It’s Sunday 10th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. A quickie today as we’re away for the weekend, sadly not at FullyChargedLIVE (don’t tell the person who’s birthday party we’re going to) but I haven’t missed a show yet, so the portable mic is with me. Not as good as good as the studio but I’m coming to you live today from a Premier Inn!   #FullyChargedLIVE Day 2! Good morning if you’re listening to this and you’re going.    This is show 146, next Thursday is 150. I like a round number so if there’s anything you’d like to hear more of or less of, to add or improve, please do tweet @EVNewsDaily or email hello@evnewsdaily.com   MORE DETAILS ON PORSCHE TAYCAN First of all, let's get the pronunciation sorted for the new name of the Porsche Mission E. It's "Tie Con". And now we've heard from the CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Klaus Zellmer: "Our dealers are telling us that they can’t have this car soon enough, You can expect that there will be new faces in our dealerships and current customers adding a new, all-electric Porsche to their garage." "We anticipate roughly half of our vehicles sold by 2025 will be plug-in hybrids or battery electric vehicles," he said. "Which leaves the other half for internal combustion platforms. So, while some things change, others do not, and a Porsche will always be a Porsche." Yesterday on the podcast I was talking to you about why the announcement video for the Taycan used the tagline "Soul, Electrified", and there's more from Mr Zellmer today in line with what i was saying, which is that Porsche will want to head off any criticism than a Porsche which doesn't make roaring noises isn't really a Porsche. "We intend to redefine the high performance e-vehicle segment (with the Taycan)," Zellmer said. "From day one, our approach has been that a Porsche will always be the sports car of its segment, regardless of its powertrain. And our first all-electric sports car will drive like a Porsche and offer the sportiness and everyday usability we are known for." Stat check: 90kWh battery, two motors for all wheel drive, 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds, 800V/350kW charge speeds to add 100km of range every 4 mins.   ASTON MARTIN BOSS WARNS OTHER CEO TO ELECTRIFY OR DIE Andy Palmer at Aston Martin has done an incredible job since he's been in charge turning round the company so that it now faces a bright future and one which is already talking about how and when to electrify. Aston Martin enjoyed a 58percent increase in sales last year and it's first profit since 2010. However he's had a few words of advice (warning?!) for CEO's of other mainstream car makers. He says that as everyday cars become more of a commodity they need to differentiate. "I do believe we are at the beginning of end of the traditional automotive industry," Palmer recently told industry outlet Automotive News Europe. "For a long time, the business model has been stack ’em high and sell ’em cheap." "But profitless volume is no way to build a sustainable company. It makes no sense to spend one billion [euros] on a new car and discount it almost at launch," he said. 'We risk moving toward commoditization of a pod. The world does not need dozens of nameplates making the same objects. There are more than 75 automotive nameplates in Europe, but just four plane makers."   JAGUAR’S I-PACE UNDERCUTS TESLA RIVAL ON PRICE IN CANADA The Jaguar I-PACE has been showing up on my twitter feed a lot today as it's one of the highlights of FullyChargedLIVE, but I've got some price details for our Canadian listeners. The electric SUV will start at $86,500 when it's on sale late Summer. Putting that into perspective the Tesla Model X starts at $110,200. Stat check: dual motors, 0-62mph in 4.5 and one pedal driving with heavy regen gets you 385kms on a tank. Plus 100kW DC fast charging.   POLESTAR FINDS BUYERS IN NORTH AMERICA Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath revealed on Thursday that North America is, in fact, the brand's biggest market, according to a Thursday report from Automotive News. Ingenlath shared the majority of the 500-plus buyers who've made the refundable $2,500 deposit for the hybrid sports coupe are from North America. It will come to the United States to be shown during Monterey Car Week in August. The Polestar 1 will be mostly sold on a subscription basis. Stat check: Hybrid powertrain, 2.0 litre engine with an electric motor on each axle, 93 miles of EV range   NEW OCTOPUS ENERGY TARIFF FOR EV OWNERS "Octopus Energy has launched a new “time of use” energy tariff especially designed for bringing down the charging cost for electric vehicle (EV) owners." wrties Catherine Neilan for CityAM: "The new tariff, called Octopus Energy Go, lets EV owners charge their cars for only 5p per kilowatt hour for four hours each night, which could make owning an EV 10 times cheaper than having a car running on fossil fuels. Other existing initiatives to bring down the power cost for EV owners include the Economy 7 tariff, also known as the differential tariff, which has reduced rates for seven hours per night. However, the Go tariff could be up to 25 per cent cheaper." Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, director of product for Octopus Energy, said: “Octopus is passionate about driving the UK’s switch to electric vehicles. We’re delighted to use our innovative tech both to offer the cheapest kWh charge in the market and enable your car to automatically charge itself, a brilliant way to unlock those electric car savings.”   RYDER ORDERS A LARGE FLEET OF 500 ELECTRIC VANS Ryder has placed an order for 500 electric vans for it's North American EV truck rental and lease fleet. That's on top of 125 vans which are already on order. Dennis Cooke, President of Global Fleet Management Solutions for Ryder, commented on the announcement: “Ryder continues to see broadening interest in EVs from businesses of various sizes and industries, and especially from those companies in the parcel, final mile, or beverage delivery space. Additionally, there’s interest from customers who have daily return to base routes of 40 to 100 miles and in markets with incentives available for electric vehicles. Companies continue to identify the potential long-term cost, environmental, and efficiency benefits of EVs. We’re proud to expand our relationship with Chanje and expect additional business announcements based on our sales pipeline. This latest announcement with Chanje is one more way we are demonstrating our commitment to maximizing the performance of our customers’ fleets, while providing the flexibility and convenience to implement EVs into their operations.”   WHY YOU MAY ONLY NEED TO CHARGE YOUR EV WEEKLY "Consumer perceptions and fears about the driving range of electric cars are often blamed as a major reason for the lack of take-up, but a new report illustrates how those ideas are ill-founded." says RenewEconomy.com.au: "In Australia, the average commuter travels 38km/day, the report shows. According to these figures, the LEAF (once available in Australia) would only have to be charged about once a week. A Tesla S owner on the other hand, would only need to plug in about once every 12 days. (As it turns out, most EV owners would charge them daily in any case, because of the convenience of charging them when parked at home). While charging times for EV drivers on long distance trips may still not be desirable, one thing is clear – range anxiety for those commuting on short distance trips or in the city may no longer be a valid concern."