fWotD Episode 2927: Tesla Model S Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 10 May 2025, is Tesla Model S.The Tesla Model S is a battery-electric, four-door full-size car produced by the American automaker Tesla since 2012. The automaker's second vehicle and longest-produced model, critics have called the Model S one of the most significant and influential electric cars in the industry. It is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award in 2013.Tesla started developing the Model S around 2007 under the codename WhiteStar. Initially, Henrik Fisker was appointed as the lead designer for the WhiteStar project; after a dispute with Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, Fisker was replaced by Franz von Holzhausen. By 2008, von Holzhausen had designed what would become the production Model S's exterior. Tesla unveiled a prototype of the vehicle in March 2009 in Hawthorne, California. In 2010, Tesla acquired a facility in Fremont, California, to produce the Model S, which was previously owned by General Motors and Toyota. Series manufacture of the car officially began at what is now known as the Tesla Fremont Factory in June 2012. Tesla carried out the final assembly for European markets at its facilities in Tilburg, the Netherlands, between 2013 and 2021. All versions of the Model S come equipped with a single-speed transmission. The car initially used an alternating current induction motor, which was replaced by a permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor in 2019. Constructed mostly of aluminum, the Model S shares 30 percent of its components with the Model X—a crossover SUV that was introduced in 2015. The Model S has undergone several updates during its production, the most prominent ones occurring in 2016 and 2021. These updates have usually included modifications to the motor, such as changes to power or torque, revised exterior elements, and refreshed interior features. One such change included the introduction of Tesla Autopilot—a partial vehicle automation advanced driver-assistance system—which was released in 2015. To charge the Model S, Tesla operates a network of fast-charging stations. In 2015, the Model S was the world's best-selling plug-in electric vehicle. In 2012, it was included on Time's list of the Best Inventions of the Year, and the magazine later included it on its list of the 10 Best Gadgets of the 2010s in 2019. In 2014, The Daily Telegraph described the Model S as a "car that changed the world". Road & Track argued that, with the introduction of the Model S Plaid—the high-performance version of the vehicle—and features such as the yoke steering wheel, Tesla managed to turn the Model S into "perhaps one of the worst [cars in the world]." Some companies have customized the Model S into limited-edition body styles, including a hearse and a shooting brake. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 10 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Tesla Model S on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kimberly.

It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. RIVIAN R1T 210KW PEAK DC CHARGING, LACK OF HEAT PUMP - US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) test documents have revealed a number of interesting tidbits about the 2022 Rivian R1T and R1S, including the vehicles' peak DC charging rate and their absence of a heat pump. - R1T and R1S have a peak DC charging rate of 210 KW, which is right in line with what the company quoted for its proprietary DC Adventure Network. Similar to Tesla Superchargers, the Adventure Network is designed specifically by Rivian for its vehicles, though the company has noted that the system could be opened to other EVs in the future. - Rivian has been quite subtle about the Adventure Network's full specs, though the company has noted that its fast chargers would offer over 200 kW output for the R1T and the R1S. This should allow the all-electric pickup truck and SUV to replenish up to 140 miles of range in 20 minutes. Rivian did state that further improvements down the line would likely improve the fast chargers to over 300 kW. - Rivian's EPA test documents also featured a specific section for the R1T and R1S' heat pump, though a look at the filings itself reveals that the vehicles are not equipped with the component. Considering that heat pumps are known to increase the efficiency of electric vehicles in the cold, it would be quite interesting to see how the R1T and the R1S' range could hold up in places with extremely cold temperatures. Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-max-charging-rate-no-heat-pump-confirmed/ RIVIAN NABS A COVETED MOTORTREND AWARD FOR ITS DEBUT EV PICKUP - MotorTrend awarded its prestigious 2022 "Truck of the Year" to an upstart: the electric Rivian R1T, setting a high bar for rival Tesla's upcoming Cybertruck. - Rivian beat out finalists that other electric vehicles, including General Motor's Hummer EV Pickup, to bag the prize with its very first model. The award goes beyond bragging rights. Rivian gains prestige and credibility at a key point when the upstart desperately needs to justify its $100 billion market cap. - Tesla took home the title of 2013 MotorTrend Car of the Year with its landmark Model S. Yet its most recent model, the highly popular Model Y crossover, didn't even make it to the short-list for 2021 SUV of the Year after being named a contender. Original Source : https://fortune.com/2021/12/13/rivian-r1t-motortrend-award-ev-pickup-tesla-cybertruck/ TESLA, MERCEDES TAKE OPPOSITE APPROACHES TO TOUCHSCREEN GAMEPLAY - Tesla runs counter to the traditional auto industry in a lot of ways, from the tweets of CEO Elon Musk to starting as an all-electric automaker in the early 2000s. The latest example of Tesla's different approach is the way it and Daimler have each responded to recent questions of safety and in-car entertainment. - Specifically, both Tesla and Mercedes have permitted people to play video games on the car's touchscreen while the vehicle is in motion, although Mercedes considers it a mistake and is recalling vehicles to remedy the problem, while Tesla has not yet done that. - Minimizing distracted driving has been at the forefront of the agenda for U.S. safety regulators for years now, even as cars get more connected and in-cabin screens multiply and continue to grow larger. - As for Mercedes, the German automaker issued a recall for four models—the 2021 S580 and the 2022 EQS450, EQS 580, and S500—when it discovered that some of those vehicles on the road had been programmed with an "incorrect configuration" on Mercedes-Benz's back-end server and potentially on the MBUX infotainment system in these vehicles. The error allows "vehicle occupants to activate those functions [including TV and digital owner's manual, as well as the games] while the vehicle is driving." - Tesla, on the other hand, has allowed video games to be played in some of its vehicles for years. That's fine when the car is parked, but this summer, an over-the-air software update allowed three video games to be played even while the car was in motion. Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a38495628/tesla-mercedes-touchscreen-video-games-moving-cars/ MERCEDES EQS RECALLED AFTER 56-INCH DISPLAY ALLOWED TV WHILE DRIVING - Impacted models include the 2021 S580 and 2022 models of both vehicles made before Nov. 16—specifically the S500, EQS450, and EQS580, for a total of 227 vehicles. - Mercedes investigated the issue after receiving a report of its occurrence in an "internal vehicle," presumably a company car or prototype. It subsequently determined "an incorrect configuration was available on Mercedes-Benz's backend server and might have been installed on vehicles in the field." - The carmaker has updated the server implicated in the issue and states in the NHTSA document that no dealer service will be needed for affected vehicles, though it still notified dealers this week. · Original Source : https://www.thedrive.com/tech/43464/mercedes-eqs-recalled-after-56-inch-display-allowed-tv-while-driving CHECK OUT THIS TESLA MODEL S WITH A LARGER CHARGING FLAP: FOR CCS? - a Tesla Model S test car was seen with a surprisingly big charging flap within the rear light segment, which appears to be similar to the one in the Tesla Model 3/Model Y cars. - As noted by Tesla_Adri (@tesla_adri), it might be a new, enlarged version of the charging flap that will be used to accommodate the CCS-compatible charging port in the refreshed Model S/Model X in Europe (and other markets). - r, as the company launched the Model 3/Model Y in Europe with the CCS Combo 2-compatible inlet, it was obvious that a similar fate will befall also the Model S/X once the refreshed version enters the market. The older Model S/Model X was forced to use an adapter to charge at CCS 2 fast chargers. - The refreshed Tesla Model S/Model X are expected to get a CCS Combo 2-compatible inlet in Europe and basically in most global markets (aside from North America, South Korea, China and some other countries). This bigger charging inlet for AC and DC charging requires more space: - In other words, it's an expected and positive move for Tesla, which will offer unified and industrywide compatible solutions for charging (AC 1- and 3-phase, as well as DC). The European Supercharging network is already retrofitted with two types of plugs - the Type 2 (used for DC charging) and CCS2. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/553824/tesla-models-charging-flap-ccs/ TESLA FULL SELF-DRIVING BETA CAUSES ACCIDENT WITH MODEL Y - Over the weekend, video of an incident in what was reported to be a Tesla Model Y was posted to Youtube. The video, which was later removed from YouTube shows the crossover, which was reportedly running Tesla's “Full Self Driving” level two driver assist system veers toward an oncoming car before the driver grabs the wheel to disengage “FSD” and leaves the road. The video was reposted on Twitter. - The video begins with the Model Y rounding a long, gentle curve on a two-lane road. As another vehicle approaches the Tesla in the opposing lane, the Model Y straightens its steering to send the electric crossover on a path for a head-on collision. The driver reacts quickly to retake control from the Full Self-Driving Beta and pull their Model Y back to the right. - The driver lost control of the Model Y, and the vehicle slid off the road. The crossover fell into and then launched out of a small ditch along the side of the road. The Tesla bounced over the terrain before coming to a stop near a home. To denote this new focus on performance, Volkswagen has introduced that new GTX badge, but while the connection to VW's GTI will bring with it a higher level of scrutiny, the ID.4's large SUV form suggests it's not exactly a B-road brawler. - The good news is that Volkswagen has given the GTX some decent mechanical changes to coincide with its sportier disposition, namely adding that second electric motor to the ID.4's MEB platform. This second motor is mounted on the front axle, which together with the existing rear-mounted motor creates a total of 295bhp and 339lb ft of torque, giving the GTX a reasonable 6.2sec 0-62mph time and a top speed of 112mph. - The battery pack is unchanged from that of other high-spec ID.4s with a 77kWh useable capacity (82kWh gross), giving a quoted WLTP range of 299 miles, or about 30 miles down on the most efficient single-motor variant with the same battery capacity. The 2021 LA Auto Show media days began Wednesday, Nov. 17, marking the first major automotive show of the season after a two-year COVID-19 pandemic. The Weekly Driver Podcast was in attendance for the first of our daily episodes. A few minutes after the show opened, co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia visited various halls at the Los Angeles Convention Center. We viewed the new models of legacy brands, Ford to Chevrolet, Honda to Chrysler. And we viewed a slew of current and pending (maybe) electric vehicles — high-end Porsche to moderately priced Hyundai, the Mullen Five (2024?) to the 2022 Lucid Air, the MotorTrend Car of the Year. The LA Auto Show featured many current and pending electric cars and also new Nissan Z. All Images © Bruce Aldrich/2021 As the first LA Auto Show since November 2019, differences in this year's show were readily apparent from the last edition. LA Auto Show: Electric Cars Galore The emphasis on electric vehicles from more manufacturers is an overriding theme. Matted color palates are also more prevalent. The Weekly Driver Podcast has hosts offer our opinions as we meander from manufacturer to manufacturer. We observed the new Mustang Mach E, the new, bigger and the more plush Lincoln Navigator and its competitor, the Jeep Wagoneer. As for electric vehicles, newbies include the Kia EV9, Fisker Ocean, Nissan Ariya, Subaru Solterra, Toyota bX4X and Vietnamese startup VinFast. A vintage racing Porsche was showcased at the LA Auto Show. Of course, where's the new, there's usually old. Among the vast array of new Porsches in the Germany manufacturer's segregated hall, a wondrous barn find — a vintage 1960 Porsche 356, 1,600 Super 90 resplendent in dents and patina. The redesigned 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV ( and new EUV) electric hatchback has enhanced features and a much cheaper asking price. Chevy estimates the 2022 Bolt EV can travel up to 259 miles on a full charge. The 2017 Bolt EV was named the MotorTrend "Car of The Year" for its combination of high mileage and game changing price. To further shake things up Chevy managed to cut $5,500 from the 2022 Bolt's starting price. Chevrolet will also cover the "standard installation of Level 2 charging capability" in the homes of eligible customers who purchase or lease a 2022 Bolt. This makes the Bolt EV & EUV undeniably the best value EV car in the market, easily undercutting the price of it's cheaper competitors (Nissan Leaf, Kia Niro, and Hyundai Kona) and setting a new range standard. Ford expects to deliver more than 600,000 European vehicles using the MEB architecture over six years, with a second all-new Ford model for European customers under discussion. This supports Ford’s European strategy, which involves continuing to play on its strengths – including commercial vehicles, compelling crossovers and imported iconic vehicles such as Mustang and Explorer. Volkswagen started developing its MEB architecture in 2016, investing approximately $7 billion in this platform. The car-maker is planning to use this platform to build approximately 15 million cars for the Volkswagen Group alone in the next decade. For Ford, using Volkswagen’s MEB architecture is part of its more than $11.5 billion investment