The iconic DeLorean DMC-12 rolled off the production line in Belfast on 21st January, 1981. Priced at $25,000, the stainless steel gullwing sportscar was marketed as a luxury item, but its actual features fell short of the hype. The DeLorean Motor Company faced financial troubles, and had ceased production within just two years. But the car found its way into the "Back to the Future" script because John DeLorean, the man behind the car, was embroiled in a $24 million cocaine conspiracy, making headlines during the film's development. In this episode, The Retrospectors explain how DeLorean leveraged his profile within the car industry to raise the funds to finance his dream project; explain how the car's production in Northern Ireland led to untrained workers and corporate deceit of the British government; and reveal how Doc Brown very nearly drove a Mustang... It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. SHANGHAI-MADE TESLA MODEL Y COMING TO EUROPE @mortenlund89"Cat's out the bag: MIC MODEL Y COMING TO EUROPE IN Q3 2021" "The Shanghai-made Tesla Model Y will be available in Europe from the third quarter of 2021, sources say. The news, shared on Twitter by Europe Tesla ship tracker Morten Grove, is significant because Tesla boss Elon Musk has pegged Europe as a key market for the electric crossover vehicle." says The Driven: "Musk believes the Model Y will be so popular that it will outsell the Model 3, Model S and Model X combined – and it appears that this may indeed come to pass. Grove cites a “very credible source”, and there are suggestions that the delay of long-range AWD Model 3s reaching Europe could be a result of Tesla deciding to use shipping capacity for the Model Y instead. The same source reportedly said that the refreshed 2022 Model S and Model X will also reach Europe in the next quarter. The news is also interesting because it is known that Model Y production will be a focus of Tesla's upcoming Berlin gigafactory, which it was thought would be operational by May." https://thedriven.io/2021/06/15/shanghai-made-tesla-model-y-available-in-europe-in-coming-months/ TESLA MODEL S ALL ABOUT EFFICIENCY"the 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus has an EPA rating of 402 miles and a combined city and highway MPGe of 117. The 2020 Model S Long Range only had 373 miles of range a combined city and highway MPGe of 111." but now says Teslarati, the new Long Range is even better: "The 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range received a stellar EPA rating of 405 miles of total range with a combined city/highway MPGe of 120. While Elon Musk noted during the Model S Plaid's unveiling that the vehicle's dual motor configuration has 412 miles of range, the company has listed the vehicle with its official 405-mile EPA rating." Previously the battery was around 104kWh but with the increased efficiency, but this could be 2-4kWh smaller. We wait to see. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-refresh-2021-epa-rating/ NISSAN LAUNCHES NEW NOTE AURA WITH E-POWER"Nissan launched the all-new Note Aura premium compact car in Japan, with sales planned to start in autumn. The all-new Note Aura comes exclusively with Nissan's e-POWER electrified powertrain " says Green Car Congress: "e-POWER uses a highly efficient gasoline engine to generate electricity for the electric motor that propels the vehicle. Nissan introduced the system to market in November 2016 on the Note, followed by a version of the Serena minivan in March 2018, the Kicks SUV e-POWER in June 2020, the new version of the Note in December 2020 featuring the second-generation e-POWER system, and a version of the Qashqai in Europe in February 2021." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/06/20210615-epower.html PEUGEOT OPENS ORDER BOOKS FOR E-RIFTERPEUGEOT has opened the order books for its all-new e-Rifter, one of the latest models to join PEUGEOT's growing range of zero emissions vehicles. Customers can place orders from now, with first deliveries expected in November 2021. The PEUGEOT e-Rifter is available in two trim levels, with prices starting from £30,375*. Unveiled earlier this year, the all-new PEUGEOT e-Rifter is built on PEUGEOT's multi-energy EMP2 platform with a 100kw (136hp) electric powertrain capable of up to 260Nm of torque. The PEUGEOT e-Rifter is powered by a 50kWh battery, allowing the vehicle to achieve up to 172 miles from a single charge under WLTP testing. One of the latest models to form part of PEUGEOT's electrification strategy, the e-Rifter is launched as the brand continues its work to offer an electrified variant for every vehicle in its range by 2025. The new PEUGEOT e-Rifter is available in two trim levels, starting at £30,375* for the standard five-seater Allure Premium. This variant is joined by the five-seater GT variant from £32,455*. Customers also have the option of a long wheelbase seven-seater Allure Premium, with prices from £32,375*. All versions of the e-Rifter are priced below the £35,000 Government Plug in Grant Threshold. LONDON ELECTRIC CARS OFFERS AFFORDABLE CLASSIC MINI ELECTRIC CONVERSION"What LEC offers is a £25,000 electric conversion, excluding the cost of the actual Mini itself. So you have to source your own classic Mini and LEC will then convert the entire car over to an electric powertrain. For that £25,000 starting price, you get a very small 20 kWh battery pack and a 107 horsepower electric motor from a first-gen Nissan Leaf." writes BMW Blog: "If you want a longer range, you can pay a bit extra for a 25 kWh battery (£27,000) or a 30 kWh battery (£30,000). LEC will even fit a 40 kWh battery but it's a special order because the rear seats have to be removed, to fit the massive battery pack." AutoExpress says: "The electric motor was also sourced from the previous-generation Nissan Leaf, and occupies the same space under the bonnet as the old A-Series engine. It also has the same 107bhp output as the Mk1 Leaf, giving it around twice as much power as a standard Mini. Over the next four years, LEC will expand its roster of classic car conversions, with kits for the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, the Ford Anglia and Lincoln Continental Convertible. By 2025, the firm aims to complete 1,000 conversions from its London workshop." https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/06/14/london-electric-cars-offers-affordable-classic-mini-electric-conversion/ https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mini/355232/lec-launches-affordable-ev-conversion-classic-mini MEET THE WORLD'S FIRST 16 TONNE ELECTRIC TRUCK"There were 10 million electric cars on the world's roads at the end of 2020 as registrations soared by 41% in just one year. But when it comes to hauling heavy loads, most of the world's trucks still run on diesel. But that's starting to change with the introduction in Germany of the world's first 16 tonne all-electric truck. The Volta Zero has already been demonstrated in France, Italy and Spain. It's due to enter service by the end of this year." says World Economic Forum: "Electrifying truck fleets will have a positive impact on urban air quality. According to the United Nations, nine out of 10 of us breathe polluted air. Air quality is at its worst in city centres. The 96 entries in the global league table of the worst air quality locations are all cities. Recent research shows 3.4 early deaths are caused by outdoor air pollution every year. The driver sits in the centre of the cab at low-level to mirror the eyeline of pedestrians and car drivers. Conventional truck blindpots are eliminated by what the makers call a “glasshouse-style cab” with 220⁰ visibility, supplemented by cameras in place of conventional mirrors." https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/06/electric-truck-cut-city-air-pollution/ GEELY'S EV BRAND ZEEKR SELLS OUT OF DELIVERABLE CARS FOR THIS YEAR"Zeekr, a new premium electric vehicle (EV) brand launched this year by Geely (GEELY.UL), has sold out of deliveries for this year, Chief Executive An Conghui said on Tuesday." according to Reuters: "Geely, the owner of Volvo Cars, in April launched Zeekr to target growing Chinese demand for premium EVs that has boosted sales for Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Chinese peer Nio Inc (NIO.N).  Executives said that Zeekr would use a direct sales model to manage pricing and inventory. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   DACIA’S NEW EV STARTS FROM €10,920 IN GERMANY "When Dacia first announced the Spring Electric as a concept back in March last year, it led with the claim that it’d be “Europe’s most affordable all-electric vehicle”. Well, now it’s delivering on that promise, because in Germany at least, prices for the production version will start at €10,920. " says TopGear.com: "Technically of course, that’s a €20,490 start price for the base-spec Comfort trim level, but the German government provides a €9,570 grant. Sadly, there are still no plans for the Spring to make it to the UK, but let’s have a quick recap of the specs anyway. It combines a 27.4kWh battery with a 44bhp electric motor (no, that’s not a typo) for a WLTP range of 143 miles."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/hold-dacias-new-ev-starts-eu10920-germany   ROMANIANS CAN BUY ELECTRIC DACIA SPRING FOR ONLY EUR 7,700 "Romanian carmaker Dacia, part of the French Groupe Renault, has started the production of Dacia Spring, its first electric model. Dacia has set the starting price at EUR 18,100 while the state is giving grants of about EUR 10,400, so the final price is EUR 7,700. It makes it the cheapest electric car in Romania and beyond. " according to Balkan Green Energy News: "The interest among Romanian buyers is enormous. Dacia received more than 1,500 orders for its first electric model in the first four hours after it made applications available, on March 20, local media reported. For comparison, that’s how many electric cars were sold in Romania in 2019. Dacia said orders are now temporarily closed."   https://balkangreenenergynews.com/romanians-can-buy-electric-dacia-spring-for-only-eur-7700/   KIA E-NIRO LAUNCHED WITH GRANT FRIENDLY SUB-£35K PRICETAG "Kia has revealed a new long-range 64kWh battery version of its e-Niro electric SUV with a price tag of £34,945. The new model undercuts the recently announced lower maximum list price threshold for the Government’s plug-in car grant (PICG) and so qualifies for the cash incentive. Cars costing more than £35,000 are no longer eligible for the grant" reveals AutoExpress. The new '2' version features the long-range 64kWh battery pack and high-power 150kW motor as higher-specification e-Niro models, while offering a £34,945 on-the-road price: "The new, sub £35k long-range e-Niro is available in ‘2’ trim, which includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels, a reversing camera system and rear parking sensors. There’s also an adaptive cruise control system that can bring the car to a complete stop and restart it in traffic jams, plus keyless entry and go. Kia claims the e-Niro ‘2’ Long Range is capable of travelling up to 282 miles on a single charge according to WLTP testing, and up to 382 miles in city driving. Indeed, the brand now claims that this new model has the greatest range of any sub-£35k electric vehicle."   Adds to Citroen e-C4 and Vauxhall Mokka-e, and Vivaro-e van.   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/kia/e-niro/354578/long-range-kia-e-niro-launched-grant-friendly-sub-ps35k-pricetag   AUDI Q4 E-TRON PRODUCTION STARTS Audi Q4 e-tron compact electric SUV production begins in Zwickau, Germany, alongside the VW ID.4. The Q4 e-tron will be sized between the Q3 and Q5 SUVs, and will also gain a Sportback version next year. The Q4 e-tron is expected to have specs similar to those of the ID.4's AWD version, optioned with the longer-range 82-kW battery.   Autoweek points out: "The Q4 is set to go on sale stateside at the end of this year, and will be followed next year by the Q4 Sportback. Audi's baby EV will take on the likes of the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the Tesla Model Y, but will likely stay north of the price range of some other new competitors, including the Nissan Ariya and the Kia EV6. After all, there'll be premium price to pay for the four rings on the front."   "Working alongside their colleagues from Volkswagen, more than one hundred Audi employees prepared for the start of production—from production planning and technical development through to quality assurance. The press tools for producing the body parts all come from Audi’s own toolmaking shop. " says GreenCarCongress: "Zwickau and the Audi brand enjoy a long tradition: The Audi car plants were established here in 1909. The Volkswagen plant there has been converted to an all-electric plant and is now an integral part of the Group’s electric offensive. The Audi Q4 e-tron will be unveiled to a global audience in the middle of April and launched on the European markets in the summer of 2021. By 2025, Audi plans to launch more than 20 fully electric models"   https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a35927317/what-to-expect-from-the-audi-q4-e-tron/   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/03/20210324-zwickau.html   VW BOSS SAYS ‘EMBARRASSING’ RULES STOP CHEAP ELECTRIC CAR IMPORTS "Managing director of Volkswagen Australia Michael Bartsch says he cannot convince his German head office to supply Australians with the company’s top-selling mid-range electronic vehicles because of “embarrassing” local laws." says Sydney Morning Herald: "As a result, Australians cannot buy models popular in North America and Europe, such as the ID.3 hatchback and the larger ID.4 SUV, which would be significantly cheaper than the range of Teslas. If they were available in Australia they would cost around $50,000 and $60,000 respectively. A spokesman for Energy and Emissions Minister Angus Taylor said the Morrison government would not be “lectured about vehicles emissions by a car manufacturer that has a track record of deceiving motorists and violating clean-air laws.” In 2020, electric vehicles made up 0.75 per cent of new car sales in Australia, up from 0.6 per cent in 2019."   https://www.smh.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/vw-boss-says-embarrassing-rules-stop-cheap-electric-car-imports-20210322-p57d85.html   FORD ESCAPE PHEV BATTERY PROBLEM SOLVED "Ford unveiled the 2020 Escape at the 2019 New York Auto show, promising that a plug-in hybrid variant would arrive for 2020. But that didn’t happen. In August, Ford had to pause selling the Kuga PHEV, the European version of the Escape, due to a fire risk with the battery." sys Motor1: " The company has resolved the issue in Europe, though production for the US is now facing another problem – the semiconductor shortage. However, the delay shouldn’t last much longer."   https://www.motor1.com/news/496212/ford-escape-phev-battery-delayed/   TESLA BEGINS ACCEPTING BITCOIN "Tesla, the world's biggest electric vehicle company, is accepting Bitcoin as payment for its cars, according to its founder Elon Musk. Mr Musk made the announcement through Twitter on Wednesday. “Tesla is using only internal & open source software & operates Bitcoin nodes directly," Mr Musk said in the tweet. "Bitcoin paid to Tesla will be retained as Bitcoin, not converted to fiat currency.". Tesla has indicated that it will not use a third-party payment processor. Instead, it will start accepting Bitcoin directly and add the cryptocurrency into its own investment portfolio." reports The National News: "In the traditional model, customers first transfer their digital assets from their wallets to a third-party cryptocurrency payment processor. It would then convert Bitcoin into a fiat currency, such as dollars or dirhams, and transfer the final amount to the beneficiary’s account. Currently, telecom company AT&T and technology company Microsoft accept Bitcoin through a third-party payment service provider such as BitPay." Its for the U.S. for now.   https://www.thenationalnews.com/business/technology/tesla-begins-accepting-bitcoin-as-payment-for-its-evs-musk-says-1.1190339   JEEP WRANGLER 4XE DRIVETRAIN " The Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s powertrain is very similar to the powertrain in every other Wrangler model. Like all of those, Wrangler 4xe has an engine up front, the new 2.0-litre turbo four, in this case. It sends power to the transmission, and on through to the transfer case. The transfer case is where that power is split between the Dana axles in front and back, and from there, its power to the ground. To this highly conventional 4×4 driveline setup, a few components are added." explains Driving.ca: "The first of these are a pair of electric motors—one built into the 8-speed automatic transmission, and another attached directly to the engine itself. The front motor applies power to the crankshaft, and the rear motor applies additional electric power through the transmission. Output from the two motors and gasoline engine are managed by a specialized control system that ensures the powertrain is as seamless and invisible as possible from the driver’s seat. By the way, the same hardware that makes that all possible also enhances Wrangler 4xe’s power output considerably. With 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of partial-electric torque, drivers can expect throttle response to be off the charts. That’s nearly as much torque as an SRT 392 powered Rubicon, but while using a fraction of the gas."   https://www.driving.ca/jeep/wrangler/features/feature-story/how-does-the-new-jeep-wrangler-4xe-drivetrain-work       It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. We'll start with you weekend long reads - if you have 10 - 15 mins I recommend these articles:     TIME FOR OHIO TO EMBRACE ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION https://eu.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/2021/03/19/opinion-time-ohio-embrace-electric-transportation/4767483001/   SEATTLE’S VISION FOR AN ALL-ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM https://southseattleemerald.com/2021/03/20/weekend-long-reads-seattles-vision-for-an-all-electric-transportation-system/   A CHAT WITH DEREK JENKINS, LUCID MOTORS SENIOR V.P. OF DESIGN https://www.autoblog.com/2021/03/18/lucid-motors-derek-jenkins-interview-gravity-air-electric-vehicles/#slide-2262267   PATENT REVEALS NEW IMAGES OF LUCID MOTORS’ GRAVITY SUV "Lucid’s astute forum members have uncovered news the automaker may or may not want the public to see yet. Patent images of Lucid Motors’ upcoming Gravity SUV were uncovered in a filing with the EUIPO." asys electrk: "Lucid has added a lot more glass to its roof compared to the concept images. This should let in a lot more natural light and help the interior cabin feel roomier overall.  front end appears to be slightly bigger, while the back end is noticeably so. The concept back end sort of bubbled out, but it appears Lucid has now moved the rear bumper out further. This should allow for more cargo. Additionally, it looks like Lucid plans to add slightly wider glass to the rear as well, again allowing more natural light within the SUV and better visibility looking out the back."   https://electrek.co/2021/03/18/patent-reveals-new-images-of-lucid-motors-gravity-suv/   Let's mop up some of the news from Thursday as the UK cut the EV grant from £3000 to £2500, but more importantly slashed the threshold from £50k to £35k, and even more importantly did it immediately.   UK EV PRICES REDUCED DUE TO GRANT CHANGE   "Many car firms will now be adjusting their prices, like Citroen, to come in under the ceiling. Citroen’s price changes will mean all variants of the electric hatchback will now qualify for the government’s plug-in car grant. The French firm reduced the price of is top-spec e-C4 Shine Plus models by £550 meaning that the entirety of the range is eligible for the grant." says CarDealer Magazine: "On the road pricing for the e-C4 now starts from £30,895 to £32,495, inclusive of the £2,500 grant. MG said on Friday that it will continue to offer buyers of its electric vehicles a £3,000 discount. The firm pledged to make up the additional £500 until the end of the month in a critical plate change month for the motor trade."   AutoExpress add: "Shine Plus version of its new all-electric family hatchback is the most popular variant. It is just one of many electric cars on sale in Britain that may now receive a retail price cut in order to still qualify for the newly reduced grant.  This particular e-C4 was previously priced from £35,495 and the new on-the-road price stands at £34,995. The e-C4 makes use of a 134bhp electric motor and 50kWh battery system and Citroen claims a maximum range of 217 miles on a full charge."   As for the VW range, they opted not to change any prices. But did put out a press release reminding you that two of their ID.3 models were available under the threshold unlike just one which I said yesterday.  “D.3 Life Pro and ID.3 Life Pro Performance.  The ID.3 Life Pro Performance went on sale late last year and has since gone on to be crowned ‘Small Electric Car of the Year’ by What Car? at its Car of the Year Awards 2021. It features a 204 PS motor and 58 kWh battery (net capacity), which provides a WLTP range of 263 miles.  the ID.3 Life Pro was introduced and offers a new motor option and lower price for entry into the ID.3 range. It retains the 58 kWh batteryt”   And the new ID.3 Pure model with a 45kWh battery is out later this year.   https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/car-firms-move-to-cut-ev-prices-after-governments-shock-move-to-slash-plug-in-car-grant-funding/219685   HOW THE PORSCHE TAYCAN'S INNOVATIVE ELECTRIC MOTORS WORK "Many EVs such as the Audi e-tron use a more affordable asynchronous machine (ASM) or asynchronous electric motor, but Porsche uses a permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM) that it says is less prone to overheating." says Carbuzz: "Describing the supply and control of three-phase AC voltage for the PSM, Porsche says: "The speed of the motor is determined by the frequency at which the alternating voltage oscillates around the zero point from plus to minus. In Taycan motors, the pulse inverter sets the frequency of the rotating field in the stator, thereby regulating the speed of the rotor."   https://carbuzz.com/news/heres-how-the-porsche-taycans-innovative-electric-motors-work   EUROPEAN ENGINEERS TACKLE EV LIGHTWEIGHTING "Engineers at the Technological Institute of Aragon (ITAINNOVA) here are coordinating a new European Union initiative to develop lightweight components for electric vehicles." says AssemblyMag.coM: "These technologies can directly contribute to improving vehicle efficiency in terms of kilowatt hours consumed per kilometer, as well as vehicle autonomy, and also reduce environmental impact."...focusing on three different components: a cross beam, a suspension control arm, and a battery clamping and packing system."   https://www.assemblymag.com/articles/96240-european-engineers-tackle-ev-lightweighting   FOUR EVS MERCEDES IS BRINGING TO THE U.S. BY 2022 "The US was supposed to get the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV but that didn’t happen and it never will. But that’s okay because the US will be getting four EVs over the next two years from the German luxury automaker’s EQ sub-brand. " according to InsideEVs: "Interestingly, two sedans will arrive first, not SUVs. The 2022 Mercedes EQS sedan will go on sale this fall and will soon enter production in Germany. The report didn’t mention a reveal date, but it’s likely around the corner. The EQE sedan is based on the same platform as the EQS and deliveries will start in 2022. The driving range is in the area of 400 miles.  Mercedes-EQ’s two electric SUVs will be built in its Tuscaloosa, Alabama factory in 2022 (this was announced in December). Each one is an SUV variant of the EQS and EQE sedans and shares the same name."   https://insideevs.com/news/494819/these-four-evs-mercedes-bringing-us-2022   NISSAN IN TWEET STORM AS E-POWER AD HITS A FALSE NOTE "Twitter has been ablaze with users airing their views on what they consider misleading claims by Nissan. They say the company hit the wrong note when proclaiming that the e-Power drive has a “100% electric motor-driven system.”" reports electrive: " the drive’s main energy source is not the battery but a gasoline engine that acts exclusively as a generator. Twitter users know that. Their responses ranged from irritation – “wait, is it a hybrid?” – to distain as this example shows: “Wait a minute. You just invented a car with a gas burning engine which powers an electric motor? I mean… Congratulations, Nissan. You just invented the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. What a billion dollar facepalm.” Nissan is not alone in trying to make their cars sound greener than they are. We remember that Toyota and Lexus would repeatedly advertise their simple hybrid models as “self-charging”. A claim so misleading, the Norwegian Consumer Agency banned such commercials."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/17/nissan-in-tweet-storm-as-e-power-ad-hits-a-false-note/   SPAIN, SEAT, & IBERDROLA WILL USE EU FUNDS FOR EV BATTERY FACTORY "Spain plans to use funding from the European Union to create a public-private consortium with Volkswagen Group’s SEAT, based in Spain, and the power company Iberdrola to build Spain’s first EV battery factory. " says CleanTechnica: "Battery production would create many jobs, and it would be supporting the key need for much more climate-fighting cleantech, in this case electric vehicles. Spain was looking to revamp Nissan’s main car plant near Barcelona into a battery production facility in order to preserve thousands of jobs. That plant closed back in December.".   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/03/17/spain-seat-iberdrola-will-use-eu-funds-for-ev-battery-factory/   VOLVO GROUP VENTURE CAPITAL INVESTS IN DRIIVZ EV CHARGING SOFTWARE COMPANY Volvo Group Venture Capital has invested in Driivz Ltd., a leading global EV charging software company which has developed a platform for managing large charging networks for electric vehicles from end-to-end. The Driivz platform functions as an operating system for EV charging networks and is used by the operators of charging points, EV fleets and other key players in the ecosystem. TESLA DROPS PRICES OF MODEL 3 BY AS MUCH AS 24% "Tesla (TSLA) cut the price of its base variants of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y sports utility vehicle but raised the prices for performance models in the U.S.  