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   #FullyChargedLIVE Day 1! Good morning if you’re listening to this and you’re going. THE FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC PORSCHE: NAME REVEALED I loved the name of the first electric Porsche. The Porsche Mission E. Great...they're in a mission to electrify. But alas that's not the name. The official Porsche YouTube just released a video, not much speech but it sounds like this... ...it ends on the caption Soul, Electrified. "News of Porsche developing its gorgeous Mission E concept into an all-electric sports car lineup has been very exciting, at least up until this point. According to a presentation by the CEO, the production version will unfortunately be called the “Taycan.” says Jalopnic. "The name was announced at Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebrations today by CEO Oliver Blume. According to Reuters, Porsche claims the “Taycan” name means “lively, young horse” and is meant to be a play on the symbolism of Porsche’s coat of arms. It sounds silly, though, doesn’t it?"   TESLA SAYS THE MODEL 3 BODY LINE IS NOW 95% AUTOMATED Electrek has picked out the highlights from Tom Randall at Bloomberg writing about a rare, and frankly surprising, invitation to look around the Model 3 Production lines: "Tesla invited Bloomberg to take a look at the Model 3 production line in Fremont after the most recent production shutdown to add the new line." “Tesla says the Model 3 body line is now 95 percent automated, including the transfer, loading, and welding of parts.” Fred Lambert said: “They also took a look at Tesla’s quality control for the Model 3, which includes 47 robots scanning the Model 3 bodies body line at 1,900 different points to match them to design specs with a precision of 0.15 millimeters". Bloomberg also said about the quality control: “During the final test drives on the track, sound recorders measure squeaks, rattles and wind and road noise that a test driver might miss. All of this data is stored with each car’s unique Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, so service centers can trace any issue back to a root cause in the factory. The idea is that Tesla will be able to improve its cars, even after they’re in a customer’s driveway.”   https://electrek.co/2018/06/08/tesla-model-3-body-line/   ELON MUSK TEASES 'WAY MORE ADVANCED' AUTOPILOT FEATURES Elon Musk tweeted a reply to Ryan McCaffrey, saying: "No plans for aluminum pedals. Adds too much production complexity. Model 3 will def have summon, which will get way more advanced for S & X w HW2 Autopilot & all Model 3 cars." "Tesla is making big changes to Autopilot. On Friday, CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company plans to update its semi-autonomous driving system to bring the “summon” feature to the Tesla Model 3. The update is set to come as part of a broader push to make Tesla’s cars run smoother." according to Inverse.com: "In response to a question from Tesla fan Ryan McCaffrey, Musk wrote on Twitter that he plans to bring “summon” to the company’s newest car, which entered production in July 2017. This feature, already present on the Model S and Model X and introduced in the fall of 2015, enables the car to open a garage, enter, close the door, park and switch off. It can also do the reverse when you need to leave again. Tesla vehicles manufactured after October 2016 use the same setup of cameras, sensors, ultrasonic radar and GPS to enable these features, with an Nvidia Drive PX 2 on board capable of supporting over-the-air software updates."   https://www.inverse.com/article/45722-tesla-model-3-elon-musk-teases-way-more-advanced-autopilot-features   2018 MAY US PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES CHARTED: MARKET UP 48% Mark Kane at InsideEVs has been summarising last months EV sales in the U.S.: "May 2018 became the fourth best month for plug-in electric car sales in the U.S. with healthy growth of 48%." Last month here in the UK we were over 5%, but market share is just 1.5%. "Tesla Model 3 set in May an all-time sales record for any plug-in car in the U.S. – 6,250 (estimated by IEVs)." says Mark.   https://insideevs.com/2018-may-us-plug-in-electric-car-sales-charted-market-up-48/   FISKER TWEETS Henrik Fisker @FiskerOfficial !Looking forward to doing some more testing this weekend on the #FiskerEMotion #SolidState #Batteries #testing #electric #EVs #electricvehicle #Fisker #tech #technology #environment"   CHARGEWAY POSTS FIRST CHARGING SIGNS GreenCarReports has a really interesting article on signage for charge stations: "Charging has been a key obstacle to electric carbuyers, and it may not just be the number of public stations available. With three different "levels" of charging, and multiple charging speeds and connector types within each of those, it can be confusing for the average driver to know what type of chargers their car can use and what will give them the fastest charge their car can handle." says GreenCarReports: "Green indicates a "standard" J1772 connector along with its CCS Combo fast-charge counterpart. (A car with a CCS fast-charge connector takes a standard J1772 plug for slower charges.) Blue is for CHAdeMO DC fast charge connectors. (Cars that have a CHAdeMO fast-charge port also have a separate J1772 port for everyday charges.) Red is only for Teslas, which use their own type of connector.   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1117084_chargeway-posts-first-signs-helping-electric-car-drivers-sort-out-charging-levels   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. It’s Friday 8th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ELECTRIC CAR SWITCH The plans I've talked about on previous podcasts, to switch World Rallycross Championship cars to being electric, has been approved by the governing body the FIA World Motor Sport Council. I first heard of plans for this last year, and then earlier this year invitations were sent out for companies who wish you tender for the supply of the battery and chassis. This is very significant news as it starts from 2020. World Rallycross is a fast-paced, high adrenaline sport for drivers and spectators alike, with the electric cars eligible for both manufacturer teams and privateers. Every constructor will have the same battery and chassis package, which will be open for privateer teams to homologate as well. We now know Williams will provide all the batteries, as they have done to Formula E up to now, with Formula E moving to McLaren for the 2018/19 season. IN fact some of those specs from Formula Ewill be used to derive the regulations which will govern the manufacturers and private teams on the powertrains they design. The stats: two motors, one on each axle, and total power of 500kW.   https://www.autosport.com/wrx/news/136578/world-rx-2020-electric-car-move-approved   KIA NIRO EV REVEALED TO PUBLIC KIA has revealed its all-new Niro EV at the 2018 Busan International Motor Show today in Korea. They are finally showing off to the public what you and I have talked about for a while since we saw the