Vicki's grandfather raced a Frazer Nash at Brooklands and, with heritage like that, small wonder that she made her career in the motoring world. She started racing karts at the age of 12 and went on to compete in a multitude of cars and categories. Notable achievements include becoming the first woman to win a Maserati race in the history of the marque, when she competed in a support race at the British Grand Prix in 2004. Vicki has been a motoring journalist from the age of 18 and in 1994 joined the Top Gear team on BBC, before moving to Channel 5 to present Fifth Gear, staying with the show when it moved to the Quest channel. Her journalistic skills have featured in a wide variety of newspapers and magazines, including Auto Express, What Car?, Performance Car and the Sunday Times, earning Vicki the accolade of being the UK's number one female four-wheel journalist. We welcomed Vicki to Brooklands and she delivered a fascinating conversation about her outstanding career.

In the capital, there are 102 public chargers per 100,000 of population, while at the other end of the scale Northern Ireland has just 18 per 100,000. - The average provision across the UK is 42 per 100,000. - DfT says its information is provided by the EV charge point app Zap-Map, which claims to record 95 per cent of all available devices. The government's own database (the National Chargepoint Registry) records fewer than 20,000 public charge points nationwide - Zap-Map doesn't record how many cars can be charged by a single charge point device, so the true picture of charge capacity is likely to be higher than the stated number, the DfT says. TESLA GIGA BERLIN SEES DELAY FOR CONSTRUCTION, ELON MUSK SAYS ITS NOT RIGHT - The Tesla Gigafactory Berlin is seeing another delay in its construction as the State Environmental Agency and the Brandenburg Administrative Court re-opens the discussion regarding the plant. Here, Elon Musk said that what they are doing is "not right," especially as the operations and processes in the plant also see a hindrance. - The Tesla CEO has said his side on the issue via his official Twitter page, saying that what the agencies and involved people of authority are doing is "not right." - the State Environmental Agency and the Brandenburg Administrative Court are delaying Giga Berlin's construction and re-opening the discussion regarding its future. The bodies are concerned with the future of the plant, especially the upcoming lawsuits that it would face once operational. - the focus of the concerned authorities is on environmental protection, particularly with the supply of water needed by the surrounding population. Also, there are plenty more environmental reasons that were cited by the committee though these are not yet the full reasons why they hinder Tesla Gigafactory Berlin's construction. Electric vehicles accounted for 70.1 per cent of all new registrations in the month. The most successful model across all drive types was the VW ID.4 with 913 registrations. - The fact that October 2021 is significantly lower than September with its 13,946 new electric car registrations is probably mainly due to Tesla's delivery practices. - The 8,116 electric cars were joined by 2,226 plug-in hybrids in October, with a market share of 19.2 per cent (down 6.2 per cent from October 2020). Of course, it depends on numerous factors -- and who you ask -- but Porsche engineers believe they've figured it out. - "At the moment, we think 100-kilowatt-hours is the right battery size," said Benjamin Passenberg, manager of high-voltage system concepts at Porsche, while speaking with press during a media event last month. That sounds like an oddly convenient number, but numerous reasons back up this claim. - According to Porsche, more than 95% of motorists travel less than 124 miles per day, so why pay for a gigantic battery pack you don't really need and then have to drag it around everywhere you drive? It doesn't make a lot of sense. - Reinforcing the claim that 100-kWh is just about the right size, in simulated testing, a Porsche Taycan fitted with an 85.1-kWh battery pack lapped the Nürburgring 0.7 second faster than a model fitted with a smaller -- and 240 pound lighter -- 70-kWh battery. Even though the svelter car accelerated a tiny bit quicker, the larger battery provided more sustained performance, which resulted in the slightly faster lap time. BMW'S ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES SURGE, BUT CHIP SHORTAGE POSES CHALLENGE - The BMW Group's sales of fully electric vehicles grew by 121.4% in the first nine months of 2021, hitting 59,688 units, with the German carmaker stating Wednesday that electric mobility was “becoming an increasingly vital growth driver and success factor” for the company. - In total, the Munich-headquartered firm sold 231,575 all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles between January and September, a jump of 98.9%. By comparison, in the third quarter of 2021 alone, Elon Musk's Tesla says it delivered 241,300 vehicles. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/03/bmws-electric-vehicle-sales-surge-but-chip-shortage-poses-challenge.html Original Source : https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/porsche-100-kilowatt-hours-battery-size/ CHEVY BOLT FAMILY SALES DOWN 21 PERCENT DURING Q3 2021 - Chevy Bolt family sales – which include sales of the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV – decreased 20.5 percent in the United States during the third quarter of 2021. - The segment was dominated by the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, which combined for a lofty 81 percent segment share. The Volkswagen ID.4 and Mustang Mach-E followed with 6 percent each, while the Nissan Leaf, Bolt EUV, and Bolt EV all accounted for 2 percent each. - Low sales volumes have typically been an area of concern given GM's EV-focused strategy, which calls for launching 30 electric vehicles by the year 2025. To that end, Chevy Bolt family sales during Q3 2021 isn't exactly reassuring, though the numbers aren't too far off from the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. - low Chevy Bolt family sales volume is the result of the ongoing stop sale and recall over battery pack fires. As a result, sales of the Bolt EV and EUV – which both ride on the same GM BEV2 platform and use the same 65 kWh battery pack – have been suspended until the situation is fully resolved, which has not taken place for the third quarter of 2021. IONIQ5 YOUTUBE REVIEWS ARE OUT The embargo lifted early this morning for reviews of the new Hyundai IONIQ 5, so let's have a look at the highlights and takeaways from around the web: Fully Charged - the most gorgeous car i've seen this year. Doesn't look like the crossovers everyone else is making. Acceleration was nice but not staggering. The adapter to plug in your domestic plug lives under teh floor in the boot. He loved the regen paddles behind the wheel, the cliky buttons, the style of the interior is like driving an Apple Store. And he has a fight with the motorizes charging flap. Jonny Smith - likes the 3 metres wheelbase, more than a Range Rover. Loves the flat floor, no rear wiper because the aero pushes the water off, 800v, the augmented HUD, said he's strugling to find fault with it. The 155mph top speed not a problem. Worth watching just to see what he powers from the car. WhatCar? - likes the twin screens, the charge to 80% in 18 minutes, their version of Nissan's e-Pedal is the i-Pedal. nextmove - loves the pixel lights, self-presentign door handles, he showed the internal plug socket which the UK ones didn't, he showed off the key which had buttons for forward and back. aka Tesla Summon. But he charges it on IONITY, charging at 223kW at 50%! HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 THRASHES COMPETITORS AT CHARGING "Unlike the previous artificial example, this time we can take a look at charging results of Hyundai Ioniq 5 from 10% to 80% State of Charge (SOC) in South Korea on April 20, 2021, at an outside temperature of 19°C and the battery temperature of 15°C (initial, we guess)." says InsideEVs: "The charging curve is quite complex, with multiple sharp increases and decreases along the way. It starts at about 115 kW at 10% SOC, at 14-15% SOC it increases to about 187 kW, and then again to 220 kW at 29-30% SOC. The peak range is quite wide: between 30 to 51%. The peak value of more than 225 kW appears to be reached around 51% SOC, but then power quickly decreases (maybe due to too high temperature of the battery cells) to "just" 120 kW at 52-54%. Once the temperature stabilizes (we guess), the charging power increased once again to 170 kW. By 79-80% it decreases to around 130 kW." https://insideevs.com/news/503522/hyundai-ioniq5-fast-charging-analysis/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles RIMAC SHOWS OFF C_TWO HYPERCAR ACCELERATION They say it will be the fastest accelerating production car in the world. They did 10 launches, going from 80% to 60% over those runs. "The fully homologated road-going prototype was put to the test in quarter-mile runs and managed to complete the task in 8.95 seconds at 156.1 mph (251.2 km/h) after doing 0-60 mph in 2.42 seconds in the very first outing with the tires still cold. Following several trial runs, the first proper quarter-mile sprint took only 8.94 seconds at 155.1 mph (249.7 km/h)." writes Motor1.com: "When a company's CEO says a 0 to 60 mph run in 2.33 seconds is "quite bad," you know that car is going to be an absolute rocket. After all, Rimac has previously said the production model will do the job in 1.85 seconds on its way to a top speed of 258 mph (412 km/h) thanks to a whopping 1,914 horsepower (1,408 kilowatts) and 1,696 pound-feet (2,300 Newton-meters) of torque." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXe4X3rYIPw TESLA EARNINGS CALL PREVIEW. Most people are not aware that a Meyers Manx – an off-road dune buggy based on the iconic VW Beetle – won the inaugural NORRA Mexican 1000 back in 1967. And now, it’s the VW ID. 4’s turn to prove its merits in the harsh Mexican terrain." reports SlashGear: " It starts with a stock 2021 VW ID.4 1st Edition model with a single rear-mounted 201-horsepower electric motor and an 82 kWh battery pack. Next, the wizards at Rhys Millen Racing gave it a set of rally-style coilover struts, tubular lower front control arms, and boxed lower rear links. With the mods in place, the VW Id.4 sits two inches higher off the ground than stock. Rhys Millen Racing relocated the radiator several inches higher to improve both the vehicle’s cooling capacity and approach angle. You’ll also find additional skid plates and 8/8-inch steel reinforcements in the undercarriage" https://www.slashgear.com/this-vw-id-4-by-tanner-foust-and-rhys-millen-racing-is-challenging-the-baja-peninsula-26670352/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Whats the most effective consumer education regarding EVs? OF DESIGN https://www.autoblog.com/2021/03/18/lucid-motors-derek-jenkins-interview-gravity-air-electric-vehicles/#slide-2262267 PATENT REVEALS NEW IMAGES OF LUCID MOTORS’ GRAVITY SUV "Lucid’s astute forum members have uncovered news the automaker may or may not want the public to see yet. Patent images of Lucid Motors’ upcoming Gravity SUV were uncovered in a filing with the EUIPO." asys electrk: "Lucid has added a lot more glass to its roof compared to the concept images. This should let in a lot more natural light and help the interior cabin feel roomier overall. front end appears to be slightly bigger, while the back end is noticeably so. The concept back end sort of bubbled out, but it appears Lucid has now moved the rear bumper out further. This should allow for more cargo. Additionally, it looks like Lucid plans to add slightly wider glass to the rear as well, again allowing more natural light within the SUV and better visibility looking out the back." https://electrek.co/2021/03/18/patent-reveals-new-images-of-lucid-motors-gravity-suv/ Let's mop up some of the news from Thursday as the UK cut the EV grant from £3000 to £2500, but more importantly slashed the threshold from £50k to £35k, and even more importantly did it immediately. UK EV PRICES REDUCED DUE TO GRANT CHANGE "Many car firms will now be adjusting their prices, like Citroen, to come in under the ceiling. Citroen’s price changes will mean all variants of the electric hatchback will now qualify for the government’s plug-in car grant. The French firm reduced the price of is top-spec e-C4 Shine Plus models by £550 meaning that the entirety of the range is eligible for the grant." says CarDealer Magazine: "On the road pricing for the e-C4 now starts from £30,895 to £32,495, inclusive of the £2,500 grant. MG said on Friday that it will continue to offer buyers of its electric vehicles a £3,000 discount. The firm pledged to make up the additional £500 until the end of the month in a critical plate change month for the motor trade." AutoExpress add: "Shine Plus version of its new all-electric family hatchback is the most popular variant. It is just one of many electric cars on sale in Britain that may now receive a retail price cut in order to still qualify for the newly reduced grant. This particular e-C4 was previously priced from £35,495 and the new on-the-road price stands at £34,995. The e-C4 makes use of a 134bhp electric motor and 50kWh battery system and Citroen claims a maximum range of 217 miles on a full charge." As for the VW range, they opted not to change any prices. But did put out a press release reminding you that two of their ID.3 models were available under the threshold unlike just one which I said yesterday. “D.3 Life Pro and ID.3 Life Pro Performance. The ID.3 Life Pro Performance went on sale late last year and has since gone on to be crowned ‘Small Electric Car of the Year’ by What Car? at its Car of the Year Awards 2021. It features a 204 PS motor and 58 kWh battery (net capacity), which provides a WLTP range of 263 miles. the ID.3 Life Pro was introduced and offers a new motor option and lower price for entry into the ID.3 range. It retains the 58 kWh batteryt” And the new ID.3 Pure model with a 45kWh battery is out later this year. https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/car-firms-move-to-cut-ev-prices-after-governments-shock-move-to-slash-plug-in-car-grant-funding/219685 HOW THE PORSCHE TAYCAN'S INNOVATIVE ELECTRIC MOTORS WORK "Many EVs such as the Audi e-tron use a more affordable asynchronous machine (ASM) or asynchronous electric motor, but Porsche uses a permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM) that it says is less prone to overheating." says Carbuzz: "Describing the supply and control of three-phase AC voltage for the PSM, Porsche says: "The speed of the motor is determined by the frequency at which the alternating voltage oscillates around the zero point from plus to minus. In Taycan motors, the pulse inverter sets the frequency of the rotating field in the stator, thereby regulating the speed of the rotor." https://carbuzz.com/news/heres-how-the-porsche-taycans-innovative-electric-motors-work EUROPEAN ENGINEERS TACKLE EV LIGHTWEIGHTING "Engineers at the Technological Institute of Aragon (ITAINNOVA) here are coordinating a new European Union initiative to develop lightweight components for electric vehicles." says AssemblyMag.coM: "These technologies can directly contribute to improving vehicle efficiency in terms of kilowatt hours consumed per kilometer, as well as vehicle autonomy, and also reduce environmental impact."...focusing on three different components: a cross beam, a suspension control arm, and a battery clamping and packing system." https://www.assemblymag.com/articles/96240-european-engineers-tackle-ev-lightweighting FOUR EVS MERCEDES IS BRINGING TO THE U.S. BY 2022 "The US was supposed to get the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV but that didn’t happen and it never will. But that’s okay because the US will be getting four EVs over the next two years from the German luxury automaker’s EQ sub-brand. " according to InsideEVs: "Interestingly, two sedans will arrive first, not SUVs. The 2022 Mercedes EQS sedan will go on sale this fall and will soon enter production in Germany. The report didn’t mention a reveal date, but it’s likely around the corner. The EQE sedan is based on the same platform as the EQS and deliveries will start in 2022. The driving range is in the area of 400 miles. Mercedes-EQ’s two electric SUVs will be built in its Tuscaloosa, Alabama factory in 2022 (this was announced in December). Each one is an SUV variant of the EQS and EQE sedans and shares the same name." https://insideevs.com/news/494819/these-four-evs-mercedes-bringing-us-2022 NISSAN IN TWEET STORM AS E-POWER AD HITS A FALSE NOTE "Twitter has been ablaze with users airing their views on what they consider misleading claims by Nissan. They say the company hit the wrong note when proclaiming that the e-Power drive has a “100% electric motor-driven system.”" reports electrive: " the drive’s main energy source is not the battery but a gasoline engine that acts exclusively as a generator. Twitter users know that. Their responses ranged from irritation – “wait, is it a hybrid?” – to distain as this example shows: “Wait a minute. You just invented a car with a gas burning engine which powers an electric