¡Me encanta!

Welcome to new Patreon Producer DANIEL HARRIS NEW RANGE ROVER WORLD PREMIERE FEATURES PHEV, NO BEV (YET)  Every nameplate will be available with pure-electric propulsion by the end of the decade, helping Jaguar Land Rover achieve net zero carbon across its products, operations and supply chain by 2039. - It is available with a choice of efficient mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains and four, five or seven-seat interiors across Standard and Long Wheelbase body designs. A pure-electric Range Rover – the first all-electric Land Rover – will join the line-up in 2024. - The extended Range plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrains provide CO2 emissions below 30g/km, with a WLTP certified pure-electric driving range of up to 100km (62 miles). They deliver an expected real-world pure-electric driving range of up to 80km (50 miles) – enough for typical Range Rover customers to complete up to 75 per cent of trips using electric power only - MLA-Flex can accommodate internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and 100 per cent electric powertrains. It represents the next step in Land Rover's simplified architecture strategy as part of the move to deliver greater powertrain flexibility Original Source : https://media.jaguarlandrover.com/news/2021/10/new-range-rover-world-premiere-breathtaking-modernity-peerless-refinement-and - The purely electric successor to the Jaguar XJ is also to be based on this platform – this was announced for 2020, but has not been presented to date. However, the electric limousine is likely to come onto the market before the purely electric Range Rover, after all, Jaguar is to become a pure electric vehicle brand from 2025. Whether these systems will bear any relation to those used by BMW's current EVs – or indeed Jaguar's own I-Pace – is unclear, but it is almost certain that an electric Range Rover would feature two driven axles and have similar power figures to the most potent combustion car. Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2024-range-rover-ev-bmw-ix-rival-could-get-fcev-option NEW 2022 RANGE ROVER OFFICIALLY UNWRAPPED AT LONDON EVENT - Around three months after launch, these will be joined by a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid option with a new 38.2kWh battery that has a WLTP-certified electric range of 62 miles, giving the Range Rover one of the longest electric ranges of any PHEV on sale. The new ‘Extended Range' PHEV variant, based on a six-cylinder engine for the first time, offers combined outputs of either 434bhp and 457lb ft or 503bhp and 516lb ft, and is estimated to be capable of covering 75% of all journeys with the engine off, according to Land Rover's research. It is also equipped with 50kW charging capacity, so an 80% charge can be achieved in less than an hour, while a brake regeneration system helps top up the battery – which is located under the floor for optimal weight distribution – when on the move. Moving up to the P530 with V8 bumps that up to $139,300, or $145,000 in seven-seat long-wheelbase configuration. The premium Autobiography spec of that higher trim costs $174,800 for the SWB, or $177,200 for the LWB. A First Edition tops the Range range at $182,000. Original Source : https://driving.ca/auto-news/news/2022-range-rover-sees-by-sleek-redesign-to-be-followed-by-2023-phev Your Tesla is arriving now | Uber Newsroom - Today, it goes electric: Hertz will make up to 50,000 fully electric Teslas available for drivers to rent by 2023, exclusively for drivers using the Uber network in the US. This is the largest expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) on a mobility platform in North America and one of the largest globally, marking another step towards Uber's zero-emissions goal. - Starting November 1, drivers can rent Teslas through Hertz's rental program in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Washington, DC, with a nationwide expansion in the following weeks. This will expose more consumers to the EV experience than ever, as riders who use Uber start seeing Teslas more frequently throughout the holidays. - Tesla rentals will start out at $334 a week and fall to $299 or lower as the program gets underway. This includes insurance and maintenance and is the best deal available in the market today for drivers looking to rent a Tesla. For the initial launch period, Hertz requires that drivers have at least a 4.7-star rating and have completed at least 150 trips to be eligible. - While most drivers who use Uber own their cars, many don't. That's why Hertz has worked with Uber to offer vehicle rental options since 2016. Original Source : https://www.uber.com/newsroom/hertztesla/ MERCEDES BETS ENTRY-LEVEL EV BUYERS WILL ACCEPT SHORTER RANGE - Kallenius is betting consumers will accept shorter driving ranges for cheaper models as prices for key materials rise. - The world's biggest luxury-car maker will use lithium-iron-phosphate batteries for its next generation of models like the EQA and EQB from 2024 and 2025, Chief Executive Officer Ola Kallenius said in an interview in Atlanta. - Most of the auto industry relies on nickel and cobalt in lithium-ion batteries to boost electric car performance. Yet supplies of both materials are constrained. Nickel, which helps provide power and range, is also prone to fire, a risk the industry is spending billions to control. - Mercedes-Benz will shift to cheaper but less powerful batteries to contain soaring prices for some metals in its range of entry-level models. - CATL also supplies the nickel-based batteries in the Mercedes EQS. CATL and Mercedes have an agreement that includes LFP batteries using CATL's “cell-to-pack” engineering, which saves on weight and cost by integrating cells directly into a battery pack. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   LUXURY TESLA USED BY PRINCE CHARLES GOES ON SALE FOR £82,000   - A top-of-the range electric-powered Tesla that was used by Prince Charles has gone on the market. The six-month-old Tesla Model S with just 7,000 miles on the clock is on the market for £82,500 with no special premium added for its Royal pedigree. It is believed that it was loaned by Tesla to Charles' household to try out as an environmentally form of transport in addition to his electric Jaguar I-Pace.   - It is believed that he loved the car so much that he got the loan period extended before handing it back to Tesla.   - It is now being sold by luxury car dealers Castle Motors who only refer in the small print on their website to it having been used by Charles.   - Charles was first spotted in the Tesla Model S in February this year when he was visiting his father Prince Philip at the King Edward VII Hospital in London.   - Charles who has championed environmental concerns for decades reportedly first had a test drive in a Tesla in 2016 on his Scottish estate in Ayrshire. He was shown around the car by Kimbal Musk, the brother of Tesla chief executive and Silicon Valley magnate Elon Musk, who sits on the board of the American car company. The Prince was said to have personally hosted Mr Musk and his fiancée over several days at Dumfries House.   Original Source : https://getpocket.com/read/3380371177   AUDI TO UNVEIL ITS TESLA-FIGHTING ELECTRIC CAR FROM ARTEMIS PROJECT AT IAA   - Audi is preparing to unveil the first vehicle developed by its new Artemis project, a more nimble startup-like group within the automaker to create more efficient electric vehicles that will compete with Tesla. The first Artemis EV is expected to be unveiled at IAA in Munich in September, according to German reports.   - Last year, the German automaker announced the creation of a new group called Artemis to “develop an efficient electric car platform with the first model to come to market by 2024.” The Artemis initiative was started by Audi CEO Markus Duesmann with the goal to “develop a pioneering model for Audi quickly and unbureaucratically.”   - It's possible that the timeline to production gets updated at the event, but for now, the first Artemis vehicle is not expected to hit the market for another two to three years.   Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/07/12/audi-to-unveil-tesla-fighting-artemis-project-iaa/   JAGUAR DEFENDS KILLING THE NEW XJ   - When Thierry Bollore took the reins at Jaguar Land Rover last September, he made a bold and, at the time, controversial decision: the death of the next generation Jaguar XJ that was to be reborn as an all-electric flagship sedan. Testing was in the advanced stages for this hopeful Mercedes EQS rival but Bollore had a different outlook.   - Bollore concluded that the new XJ was already outdated in some critical areas and therefore made no business sense to launch it. Starting from scratch would be the smarter long-term solution.   - Bollore instead revealed a radical plan he calls Reimagine that will see Jaguar turning into an all-electric and ultra-luxurious brand by 2025.   - As for the future of Jag's only existing EV, the I-Pace, Bollore confirmed it'll continue to receive regular updates and "will still be around in 2025, though it won't be part of the new model portfolio."   Original Source : https://carbuzz.com/news/jaguar-defends-killing-the-new-xj     SAMSUNG AND TESLA SIGN A HALF A BILLION DOLLARS DEAL FOR CYBERTRUCK CAMERAS   - Future Tesla Cybertruck owners will reportedly have their rearview ‘mirrors' powered by Samsung Electro-Mechanics. The latter company has apparently struck a deal with Tesla worth $436 million, and as a result, Samsung will reportedly supply the biggest EV manufacturer in the USA with its camera modules.   - The prototype vehicle showcased on stage wasn't equipped with conventional rearview mirrors, but instead, it used an array of cameras connected to the dashboard's displays. The production model shouldn't be all that different from the original prototype, and these reports further confirm that the Cybertruck will have a mirrorless design.   - The Korean tech giant has supplied Tesla with other EV-related technologies before, including batteries, and reports indicate that the new PixCell LED headlamp developed by Samsung will also be used by Tesla for its future EVs.   Original Source : https://www.sammobile.com/news/samsung-tesla-sign-half-a-billion-dollars-deal-cybertruck-cameras   IS THE ARMY WARMING UP TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN ITS FLEET?   - The U.S. Army is wading into the murky waters of fielding electric vehicles, and industry stands ready to make that happen, but it's been difficult for the experienced commercial world to convince the hesitant service to take the plunge.   - When it comes to combat vehicles like Abrams tanks, Stryker combat vehicles and Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, “I'm not sure we're going fully electric any time soon,” Brig. Gen. Glenn Dean, the program executive officer for ground combat systems, told Defense News in an interview in Warren, about a 50-minute drive from GM's proving ground.   - Dean said the Army might initially prefer a hybrid power option.   - While fully electric combat vehicles may be a tougher sell to the Army, the tactical wheeled vehicle fleet might be a promising place to start.   - That GM Defense converted its Infantry Squad Vehicle into a fully electric vehicle in just 12 weeks is evidence of that possibility.   - GM Defense plans to base its eLRV design off its yet-to-be publicly debuted Hummer EV chassis, a vehicle of which the company is hoping to build millions.    The Hummer EV features a 200-kilowatt hour battery using Ultium technology. It has three drive units and is a 1,000-horsepower vehicle.   - GM Defense plans to offer a purely electric vehicle for eLRV. But one option, to add a layer of comfort, would be to include an electric-powered range extender — “a smoking patch,” as one company battery engineer put it.   Original Source : https://www.defensenews.com/land/2021/07/12/is-the-army-warming-up-to-electric-vehicles-in-its-fleet/?utm_source=pocket_mylist   VOLVO'S ELECTRIC BRAND POLESTAR TO CHRONICLE THE PRECEPT SEDAN'S PRODUCTION PROCESS IN A YOUTUBE DOCUMENTARY SERIES   - The Precept electric sedan from Volvo's electric brand Polestar was originally slated for full-scale production in late 2020, but now we expect the company will launch the futuristic sedan as a 2023 model.   - Staying true to Polestar's pledge of transparency, the company is releasing an entire YouTube documentary series, which will chronicle the design process, development and production for the Precept EV concept. The "Precept: From Concept to Car" documentary series is an endeavor to reveal the variety of elements that go into the ideation and development process of a new vehicle.   - The first webisode is titled "The Concept'' and was released last week. The first installment offers viewers a quick behind-the-scenes look at the different views and thought processes the electric carmaker has to take into consideration.   - Although Polestar has not revealed the technical specifications of the Precept sedan yet, it's expected that the car will get a dual-motor setup and deliver around 400 miles of range, which will rival Tesla's flagship Model S.   Original Source : https://www.futurecar.com/4735/Volvos-Electric-Brand-Polestar-to-Chronicle-the-Precept-Sedans-Production-Process-in-a-YouTube-Documentary-Series   NIU LAUNCHES ALL-NEW ELECTRIC KQI3 KICK SCOOTER FOR £339   - Global electric mobility innovator NIU is delighted to launch the brand-new KQi3 electric kick scooter in the UK as the company's first product in the booming micromobility sector. By 2045, the researchers say, internal combustion engine vehicles will total less than 1% of new car sales globally. The predictions come from consulting firm Ernst & Young. EY's Mobility Lens Forecaster study used a neural network to examine “consumer behavior, regulatory trends, technology evolution (vehicle and ecosystem) and manufacturers' announced strategies” in making its predictions.  