WESTERN EUROPE EV MARKET – MARCH 2021 - PHEV volumes in Q1 2021 were ahead of BEVs for the first quarter out of the past ten - German xEV production recorded its highest mix of total monthly production on record (18.8%) remaining within a 15% - 20% corridor for the sixth month out of the last seven. - Tesla was the No.1 BEV brand in both March and Q1 and also recorded the most registered model with its Model 3 during the same periods. - Tesla managed to halt its 12-month cumulative rolling market share decline at 13%. The report expects Tesla to regain traction in 2021, with its market share set to return to closer to 20 per cent by the end of the year. Its 12-month running peak was 31 per cent at the end of 2019 according to the report. VW Group led the way in the 12-month period up to and including March 2021 with 23 per cent share of the total BEV market. - German xEV passengers cars in circulation (Parc) remain on course to be the first European market to hit the 1 million mark before by the end of this summer and just before German Chancellor Merkel departs her post, securing her electric legacy, all be it one year behind the government's original target. - SUV/Crossovers remained the largest BEV car sector. - The total West European 12-month BEV cumulative total up to and including March 2021 was 0.8 million units, with the 1 million 12-month cumulative mark expected to be reached this summer. The BEV share of the total market over the same period was 7.4 per cent. https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/q1-2021-west-european-electric-car-market-report From Jose Pontes: "#1 Tesla Model 3 – The sports sedan returned to form, by delivering 24,184 deliveries last month, a larger than expected high tide, allowing it to register 4 times more units than the runner-up Hyundai Kona EV. Regarding March, the Model 3 hade several 4-digit scores, namely in the United Kingdom (6,500 units), France (4,524), Germany (3,699), Norway (2,169), Italy (1,363) and Sweden and Austria, both with 1,192 units each." http://ev-sales.blogspot.com/2021/04/europe-march-2021.html But compare to January: http://ev-sales.blogspot.com/2021/02/europe-january-2021.html SEE JESS BEZOS DRIVING A RIVIAN R1T https://twitter.com/blueorigin/status/1387763989917151234 https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/7nrK1/s1/blue-origin-s-rivian-r1t-driven-by-jeff-bezos.jpg https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/kvyrn/s1/blue-origin-s-rivian-r1t-driven-by-jeff-bezos.jpg CHARGING INDEX PLACES MERCEDES IN FIRST PLACE "The victory of the Mercedes EQS is no coincidence and is based on several factors. For example, the EQS has the largest net capacity at 107.8 kWh. The battery of the Tesla Model S P100D still contains a lush 95 kWh. The Porsche Taycan comes in at 83.7 kWh. A lot helps a lot. The buyers of the Mercedes can draw on the full capacity." says electrive: "At the same time, the power consumption of the EQS is low on the motorway, thanks to good aerodynamics. The drag coefficient of cW=0.20 and the frontal area of 2.51 square metres result in a cA value of 0.5. With battery-electric cars that have a poor cA value, long-distance suitability suffers. This applies above all to SUVs, which have too large a frontal area due to their height. The third essential aspect for progress is the charging power in the defined window from 10 to 80 per cent SOC. All electric cars in the top 10 of the Charging Index have an average of over 100 kW. And the Mercedes EQS, unlike the Porsche Taycan, does not have an 800-volt battery system. But the large capacity enables a peak power of over 200 kW and an average of 164 kW even on a 400-volt basis. And they won't be built just from GM-sourced batteries, but by actual GM-employee hands, as confirmed by an Acura spokesperson to The Drive." writes James Gilboy: "Slated to be sold in North America first, these two electric crossovers will, according to a previous report, be built at two separate GM plants. The Honda model will reportedly enter production in 2023 in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, where the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox are made, and the Acura will allegedly follow in 202 at Spring Hill in Tennessee." An email to The Drive: ""We are jointly developing two EV SUVs models using GM's Ultium batteries for the North American market as 2024 model year, one for the Honda brand and one for the Acura brand. GM is making enhancements to Energy Assist, a standard feature available in the myChevrolet mobile app for Bolt EV owners. Energy Assist, first available for customers back in 2017, currently enables Bolt EV owners to plan and manage their routes more effectively, locate available charging stations – both along their route and in the area – monitor their route and receive real-time alerts if their range projections change dramatically. Energy Assist is integrated with data from the vehicle, which enables intelligent planning and precise charge time predictions. GM is now displaying dynamic data from charging networks EVgo and ChargePoint within Energy Assist, and information provided by charging networks includes real-time data on charge station status to indicate if a charging station is available. At eligible charging stations, owners can now link their EVgo account to activate and pay for charging sessions right from the myChevrolet mobile app, eliminating the need to toggle between apps and streamline the payment process. Eligible charging stations are noted within the myChevrolet mobile app. TESLA FIRMWARE REVEALS ~110 KWH BATTERY PACK "Tesla is working on a new 110 kWh battery pack configuration that can stretch range well beyond 400 miles, according to a new discovery made in Tesla’s battery management system (BMS) firmware." says Teslarati: "Jason Hughes, a notable Tesla owner and hacker who first uncovered the company’s plans for a “P100D” variant in 2016, found references to a larger battery pack capacity in the latest BMS firmware. “There is a packID that starts life set to ~109 kWh usable (400+ miles),” noted Hughes via Twitter, further suggesting that Tesla might be preparing for a battery pack as large as 115 kWh in capacity when factoring Tesla’s battery reserve. Additionally, Hughes discovery points to a new battery pack configuration with 108 cells per group at ~450 volts per pack that could very well be a universal design to replace the aging Model S and Model X battery pack, while centralizing architecture for the Model 3 and upcoming Model Y." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-110-kwh-battery-pack-400-miles-range/ A LOOK INSIDE THE NEW LOTUS EVIJA PRODUCTION FACILITY "The new assembly hall is next to the Lotus test track where each of the 130 Evijas to be hand-assembled will be tested before delivery. Lotus says series production and first customer deliveries begin in the summer, with the first year’s production allocation of the circa £2m hypercar already assigned." reports Goodwood.com: "Lotus says the Evija employs its two thousand metric horsepower to get to 62mph in under 3.0 seconds and (more significant) goes from 0-186mph in under 9.0 seconds. As energy density increases, more energy can be extracted from a battery pack of the same weight. “Battery energy densities keep getting better,” Colin McKerracher, Head of Advanced Transport at BloombergNEF, said. “They’ve almost tripled at the cell level since 2010.”. McKerracher commented about battery pricing as well, noting that the price of lithium-ion batteries has continued to fall in recent years. The trend is expected to continue in 2020, with BloombergNEF estimating a price drop from $156/kWh in 2019 to $135/kWh in 2020." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/19/bloombergnef-lithium-ion-battery-cell-densities-have-almost-tripled-since-2010/ AMERICAN MANGANESE ANNOUNCES UP TO 99.72 PERCENT PURITY FROM RECYCLING TEST "American Manganese Inc. It holds the new time and speed records for the publication, at least in terms of fully electric vehicles based on MT testing. The car enthusiast magazine states, the "previous battery-electric vehicle (BEV) record holder was the Tesla Model S P100D (aka "Plood") Ludicrous+ with its 10.51-second pass at 125.0 mph." However, the tested Taycan Turbo S went "a significant 5.7 mph faster with a 10.47-second, 130.7-mph pass."" https://insideevs.com/news/399558/porsche-taycan-quarter-mile-record/ PORSCHE TAYCAN REPORTEDLY GETTING ENHANCED BATTERY PACK "Porsche is reportedly planning to roll out an enhanced battery pack for Taycan Turbo, Turbo S, and 4S." says Teslarati: "The news about the Porsche Taycan’s enhanced battery pack come amid a barrage of negative reports about the electric car, many of which were driven by the vehicle’s subpar EPA range ratings. Whether it will come as a software or hardware update, this development can help reshape the negative narrative around the Porsche Taycan so far. In December, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated the range of the Taycan Turbo at 201 miles per charge, which shows it lags behind competitors such as Tesla, Audi, and Jaguar. Volkswagen and “Volkswagen und Audi Partnerverband” (Volkswagen and Audi partner association) have agreed a new sales model for the all-electric ID. family in Germany. A format similar to the agency model for major customers that has already proven its worth over many years will also apply for ID. models sold to private customers and small commercial enterprises. Following the go-ahead from retail partners, the agency agreement is to be added to the new dealer contracts that come into effect from April. In their role as agents, dealers make the arrangements for selling the ID. family to private customers and small commercial enterprises. This primarily relates to acquisition, sales consultation, organizing test drives, transaction processing and vehicle handover in coordination with Volkswagen. The customer’s preferred dealer receives a commission and a bonus identical to showroom-based business, even if the vehicle is bought online. At the same time, the partner is no longer tasked with vehicle financing and the sales process is simplified because the partner no longer needs to negotiate the price. https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-and-partner-association-agree-new-sales-model-for-id-family-in-germany-5793 LEVC STARTS MAKING RANGE EXTENDER VANS "The maker of Britain’s iconic black cabs is building a plug-in hybrid van that can travel for 377 miles without recharging or filling up, in a bid to win over long-distance delivery firms and other companies that rely on purely gasoline vehicles." says Bloomberg.com: "The as-yet unnamed one-ton van goes on sale in October and is derived from the TX5 London taxi launched two years ago. The vehicle can run for 80 miles on its electric motor, after which a 1.5.-liter “range extender” engine kicks in to recharge the battery and increase its span to almost five times that. “You get zero emissions in the city but you can also drive the length of the country with the range extender, so range anxiety becomes a thing of the past. LEVC, owned by China’s Geely sold 2,500 TX cabs last year, almost all of them in the U.K. That was more than double the total for 2018. That still leaves huge untapped capacity at its plant near Coventry in central England, which is capable of churning out 20,000 autos annually.