motor? I mean… Congratulations, Nissan. You just invented the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. What a billion dollar facepalm.” Nissan is not alone in trying to make their cars sound greener than they are. We remember that Toyota and Lexus would repeatedly advertise their simple hybrid models as “self-charging”. A claim so misleading, the Norwegian Consumer Agency banned such commercials." https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/17/nissan-in-tweet-storm-as-e-power-ad-hits-a-false-note/ SPAIN, SEAT, & IBERDROLA WILL USE EU FUNDS FOR EV BATTERY FACTORY "Spain plans to use funding from the European Union to create a public-private consortium with Volkswagen Group’s SEAT, based in Spain, and the power company Iberdrola to build Spain’s first EV battery factory. " says CleanTechnica: "Battery production would create many jobs, and it would be supporting the key need for much more climate-fighting cleantech, in this case electric vehicles. Spain was looking to revamp Nissan’s main car plant near Barcelona into a battery production facility in order to preserve thousands of jobs. That plant closed back in December.". https://cleantechnica.com/2021/03/17/spain-seat-iberdrola-will-use-eu-funds-for-ev-battery-factory/ VOLVO GROUP VENTURE CAPITAL INVESTS IN DRIIVZ EV CHARGING SOFTWARE COMPANY Volvo Group Venture Capital has invested in Driivz Ltd., a leading global EV charging software company which has developed a platform for managing large charging networks for electric vehicles from end-to-end. The Driivz platform functions as an operating system for EV charging networks and is used by the operators of charging points, EV fleets and other key players in the ecosystem. A joint pilot project between Volvo Trucks, the Volvo Group and Driivz is ongoing with the aim of developing and testing new and innovative charging services to meet the specific needs of electric truck customers and drivers. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA DROPS PRICES OF MODEL 3 BY AS MUCH AS 24% "Tesla (TSLA) cut the price of its base variants of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y sports utility vehicle but raised the prices for performance models in the U.S. Tesla stock fell. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus is $1,000 cheaper at $36,990, while a Model Y Standard Range costs $2,000 less and is priced at $39,990. But the prices for the Performance variant of the Model 3 and Y each rose $1,000. The Model 3 now costs $55,990 and Model Y rose to $60,990." says INvestors.com "In Japan, the base price of the standard version of a Model 3 was cut to 4.29 million yen, which is about $40,500. The long-range version now goes for 4.99 million yen or $47,200. Tesla hopes the price cuts will spur sales in Japan, where it sold fewer than 2,000 cars last year. Why? Forthcoming tax credit? Increasing competition? Market share? Electrek coment from Eric: In Vermont, the $2500 state tax credit applies to vehicles with a base model under $40,000. Before today, only the Model 3 qualified (as well as the VW iD.4, but not the Ford Mustang-e). After today, the Model Y now qualifies for the state credit. Even if you purchase a higher priced model. I wonder how many other states have a $40,000 base cap? That might be the reason to drop the base vehicle but not the more popular LR AWD version. User NeverFollow: The $40k Model Y SR includes Premium Interior so it is even a better deal than the $37k Model 3 SR+, also the Model Y SR can have a tow hitch. The Premium Interior has LED fog lamps and Premium Audio (14 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 amps). Anyway $1,000 when you need to spend $40,000 don't make a big difference. https://twitter.com/teslamotorsjp/status/1361939264716427265?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1361939264716427265%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdriveteslacanada.ca%2Fmodel-3%2Ftesla-drops-prices-model-3-japan-by-as-much-as-24%2F https://www.investors.com/news/tesla-stock-model-3-model-y-prices-slashed-amid-ev-competition/?src=A00220 ALL-ELECTRIC VOLVO XC RECHARGE CONFIRMED FOR AUSTRALIA IN MID-2021 "The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric will be launched in Australia in August, Volvo’s Australian arm has confirmed. The all-electric compact SUV will be launched shortly after the arrival of its plug-in hybrid stablemate, and will be the Swedish-Chinese carmaker’s first electric passenger car to reach the Australian auto market." reports TheDrive.io: "With a 72.5kWh battery (usable capacity) offering around 325km real-world driving range, the all-electric XC40 Recharge promises to offer a hefty 660Nm torque from its 300kW motors, and is expected to fall just above the Tesla Model 3 in terms of price. It will join a limited, but gradually widening, electric vehicle market in Australia to compete against the Mercedes-Benz EQC and the Jaguar I-Pace." https://thedriven.io/2021/02/17/all-electric-volvo-xc-recharge-confirmed-for-australia-in-mid-2021/ NEW NISSAN QASHQAI - 'FAKE' EV Hot off selling 34,000 units in the UK last year, in a Covid year remember, they have revealed the new Qashqai. "The 2021 Qashqai comes following Nissan’s recent announcement that it has sold over one million crossovers in the UK alone since the first generation Qashqai launched back in 2007." reports AutoExpress: "it differs from hybrid systems used in cars like the Toyota Prius because the combustion unit never drives the wheels directly. Instead, it acts as a generator, providing charge to a small battery, which then sends energy to the electric motor. According to Nissan, this gives the e-Power unit characteristics we’ve come to expect from fully electric vehicles, such as instant torque delivery and seamless acceleration." "Nissan is in line with current mainstream thinking in not offering a diesel engine. Instead, buyers, leasers and PCP-ers can choose from a 1.3-litre mild-hybrid and a range-extender hybrid called e-Power." says Car magazine: "This innovative drivetrain option is set to roll out in the Qashqai in 2022. It's a traditional hybrid in that there's no plug-in option. It's a parallel hybrid set-up where the engine is effectively a generator used to charge the battery pack, which then powers the electric motor to drive the wheels. Nissan says the e-Power Qashqai will enjoy the throttle response of an EV and even comes with Nissan's 'e-Pedal' technology that first debuted on the Mk2 Nissan Leaf. Backing off the throttle will deliver up to 0.2g of regenerative deceleration. The 1.5-litre petrol engine in the E-Power version features a variable compression ratio and is tuned for maximum efficiency when delivering charge to the battery pack. " "The e-Power techology has been seen on Japan-only Note superminis but it is the first time it has been introduced in Europe. Nissan has beefed up the system for the Qashqai, though." says Sunday Times Driving "The other two powertrain options available for the new Qashqai are both 1.3-litre petrols with mild hybrid technology. "Designer Matt Weaver said the shift to electrified-only powertrains influenced the new Qashqai’s styling because it necessitated a heightened focus on aerodynamics, highlighting the front-end’s vertical air channels and the car's slightly tapered shape as a key differentiator over the previous, non-electrified car." according to Autocar: "Chosen to offer greater affordability over a 48V system, the 12V set-up recovers energy under deceleration to power on-board systems when the engine is stopped and provide a small torque boost when accelerating." Whatcar wasn't impressed by the engine: "Unusually for a range extender, the e-Power’s pure electric range is tiny – just 1.8 miles – meaning the engine has to run most of the time, instead of just being there as a back-up. But Nissan claims that it’s able to run at lower revs than the engine in a conventional hybrid when starting up and accelerating, making it quieter and more efficient; official fuel economy figures are still to be announced." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/qashqai/103735/new-2021-nissan-qashqai-revealed-hybrid-powertrain https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/nissan/qashqai/ https://www.driving.co.uk/news/new-cars/nissan-reveals-2021-qashqai-suv/ https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/all-electrified-2021-nissan-qashqai-brings-bold-new-look https://www.whatcar.com/news/2021-nissan-qashqai-revealed-full-details-and-exclusive-pics/n22676 https://europe.nissaanews.com/en-GB/releases/all-new-nissan-qashqai TEXAS FORD F-150 HYBRID OWNERS USING GENERATOR FUNCTIONS TO WEATHER THE STORM "With Texas, the biggest truck market in the country, currently in the middle of a nasty winter storm and subsequent widespread power outages, we've been wondering if anyone has put the generator capabilities of the 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid to the test. The answer is, unsurprisingly, yes. A few users at F150Gen14.com shared photos and experiences using the generator function, and they're all rather glowing." says Autoblog: "The truck's large fuel tank meant he could run it a long time without refueling, which could have been an issue as local gas pumps weren't working. We would bet that the truck also produces far fewer emissions than those outdoor generators, too. All of these owners said they had purchased the hybrid with the upgraded 7.2-kW generator capability, though all hybrids come standard with 2.4-kW generator ability." PLus: "Ford asks Texas dealers to loan out F-150s with ProPower onboard generators". And those with home storage such as Tesla Powerwalls and other brands have also found how invaluable home storage can me. The Honda E has an 1.5kW AC socket to tap into it's 35.5kWh battery. https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/18/2022-ford-f150-powerboost-hybrid-generator-texas-winter-blackout/ https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/powerboost-7-2kw-onboard-generator-saves-the-day-3-days-during-texas-power-outage.1826/ BENTLEY TO OFFER ONLY ELECTRIC OR HYBRID CARS BY 2026 "Electrification is becoming more commonplace within car manufacturers as we near the deadline for the UK government's ban on the sale of all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 - and Bentley is no exception." says Drivetribe: "The high-end automaker has this week announced that it is concentrating on researching and developing sustainable and recyclable electric motors, in a bid to assist the legislatorial requirement for automakers to cease production of petrol and diesel cars from 2030 in order to avoid any hefty fines coming their way. As it stands, Bentley are due to release PHEV versions of the much-loved Continental GT and the status symbol that is of course, the Flying Spur. We also continue to wait in anticipation of Bentley announcing it's first fully-electric model in 2025 - hopefully the EXP 100 GT will be looked back in history as something exemplar in having changed the course of the design for Bentley's future models." https://drivetribe.com/p/bentley-to-offer-only-electric-eJUzXojwTUyEd-0xi4l8ag https://www.bentley-press.be/bentley-sets-out-path-to-sustainable-recyclable-electric-motors NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK With my 1000th podcast around the corner, what kind of media coverage do you want in 2021? Interest rates may have been slashed to the bone in the wake of the coronavirus crisis but the threat of a dive into negative rates has remained. This week, however, the Bank of England opted to stick at 0.1 per cent and upgraded its view on the economy for this year, saying GDP will only fall by a worst-in-a-century 9.5 per cent rather than a worst in 300-odd years 14.4 per cent. It also hinted that negative rates could do more harm than good, so does that mean a base rate below zero is off the table for the UK? On this week’s podcast, Simon Lambert and Georgie Frost discuss negative rates: what’s the point, do they have any positives and beyond costing savers’ interest how would they prove harmful? They also talk gold and why the price of the precious metal has soared 35 per cent this year, to rise above the $2,000 mark and whether it can keep going. For goldbugs it is a long-term store of value, a safe haven and a hedge against inflation, but will fears of bumper inflation at the end of the decade prove unfounded - and is part of the gold price sentiment-driven in the same way Tesla shares are? Buying gold and taking rates negative are seen as glass-half-empty measures, but are things brighter than we think? The housing market is doing better than expected, car sales have posted a surprise 11 per cent annual rise and Britain went mad for eating out at the start of the week, thanks to Rishi Sunak’s discount deals. Are these indicators of a V-shaped recovery? The job losses that continue to pile up will weigh on that and the team have tips on what to do if you are made redundant or it is a threat. And finally, if you do fancy splashing out and have your eye on a new car, you might think it is time go electric. Simon runs through What Car?’s new special awards for the best electric cars in every category.
Show #746 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 12th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. BMW 7 SERIES ELECTRIC RUMORED TO HAVE AT LEAST 650 HORSEPOWER "When BMW announced the beefiest version of the next-generation 7er will have zero emissions, it didn’t disclose any details about the power delivered by its electric motors. Now, our pals at BMWBLOG claim to be in the know about the hottest version of the fullsize luxury sedan." says Motor1: "Rumored to be called Mi7 or i7 M60, the range-topping 7 Series is said to have at least two electric motors delivering a combined output of 650+ horsepower or about 50 hp more than the M760i. The report goes on to mention the flagship 7 Series will have a large battery pack with a capacity of over 100 kWh for a range between charges of up to 400 miles (644 kilometers). It won’t be the only M Performance version as below it will reportedly sit a plug-in hybrid model tentatively called M750e with a turbocharged straight-six 3.0-liter combined with an electric motor. The electric derivatives will have some stiff competition coming from existing models such as the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S as well as from the upcoming Audi E-Tron GT, Jaguar XJ, and the Mercedes EQS." https://www.motor1.com/news/408983/bmw-7-series-electric-power/ InsideEVs has more info on the pack sizes: “Regarding the i7, there will apparently be (at least) two variants. One will draw juice from an 80 kWh battery pack while another will have an even bigger 120 kWh pack; this should take it up to 600 km (385 miles) on a single charge, and there’s a good change it will only be offered in the long-wheelbase model in order to actually have enough room for the pack to fit.” https://insideevs.com/news/409390/bmw-i7-rendering-all-we-know/ HOT PLUG-IN HYBRID VOLKSWAGEN T-ROC GTE "The Volkswagen T-Roc range could potentially be bolstered by a high-performance GTE version in future, should the market produce sufficient demand" says Auto Express: "When asked during a press conference call if a performance plug-in hybrid for the T-Roc would be a good fit, VW’s Project Manager for Electrified Drivetrains, Dr Kai Philipp, said: “Our MQB technology gives us the possibility to do so.”Power would come from the petrol-electric powertrain that’s widely used across the Volkswagen Group. A 1.4-litre turbocharged engine is paired with an electric motor, which is capable of producing as much as 242bhp in the new 2020 Golf. However, the GTE would be more efficient than either: the 13kWh battery should enable an electric-only range of around 40 mile." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/hybrid-cars/352045/hot-plug-hybrid-volkswagen-t-roc-gte-cards CONSTRUCTION OF TESLA GIGAFACTORY 4 REPORTEDLY POSTPONED "After the super quick pace of work at the Tesla Gigafactory 4 (aka Giga Berlin) site in Grünheide, near Berlin in Germany, the activity now is almost frozen. Some were saying that Tesla is waiting for a permit, but the latest reports indicate that the company is revising its construction plan." says InsideEVs: "Tesla previously completed clearing the tree farm and ground leveling. The next stage would be the foundation, which seems to be postponed. Torque News reports: "We just got breaking news from Tesla Giga Berlin. Brandenburg’s public radio RBB 24 reports that Tesla has to postpone the construction of the foundation for its Gigafactory 4 in Grunheide, outside of Berlin." According to the State Environment Agency, Tesla wants to revise the approval documents on one more point: In response to criticism from local residents, the company had announced that the factory should use less water than originally planned." https://insideevs.com/news/408936/construction-gigafactory-4-postponed/ LORDSTOWN MOTORS SHOWS ENDURANCE ELECTRIC PICKUP'S IN-WHEEL MOTORS IN ACTION "Several automakers, from Ford to Tesla, are planning to launch electric pickup trucks, but startup company Lordstown Motors will have something that sets its Endurance pickup apart from the rest—in-wheel electric motors. A new video shows one of the in-wheel motors