concept at CES plus official pics last month. As Hyundai have done with the Kona they've taken the combustion car and added some batteries. The charge point is in the front grille behind a flappy slidey cover, and the small LED headlights are something we're seeing more from EV designers. Of course no need for air intakes to keep an engine cool makes the front look way better. As we've mentioned the Kona, in the same way the Niro offers a 64kWh lithium-polymer battery for 279 miles of range. However even though they're sister companies, it's not the same battery as it would be fair to assume. In fact more than one EV blog I've read today said they're fitting the same packs - oopsie! Different suppliers and different chemistry. That's not EPA rated yet though so expect something around 240 miles, still better than base spec Model 3. The motor drives the front wheels with 150kW of power and a brisk, without being face-melting, 0-60mph time of 7.8 seconds. That's the same for both battery options. And charging speeds? Yes they're confirmed for 100kW. The smaller pack is 39.2kWh for 186 miles of range. And if you're like me, I always find myself thinking I need the long range, but when you look at the journeys we make, 186 miles is just fine in nearly all cases. Even if that range came down to real world 100 miles you know the price of a Kia will be super competitive. Inside we have some blue accents for snazziness, look out for a 7inch touchscreen with plenty of buttons, this is no Tesla minimalism. There's an included wireless phone charger, plus plenty of safety tech like Forward Collision Warning with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Intelligent Stop & Go, and Lane Following Assist. As for their version of Autopilot, it's Level 2, so you'll stay in lane on the freeway with accelerating, decelerating, braking and steering up to 80mph. Korean sales start soon with prices elsewhere announced later this year - that's as specific as they'll be. With 5,000 domestic orders in Korea I would expect them to either service all of them first, or a at split it 50:50 for Korea vs Rest Of The World.   GM TO SELL HONDA ADVANCED ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES IN NORTH AMERICA Reuters just reported: "General Motors Co will supply advanced batteries to Japan’s Honda Motor Co, the companies said Thursday, a move that could significantly reduce the cost of future electric vehicles at both automakers after 2020. GM and Honda on Thursday said they would “collaborate” on the batteries, with GM supplying cells and modules, mainly for electric vehicles to be sold by both companies in North America. A source familiar with GM’s plans said its current battery cell supplier, Korea’s LG Chem, is expected to provide cells for the new battery, which is mainly a GM design. The new batteries are expected to begin production around 2021, the source said." This looks like the classic win-win. The next gen batteries will be higher energy density than those used in the Bolt and for instance.   DRIVER IN FATAL TESLA AUTOPILOT CRASH DID NOT HAVE HANDS ON WHEEL This is such a horrible story to report on but I want to quickly update you. "The driver of a Tesla who fatally crashed in California in March did not have his hands on the steering wheel at the time of the accident, said a preliminary report from the National Traffic Safety Board on Thursday." according to CNBC.   NEW NISSAN eNV200 CAMPERVAN Nissan's hidden gem is the eNV200, electric van and people carrier which has recently been updated with the 40kWh battery, and thermal management to handle those who use it as a van and rapid charge regularly for business. "Nissan has taken the covers off a new in-house campervan range at the 2018 Madrid Motor Show. The campers, which are currently exclusively for the Spanish market, with an all-electric e-NV200 version included in the line-up." say AutoExpress: "All the campervans offer an extendable roof, which the maker claims allows four people to sit and stand in comfort. They all also come with a double bed, however, the NV300 is the only van to offer sleeping for four, thanks to a second double bed which is made available once the roof is raised. Inside this larger NV300-based model, there’s a fridge, sink, hob and heater to make sure occupants don’t freeze during their fine dining experience." The campervan eNV200 will be popular for those wanting to cut their emissions whilst enjoying the classic campervan roadtrip experience.   DAIMLER TRUCKS NORTH AMERICA UNVEILS TWO ELECTRIC MODELS Daimler press office have been in touch with news that: "Freightliner Trucks premiered two fully electrified commercial vehicles, a Freightliner eCascadia™ heavy-duty truck and a Freightliner eM2 106 medium-duty truck today, during the Daimler Trucks Capital Market and Technology Day here. Freightliner plans to deliver an Electric Innovation Fleet of 30 vehicles to customers later this year for further testing under real-world operating conditions." "The eCascadia has up to 730 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 550 Kwh usable capacity, a range of up to 250 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 200 miles) in about 90 minutes. The Class 8 tractor is designed for local and regional distribution and drayage. The eM2 has up to 480 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 325 Kwh of usable capacity, a range of up to 230 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 184 miles) in about 60 minutes. The eM2 is Freightliner's electrified solution for local distribution, pickup and delivery, food and beverage delivery, and last-mile logistics applications." What did Daimler Trucks chief Martin Daum say? “We are the undisputed global leader of the trucking industry and we intend to remain in that position with electric trucks and buses." Just a reminder on the Tesla Semi range - 500 miles. Which Elon said yesterday was already being improved on for the truck which goes on sale in 2020.   PORSCHE MISSION E CROSS TURISMO As well as the Porsche Mission E, the recently unveiled Cross Turismo version is a more rugged version of the same car. Designed to fit your skis in, in you will. And some of the early test mules have been given to journalists in North America. BMWBlog praised the steering and handling, but also said: "It’s also really, really fast. They weren’t allowed to drive it past 50 mph but Porsche claims it has 600 hp from its dual electric motors and is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and 0-124 mph in 12 seconds. The latter performance figure is actually faster than the Tesla Model S P100D. The biggest trick up the Mission E’s sleeves, though, is the fact that it can charge faster than any other electric car before it. With the capability of 800-volt charging, the Porsche Mission E can 250 miles of range in 15 minutes." More of those chargers will be appearing very soon especially in Europe where several networks are at advanced stage of installing them.   