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-19/range-busting-electric-van-targets-parcel-firms-to-plumbers NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Are you happy to pay extra for add-on features or apps for your EV, after you’ve bought it? Show #530 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. An update on the podcast disappearing from Spotify: “This is a Spotify issue. All the podcast web browser links do not work currently on Spotify. Spotify is aware of the issue and they are working on a fix.” 2020 LOTUS EVIJA EV HYPERCAR DEBUTS WITH NEARLY 2,000 HP "When Lotus began teasing its new Evija electric hypercar, we were told it would blow our minds. It’s now revealed, and yes, the stats are indeed very impressive." according to Motor1.com: "The Evija is the first new product to come from Lotus since joining the expanding Geely automotive network, and if these figures hold true for the 130 road-going examples slated to begin production next year, it will be one heck of a performer. Lotus says the Evija will boast no less than 1,973 horsepower (1,471 kilowatts), sent to the pavement through four electric motors capable of generating 493hp (368 kW) each. Lotus says the Evija will sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 3 seconds. While certainly fast, that figure doesn’t sound terribly impressive when you consider many gasoline-powered hypercars can run faster with much less power, not to mention Tesla Model S P100d. Lotus says the two-seater needs just another 3 seconds to hit 200 km/h (124 mph), and...it will hit 300 km/h (186 mph) in less than 9 seconds." Lotus says:" As a name, Evija (pronounced ‘E-vi-ya’) means ‘the first in existence’ or ‘the living one’. Hethel, close to the historic city of Norwich in the east of England, UK, has been the home of Lotus since 1966. The company has confirmed production of the Evija will begin there during 2020. The Evija is the first Lotus road car to feature a one-piece carbon fibre monocoque chassis. The cabin, from the fully adjustable race-style seats to the multi-function steering wheel. The Active aerodynamics are deployed in the form of a rear spoiler, which elevates from its resting position flush to the upper bodywork, and an F1-style Drag Reduction System (DRS). Both are deployed automatically in Track mode, though can be deployed manually in other modes. The absence of traditional door mirrors plays a part in reducing drag. Access to the cabin is through the two dihedral doors. Handle-free to preserve the sculpted exterior, they’re operate via the key fob. It’s the first time Lotus has used such doors, and while they make for a moment of dramatic theatre they also provide maximum space for getting in and out. Cameras integrated into the front wings are electronically deployed on unlock, while another camera built into the roof provides a central view. Images are displayed on three interior screens. It also supports fast and convenient servicing and maintenance. Furthermore, the set-up has been designed so that in the future alternative battery packs – for example, to optimise track performance – can be easily installed. Evija is priced from £1.5m-2m plus duties and taxes. A £250,000 refundable deposit secures a production slot. Order books are now open through www.lotuscars.com." It's 8 times more powerful than a Formula E car. And yes it has an app, yes it does OTA updates! https://www.motor1.com/news/360174/lotus-evija-ev-hypercar-debuts/ THIS RECORD-SETTING TESLA MODEL S HAS 900,000 KILOMETERS ON ODOMETER "Hansjörg Gemmingen, known in the EV world for setting the mileage record for the first-generation Tesla Roadster (620,000 km / 385,251 miles), just set another milestone, but this time in a Tesla Model S." reports InsideEVs: "Gemmingen has already covered 900,000 km (559,350 miles) according to two images shared on July 14. The Model S P85 (one of the oldest versions) is reportedly running on its second battery pack. That's a remarkable amount of miles for any car and few gasoline-engined cars would go that far without an engine replacement. What's even more impressive is that someone actually drives this much and choose a Tesla to do so." https://insideevs.com/news/359939/tesla-model-s-900000-kilometers-odometer/ CHINA'S ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POSTS SURPASSED 1 MILLION IN JUNE "With China all in with electric vehicles, the number of charging posts around the country have been exploding. reports Interesting Engineering: "According to the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance as of the end of June, the number of charging posts has surpassed 1 million. According to Xinhua, the official state-run press agency of the People's Republic of China the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance said charging posts have seen year-over-year growth of 69.3%. China added 140,000 new public charging posts during the last year with amounts to about 11,700 new posts introduced each month." https://interestingengineering.com/chinas-electric-vehicle-charging-posts-surpassed-1-million-in-june RAPID CHARGING POINTS 'SHOULD' OFFER CARD PAYMENT OPTION BY 2020 More news from the UK: "The government wants all new electric vehicle rapid charging points to offer drivers the ability to pay using a credit or debit card by next year." says the UK edition of Motor1.com: "In an announcement, the Department for Transport (DfT) said all new charge points “should” offer the facility by the spring of 2020. The government says it “expects” the charging industry to develop a “pay-as-you-go” payment option across the charging network, ensuring drivers do not need a range of smartphone apps or membership cards to charge their vehicles. While the DfT’s statement does not explicitly say companies will be required to offer card payment by next spring, the government has warned the industry that it will “intervene” if it feels “the market is too slow to deliver improvements across the entire network”. However, one charging provider, BP Chargemaster, has already promised to introducing card payment on all new 50kW and 150kW chargers from today (July 15). It will also retrofit the technology to its existing rapid chargers over the coming year." https://uk.motor1.com/news/359832/rapid-charging-points-card-payments/ VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 ELECTRIC CAR SPOTTED IN NEW ZEALAND "The Volkswagen ID.3 electric hatchback has been spotted in public once again. This time, the ID.3 turned up in the unexpected location of Queenstown, New Zealand." says InsideEVs, and thank you to someone who occasionally sends me shots he's taken from NZ, I won't say this name but he knows who he is! "the ID.3 is being tested in New Zealand by "a few German blokes" whose faces have been concealed. Judging by the dirt on one of