Elon Musk said the department will never seek victory if a company is justly sued, but will never give up if the case is unfair. - Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company is building a hardcore litigation department that will directly initiate and execute lawsuits. He said the team would report directly to him. The head of the company made two commitments about how the department would work: The department will never seek victory in a just case against the company, even if it will probably win. The department will never surrender/settle an unjust case against the company, even if it will probably lose. - Those wishing to apply should send their CV to justice@tesla.com. A CV should contain 3 to 5 bullet points describing evidence of exceptional ability. In addition, Musk asked to include links to cases that the candidates tried. He is looking for real fighters who are ready to fight in the battles for justice in the courtroom. - ‘There will be blood' Original Source : Tesla Is Building a 'hardcore' Litigation Department to Seek Justice, (tesmanian.com) Sysco Intends To Buy Up To 800 Freightliner eCascadia - According to the Letter of Intent (LOI), the fleet would be deployed gradually between 2022 and 2026, with the first eCascadia delivery expected to arrive at Sysco's Riverside, California site later this year. - In the case of Sysco, the vehicles will be combined with refrigerated trailers, but the press release does not clarify whether the trailer will be powered from the main battery to fully utilize the EV potential. - In the long-term, Sysco intends to electrify 35% of its fleet by 2030. For 10 years, the Liberal federal government has denied climate change science and slow-walked the transition to renewable energy. Yesterday's historic defeat for this coalition will change all that and likely lead to an EV surge.'' - They are not hanging about — Labor's Electric Car Discount will begin on 1 July 2022, the beginning of the new financial year, and only 5 weeks away! - ‘'Australians love their cars. Multiple car ownership is common (I used to own three — one for me, one for the wife, and one as a toy). Because of this, passenger cars make up almost 10 per cent of Australia's CO2 emissions. To move Australians from fossil fuel burning cars to electric vehicles powered by renewable energy, Labor proposes exempting EVs from the 5% import tax and the 47% fringe benefits tax (a similar move to the UK government, which led to a spectacular increase in uptake).'' Original Source : EV Surge Likely After Labor Wins In Australia - CleanTechnica EVs are avoiding about 3% of global oil demand - ‘Plug-in vehicles avoided roughly 1.5 million barrels of oil per day last year, according to new analysis from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. That's about one-fifth of Russia's pre-invasion oil exports, Bloomberg NEF said.' - ‘The oil use avoided by EVs has also doubled since 2015, to about 3% of global demand, according to the analysis.' - While electric cars tend to get most of the attention, the analysis found that other vehicle types accounted for the most oil avoidance. Electric two- and three-wheeled vehicles—which tend to be popular in Asia—accounted for 67% of the oil demand avoided in 2021, according to Bloomberg NEF. - Those vehicles had an outsized impact on oil demand. Next in rank were electric buses, which accounted for 16% of avoided oil demand, followed by passenger vehicles at 13%. The latter were the fastest-growing segment, Bloomberg NEF noted. The commission’s ruling in favor of LG had threatened SK with a ban on supplying batteries in the country and put its facility under construction in Georgia at risk. The plant, which is still under construction, will supply batteries for electric vehicles for Ford and Volkswagen, and with the settlement agreement, SK is now also free to seek business from other companies." "Their compromise will allow SK to complete the construction of the $2.6 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Georgia, which will supply electric vehicle batteries for Ford and Volkswagen. SK earlier said it could shut down the Georgia plant if the import ban is not overturned, which could hamper the Biden administration’s EV push and pledge for American jobs" reported Korea Bizwire: "LG, which supplies Tesla and a number of automakers, is the world’s No. 2 EV battery supplier with a share of 23.5 percent, and SK Innovation was in sixth place with a 6 percent share in the global EV market last year, according to SNE Research. The Seoul government welcomed their agreement and vowed to expand support to make the nation a battery power house." https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/11/business/dealbook/battery-dispute-electric-vehicles.html http://koreabizwire.com/lg-sk-reach-last-minute-settlement-in-itc-battery-dispute/186988 FREIGHTLINER OPENS ORDER BOOKS FOR ECASCADIA AND EM2 EV TRUCKS "Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has announced that its two very first all-electric trucks - the Freightliner eCascadia and Freightliner eM2 - are now available for order. The decision to start sales comes after a few years since the reveal of the proof of concept in 2018." according to InsideEVs: " During that time, the company has launched and gradually expanded its pilot fleet of 38 electric vehicles that collectively covered nearly 750,000 miles (1.2 million km) in customer hands in North America. The eCascadia and eM2 prototypes were tested in a variety of