Europe will go first, EY says. “The latest predictions show that by 2028 EV sales in Europe will surpass those of other powertrains, a trend that will be repeated in China by 2033 and in the US by 2036.”   - The COVID-19 pandemic contributes significantly to the AI's predictions. “Many people who had rejected ownership in lieu of ridesharing and public transport have reassessed in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic,” EY explains. An earlier study published last November showed that “almost one-third of non-car owners planned to buy a car in the next six months (19% plan to buy new, 12 % used cars), and about half of those are millennials.”   Original Source : https://www.kbb.com/car-news/study-evs-will-be-majority-of-sales-by-2033/   GERMAN ELECTION PRIMER – FIGHT OVER COMBUSTION ENGINE PHASE-OUT HEATS UP   Original Source : https://www.cleanenergywire.org/news/german-election-primer-fight-over-combustion-engine-phase-out-heats     QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   What's your ideal stop time on a long distance road trip? Hør med når vi giver en status på Jaguar XJ, den Mercedes 124 Cabriolet som Thomas jagtede og købte, og der er nyt om en forsvunden Saab, og måske endda en tilføjelse til youngtimerflåden.Undervejs når vi, udover at få gjort kål på to flasker Østrigsk Spätburgunder, også omkring fordelene ved at handle med en sand hædersmand, en bildepression og hvordan den kureres, og et gammelt bilblad. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ALL-ELECTRIC MERCEDES-BENZ EQA NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER "The all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQA is now on sale, with the entry-level EQA 250 Sport priced from £40,495 on-the-road including the plug-in car grant* (£43,495 excluding PiCG). The EQA 250 AMG Line is available from £41,995 (£44,995 excluding PiCG)." EQA is newest member of the Mercedes-EQ family and is the first all-electric compact car from the brand Two trim lines available: Sport and AMG Line The 66.5 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a range of up to 263 miles On sale now, with first UK deliveries expected Spring 2021 100 kW DC on-board charger allowing it to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in around 40 minutes 8.9 0-62mph   Helpfully, the UK website actually says NOT on sale yet. So press release department not talking to sales department?   For Germany electrive says: "In their home market, Mercedes gives a starting price at €47,540.50 As this results in a netlist price of less than 40,000 euros, the EQA is eligible for the innovation premium of 9,570 euros (federal share: 6,000 euros, manufacturer share: 3,000 euros plus 19% VAT) in Germany. The EQA would then cost 37,970.50 euros, including VAT there."   And they explain why it's on sale in the UK, but not on sale: "the EQA’s eligibility for the plug-in car grant is still pending, awaiting final confirmation from the UK Government’s Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. Until final confirmation the vehicle will not even appear on the portal, so no applications can be made."   https://www.mercedes-benz.co.uk/passengercars/mercedes-benz-cars/models/eqa/explore.html?pid=passengercars_eqabanner_eqaExplore_cta1_int_040221   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/04/mercedes-eqa-now-available-to-order-in-germany/   DAIMLER TO BE RENAMED MERCEDES-BENZ DURING HUGE CORPORATE SHAKEUP " Daimler will be renamed Mercedes-Benz as the result of a massive corporate shift in strategy. In a move designed to focus on a zero-emissions, software-driven future, Daimler’s Supervisory board and Board of Management agreed to evaluate plans for a separate listing of Daimler Truck. " according to Motor1: !this move makes quite a lot of sense because rather unsurprisingly, each respective company knows best how to serve its customer base. We can already see this with Daimler Truck, as the industry giant already stands as the world’s largest truck and bus producer in Europe, North America, Asia, and many other areas of planet earth."   "Daimler will create the world’s largest standalone commercial vehicle manufacturer as it splits its truck and Mercedes-Benz car businesses into two public companies. It will list its trucks arm separately, paving the way for one of the largest German flotations this year and allowing both companies to focus on different emissions-free technologies." according to Financial Times: "While Mercedes-Benz has ploughed several billion euros into battery-electric technology, Daimler Trucks has taken a much broader approach.          The two Daimler companies’ largest markets are also diverging. The largest chunk of Daimler Trucks’ revenues come from the US followed by Europe, whereas China is by far Mercedes’ largest and most profitable market."   https://www.ft.com/content/64910c9a-75c4-4e7b-9ca6-2d35c009498d   GERMANY HITS 21.7% PLUGIN SHARE IN JANUARY "Germany, Europe’s largest auto market, hit 21.7% plugin electric vehicle share in January, up over 3× from January 2021. This is already substantially above 2020’s breakout annual share of 13.5% and not far off December’s extraordinary peak of 26.6%. Overall auto sales volumes were down 31% in January 2021, with petrol combustion vehicles dropping more than 50% in volume year-on-year." says CleanTechnica: "We have to assume that the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault ZOE were once again duelling for the BEV lead in January, and that the Hyundai Kona and Volkswagen ID.4 were up there also."   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/02/03/germany-hit-21-7-plugin-share-in-january-up-over-3x-year-on-year/   FORD DOUBLES ITS INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES "While Ford’s last quarter sales were down $2.3billion, there’s a spark of hope in the automaker’s plans. Ford also announced a doubling of its investment in electrified vehicles to $22 billion through to 2025 and an increase in its total investment in automated driving to $7 billion from $4 billion." says NExt Green Car: "The Mach-E is Ford’s first purpose-built electric car but Ford has already announced two other fully-electric vehicles. We can expect the e-Transit van, which will be launched later this year, and Ford is planning an electric version of F-150 for 2022."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9083/ford-doubles-its-investment-in-electrified-vehicles/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER TO OUTLINE EV PUSH DURING INVESTOR DAY "Jaguar Land Rover will disclose its future electrification plans during an investor day at the end of the month. JLR needs to inject momentum into its Jaguar brand and accelerate its push into electric cars as governments introduce tougher measures to reduce climate-changing CO2 emissions. Rumors have circulated in the motoring press that the automaker could make the Jaguar brand all-electric." according to Automotive News EUrope: "To preserve cash during the COVID-19 crisis, JLR delayed plans to launch a Jaguar XJ full-electric sedan"   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/jaguar-land-rover-outline-ev-push-during-investor-day   XPENG P7 GETS A COBALT-FREE LFP BATTERY " the Xpeng P7, now homologated with a cobalt-free LFP battery made by CATL. Remember that recently the Xpeng G3 also got a cobalt-free battery made by CATL." reports PushEVs: "The Xpeng G3 is already on sale in Norway and soon it will be joined by the P7.  If you want to know how serious an automaker is about electric cars, check the battery technology they use. While NIO and Li Auto are the Chinese automakers currently getting most of the media’s attention, I think that is BYD and Xpeng the ones with the best potential to grow."   G3 uses CHAdeMO.   "After sending the first batch of the G3 to Norway in last December, Xpeng is now sending the second batch of over 200 units. The Xpeng G3 is currently on sale in Norway with a 66 kWh NCM 811 battery from CATL, a WLTP range of 451 km and a starting price of 358.000 NOK (34.649 euros). When we heard about the Hyundai Kona EV and the Kia Niro EV, we went off to try sitting in them and were pretty much sold after watching a Youtube video made in the UK.   HOW IT'S GOIGN: I tried to find something better, or something used and cheaper, but eventually I found a dealer 250 miles away that was having a sale on E-Niros. Going up to buy it on the train and then driving home in a winter storm while needing to recharge was an adventure. That was about a year ago. Since then she is our car of choice. If we charge it to 90%, we can do two grocery trips without worrying about range.   STEPHEN MURDOCH How it started: Fully charged YouTube videos. How it's going: 24kwh Nissan Leaf. What I'd like: Rivian R1S or Porsche Taycan. Best I can realistically hope for: Nissan Leaf with a bigger battery.   LUKE   How it started: Got a gas guzzling Jaguar as a courtesy car, and it had a feature that told me how much fuel certain features used in the car. Aka heated seats, heater and radio. This got me really thinking about how we use fuel and energy in our transport.   How it’s going: drive a petrol Audi A4, currently saving up for a BMW 3 series plug in hybrid. This has 37 miles electric range which is more than enough for my daily commute, and yet has a petrol engine for holiday journeys and days out. And hopefully after that, it’s full electric and goodbye fossils.     GRANTON SMITH My interest in Hybrids began when I was shopping for my first new car in about 15 years ago... I was really keen on a Prius, but it wasn't meant to be - I ended up getting into a Diesel VW Golf, because it was "greener" due to lower fuel consumption... Liars! (I'm sad about that now!)   Again about 5yrs ago I was super keen on a PHEV Mitsubishi Outlander to replace our family car. But alas, the Mrs didn't like the seats (among other things), so the PHEV missed the cut.   How it's going: Tesla model 3 ordered... It's on the boat soon (hopefully!!). Zappi 2 on its way, solar installed and generating and I'm finally ready to drive my own EV!! I can't wait!!!

It’s a totally free marketlace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E EASILY GOES 300+ MILES IN NORWAY "Ford is now testing its hot new Mustang Mach-e electric crossover/SUV in Europe. Naturally, the #1 place to take an electric vehicle is Norway, where approximately 70% of new vehicle sales are now electric (fully electric or plugin hybrid). That’s where Ford has been playing around with the Mustang Mach-E, and the results are looking good" says CleanTechnica: "ord shared that the “all-wheel drive model with a targeted WLTP driving range of 335 miles exceeded energy-efficiency expectations, travelling 301 miles non-stop from Oslo to Trondheim, finishing the journey with 14 per cent battery capacity remaining.” Not too shabby, and that’s not even the extended-range trim, which Ford expects to get a WLTP range rating of 379 miles."   Ford press release says: “Latest testing shows charge time has improved by nearly 30 per cent from early estimates, reaching an average of 73 miles of range within 10 minutes using IONITY fast charging, when equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive.”   The UK homepage at ford.co.uk still has the old time of 58 miles. And 370 miles (Model 3 LR is 348, for £3,000 less, 75kWh battery). 150kW peak charge rate. 99kWh gross.   And if we're playing THIS game, the Model 3 can add 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes.   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/18/ford-mustang-mach-e-easily-goes-300-miles-in-norway/   PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO TURNED INTO SAFETY CAR "Porsche just introduced a new all-electric safety car in its Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland series, which this weekend had a 45-minute opening race on the Circuit de la Sarthe, as part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France." says InsideEVs: "Meet the Porsche Taycan Turbo version, retrofitted to handle the job, but at the same time remain street legal. In fact, while the racing cars were transported on trucks, the Porsche Taycan Turbo safety car drove on its own from Germany to Le Mans on public roads. With 500 kW of power, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds and more than 400 km (250 miles) of range, the Porsche Taycan Turbo is a pretty good choice for the purpose. It's not the first plug-in safety car, as several years ago BMW introduced the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 (and i8 Roadster) safety cars for the Formula E series, but it's one of the first that's all-electric."   https://insideevs.com/news/444796/porsche-taycan-turbo-safety-car   LUCID AIR MIGHT HAVE JUST BEAT TESLA’S PLAID MODEL S ROUND LAGUNA SECA "EV startup Lucid has only just announced its debut car, the Air, but is already setting its sights on lap records currently held by Tesla’s Model S tri-motor Plaid Edition. According to a trackside sleuth who goes by The Kilowatts on Twitter, Lucid was putting its tri-motor powertrain through its paces, and appeared to post a claimed 1 minute 33 seconds lap time at Laguna Seca racetrack in California. Scroll down for trackside footage of the Air in action." says The Next Web: "ccording to The Kilowatts, they recorded the Lucid Air’s time using their own stopwatch. Of course, this is an unofficial time, but on a racetrack where lap times are separated by fractions of a second, the Lucid seems to have a comfortable buffer over Tesla’s Model S Plaid Edition, which completed a hot lap of Laguna Seca in 1:36.55 last year. Lucid has been quite tight-lipped about its tri-motor setup, and the not-so-subtle leak of a Tesla trouncing lap time at its local racetrack is certainly a warning shot of sorts. Bear in mind, Tesla Battery day is next week, and one of the many things that could be announced is Tesla’s tri-motor Plaid Model S."   https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/09/18/the-lucid-air-might-have-just-beat-teslas-plaid-model-s-round-laguna-seca/   FIRST TESLA MEGAPACK DEPLOYED IN UK TO HELP KEEP THE LIGHTS ON "In July Tesla Megapack and Tesla Autobidder AI entered the UK market. Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and Harmony Energy have joined forces to launch their first UK battery system. This week, for the first time in the UK, a project using giant Tesla Inc. batteries was used to help balance supply and demand in Britain’s electricity market." according to Tesmanian: "National Grid spent 718 million pounds ($932 million) balancing the network from March to July to cope with low demand and high supply of renewable generation—39% higher than usual, according to BNN Bloomberg. A new computer system used by National Grid has allowed burgeoning technologies like batteries to be used in the balancing market more easily. The 7.5-megawatt Holes Bay energy storage plant in Dorset in southwest England is operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures BV and Harmony Energy Ltd."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-megapack-giant-batteries-are-being-use-in-uk-for-the-1st-time-to-keep-lights-on   TESLA REINTRODUCES ‘ENHANCED AUTOPILOT’ "Tesla has reintroduced the ‘Enhanced Autopilot’ option – offering a cheaper alternative to the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package for existing owners. Finally, the automaker ended up making the Autopilot’s Autosteer and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control standard on its vehicles and bundled the rest of the features into its ‘Full Self-Driving package’ (FSD)." according to Electrek: "The automaker started selling the FSD package for $5,000 and it has gradually increased the price to now $8,000 – following an update earlier this summer. It is leaving Tesla owners with limited and expensive choices. Now Tesla has reintroduced the option of an Enhanced Autopilot package for $4,000 – breaking down some of the features previously only available in the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package;. It’s the same Enhanced Autopilot package that Tesla used to offer and includes all the features that don’t require the automaker’s latest onboard self-driving computer."   EA is: Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon.   https://electrek.co/2020/09/19/tesla-reintroduce-enhanced-autopilot-alternative-full-self-driving/   CHINESE CARMAKERS LAG BEHIND IN NEV QUALITY: SURVEY "China is the world's largest market for new energy vehicles, but Chinese carmakers still lag behind international companies in terms of vehicle quality, according to a JD Power China study released Thursday." says China Daily: "The study also finds that international brands perform better in the exterior, infotainment system, seats, powertrain, and interior categories, while Chinese startup brands like Nio exceed in driving experience, battery and charging. new energy vehicle owners not only expect technological and smart in-vehicle features, but also require high quality. That means carmakers must deliver vehicles with both high quality and advanced technology. In August, sales of new energy vehicles reached 109,000, up 25.8 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers."   http://www.chinadailyglobal.com/a/202009/17/WS5f6328eea31024ad0ba7a387.html   MERCEDES EQS SPIED REMINDING US IT WILL TECHNICALLY BE A HATCHBACK "Now that the new S-Class is out and about, we’re gradually turning our attention to its electric equivalent in the vast Mercedes range. Unlike the EQ C based on the GLC, the EQS will distance itself from the S-Class by riding on a dedicated electric car platform. We can say the same thing about the styling as while the two crossovers have similar proportions and some common design traits, the EQS looks far more futuristic than the traditional Daimler flagship." reports Motor1.com: "A fresh batch of spy shots from the Nürburgring reminds us Mercedes is taking a more practical approach compared to the Taycan and E-Tron GT. While the Porsche and Audi EVs are sedans, the EQS will be a hatchback / liftback as denoted by the visible outline of the large tailgate in the adjacent images. The Tesla Model S has a similar setup, whereas the electric Jaguar XJ and BMW i7 will be sedans judging by the most recent spy photos."   https://www.motor1.com/news/369809/mercedes-benz-vision-eqs-frankfurt/   HIGH-POWER CHARGING TRUCKS BECOME MOBILE POWER SOURCES From Track Experiences to the Ice Experience in Finland, the Taycan is now an integral part of Porsche’s customer driving programmes. However, not everywhere provides the adequate infrastructure for charging the electric sports car en masse. Meet Porsche’s innovative solution: a fleet of stand-alone, high-power charging trucks that offer mobile charging on demand. The Hungaroring in Budapest was the venue for a special Porsche Track Experience just a few days ago, where “Soul on Track” offered customers the opportunity to test the Taycan on a circuit. Such driving events present organisers with a particular challenge, however: when a large number of Taycan cars need to be charged quickly and simultaneously, the local infrastructure isn’t always up to the job. Without a satisfactory solution on the market, Porsche wasted no time in creating its own. With a power rating of 3.2 megawatts, ten Taycan can be charged simultaneously at maximum speed. The battery buffer storage unit has a capacity of 2.1 megawatt hours. This means that up to 30 Taycan in total can be charged by the energy storage unit. The latter is generally recharged with renewable power from the power grid. For example, during a three-week customer event in the Portuguese city of Portimao in November 2019, the power came directly from the nearby photovoltaic systems. The trailers can be recharged very quickly – under good conditions, they are fully charged again within four hours.   https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020/company/porsche-high-power-charging-trucks-mobile-power-sources-22285.html     You can listen to all 893 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #839    Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 15th July 2020. NISSAN ARIYA REVEALED CCS PLUG LIQUID COOLED   ⚡ 63kWh / 223 miles ⚡ 87kWh / 310 miles ⚡ Both FWD or AWD ⚡ 130kW+ charging ⚡ 22kW on-board charging Astonished face ⚡ 0-60mph 5.1secs (e-4orce version) ⚡ OTA Updates ⚡ From £40k/$40k. Arrives 2021   What do the British Press have to say?  "The new Ariya features concept car looks and is massive technological leap over the Leaf, thanks to an all-new platform, which will be shared with Joint Venture partners, Renault and Mitsubishi. Unlike the Leaf which has effectively stood on its own, the Ariya uses a scalable platform optimised specifically for electric cars. Without the need to house an internal combustion engine, passenger space is elongated and the cockpit floor can be flat, with the batteries packed underneath." says car magazine: "The twin electric motor, all-wheel-drive Ariya models will feature Nissan’s most advanced all-wheel control technology, e-4orce. It has four-wheel drive and control. Nissan says the 0-62mph time ranges between 7.6 seconds (for the two-wheel drive Ariya 63kWh) and 5.1 seconds for the 87kWh Performance model.   What about the US media? "The dashboard has a pleasingly minimalist design that incorporates two large 12.3-inch screens, one for the gauge cluster and another for the central infotainment display. A simple row of touch-capacitive climate-control buttons are nicely integrated into the wood trim of the dash. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions are standard." says Car and Driver: "A more advanced version of Nissan's ProPilot driver-assistance system, called ProPilot 2.0, will be offered on the Ariya. It allows for hands-free driving in certain circumstances and can execute lane changes. Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and other driver-assistance features are standard. The Ariya will go on sale in Japan first, sometime in the middle of next year. It will reach the U.S. later in 2021, with a starting price of around $40,000 that will likely reach closer to $50,000 when optioned up with the larger battery pack and all-wheel drive."   And the Tech press, let's look to The Verge: "Despite being tech-forward as it comes, the Ariya lacks many of the idiosyncratic (and slightly ridiculous) flourishes that Nissan likes to stuff into its concept vehicles, like a virtual assistant that’s also a koi fish, or a fake engine noise that sounds like a musical version of THX’s Deep Note. Still, it’s an EV, so it has to have ultra-thin headlights a la EV startups like Byton and Faraday Future, and brake lights that stretch across the rear like Tesla’s Cybertruck. The car’s HVAC system can be accessed via a set of capacitive haptic switches that are integrated into the wood paneling underneath the center screen that offer a similar feeling to mechanical switches by vibrating when touched."   The Pros and Cons from Push EVs Biggest pros Nissan has finally adopted CCS as its fast charging standard in North America and Europe. The optional 22 kW on-board also demonstrates that the automaker is starting to listen to its European customers. TMS (Thermal Management System) with active-cooling is finally here. Different combinations of motors and batteries   Biggest cons Bad efficiency. Nissan is still far behind Korean automakers when it comes to efficiency. The Nissan Ariya is even less efficient than the recently introduced BMW iX3… If the Nissan Ariya had the same efficiency, the 87 kWh battery would be enough for 541 km (336 miles) in WLTP, instead of 500 km (311 miles). It’s at least a year away. This electric car will face really tough competition and its specs might not look good by then.   https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/nissan/ariya/   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a33311844/2022-nissan-ariya-ev-revealed/   https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/15/21324125/nissan-ariya-electric-suv-crossover-specs-price   https://pushevs.com/2020/07/15/nissan-introduces-the-electric-crossover-ariya/   NISSAN TRANSITIONS TO CCS FOR US AND EUROPE "When the 2021 Nissan Ariya launches in the US and Europe next year, it will come equipped with a CCS (Combo) inlet, as the brand moves away from CHAdeMO in those markets. The Nissan LEAF and the Mitsubishi Outlander plug in hybrid are currently the only two EVs available in the US that use CHAdeMO, and the LEAF doesn't appear in Nissan's future plans." reports Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs: "When Nissan brought the LEAF to market back in late 2010, it was the first mass-produces electric vehicle, and the SAE hadn't established the Combined Charging System standard yet. In fact, it wasn't until June of 2013 when the first public CCS charging station was opened in Wolfsburg, Germany. Also, over the past few years as Japanese and South Korean automakers introduced their new electric offerings, one by one they came equipped with CCS inlets. Kia's first electric offering the Soul EV used the CHAdeMO standard. However, in 2019 when the 2nd generation Soul EV was introduced, it switched to CCS. Kia also uses CCS for the Niro EV. Honda's only all-electric offering, the Clarity also uses CCS, as does the Hyundai Kona Electric."   "The eventual outcome of the war now seems plain, but the battles will drag on for a while. Nissan will continue to use CHAdeMO in Japan, where the standard dominates. Most new DC fast chargers in the US seem to be going in with both sets of connectors, though it’s unclear how long that trend will last." says ChargedEVs: "Moloughney also points out that the CHAdeMO Association recently introduced CHAdeMO 3.0, also known as Chaoji, which may become the new DC fast charging standard in China and/or Japan."   https://insideevs.com/news/433929/nissan-switches-to-ccs-in-us-europe/amp/   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/the-war-is-over-nissan-to-switch-from-chademo-to-ccs-in-us-and-europe/   JAGUAR XJ ELECTRIC SEDAN DEBUT PUSHED TO LATE 2021 "Jaguar's been testing prototypes of the coming all-electric XJ sedan for a while now, an example we saw earlier this year testing in the cold having reached an advanced stage. The plan had been to launch the battery-powered flagship fastback this year, with sales to commence early 2021." says Autoblog: "A report in The Sunday Times says that plan has changed, Jaguar pushing the XJ back to the third quarter of next year while the automaker focuses on its finances and its most profitable models. The site FormaCar reports, "The presentation date on the official website now reads, 'October 2021,'" but we haven't found that XJ-specific page. In response to questions about the Jaguar canceling the XJ, a spokesperson responded, "Our engineers continue to work on the next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ. We remain committed to our long-term strategy and our product portfolio remains the same, but the unprecedented situation will inevitably have an impact on our immediate plans.""   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/15/jaguar-xj-electric-car-debut-delayed-coronavirus/   BIDEN PLANS MASSIVE ELECTRIC CAR PUSH "Details about Joe Biden’s environmental plans are beginning to emerge, and they include a massive push for electric cars and trucks. According to Car and Driver, part of the plan is a program that offers financial incentives for Americans to trade in their gas guzzlers and replace them with efficient electric vehicles, but here’s the kicker: The incentives will only apply to cars manufactured in the United States." repotrs Clean Technica: "Exactly what “manufactured in the United States” means is not clear at this time, but it will most definitely benefit Tesla, whose vehicles can boast some of the highest US content of any cars sold in America. It will also be a boon to Volkswagen, which is converting part of its Chattanooga factory to make cars based on the MEB platform. Hyundai and KIA, however, who make some very competitive electric cars, would be left out in the cold. Biden’s proposal includes money to install a half million electric car chargers all across America as well as financial assistance to help car makers convert their factories to electric vehicle production."