the cars, there's been some off-the-beaten-path travel involved." Forum member Jose Garzon said: "The photo was taken in Queenstown therefore near Wanaka where SHPG (Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds) is based. Plenty of tracks there for winter testing specially calibration. Nowadays development timings are shorter so if possible, companies will either travel north or south to find the corresponding climate to keep their work unstopped. If you want to see it from the positive point of view, this images mean they are performing their final winter fine-tuning activities. On the other hand it can mean, "crap, this is not working and we need to launch the car, send the car to NZ and get it right"" https://insideevs.com/news/360148/vw-id3-spy-new-zealand/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA PETITIONS FOR FIRST-EVER EMOJI IN SUPPORT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES As modern-day communication evolves, emojis continue to grow in popularity, with 230 new characters being added to major platforms in 2019. As such, it’s important that they be representative of today’s world, which increasingly includes electric vehicles and the stations that charge them. That’s why Electrify America – with its network of ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles – has submitted a formal proposal to the Unicode Consortium, the governing body for emoji creation, to introduce the first-ever “Electric Vehicle With Charger” emoji for smartphone keyboards. COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… Should all chargers be open to everyone, or is it OK to have walled gardens? Today, Ryan talks about a product that integrated itself into his life journey and why he chose to invest in it. His Tesla. Tune in for his advice on when to be frugal and when to spend as well as why (and how) you shouldn't pay cash for bigger ticket items. Key Takeaways [:22] Living frugally — which Ryan did while building a 6 figure business from his dorm room and paying himself 500 $ a month — means driving a Chevy Cobalt with manual crank windows who's engine finally blows out. He was the first person in his family to buy the new car he wanted. Bruce, the Kia Sportage. He still owns Bruce. [1:38] Once he started making legitimate money but more importantly when he found out he was going to be a father, he decided to give Bruce to his partner, and started looking for his new car. [2:05] How do you feel driving a Tesla? New. Ryan bought the Tesla a little bit for the insane button, but this car reflected his growth, and gave him the confidence to be what he felt he had evolved into. It was an investment in training his brain to think bigger. [3:47] This investment helped Ryan because he could afford it. It's important to push yourself to more, but always within your means. Living above your means will foster a mindset of scarcity and fear. [4:23] Ryan's Tesla life lesson is also a lesson in business: your customers are on their own journey: if you communicate how your product or service helps them on that journey, they will be willing to pay a premium for it. [4:50] How does Ryan find balance between frugality and expense? The answer is two-fold: 1. Will it stress you out? 2. Can you pay cash for it? If you can pay cash, it's okay to buy it (but don't actually buy it cash! Ryan explains why, and what to do instead. Mentioned in this episode Kia Sportage Tesla Model S P100D

CONGRATULATIONS NISSAN The Nissan LEAF today became the first electric car in history to surpass 400,000 sales, solidifying the model’s leading role in the global shift toward more sustainable mobility. Introduced in 2010 as the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF has led the way in making the excitement and convenience of electric driving accessible to non-luxury buyers. Less than a decade ago, electric cars were seen as a niche product, and LEAF customers were mostly “early adopters.” “AN ELECTRIC PORSCHE DRIVES JUST AS SPORTY AS ANY OTHER PORSCHE” Electromobility is the dominant theme of the Geneva Motor Show. At the Volkswagen Group Night, Porsche presented the Panamera Sport Turismo with hybrid drive and charging station for example. Simon Vogt (E-Services - Sales & Operations) said: “Anyone who buys an electric or hybrid model from Porsche is offered a seamless and reliable charging experience and does not have to worry about charging. Everything is prepared. As soon as the customer wants it, the navigation system reliably guides them to a suitable charging station. There he simply inserts the plug and charges the desired range. Thanks to Plug and Charge, tiresome authentication processes are a thing of the past. Payment is also made automatically via the Porsche Charging Service. Put simply: car and charging station recognize each other as soon as the charging plug is inserted. The electricity price is also fixed, so that the amount due is simply debited from the customer's personal account. In principle, all drivers of hybrid and electric vehicles can charge via the Porsche Charging Service." And on the subject of performance he says: "With optimum drive technology and the right vehicle concept, the Porsche characteristics can be exploited even further through its electric models. For example, the center of gravity of the Taycan is lower than that of the 911, thanks to the underbody battery. Therefore, an electric Porsche is at least as sporty as a combustion engine." $35,000 TESLA MODEL 3 LEADING TO PRICE CUTS ON CHEVY BOLT "Regardless of our previous reports that high demand is pushing up the price of the Hyundai Kona Electric at some dealerships, it appears Chevrolet dealers are taking the $35,000 Tesla Model 3 seriously and adjusting prices according."writes Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "The Chevrolet Bolt is seeing discounts as high as $7,000. One of our avid readers from the state of Oregon has been tracking 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV pricing at local dealerships." The headline price is $37,000 and of course there are federal and