Tesla stock fell. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus is $1,000 cheaper at $36,990, while a Model Y Standard Range costs $2,000 less and is priced at $39,990. But the prices for the Performance variant of the Model 3 and Y each rose $1,000. The Model 3 now costs $55,990 and Model Y rose to $60,990." says INvestors.com "In Japan, the base price of the standard version of a Model 3 was cut to 4.29 million yen, which is about $40,500. The long-range version now goes for 4.99 million yen or $47,200. Tesla hopes the price cuts will spur sales in Japan, where it sold fewer than 2,000 cars last year.   Why? Forthcoming tax credit? Increasing competition? Market share?   Electrek coment from Eric: In Vermont, the $2500 state tax credit applies to vehicles with a base model under $40,000. Before today, only the Model 3 qualified (as well as the VW iD.4, but not the Ford Mustang-e). After today, the Model Y now qualifies for the state credit. Even if you purchase a higher priced model. I wonder how many other states have a $40,000 base cap? That might be the reason to drop the base vehicle but not the more popular LR AWD version.   User NeverFollow: The $40k Model Y SR includes Premium Interior so it is even a better deal than the $37k Model 3 SR+, also the Model Y SR can have a tow hitch. The Premium Interior has LED fog lamps and Premium Audio (14 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 amps). Anyway $1,000 when you need to spend $40,000 don't make a big difference.   https://twitter.com/teslamotorsjp/status/1361939264716427265?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1361939264716427265%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdriveteslacanada.ca%2Fmodel-3%2Ftesla-drops-prices-model-3-japan-by-as-much-as-24%2F   https://www.investors.com/news/tesla-stock-model-3-model-y-prices-slashed-amid-ev-competition/?src=A00220   ALL-ELECTRIC VOLVO XC RECHARGE CONFIRMED FOR AUSTRALIA IN MID-2021 "The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric will be launched in Australia in August, Volvo’s Australian arm has confirmed. The all-electric compact SUV will be launched shortly after the arrival of its plug-in hybrid stablemate, and will be the Swedish-Chinese carmaker’s first electric passenger car to reach the Australian auto market." reports TheDrive.io: "With a 72.5kWh battery (usable capacity) offering around 325km real-world driving range, the all-electric XC40 Recharge promises to offer a hefty 660Nm torque from its 300kW motors, and is expected to fall just above the Tesla Model 3 in terms of price. It will join a limited, but gradually widening, electric vehicle market in Australia to compete against the Mercedes-Benz EQC and the Jaguar I-Pace."   https://thedriven.io/2021/02/17/all-electric-volvo-xc-recharge-confirmed-for-australia-in-mid-2021/   NEW NISSAN QASHQAI - 'FAKE' EV Hot off selling 34,000 units in the UK last year, in a Covid year remember, they have revealed the new Qashqai. "The 2021 Qashqai comes following Nissan’s recent announcement that it has sold over one million crossovers in the UK alone since the first generation Qashqai launched back in 2007." reports AutoExpress: "it differs from hybrid systems used in cars like the Toyota Prius because the combustion unit never drives the wheels directly. Instead, it acts as a generator, providing charge to a small battery, which then sends energy to the electric motor.  According to Nissan, this gives the e-Power unit characteristics we’ve come to expect from fully electric vehicles, such as instant torque delivery and seamless acceleration."   "Nissan is in line with current mainstream thinking in not offering a diesel engine. Instead, buyers, leasers and PCP-ers can choose from a 1.3-litre mild-hybrid and a range-extender hybrid called e-Power." says Car magazine: "This innovative drivetrain option is set to roll out in the Qashqai in 2022. It's a traditional hybrid in that there's no plug-in option. It's a parallel hybrid set-up where the engine is effectively a generator used to charge the battery pack, which then powers the electric motor to drive the wheels. Nissan says the e-Power Qashqai will enjoy the throttle response of an EV and even comes with Nissan's 'e-Pedal' technology that first debuted on the Mk2 Nissan Leaf. Backing off the throttle will deliver up to 0.2g of regenerative deceleration. The 1.5-litre petrol engine in the E-Power version features a variable compression ratio and is tuned for maximum efficiency when delivering charge to the battery pack. "   "The e-Power techology has been seen on Japan-only Note superminis but it is the first time it has been introduced in Europe. Nissan has beefed up the system for the Qashqai, though." says Sunday Times Driving "The other two powertrain options available for the new Qashqai are both 1.3-litre petrols with mild hybrid technology.   "Designer Matt Weaver said the shift to electrified-only powertrains influenced the new Qashqai’s styling because it necessitated a heightened focus on aerodynamics, highlighting the front-end’s vertical air channels and the car's slightly tapered shape as a key differentiator over the previous, non-electrified car." according to Autocar: "Chosen to offer greater affordability over a 48V system, the 12V set-up recovers energy under deceleration to power on-board systems when the engine is stopped and provide a small torque boost when accelerating."   Whatcar wasn't impressed by the engine: "Unusually for a range extender, the e-Power’s pure electric range is tiny – just 1.8 miles – meaning the engine has to run most of the time, instead of just being there as a back-up. But Nissan claims that it’s able to run at lower revs than the engine in a conventional hybrid when starting up and accelerating, making it quieter and more efficient; official fuel economy figures are still to be announced."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/qashqai/103735/new-2021-nissan-qashqai-revealed-hybrid-powertrain   https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/nissan/qashqai/   https://www.driving.co.uk/news/new-cars/nissan-reveals-2021-qashqai-suv/   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/all-electrified-2021-nissan-qashqai-brings-bold-new-look   https://www.whatcar.com/news/2021-nissan-qashqai-revealed-full-details-and-exclusive-pics/n22676   https://europe.nissaanews.com/en-GB/releases/all-new-nissan-qashqai   TEXAS FORD F-150 HYBRID OWNERS USING GENERATOR FUNCTIONS TO WEATHER THE STORM "With Texas, the biggest truck market in the country, currently in the middle of a nasty winter storm and subsequent widespread power outages, we've been wondering if anyone has put the generator capabilities of the 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid to the test. The answer is, unsurprisingly, yes. A few users at F150Gen14.com shared photos and experiences using the generator function, and they're all rather glowing." says Autoblog: "The truck's large fuel tank meant he could run it a long time without refueling, which could have been an issue as local gas pumps weren't working. We would bet that the truck also produces far fewer emissions than those outdoor generators, too.  All of these owners said they had purchased the hybrid with the upgraded 7.2-kW generator capability, though all hybrids come standard with 2.4-kW generator ability."   PLus: "Ford asks Texas dealers to loan out F-150s with ProPower onboard generators". And those with home storage such as Tesla Powerwalls and other brands have also found how invaluable home storage can me.   The Honda E has an 1.5kW AC socket to tap into it's 35.5kWh battery.   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/18/2022-ford-f150-powerboost-hybrid-generator-texas-winter-blackout/   https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/powerboost-7-2kw-onboard-generator-saves-the-day-3-days-during-texas-power-outage.1826/   BENTLEY TO OFFER ONLY ELECTRIC OR HYBRID CARS BY 2026 "Electrification is becoming more commonplace within car manufacturers as we near the deadline for the UK government's ban on the sale of all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 - and Bentley is no exception." says Drivetribe: "The high-end automaker has this week announced that it is concentrating on researching and developing sustainable and recyclable electric motors, in a bid to assist the legislatorial requirement for automakers to cease production of petrol and diesel cars from 2030 in order to avoid any hefty fines coming their way. As it stands, Bentley are due to release PHEV versions of the much-loved Continental GT and the status symbol that is of course, the Flying Spur. We also continue to wait in anticipation of Bentley announcing it's first fully-electric model in 2025 - hopefully the EXP 100 GT will be looked back in history as something exemplar in having changed the course of the design for Bentley's future models."   https://drivetribe.com/p/bentley-to-offer-only-electric-eJUzXojwTUyEd-0xi4l8ag   https://www.bentley-press.be/bentley-sets-out-path-to-sustainable-recyclable-electric-motors     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK With my 1000th podcast around the corner, what kind of media coverage do you want in 2021?   Send me your answer: hello@evnewsdaily.com     You can listen to all 996 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #804   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon RICHARD LUPINSKY   'ONE MILLION MILE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY IS NOW 'READY TO PRODUCE' "The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has said the Ningde-based manufacturing firm has the capability of making a battery pack that can last for about 16 years, powering an electric vehicle for 1.24 million miles." writes Newsweek: "According to the SCMP, CATL signed a two-year contract to supply batteries to Tesla in February this year, and its technology is set to be incorporated into the Model 3 range of vehicles being made at Musk's new gigafactory located in Shanghai."   On Elon: "We're getting along well and he's a fun guy. He's talking about cost all day long, and I'm making sure we have the solutions."   https://www.newsweek.com/tesla-elon-musk-one-million-mile-battery-ready-produce-chinese-partner-catl-says-1509293   FORD REVEALS ESCAPE PHEV PRICE, RANGE AND MORE FOR U.S. "Ford announced its first new plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. market, the Ford Escape PHEV, which earlier was launched in Europe as Ford Kuga PHEV. The Escape PHEV might be one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids and a major competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It will start at less than $35,000 (MSRP), before destination charge and an eligible federal tax credit of probably over $6,700." says InsideEVs: " The EPA-estimated all-electric range will be about 37 miles (59.5 km) so really not bad, although the RAV4 Prime is able to go up to 42 miles (67.6 km). The battery pack (14.4 kWh) is installed under the second-row seats."   Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer said: “The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency. The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats. Escape also has an additional 11 miles of all-electric driving range before it uses a drop of gas.”   https://insideevs.com/news/427357/ford-escape-phev-price-range-us/   VOLKSWAGEN REPLACES DIESS WITH RALF BRANDSTÄTTER FOR THE VW BRAND "Ralf Brandstätter is the Volkswagen brand's new CEO as a promotion over his previous role as the marque's chief operating officer. He takes over the role from Herbert Diess who is currently the CEO of both the VW brand and VW Group as a whole. " reports Motor1.com: "The company's board positions this change as letting Diess put a greater emphasis on running the business, rather than splitting his focus between two roles.  The shakeup comes amid VW having some problems in Europe. The company had to halt deliveries of the new Golf because of an issue with the software for the emergency call function – a mandated feature in Europe. The problem affected around 15,000 cars that the automaker had already delivered to customers.  There are also rumors about problems with the software suite in the company's forthcoming ID.3 electric car. The exact nature of the issue isn't clear, but elements within the system are allegedly not able to communicate correctly. There are reportedly over 10,000 technicians working to solve the problem."   Spiegel.de reports (Google Translate from German): "There is also a problem with the electric ID.3, with which VW wants to build a Golf successor in the mass market and establish an E series with billions of dollars in investment. The model from the Zwickau plant, which is to be ordered from mid-June, will initially only come with a slimmed-down range of functions. Reason: software delays."   