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/15/biden-plans-massive-electric-car-push/   SKODA ENYAQ ELECTRIC SUV SPIED WEARING DECEPTIVE CAMOUFLAGE "while the Enyaq and VW ID.4 will share VW Group's MEB electric-only platform underpinnings, it'll feature distinct styling as it's the production version of the automaker's Vision iV concept the company revealed last year." says MOtor1: "Skoda is expected to offer two versions of the model – one with a single motor and one with two. The two-motor model could produce up to 302 horsepower (225 kilowatts). However, those looking for the most range will likely gravitate toward the single-motor model, which rumors suggest will offer 311 miles (500 kilometers) of range. Production for the Skoda Enyaq should start later this year. Sales and deliveries will likely begin in the first half of 2021. Show #804   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon RICHARD LUPINSKY   'ONE MILLION MILE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY IS NOW 'READY TO PRODUCE' "The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has said the Ningde-based manufacturing firm has the capability of making a battery pack that can last for about 16 years, powering an electric vehicle for 1.24 million miles." writes Newsweek: "According to the SCMP, CATL signed a two-year contract to supply batteries to Tesla in February this year, and its technology is set to be incorporated into the Model 3 range of vehicles being made at Musk's new gigafactory located in Shanghai."   On Elon: "We're getting along well and he's a fun guy. He's talking about cost all day long, and I'm making sure we have the solutions."   https://www.newsweek.com/tesla-elon-musk-one-million-mile-battery-ready-produce-chinese-partner-catl-says-1509293   FORD REVEALS ESCAPE PHEV PRICE, RANGE AND MORE FOR U.S. "Ford announced its first new plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. market, the Ford Escape PHEV, which earlier was launched in Europe as Ford Kuga PHEV. The Escape PHEV might be one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids and a major competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It will start at less than $35,000 (MSRP), before destination charge and an eligible federal tax credit of probably over $6,700." says InsideEVs: " The EPA-estimated all-electric range will be about 37 miles (59.5 km) so really not bad, although the RAV4 Prime is able to go up to 42 miles (67.6 km). The battery pack (14.4 kWh) is installed under the second-row seats."   Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer said: “The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency. The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats. Escape also has an additional 11 miles of all-electric driving range before it uses a drop of gas.”   https://insideevs.com/news/427357/ford-escape-phev-price-range-us/   VOLKSWAGEN REPLACES DIESS WITH RALF BRANDSTÄTTER FOR THE VW BRAND "Ralf Brandstätter is the Volkswagen brand's new CEO as a promotion over his previous role as the marque's chief operating officer. He takes over the role from Herbert Diess who is currently the CEO of both the VW brand and VW Group as a whole. " reports Motor1.com: "The company's board positions this change as letting Diess put a greater emphasis on running the business, rather than splitting his focus between two roles.  The shakeup comes amid VW having some problems in Europe. The company had to halt deliveries of the new Golf because of an issue with the software for the emergency call function – a mandated feature in Europe. The problem affected around 15,000 cars that the automaker had already delivered to customers.  There are also rumors about problems with the software suite in the company's forthcoming ID.3 electric car. The exact nature of the issue isn't clear, but elements within the system are allegedly not able to communicate correctly. There are reportedly over 10,000 technicians working to solve the problem."   Spiegel.de reports (Google Translate from German): "There is also a problem with the electric ID.3, with which VW wants to build a Golf successor in the mass market and establish an E series with billions of dollars in investment. The model from the Zwickau plant, which is to be ordered from mid-June, will initially only come with a slimmed-down range of functions. Reason: software delays."   https://www.motor1.com/news/427604/volkswagen-new-boss/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/vw-konzernchef-diess-gibt-fuehrung-der-kernmarke-ab-a-5a78ea2b-a531-4f94-b995-dae144216e5a   CHINA'S BYD IN TALKS TO SUPPLY JLR FROM UK BATERY PLANT "Chinese EV and battery specialist BYD is in talks with Jaguar Land Rover to supply automotive batteries from a UK plant, a source with knowledge of the situation said." writes Automotive News Europe: "JLR CEO Ralf Speth has previously said the UK needs its own battery cell production, but operated independently of JLR. The UK would be BYD’s first European battery cell factory but the company is also looking at other European locations, the source said. JLR currently sells the Jaguar I-Pace electric crossover, which is built by Magna Steyr in Austria. It plans to produce a full-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan at its Castle Bromwich factory in England."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/chinas-byd-talks-supply-jlr-uk-battery-plant   WIRELESS CHARGING UPDATE "Wireless parking places, if they work well with a variety of vehicles, are primed to be part of the gold rush. WiTricity's charging coils, which China chose for its national wireless standard in May, can reach parked electric sports cars and SUVs alike with clearance ranging from 4 in.–10 in." says CNBC: "Charging vehicles in motion is on the table with existing technology too, since the distance between a car's carriage and the road stays fairly constant. Fellow wireless charging company Qualcomm Halo, which WiTricity acquired last year, has built a 300-ft test track in France that can charge cars driving at highway speeds. And Israeli start-up Electreon is electrifying short stretches of road in Israel and Sweden. If automakers can settle on one standard technology, omnipresent, automatic charging stations would let electric vehicles go farther on smaller batteries, reminiscent of Tesla's imagined fuel-free planes. Hands-free charging also will grow more essential if cars get more autonomous, since they won't be able to plug themselves in."   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/researchers-work-on-the-next-generation-of-wireless-charging-for-evs.html   ALL-NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER The New Fiat 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback makes its debut today following the successful unveiling of the New 500 ‘la Prima’ convertible in March. The New 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback – including the fitment of the easyWallbox – is priced at £26,995, including PiCG. The lithium-ion batteries, with a capacity of 42kWh, give the New 500 a range of up to 199 miles in the WLTP cycle. To optimise charging time, the New 500 electric is equipped with an 85kW fast charge system. The New 500 also comes with a 11kW onboard AC charger. Sherpa mode optimises the available resources to reduce fuel consumption to a minimum -  maximum speed is limited to 50mph; accelerator response is managed in order to reduce energy consumption; and deactivation of both the climate control system and heated seats. The New 500 electric is the first FCA car to be equipped with the new UConnect 5 infotainment system, the connected platform designed for the future. Developed with the idea of providing customers with a completely new user experience, UConnect 5 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operating systems and can be used in wireless mode. My Remote: checks the battery charge level from a smartphone; schedule vehicle charging during the most convenient time periods; know the exact location of the car; lock and unlock the doors and set the climate control system.   MERCEDES GLA 250 E 2020 REVIEW Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e Coupé, CLA 250 e Shooting Brake and B 250 e plug-in hybrids are available to order now.  . The GLA with plug-in hybrid drive system will follow a few weeks later   "The new GLA 250 e is plug-in hybrid motoring at its best, and for many prospective buyers this could be the GLA to go for. Impressive all-electric running combines with surprisingly sporty yet economical hybrid drive when the petrol engine is brought into play." is how AutoExpress reviewed it: "Joining electrified versions of the latest CLA and CLA Shooting Brake in British Mercedes showrooms is the new GLA 250 e, which shapes up as a rival for plug-in hybrid versions of the latest BMW X1 and X2 and the Volvo XC40. Total system power stands at 215bhp and 450Nm, while the electric power is stored in a 15.6kWh battery. The GLA 250 e can recharge at 24kW."   38 miles on EV power, 86mph on the motor.   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/gla/352426/new-mercedes-gla-250-e-2020-review   The Mercedes B 250 e is now on sale, with first deliveries expected in late summer. It is only available with AMG Line Executive equipment grade or higher, so prices start from £35,280.   CHINA’S EV MARKET IS RECOVERING "In China, exactly 55,829 battery electric cars and 14,370 plug-in hybrids from local production were sold in May. The sales figures for so-called New Energy Vehicles were thus 25.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year, but 19.5 per cent higher than in April 2020." reports Chris Randall for electrive: "The best-selling electrified model in May was the Tesla Model 3: CPCA statistics show 11,095 units of the locally manufactured American electric sedan sold in China. That is a good three times as many as in April (3,635). However, sales of the Model 3 in April were also down sharply on March (10,160). Tesla itself probably contributed to the new high with a price reduction for the Model 3 Standard Range announced at the end of April. "   That price drop kept it in the window for Chinese subsidies. And what about the Long Range RWD Model 3 they started delivering at the end of May?   David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData: "This is the second consecutive monthly rise for the Chinese vehicle market, as it rebounds from sharp declines in the first quarter caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. China was first into the COVID-19 crisis and first out of it, so developments in China’s economy are being watched very closely."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/09/chinas-ev-market-is-recovering-sowly/   WOULD YOU SWAP TO AN ELECTRIC CAR IF THEY WERE £6,000 CHEAPER? Government could announce a scrappage scheme for only electric vehicles Motorists who scrap an old petrol or diesel car would get £6,000 off a new EV Plans could be announced next month, according to report from The Telegraph It mirrors plans in Germany that are part of a €130bn Covid-19 stimulus package EV buyers there will receive an industry and government-backed subsidy of €9k   "It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric." writes This Is Money: "The price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon."   Read more here: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8398385/Boris-Johnson-considering-slashing-prices-new-EVs-6-000.html   Add £3000 for the PiCG and that's £9000 off the price.   Fiona Howarth, chief executive at Octopus Electric Vehicles: "'Consumers who want to switch to greener driving can be put off by the more expensive initial outlay for an electric vehicle compared to petrol or diesel. But by reducing this cost, EVs will become more affordable and dramatically increase uptake. In 2019, around 100 people every day were losing their life due to poor air quality. The government can really make a difference and save lives by encouraging the switch to clean, electric cars."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 228 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #784   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th May 2020. AUDI E-TRON S POSSIBLY SPIED TESTING AT THE NURBURGRING "A new spy video shot at the Nürburgring shows what may very well be the E-Tron electric SUV in the hotter specification.  While we can’t be entirely sure this is indeed the high-performance version, this would make the most sense since it’s too early for Audi’s Mercedes EQC-rival to start preparing for a mid-cycle update." says Quattrodaily: "Of course, the biggest change has occurred underneath the familiar skin where Audi has added a third electric motor. Mounted at the back, it helps the E-Tron S models hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in four and a half seconds."   