In Episode 34 of the podcast "Redefining Energy Tech" (part 2/2), host Michael Barnard engages with Professor Bent Flyvbjerg, author of "How Big Things Get Done," to delve into the intricacies and strategies of megaprojects, focusing particularly on the comparison between pumped hydro storage and battery systems. The conversation emphasizes the importance of modularity and repeatability in large-scale projects and highlights various risks associated with construction, including data deficiencies and stakeholder management.   Professor Flyvbjerg introduces the concept of the 'window of doom,' underscoring the necessity of swift project delivery to mitigate risk. The episode explores the advantages of modular construction as evidenced in projects like the Tesla Gigafactory and renewable energy sectors, contrasting these with the prolonged timelines typical of nuclear power plant constructions. The discussion provides actionable recommendations, urging listeners to review critical risk management heuristics and the variance chart from Flyvbjerg's book. These insights are aimed at enhancing project management practices in infrastructure development. Listeners are encouraged to understand base rates and project risks, utilize heuristics for successful project management, and consider the significance of the variance chart in Chapter 9 of Flyvbjerg's book. The episode concludes with a call to develop personal heuristics for managing megaprojects effectively.

Mark previously served as head of the Tesla Gigafactory, leading the project from concept phase to construction. He also led the operations planning team and built the business systems for Tesla's Fremont factory and led the manufacturing program for Tesla's collaboration with Toyota for the Rav4 EV.Released November 3, 2022 - SACRAMENTO, CA:Monarch Tractor and Farm Electrification Consortium Partners Awarded California Energy Commission Grant for “Vehicle-to-Building Technologies for Resilient Backup Power"Consortium, including Monarch Tractor, Gridtractor, Rhombus Energy Solutions, Current Ways, and Polaris Energy Services, will demonstrate On Farm Mobile Microgrids for intelligent bidirectional charging of electric tractors and support for critical electric loads during power outages  Monarch Tractor, maker of the industry's smartest, fully electric autonomous tractor, and its Farm Electrification Consortium partners have received a $3 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to accelerate electrification of agricultural equipment and demonstrate the ability of batteries in on-farm equipment to keep critical electrical loads running during power outages that are initiated with greater frequency due to wildfires. The consortium is comprised of Monarch Tractor, Gridtractor, Rhombus Energy Solutions, Current Ways, and Polaris Energy Services. "With grid shutdowns, hardworking farmers lose significant time, resources and money in a business where America's growers already struggle to see the profits of their hard labor," says Praveen Penmetsa, CEO and co-founder of Monarch Tractor. "Our tractor's ability to provide exportable power and act as a mobile generator will help keep the lights on for California's farms even when the grid is down." In addition to emergency scenarios, the consortium will develop and demonstrate technology to enable farmers to employ tractors to respond to conditions on the power grid by charging and discharging batteries to supply irrigation pumps and other on-farm loads in response to dynamic prices and demand response events. The consortium will develop hardware, software and communications technologies to link tractors and charging equipment to fleet operation centers and grid management systems. "Farm equipment electrification can not only provide dramatic savings for growers but enable them to take control of their energy," says David Meyers, CEO of Gridtractor. "For the grid, agriculture is one sector in California with the electrical infrastructure already in place to support rapid EV adoption. With the backing of the CEC, this project will support building, deploying and testing the technologies required to take advantage of that opportunity."  Monarch Tractor's award-winning MK-V tractor is transforming agriculturSponsored by Tractors and Troubadours:Your weekly connection to agriculture industry newsmakers, hot-button industry issues, educational topics, rural lifestyle features and the best in true country music. Carbon-heavy agriculture is responsible for 11% of greenhouse gases worldwide. That's where Mark Schwager and his team at Monarch Tractor roll in, with the world's first electric, autonomous smart tractor. Monarch sees its tractor as the future of sustainable agriculture, allowing growers to apply precision farming while cutting their diesel costs to virtually zero. Co-Founder and President of Monarch Tractor, Mark Schawager talks with host Donna Loughlin about the need for more automation and EV in agriculture in this week's episode. Schwager has an impressive engineering and factory line pedigree. He previously served as head of the Tesla Gigafactory, leading the project from concept to construction. Now he's applying his deep engineering and production background to the farm. Join us as we explore the future of cleaner and more efficient farming! Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life.  JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (03:27) - From performing arts to business and technology - “I think life is an evolution, and I think that was my passion at that time and by the time I started learning things like high school calculus and physics, I kind of started gravitating more towards it, even though I went to a special high school for performing arts.” (05:25) - Mark's calling to the EV sector - “While I was here on the West Coast, I was staying with a friend's parents and they handed me a newspaper clipping about a tiny little company trying to make electric cars called Tesla, and I was like, ‘Okay, that's for me.'” (09:42) - Building Tesla's Gigafactory - “So basically, Elon said let's ramp it up as fast as possible, and so all of the areas of the supply chain were basically able to accommodate a doubling of production, but not battery cells. And so that essentially was the inception of getting cell manufacturing under Tesla's control.”    (16:55) - Mark's light bulb moment - “Having worked around automated processes basically for my entire career in manufacturing, looking back even further than that, I mean, factories have been getting automated since the 80s, but none of that was really there in the farming space.”   (23:10) - Mark's philosophy at Monarch Tractor - “We don't see ourselves as an electric, autonomous tractor company. We see ourselves as folks who are automating farm operations. And from that standpoint, we're actually very focused on the quality of the operations and our ability to serve the farmers' needs much more than the vehicle.” (27:18) - The Foxconn and Monarch Tractor partnership - “We believe that we can drive our competitive advantage from working with Foxconn and industrializing our vehicles with them. We can't do it on our own, but the pooled resources across that factory give us the chance to do that.” (29:00) - The continued need to scale farming up - “There's going to be like 10 billion people by the middle of the century on the planet. How are we going to feed them? It's not just you, the rent is ridiculous for just about everybody as the area sees a 34% single-year jump in one bedroom rental rates. And it's also not just you sneezing as oak pollen saw a huge spike across Central Texas yesterday due to windy conditions - hackberry pollen came in very high on Wednesday as well. A continuing surge in accidental opioid overdose deaths across Texas is being attributed to the steadily increasing presence of fentanyl in street drugs. Local business leaders are rallying behind proposed federal legislation that would incentivize domestic microchip manufacturing, which would positively impact Austin's growing chip production base. Bob Bowlsby, commissioner of the Big 12 Conference, announces an early retirement brought on in part by the chaos that has resulted from the departure of UT and OU. And, today's your last day to register for two elections to be held in May, including a city ordinance that would ban arrests for marijuana possession and also ban no-knock warrants, and the settling of runoffs that resulted from the March primary election. Make sure you get it right - as many as 25,000 mail-in ballots in that primary a few weeks ago were rejected under new state voting restrictions, almost 13 percent of them.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Elon Musk donates $5.7 Billion, will work with Igor Kurganov [Crosspost], published by Nathan Young on February 16, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Bloomberg reports the following - without permission"Elon Musk, it seems, is finally becoming a philanthropist on the scale of his billionaire peers. The electric car and space mogul gifted $5.7 billion worth of Tesla Inc. stock to charity in the span of 10 days in November -- many times more than he's given away through his eponymous foundation in the two decades since it was founded. Where that donation is going is a mystery, but it's just one more signal that the world's richest person is taking philanthropy more seriously. The decision by Musk, 50, to donate more than 5 million shares in the electric-car maker was disclosed in a regulatory filing Monday night, and comes on the heels of some of his biggest-ever philanthropic commitments -- though nothing has come close to the scale of billions of dollars. It would also help reduce what he called the biggest tax bill in U.S. history. The Musk Foundation in the past couple of years has made eight-figure grants to the city and local school system near his South Texas spaceport, a $100 million ready-made competition to fight climate change and millions of dollars to a pair of Covid-19 researchers. Musk at the construction site for a new Tesla Gigafactory near Gruenheide, Germany in 2020. Almost all of those recipients have been primarily working with Igor Kurganov, a professional poker player-turned-philanthropist, who Musk has recently enlisted to keep in contact with grantees and consider their proposals. Effective Altruism Kurganov, who has won more than $18 million during his poker career, is active in the world of so-called effective altruism, a philanthropic and philosophical movement that tries to have the greatest impact by carefully spending money to solve problems. Kurganov is the co-founder of Raising for Effective Giving, an organization created by a group of poker players that recommends “highly cost-effective charities.” He's also an adviser to the Forethought Foundation, a project by the Centre for Effective Altruism. Calls and emails to Kurganov haven't been returned. Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, and Aaron Beckman, Tesla's senior manager of stock administration, didn't respond to requests for comment. If Musk's foundation is turning to effective altruism, it hasn't showed yet, said Alixandra Barasch, an associate professor of marketing at New York University who has done research on the movement. Musk doesn't regularly publicize his gifts and tax documents that provide such disclosures have a years-long delay. What Musk has shared recently includes $10 million to Brownsville, Texas, near where SpaceX is located, to revitalize its downtown. So far, that money has gone to a grants program for local property owners, lighting projects and murals. Scale Up Saving lives is the primary focus of effective altruism, and “murals don't do that much good in terms of the way it's measured and defined in the movement,” Barasch said. Other gifts from Musk, like the $20 million for Cameron County schools, the $100 million commitment for the XPrize Carbon Removal competition and $5 million for Khan Academy, similarly don't have the focus that effective altruism typically does, Barasch said. But scale is also a factor, she said, and if Musk's foundation is influenced by the philosophy, his giving could increase significantly. “Looking at those amounts I'm like, ‘Holy moly, there's millions of dollars, it's a lot of money,'” Barasch said. But “it's nothing compared to what he's worth.” Musk has a $227 billion personal fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The donation of $5.7 billion of Tesla stock could be a sign that...