EV CHARGING MAP ALLOWS ROUND AUSTRALIA EV TRIPS "It’s now possible to drive around Australia in an electric car, thanks to a comprehensive EV charging station map. The Tesla Owners Club of Australia (TOCA) released its Round Australia Electric Highway map this month." according to EnergyMatters.com.au "However, the map is not complete. There are still gaps in fast-charging stations and places where three phase is not available. As a result, TOCA and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) are offering help to property owners. TOCA and AEVA will give a 32 amp 3 phase electrical outlet free to any site which will help build the Round Australia and Red Centre routes to distance intervals of 300 km max. The property owner must install it reasonably promptly at an accessible location, and agree to let electric vehicles charge there."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Saturday 21st April 2018. AUDI E-TRON QUATTRO – PART DEUX Timing, eh? Yesterday I found an Audi e-tron Quattro video at the Nürburgring, did a big piece about it, and figured we won’t talk about that car for a while. And then today, thank you Audi, a press release with more hard details! 432 battery cells in a flat sandwich style, under the floor 150kW charging – faster than Jaguar I-PACE or a Tesla Model S The pack weighs some 715 kg, or more than 1,573 pounds. 36 battery modules in each pack, each about the size of a shoe box – each containing 12 pouch cells Engineers favoured pouch-type cells over prismatic, for cooling and packaging WLTP rating is 250 miles or 400km. There’s no EPA range yet. The active thermal management is a set of circuits filled with anti-freeze Cool our from outside cools the battery, but if that’s too warm, the air con compressor cools the battery, including when 150kW charging There’s a heat pump to extract cooling capacity from the air too The pack will be assembled in Brussels and warrantied for 250,000kms There’s a backup battery in case you run the main battery flat, for electronic parking brake, hazard lights and other crucial in-car controls With one smart card, Audi has created an e-tron Charging Service that allows e-tron drivers to tap into an existing network of over 40,000 chargersrun by over 1,000 different providers across Europe – with an app to sort billing. That’s 80% of all AC and DC charging stations in Europe. Smart charging home systems will be offered in 11kW and 22kW configuration. The e-tron will also be equipped with an energy-management system that balances charging with other household electricity demands, and allows owners to schedule charging during times when cheaper off-peak electricity rates apply. GreenCarReports says: “This 400-volt charging system will be joined at some point in the future by 800-volt systems that can charge at 350kW. That system could bow on the production version of the Porsche Mission-E. A 350kW charger would be able to charge the e-tron pack in about 12 minutes, which Audi compares to a gas-car fill-up time of about 7 minutes. The SUV arrives late this year in Europe, and sometime in 2019 in the U.S. Based on the VW Group’s MLB architecture, it’s something of a one-off: future Audi electric vehicles will be derived from a new group MEB compact electric-car or PPE large electric-car architecture. In August, the e-tron will have a world premiere in Brussels, along with other electrified Audi products.”   MERCEDES EQC Inside EVs reports the Mercedes EQC has been “caught roaming the streets of Germany as a fully disguised prototype. The EQ C, as it will be called, was undergoing the final testing rounds ahead of its world premiere as a production model later this year, presumably at the same auto show in the City of Lights scheduled to open its doors early October” They also point to the two electric motors, 0-60 in less than 5 seconds, and the concept was due to do 310 miles from a 70kWh battery.   BMW WILL BRING THE IX3 TO CHINA SHOW At this year’s edition of Auto China, the motor show will see the debut of the Concept iX3” reports AutoEvolution highlighting a teaser video BMW released yesterday.  They continue: “ the iX3 will be offered with a dual-motor configuration. In addition to all-wheel-drive surefootedness, an electric motor for each of the two axles translates to BMW-like performance in a straight line as well. After the MINI EV and iX3, BMW is set to launch the “fifth-generation electric drivetrain” in 2021. The goal is to deliver 700 kilometers (435 miles) of driving range per charge”.   MERCEDES GLE550E The Mercedes GLE 550e is a hybrid which has an output of the 85-kW motor and 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is capped at 436-hp and 479 lb-ft fed to all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. There’s an 8.7-kWh of lithium ion battery. Forbes reports: “with a full charge, the EPA says it can do about 10 miles with a bit of the engine blended in or up to about 8 miles if you put it in EV-only mode”   MAYBACH REVEALED BY MISTAKE On the podcast we talked recently about the interior of an electric Maybach and now, it seems to be a minisite which was turned on the internet by mistake before being taken down, not before images were captured. Autoblog say: “There's a big waterfall grille flanked by low, aggressive three-unit headlights, and the detailing is a combination of SUV cues and something a lot more luxurious. It's not easy to design a three-box sedan that's still recognizably an SUV. Inside, there's white leather and rose-gold detailing everywhere.” It’s all wheel drive, it’s all electric, the battery is said to be 80kWh and a limited top speed of 155mph. It’s not the biggest battery but 350kW charging gets you 60 miles in 5 mins.   BUILDINGS READY FOR EVS All new and thoroughly renovated residential buildings with more than ten parking spaces must be equipped with the appropriate pre-wiring for a charging point in each parking space. In the case of commercial buildings, 20% of spaces have to be pre-wired” says Fleet Europe: “The move is part of a wider European policy to reduce the CO2 output and to boost the uptake of electric vehicles”   350KW CHARGING NETWORKS IONITY is the high powered charging network supported by BMW, Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen, along with subsidiaries Audi and Porsche. Now they’re said to be talking to Volvo, Fiat-Chrysler, PSA/Opel, Jaguar Land Rover as well as Tesla. There should be 400 of these chargers but so far only 20 are installed I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Report On Long Term Battery Degradation, Luxury EVs From Pininfarina And Maybach | 16 April 2018

EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Monday 16th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 15th April, shows 16,303 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,785 Model 3’s being built per week. BATTERY DEGRADATION Battery degradation is still largely the unknown long term question mark hanging over EV’s. And that’s not because there’s anything wrong with the technology, in general, it’s just the modern era or electric cars are a few years old rather than far longer for ICE cars. In Holland a group of Tesla fans on their forum are gathering data from 350 Teslas and the results have just been updated. The previous results were already very positive but now it seems there is less than 10% degradation after 160,000 miles. Electrek reports: “The data clearly shows that for the first 50,000 miles (100,000 km), most Tesla battery packs will lose about 5% of their capacity, but after the 50,000-mile mark, the capacity levels off and it looks like it could be difficult to make a pack degrade by another 5%. The trend line currently suggests that the average battery pack could cycle through over 300,000 km (186,000) before coming close to 90% capacity” One of the cars reporting into this study has done just over 280,000kms and it has just under 90% battery remaining. Of course we don’t know how many Tesla’s were supercharged every day and which ones were slow charged up to 70% diligently. Although EVs may be relatively new, the 18650 cells which make up the Model S battery packs are quite established now, indeed Tesla only chose that technology when they first started because it was the cost-effective proven choice. The temperature management is surely the key to this, even recently the Nissan LEAF without any thermal management has come under fire with people wanting to rapid charge it multiple times in a row. One commenter summed it up nicely: “By 160,000 miles on various gasoline engine cars I have owned in my life and (not including regular oil/filter changes), I've had to replace: a manifold gasket, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, dropped valve, muffler, and a head gasket. Granted, this wasn't all on the same car. But it is something you will NEVER have to replace on any electric car. To me, 10 percent battery degradation seems acceptable as a trade off.” The next things which spring to mind, how long will a battery actually last? Certainly longer than the other parts on the car I’d hazard to predict. And longer than the car itself probably, depending on where you live. What does this also mean for 2nd life batteries? Well it’s good from the perspective that they will be usable, but bad in that not so many cars will have them to spare.   PININFARINA EV “Plans are in place to launch high-end electric cars under the Pininfarina name” reports MotorAuthority. “The new Automobili Pininfarina was launched on Friday in Rome, where Pininfarina parent company Mahindra was competing in this weekend's Formula E Championship round. The cars will be luxurious, highly advanced and offer extreme performance. The first model arrives this year as the production version of the H2 Speed concept that was shown at the 2016 Geneva auto show. The H2 Speed is a track-only electric supercar that swaps a battery for a hydrogen fuel cell stack, and just 12 will be built. But confirmed Friday, a much more potent model will arrive in 2020 to serve as the flagship of the brand. It will reportedly use technology developed by Rimac as well as Mahindra's Formula E team”. Pininfarina claims that the 2020 hypercar will be capable of 0-62mph in less than two seconds, rivalling the next-generation Tesla Roadster and the Rimac C_Two. 0-186mph is targeted in less than 12 seconds, while a top speed of 249mph has been touted. A production run of around 90 examples is planned for now, with a 311 mile range. TopGear point out “It’ll also come with Level 3+ autonomy, too: not fully autonomous, and the driver will be needed for certain conditions, but a step up from simple lane-keep assist and radar cruise, for example”   MAYBACH EV Mercedes-Maybach revealed a new teaser for what looks like a concept for a new EV. The car is set to debut in just a few weeks at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. This might be the Maybach SUV we reported on a few weeks back”: say AutoBlog: “It's difficult to make out too many details, but it definitely looks different than the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 that we've seen floating around for the past couple of years. A close-up shot of the steering wheel shows the soft blue glow that Mercedes has put on the EQ-branded concept cars. Other images show clean white leather, rose gold trim and a pair of seats flanking a flower-encrusted panel.”   WHEN YOU REALLY NEED A BIG MAC And finally, even when you’re testing one of the worlds best EV sports cars, you still need a Big Mac or 20 nugs. InsideEVs report a Porsche Mission E was seen at a drive thru McDonald’s. They have translated the video description: “During a night refueling near Stuttgart, we ran into a Porsche Mission E Test Mule. During the difficult testing of hungry – the driver went for Big Mac. Thanks to the front line, he couldn’t get away. Check out the video and photos of the prototype model that is likely to unseat Tesla from the throne.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 29th March 2018. TESLA After a stock rout on Tuesday, another day today when Tesla lost over 7% of its value. Of course none of this makes any difference to the products it makes or how much people love the brand. No doubt it will bounce back, and as I’ve said before this isn’t a financial podcast, but the bigger picture is how the mainstream media will start to prophesize the end of electric cars.   THE ELECTRIC MINI REVEALED A YEAR EARLY At the New York International Auto Show yesterday we saw an Electric Mini a year before we were meant to, but this was a Mini Cooper from the 1960s which has been converted to electric with a single motor. Would you like one? Yeah, me too. But you can’t buy it. It’s a one-off model. And a clever way to get us talking about electric minis without showing off the real thing yet. The 1960’s classic mini shape is known around the world and wouldn’t it be amazing if they just made a handful of them for sale. A bit like the recently Fully Charged video with Johnny Smith which featured a converted Jaguar E-Type. Back to the Mini Electric proper, that will arrive in 2019 for the 60th Anniversary of Mini. Of course for now we have to make do with the PHEV Mini Countryman, or the i3 which I’ve heard will be a donor for drivetrain bits.   VW ATLAS PLUG IN CONCEPT Also at the New York International Auto Show, VW showed off a plug in version of their Atlas Cross Sport. Technically at this stage a concept BUT close to production. The ICE is coupled with motors on the front and rear axles, and a respectable 18kWh battery. That’s good for 26 miles / 42kms on pure electric. Production is slated for next year in Tennessee.   EVS NOW EQUIVALENT OF 80MPG A recent analysis showed that EV drivers save 2.3 times as much as those driving ICE cars, and now engineers at the Union of Concerned Scientists has more good news. An EV now gets has the equivalent emissions of a gas car that gets 80 miles to the gallon, and if you can find one of those, then good luck. Fast Company says: “In the Pacific Northwest, where most power comes from hydro, EVs get the equivalent of 96 MPGs. In California, which has plenty of solar, the equivalent is 109 MPG.” Engineer David Reichmuth said: “It’s difficult to make burning gasoline cleaner, and electricity is trending cleaner over time as we shift away from coal and add more renewables. This means that EVs that were sold years ago can run much cleaner than when they were purchased,”   NATIONAL GRID SUPPORTS 2030 ICE BAN Graeme Cooper is the UK National Grid’s electric car grand poobah, and he told the government yesterday that if we moved the 2040 ICE ban forward to 2030, the grid could cope. Yes you can still make a coffee and charge your car! He said: “A deadline of 2030 would still give us enough time to cope with any changes that need to be made. We would support a more ambitious target. It provides a clear focus and allows the networks industry to respond appropriately. Even if you left the 2040 target in place, I think the number of people still buying a conventional petrol or diesel car before that deadline will be a short list. “It’s important on a world stage that the UK matches our neighbours. Norway is the most ambitious with a target of 2025.”   