2021 AUDI E-TRON GT SPIED AT PORSCHE'S DEVELOPMENT CENTRE "You won’t need a crystal ball to figure out what the swirly camouflage is hiding since the E-Tron GT production model will remain faithful to the concept before it. Audi will be making some changes for the road-going car as the prototypes have conventional door handles and larger side mirrors. The front fascia might eschew the concept’s intricate grille design for something less flashy, but that’s about it." says Motor1.com: "Technical specifications should be quite similar to those of the Taycan, but we’re expecting Ingolstadt’s electric sedan to be a tad cheaper and possibly start at under $100,000. It remains to be seen whether Audi will follow Porsche’s approach by prioritizing the high-end versions before coming out with the lesser models. An official premiere is scheduled to take place towards the end of the year ahead and customer deliveries should commence early 2021. It will compete not just with its sister model from Stuttgart, but also the next-generation Jaguar XJ and the first-ever Mercedes EQS, not to mention the Tesla Model S."   https://www.motor1.com/photo/4998524/2021-audi-e-tron-gt-spy-photo/   LIGHTYEAR INKS DEAL FOR PRODUCTION OF LONG-RANGE EV'S SOLAR ROOF "Dutch startup Lightyear has secured a supplier for its long-range electric car's solar roof. Royal DSM will partner with Lightyear to scale up production of the roof system. The two companies will also look into solar-roof applications for other cars, as well as vans and buses, Lightyear said in a press release" according to Green Car Reports: "The roof consists of 53 square feet of solar cells protected by double-curved safety glass. Royal DSM will supply a back sheet that moves electrical connections behind the cells, freeing up more space for capturing sunlight. This will also reduce electrical losses, leading to a 3% gain in power output over other designs, the company claims. Lightyear was founded by members of a winning World Solar Challenge team, with the goal of applying solar technology to production electric cars. The Lightyear One electric car is aiming for 450 miles of range on the European WLTP cycle (which tends to be more optimistic than the U.S. EPA testing cycle). While the car does have a battery pack, as well as aerodynamic bodywork, it is designed to rely heavily on the solar roof to achieve that range."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128169_lightyear-inks-deal-for-production-of-long-range-ev-s-solar-roof   MUSK ANNOUNCES TESLA'S FULL SELF-DRIVING WILL COST $1000 MORE IN JULY "Tesla is raising the price of its "self-driving" option on its electric vehicles worldwide starting with a $1,000 (£820) hike. Founder Elon Musk tweeted that the price "will continue to rise" as its technology improves." according to BBC News: "The self-driving add-on will cost $8,000 when the price rise kicks in on 1 July."   Elon tweeted: ""The FSD price will continue to rise as the software gets closer to full self-driving capability with regulatory approval," Mr Musk said in a series of tweets on Monday. "[At] that point, the value of FSD is probably somewhere in excess of $100,000.""   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52703767   PAST PEAK OIL? INDUSTRY HIT BY WEAK DEMAND FINALLY FACES THREAT FROM ELECTRIC CARS "Oil companies may be facing uncertainty as the coronavirus pandemic triggers a collapse in demand for their products, but automakers are betting the crisis will help accelerate an electric future. With economies reeling from lockdowns to curb the virus, the sharpest plunge in oil prices in two decades has slashed the cost of filling up a tank of gas, eroding some of the incentive to make the switch to cleaner fuels."  writes Autoblog: "Looking ahead, cuts in capital spending forced upon energy companies as their revenues crumble could tighten supply enough to cause a spike in oil prices, making electric vehicles more attractive just as automakers ramp up production, analysts say. With fuel for road transport accounting for about half of all oil demand, the possibility of a faster-than-expected switch to EVs in the wake of the pandemic is one of the main reasons some forecasts for a peak have been brought forward. Global oil demand hit a record of just over 100 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2019."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/19/peak-oil-demand-wanes-electric-vehicles-rise/   RENAULT-NISSAN-MITSUBISHI TO UNVEIL STRATEGIC PLAN "Automakers Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi may unveil next week a new strategic plan to boost synergies and repair their troubled alliance as the coronavirus pandemic lashes the industry." according to the Economic Times. While Automotive NEws thinks that Nissan could be slowly backing out of Europe: "Europe accounts for only about one-tenth of Nissan's global business by volume and has "little prospects for growth and profitability," as one insider put it. Under the new working relationship with Renault, Nissan would take the lead in Europe on crossovers and SUVs, which the sources said would be available in gasoline engine, hybrid and full-electric versions. It would operate as a "follower" in commercial vans and small city cars, using versions of vehicles produced by Renault. The arrangement would allow the two partners to share technologies and manufacturing capacity, while keeping advanced technology and product development separate from each other to "keep our design, engineering and brands distinctive from each other," one of the sources said. However, the company is keen to maintain a presence in the region, albeit a reduced one."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/nissans-survival-plan-europe-suvs-and-sharing-renault   NEW STANDARDS RELEASED FOR ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES "China released mandatory safety regulations related to electric vehicles, batteries and electric buses on Tuesday, which analysts say will help improve the industry's manufacturing standards and relieve customer safety concerns." reports China Daily: "They emphasize the electrical safety and functional safety requirements and increase the requirements for thermal event alarm signaling in battery systems, which should provide drivers and passengers with adequate safety warnings. The standards also put higher requirements on battery safety, and emphasize an improvement in battery system tests covering thermal diffusion, external fire, mechanical shock, simulated collision and humidity cycling, external short circuit, and overheating. It specifies batteries must be able to withstand at least five minutes of overheating without causing a fire or explosion, allowing drivers and passengers sufficient time to get out of the vehicle."   https://global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202005/18/WS5ec1e22aa310a8b241156558.html   UK’S FIRST CAR BATTERY ‘GIGAFACTORY’ TO BE BUILT BY TWO STARTUPS "Two British startups have announced plans to invest as much as £4bn in building the UK’s first large-scale battery factory, in a move that could prove a major boost to the country’s struggling car industry." writes The Guardian today: "AMTE Power and Britishvolt have signed a memorandum of understanding saying they will work together on plans for a plant to make lithium ion batteries.  Lars Carlstrom, the chief executive of Britishvolt, said the companies had an ambition to build facilities producing batteries with capacity of as much as 30 gigawatt hours (GWh) a year, which would be roughly equivalent to the joint Tesla-Panasonic Gigafactory in Nevada. A factory of that size would create as many as 4,000 jobs, he said. The government-backed Faraday Institution estimates 130 GWh of annual capacity will be required by 2040 if the UK is to retain a large automotive sector."   https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/may/20/uk-first-car-battery-gigafactory-amte-power-britishvolt?CMP=share_btn_tw   XPENG'S P7 LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT WITH A SYNCHRONIZED MUSIC & LIGHT SHOW "Xpeng Motors has already begun taking orders for their highly anticipated long-range sports sedan, the P7. With customer deliveries set to begin in June, Xpeng is showing off a special feature that the P7 will have; a synchronized light and music show." writers TOm Moloughney for InsideEVs: "The P7 has a strip of LED lights that extend across the entire front of the vehicle. Using those LEDs, as well as the lower driving lights, the vehicle performs a virtual "dance", similar to the Tesla Model X's light show. Initially, when P7 deliveries begin next month, the vehicle will come with a couple of simple lighting modes. However, Xpeng is going to use OTA updates to add more complex songs and light shows for the owners to select from"   https://insideevs.com/news/423962/xpeng-p7-programmable-light-show/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? Show #746   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 12th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   BMW 7 SERIES ELECTRIC RUMORED TO HAVE AT LEAST 650 HORSEPOWER "When BMW announced the beefiest version of the next-generation 7er will have zero emissions, it didn’t disclose any details about the power delivered by its electric motors. Now, our pals at BMWBLOG claim to be in the know about the hottest version of the fullsize luxury sedan." says Motor1: "Rumored to be called Mi7 or i7 M60, the range-topping 7 Series is said to have at least two electric motors delivering a combined output of 650+ horsepower or about 50 hp more than the M760i.  The report goes on to mention the flagship 7 Series will have a large battery pack with a capacity of over 100 kWh for a range between charges of up to 400 miles (644 kilometers). It won’t be the only M Performance version as below it will reportedly sit a plug-in hybrid model tentatively called M750e with a turbocharged straight-six 3.0-liter combined with an electric motor. The electric derivatives will have some stiff competition coming from existing models such as the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S as well as from the upcoming Audi E-Tron GT, Jaguar XJ, and the Mercedes EQS."   https://www.motor1.com/news/408983/bmw-7-series-electric-power/   InsideEVs has more info on the pack sizes: “Regarding the i7, there will apparently be (at least) two variants. One will draw juice from an 80 kWh battery pack while another will have an even bigger 120 kWh pack; this should take it up to 600 km (385 miles) on a single charge, and there’s a good change it will only be offered in the long-wheelbase model in order to actually have enough room for the pack to fit.”   https://insideevs.com/news/409390/bmw-i7-rendering-all-we-know/   HOT PLUG-IN HYBRID VOLKSWAGEN T-ROC GTE "The Volkswagen T-Roc range could potentially be bolstered by a high-performance GTE version in future, should the market produce sufficient demand" says Auto Express: "When asked during a press conference call if a performance plug-in hybrid for the T-Roc would be a good fit, VW’s Project Manager for Electrified Drivetrains, Dr Kai Philipp, said: “Our MQB technology gives us the possibility to do so.”Power would come from the petrol-electric powertrain that’s widely used across the Volkswagen Group. A 1.4-litre turbocharged engine is paired with an electric motor, which is capable of producing as much as 242bhp in the new 2020 Golf. However, the GTE would be more efficient than either: the 13kWh battery should enable an electric-only range of around 40 mile."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/hybrid-cars/352045/hot-plug-hybrid-volkswagen-t-roc-gte-cards   CONSTRUCTION OF TESLA GIGAFACTORY 4 REPORTEDLY POSTPONED "After the super quick pace of work at the Tesla Gigafactory 4 (aka Giga Berlin) site in Grünheide, near Berlin in Germany, the activity now is almost frozen. Some were saying that Tesla is waiting for a permit, but the latest reports indicate that the company is revising its construction plan." says InsideEVs: "Tesla previously completed clearing the tree farm and ground leveling. The next stage would be the foundation, which seems to be postponed. Torque News reports: "We just got breaking news from Tesla Giga Berlin. Brandenburg’s public radio RBB 24 reports that Tesla has to postpone the construction of the foundation for its Gigafactory 4 in Grunheide, outside of Berlin." According to the State Environment Agency, Tesla wants to revise the approval documents on one more point: In response to criticism from local residents, the company had announced that the factory should use less water than originally planned."   https://insideevs.com/news/408936/construction-gigafactory-4-postponed/   LORDSTOWN MOTORS SHOWS ENDURANCE ELECTRIC PICKUP'S IN-WHEEL MOTORS IN ACTION "Several automakers, from Ford to Tesla, are planning to launch electric pickup trucks, but startup company Lordstown Motors will have something that sets its Endurance pickup apart from the rest—in-wheel electric motors. A new video shows one of the in-wheel motors in action." says Motor Authority: "Mounting the motors inside the wheel hub frees up space, and offers the potential to more precisely control how much torque is sent to a wheel. Torque can be added or subtracted by adjusting the amount of current going to the motor, rather than using the clutch packs, differentials, or brake applications typically used to adjust torque split. Lordstown says the Endurance carries a base price of $52,500. It is accepting $1,000 refundable deposits for early build slots. In comparison, Tesla says its Cybertruck starts at $39,900. Lordstown has said it will start deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2020. Lordstown is also targeting commercial fleets, while the Cybertruck is aimed at individual retail buyers."   Lordstown, Cybertruck, Rivian, Ford F150, Hummer, Bollinger.   