applications, including drayage, regional and local pickup and delivery, and food and beverage delivery. The Detroit ePowertrain offers three battery options: 210 kWh: charging in 1.5 to 4 hours 315 kWh: charging in 2 to 6 hours 475 kWh: charging in 2 to 6 hours" https://insideevs.com/news/500134/freightliner-opens-orders-ecascadia-em2/ FRANCE TO OFFER GRANTS FOR ELECTRIC BIKES "France will offer the owners of old internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles a grant of €2,500 ($AU4,000) if they hand over their vehicles for scrap and buy an electric bicycle, according to Reuters. Reporting on Monday, Reuters said that French lawmakers in the National Assembly approved over the weekend an amendment to the country’s ‘Fight against climate change’ bill currently passing through the French Parliament." says thedriven.io: "The bill, which aims to set a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 40% by 2030 based on 1990 levels, will unsurprisingly include a raft of minor legislative goals to reach the country’s ambitious greenhouse reduction target. Included amongst these legislative targets is a plan to offer a €2,500 grant to buy an electric bicycle, in exchange for the scrapping of an old ICE vehicle." https://thedriven.io/2021/04/12/france-to-offer-grants-for-electric-bikes-in-cash-for-car-clunkers-program/ NEWMOTION'S CHARGING NETWORK JOINS ELECTRIC JUICE NETWORK Octopus Energy and NewMotion, a leading European smart EV charging solutions provider, have agreed that customers of the Electric Juice Network (EJN) can now use the public charge points of NewMotion. NewMotion, a Shell group company, has thousands of charge points in the public charging network in Europe and the UK, including a growing amount of rapid charging at Shell Recharge. Drivers of electric vehicles will now be able to pay with their Octopus Energy account across the participating charging networks, with all costs appearing on a single bill. PANASONIC SEES BIGGER CELLS AS KEY TO AFFORDABLE EVS "In a rare interview, Panasonic's EV battery boss provided a glimpse of the company's response to the larger battery cells promoted by client Tesla. Speaking to Bloomberg, Yasuaki Takamoto said bigger cells are the key to affordable electric cars, but indicated he's not convinced by Tesla's proposed cell format." says Green Car reports: " Tesla presented its 4680-format cylindrical cell as its future during its Battery Day last year, but it hadn't then produced any significant volume of them. Musk presented it as potentially halving cell cost over time. The bigger cells would also be harder to produce, are prone to overheating, and are more susceptible to particle contamination, Takamoto said. That's a frequent cause of battery fires, which occur when small pieces of metal work their way into a cell and cause it to short circuit, he said." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1131878_panasonic-bigger-cells-affordable-evs-tesla-format-change TOP 5 MERCEDES EQS FEATURES: ELECTRIC LUXURY! SK INNOVATION LOSES CASE WITH LG CHEM, FACES BAN "The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on Wednesday sided with South Korea's chemicals and electric vehicle (EV) battery maker LG Chem Ltd, which accused its crosstown rival SK Innovation Co Ltd of misappropriating trade secrets related to EV battery technology." says Autoblog; "The ITC said it was issuing a limited 10-year exclusion order but would permit SK to import components for domestic production of lithium ion batteries, battery cells, battery modules, and battery packs for Ford Motor Co's EV F-150 program for four years, and for Volkswagen of America's MEB electric vehicle line for the North America region for two years. The ITC said the decision would allow the automakers to transition to new suppliers for these programs. Edmunds was unable to achieve the EPA range on any of the Tesla vehicles, while they beat the EPA range by some decent margins in other electric vehicles." 2020 MINI Cooper SE 110 miles 150 miles (+36.5%) 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S 203 miles 323 miles* (+59.3%) 2020 Kia Niro EV 239 miles 285 miles (+19.2%) 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD Ext Range 270 miles 304 miles (+12.6%) What is the EPA methodology? Asks Edmunds: " First, the vehicle is fully charged and parked overnight. The following day, the vehicle is driven on a dynamometer — it's like a treadmill for cars — over successive simulated city and highway routes until the battery is depleted. The total distance traveled is then multiplied by a correction factor that the EPA has determined will more accurately reflect what drivers can expect to achieve in the real world. The value of this correction factor, which is always less than 1 but greater than 0, is determined by the number of drive cycles a vehicle is tested on. In short, there's certainly a method to the EPA's madness, but the process is laboratory-based, and EV owners don't drive their cars in a lab" https://electrek.co/2021/02/10/tesla-range-estimates-put-into-question-independent-tests/ https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/electric-car-range-and-consumption-epa-vs-edmunds.html VOLKSWAGEN GROUP TEAMS UP WITH MICROSOFT Volkswagen Group’s Car.Software Organisation and Microsoft will build an Automated Driving Platform for the agile development of automated driving functions With the cloud-based platform, Car.Software Organisation will simplify its development processes on Microsoft Azure to bring automated