state level incentives too. https://insideevs.com/35000-tesla-model-3-leading-price-cuts-chevy-bolt/ TESLA MODEL S CALLED AMERICA’S “GREATEST MUSCLE CAR” "Former Top Gear host and current The Grand Tour presenter James May recently experienced the joys and exhilaration of Ludicrous Mode, courtesy of the Tesla Model S P100D." Reports Simon for Teslarati: " May mentioned several of the vehicle’s merits in his review, such as its power, technology, and its quiet, comfortable ride. The former Top Gear host even acknowledged the vehicle as America’s next-generation muscle car. “The Tesla Model S P100D is the greatest muscle car America has ever produced — which means, it’s the greatest muscle car the world has ever produced,” May commented. May did mention that the vehicle is unique in the way that Tesla is unique, even if some of the cars’ basic characteristics such as its panels have not reached the level of refinement as entries from veteran automakers. Pointing out some of the P100D’s quirky features that are based on Elon Musk’s sense of humor such as Fart Mode, May notes that there is simply no other car like the Model S on the road today, and from an automaker that is unlike anyone else in the industry." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-p100d-james-may-review/ BOB LUTZ SAYS TESLA SHOULD AND SHOULDN'T HAVE RETAILS STORES Mark Kane at InsideEVs reports: “Bob Lutz, former GM Chairman, was interviewed a few days ago by CNBC about Tesla and he doesn’t believe that Tesla will be able to shift sales entirely online, by the way of the introduction of $35,000 Model 3 Standard battery option.” Bob Lutz said: “I always said it was totally ridiculous to own your own dealership, you own the real estate, you own the people, you own the new car inventory, you own the used car inventory – a massive misallocation of company capital. So now they’re getting out of that, they’re gonna close stores, they’re going to try to do all the sales online. I don’t see how that’s gonna work. Who’s gonna take the trade-in, who’s gonna take the used cars, who’s gonna provide service with no stores there.” https://insideevs.com/bob-lutz-skeptical-tesla-online-sales-video/ MITSUBISHI ENGELBERG TOURER MAKES GLOBAL PREMIERE AT 2019 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Named after the famous ski resort in central region of Switzerland, best known for its panoramic views, well-groomed runs and challenging off-piste skiing and snowboarding, the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer is a Twin Motor, 4WD, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) which delivers high levels of performance in the most challenging weather conditions and on all road surfaces. It combines this with the long cruising range inherent to the PHEV, allowing journeys out of town and to places with no charging infrastructure. The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer has an EV cruising range of over 43 miles/70 km (WLTP cycle) and with a fully charged battery and full fuel tank it has a total cruising range of over 434 miles/700 km (WLTP). NIO SCRAPS FACTORY PLANS, ANNOUNCES $1.4 BILLION NET LOSS, STOCK FALLS "Chinese EV startup Nio has announced that it won’t be building its own manufacturing plant in Shanghai after all." Reports Phil at Electrek: "Nio released its Q4 and full 2018 financial results on Tuesday, and the company said the agreements it reached in 2017 to build its own manufacturing plant in Jia Ding, Shanghai have been terminated. Nio will continue to use its existing plant with state-owned JAC Motors to build its cars. The company says the agreement will “give it capacity and flexibility to support its market penetration and growth plans for the next two to three years.” The company reported $720 million in revenue for 2018, but it also posted a $1.4 billion net loss, nearly doubling its losses from the previous year." https://electrek.co/2019/03/06/nio-scraps-factory-plans-announces-1-4-billion-net-loss-stock-falls/ BMW X3 XDRIVE30E HEADLINES A NEW AND OVERHAULED PHEV RANGE BMW is touting its new and improved range of plug-in hybrids at the Geneva Motor Show. At the volume end, the BMW X3 xDrive30e goes into production in December this year and puts a plug-in port on BMW's most popular crossover. It pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo gas engine with an electric motor and eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Combined output comes to 252 horsepower, which can be temporarily upped to 293 hp with a press of the XtraBoost button.” reports Autoblog: “The lithium-ion battery under the rear seat maintains the luggage volume of the conventional X3. The 6.5-second dash to 62 miles and hour puts it about 0.4 seconds behind the regular, 248-hp four-pot X3.” Reports Autoblog: “Next come upgraded, second-gen versions of the electrified 2, 3, 5, X5, and 7 Series ranges. The 330e runs up to 37 miles on electric power, a 50 percent improvement over the first-gen — but BMW didn't clarify how the 3 Series gained the extra range. As with the X3 PHEV, the 330e harnesses a combined system output of 252 hp and a temporary 41-hp squirt using XtraBoost. The batteries in the 225xe Active Tourer and 530e sedan grow in capacity without growing in size. The 225xe cell is now 9.7 kWh instead of 7.7, extending all-electric range to 29 miles. The 530e battery is rated at 12 kWh, while only taking up the same space as the previous 9-kWh battery. That improves electric range to up to 35 miles. The 530e will also be available with xDrive later this year. https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/bmw-x3-xdrive30e-phev-geneva-vv833kz9/ MERCEDES EQV ELECTRIC VAN CONCEPT DEBUTS, WILL SPAWN PRODUCTION VERSION "Fully electric vans aren't all the rage yet, but Mercedes is trying to change that with its EQV Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Mercedes promises this concept is going to spawn an extremely similar production vehicle. The specs on the concept are promising, too." Reports Autoblog: "The EQV Concept will travel 249 miles on a full charge from its 100 kWh battery pack. It's capable of charging up to 25 percent in just 15 minutes, providing 62 miles of driving. This van won't be a speed demon by any measure, as the single electric motor pushes a modest 201 horsepower to the front wheels. Top speed for the big van is 99 mph." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/mercedes-eqv-electric-van-concept-geneva-k43j5ss9/ HONDA TO FULLY ELECTRIFY Honda took to the stage at Geneva Motor Show to announce the further acceleration of its electrification ambitions. The company announced its intention to move 100 per cent of its European sales to electrified powertrains by 2025. This new ambition builds on the brand’s 2017 aim of two-thirds of its sales to be electrified by 2025, and places it firmly at the forefront of Honda’s global electrification shift announced as part of its 2030 vision. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 25th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. TESLA EMPLOYEE TWEETS ABOUT PRODUCTION RATES Elon Musk tweets about Tesla's production rates, the challenges, the successes. Dave from accounts does NOT. Linda from HR does NOT. John from the Gigafactory does NOT. Except, John Totah did exactly that yesterday. John Totah is the Lead Material Flow for Model 3 at Gigafactory 1 and a Twitter account using his name, so we're assuming it is really him, make some bold claims before they were swiftly deleted. John said: "Our original goal was 2,500/wk and we didn't hit it. Now we just hit 5,000/wk throughput in June. Insanely hard work by @Tesla team." If you didn't know that’s exactly the kind of language and tweet we would get from Elon. You know, the CEO. One of a handful of people on the planet who can comment publicly on Tesla. And not just because they're being precious but because the Q2 production and deliveries, whether batteries or completed cars, is potentially the most important announcement in the history of the company. This is the last week of the quarter. On the bright side that's a doubling in two months so understandably he's proud. He even had time to send a follow up, before he found the delete button: "We want to sustain over 5k/wk since current capacity of the lines are built for a max 6k/wk. It was incredibly difficult to hit 2500 in March. We revised many processes and built new systems that worked better. Incredible work and brain power." As you may have heard before on the podcast, when I was talking about the production lines heading from Tesla Grohmann Engineering in Germany to Nevada, to fix one of the four zones, that was when Elon replied directly to me to confirm it. Super exciting, so we knew they had a shutdown to speed up Gigafactory. And once JB Straubel was tasked with sorting out Zone 4 at Giga, and it would amazing new if true before batteries were a bottleneck at one point. He wasn't clear on his tweet whether the throughput was specifically about his area of responsibility, or overall Model 3 production rates at Giga. And remember none of this means Freemont is on target for 5,000 Model 3's week. The twitter account has now been protected. The news was reported on Reddit, Electrek etc, so I feel it can be reported on. ANOTHER TESLA INTERIOR UPDATE InternetDude: "So I finally got my 2018 Tesla Model S P100D. I ordered it with cream interior but it was supposed to have figured ash dark wood. Tesla made a production change just about 10 days after I ordered and changed almost all of the aluminium accents to dark graphite colour instead. They also changed to the wood to a natural oak decor finish, more like the Model 3." MAD MAX MODE FOR AUTOPILOT LANE CHANGE Elon has tweeted a picture of the centre display with the car running in 'development mode'. Within Feature Settings you can now enable Mad Max mode in the 'Blind Spot Threshold'. He also joked: "We considered going beyond Mad Max to “LA Freeway” level, but that’s too loco". It follows his retweeting of an old post from 2017 from a twitter user which photoshopped a Tesla Semi into a Mad Max type future. The current options you can see in Dev Mode are Standard, Aggressive and Mad Max. He also talked about how a self-driving car is programmed to yield in the event of a conflict: "It’s a tough call. Reality is that it will be pretty easy to bully a self-driving car, as it will always yield. Will prob have a manual override that requires continuous press for hardcore lane changes." Surely this will be part of Version 9 software coming this Autumn with self-driving features. So whereas currently you initiate a lane change with the blinker, it's your call to ensure the road is clear, this is a hint towards more autonomy. The other options you can see now are “Follow Nav,” “Blinker to Fork,” “Enable ULC,” and “Vision Stops." CAR MAGAZINE - MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REVIEW: A STRONG CASE FOR HYBRIDS CAR Magazine UK: "we headed out to Provence, France, for a spin to see how the changes stack up. This engine revision plus work on the battery – which gets 10% more power output and total capacity of 13.8kWh thanks to new cells and better management - has allowed Mitsubishi to recalculate maximum electric range, fuel economy and CO2 emissions for new-age, more realistic WLTP testing, and the results are more impressive for that reason. We’re talking 30 miles on electric power, 141mpg and 46g/km. You’re also able to drive faster on electric power – now 84 rather than 78mph. ts PHEV tech is so effective, in fact, that it’s set to be rolled out to larger Renault and Nissan models in the coming years as that new alliance comes to fruition. In return, pure EV bits from the Leaf will go the other way and be used on smaller Mitsubishis." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/mitsubishi/outlander-phev/ FIRST 350KW CHARGER OPENS IN GERMANY Fastned are a charging network here in Europe with 73 stations in and they just posted a Twitter video of their first station opening in Germany. That's the first of 18 in Germany this year but goal is in the hundreds. They say it's in the A3 at Limburg an der Lahn and if you have a car which can take advantage of slightly faster speeds like a Hyundai IONIQ or Jaguar I-PACE you'll be pleased to hear they're 350 kW DC chargers. The charging station is covered in solar panels too, and all of the energy they source is renewable. Bart Lubbers is the co-founder of Fastned and said: "In the next few years, German car manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes will introduce fully electric models that can charge at high power. This is a great challenge and opportunity for the automotive industry and charging companies like Fastned.” We heard recently Fastned also have plans for the UK and Belgium. ITALY AIMS TO PASS NORWAY AS EUROPE'S NO. 1 EV MARKET Bloomberg broke the news yesterday: "The populist government in Italy, Europe’s most sluggish market for electric cars, has a big-bang plan to put 1 million of the vehicles on the nation’s roads. Getting anywhere near that target could cost the state $10 billion in incentives." com: "Italy’s new populist government has a plan to put 1 million electric vehicles on the nation's roads by 2022 in an effort to go from being the region's weakest EV market to replacing Norway as its strongest. Italians last year bought just some 2,600 full-electric cars, out of a total of about 2 million vehicles sold, and the number rises only to around 4,800 if plug-in hybrid models are included, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Fewer than 5,000 full-electric models are estimated to be on the country's roads today. And that's the problem, critics say. To go from being an EV backwater to Europe's biggest market, the Italian government would need to roll out incentives at least at the level of Norway's, which could cost several billion euros, analysts say. Even that might not be enough." JAGUAR LAND ROVER'S £13.5BN INVESTMENT Times Of India report: "Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has lined up investment worth 13.5 billion pounds in the next three years on new models, technology development and capacity addition. The investments will be on new models, technology, capacity with significant amount of it on electrification and on a new platform" JLR said: "Our roll out to MLA will be fully complete by 2025, at which point every product can cater for an ICE (internal combustion engine), BEV (battery electric vehicle) or PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) derivative." NEW PEUGEOT 308 PHEV COMING IN GTI FORM French motoring site Caradisiac says the next gen Peugeot 308, which you'll be able to buy in 2020, will rely on electric power for GT and GTi status. The GT model most likely to couple up a gas engine with electric motor both driving 220 hp to the front wheels. Whilst the GTi will add an electric motor to the rear axle for AWD and 300hp. It’s Friday 8th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ELECTRIC CAR SWITCH The plans I've talked about on previous podcasts, to switch World Rallycross Championship cars to being electric, has been approved by the governing body the FIA World Motor Sport Council. I first heard of plans for this last year, and then earlier this year invitations were sent out for companies who wish you tender for the supply of the battery and chassis. This is very significant news as it starts from 2020. World Rallycross is a fast-paced, high adrenaline sport for drivers and spectators alike, with the electric cars eligible for both manufacturer teams and privateers. Every constructor will have the same battery and chassis package, which will be open for privateer teams to homologate as well. We now know Williams will provide all the batteries, as they have done to Formula E up to now, with Formula E moving to McLaren for the 2018/19 season. IN fact some of those specs from Formula Ewill be used to derive the regulations which will govern the manufacturers and private teams on the powertrains they design. The stats: two motors, one on each axle, and total power of 500kW. https://www.autosport.com/wrx/news/136578/world-rx-2020-electric-car-move-approved KIA NIRO EV REVEALED TO PUBLIC KIA has revealed its all-new Niro EV at the 2018 Busan International Motor Show today in Korea. They are finally showing off to the public what you and I have talked about for a while since we saw the concept at CES plus official pics last month. As Hyundai have done with the Kona they've taken the combustion car and added some batteries. The charge point is in the front grille behind a flappy slidey cover, and the small LED headlights are something we're seeing more from EV designers. Of course no need for air intakes to keep an engine cool makes the front look way better. As we've mentioned the Kona, in the same way the Niro offers a 64kWh lithium-polymer battery for 279 miles of range. However even though they're sister companies, it's not the same battery as it would be fair to assume. In fact more than one EV blog I've read today said they're fitting the same packs - oopsie! Different suppliers and different chemistry. That's not EPA rated yet though so expect something around 240 miles, still better than base spec Model 3. The motor drives the front wheels with 150kW of power and a brisk, without being face-melting, 0-60mph time of 7.8 seconds. That's the same for both battery options. And charging speeds? Yes they're confirmed for 100kW. The smaller pack is 39.2kWh for 186 miles of range. And if you're like me, I always find myself thinking I need the long range, but when you look at the journeys we make, 186 miles is just fine in nearly all cases. Even if that range came down to real world 100 miles you know the price of a Kia will be super competitive. Inside we have some blue accents for snazziness, look out for a 7inch touchscreen with plenty of buttons, this is no Tesla minimalism. There's an included wireless phone charger, plus plenty of safety tech like Forward Collision Warning with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Intelligent Stop & Go, and Lane Following Assist. As for their version of Autopilot, it's Level 2, so you'll stay in lane on the freeway