https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1127234_lordstown-motors-shows-endurance-electric-pickup-s-in-wheel-motors-in-action   ELECTRIC CAR WAITING TIMES REVEALED "The average waiting time on a new electric car has significantly dropped in the past 12 months, with the majority of new electric vehicles now available within 12 weeks, according to What Car?’s analysis of all 26 electric models currently on sale." says WhatCar: "Last year, lead times for some electric cars exceeded more than 12 months, making it nigh-on impossible for buyers to commit to purchasing one. the Kia e-Niro, had a waiting list that extended to more than a year 12 months ago. As a result of increased supply, its lead time has been halved to 26 weeks. The longest wait is on Porsche’s first electric car, the Taycan (36 weeks), followed by the Seat Mii electric and Skoda Citigo e IV (26 weeks). Even cars with the shortest lead times, including the all-new Peugeot e-208 and new Renault Zoe, are available with discounts"   Zoe 1-12 weeks Audi e-tron: 12 weeks BMW i3 - 20 Weeks IONIQ - 18 weeks Kona - 18 Weeks iPAce - 20 weeks e-Niro - 26 weeks Soul EV - 8 weeks Leaf 2-12 weeks Peugeot e208 1-16 weeks e2008 - 6-12 weeks Taycan - 36 weeks Tesla - Model S/3/X up to 15 weeks. But as I've got a long weekend off I'm leaving it at 80% . But in the past I've had the leaf plugged in at 100% for 3/4 days. Holidays when I've flown from the airport 30 miles away left it for two weeks at 60/70% . TBH I don't think it matters short term. Eg long weekend. But longer term week to two weeks plus I would say leave around 80% . Just my experience of 3yrs EV driving   Ybe EV  • 2 days ago Hi Martyn, Regarding your question of the week. I keep my Nissan Leaf connected up to my V2G charger. I have set it to charge to maximum of 95% and discharge to minimum of 25%. It tends to do one full cycle over a 24 hour period. I have been on the OVO V2G trial in the UK since July 2019 and have seen no significant battery degradation in that time. The current lockdown just means the car spends more time connected to the V2G charger and goes some small way to help smooth out the demand peaks. The best part is that I have had basically free electricity for my home and EV since the trial began :-)   Chris Avram Car models may have special needs in layup. Chevy/Holden Volt Amperra will only maintain the 12 Volt battery if it is "rumning" or plugged in. Cant choose SOC so mine sits plugged in at 100% SOC = 85 % REAL. Also need to run it for 10 minutes on gas every month  or so.   Fabian Bonasera  • 5 days ago We're keeping our 2013 Nissan LEAF at 80%.   We're not sure if we should keep it plugged in all the time or not.  We are still driving it 1 or 2 days a week for small trips, so we could charge just one night every week if that's better for the battery's health   Victor Wood I parked up my Ioniq with about 75% charge as that’s what it was at when I last parked it. Once every couple of weeks I will go to the (remotely located garage) and change it’s parked position and leave the car on for 15 minutes to recharge the 12v battery. Tbh the 12v battery worries me more than the HV battery.   Kenz300 x  • 6 days ago If the car is parked for a long time leave it at 50-60% no more.   Bill B Our Audi E Tron is setting @ 79 miles in the garage, here in FL USA. Probably not going anywhere for a while. Getting groceries delivered.   PETER GLASS The BMW i3 manual is pretty clear. If you are leaving the car for over 3months then it should be plugged in. It has so little vampire drain that as long as it’s on reasonably high charge frankly there’s nothing really to worry about. There is no facility to set a charging limit, e.g. 80%, like a Tesla or Kona so you’d have to unplug manually at the right time if you wanted to leave it short of 100%. One important thing is, the i3 battery management has ‘passive cell balancing’ which is best done at 100% [it does happen at high charge but what level is unclear] so having the car idle is an opportunity to leave it balancing and getting a deep sleep. [The manual is equally clear about not leaving the car on low charge. What is low? Well, it won’t let you turn on the heaters while sitting waiting at a rapid charger if it’s under 12%, so clearly the BMS is unhappy there. I drove back from Poole in 2017 with only 6 or 7% left and didn’t charge it back up for over a day – I’m sure the car emailed me it was unhappy, but I can’t remember for sure…!!]. I think most EVs need to be concerned about is their 12Volt batteries and it’s worth waking up the car, switching it on for say 20mins letting the DC to DC converter do it’s work [especially if they are a few years old]. I expect the i3 manual on the 3month lay up is thinking about this issue.   RAJEEV NARAYAN I’m a physician so I’m driving 80 miles a day or more! In the past however when I have left the EV for a week or so, I left the battery at about 50% under the assumption that the battery dislikes extreme states of charge or discharge.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How can the EV industry help people get driving electric as soon as this is all over?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 237 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #742   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 8th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   RIVIAN R1T ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK LAUNCH DELAYED UNTIL 2021 "Rivian has confirmed that the launch of its R1T electric pickup truck will be delayed at least slightly." reports InsideEVs: "The reason is COVID-19. Planned for 2020, the new launch schedule calls for first deliveries of the electric truck sometime in 2021. When in 2021 will depend on a lot of factors, including how long the lockdown remains in place."   https://insideevs.com/news/408382/rivian-r1t-truck-delay-launch/   MERCEDES-AMG EQS ELECTRIC FASTBACK VS TESLA MODEL S & PORSCHE TAYCAN "For years, Germany’s Mercedes-Benz and BMW have postured about reproducible performance and track times for electric cars." write Green Car Reports today: "Yet neither of them have managed to present a fully electric model that—like the Porsche Taycan—represents the performance side of EVs in anything approaching the fervor shown in the Model 3 Performance. That’s likely to change with a top-performance version of the upcoming Mercedes EQS that might, like the fully electric 7-Series BMW confirmed last month is on the way, boast better performance than internal-combustion models.  To compete with the Model S Plaid, it would likely have outputs in the vicinity of 800 hp and 1000 lb-ft, according to reports. The EQS will already face a growing group of rivals that includes the Porsche Taycan, the Lucid Air, and the upcoming Jaguar XJ, plus the Cadillac Celestiq, a flagship fastback for the GM luxury brand. By mid-March, all had been sold. The Citigo has now been removed from Skoda’s online configurator. The Citigo-e iV, sibling to the Volkswagen e-Up and Seat Mii Electric, is one of the most affordable mainstream EVs on sale, with a starting price of £16,955. It offers a claimed range of 161 mile."   https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/skoda-citigo-e-iv-withdrawn-from-sale-due-to-high-demand   WHY THE NEW SUPERB PHEV IS VITAL FOR SKODA "Škoda's has many electrified models on the way, including the Kodiaq iV, Octavia iV and Octavia RS iV petrol plug-in hybrids, with the fully electric Enyaq iV due to join the Citigoe iV. This armada is being led by the company's biggest, most expensive car, the Superb, in 1.4-litre iV form." reports Glenn Brooks  at just-auto: "Series production didn't get fully underway until year end, which was then followed by build for right-hand drive markets. UK deliveries commenced at the end of January. As at mid-February, which was the last time that Škoda reported progress, some 2,000 examples had been produced."   This sits along with the Golf GTE, the SEAT Leon, the Cupra eHybrid, the Audi A3 TFSIe, the Passat GTE. One of its products is called ASCA, which uses semi conductor compounds based on organic polymers printed on flexible films. " says CleanTechnica: "The flexibility means ASCA thin-film solar products can be mounted on curved surfaces, something traditional solar panels cannot do. Recently, the company demonstrated a car cover embedded with ASCA thin-film solar panels. The thin-film solar panels cover an area of 4 square meters — enough to provide supplementary power to the vehicle and increase its range up to 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) a day based on the car being exposed to the sun for 8 hours."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/06/thin-film-solar-car-cover-can-recharge-your-ev-while-it-is-parked/   TESLA BOOSTS MODEL Y PRODUCTION CAPACITY IN FREMONT "Tesla is using the period of the widespread closure of its plant in Fremont, California, due to the Covid 19 pandemic to make several improvements, including increasing production capacity for the Model Y." says electrive: "Tesla also wants to increase the production of the Model Y, which only started in January 2020. Thus, the forced break in production is to be used to set up a new conveyor belt for the Model Y, called Phase 3. Tesla took over the Fremont plant from Toyota a good ten years ago. Since the production of the Model S started in 2012, there have been no significant breaks for rebuilding work. All expansions for the Model X, Model 3 and later the Model Y have been carried out during ongoing operations."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/04/07/tesla-is-boosting-model-y-production-capacity-in-fremont/   TESLA GETS IN TROUBLE FOR USING HAL 9000 FOR SENTRY MODE, SWITCHING TO PORTAL TURRET "Tesla apparently got in trouble for using imagery representing HAL 9000 from the movie ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ for Sentry Mode so it is switching to something that now seems inspired by a turret from the video game Portal." according to Electrek: "Now Tesla hacker green, who had access to an upcoming Tesla update in the early access program, reported on Twitter that MGM, who owns the rights to 2001: A Space Odyssey, has issued a copyright claim against Tesla forcing them to stop using the image."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/06/tesla-trouble-hal9000-sentry-mode-switches-portal-turret/   TESLA HIKING THE PRICE OF SELF DRIVING "Tesla plans to bump up the price of its "Full Self-Driving" feature on July 1, Elon Musk said in a tweet on Friday." reports a Business Insider story: "The add-on currently costs $7,000, but many of the capabilities it promises are still in development — essentially, buyers are paying for software updates that Tesla will release incrementally.  Musk also said in a Friday tweet that he hopes to introduce traffic-light and stop-sign recognition in the US in a few weeks, but Tesla has historically failed to meet the timelines its CEO has publicly set forth."   https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-will-hike-price-semi-autonomous-full-self-driving-package-2020-4   TESLA TO ROLL OUT WIFI GARAGE DOOR OPENING FEATURES INDEPENDENT OF HOMELINK "Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla will be utilizing WiFi integration to assist drivers in opening their smart garage doors. Automatic garage door opening is available through Homelink. However, some garage doors are not compatible with Homelink and instead use an internet connection through WiFi to operate." says Joey at Teslarati: "The new WiFi integrated opening system also alleviates the need to carry bulky garage door openers that can be lost or stolen, or even the need to pull out a smartphone to open the garage door."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-wifi-garage-door-opening-no-homelink/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   If you’re staying at home and not driving, what condition or state of charge are you leaving your EV parked up in?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 239 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #520   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 7th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.             Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Over the weekend I saw PCP added to the Model 3 design studio. For the spec I would have, which is Performance, in black, with Performance upgrade and Full Self Driving that's £59.890. PCP is £6k down and £817 a month over 4 years. Hire Purchase is £937 a month with £10,000 down and over 5 years.   From Don McAllster - waiting for his AWD Long Range Model 3! He has a petition against the 20% tax hike on solar: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/260903   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R IMPROVES GOODWOOD HILL RECORD "On July 6, Romain Dumas made use of another run in the Volkswagen I.D. R at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and further improved its all-time record to 39.9 seconds (compared to 41.18 seconds in the practice run)." says InsideEVs: "Both times beat the 41.60-second time set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld driving a McLaren MP4/13. We're more than certain that 20 years ago no one would have imagined that an electric car could be be quicker than an F1. The Volkswagen I.D. R driven at Goodwood is a special sprint version of the I.D. R, with a smaller battery pack, since the track length is just 1.16-mile."   https://insideevs.com/news/358506/video-vw-id-r-goodwood-hill-record-39-9-seconds/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER ANNOUNCES RANGE OF EVS TO BE BUILT IN WEST MIDLANDS PLANT "Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced it is set to build a new range of electric vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham." reports the Evening Standard: "Honouring its commitment to deliver electrified options for all new Jaguar and Land Rover models by next year, a next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ will be the first vehicle in the range to enter production. Crafted by the team behind the Jaguar I-PACE – the brand's first all-electric car – the new saloon promises to deliver in design, performance and luxury, although the company has given no indication as to when it might take to the road. Marking the next stage of the company's electrification strategy, the news is seen as a major thumbs up to the UK's automotive industry, which has been hampered by factory closures and job cuts in recent years."   