https://www.motor1.com/news/427604/volkswagen-new-boss/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/vw-konzernchef-diess-gibt-fuehrung-der-kernmarke-ab-a-5a78ea2b-a531-4f94-b995-dae144216e5a   CHINA'S BYD IN TALKS TO SUPPLY JLR FROM UK BATERY PLANT "Chinese EV and battery specialist BYD is in talks with Jaguar Land Rover to supply automotive batteries from a UK plant, a source with knowledge of the situation said." writes Automotive News Europe: "JLR CEO Ralf Speth has previously said the UK needs its own battery cell production, but operated independently of JLR. The UK would be BYD’s first European battery cell factory but the company is also looking at other European locations, the source said. JLR currently sells the Jaguar I-Pace electric crossover, which is built by Magna Steyr in Austria. It plans to produce a full-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan at its Castle Bromwich factory in England."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/chinas-byd-talks-supply-jlr-uk-battery-plant   WIRELESS CHARGING UPDATE "Wireless parking places, if they work well with a variety of vehicles, are primed to be part of the gold rush. WiTricity's charging coils, which China chose for its national wireless standard in May, can reach parked electric sports cars and SUVs alike with clearance ranging from 4 in.–10 in." says CNBC: "Charging vehicles in motion is on the table with existing technology too, since the distance between a car's carriage and the road stays fairly constant. Fellow wireless charging company Qualcomm Halo, which WiTricity acquired last year, has built a 300-ft test track in France that can charge cars driving at highway speeds. And Israeli start-up Electreon is electrifying short stretches of road in Israel and Sweden. If automakers can settle on one standard technology, omnipresent, automatic charging stations would let electric vehicles go farther on smaller batteries, reminiscent of Tesla's imagined fuel-free planes. Hands-free charging also will grow more essential if cars get more autonomous, since they won't be able to plug themselves in."   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/researchers-work-on-the-next-generation-of-wireless-charging-for-evs.html   ALL-NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER The New Fiat 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback makes its debut today following the successful unveiling of the New 500 ‘la Prima’ convertible in March. The New 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback – including the fitment of the easyWallbox – is priced at £26,995, including PiCG. The lithium-ion batteries, with a capacity of 42kWh, give the New 500 a range of up to 199 miles in the WLTP cycle. To optimise charging time, the New 500 electric is equipped with an 85kW fast charge system. The New 500 also comes with a 11kW onboard AC charger. Sherpa mode optimises the available resources to reduce fuel consumption to a minimum -  maximum speed is limited to 50mph; accelerator response is managed in order to reduce energy consumption; and deactivation of both the climate control system and heated seats. The electric motor has an output of 87kW, providing a maximum speed of 93mph (self-limited) and acceleration from zero to 62mph in 9 seconds and zero to 31mph in 3.1 seconds. The New 500 electric is the first FCA car to be equipped with the new UConnect 5 infotainment system, the connected platform designed for the future. Developed with the idea of providing customers with a completely new user experience, UConnect 5 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operating systems and can be used in wireless mode. My Remote: checks the battery charge level from a smartphone; schedule vehicle charging during the most convenient time periods; know the exact location of the car; lock and unlock the doors and set the climate control system.   MERCEDES GLA 250 E 2020 REVIEW Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e Coupé, CLA 250 e Shooting Brake and B 250 e plug-in hybrids are available to order now.  . The GLA with plug-in hybrid drive system will follow a few weeks later   "The new GLA 250 e is plug-in hybrid motoring at its best, and for many prospective buyers this could be the GLA to go for. Impressive all-electric running combines with surprisingly sporty yet economical hybrid drive when the petrol engine is brought into play." is how AutoExpress reviewed it: "Joining electrified versions of the latest CLA and CLA Shooting Brake in British Mercedes showrooms is the new GLA 250 e, which shapes up as a rival for plug-in hybrid versions of the latest BMW X1 and X2 and the Volvo XC40. Total system power stands at 215bhp and 450Nm, while the electric power is stored in a 15.6kWh battery. The GLA 250 e can recharge at 24kW."   38 miles on EV power, 86mph on the motor.   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/gla/352426/new-mercedes-gla-250-e-2020-review   The Mercedes B 250 e is now on sale, with first deliveries expected in late summer. It is only available with AMG Line Executive equipment grade or higher, so prices start from £35,280.   CHINA’S EV MARKET IS RECOVERING "In China, exactly 55,829 battery electric cars and 14,370 plug-in hybrids from local production were sold in May. The sales figures for so-called New Energy Vehicles were thus 25.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year, but 19.5 per cent higher than in April 2020." reports Chris Randall for electrive: "The best-selling electrified model in May was the Tesla Model 3: CPCA statistics show 11,095 units of the locally manufactured American electric sedan sold in China. That is a good three times as many as in April (3,635). However, sales of the Model 3 in April were also down sharply on March (10,160). Tesla itself probably contributed to the new high with a price reduction for the Model 3 Standard Range announced at the end of April. "   That price drop kept it in the window for Chinese subsidies. And what about the Long Range RWD Model 3 they started delivering at the end of May?   David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData: "This is the second consecutive monthly rise for the Chinese vehicle market, as it rebounds from sharp declines in the first quarter caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. China was first into the COVID-19 crisis and first out of it, so developments in China’s economy are being watched very closely."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/09/chinas-ev-market-is-recovering-sowly/   WOULD YOU SWAP TO AN ELECTRIC CAR IF THEY WERE £6,000 CHEAPER? Government could announce a scrappage scheme for only electric vehicles Motorists who scrap an old petrol or diesel car would get £6,000 off a new EV Plans could be announced next month, according to report from The Telegraph It mirrors plans in Germany that are part of a €130bn Covid-19 stimulus package EV buyers there will receive an industry and government-backed subsidy of €9k   "It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric." writes This Is Money: "The price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon."   Read more here: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8398385/Boris-Johnson-considering-slashing-prices-new-EVs-6-000.html   Add £3000 for the PiCG and that's £9000 off the price.   Fiona Howarth, chief executive at Octopus Electric Vehicles: "'Consumers who want to switch to greener driving can be put off by the more expensive initial outlay for an electric vehicle compared to petrol or diesel. But by reducing this cost, EVs will become more affordable and dramatically increase uptake. In 2019, around 100 people every day were losing their life due to poor air quality. The government can really make a difference and save lives by encouraging the switch to clean, electric cars."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 228 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #790   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 26th May 2020. MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES ITS ELECTRIC EQV MINIVAN FOR ~$64,000 "Mercedes-Benz is launching its electric EQV minivan in Europe for €71,388.10 (incl. 19% VAT), which is the equivalent of a sticker price of about ~$64,000 USD." says Electrek: "The electric EQV MPV was first unveiled last year when we learned that it is equipped with a 100 kWh battery pack, but the company is limiting the usable capacity to 90 kWh. They believe it’s going to result in 405 km (250 miles) of range on a single charge. To charge the battery pack, the EQV is equipped with an 11 kW on-board charger and it can DC fast-charge at up to 110 kW, which Mercedes claims can charge the battery pack from 10 to 80% in less than 45 min. The electric van will be available as part of its V-Class lineup in Europe, but no availability has been confirmed for the North American market."   https://electrek.co/2020/05/26/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-minivan-price/   CarBuzz said: "Like the EQC SUV, the EQV features a similar sealed-off grille design. Riding on 18-inch wheels, it’s certainly one of the smarter vans around. Although still unconfirmed for the local market, the EQV will be offered elsewhere with two wheelbase lengths, the longer one stretching to 135 inches. It can seat up to eight passengers and accommodate 36.4 cubic feet of their luggage. Pretty nifty for a zero-emissions vehicle."   https://carbuzz.com/cars/mercedes-benz/eqv   And Green Car Reports says: "A new feature offers a particularly efficient and comfortable driving style: recuperation level DAUTO. According to the maxim “drive ahead and save energy” information from the security assistants, the navigation system and the camera get connected and adjust the strength of the recuperation situation—specifically and in real time. In addition, four driving programs help the customer to choose individually between the maximum of comfort and the maximum of range while driving."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/05/20200526-eqv.html   KIA IS CONSIDERING AN ULTRA-SMALL ELECTRIC CAR "Kia is examining plans to build a purely electric miniature car in the style of the Citroën Ami. Although the South Korean company has not revealed a timetable for these plans, it seems that Kia is already considering a new distribution model for the electric microcar." says Carrie from Electrive: "In a candid interview with AutoExpress Emilio Herrera, COO of Kia in Europe confirmed the company’s considerations. The mini electric car for urban areas – if it is realized – will be offered for rent globally via a subscription model. “The idea is to have a dedicated platform from Kia that we could possibly share with Hyundai,” Herrera said. The Kia manager did not name a timetable for a possible market launch of the small electric car. AutoExpress is expecting a corresponding production model in 2022. Citroën introduced the Ami at the end of February. The small two-seater in a strongly stylised design is to be available at prices starting at 6,000 euros or a monthly leasing rate of 19.99 euros (four years, 10,000 kilometres per year) in France. Pricing models for other European markets have not yet been revealed. Since Herrera spoke of a “dedicated platform” for the very small electric car, it does not seem likely to be the skateboard platform from Canoo. "   https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/26/kia-is-considering-an-ultra-small-electric-car/   RUMOR: IN APRIL TESLA RECEIVED ABOUT 15,000 ORDERS FOR MIC MODEL 3 LR "According to the Chinese media (via Moneyball), Tesla has received in April close to 15,000 orders for the new Long Range Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3. It's an unofficial number." reports InsideEVs: "t's great news that the demand for the upcoming LR (rear-wheel drive) is high because Tesla intends to produce in China some 4,000 Model 3 per week as early as in June. The last month was weaker than expected, as Model 3 registrations amounted to 4,312, up to 3-4 times less than anticipated production output (at 3,000 per week). It's explained that consumers were delaying orders of the Standard Range Model 3 to get a more attractive price (after changes in subsidies). Only time will tell whether sales in China will really stabilize at 4,000 per week (or 12,000 per month) for all versions (SR and LR)."   https://insideevs.com/news/425337/tesla-15000-orders-model-3-lr/   AUDI E-TRON IS THE NEW KING OF NORWAY "Norway remains one of the most fascinating auto markets in the world. With a 70% plug-in vehicle market share in the first 4 months of 2020, there is nothing that comes close to it. That isn’t an overnight figure either — the country has been far ahead of any other market in terms of plug-in vehicle market share for several years."That said, the market leader is now a vehicle that would typically be outside the price range of a working class family in other countries, but Norway is a rich country (very rich country) with adventurous terrain, so it makes a bit of sense. The Audi e-tron isn’t just first — it’s far ahead in the #1 spot so far this year." says CleanTechnica: "A German model that was in the #1 spot for many, many months, the Volkswagen e-Golf, is solidly in second at 6% market share. After that, you’ve got the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona EV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, and then a long tail of remaining PEVs. You also have a handful of plug-less vehicles scattered into the overall sales rankings (see charts below)."