NISSAN LEAF WINS “2018 WORLD GREEN CAR” Another story from the Auto Show currently in NYC, and Eric at InsideEVs reports that a pure BEV has won the “World Green Car” award for the first time. He writes: “The three finalists for the award were: BMW 530e iPerformance vs Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vs Nissan LEAF. Upon receiving the award, Nissan’s Daniele Schillaci, Executive Vice President, Global Marketing and Sales, Zero Emission Vehicle and Battery Business, said: “We’re very proud that since Nissan LEAF launched in 2010, we’ve been able to put more than 300,000 zero-emission electric vehicles on the road worldwide, helping to reduce carbon footprints around the globe. We’re honored to be recognized by this esteemed jury and proud to continue to expand the vision of Nissan Intelligent Mobility.”   TWO NEW MECHANIC TRAINING SCHEMES Long time podcast listeners know I’m worried about the huge industry of mechanics, both working for large dealers and local one-man-band independents. Not only will EVs require fewer visits to the car hospital, but they need retraining urgently. Firstly today Tesla started a new training programme called ‘Tesla Start’. Graduates should get a job with Tesla within 30 days of a graduation but will have to relocate. It’s a 12-week course in North Carolina or California. And in the UK today Allianz Worldwide Partners has teamed up with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) to create a new electric, hybrid and PHEV vehicle training programme for roadside recovery. Skill requirements include identifying AC and DC voltages, as well as high voltage symbols, cabling and components, during maintenance and repair.   PORSCHE MISSION E SPIED TESTING Teslarati have a video worth checking out of the Porsche Mission E at the infamous Nurburgring circuit. They say: “Porsche recently took its Mission E prototype to the Nurburgring in Germany, where it was spotted speeding through one of the tracks’ iconic turns. As could be seen in a brief clip featuring the upcoming all-electric high-performance sedan, the Mission E was able to go through the exit of Brunnchen in classic, aggressive Porsche fashion.   VW TO SELL TWO EV MODELS BY DEC 2019 California already has the e-golf on sale but, one of the conditions of the settlement has been noted by Green Car Reports, and that’s by the end of 2019 VW has to have two more pure BEVs on sale in the state. We know the VW I.D. is coming, if it looks like and Golf and quacks like a Golf, it’s probably a Golf by another name. For clarity, it’s the I.D. and not a Golf replacement. But that might not be on sale in North America in time. So you’re looking at the Audi e-tron Quattro SUV to fill one gap, and the other the Porsche Mission E.   WIRELESS CHARGING HITS THE ROAD Finally we’ve had some hard news, now for the speculations. And would you look at the time, it must be time for another story about wireless charging. Because they come around like clockwork. The University Of Colorado in Boulder have made progress with charging whilst on the move. Professor Afridi explained: “On a highway, you could have one lane dedicated to charging,” adding that a vehicle could simply travel in that lane when it needed an energy boost and could carry a smaller onboard battery as a result, reducing the overall cost of the vehicle. Monday 19th March 2018. AUDI E-TRON QUATTRO Last week was a busy one for Audi, as part of the VW groups announcements of how each brand will electrify, and we got more details about the e-tron Quattro SUV. Audi of course famous for their Quattro technology with all-wheel drive coming from the world of rallying. This is the car current Audi drivers will probably want the most, will be around 80,000 euros or $98,200 according to today’s exchange rate but not official Audi sales data. It will have a 95kWh battery, have three motors for ‘torque vectoring’ and charge up to 150kW, for 80% charge in half an hour.  We also heard something which I hadn’t read before, and that’s some of the Porsche Mission E mechanicals will be used in it, that’s according to Clean Technica. Then we heard from Rupert Stadler, the CEO, that Audi will be borrowing more than just inspiration from their VW brothers and sisters, in the shape of the Porsche Mission-E platform. The first is the e-tron GT, which could be pretty close to the Mission-E but with 4 rings on the front, either way it’s a 4 door sedan that will have performance to match it’s sports car look. The official Audi Sport Twitter account sent this: Here's a sneak peek into the electrified future of Audi Sport – the first draft of the prototype Audi e-tron GT! The four-door Gran Turismo with purely electric drive will be the spearhead of Audi Sport by the year of 2020. #AudiSport #etron #LeagueofPerformance   PORSCHE Sticking with Porsche, GearBrain says Porsche will not be following Tesla's lead by offering free electricity to buyers of its upcoming electric sports cars. Instead, the German automaker says it will charge for electricity from day one, and that it will be a similar price to refuelling with gas. This move is at odds with Tesla, which has offered free use of its Supercharger network for several years and has only recently transitioned away from this strategy by billing all Model 3owners for use of the fast-charging stations.” It's worth saying that Tesla have often made the point that SuperChargers will not be used as a profit centre. The Porsche Mission E will be a 4 seat, four door sports car with two electric motors, all-wheel-drive, more than 600 horsepower and a 0-62mph (100km/h) time of "quite below" 3.5 seconds. Their second car, shown off as a prototype at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, is currently codenamed the Cross Turismo. This electric car will offer similar performance to the Mission E sports car, but is a higher-riding vehicle aimed at the popular crossover segment of the market. Porsche are of course part of the Ionity network of super fast chargers in Europe which will have 350kW charge rates. In North America all of the Porsche dealers will be getting those 800volt chargers to show off their capability to prospective buyers.   7 CARS TO TROUBLE TESLA Porsche Mission E Hyundai Kona EV Jaguar I-PACE Mercedes Benz EQC Audi e-tron Volkswagen I.D. The Tesla Model 3! https://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/sunday-7--cars-tesla-should-be-worried-about-117643.html   RENEWABLES POWER AHEAD According to The Independent in the UK: “Wind power in the UK set a new record today by generating 14 gigawatts for the first time - nearly 37 per cent of the UK's electricity. The National Grid Control Room confirmed that 13.9 gigawatts was the highest ever metered wind output. At 10am on Saturday Wind generated 13.9GW, or 36.9 per cent of the UK's electricity, increasing to 14GW by 11am. The previous record was 13.6GW in January this year. Wind farms produced a record 15 per cent of Britain's electricity in 2017, up from 10 per cent in 2016, according to a report by Drax electric insights.” According to a Tweet by @Sustainable2050 “On Saturday, wind produced 22% of Europe’s electricity! Denmark 91% Ireland 58% Germany 55% UK 33%(!) Spain 31% NL 30% (I don’t think I’ve seen that before)” And @AdamBrowning talked about California solar: This solar record is even more amazing when you factor in the 6.3 GW of rooftop solar in California -- the actual figure was 69%. That's right. The worlds 6th largest economy, and at that moment, 69% of its electricity was coming from solar. Good times.