in electric vehicles worldwide – and supports Ford’s commitment to offer its European customers a broad range of electric vehicles while meeting its sustainability commitments. "The selection and judging criteria have changed, the trophies have changed, and the vehicles most certainly have changed, but the spirit behind the Car of the Year is the same today as it was in 1949: Identify the most superlative new vehicle introduced each year." they say: "We are confident that, were we to summon all the judges and staff of the past 70 years, we would come to a rapid consensus: No vehicle we've awarded, be it Car of the Year, Import Car of the Year, SUV of the Year, or Truck of the Year, can equal the impact, performance, and engineering excellence that is our Ultimate Car of the Year winner, the 2013 Tesla Model S." "The mere fact the Tesla Model S exists at all is a testament to innovation and entrepreneurship, the very qualities that once made the American automobile industry the largest, richest, and most powerful in the world," we wrote. "That the 11 judges unanimously voted the first vehicle designed from the wheels up by a fledgling automaker the 2013 MotorTrend Car of the Year should be cause for celebration. America can still make things." And still, the better part of a decade later, there isn't an electric car that can travel as far as a Model S, nor is there a street-legal production car of any motivation that can beat a Ludicrous Model S to 60 mph, not even a Ferrari LaFerrari or Porsche 918. Meanwhile, Tesla remains among the front-runners of advanced driver assistance technology; Autopilot and Autosteer were both unveiled on the Model S." https://www.motortrend.com/news/2013-tesla-model-s-beats-chevy-toyota-cadillac-ultimate-car-of-the-year/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA TO PROVIDE HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE OWNERS WITH NATIONWIDE CHARGING Electrify America today announced an agreement with Harley-Davidson to provide owners of its first all-electric motorcycle, The Harley-Davidson LiveWire with the per minute equivalent of 500 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging over two years at Electrify America stations nationwide. BMW IX3 ELECTRIC SUV RUMORED TO BE REAR-WHEEL DRIVE IN U.S. "BMW hasn't been too secretive about the arrival of its newest artillery of electric vehicles. In fact, the Bavarian automaker has sent official spy photos of the iX3 – a concept that was introduced in 2018 but now confirmed for production next year – together with two other EVs i4 and iNext." reports Motor1.com: "BMWBlog got a bit more information about the all-new electric crossover. According to its source, the iX3 is based on the G08 platform, which underpins the long-wheelbase X3. Even better, the iX3 will allegedly have a rear-wheel-drive configuration in the United States. BMWBlog also got the supposed moniker of the iX3 – sDrive75, with "75" representing the 75 kWh capacity of its battery pack. Production of the iX3 will be in China and will be exported globally from there, including the U.S." https://www.motor1.com/news/359613/bmw-ix3-rear-wheel-drive-us/ SECOND-GENERATION NISSAN LEAF LANDS IN AUSTRALIA "The new Nissan LEAF (the 40 kWh version) finally makes its way to Australia, where it will be sold from August 1, 2019 at 89 dealers" says InsideEVs: "To streamline the EV sales, Nissan decided to offer only a single high-spec grade, available from $49,990 AUD ($34,950) plus on-road costs. Kentucky and Tennessee are among the candidates for the plant's site, the person said. A decision on the plant's site is expected to be made by the end of this month." https://auto.ndtv.com/news/lg-chem-considering-building-second-u-s-ev-battery-plant-2068950 ELECTRIC CARS ARE DIFFICULT TO LIVE WITH ACCORDING TO JAGUAR BOSS Rawdon Glover, UK managing director for Jaguar: “I’d like to see a faster roll-out of infrastructure in terms of scale, of course, especially in light of the government’s stated Road to Zero ambitions, but I also think there need to be steps to make what we have today more usable. I’m not finger-pointing: it’s clear that we have a role to play in that, as well as the Government and the incumbent suppliers. But we have to make it easier to live with electric cars, from ensuring geographical coverage to raising standards so that charge points always work to introducing a system where you can have one card – ideally your credit card – to pay wherever you are. Having so many providers, each with their own payment systems that you need to sign up to in their own unique way, presents an unnecessary hurdle. There needs to be leadership from the Government that we can all get behind.” https://insideevs.com/news/359330/jaguar-director-ev-still-not-easy/ Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Today on AutoInfluence, we take a look at MotorTrends’s 2019 Car of the Year, the Genesis G70.