with accelerating, decelerating, braking and steering up to 80mph. Korean sales start soon with prices elsewhere announced later this year - that's as specific as they'll be. With 5,000 domestic orders in Korea I would expect them to either service all of them first, or a at split it 50:50 for Korea vs Rest Of The World. GM TO SELL HONDA ADVANCED ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES IN NORTH AMERICA Reuters just reported: "General Motors Co will supply advanced batteries to Japan’s Honda Motor Co, the companies said Thursday, a move that could significantly reduce the cost of future electric vehicles at both automakers after 2020. GM and Honda on Thursday said they would “collaborate” on the batteries, with GM supplying cells and modules, mainly for electric vehicles to be sold by both companies in North America. A source familiar with GM’s plans said its current battery cell supplier, Korea’s LG Chem, is expected to provide cells for the new battery, which is mainly a GM design. The new batteries are expected to begin production around 2021, the source said." This looks like the classic win-win. The next gen batteries will be higher energy density than those used in the Bolt and for instance. DRIVER IN FATAL TESLA AUTOPILOT CRASH DID NOT HAVE HANDS ON WHEEL This is such a horrible story to report on but I want to quickly update you. "The driver of a Tesla who fatally crashed in California in March did not have his hands on the steering wheel at the time of the accident, said a preliminary report from the National Traffic Safety Board on Thursday." according to CNBC. NEW NISSAN eNV200 CAMPERVAN Nissan's hidden gem is the eNV200, electric van and people carrier which has recently been updated with the 40kWh battery, and thermal management to handle those who use it as a van and rapid charge regularly for business. "Nissan has taken the covers off a new in-house campervan range at the 2018 Madrid Motor Show. The campers, which are currently exclusively for the Spanish market, with an all-electric e-NV200 version included in the line-up." say AutoExpress: "All the campervans offer an extendable roof, which the maker claims allows four people to sit and stand in comfort. They all also come with a double bed, however, the NV300 is the only van to offer sleeping for four, thanks to a second double bed which is made available once the roof is raised. Inside this larger NV300-based model, there’s a fridge, sink, hob and heater to make sure occupants don’t freeze during their fine dining experience." The campervan eNV200 will be popular for those wanting to cut their emissions whilst enjoying the classic campervan roadtrip experience. DAIMLER TRUCKS NORTH AMERICA UNVEILS TWO ELECTRIC MODELS Daimler press office have been in touch with news that: "Freightliner Trucks premiered two fully electrified commercial vehicles, a Freightliner eCascadia™ heavy-duty truck and a Freightliner eM2 106 medium-duty truck today, during the Daimler Trucks Capital Market and Technology Day here. Freightliner plans to deliver an Electric Innovation Fleet of 30 vehicles to customers later this year for further testing under real-world operating conditions." "The eCascadia has up to 730 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 550 Kwh usable capacity, a range of up to 250 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 200 miles) in about 90 minutes. The Class 8 tractor is designed for local and regional distribution and drayage. The eM2 has up to 480 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 325 Kwh of usable capacity, a range of up to 230 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 184 miles) in about 60 minutes. The eM2 is Freightliner's electrified solution for local distribution, pickup and delivery, food and beverage delivery, and last-mile logistics applications." What did Daimler Trucks chief Martin Daum say? “We are the undisputed global leader of the trucking industry and we intend to remain in that position with electric trucks and buses." Just a reminder on the Tesla Semi range - 500 miles. Which Elon said yesterday was already being improved on for the truck which goes on sale in 2020. PORSCHE MISSION E CROSS TURISMO As well as the Porsche Mission E, the recently unveiled Cross Turismo version is a more rugged version of the same car. Designed to fit your skis in, in you will. And some of the early test mules have been given to journalists in North America. BMWBlog praised the steering and handling, but also said: "It’s also really, really fast. They weren’t allowed to drive it past 50 mph but Porsche claims it has 600 hp from its dual electric motors and is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and 0-124 mph in 12 seconds. The latter performance figure is actually faster than the Tesla Model S P100D. The biggest trick up the Mission E’s sleeves, though, is the fact that it can charge faster than any other electric car before it. With the capability of 800-volt charging, the Porsche Mission E can 250 miles of range in 15 minutes." More of those chargers will be appearing very soon especially in Europe where several networks are at advanced stage of installing them. EV CHARGING MAP ALLOWS ROUND AUSTRALIA EV TRIPS "It’s now possible to drive around Australia in an electric car, thanks to a comprehensive EV charging station map. The Tesla Owners Club of Australia (TOCA) released its Round Australia Electric Highway map this month." according to EnergyMatters.com.au "However, the map is not complete. There are still gaps in fast-charging stations and places where three phase is not available. As a result, TOCA and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) are offering help to property owners. TOCA and AEVA will give a 32 amp 3 phase electrical outlet free to any site which will help build the Round Australia and Red Centre routes to distance intervals of 300 km max. The property owner must install it reasonably promptly at an accessible location, and agree to let electric vehicles charge there." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