in action." says Motor Authority: "Mounting the motors inside the wheel hub frees up space, and offers the potential to more precisely control how much torque is sent to a wheel. Torque can be added or subtracted by adjusting the amount of current going to the motor, rather than using the clutch packs, differentials, or brake applications typically used to adjust torque split. Lordstown says the Endurance carries a base price of $52,500. It is accepting $1,000 refundable deposits for early build slots. In comparison, Tesla says its Cybertruck starts at $39,900. Lordstown has said it will start deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2020. Lordstown is also targeting commercial fleets, while the Cybertruck is aimed at individual retail buyers." As a result of increased supply, its lead time has been halved to 26 weeks. The longest wait is on Porsche’s first electric car, the Taycan (36 weeks), followed by the Seat Mii electric and Skoda Citigo e IV (26 weeks). But as I've got a long weekend off I'm leaving it at 80% . But in the past I've had the leaf plugged in at 100% for 3/4 days. Holidays when I've flown from the airport 30 miles away left it for two weeks at 60/70% . TBH I don't think it matters short term. Eg long weekend. But longer term week to two weeks plus I would say leave around 80% . Just my experience of 3yrs EV driving Ybe EV • 2 days ago Hi Martyn, Regarding your question of the week. I keep my Nissan Leaf connected up to my V2G charger. I have set it to charge to maximum of 95% and discharge to minimum of 25%. It tends to do one full cycle over a 24 hour period. I have been on the OVO V2G trial in the UK since July 2019 and have seen no significant battery degradation in that time. The current lockdown just means the car spends more time connected to the V2G charger and goes some small way to help smooth out the demand peaks. The best part is that I have had basically free electricity for my home and EV since the trial began :-) Chris Avram Car models may have special needs in layup. Chevy/Holden Volt Amperra will only maintain the 12 Volt battery if it is "rumning" or plugged in. Cant choose SOC so mine sits plugged in at 100% SOC = 85 % REAL. Also need to run it for 10 minutes on gas every month or so. Fabian Bonasera • 5 days ago We're keeping our 2013 Nissan LEAF at 80%. We're not sure if we should keep it plugged in all the time or not. We are still driving it 1 or 2 days a week for small trips, so we could charge just one night every week if that's better for the battery's health Victor Wood I parked up my Ioniq with about 75% charge as that’s what it was at when I last parked it. Once every couple of weeks I will go to the (remotely located garage) and change it’s parked position and leave the car on for 15 minutes to recharge the 12v battery. Tbh the 12v battery worries me more than the HV battery. Kenz300 x • 6 days ago If the car is parked for a long time leave it at 50-60% no more. Bill B Our Audi E Tron is setting @ 79 miles in the garage, here in FL USA. Probably not going anywhere for a while. Getting groceries delivered. PETER GLASS The BMW i3 manual is pretty clear. If you are leaving the car for over 3months then it should be plugged in. It has so little vampire drain that as long as it’s on reasonably high charge frankly there’s nothing really to worry about. There is no facility to set a charging limit, e.g. 80%, like a Tesla or Kona so you’d have to unplug manually at the right time if you wanted to leave it short of 100%. One important thing is, the i3 battery management has ‘passive cell balancing’ which is best done at 100% [it does happen at high charge but what level is unclear] so having the car idle is an opportunity to leave it balancing and getting a deep sleep. [The manual is equally clear about not leaving the car on low charge. What is low? Well, it won’t let you turn on the heaters while sitting waiting at a rapid charger if it’s under 12%, so clearly the BMS is unhappy there. I drove back from Poole in 2017 with only 6 or 7% left and didn’t charge it back up for over a day – I’m sure the car emailed me it was unhappy, but I can’t remember for sure…!!]. I think most EVs need to be concerned about is their 12Volt batteries and it’s worth waking up the car, switching it on for say 20mins letting the DC to DC converter do it’s work [especially if they are a few years old]. I expect the i3 manual on the 3month lay up is thinking about this issue. RAJEEV NARAYAN I’m a physician so I’m driving 80 miles a day or more! In the past however when I have left the EV for a week or so, I left the battery at about 50% under the assumption that the battery dislikes extreme states of charge or discharge. QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV industry help people get driving electric as soon as this is all over? I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 237 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #437 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 8th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER TIM GUTTERIDGE. TESLA ADDS MORE ATARI GAMES TO ITS DASHBOARD "Tesla [has] added a pair of new old Atari games to the lineup you can play on its cars' dashboard display. When Model S, X and 3 owners update their software, they'll be able to play 2048 and Super Breakout." says Sean Keane for CNET Roadshow: "The company added the initial batch of TeslAtari games last August, and ...later removed racer Pole Position because it "couldn't resolve all the rights issues," CEO Elon Musk tweeted last month. So now the list of games, as noted by Mashable, consists of: 2048, Super Breakout, Missile Command, Asteroids, Lunar Lander and Centipede." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-adds-more-atari-games-to-its-dashboard/ ELON MUSK EXPLAINS WHY THERE IS A CAMERA INSIDE OF THE TESLA MODEL 3 "Back in 2017 we learned that the Tesla Model 3 has an inactive camera above the rearview mirror looking into the car. Seems ... creepy. Well, recently on Twitter, CEO Elon Musk revealed what that camera is doing there." reports Mashable. Elon said on Twitter: "It’s there for when we start competing with Uber/Lyft & people allow their car to earn money for them as part of the Tesla shared autonomy fleet. In case someone messes up your car, you can check the video." @MarcelFeldkamp "It's hard to wrap my head around a future where my car might be earning me money through autonomous driving while I'm asleep in my bed or play video games but here we are." @elonmusk "That’s exactly the idea. What’s not well understood is that Tesla cars being made *today* will be able to do that for you. Just a matter of finishing the software & going through regulatory approval. Will be explained in depth via live webcast on April 22." https://mashable.com/shopping/april-6-barisieur-coffee-maker-alarm-clock/?europe=true#P7Voci11xOqJ ELON MUSK MAKES PRIVATE VISIT TO BUFFALO TESLA PLANT "That really was Elon Musk who stopped by the Tesla Inc. solar panel factory in Buffalo on Friday. Musk, Tesla's chairman and CEO, visited the South Park Avenue factory Friday, a Tesla spokeswoman confirmed. She did not elaborate on what Musk did here or offer any other details of the visit. She said Musk, who has never made a public visit to Buffalo, would not be speaking to local media while he is here." reports one of those local media The Buffalo Times: "The Buffalo solar panel factory, built and partially equipped by the state with $750 million in taxpayer money as part of the Buffalo Billion economic development program, has taken far longer than expected to develop as Tesla's solar energy business has shrunk and the company has focused most of its resources on its electric vehicle business. The plant, which Tesla has pledged will employ 1,460 people by April 2020, currently has fewer than 800 workers after a companywide round of job cuts earlier this year." https://buffalonews.com/2019/04/05/there-was-an-elon-musk-sighting-in-buffalo-today/ L.A. COULD REPLACE TRADITIONAL POWER PLANTS WITH HOME SOLAR "Renewable energy experts and a new report from the solar industry say Los Angeles could generate a larger portion of its electricity with wider use of residential solar panels backed up by battery storage." says Dennis Romero: "The concept of a "virtual power plant" that could replace one of three natural gas plants being phased out by the city has already been deployed successfully in Orange County and Waltham, Vermont. But Los Angeles, where officials want to rely entirely on renewable energy by 2050, would be the largest U.S. city to go virtual." Sunrun CEO Lynn Jurich: ""What we can do is if we can put a battery with each one of