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/audi-e-tron-is-the-new-king-of-norway/   MACRON DEMANDS CARMAKERS TURN TO ‘MADE IN FRANCE’ FOR €8BN VIRUS AID "French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled on Tuesday (26 May) an €8 billion aid package for the auto industry, which includes increased subsidies for electric car purchases" says Euractiv.com: "Negotiations with the likes of Citroën, Peugeot and Renault have been ongoing for weeks and the €8 billion support package does not come without strings, as Macron has made it clear they are expected to do more domestically. It was not immediately unclear if the support plan has specific conditions in terms of moving production back to France, although Renault will reportedly build electric motors at a plant in Normandy rather than in Asia, as previously planned, in order to access state aid. Renault will also lend its weight to the Battery Alliance, a pan-European industrial push to boost battery production and increase supply in check with growing demand for electric vehicles. Macron’s €8bn scheme is also aimed at consumers, who will be able to benefit from new and improved subsidy schemes worth around €1bn. For electric cars, the current premium of €6,000 for private citizens will increase to €7,000, while plug-in hybrids will be worth €2,000."   https://www.euractiv.com/section/electric-cars/news/macron-demands-carmakers-turn-to-made-in-france-for-e8bn-virus-aid/   RECORD €60BN INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIC CARS AND BATTERIES IN EUROPE SECURED LAST YEAR Europe secured €60 billion in investments to produce electric vehicles and batteries last year – 19 times more than in 2018, new analysis shows. Driven by EU car CO2 targets, industry and governments committed 3.5 times more into EV and battery production in Europe than they did in China, according to T&E’s report. Germany got the biggest chunk, €40 billion, coming mainly from the Volkswagen Group, and Tesla which announced a plant in Berlin. The Czech Republic received €6.6 billion, also thanks to VW, which plans to produce 75 all-electric models worldwide by 2029. Italy secured €1.75 billion in EV investments last year from Fiat, while France, Sweden and the UK each got around €1 billion from car manufacturers. Spain received close to €300 million from Opel, and Croatia got €80 million from Hyundai and Kia.   BYD BLADE PRISMATIC BATTERY CELL SPECS AND POSSIBILITIES "Simpler battery packs made with fewer and larger battery cells weren’t possible with compromised platforms like MQB, however in skateboard platforms like MEB – specially made for electric cars -, they are not only possible, they are what makes sense. Only in late 2016, high energy density battery cells started to be available in pouch format, like the LGX E63 made by LG Chem." says PushEVs: "In 2020, assembling big battery packs with tiny cells doesn’t make sense and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla announces a battery pack made with cobalt-free prismatic battery cells in “battery day”. This would be great, not only for Tesla, but also for electric bicycle manufacturers who would benefit from an immediate increase of cylindrical cells available on the market.  BYD Blade Battery is a module-less CTP (cell-to-pack) battery pack. Without modules, the long prismatic battery cells connected in series are put in an array and then inserted into a battery pack, making it as simple as possible. The simplicity of the CTP technology helps to achieve a good energy density at the battery pack level, even if the energy density of the cells isn’t amazing."   https://pushevs.com/2020/05/26/byd-blade-prismatic-battery-cell-specs-possibilities/   RENAULT CAPTUR PLUG-IN HYBRID SPEC REVEALED Renault UK has confirmed full specifications of new E-TECH version of the two all-new Renault Captur Plug-in Hybrid. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 8th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MODEL 3 IN EUROPE – GROWING PAINS, FIRST DELIVERY Simon at Teslarati kicks us off with an Elon tweet about the logistics challenges of unloading thousands of TEsla's from a ship in Belgium and getting them to customers: "The arrival of the cargo ship Glovis Captain on the port of Zeebrugge earlier this week heralded new opportunities and challenges for electric car maker Tesla. The massive vessel is estimated to be carrying around 3,000 Model 3, which are expected to start an electric disruption in Europe’s passenger car market. At the same time, the arrival of the highly-anticipated sedan also means that deliveries to reservation holders in the region are about to begin. Soon, social media posts from the Tesla community revealed that the first Model 3 deliveries in Europe were already underway. That said, it did not take long before Tesla became unable to deliver as many vehicles as they estimated." On Wednesday, Elon Musk took to Twitter to apologize for the delivery delay in Europe." elonmusk: "Sorry, many unexpected challenges with cars coming through Zeebrugge first time. Cars will start moving out in volume tomorrow." Look, it's a three year wait, another day is fine. People just like to have a moan online because they got bumped by a day. Also this was a self-made problem. Tesla brought forward the delivery dates, some by quite a way, and then had to delay by a day causing disappointment. In on a way Tesla could and we love them for it.   Meanwhile Kyle Field at CleanTechnica was one of the first to pick up on a Tweet from the first owner to get his car: "The first European customer has taken delivery of his Tesla Model 3 today after what felt like an endless stream of delays since it was first announced nearly 3 years ago. Fred is from Oldenzaal in the Netherlands and has been a long-time supporter of Tesla, even going so far as to travel to the Tesla “mothership” at its automotive factory in Fremont, California, to lobby for the Netherlands. Opening up its higher end configurations of the Tesla Model 3 to European and Chinese customers allows the company to continue building higher margin vehicles as it puts the finishing touches on the Standard Range vehicle."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-logistical-challenges-europe-deliveries/   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/07/the-first-european-customer-takes-delivery-of-a-tesla-model-3/   GM ELECTRIC VEHICLES COULD BE PROFITABLE EARLY NEXT DECADE, SAYS CEO "Incentives, credits, and compliance schemes can only get the electric vehicle market so far. The real test of its success will be when large, established automakers can get to a point when they can call them profitable." says Green Car Reprts: "On Wednesday, on a call with analysts to discuss the company’s fourth-quarter 2018 financial results, GM CEO Mary Barra said that’s a distinction could come in the early 2020s.Barra reiterated yesterday that GM believes in an all-EV future, and noted that the company is being repositioned “from one that was trying to be all things to all people in all markets to a very strategic, agile, and profitable company.”"   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121379_gm-electric-vehicles-could-be-profitable-early-next-decade-says-ceo   ARCIMOTO STARTS TAKING ORDERS FOR ITS THREE-WHEELED EV "Arcimoto has started taking orders for its three-wheeled electric vehicle. The Fun Utility Vehicle (FUV) Evergreen Edition will set you back $19,900 before tax credits and rebates, which is a far cry from Arcimoto's target of $11,900, though it aims to push down the price over time." reports Engadget: "Arcimoto plans to deliver 100 Evergreens by the end of June in Oregon, California and Washington. It will later expand delivery to other states, and hopes to fulfill all US pre-orders (more than 3,000 of them) by the end of June next year. It's requiring a non-refundable $5,000 deposit from anyone who orders one now. The Evergreen offers a 75 mph top speed and a range of 100 miles of city driving on a single charge"   https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/07/arcimoto-fuv-evergreen-edition-orders-open/   KIA NIRO EV ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SELLS OUT IN UK: NEW DELIVERIES DELAYED "The number of e-Niro allocated to particular markets is limited while deliveries could be significantly delayed, according to the latest news In the UK, for example, the initial batch of 900 e-Niro was ordered within several weeks and customers probably will need to wait until the end of the year to order some from another batch (probably for delivery in 2020)." accrding to Mark Kane for InsideEVs. AutoExpress said: "“Deliveries for the new Kia e-Niro were supposed to commence in April. However, as a result of the e-Niro’s popularity and the production bottleneck, buyers who managed to snag one of the initial 900-model run may have to wait until the end of 2019 before taking delivery. John Hargreaves, Kia’s head of fleet and remarketing, said the battery pack supply chain issue is likely to remain “a restraining factor for at least another 12 to 18 months.”"   https://insideevs.com/kia-niro-ev-e-niro-sold-out-uk/   KIA STUDY REVEALS FLEETS READY FOR EV TIPPING POINT Meanwhile, and you really couldn't make this up: "Demand for electric vehicles is reaching a tipping point for fleets, according to a new study by Kia. Furthermore, it seems as if public perspectives are also having a huge impact on fleet decisions, with 71 per cent of respondents saying that their organisation is nervous about purchasing a petrol or diesel car that isn’t EV/PHEV up five percent from the previous report."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/kia-study-reveals-fleets-ready-for-ev-tipping-point/   DRIVENOW TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR SHARING FLEET "Car sharing firm Drivenow has announced that 130 new BMW i3 electric vehicles (EVs) will be joining its London fleet. The company, owned by BMW Group, says the new i3s will join 50 older examples of the model until the latter are phased out in April." according to Business Car: "Drivenow says its aim is to have a fleet that is 80% electric by 2025. The new i3s - which offer a 160-mile driving range between charges - will take the company's total current fleet to 720 vehicles, operating in nine London boroughs: Barnet, Brent, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Westminster. "   https://www.businesscar.co.uk/news/2019/wc-feb-4/drivenow-to-boost-electric-car-sharing-fleet   BMW 530E TOURING WAGON PLUG-IN HYBRID SPIED First up from InsideEVs a PHEV story: "BMW is working on a plug-in hybrid version of the 5-series Touring – the prototype was spotted during winter test runs. The lack of camouflage suggests that the market launch is close. It’s a smart move for the German manufacturer, as BMW 530e iPerformance is already the best-selling plug-in hybrid model for the brand."   https://insideevs.com/bmw-530e-touring-phev-spied/   BMW I7 ELECTRIC WITH RANGE OF NEARLY 400 MILES IN THE WORKS And also: "One of the new all-electric models in BMW‘s pipeline is the BMW i7. That’s according to BMWBlog’s sources in Munich. There is no official announcement about the i7. However, at least the trademarks from i1 up to i9 were registered in 2012 and then renewed in 2018. It’s expected that the i7 could be an all-electric version of the next generation 7-Series. Furthermore, it’s believed that it will get an electric range of up to 600 km (373 miles)."     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   "Which incentives, beside those already available where you live, do want to see implemented by auto makers or dealers to help promote EVs?"   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 178 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Welcome new Patreon members!   DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BARD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS HOFFMANN (PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (PRODUCER)   WHAT DOES MEAN BY "ELECTRIFYING THE F-150" "Ford Motor Co. confirmed plans to build a fully electric F-Series pickup, which industry observers called an unexpected move that protects the truck franchise against Tesla and other competitors." claims the Detroit Free Press. They have a quote from Jim Farley, Ford President of Global Markets: "“We’re going to be electrifying the F-Series — battery electric and hybrid." "Farley said a move toward all-electric and hybrid would “futureproof” the billion-dollar F-Series franchise, which he called a “global juggernaut.” An all-electric strategy is a big part of plans outlined by Volkswagen this week during the North American International Auto Show. In discussions about a commercial truck and medium size pickup alliance, Ford and VW said talks continue on collaboration involving electric and driverless vehicles." Just to show you the size of the business, Farley continues; "Ninety-percent of our capital now is allocated toward trucks and utilities,” Farley said. “We have the F-Series, the world and America’s best-selling truck. More than a million units were sold last year. F-Series core strength at the end of the day is: There’s a truck for every customer and we know those customers really, really well. From the F-150 all the way to the F-750. They all matter to us. The best is going to get even better. We’re going to be launching a new Super Duty later this year and showing it to everyone in a few weeks.”   