Day 3 of the LA Auto Show was the last of the Media Days. The public show opened its 10-day run today (Nov. 30) and will continue through Dec. 9. A handful of vehicles attracted a vast amount of attention, and representatives of two of those companies are our guests on Episode #63 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. The Rivian Concept pick-up truck and SUV are potential competitors for Tesla and were featured at the LA Auto Show. Images © James Raia/2018 Bruce Aldrich produced the show remotely from interviews I had from the show. Our guests are Kevin Smith, a Senior Group Manager of Public Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility for Genesis, and Sethu Gopal, Senior Director of Connected Car and Digital Experience for Rivian. A third guest, a communications director for Polaris, did not make his scheduled interview. A huge sign on the front of Los Angeles Convention announced the 2019 Genesis G70 as the MotorTrend Car of the Year. The entry-level luxury sedan has received several honors and it's likely to receive several more. Smith and I discuss the reasons for the debut vehicle's success. He provides details of the two additional sedans in the Genesis lineup and plans for the now three-year-old brand's future vehicles. Rivian, the concept all-electric pick-up truck and sport utility vehicle, has often been touted as a pending competitor to Tesla. The company was founded nearly 10 years ago by Mainstream Motors in Florida. Its name was changed to Avera and now Rivian. It has two concepts at the LA Auto Show, the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. Gopal discusses the company's plans for the production of the vehicle. He also details some of the specs for the uniquely designed machines — a 400-plus mile range, 0-60 miles per hour times in 3.0 seconds and 11,000-pound towing capacities. The professional services business is all about relationships which are (surprisingly enough) two-way streets. And sometimes clients (whether they be internal or external) need to respectfully and politely be shown the business end of the door. Join me for another “Motor Trend Car of the Year” Award-winning episode of May the Best Brand Win where we’ll explore the client/service provider relationship and how to end it if needed. We’ll also hit who’s winning and losing and give you some tips on how to be a great client — so don’t miss it!
Dan is test-driving a Tesla, Landon is not very cheery because his Motor Trend Car of the Year is acting up and had to go in the shop, and a drone dropped heroine, tobacco, and other contraband at a prison in Ohio. My wife and I finally bought our third used car, after thinking about it for a couple of months, and just in time. My mother-in-law arrived tonight. So, we won't have to do the car shuffle. After thinking of something sporty or maybe small and super economical, we finally decided on something in the middle. Really practical. We bought a 2010 Ford Fusion SEL for $9,500.The owner had already bought a new Ford Edge and was ready, though not desperate, to sell. Here are the details from the ad that caught my attention. Can you tell why it did? 2010 Ford Fusion SEL:- Sangria Red- Beige leather interior- 2.5L V4 engine, has good power and gas mileage- 80,736 milesFeatures:- Microsoft SYNC voice-activated communications- power windows/locks/mirrors- keyless remote entry- cruise control- tilt/telescoping steering column- AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system- 60/40 split/folding rear seat- AdvanceTrac stability/traction control- anti-lock brakes- front/front-side/side-curtain airbags- SIRIUS satellite radio- redundant steering wheel controls and fog lamps- dual-zone auto climate control- full-power and heated front seats- leather wrapped steering wheelOptional Features:- Moon and Tune Package ($1525 MSRP) - power moon roof and a Sony audio system with surround sound, AM/FM stereo/multi(6)-CD player, Sirius satellite and MP3 capability, 12 speakers and 390 watts- Add-on pin-striping This is a one-owner, non-smoker, well cared for vehicle in very good condition inside and out as demonstrated by the accompanying pictures. No accidents, always garaged at home and office, serviced at all scheduled maintenance intervals with supporting records. Please refer to the free CARFAX report I provided an url to above as it backs up the quality of this vehicle. Recent maintenance includes new brake pads and resurfaced rotors in September 2014 and 2 new premium Michelin tires in October 2014. The vehicle is in perfect working order and is truly in drive away and enjoy condition. This particular vehicle has been very dependable, carries high safety ratings, and the 2010 Ford Fusion was the 2010 Motor Trend Car of the Year. It would make a great first car for someone. Car is being sold only because it is being replaced by a new SUV. Original MSRP was $25,595 (please reference included window sticker image), asking $10,000. I will not be accepting any trades or offering financing, full payment only at time of purchase. Did you enjoy the show? If you liked this episode, please consider going to iTunes and subscribing. Well, the Ford hit parade continues, and this week we have the hottest new star out of the Motor City, the Fusion, parked in the Autoline Garage. But, more importantly, to get the back story behind this four-door looker, we have invited John Jraiche, the vehicle's chief engineer. We'll be asking him what Ford has done differently to turn out a vehicle that is truly a world-class car. And, you can count on a discussion of some of the biggest news stories of the week as well: the U.S. is set to dominate worldwide oil production in the near future; Tesla's Model S wins Motor Trend Car of the Year; and Ford PR outflanks GM in electrification announcements. Joining John McElroy to talk about this and a whole lot more is the Autoextremist, Peter De Lorenzo, and Alisa Priddle from the Detroit Free Press.