This episode's guest is Nasjaq - a content creator and investor who wants to build an awesome future. Jack (aka nasjaq) studied chemical engineering in college and talked his way into a job working at the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada for his first gig post-university. He then started his own company before joining a Y Combinator backed startup where he ran operations and supply chain until recently. Within the last couple of years, Nasjaq became a prolific content creator on TikTok - posting regular videos about new trends in hard tech and startups. He's built a massive following over over 800,000 on TikTok, and has begun to invest in the types of companies he's featured in his hard-tech updates. In this episode, we discuss Nasjaq's favorite hard tech topics such as terraforming, bioelectricity, and space. We also dive into his content creation and investing strategies, as well as other deep Nasjaq thoughts - like why meme's become reality, how the internet is already a source of artificial general intelligence, and why it's vital to put in the reps to build a career in anything. If you like this episode, I highly recommend following Nasjaq on Twitter @jacknasjaq and TikTok @nasjaq, and consider supporting him on Substack. Welcome back to 5th episode of the Talent Intelligence Collective Podcast! Since we've gathered quite a few new listeners (Hey! Hi! Welcome!) let me start with a round of introductions. Co-hosting we have me (Alan Walker) from Udder, Toby Culshaw from Amazon, Alison Ettridge from Talent Intuition and Nick Brooks from Microsoft. And joining us for this episode we have the amazing by Lyndon Llanes of Verizon. As usual, Toby kicked us off with a refresh on the happenings of the world of Talent Intelligence. His first update revolved around a recent report by Deutsche Bank. Their research suggested working from home should be taxed to help support workers whose jobs are under threat. Obviously, the report was met with some very mixed reviews, in general leaning towards the negative. With Lyndon correctly pointing out that there are no set of rules that decide who gets to work from home and who doesn't. And how there are clear cost benefits regarding working from home, for both sides. While an employee doesn't have to pay to commute, the company also does not have to pay for the upkeep of office space. So perhaps the tax should be split? Not just imposed on the employee? A new mandate by the SEC, around human capital disclosure, sprouted the discussion – Are we going to see more investment from the company in Talent Intelligence? Due to business wanting to provide the SEC with numbers that are healthy and good? While Lyndon and Nick both agreed the change that was long overdue, clean and usable data is still a very long way off. But I think Alison really highlighted the positive of this change: ‘I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS. I THINK THIS MANDATE IS GOING TO EXPOSE A WHOLE BUNCH OF ORGANISATIONS THAT JUST DON'T HAVE THIS TYPE OF DATA, NEVER MIND IT NOT BEING ACCURATE. THAT MEANS THERE IS GOING TO BE A DRIVE TO COLLECT DATA, WHICH IS AMAZING. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THERE IS NOW A RECOGNITION THAT HUMAN CAPITAL IS THE REAL DRIVER OF VALUE WITHIN AN ORGANISATION. AND IT CAN NO LONGER BE IGNORED. WE ARE GOING TO SEE A MASSIVE RISE IN TALENT INTELLIGENCE.' Toby continued with his worldly updates pivoting our discussion to the new Tesla Gigafactory (what a fun word!) and the NewYorkTimes opinion piece – The Human Experience Will Not Be Quantified. ‘I'VE QUITE A STRONG OPINION ABOUT THIS. DATA ALONE OR KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE A DECISION. TAKE SMOKING FOR EXAMPLE. SIMPLY KNOWING THAT SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH ISN'T ALWAYS ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU STOP. YOU CANNOT SIMPLY LOOK AT DATA AND FIND YOUR ANSWER. THERE ARE ALWAYS OTHER THINGS INVOLVED.' – LYNDON I then opened the floor to our resident hard-hitting interviewer extraordinaires – Toby and Alison. Who were very much prepared with questions like: ‘How does Talent Intelligence and People Analytics blend?' and ‘Do you have any words of advice for companies who are just starting out in the world of Talent Intelligence'. As always we hope you enjoy the episode. Please do leave a review and a rating for the podcast (if you liked it). Your support really does mean the world to us and it is all we need to ensure this podcast continues to grow. Stay intelligent! ———- Don't forget to say hi to our wonderful sponsors → Stratigens from @Talent Intuition