https://eu.freep.com/story/money/cars/2019/01/16/ford-f-150-electric-pickup-truck/2595515002/   TESLA REFERRAL PROGRAM TO END SOON "Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced via Twitter, that the infamous (or famed depending on your interests and situation) Tesla Referral Program will come to an abrupt end. This is not to say that there won’t be some re-initiation and/or adaption of the program down the road, but for now, it will completely disappear." according to Steven Loveday at InsideEVs.com "Let’s continue to keep in mind that as of the time of this writing, Tesla hasn’t officially announced this. Musk has been known to tweet official details that are then later changed. However, generally, his tweets are most often a precursor to an official announcement from the company." As for Elon's tweet he said: "The Tesla customer referral program will end on Feb 1. If you want to refer a friend to buy a Tesla & give them 6 months of free Supercharging, please do so before then." It’s also worth saying that those YouTubers out there who got 105 referrals got TWO free Roadsters. They effectively got a half a million dollar prize. That’s 20 people who get two roadsters, and another 60 people who get one Roadster. I must admit, one of the reasons I’ve never used someone elses, I always felt a bit grubby hearing those people flog their code. It was like they became salesmen for Tesla, and it affects impartiality. They say that they sold X many cars for Tesla but really, those buyers would have bought a car anyway wouldn’t they? So I’m a little pleased its over. So why now? Elon says it makes the Model 3 more expensive.   https://insideevs.com/tesa-referal-program-end-base-model-3-comes/   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC DELIVERIES NOW UNDERWAY IN CANADA And staying with InsideEVs: "Deliveries of Hyundai Kona Electric in Canada kicked off the other day. The first unit was sold by Hyundai Valleyfield in Quebec on January 15, 2019. The Kona Electric went to a couple, who turn out to be loyal customers for the brand for the past 25 years." The Kona, as all EVs, are supply constrained. That is, they could sell more but they can't make enough. And although I can't recall an official Hyundai comment on this, I'll stick my neck out and say it's because of battery supply as opposed to them not having the will to make them.   https://insideevs.com/hyundai-kona-electric-deliveries-now-underway-in-canada-video/amp/   TESLA SEMI TEST DRIVE EVENT The Semi has been the quietest part of Tesla recently. We've recently heard more about the solar tiles and the Powerwall from official channels than the Semi. But now a test drive event for reservation holders shows that work is progressing and Teslas are keen for people to experience it. "On Wednesday, truck leasing company TCI Transportation shared a post on its official Twitter account. The company noted that they were visited by the Tesla Semi, and that some of its employees were even given test drives on the vehicle. Images from the event show TCI’s employees inspecting the all-electric long-hauler, and everyone in the event sharing a meal together." reports Simon at Teslarati: "Not long after the vehicle was unveiled, the Semi had been spotted doing cargo runs or running routes across the United States — and it has not really stopped since. Even the matte black Semi prototype, which was recently wrapped in a stunning red color, has been spotted several times testing on America’s roads."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-construction-shanghai-china-drone-footage-video/   AFC ENERGY UNVEILS MOBILE HYDROGEN FUEL CELL SYSTEM A story sent to me by Owen Morgan on Facebook. This next story is like a who's who of current buzzwords. EVs, hydrogen, grid management. "A new electric vehicle (EV) charging system which enables plug-in vehicles to rapidly power up in around an hour without the need for a power grid connection has been launched today by UK fuel cell specialist AFC Energy." says Business Green: "But by utilising hydrogen fuel cell technology and a battery to generate and store energy, AFC Energy claims the system can charge up EVs off grid and thereby ease pressure on the grid." Adam Bond, CEO at AFC Energy told Business Green: "By 2030, it is estimated that there could be nine million electric vehicles on the roads of Britain, up from 90,000 today. For this transition, we need charging stations to be embedded throughout the country, as well as seeking innovative solutions to overcome the severe limitations of centrally generated electricity." The persistent question is always: how is that hydrogen made? If it's will fossil fuel, there's little point in doing it. Hydrogen is also currently very costly, in early stages and lacks scale. In its favour is energy density, that doing this at industrial scale and then powering EV's makes more sense, plus using excess renewable power to make the Hydrogen is seen as the holy grail.   https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3069470/off-grid-ev-charging-afc-energy-unveils-mobile-hydrogen-fuel-cell-system   NEVS, THE COMPANY THAT TOOK OVER SAAB, GETS NEW MAJORITY OWNER "Chinese real estate conglomerate Evergrande Group, a key investor behind troubled electric vehicle startup Faraday Future, has acquired a 51 percent stake in NEVS. That's the Chinese-backed Swedish electric vehicle company that purchased the assets of Saab out of bankruptcy in 2012." reports Autoblog today: "The investment by subsidiary Evergrande Health Industry Group was valued at the equivalent of $930 million and is expected to help NEVS develop new EVs. Evergrande said it paid the first installment of $430 million on Jan. 15, with the remainder due by the end of the month."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/01/16/nevs-saab-new-majority-owner/   EVS CLEANER THAN PETROL OR DIESEL CARS Big props to Autoexpress magazine for putting this story front and center of their website: ""Electric vehicles (EVs) are better for the environment than internal combustion engine (ICE) models even when charged up with electricity generated by coal-fired power stations, according to new research." says AutoExpress: "Data from BloombergNEF (BNEF) shows CO2 emissions from EVs were about 40 per cent lower than those from ICE models in 2018. Furthermore, the UK saw the biggest difference in emissions between the two categories of car due to its large renewable energy industry. Even in countries like China, which are more reliant on coal-fired electricity, EVs were still found to be cleaner than ICE cars from the points of view of CO2 emissions. The research helps clarify some of the details surrounding the lifetime emissions of EVs, which don’t pollute on the road but do consume electricity that’s often generated by fossil fuels."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/105715/evs-cleaner-than-petrol-or-diesel-cars-even-when-the-electricity-comes-from-coal   HAINAN PROVINCE TO BAN SALES OF DIESEL, PETROL CARS FROM MAR 1 "Hainan province will ban sales of diesel or petrol cars from March 1 when new air pollution measures and laws take effect. Hainan, the smallest province in China, is the first province to implement such a ban." reports Shanghai Metals Market: With hestening the construction of charging facilities, the province would step up its efforts in promoting new-energy vehicles and aims to eliminate diesel or petrol cars by 2030. A low rate of car ownership and the warm climate will support NEV growth. The number of vehicles in Hainan stood at 1 million units as of the end of 2017, compared to 27.23 million units in Guangdong."   https://news.metal.com/newscontent/100869042/hainan-province-to-ban-sales-of-diesel-petrol-cars-from-mar-1/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Saturday 22nd September edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   FCC RELEASES PICTURE OF MODEL 3 KEY FOB From not being in America, all i can say is the FCC seems to be a really good place for leaks. When I used to follow mobile phones much more closely, there always seemed to be stories because the FCC published something. So thank you FCC. Fred at Electrek says; "Some owners have been complaining of occasional issues of using the app, which relies on their phone’s Bluetooth connection. When Tesla applied for a new key fob using a BLE frequency with the FCC, we speculated that Tesla was introducing the device for Model 3. The documents were confidential until today and now we can confirm that the key fob is for Model 3" It's very similar to the Model S and X fobs, so kinda chunky, and with buttons for doors, frunk and trunk. I'm not clear on whether it will ship as standard or be a paid extra, for many owners the mobile method has worked just fine.   https://electrek.co/2018/09/20/tesla-model-3-key-fob-images/                         LARGE DELIVERY OF MODEL 3’S From InsideEvs.com: "A trusted source that works at Tesla and requested to remain anonymous contacted InsideEVs with some inside information. Makes sense right? Anyhow, they shared that Tesla Service Center techs are being pulled from their usual duties over the next week or so to help with deliveries. Apparently, Tesla has readied some 7,000 Model 3 vehicles to be delivered just in the San Francisco Bay Area over the course of seven days. We hear that the specific goal is for the automaker to deliver 1,000 Model 3s each day for the last week of the month in the Bay Area alone."   POLESTAR UNVEILS FIRST PRODUCTION EV WITH AIM TO OVERTAKE TESLA "Polestar debuted its first production EV and previewed its electric car line in New York with the CEO squarely taking aim at Tesla." reports Jake Bright for TechCrunch. The Polestar 1 isn't cheap at $155,000 but you do get both batteries and a fossil for performance. There are three motors powered by twin 34kWh battery packs and that's before you stick gas in. With a range of 100 miles you won’t NEED the fossil unless you want it to gun the car all day. I can't think of a hybrid which has a range of more than 100 miles, that better than most first gen BEVs. “Polestar 2 will be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3…” CEO Thomas Ingenlath said on the launch stage. He told TechCrunch the company will focus more on creating converts to EVs than pulling away Tesla’s existing market share. "There are many people out there who still think a car has to have a combustion engine. Polestar 1 is an extremely good vehicle to get people across that line and once they drive it…understand what an amazing experience an electric car is." "While Polestar’s HQ is in Gothenburg, Sweden, it will manufacture cars at a plant in Chengdu China."   https://techcrunch.com/2018/09/21/polestar-unveils-first-production-ev-with-aim-to-overtake-tesla/   TESLARATI HAS NEW SEMI VIDEO "The Semi has since been sighted in multiple states across the US, and during the company’s Q2 2018 earnings call, Jerome Guillen, the former head of Tesla’s truck programs who is now serving as the company’s President of Automotive, pointed out that the vehicle had already been improved since it was initially unveiled. The exact nature of these improvements remains to be seen, but if a video of the Semi captured earlier this month is any indication, it appears that the electric long-hauler has gotten even more daunting and impressive when it performs a full-speed acceleration run." [audio] Simon at Teslarati says: "The Semi’s performance, handling, and power were specifically pointed out by professional driver Emile Bouret, a close friend of Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, in an Instagram post earlier this month."