https://www.standard.co.uk/futurelondon/cleanair/jaguar-land-rover-announces-range-of-evs-to-be-built-in-west-midlands-plant-a4183371.html   TESLA YOUTUBER BJØRN NYLAND BREAKS 24-HOUR ELECTRIC CAR DISTANCE RECORD "today we’ve seen yet another reason not to worry about the capability to take EVs on long trips, as Bjørn Nyland has managed to drive 2,781km (1,728mi) in 24 hours in a Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD.  Nyland set this record on IONITY quick chargers in Germany because currently, that network is significantly faster than Tesla’s Superchargers." says Jameson Dow for InsideEVs: "Nyland wanted to emphasize that this record could be done in “realistic” conditions, so there was no closed course and common road rules were followed.  The record was set in Germany, on the Autobahn, and was done at high speeds, around 170km/h (105mph) much of the time. Staying at high speeds inbetween stops resulted in an average speed of 115km/h or 72mph over the entire 24 hours.  Essentially, he was able to travel the same distance as if he drove at US highway speeds consistently for 24 hours without stopping at all."   The sweet spot for charging at the fastest rates was 10%to 63% so they were driving a 120km loop.   https://electrek.co/2019/07/05/tesla-youtuber-breaks-24-hour-electric-car-distance-record/   UNITI ONE AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER "The Swedish electric car Uniti One is now available to pre-order with a refundable deposit of 149 euros." reports PushEVs: "Usually, small cars are very boxy with bad aerodynamics, but that’s not the case in this electric car. With two tandem seats – just like the Renault TWIZY – this electric car is perfect for the city environment.240 km range 130 km/h top speed Rear wheel drive Dual motors output of 120 kW 26 kWh battery pack, DC fast charging"   https://pushevs.com/2019/07/06/uniti-one-available-to-pre-order/   THE ODYSSEY 21 IS THE ELECTRIC OFF ROAD RACE TRUCK FORMULA E WANTS YOU TO GET EXCITED ABOUT "The Extreme E car ran up the hill during the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday afternoon. " according to Jalopnik: "According to Extreme E, the truck sits about 7.5 feet wide, 6.2 feet tall, and 14.4 feet front-to-back. The whole thing, ready to rock and roll, weighs some 3600 pounds. Each of the tires is 37 inches tall with tons of sidewall and lots of knobby Continental rubber to keep the thing trucking forward even in the nasty sand, ice, or dirt that the truck will come into contact with across the season. This is just a show car, built by Spark Racing Technologies [the same company which builds the Formula E chassis], to demonstrate what a finished product might look like."   https://jalopnik.com/the-odyssey-21-is-the-electric-off-road-race-truck-form-1836151628   RAJEEV NARAYAN "90% of your listeners may be male but I am not sure that necessarily means that EVs are a "guy thing" Currently 85% of car purchasing decisions are made by women and apparently women are more likely to buy new than men. Men are more likely the ones closing the deal at dealership, but that does not mean that women are not involved in the purchase decision, weather the vehicle is an EV or not.  Maybe a better question is why are 90% of EV news daily podcast listeners male?"   BRIAN WEATHERALL To avoid any generalising I’ll take the safer option and talk about the woman I know the best, my wife, I’m also safe to know she doesn’t listen to your podcast….. She would no more go to an EV event than to the Motor Show, to her a car is a way to go places and spend my money (sorry “our” money I am reminded).  Taking the LEAF means she can spend a little less of her money as she doesn’t need to put fuel in it.  Other than that it’s just a car to her.  But I’m happy it’s usually the first choice out of our two cars as it only really saves money when it’s moving. I can tell you in the UK Nissan Leaf Owners Group the gender split is 75% men,  many are in the group to offer help, some just for the banter, many are there to ask for help, maybe men just need more help?   HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH I do not think the demographics of your listening audience are reflective of how women perceive electric vehicles. For example, my spouse really hates listen to or watching shows about cars, but she loves driving my car (PHEV Prius Prime) in all electric mode. She is really excited about the prospects of replacing her vehicle with a Model Y when they become available in the near future. I also have female coworkers who drive Tesla's and are constantly evangelizing to others the benefits of driving electric cars. It could be that stereotypical males really love learning about cars and statistics about cars as a way of playing verbal top trumps with their friends. Personally, I find knowing about vehicles statics provides me with something to talk about in social settings. Talking about electric cars in comparison with ICE vehicles allows me plenty of material to engage with my muscle car owning friends.   STEVE JAMES Men just enjoy cars more than women across the range so it doesn’t matter if it’s a petrol, diesel, PHEV or BEV men just enjoy cars more than women.   GREG LEFF Hi Martyn -  brief note about the QOTW -here in the southwest United States in an affluent suburb of Phoenix, Arizona we have loads of EV’s running around our streets. It’s no scientific analysis but I would hazard a guess that at least 30% of the drivers of those EV’s are female. That’s a minimum guess - I could be as much as 50% or more. In my own household we have 3 vehicles, a Nissan Leaf driven by my daughter, a BMW i3 Rex driven by my wife, and a gas burner driven by me. So you see 100% of the EV’s in my house are female driven.   What you’re likely seeing in your listenership is the fact that men are more likely to nerd out over EV’s and want to listen to a podcast talking about them. The women just want to drive and enjoy the smooth, quiet, gas-free miles.   BRENNA KAMINSKI I have been involved with EVs since 2012 and after years of running EV education events, advising on infrastructure, and co-founding two EV clubs I decided to launch my own EV consulting service www.evgal.com. Before launching the website I noticed that most of the other consultants out there in the EV world are men, almost all of the videos I watch about EVs feature men hosts and "experts", and the majority of the EV conversations on platforms like LinkedIn are started by men. I know there are other women out there but we aren't being invited into the conversation.   STEPHEN AND MICHELLE LOO I believe your 90% male following on youtube / podcast is simply a representation of the market who follow motoring and technology trends. You will probably find your followers also fall into the 25-65 age group as this is the age group when most would have the income or necessity for these items.   SANDI WILLIAMS I have a Model 3 Performance, and I love, love, love it.  I listen to you probably 4-5 days a week. Did you know that the podcast came pre-loaded as an app on my car? So in case you think woman aren't listening..... this one is, and I love hearing about what is happening in the EV world and it is nice to listen to someone who isn't Tesla bashing.   VAIDAS Was asking my missus last night and she is just simply not interested too much, she needs a car thats able to safely move her from A to B in comfort and style :) I think you mentioned your wife is pretty much the same? Perhaps its a man think to talk about cars, no matter if its a V6 BMW or V8 Mustang or V12 Ferrari or  22kWh Zoe   CHARLIE FOX In the case of my home, I believe it is down to my wife doesn't really care about cars. She doesn't see value in high dollar cars and is perfectly happy with our two Prius (you know, those self-charging hybrids...)   In my case I am, generally, not a car or truck person. However, I am interested in the environment and emissions and from this have been waiting on electrics since GM starting making and crushing cars. And this makes me seek out shows like yours so I can keep up with events and watch for that opportunity to buy.   My wife has moved to agree with me that we will not buy another ICE car and we will very likely buy a 45-50k Model Y in 2022.   TOM RAFTERY Re my own thoughts on your q, driving rightly or wrongly is something men care more about than women. Go out on the street right now and check out the gender of the drivers of the cars passing you and they will be significantly skewed male. How many married couples do you know where when travelling it is the woman who drives primarily when they are going together in the car (apart from returning from the pub!)?   ARON MCINNES Are EV’s a man thing? No I don’t think it is a man thing. I think listening about, researching and dreaming about EV’s is a man thing. It is more likely that men will spend time thinking about a car. Women who drive EV’s love them. I think women just don’t obsess about there next car or what the are going to do with the car they have.   IAIN EV's don't seem that unusual in my group of friends and I wonder if gay men are more likely to be environmentally conscious and as a result are more likely to be interested in electrified transport.   DAFYDD I think men are generally more likely to be nerds, for a number of reasons. Some of which may be, that many view cars as more than just a tool, to get from A-B. Women despite some men’s attempts, still do most if not all of the family & house things. And all too often have very little time to obsess about irrelevances, such as this car can do that with only that; or will do more with less.   DAVID FINCH I checked the list of people who use our workplace EV chargers, and found that there are 7 men and 5 women. A small sample, and near enough to even. So, I think women are just as likely to own and drive an EV as men. I think men are more likely to geek-out about them though, such as listening to a podcast or visiting Fully Charged Live.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH In the early days of computing, computers were also a "male" thing until social media came along. As soon as that happened, women became interested as they could now indulge their top priority - relationships.     Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Show #514   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 30th June 2019. JAGUAR TO ANNOUNCE HUGE INVESTMENT IN UK ELECTRIC CAR MANUFACTURING "Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will plough hundreds of millions of pounds into the British car industry by preparing one of its factories to build electric cars, in a much-needed boost for the sector." says City AM "JLR will modify its Castle Bromwich plant to build a series of three all-electric models, starting with an electric version of its luxury Jaguar XJ saloon, which is expected to launch next year. The plans, first reported in the Sunday Times, are set to be announced on Friday. The investment is a positive move by Britain’s biggest carmaker, which has struggled amid decreasing demand for diesel models."   https://www.cityam.com/jaguar-to-announce-huge-investment-in-uk-electric-car-manufacturing/   And from Automotive News Europe: "Jaguar Land Rover said during an investor day on June 5 that it will launch its Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) electric-capable platform on a "large SUV and a large premium sedan. MLA can be adapted for pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild-hybrid drivetrains. Electric cars using the MLA platform will have a range of up to 470 km (292 miles). JLR's first electric SUV is expected to be a battery-powered version of the next-generation Range Rover."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/jaguar-land-rover-will-build-electric-cars-uk-factory-paper-says   VOLKSWAGEN PARTIALLY FLOATS TRUCK GROUP TO FUND ELECTRIC CAR PUSH "Volkswagen has floated 11.5 per cent of its truck-making unit, now named Traton, on the Frankfurt and Nasdaq Stockholm stock exchanges. Weak demand from investors had forced the automaker to price the listing at the low end of its target price range. It also meant the company couldn't float the 25 per cent it had wanted to let go of." according to CarAdvice.com.au: "The Volkswagen Group is spending roughly €40 billion ($65 billion) to engineer an extensive range of electric cars, including affordable vehicles based on the new MEB platform, as well as more exclusive vehicles, like the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT."   https://www.caradvice.com.au/770107/volkswagen-partially-floats-truck-group-to-fund-electric-car-push/     DRIVING AN ELECTRIC CAR FEELS LIKE A GAME From Sasha Lekach at MashableUK: "You can't drive a certain way and bring in more fuel in an internal-combustion engine vehicle; your fuel gauge only goes one direction: down. The hypermiling community tries to maximize fuel efficiency while driving, but the fuel supply never replenishes. But driving an EV, I was hooked — driving could essentially become a game, saving me money and energy as the battery recharged when I slowed down or naturally sped up heading down a hill. It also helped that the screen would indicate in real-time how much power I was generating or using."   https://mashable.com/article/electric-vehicles-versus-gas-cars-regenerative-breaking-fun   NORWAY TESLA MODEL 3 SALES IN 2019 EQUAL 50% OF MODEL S SALES SINCE 2013 "How popular is the Tesla Model 3 in Norway? According to TeslaStats.no, pretty darn popular, with 10,539 registered so far this year. (Two were registered in 2018.) Compare that to the 20,194 Model S sedans registered in Norway since 2013 and the 12,471 Model X SUVs registered since 2016." reports Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "It’s true that Norway has aggressive incentives for electric car buyers and those incentives have made that nation one of the global leaders in electric car adoption. But despite the silliness spouted by BMW’s head of research and development, Klaus Fröelich (he told an audience last week, “Boo hoo. Nobody wants to buy electric cars!”), there are lots of people who are very happy to buy an electric car if the terms are right"   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/29/norway-tesla-model-3-sales-in-2019-equal-50-of-model-s-sales-since-2013   ELECTRIFY AMERICA REDUCES POWER OF SOME CHARGERS DUE TO COOLING ISSUE Another issue with liquid cooled fast-charging stations was reported, but this time it ended with simply lowering power output (instead of a total shut down). According to Green Car Reports' article, Electrify America was forced to reduce the power of 30 CCS chargers "due to concerns over a potential coolant leak". The affected chargers are reportedly Efacec HV160 and Efacec HV350 and the issue is global. Electrify America decided to lower the power from 160 kW/320 kW to 50 kW until the service team can visit the station and solve the issue (expected "within a week").   