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 7th March 2018.   Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel.  Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow.   BENTLEY LUXURY HYBRID But first of all something I teased at the start of the podcast yesterday, as it was being announced, was the first ever electrified Bentley. The Bentayga Hybrid will come with a 3.0 litre petrol engine combined with a plug in hybrid system capable of 31 miles of silent running. Bentley said this was the “worlds’ first luxury hybrid”. Let’s just give Land Rover a call and see if they would class their recent Range Rover Sport Plug In as either luxury or hybrid. I’m thinking they would. The Bentley can be selected to drive in EV mode, or the common Hold mode, should you be driving into one of the urban areas soon to ban or charge a levy for driving diesels, you can hold the charge and opt run on electrons when you need to. Charging is what you would expect for a battery around 10-15kWh, they said it would fully fast charge in 2hr 30mins, although nowhere could I find the size of the battery or the motor. The combined power from the electric motor means it should get 75g/km on the NEDC measurement here in Europe. A reminder that from later this year all cars will have to move to WLTP standard which is much more like real world driving, and is said to be far less flattering on those big engine luxury cars which have been adding small batteries to achieve theoretical low emissions. The Bentayga is coming in the second half of 2018. http://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/18987/bentley-gets-electrified-with-the-new-bentayga-hybrid https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/bentley/bentley-bentayga-hybrid-2018-suv-price-specs-and-release-date/ http://www.evo.co.uk/bentley/bentayga/20890/bentley-bentayga-phev-revealed-at-geneva-bentley-s-suv-goes-hybrid   HONDA AND TOYOTA NOT DOING THE DIESEL DANCE It has been a busy day of statements from car makers, any one of which would be headline news on another day, but the new kept on coming. First I heard that Honda announced they were cutting diesels from their model line ups. And then Toyota popped up in my news feed, as they said they would stop the sales of diesels in Europe and shift all their focus on electric hybrids, from this year. They said it was due to customer reaction and you can see why, with less than 10% of their fleet being diesels, they’re hardly making a sacrifice. However it will not only generate good publicity but add to the pain for other car makers who commit to diesel, and Toyota are said to be one of the only ones who might achieve the strict new EU rules. More on that later on the show. Toyota has sold over 400,000 hybrids in Europe and are committed to soft hybrids rather than plug in. They aren’t expected to market pure BEV’s until at least 2020. In fact their recent TV ads featured charging stations covered in cobwebs, as they actively tried to take aim at those who want to plug in their cars, with campaigns for their luxury Lexus brand saying they charge themselves. Which sounds like you’re stretching the truth about as far as you can. They’re not magical, they just burn fossils https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Toyota-to-phase-out-diesel-cars-in-Europe-starting-this-year   HONDA CONCEPT TO BE MADE Next do you remember the Honda Urban EV Concept unveiled a few months back at the Frankfurt Motor Show? It’s the cirlcle-eyed, tech laden concept with two bench seats for passengers. And now today at Geneva, Honda confirmed “a production version” is coming. Speaking during Honda’s 2018 Geneva motor show press conference, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe, Philip Ross confirmed the news, “A production version of this highly acclaimed concept will be introduced to Europe during late 2019, and in response to the positive feedback to this model, we expect to open order banks for the Urban EV during early 2019.” https://www.just-auto.com/news/geneva-show-honda-confirms-urban-ev-for-europe-in-2019_id181549.aspx   BMW ADD i4 TO THEIR ELECTRIC RANGE Talking of concepts which have been confirmed, BMW said in Geneva the concept they showed off in Frankfurt will be coming. It’s part of a line up of 25 full BEVs or electrified cars. The concept was, what BMW called, the future of e-mobility. Now it will be made in Munich as the i4. And then they noted the specs which, at concept stage, don’t mean too much to be honest. 0-62mph in 4secs, top speed 120mph, 373 miles ranges and a new battery system made of magical fairy dust. Really the specs don’t mean a thing apart from what sort of segment they might be aiming this at, plus add a little range for optimism. So this puts it in Model S territory. However there’s no date set, and all they say is their range will be complete by 2025. So really having a car which can do what a Tesla did 10 years before it, isn’t too much to boast about. I wonder sometimes if auto execs and their PR handlers know things like this before making these kind of statements. Tesla was so far ahead of its time and continues to innovate, with increasing autopilot sophistication and the Model 3 interior, it doesn’t blow me away to hear a BMW will match a Tesla by 2025. https://www.motor1.com/news/235082/bmw-i4-electric-vehicle-confirmed/   PORSCHE CROSSOVER INTO, ER, CROSSOVERS Onto a car which is here, almost. The Porsche Mission E will be here in 2019 and plans are well advanced, including the installation of 800-volt charging stations at all their dealerships in North America to make use of the 350kW charging in the Mission-E. Yesterday at Geneva Porsche showed off a new model called the Mission E Cross Turismo. This is a crossover utility vehicle, which has all-wheel drive, four doors and room for cargo. The specs mirror that of the Mission-E so 310 miles range with 250 miles added in just 15 minutes of charging time. Although a future model, Porsche says it’s road-ready as it’s built on the work they’ve already done. Given the price it will be up there with Tesla Model S and X territory so will have to be very special, from the pictures, it does look it. https://techcrunch.com/2018/03/06/porsches-mission-e-cross-turismo-is-the-ev-crossover-you-want/    ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA ELECTRICS Aston Martin confirmed at Geneva they’re bringing back their legendary Lagonda brand for all their future electric cars. CEO Andy Palmer explained: “We believe people associate luxury in their cars with a certain traditional and even old fashioned approach because, to date, that is all that’s been available to them. Lagonda exists to challenge that thinking and prove that being modern and luxurious are not mutually exclusive concepts.” So they’re going more the way of Tesla than Bentley, in that