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-trailer-acceleration-spaceship-new-sighting/   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtwP-aDUtWk   RENAULT UNVEILS SMART ISLAND ON BELLE-ÎLE-EN-MER Renault say they're delighted to unveil a brand new joint project known as FlexMob’île. The aim of this smart electric ecosystem is to facilitate the energy transition on the French island of Belle-Île-en-Mer which lies off the coast of southern Brittany. This initiative follows in the footsteps of the innovative Smart Fossil Free Island programme which has been operational since last February on the Portuguese island of Porto Santo in the Madeira archipelago. For the next 24 months, Groupe Renault and its public and private partners will be developing a smart electric ecosystem that has been conceived to reduce the island’s carbon footprint and increase its energy independence. From 2019, Belle-Île-en-Mer residents and visitors to the island will have access to a fleet of electric cars by means of a self-service hire programme featuring Renault ZOE and Kangoo Z.E. These vehicles will be powered thanks to a network of charging stations located close to the island’s main attractions. This new carsharing service will take advantage of surplus energy produced by solar panels installed on the roofs of the island’s main public buildings. For instance, solar panels on the school’s rooftop provide heat and lighting for classrooms during the week, while the energy produced at weekends or during school holidays will be used to charge the cars. Groupe Renault plans to provide second-life electric car batteries for the island’s largest holiday residences facility. These batteries will be used to store energy produced during the day by solar panels for use in the evening, chiefly to heat the bungalows. This should allow the centre to extend its season which until now has been restricted by central heating costs.   http://www.press.renault.co.uk   A TRIP TO HOSPITAL IN AN EV? "The EV revolution may be starting to gain ground on the retail market, but emergency service vehicles such as ambulances should switch to electric or hybrid propulsion, according to the UK’s leading public health body." reports AutoExpress.co.uk: "The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published draft guidance recommending public-sector organisations “should make low vehicle emissions one of the key criteria when making routine procurement decisions. This could include selecting low-emission vehicles, including electric vehicles.” "   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/104719/emergency-vehicles-could-go-electric-and-autonomous   TESLA SIGNS THREE YEAR DEAL WITH GANFENG FOR LITHIUM "China’s top producer of lithium, a metal used in electric-vehicle batteries, said it’s agreed a deal with Tesla Inc. to supply a fifth of its production to the vehicle maker, highlighting the push for supply pacts." according to Bloomberg: "Tesla will designate its battery suppliers to buy lithium-hydroxide products from Ganfeng Lithium Co. and its unit, the Jiangxi-based company said in a filing to the Shenzhen exchange on Friday. The agreement runs from 2018 to 2020 and could be extended by three years, Ganfeng said." "Earlier this week, Ganfeng announced an agreement to supply LG Chem between 2019-2025 under a supplementary contract, according to a separate filing. Tesla may need as much as 28,000 tons of lithium hydroxide a year from late next year based on battery output at its Nevada facility reaching the equivalent of 35 gigawatt hours, according to Benchmark Mineral’s forecasts."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-09-21/chinese-lithium-giant-agrees-three-year-pact-to-supply-tesla       COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. 08 July 2018 | Has The 60kWh LEAF Been Outed, Model 3 Could Be Future-proofed For Faster Charge Rates Another EV Myth BUSTED

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 8th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   SWISS CHARGERS BY EVTEC PLUGGED INTO 60KWH NISSAN LEAF   EVTEC (@EVTECfastcharge) - First attempt successful: The #NISSAN LEAF charges with 102 kW. #EVTEC #CHAdeMO #Fastcharging #Electromobility   So it looks like what we talked about yesterday was true, a fast charging rate of 102 kW at the SoC (State-of-Charge) of 32 %. So that would be almost certain that it's the new Nissan LEAF unless they've worked out a way to charge the current 40Kwh battery at twice the speed it's rated at. And considering some owners of the new LEAF are getting 20-30kW on their second rapid charge due to temps, it would be surprising if this wasn't the 2019 model year LEAF. So a recap on the leaked specs, and none of this is official yet. 160kW motor will replace the current 110kW motor. 0-60mph or 0-100kmh will be between 6-7 seconds. The battery capacity will be 64kWh with 60kWh usable. And that should give you a range at least 225 miles, which the Thermal Management System will help with as well as helping with charge rates. The DC Fast Charger will be rated at 100kW and if it's in line with others you’ll be charging at 11kW at home. However, and here it comes, the price is one of the best things about the Nissan LEAF, and it won't be cheap. My prediction is £30,000 before any incentives, that's 34,000 Euro, $52,000 CAD or $40,000 USD.   @philroberts - That looks like a rebranded Delta Ultra charger that we offer, looks strange though as can’t see the Chademo holder in the centre and those units I’m pretty sure are only rated for 62.5kW at the moment on Chademo, I’ll ask the question. To be clear it will do 150kW on CCS just not sure it will do that on Chademo as the specs say 125A @500v (62.5kW) although I know the new Chademo spec is out for upto 400kW. That unit is 300A capable but think that’s only for two chargers at same time eg CCS & Chademo together.   WILL TESLA MODEL 3 DOUBLE THE SPEED OF MODEL S? "There’s a very interesting thread going on right now over at Tesla Motors Club Forum. It’s along the same lines as a recent article InsideEVs published about Model 3 Supercharging rates" reports George Bower: "based on a Tesla EPA document it looks like the Model 3 could be capable of a maximum charging current of 525 amps. as TMC member Zoomit points out, 116 kW is basically the limit of Gen 2 Superchargers. Perhaps we are seeing a charger limit and not a car limit. Maybe the Model 3 is actually capable of charging at HIGHER than 116 kW. If the Tesla Model 3 could hold this charge rate to 50% state of charge, it would imply 180 kW of charging power."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-shipping-model-3-with-2x-model-s-p100d-supercharging-c-rate/   TESLA OFFERS MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES FOR FIRST TIME Tesla started offering test drives of the Model 3 at four Bay Area locations: Dublin-Amador Plaza, Corte Madera, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Yesterday Tesla stareted offering Model 3 test drives at four more locations in the region: San Jose, Burlingame, San Francisco and Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. "The test drives are offered to people who have put down $1,000 deposits on the Model 3. A Tesla staffer will accompany drivers." says The Mercury News.   NEXT PEUGEOT 208 GTI TO GO ELECTRIC? Here's a story I first saw in AutoExpress and now it's in Evo.co.uk where Jordan Katsianis says: "The next Peugeot 208 GTi is likely to feature a pure electric drivetrain when it arrives in showrooms next year. As for the next 208 GTi, while the electric version may not immediately strike us as ideal hot hatch material, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t curious about what an all-electric Peugeot GTi might be like to drive."   UK EV SALES EXCEED 6,000 IN LAST MONTH Here in the UK it's still Plug In Hybrids which are surging ahead of pure BEVs. 1,519 BEVs (up 4% year-over-year) 4,753 PHEVs (up 54% year-over-year) Diesel sales were down -30% in the first half of the year   SEE VOLKSWAGEN'S I.D. R PIKES PEAK RUN FROM A HELICOPTER "This year Volkswagen took its all-electric I.D. R to Pikes Peak and took home the overall record. With Romain Dumas behind the wheel of this 671-hp all-electric race car, the VW managed to run the 12.42-mile circuit in only seven minutes and 57.148 seconds, which was 16 seconds faster than Sebastien Loeb’s 2013 record" according to Autoweek.com: "If you wanted to see what that run looked like, here’s your chance to take a bird’s-eye view. While this isn’t as mind-bending as watching Porsche’s 919 Evo shave a minute off the Nurburgring record, watching Dumas conquer Pikes Peak with only the whirr of electric motors is definitely a different experience."   RELAX, YOUR ELECTRIC CAR WON’T SHORT-CIRCUIT YOUR PACEMAKER This will make you smile. You know we were talking about EV myths, here's one i hadn't heard. "Thanks to a recent study by German scientists, one other question appears to have been answered: Electric cars, they found, won’t interfere with a person’s pacemaker" says UF Health Podcasts: "The team found the electromagnetic strength was highest when the cars were being charged, but there was no pacemaker inhibition, no shocks and no devices needed to be reprogrammed. Electric cars are equipped with shielding to prevent electromagnetic interference with on-board computer systems, which the researchers said could explain the low electromagnetic strength inside the cars. This shielding may also be what protected the heart devices from any interference."     COMMUNITY   @SveinMedhus - Not a single #BEV spoted in Mallorca this week, not even at this charger at Lluc.  We have seen one real donkey and plenty of diesel-donkeys. Our donkey driver did not believe in the new 500 chargers to be paid by the ecotax by 2020 as reported by @EVNewsDaily . I miss #Norway

It’s Saturday 2nd June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   FIAT CHRYSLER'S PLAN FOR ELECTRIFICATION We have to start today with a new five year plan from Fiat Chrysler Automotive - FCA - and the parting shot of Sergio Marchionne before he hands over the reins. The plans were presented at a grand event in Balocco, in Italy, where the CEO had plans for a midsize Ram pickup, but an uncertain future for Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat. But what care about is electrification, and you can expect new models from Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo and Maserati. "Fiat Chrysler will phase out production of all diesel passenger cars in Europe by 2021, Marchionne said. The company sees the engine technology as increasingly challenged by both regulation and consumer attitudes, and of declining importance" according to Automotive News: "Fiat plans a full electric lineup around the 500 family. He said the company expects full utilization of Italian plants by 2022." "Maserati plans to add 32 dealerships in North America by 2022, and will aim squarely at Tesla with a new high-performance plug-in electric hybrid sport coupe based on the Alfieri concept, new brand head Tim Kuniskis said. The all-wheel-drive EV will come in a droptop model as well and will feature an aluminium frame for weight savings, with a top speed above 186 mph." "Buyers will be offered a choice of three Ferrari-developed powertrains – including an all-electric version capable of 0-62mph in around two seconds" reports AutoExpress: " diesel engines will be eliminated from Maserati’s product range and replaced by ‘Maserati Blue’ - an electrified sub-brand initially spanning four models. It will allow Maserati to target electric pioneers like Porsche and Tesla with a range of cutting-edge battery electric vehicles. All future powertrains will be engineered and supplied by Ferrari – including those for electric vehicles." The plans do sound rather vague at this stage, a bit of a moving target: "Maserati Blue will comprise of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions of the Alfieri, all-new Quattroporte saloon and next-generation Levante SUV. Each electric version will use three electric motors and torque vectoring to deliver four-wheel drive. Maserati says they will offer “long range” and “quick charge times” - though no specifics have been announced." Meanwhile GreenCarReports were more interested in an electric Jeep: "The Jeep Grand Commander will arrive in 2021 with an all-electric powertrain, By 2022, Fiat Chrysler will offer three new all-electric Jeeps and six plug-in hybrids. While the plug-in hybrids may come to the U.S., it's not clear that electric Jeeps will be roaming Los Angeles freeways any time soon. Marchionne noted that low gas prices in North America make for longer pay-back periods for electrified vehicles. That implies that FCAs new plug-in vehicle options will be slower to arrive in the U.S. than in other markets such as Europe and China. A plug-in hybrid version of the Renegade will go on sale in 2020 and a mild hybrid in 2021. The company also confirmed a plug-in hybrid version of the new Wrangler midway through 2020, in addition to the e-Torque mild-hybrid version due out later this year." Timothy Kuniskis, Head of Maserati and Alfa, says: "it becomes increasingly clear that electrified powertrains are expected in the luxury market." FCA's 2022 electric strategy for Europe, where heavy fines are in order if they exceed CO2 limits, 20% PHEV or BEV, 40% mild hybrid and 40% non-electrified.   FCA electric timetable: 2018: Mild hybrid RAM 1500 2020: Mild hybrid Fiat 500, Phev Jeep Renegade and Wrangler, Hybrid Jeep Grand Cherokee, BEV Fiat 500e, BEV Maserati Alfieri 2021: Mild hybrid Jeep Renegade, Phev Maserati Alfieri, BEV Jeep Grand Commander FCA investing $9bn in electrification. And the Fiat brand isn't dead, the brand's future lies as an electric city car brand, says Sergio.   