and discover how they could help you too. Reilly Brennan, General Partner, Trucks VC joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss investing in the future. The conversation begins with Reilly and Grayson discussing what is going to happen when consolidation begins in the autonomous vehicle industry. This is a period of consolidation because you have essentially a lot of the robo-taxi ideas turned into commercial applications, probably around logistics and parcels. – Reilly BrennanThen there are the startups such as Bear Flag Robotics (acquired by John Deere – August 2021) and Gatik that have been focused on specific applications since day one. Shifting the conversation to industrial use cases, Grayson asks Reilly what his thoughts are on the industrial market as it relates to autonomy. One of those specific industrial markets is mining. With global mining companies hitting record profits and Rio Tinto recently announcing a $7.7 billion half-year dividend, Grayson asks Reilly if a global mining company could potentially acquire an autonomy startup. No doubt. Electrification and AV to those specific players is as much on their mind as the way you would think about DHL, UPS, Amazon, etc adding autonomy and electrification to theirs. It's just a component of how they make money or will make more money in the future. – Reilly BrennanThere is a growing segment of the startup market has is beginning to focus on the opportunities in the industrial market. One aspect of the startup industrial market that is booming is the autonomous trucking industry. The autonomous trucking industry is generating revenue and shoring up the supply chain through automation, as consumers battle ever-increasing inflation. Reilly rightly points out that this industry is heavily dependent on partnerships to scale and return capital to shareholders and investors. One of the key partnerships in the future will be railroads. Grayson makes a prediction that in the next 18 to 24 months, a railroad will buy an autonomous trucking company.Another segment of the industrial market is maritime. Looking at investment opportunities in the space, Reilly is currently studying hydrography and shipping routes. There is an emerging opportunity to map waterways which will increase shipping efficiencies. The depths within ports can change so much that it impacts how much payload you can take. – Reilly BrennanAs maritime shipping routes get optimized, it's time to allow autonomous trucks to enter and operate at ports. The partnership dynamics of autonomous trucking is arguably one of the most important parts of the business. In fact, we have seen some of the logistics companies take investments from entities that own or have access to those ports for that specific reason. It's a fundamental question that there is not any one company, even Waymo that can lay claim to a leadership position for those specific pickup points. That is a big opportunity and in fact, it's probably more important than saying you are running 10,000 trips a day on this route in Texas. If someone came to us and said if I secured the access to these specific vital ports in the United States, I think that is actually saying something a great deal.– Reilly BrennanStaying on the topic of Waymo, Grayson asks Reilly if Waymo will eventually split into two separate companies: Waymo Via focused on autonomous trucking and Waymo One focused on autonomous vehicles. It has always been a question in my mind whether we were at the point in this area of autonomy where you could have a multi-silhouette autonomy company. – Reilly BrennanIs Waymo the only company that could pull off a multi-silhouette approach to autonomy, because of Alphabet's continued long-term financing commitment? It looks that way as Aurora has seemingly shifted a majority of its focus to autonomous trucking. For companies that don't have a Google as a supporter and an investor, I think you probably have to pick one thing you are world-class in. – Reilly BrennanWithout an Alphabet-like financing partner, does Aurora get to a crossroads where they decide to sell off their autonomous vehicle division and focus solely on trucking? It's a possibility as the autonomous vehicle market is beginning to consolidate around Argo AI, Cruise, and Waymo. Then there is May Mobility which is focused on structured routes. Pick-up and drop-offs from airports are a huge opportunity that the autonomous vehicle industry is currently not exploiting. The true opportunity for airports and AVs is in resort towns with limited traffic and high-amounts of passenger traffic during predefined periods of time throughout the year.Looking at the overall investment landscape, Reilly shares a story and his insights into how the team at Trucks VC uncovers potential investment opportunities. When we look at companies, we tend to not really look for ideas, we kind of just wait for great founders to reveal something to us and then we get onboard. – Reilly BrennanWrapping up the conversation, Reilly and Grayson discuss the circular economy and the future of electric vehicles.Recorded on Tuesday, March 1, 2021.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