automation and pure electrification. Their aim is to work with solid state batteries, they think 400 miles range is the sweet spot and they want to find a way to use induction charging to top the battery in 15 minutes. If some of that sounds a little pie in the sky, it is, because Aston Martin don’t have the deep pockets of their rivals. so they’ll need a partner to achieve those ambitions. https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1115581_aston-martin-to-make-lagonda-a-premium-ev-brand   VW CHIEF SAYS GOVERNMENTS NEED DIESEL And now, if you felt the room go a little cold, let’s finally get onto someone who made big headlines yesterday – Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller. The more I think about this statement the more I don’t think he would have wanted the press to pick up on one phrase, when English is his second language. However let’s see what he said to Bloomberg: “Diesel will see a renaissance in the not-too-distant future because people who drove diesels will realize that it was a very comfortable drive concept. Once the knowledge that diesels are eco-friendly turns up in people’s minds, then for me there’s no reason not to buy one.” “The rules of the game in the EU in relation to climate protection and emissions goals on CO2 are so challenging that governments cannot do without diesel,” he said. And this from a company which would have an extra $30billion in the bank were it not for Dieselgate. From that we’ve seen cities introduce diesel bans in the future, other makers run away from the fuel, and even in Germany they’re talking about bans. The problem comes from European Union regulations to cut carbon dioxide. CO2 was the focus of pollution many years ago and diesel at the time was seen at the answer, without the full dire consequences on public health realised from particulates and Nitrogen Oxides. The next target on the horizon is an EU rule that fleet emissions from all cars sold by each brand should be 95g of CO2 per km by 2021. Meeting that would be slightly easier with diesel, but since Dieselgate, public opinion has turned. Saying that, Mueller told reporters VW won’t miss those targets. Which doesn’t make sense – if VW can hit the targets, why the panic? Because these are hefty fines coming for those that miss the target. Diesel sales fell 19% in Germany last month, and in the UK last month were 35% down from 50% in 2014. Last October investment research house MSCI warned all carmakers apart from Toyota are at risk of being fined by the EU for missing targets https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-05/volkswagen-ceo-predicts-renaissance-for-embattled-diesel-cars https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-autoshow-geneva/diesel-collapse-gives-automakers-carbon-headache-idUKKCN1GI0QN?utm_source=applenews   WHILST THE UK GOVERNMENT SAYS THEY DON’T NEED DIESEL Finally, I don’t often read a government tweet, but this one caught my attention. In the UK a tax exemption for taxi drivers starts next month in April, to get an extra £1550 off a new electric cab. Zero emission taxis also have no road tax to pay. Each London diesel cab replied with an electric REX saves 7 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, and there are 75,000 on the roads. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond said: "This is a victory for the environment and new technologies, which I am determined to support as we build an economy fit for the future. Ensuring the air in our bustling towns and cities is free from pollution is part of our quest to become the first government to leave the environment in a better state than we found it. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/tax-break-to-help-black-cabs-go-green https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/black-taxi-drivers-offered-1550-to-dump-diesel-a3782761.html?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#link_time=1520338376   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Monday 19th February 2018. On the podcast today…   You’ve heard the argument a thousand times – someone won’t buy an EV until the time it takes to charge is the same as filling up with a tank at the petrol station. But now a new study shows that owning an EV actually saves you time because of where and when you charge. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/02/18/evs-can-actually-save-time-depending-driving-circumstances/ A new video clip of the Tesla Roaster has surfaced which was actually shot on 14th February – happy Valentine’s Day to this person who saw some testing at the Freemont factory test track. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-roadster-spy-shot-launch-fremont-factory-test-track/ Meanwhile, remember those shots of Model 3’s in air freight, strapped in and heading to Germany via aircraft? Now a German newspaper says one of the luxury Germany marques paid $230,000 for each car before test driving them and then dismantling them. https://electrek.co/2018/02/17/tesla-model-3-german-automaker-reverse-engineered/ More details about the performance of the Porsche Mission E seem to confirm that whilst it would lose a drag race to a Tesla Model S, it’s being engineered to have all of its power available for a longer period of time. This makes it suitable to track days thanks to an advanced cooling system. https://carbuzz.com/news/porsche-mission-e-will-destroy-the-tesla-model-s-at-the-track The Chevrolet Bolt is starting to show increased sales from former Model 3 reservation holders who are frustrated at continued delays. In the U.S. it also means they are guaranteed to get the maximum possible tax rebate. https://carbuzz.com/news/chevrolet-has-tesla-to-thank-for-a-run-on-bolt-evs And finally a recommendation of what to watch on Youtube. If you haven’t already seen it, you have to check out the latest video from Fully Charged with Jonny Smith heading to California to test three VW concept cars – the ID, ID Crozz and ID Buzz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQut6ks3nSY&feature=youtu.be   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Tuesday 13th February 2018. On the podcast today… BMW is working on a 10-year plan to guarantee cobalt and lithium supply, down to the level of the mine. The CEO of Panasonic in North America says they’re ready to expand cell production wherever it’s needed, including expanding their facilities Japan. The Porsche Mission E could have the initial production run of 20,000 cars doubled following strong interest, not only in EVs in general, but specifically the Mission E. Chinese Changan Auto confirm to a total phase out of gas powered cars by 2025. Reports of another update to the Renault Zoe ZE40, not to the battery size, but to the motor. The R110 would have an 82kW motor, which is 20% more powerful, combined with an updated CCS Combo charger. The BMW X7 is heading to the LA Auto Show later this year which could include a Plug In Hybrid version to go up against the equivalent models from Range Rover and Mercedes. And finally the Jaguar I-PACE has been spotted by forum member, pulling 5kWh over 40mins from the AC charger. Sadly no photos of the interior were available so we’ll have to wait until the unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show.   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