MAY EV SALES Into a new month which means we can start to check out the newly updated, and may I say rather fancypants, look of the InsideEVs monthly sales scorecard. All joking aside their scorecard is now easier to read, and chart the winners and losers each month. And from now on we'll be saying the same thing every month, the Model 3 is sitting at the top of the charts and will be for some time. Their estimate for Model 3 sales is...6,250 in May. We never know until Tesla announce the numbers but the Model S is estimated at 1,520 and the Model X at 1,450. And if you were thinking what all that adds up to - 9,220 cars estimated sold by Tesla in May. Nissan LEAFsales for the month of May hit 1,576 units. That’s the highest LEAF sales have been in a single month since December 2016. They estimate for the month of May, 1,125 Chevy Bolt EVs and 1,675 Volts. The Top 5 Tesla Model 3* Toyota Prius Prime Tesla Model S* Tesla Model X* Chevrolet Bolt EV*   https://insideevs.com/may-2018-plug-in-electric-vehicle-sales-report-card/   MODEL 3 TEARDOWN CLAIMS LOW COST OF PRODUCTION A company in Germany has completed a teardown of the Tesla Model 3 and claim to have worked out a cost for labor, parts and logistics. The raw costs are put at $18,000 and the labor costs a conveniently round number - $10,000. One of the test engineers said: "If Tesla manages to build the planned 10,000 units a week, the Model 3 will deliver a significant positive contribution to earnings" Fred at Electrek concluded: "The analysis would point to Tesla almost hitting a 25% margin on a standard $35,000 Model 3 without any upgrades once they hit 10,000 units per week. I doubt that it will be the case, but I would love to be wrong on this because many people in the auto industry are still hoping for the Model 3 to be unprofitable to show that you can’t mass produce long-range electric vehicles yet."   And then it took to Twitter... Fred Lambert "-You agree that the cost could go down to ~$28,000 on average at 10k units/week?" @elonmusk - "Definitely"   CALIFORNIA APPROVES $768 MILLION FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES In news which may have gone under the radar, i wanted to highlight this as it's a seismic level of investment. "California’s electric utility companies will spend nearly $768 million on charging infrastructure for electric cars, trucks and buses, under a series of proposals approved Thursday by state regulators." says the San Francisco Chronicle: "The programs, viewed together, are believed to be the largest state-level effort yet by the utility industry to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. Gov. Jerry Brown has set a goal of having 5 million zero-emission vehicles on California roads by 2030, a steep jump from the 369,300 pure electrics and plug-in hybrids now registered in the state." There will be a "focus on creating the infrastructure to support charging stations particularly for electric trucks and buses, in contrast to previous expenditures, which have focused more on cars."   https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/Energy-revolution-California-approves-massive-12957685.php?utm_campaign=twitter-premium&utm_source=CMS%20Sharing%20Button&utm_medium=social   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. It’s Thursday 31st May 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   TESLA MODEL 3 WINS CONSUMER REPORTS BLESSING AFTER BRAKE FIX Getting a B+ in a school test is not the end of the world, but what if your teacher allowed you to come back a week later and fix up that one question you got wrong, and give you an A+ with flying colours? That's pretty much the last week in the world of Consumer Reports and Tesla. They say: "Consumer Reports now recommends the Tesla Model 3, after our testers found a recent over-the-air update improved the car's braking distance by nearly 20 feet. In an email to CR, a Tesla spokeswoman said that the company improved the software for the Model 3's antilock braking system to adapt to variations in how the brakes might be used and to respond to different environmental conditions. The improved braking distances raised the Model 3’s Overall Score enough for the car to be recommended by CR, but our testers had other areas of concern as well. They found issues with the Model 3’s wind noise, stiff ride, and uncomfortable rear seat. Last week, Musk told CR in a conversation that the automaker has already made changes to its production line to address those three issues. One of the most experienced of Tesla writers, Dana Hull, for Bloomberg: "Tesla's Model 3 sedan won a coveted recommendation from Consumer Reports after an over-the-air software update improved braking by almost 20 feet. The new software addressed variations in braking styles and environmental conditions, a company spokeswoman told Consumer Reports. Jake Fisher, director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, described the improvement as unprecedented. “I’ve been at CR for 19 years and tested more than 1,000 cars, and I’ve never seen a car that could improve its track performance with an over-the-air update,” he said in a statement. The updates are being rolled out now. Elon Musk tweeted: "“Improved windshield for aero noise & suspension for ride comfort are major ops. Unless you’re really bothered by them, don’t replace. Best way to improve ride is drop tire pressure to ~39 psi. 45 psi is best range, but lower comfort.” Electrek say: "The hardware update to the suspension has reportedly started rolling out in December and owners can have it retrofitted at a Tesla’s service center."   https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/tesla-model-3-gets-cr-recommendation-after-braking-update/   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-30/tesla-model-3-gets-consumer-reports-endorsement-after-brake-fix   https://electrek.co/2018/05/30/tesla-model-3-stopping-distance-improvements-new-test-ui-ride-comfort-road-noise     AUDI E-TRON EV GETS SIDE CAMERAS INSTEAD OF MIRRORS FOR AERODYNAMICS Wing mirrors are something I would put into the category of solved problems. A bit like sinks - they were a solved problem. Sinks works. Then fancypants hotels started installing sinks like flat slates with funky taps, and the next thing you know, it splashes everywhere and you've wet your crotch. Just me? OK. Now Autoblog says Audi is ditching mirrors for cameras on the forthcoming Audi e-tron Quattro. I presumed it would be one of those concept car things which never made it's way onto the car. "The optional cameras are mounted to little winglets where the standard side mirrors would have been. As for where you see the cameras' views, there will be an additional screen in the area to the left of the instrument cluster for at least the left camera. Audi wasn't totally clear about the screen for the right-hand camera." Back in 2016 Autonews were talking about this issue "cameras capture a wider angle of view and can see blind spots usually invisible with mirrors. They can also improve visibility by digitally compensating for glare, darkness or even rainy weather. The pathway to mirrorless cars was cleared late last year when the United Nations' World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations approved the use of cameras that meet certain specifications in place of mirrors." North America is expected to follow suit later in 2018 in allowing them.   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/30/audi-e-tron-ev-side-cameras-replace-mirrors/   HYUNDAI SET TO ENTER BATTERY BUILDING BUSINESS According to Korean Media, Hyundai could be about to make their own EV batteries in an attempt to ease the bottlenecks which have slowed up sales, and they aim to reduce the dependency on LGChem and SK Innovation. Electrive say: "a Hyundai spokesperson confirmed they were working on battery production lines but denied any plans they would use them for their own electric vehicles."   https://www.electrive.com/2018/05/30/hyundai-to-produce-its-own-electric-car-batteries/   2019 HYUNDAI IONIQ ADDS MORE ACTIVE-SAFETY EQUIPMENT Staying with Hyundai and "The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq range will receive a handful of technology updates for the new model year, with improvements in safety and infotainment. This is the third model year for the Ioniq Electric and Hybrid, though only the second year for the Plug-In Hybrid version." reports CNET. New for 2019: Driver Attention Alert and High Beam Assist safety features now available Enhanced, natural-language, server-based voice-recognition and POI-search database provided by HERE™ Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Smart Cruise Control added to SEL Standard remote charge management for Plug-in and Electric models via Blue Link® "The Ioniq Electric and Plug-In Hybrid will include remote monitoring of battery charging as standard from within the cars' associated Blue Link telematics smartphone apps. The 2019 versions of all three Ioniqs will be in dealerships this summer." But what about the battery range? I can't find anywhere online which says they will upgrade the current 28 kWh battery pack with 124 mile driving range. The move comes despite long-standing speculation in media reports that the Ioniq EV could receive a battery upgrade to boost its range to 200 miles or beyond. I'll post a link to the Hyundai Media Center on the show notes but key paragraphs are: " The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid provides an estimated all-electric range of 29 miles, 119 MPGe in EV mode and 52 MPG in hybrid mode, powered by a potent 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery." and… "The Ioniq Electric has an estimated 136 MPGe rating, the highest efficiency rating of any electric vehicle sold in the U.S. market. The Ioniq Electric offers pure electric mobility with a 28.0 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery for an estimated driving range of 124 miles."   https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/2542   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2019-hyundai-ioniq-adds-equipment/   SIGHTINGS OF FUTURE EVS "Ford's new Kuga SUV, set to arrive in showrooms in 2020, will be available as a plug-in hybrid for the first time." according to AutoExpress who have spy spots of the Plug In Hybrid version testing, in heavy camo, in North America. Although if you're listening to this in North America, this is the Ford Escape. Since the 2013 model year, the European designed Kuga has been rebadged as the Escape, and it's a popular car selling over 300,000 last year. "This new Kuga is still a few years away, however, as evidenced by the substantial camouflage hiding the new car's refreshed design. It’s likely that the next Kuga will share its platform with the new Focus, which has been designed with electrification in mind. As well as allowing Ford to develop petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric cars on the same platform it also means a slight increase in size is on the cards, as hinted at by the longer rear overhang and extended wheel arches of the prototypes." LeftLaneNews say: "Overall this prototype looks nearly identical to the one that was spotted back in April, but there is one major difference — look closely at the front fender and you'll see what looks like a fuel door. But Ford hasn't moved the Escape's gas tank to the front end, what you're looking at is actually a door to conceal a charge port."   http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/ford/kuga/102952/ford-kuga-plug-in-hybrid-caught-on-camera   https://www.leftlanenews.com/spied-2020-ford-escape-plug-in-hybrid-100611.html   NISSAN HOME ENERGY SYSTEM LAUNCHES IN UK Dominik Wilde at Motor 1 has some great news for those in the UK wanting to add solar and storage, for a great price, from Nissan. "The new setup involves solar panels and reused batteries from the company's EVs, allowing homeowners to generate electricity even while they're not in the house and either sell it back to the grid at peak times or use it themselves. The whole thing is managed by a sophisticated computer system to best meet each household's requirements. "Starting from £3,881 – which includes the supply and installation of a six-panel solar system, home energy management system, and VAT at 5 percent – the package also uses battery storage (xStorage Home) as well as the solar panels and energy management to reduce energy bills by up to 66 percent. It also has the ability to charge Nissan EVs." There's a link to the article in the show notes if you want to read more.   https://uk.motor1.com/news/243422/nissan-home-energy-uk/   FOR HIS LAST ACT, MARCHIONNE WILL OUTLINE AN EV/HYBRID ROADMAP THIS WEEK "Fiat Chrysler (FCA) boss Sergio Marchionne is expected to outline new plans for electric and hybrid cars in a strategy presentation on Friday, aiming to ensure the world's seventh-largest carmaker remains in the race in the absence of a merger." is the news from Reuters: "Marchionne had long refused to jump on the electrification bandwagon, saying he would only do so if selling battery-powered cars could be done at a profit. He even urged customers not to buy FCA's Fiat 500e, its only battery-powered model, because he was losing money on each sold."   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/30/fiat-chrysler-sergio-marchionne-ev-electric-hybrid/       I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