CHINA BEGINS SUBSIDY CUTS ON MUNICIPAL LEVEL “The Beijing government has abolished municipal subsidies for some electric vehicles. Manufacturers of electric vehicles in China can now only be granted subsidies from the central government before these are phased out next year." says electrive.com: "Subsidies for battery electric buses, city cleaning electric vehicles and electric vehicles purchased by government agencies are not affected by the change. Similarly, fuel cell vehicles will continue to receive both municipal and state subsidies. Earlier this year, the Chinese government announced that it will be cutting its subsidies for electric cars this year before they are to be completely abolished by 2020."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/29/china-begins-subsidy-cuts-on-municipal-level/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Doug Vowles, Brighton, Ontario, Canada Yes, EV’s have tons to prove, just not to me, to you, or most of your listeners.  But they have much to prove to folks who can only afford a 15 year old $2,000 car or pick-up truck, and MUST have a vehicle for work, to drive to work, or to drive the kids to school.  They have much to prove to the rural sector with scant access to charging stations, or those who live well away from major transportation corridors with fast chargers.  You get the picture.   Pete GORTON aka @GyroGordini In summary “Not Really”.  We just need to get: - the price down, - many more models available, and - people discounting the FUD. To elaborate, EVs have been shown to be faster, stronger, more reliable and cheaper to operate, and a number of endurance tests have shown they can do nearly anything.   ROB CRAWFORD Yes, especially with the Wall Street, who can't think past the next quarter, who listen to the egregious CNBC FUD about Tesla. I would encourage all EV owners to call your local TV News shows and tell them how owning an EV has changed the way you live your life now sans Petrol-gasoline! You'll have a local news team knocking on your front door. Tell them how you race your EV against ICE cars and beat them hands down. You'll get the local news Sportscaster out to your house.   STEVE JAMES The only thing EV’s need to prove going forward is that they cost the same as a ICE car as the cost at the moment is so stretched in favour of not being unable to afford a brand new off the forecourt car.   YASH OHJA, BANGALORE So my opinion on EVs having more to prove is that; Can EVs (battery and battery- fuel cells) withstand and perform normally (during their complete lifecycle) the high temperatures (going up to 50deg C in few parts of our country)!! Another point would be a bit something on the higher horse power segment .EV have to prove that can they successfully take over the locomotives and marine exhausts (the high horse power engines), which will be a good test!!   MARK GARNETT I think with current EVs and imminent EVs from Mercedes,  Porsche, Honda and VW we are in a good position to crush ICE sakes once-and-fir-all.   What isn’t yet proven is the ability of the traditional OEMs to make EVs in useful volumes, as you said last Sunday, we keep hearing that battery contracts are secured but then get new announcements from the same players a bit later. The main thing holding back EV adoption now is availability; let’s not forget many vehicles are still leased or company cars, so these need replacing when the previous   ROGER STARKEY Very little left to prove A lot to explain , educate. That's where you, and TryEv come in!   Stefan Weilhartner • 1 day ago yes, BEV have something to prove: a cheaper total cost of ownership if you don't have a huge mileage per year.   D R-K  The electric car still has plenty to prove.... to the wholly uninformed who get the majority of their news from traditional media who fill their pages, airwaves and sites with FUD. Until they go mainstream and produce car commercials, the majority outside of our growing movement still think they are just a bit better than milk floats.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   I’ve been checking my stats and over 90% of listeners are men, so why are EVs still a ‘guy thing’?     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 230 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Wednesday 28th March 2018. Firstly a ‘thank you' to one of the podcast listeners from Iceland who just sent a quick note about new chargers there. A little geography lesson by the way, if I drive north here in the UK and got to the top of Scotland, then swam for a bit, I’d eventually hit Iceland. This is from an Icelandic listener Hilmar Sigurpalsson @HilmarSigurpals  who is waiting for his 40kWh Nissan LEAF due in May, and he let me know the new network of EV chargers there means you’re never more than 100km away from one. They are on the ring road, which is the road which travels around the edge of the country. Great that whatever size of country, and Iceland is about 350,000 people, EV’s are spreading. Around 200 new LEAFS are heading there and around 1200 original LEAFS were sold there.   GOOGLE’S WAYMO AND JAGUAR I-PACE JOIN FORCES  Yesterday in New York, Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover announced a partnership which will see the Google-owned company purchase up to 20,000 I-PACEs for self-driving transport. Jaguar call it “the world’s first premium self-driving electric vehicle” So let’s deal with the elephant in the room. I think everyone presumed that title would go to a Model X. And it still might, after all, we’ve not actually seen either of them driving themselves across North America as Elon promised we’d see a Tesla do by the end of 2017. They say: “Waymo Jaguar I-PACEs, equipped with Waymo's self-driving technology, will start testing later this year. On-road testing and capturing real-world data will allow Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover engineers to refine technology and deliver optimum safety and reliability. Up to 20,000 I-PACEs will be built in the first two years of production and be available for riders of Waymo’s driverless service, serving a potential one million trips per day.” To date, Waymo is the only company with a fleet of fully self-driving cars — with no one in the front seat — on public roads. Later this year Waymo will launch the world’s first selfdriving transportation service allowing members of the public to use Waymo’s app to request a vehicle. It did cross my mind, and I mean this respectfully because someone lost their life and that’s far more important than announcements, but do you think at any point they might have shelved this for a few weeks after the Uber crash? Clearly they didn’t feel that the general principle of driverless cars was having to be justified, and you can understand that choice, given Waymo’s excellent safety record. Waymo now have 6 models: a small car, an SUV, a firefly prototype, a Chrysler Pacifica minivan you might have seen in the YouTube videos and a semi-truck. Waymo have said they want to offer the right ride for the right purpose. I think that shows just how far along they are, and how people have underestimated them. Whilst others are still getting the tech right, Waymo are onto the stage of having mini vans for Soccer trips and Semi Trucks for commercial deliveries.  The Jaguar I-PACE will start in Phoenix this year, and Waymo said they were attracted by the 90kWh battery, mileage between charges, and quick charging to add 100kms in 15 mins. It’s also now clear, after years of reports saying Google and Apple would make their own car and take down the car industry with their superbrains, actually they’ve focussed on the hardware/software combo and let expert auto makers deal with the hard job of actually making the car! And Jaguar are doing just that with the Jaguar XJ saloon/sedan coming next year win electric form. And all their models having electrification in the next 19 months, by 2020. Incidentally you know I read a press release yesterday from Jaguar about the cars they’re taking to the New York Auto Show, and I had to correct myself because it said the I-PACE had 150kW charging. Well the Jaguar press release today about the Waymo partnership said it was 100kW. I’m going to go and configure one online as if I’m buying to see what that says. Must try hard NOT to actually buy one! And how does all this affect the poster child of electric cars? Awfully for Tesla .Following this news, the stock went into freefall. I’m not an investor in Tesla or any car stocks, but around 10% of the value was wiped off the company today. At the time of writing which was 4pm Eastern. It must be said the U.S. also opened an enquiry into the fatal crash in Mountain View, California. NVidia also suspended self driving tests and their shares were down 9%. I only mention the financials because it will cause negative stories about electric cars, and it will be noticed by other car makers. So I’m not suggesting the Jaguar news caused this, but it’s certainly clear from watching the commentary today, lots of people made the assumption Tesla were leaders in self driving electric cars, and they were taken aback Waymo might be ahead.   CHINESE PLANS TO STANDARDISE EVS After all this excitement, some news in brief. China is working to standardise it’s own EV sector, which they are heavily promoting to both improve their own air quality and grab the opportunity to be a world leader in the technology. They are focussing on one system of recharging, battery design and consumption. At present the powerbase of car makers is North America or Germany and China see the chance to move that to Beijing. And frankly, from observing this all from the UK and the climate policies taken in the USA along with the behaviour of German car makers in relation to lying about diesel pollution, I can see that happening.   NISSAN STARTS BATTERY EXCHANGE PROGRAM Nissan say: “Nissan LEAF owners in Japan will be able to exchange their cars’ old batteries for refabricated ones under a new, fee-based program. Starting in May, owners of the 100% electric Nissan LEAF can turn in their used batteries and, for a fee, receive refabricated ones. Nissan is using the battery-refabrication capabilities of 4R Energy Corp., a company established through a joint venture with Sumitomo Corp., to offer the program. As demand for electric vehicles grows, the number of used batteries will increase signifi Nissan hopes that by reclaiming these batteries, it can help lower battery replacement costs and heighten the used-car value of electric vehicles. This will enhance the electric-car ownership experience, which in turn will help promote their use, ultimately contributing to lower CO2 emissions. Nissan will initially offer 24-kilowatt-hour refabricated batteries for 300,000 yen apiece, with plans to expand the lineup. Exchange costs for brand-new Nissan LEAF batteries are 650,000 yen for 24 kWh; 800,000 yen for 30 kWh; and 820,000 yen for 40 kWh.”   NISSAN LAUNCHES SOLAR INSTALLATIONS And staying with Nissan, according to Mark at InsideEVs, Nissan and Ecosystem Japan want to install more solar panels in the Kanto region of Japan. They’ll add the panels to the roof for free, you sign up for 20 years to buy the electricity, and at the end of the contract the panels are yours. A nice bonus for new LEASF owners.   MORE ELECTRIC VANS After we told you yesterday the Workhorse electric vans being unveiled today for use in the Bay Area. Now, Man Trucks are selling a full electric van called the MAN eTGE. Again it’s 100 miles or 160 kms and designed for urban routes where air quality is worse from diesel delivery vans. It has a 36kWh battery. Plus of course, for those many cities which are moving towards no-diesel zones. MAN says 70% of light commercial vehicles do less than 100kms, or 62 miles, per day based on their extensive knowledge of how they products are used. Also the average speed is low.   HYUNDAI UNION HEAD FEARS ELECTRIC CARS Reuters report: “Hyundai Motor’s union chief warned its workers may face a similar crisis to the one hitting General Motors’ (GM.N) South Korean unit as sales in key markets slide, adding that electric cars were ‘evil’ and will destroy jobs.” Now I’m willing to chalk this one down to translation, I don’t believe a union boss would call the future technology of EVs evil. Not in the way you and I think of evil.  By the way, South Korean unions are strong. 500  employees a year get a free week-long trip to Europe, Hyundai supports their sporting events, and they are seeking a 7.4% wage rise. Nice if you can get it.   BMW i3 SALES TOP 10,000 IN UK After 5 years on sale the BMW i3 just sold it’s 10,000 car in the uk. The latest 33kWh battery gets you 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. Plus there’s the new i3s which uses the same battery but is a bit lower, a bit wider, and a bit faster 0-60 in 6.9 seconds. But you lose a bit of range for that.   Congrats to BMW.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Als ich sagte „Ich geh´ dann mal meine Katze abholen!“ Auf die Frage, aus welchem Tierheim die sei, habe ich nur gegrinst und gemeint, so eine Katze gäbe es nicht im Tierheim. Und DIE Katze gibt´s wirklich nicht im Tierheim. Die steht bestenfalls mal davor!