those solar systems, we can link them with software and when the utility needs that power, it can be dispatched from 75,000 homes. They can replace the energy of one of those gas-power plants and be more cost effective." https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/l-could-replace-traditional-power-plants-home-solar-experts-say-n991606 LONDON PREPARES FOR LAUNCH OF ULTRA-LOW EMISSIONS ZONE "London is preparing to enforce “world-leading” vehicle pollution restrictions from Monday as the capital attempts to clean up the toxic air blamed for thousands of premature deaths. The ultra-low emission zone, or Ulez, will launch at one minute past midnight on April 8, imposing a £12.50-a-day charge to drive into central London in all but the cleanest cars and vans." reports The UK Guardian newspaper: "The move is expected to reduce road transport emissions by around 45%. The mayor, Sadiq Khan, unveiled research showing that almost 1,000 people a year in the city were hospitalised with asthma caused by pollution. The charge will be levied inside London’s congestion charge zone around the clock, and motorists driving polluting cars during the daytime will have to pay both charges, meaning it will cost £24 to take such vehicles into central London between 7am and 6pm. Currently more than 2 million people in London – including more than 400,000 children – live in areas where the air quality breaks legal limits for nitrogen dioxide. At present, air quality breaches legal limits at 451 schools." https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/apr/06/london-prepares-for-launch-of-ultra-low-emissions-zone https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle-35896 BMW BOARD MEMBER OUTLINES MINI'S LONG-TERM ELECTRIFICATION PLAN Peter Schwarzenbauer has led the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands to record sales during his six years as the BMW Group board member in charge of the brands. Starting this month, he takes on a new role within the automaker as the board member whose primary focus is to continue the group's electrification shift. He talked about the new Mini Electric with Automotive News Europe Correspondent Christiaan Hetzner: "We haven't revealed any details yet. We want to save that for when we get ready to debut the series production version, which will be before the Frankfurt auto show [in September]. Assembly in Oxford begins in the second half of this year and the market rollout is slated for early 2020." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/bmw-board-member-outlines-minis-long-term-electrification-plan ELECTRIFIED MODELS NAMED AS BEST FOR HOLDING THEIR VALUE "Electric and hybrid vehicles are now the best vehicles on the road for holding their value, according to new research. Figures from What Car? showed that out of the top 10 vehicles that hold their value the best, five were electrified in one way or another." reports AOL: "Measuring a vehicle's potential worth over three years and 30,000 miles, electrified models retained 47 per cent of their value on average – compared with 43 and 40 per cent for petrol and diesel options respectively. All bar two of the worst-performing vehicles were diesel, showing just how far the fuel type has fallen out of favour with UK car buyers." https://www.aol.co.uk/living/2019/04/05/electrified-models-named-as-best-for-holding-their-value/ 2019 HYUNDAI KONA EV IS AN ELECTRIC CAR FOR EVERYONE Consumer Reports are having a love-in with the Kona Electric: "It doesn’t have a gimmick, it doesn’t feel tinny or look goofy, and it has a range long enough that it should allow you to travel to work and back—and then some. It’s just a practical car that happens to be electric." https://www.consumerreports.org/hybrids-evs/2019-hyundai-kona-ev-first-drive-review/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to three new Patreon supporters. PRODUCER IAN GRIFFITHS, and EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS NATHAN GORE-BROWN and RALPH JENSON CANADA ANNOUNCES NEW $5,000 INCENTIVE FOR ELECTRIC CARS "As part of its new budget, the Canadian federal government has announced a new $5,000 incentive for electric cars that cost less than $45,000, however, it excludes Tesla vehicles." Says Fred at Electrek today: "Some Canadian provinces already have EV incentive programs but unlike the US, there has never been a federal program to reduce the cost of electric vehicles. With the launch of their latest budget, the Canadian government has now announced a new $5,000 incentive program that is not yet completed. The $45,000 cut off point covers vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt EV, and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, but all of Tesla’s vehicles are excluded since the base Model 3 starts at $47,000 CAD." The budget says: "“To encourage more Canadians to buy zero-emission vehicles, Budget 2019 proposes to provide $300 million over three years, starting in 2019–20, to Transport Canada to introduce a new federal purchase incentive of up to $5,000 for electric battery or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000. Program details to follow.”" https://electrek.co/2019/03/19/canada-incentive-electric-cars-tesla-excluded/ BMW INEXT PRODUCTION SUV SPIED PLAYING IN THE SNOW com are delighted to get a long video of the new electric BMW: "Our spies were once again in the right place at the right time and had the chance to film the production version of BMW’s iNext electric SUV testing under heavy winter conditions in Sweden. This 5:47-minute video gives us a pretty good look at the vehicle’s dynamics with plenty of accelerations and even some high-speed cornering maneuvers." "The iNext, which might end up being called the i5, will be the electric equivalent of today’s BMW X5 in terms of its dimensions. It will be the Bavarian brand’s most technologically advanced vehicle when it debuts in 2021. Before it, the company will launch the iX3 and i4, in 2019 and 2020 respectively. https://www.motor1.com/news/314022/bmw-inext-spied-video/ GERMANY IS BIGGEST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET IN EUROPE SO FAR IN 2019 "Sales reports for the first two months of 2019 shows that Germany is now the biggest market for all-electric cars in Europe, dethroning Norway." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEV: "It had to happen at some point anyway, as Norway is so much smaller than Germany in population. Norway – at best – can double its BEV sales, reaching 100% BEV market share, while Germany can increase 50-times from less than 2% share to 100%." According to data compiled by industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de) the top 5 countries in Europe ranked by electric car sales for 2019 so far are: Germany – ≈9,300 Norway – ≈7,900 France – ≈5,900 Netherlands – ≈4,600 UK – ≈2,100 https://insideevs.com/germany-biggest-ev-market-europe/ VOLKSWAGEN THREATENS TO LEAVE GERMANY’S CAR LOBBY VDA IN SPAT OVER E-CARS German carmaker Volkswagen has threatened to quit the country’s influential carmaker lobby group VDA as a dispute over the national car industry’s approach to managing the transition in the transport sector towards low-carbon technologies escalates, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag reports. According to the article, Volkswagen wants the lobby group to budge from its rigid insistence on “technological openness” in the transition and to fully focus instead on electric vehicles. According to cleanenergywire.org: "Volkswagen last week announced it would further accelerate its already ambitious rollout plans for electric mobility. The company that still grapples with the fallout of the dieselgate scandal over manipulated emissions values plans to produce more than 20 million e-cars in the next decade and become fully CO2-neutral by 2050. " https://www.cleanenergywire.org/news/volkswagen-threatens-leave-germanys-car-lobby-vda-spat-over-e-cars Penske Tests Fuso eCanter Electric Truck In California "Daimler delivered the first Fuso eCanter electric truck to Penske Truck Leasing for urban delivery in California." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs today: "In December, Penske received also the first out of ten Freightliner eM2s for testing and is waiting for the 10 Freightliner eCascadia heavy-duty trucks. All the vehicles are to be evaluated in real-world service by various companies to prepare for truck electrification." https://insideevs.com/penske-truck-fuso-ecanter-electric-truck/ CHINA'S EVERGRANDE SAYS IT WILL START MAKING ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN JUNE "Chinese property firm Evergrande Group will start producing its first electric vehicles in June as part of a goal to become the world's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) company within the next three to five years, according to its chairman." Says a Reuters report today: "Hui Ka Yan made the comments at a conference in the eastern city of Tianjin over the weekend, according to a statement published on the company's website on Tuesday. He also said that Evergrande plans to start selling its first electric vehicle model globally "soon," which will use electric car production technology from Swedish car makers Saab and Koenigsegg, and drive systems from Netherlands' e-Traction, according to the statement." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/19/china-evergrande-ev-production/ AUDI Q2 E-TRON ELECTRIC CAR CAUGHT TESTING IN THE SNOW "New spy shots provide the very first look at the Audi Q2 E-Tron, which is the fully electric version of the brand’s compact crossover. This one wears some snow as extra concealment, but the images still provide an excellent look at the upcoming EV." According to Chris Bruce for InsideEVs.com today: "Powertrain specs for the electric model are a complete mystery at this point. Speculation indicates the company is aiming for at least a 310-mile (500-kilometer) range on a charge. A recent report suggests that Audi might only sell the Q2 E-Tron in China, and the company might make a long-wheelbase L model exclusively for that market, too." https://insideevs.com/audi-q2-e-tron-electric-car-spy-photo/ LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND INFORMATION IS PREVENTING MOTORISTS FROM TAKING THE EV PLUNGE Conflicting and confusing information on the latest generation of battery electric vehicles has created a ‘knowledge gap’ for potential buyers, holding them back from choosing an EV as their next purchase, a new White Paper from the UK’s leading consumer champion and new car buying platform, What Car? has found. This is despite 2019 being set to become the year of the electric vehicle, with up to 20 new models scheduled to be launched. Meanwhile, whatcar.com traffic data suggests public interest in EVs is at record levels. In a study of over 9000 motorists, What Car? found 8.4% are already considering a fully electric car as their next vehicle. The What Car? What Fuel? comparison tool, with 80,000 users, also found EVs are already an optimal choice for one in 10 drivers. In comparison, the UK market share of fully electric vehicles was only 0.7% in 2018, meaning electric vehicle sales are achieving just 7% of their sales potential. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. And welcome to the party our newest member of the gang – and Producer of the show on Patreon - EDUARD PERTÍÑEZ WHAT CAR? NAMES KIA-ENIRO AS 'CAR OF THE YEAR' One of the curiosities of any car of the year award is how forward looking they are, and so yes it's amusing that a car which has delivered less than 1,000 in Europe can officially be the best car. But let's not understate the importance of a major magazine putting an electric car top of the pile. So I'll start with the big one, the overall car of the. The Kia e-Niro. As the editor Steve Huntingford says: "there are almost 4000 variations of around 400 cars listed in the data section at the back of this magazine, but after 12 months of testing we've whittled them down to the best in each class, with one of those standing out above all others as our 2019 Car Of The Year". So why did it win? They said: "The BMW 3 SERIES would have made a worthy overall winner, having overcome a former Car of the Year to take class honours, while the Citroën Berlingo and Cupra Ateca were also strong contenders. However, those cars have had the misfortune to be launched in the same year as Kia’s game-changing e-Niro. Put simply, the e-Niro beats its rivals via knockout rather than on points, because it’s the first sensibly priced electric car that can fit into most people’s lives. Its huge real-world range helps, allowing you to get to where you’re going without any fear that you’ll end up stranded by the roadside. But it also makes a very practical family car, comes loaded with luxuries and strikes just the right balance of comfort and composure. In short, the Kia e-Niro is a stunning achievement." Winner - Less Than £30,000 Renault Zoe: "Our 2017 ELECTRIC Car of the Year remains a compelling proposition two years on – and that’s some achievement, given the pace at which things are moving in this class. Chief among the Renault Zoe’s appeal is still its low price. But unlike other sub-£25k pure electric options, such as the Smart Fortwo EQ, you don’t have to put up with a feeble range. In fact, in our Real Range tests, the Zoe outperformed many much pricier options by managing 146 miles on a full charge. You can opt to buy the Zoe outright (that’s the ‘i’ model), but we reckon you’re better off buying just the car and leasing the battery from Renault. Why? Well, you’ll pay a much smaller up-front cost, and you’ll also benefit from a lifetime battery warranty, so you won’t need to worry about the potential of a huge bill in the future if the car’s range starts to tail off due to battery degradation. We’d go for the R110 model over the Q90 version for three reasons: it’s a bit cheaper and faster, plus you get a slightly longer range. The only downside is it’ll take you 1hr 40min to recharge from 0-80% via a 43kW rapid charger; the Q90 can manage that in 1hr 5min." Winner More THan £60,000 - Jaguar I-PACE EV400 S: "Tesla has made this price point its own over the past five years, so it’s a measure of Jaguar’s achievement that it has managed to topple the American brand at the first time of trying. The Jaguar I-Pace has all the ingredients you’d expect from a £64,000 Jaguar – and more. It’s fantastic to drive, unnervingly quick (0-60mph takes 4.5sec) and has an interior that’s far more impressive to look at and touch than those in Jaguar’s regular models. It also delivers a better real-world range than Tesla’s Model S 75D and is cheaper to buy. If you want your I-Pace dripping with luxuries (and we wouldn’t blame you), SE or even HSE trim is worth a look, but entry-level S trim makes the most sense. You don’t need to bother with optional air suspension, although you’ll probably want to pick a couple of creature comforts from the options list. Yes, it’s still pricey, and yes, it’s a shame there’s no Tesla-style 120kW Supercharger network to recharge your I-Pace in 30-odd minutes. But it is compatible with the new 100kW charging points that are just starting to appear, so an 80% charge within 45 minutes will soon be possible." Winner Best Hybrid - Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Winner Plug In Hybrid = Volvo XC90 T8 Winner What Car? Reader Award 2019 - "Judging by the crowds that packed Honda’s stand at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, the Urban EV was a popular car from its very first outing – so popular, in fact, that Honda confirmed a production version of the concept before the dust had even settled. What Car? readers clearly can’t get enough of it, either, because the Urban EV garnered almost eight times as many votes as our second-placed car. Put simply, it’s by far the car you’re most excited about seeing in 2019. And so you should be, because the Urban EV is shaping up to be a true game-changer for Honda. It’s the brand’s first electric car to be sold in Europe, and with it being shorter than its Jazz stablemate yet potentially even more spacious inside, as well as having an electric range of around 155 miles, it will be ideally suited to city streets. There’s a large digital screen for the instruments and infotainment system, plus smaller screens that show feeds from two cameras mounted on the car’s exterior in place of door mirrors." DAIMLER ADD BATTERY FACTORY IN POLAND In the course of the electric initiative Mercedes-Benz Cars will build a battery factory at the polish site in Jawor and thus extend the global battery production network of up to nine factories. Markus Schäfer, Member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "“We will electrify the complete portfolio until 2022 and will be able to offer in each segment various electrified alternatives to our customers. This includes more than ten pure electric vehicles. We will produce batteries on our own, what we consider a significant success factor in the era of electric mobility. After the production of high-tech engines, we will establish additional future technology in Poland. The battery factory in Jawor is the second largest investment at this new Mercedes-Benz site.” With the construction of a battery factory on the existing ground at the site approximately 300 new jobs will be created. The battery assembly will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies. The series production of batteries for vehicles of the product and technology brand EQ is slated at the beginning of the next decade. They say: "Daimler is buying the cells on the world market and is instructing the suppliers to produce based on special specifications. In this way, the company is securing itself the best possible technology. With the purchase of battery cells for more than 20 billion euros, the company is establishing the preconditions for the consistent change towards an electrical future" https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/New-site-in-the-global-battery-production-network-Mercedes-Benz-Cars-to-build-battery-factory-in-Jawor-Poland.xhtml AUDI PROVIDING 50 E-TRON SHUTTLES AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM "Audi, as the exclusive shuttle partner for World Economic Forum in Davos since 1987, is providing a fleet of 50 e-tron electric cars for shuttle service. This year World Economic Forum takes place on January 22 to 25." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "The cars are powered by green electricity, through specially installed charging station with IONITY DC fast chargers and AC charging stands. On top of that is a 1.14 MWh/700 kW energy storage system in the form of mobile charging containers." https://insideevs.com/audi-50-e-tron-shuttles-world-economic-forum-in-davos/ TESLA ROLLS BACK SUPERCHARGER PRICE INCREASES TO APPEASE OWNERS Staying with InsdieEVs: "According to Electrek’s analysis, Tesla hoped to increase average pricing for Supercharging by some 33 percent as a whole. This number is not specific to all markets, since the automaker planned to adjust pricing based on local electricity costs, as well as area-based demand." says Steven Loveday: "Some were even going so far as to do the math, which showed that Supercharging could end up costing nearly as much as gassing up in some markets. Additionally, charging at some other non-Tesla stations could be cheaper. The truth of the matter is if people cancel their reservations due to this adaptation, Tesla could be in a much more dire situation. So, the money gained by increasing rates could easily be lost due to decreasing sales. Obviously, Tesla took notice of the contention on social media and forums, likely crunched some numbers, and decided that this plan is not going to work. Less than a week later, the automaker decided to dial back the price hike by some 10 percent worldwide." https://insideevs.com/tesla-rolls-back-supercharger-price-increases/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. TOYOTA, PANASONIC TO SET UP EV BATTERY JV IN 2020 Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Panasonic Corp (6752.T) are set to launch a joint venture next year to produce batteries for electric vehicles (EV) in an effort to compete with Chinese rivals, a source familiar with the matter said." according to a Reuters report: "The joint venture, to be owned 51 percent by Toyota and the rest by Panasonic, could also provide batteries to Toyota’s EV technology partners Mazda Corp (7261.T) and Subaru Corp (7270.T), the source said on Sunday. Under a planned joint venture, Panasonic would shift most of its prismatic battery-related equipment and facilities in Japan and China to the joint venture, while those producing batteries for U.S. EV maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) will remain under the company, the source said." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-toyota-panasonic-idUKKCN1PE05R RENAULT ENDS YEAR 2018 ON A HIGH The end of the year for Renault was pretty significant as French manufacturer reports sales of 7,000 all-electric cars in December, which is not only 77% more than a year ago, but also an all-time record" says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "Outstanding results are the fruit of record sales of both, the ZOE and Kangoo Z.E. Here are numbers for December and the full year (excluding Twizy): Renault ZOE – 5,611 (up 61%) and 40,508 YTD (up 27%), Renault Kangoo Z.E. – 1,363 (up 196%) and 9,004 YTD (up 107%), Renault Master Z.E. – 26 and 102 YTD (new)." https://insideevs.com/renault-sold-record-electric-cars-december/ ELECTREK REVIEW JAGUAR I-PACE Fred Lambert spent 4 days in the I-PACE and has a pretty long review on Electrek. His conclusion: "There’s a lot to like about the I-Pace. I think it’s one of the best-looking vehicle out there period. The range is going to be good enough for most people, especially if you plan to use it to get around a city, but I think it would be hard to take the vehicle on a road trip that requires more than two full charges at least until the non-Tesla charging infrastructure with over 100 kW of capacity becomes more extensive. It’s starting to be the case in Europe but less so in the US, and I think that will be reflected in the sales of the I-Pace – though the US could eventually catch up with a few new networks coming up. I think the I-Pace would make a great family vehicle as long as you are not expecting the space of a full-size SUV." https://electrek.co/2019/01/20/jaguar-i-pace-review/ 2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC ARRIVES THIS SEPTEMBER WITH MORE RANGE "The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Hyundai IONIQ will receive their facelift first in July, two months later the electric version will get its." report Pedro at PushEVs: "The battery capacity will increase from 28 to 38,3 kWh (37 %), while the range will increase from 280 to 378 km (NEDC), matching the Nissan LEAF’s (40 kWh version) range. The fact that the battery capacity increases by 37 % while the range increases “only” by 35 % makes me conclude that the battery is slightly heavier, contributing for a minor efficiency decrease. Nonetheless, the ranges that matter are the realistic ones, by this I mean the WLTP and EPA. While the WLTP range should increase from 204 to 277 km, the EPA range should increase from 124 to 168 miles. I would say that 300 km (186 miles) in the summer and 250 km (155 miles) in the winter will be easily achieved." COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. The future of motoring looks set to be increasingly electric with the Government committed to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040. That commitment was strengthened this month with the unveiling of a new Road to Zero strategy aimed at boosting the country's electric vehicle infrastructure with proposals including fitting chargers in new developments, offices and even lampposts. But how does buying and running an electric car compare to petrol and diesel and what might you have to consider when making the switch? Electricity can certainly be cheaper than traditional fuels but how do you navigate the range of charging options available? There're also a number of Government grants to consider- what's on offer and how can you apply? Joining Paul Lewis are Consumer Editor at What Car?, Claire Evans, Head of Go Ultra Low, Poppy Welch and Director of Zap Map, Melanie Shufflebotham. Should you cash in on your home to help yourself or your kids? As a generation retires with more money in their houses than the bank, this question will only become more pressing. And it’s been a topic of much debate on This is Money this week, as we revealed how a new wave of retirement interest-only mortgages could be about to emerge. Homeowners could use one to have a more comfortable retirement, clear some debt, or hand the kids or grandkids an early inheritance – perhaps to buy a home for their own young family. Is that a good idea or a recipe for disaster – and how did we even end up here? In a conversation that tracks all the way back to the mortgage boom of the Thatcher years, Simon Lambert, Rachel Rickard Straus and Georgie Frost dive into the homes as a cash machine question on this week’s podcast. Plus, they also take a look at what happens when an inheritance doesn’t materialise as thought – can you contest a will if it’s all left to the dogs’ home. The TSB meltdown is also up for discussion, including why it happened, what next and what people’s rights are. And finally, we’re fans of money saving at This is Money and value for money – so a luxury car for the price of a Ford Fiesta sounds pretty good. Big luxury cars depreciate hard, but that is good news for the canny second-hand buyer who can pick up vehicles that might have cost £50,000 for £10,000 a few years down the line. But we’re not talking shed money here, so it needs to be reliable. This week we looked at the best bargain barges as scored by What Car? reliability tests. Which one would you have? Enjoy.