driving solutions to the Group’s cars even faster With the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud, the automated driving functions can be tested, deployed and operated https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/02/volkswagen-group-teams-up-with-microsoft-to-accelerate-the-devel.html 2022 MERCEDES EQS SPIED WITH LESS CAMO TO REVEAL LIFTBACK LAYOUT. The eCascadia and eM2 will also be offered with three battery-pack sizes—210 kwh, 315 kwh, and 475 kwh—using prismatic lithium-ion battery cells. Daimler estimates a maximum range of 230 miles for the eM2 and 250 miles for the eCascadia tractor." TIME FOR EU TO SET NATIONAL TARGETS FOR EV CHARGERS We, the undersigned, call for the European Commission to urgently review the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure law and propose an ambitious regulation rather than a directive, and to set binding national targets for all vehicle segments. Changing this into a regulation would: - Help harmonize the common market for zero emission road transport across Europe, from re-charging and re-fuelling standards, to payment methods, to tariff transparency to maintenance and more; - Allow for swift implementation to align with the fast-growing ZEV market given that transposition into national law of a directive can take multiple years; - Grant the framework to cover the areas where most re-charging will happen in the immediate future (i.e. charging in public parking facilities like supermarket parking lots). https://www.transportenvironment.org/sites/te/files/publications/Joint%20letter%20T%26E%2C%20ACEA%2C%20BEUC.pdf TESLA MUST RECALL 12,300 MODEL X CARS OVER PARTS THAT COULD FALL OFF "Tesla must recall around 12,300 Model X cars worldwide over body molding problems, Germany's motor vehicle authority (KBA) said on its website. TESLA FREMONT FACTORY STARTS TO PRODUCE ‘REFRESHED’ MODEL 3 "Some spy shots taken at Tesla's Fremont factory in California show a Model 3 that looks refreshed, though we're well aware that CEO Elon Musk says Tesla never refreshes its cars. You can refer to them however you choose, but they're visible changes, nonetheless. The most obvious is the exterior chrome delete that looks much the same as that of the Tesla Model Y." says InsideEVs: "According to Teslarati, the China-made Model 3 is getting the chrome delete, a powered trunk, a new steering wheel, and an updated center console, among other things. Electrek reported that it has received official information that the latter updates, as well as those seen on the Model 3s at Fremont, are planned for U.S. cars" "Tesla has refreshed its Model 3 with some changes to the car's exterior, interior, and possibly elsewhere." says Tesmanian: "We have previously received reports from some North American owners that their Model 3s differ in frunk and headlights. Several updated Model 3s were also delivered to Europe, and made in China Model 3 was said to have received a number of changes. Now, Tesla enthusiast @WholeMarsBlog/Twitter has taken pictures of the refreshed Model 3 in Fremont. The production date of the car is October 8. In the shots, you can clearly see that the frame around the windows and door handles are no longer chrome. The sides of the center console are covered in vegan leather with stitching, instead of the plastic sidewalls that came before. Also spotted was a Model 3 with a steering wheel on the right side, which is likely an indicator of where it will be delivered. Tesla tracker Veda Prime claims that, according to the label, this car will be shipped to Australia or New Zealand. At the bottom of the label, we can see the mark, Japan, but Veda Prime claims that this is not proof that this Model 3 will be sent to Japan." That’s about 90 miles less on a charge than the competing Tesla Model 3." says TechCrunch: "Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath spoke at TechCrunch Sessions: Mobility shortly after the EPA released its range guidance. In short, he said Polestar knows drivers see real-world results that exceed the EPA’s range. Ingenlath concedes his company is not beating Tesla in range, but encourages side-by-side comparisons in the real world. What looks like a large difference on paper is much less in practice. And he says a longer-range version is on the way." https://techcrunch.com/2020/10/09/polestar-ceo-defends-the-polestar-2s-recall-and-233-mile-epa-rating/ NIO COMPLETES 1 MILLION BATTERY SWAPS On May 20th 2018 the first NIO Battery Swap station was installed in Shenzhen. It was back in May that I told you about NIO completing their 500,000th battery swap. And it has taken just 4 months to double that. "As of October 5, 2020, Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker NIO (NYSE: NIO) has provided more than one million free battery swaps to users, with a maximum of more than 500 battery swaps for a single vehicle, NIO said today. NIO said, based on the cost of 180 yuan per time, the service has a cumulative savings of more than 100 million yuan for users." reports CN Tech Post: "NIO has deployed 155 battery swap stations in China." https://cntechpost.com/2020/10/05/nio-says-it-has-delivered-battery-swap-service-to-users-more-than-1-million-times/ AMAZON SHOWS RIVIAN ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS "Amazon just showed off the first of its planned custom electric delivery vehicles, which could be delivering packages in the next year. It plans to have 10,000 on the road by 2022, and 100,000 by 2030." says Business Insider: "The vehicle has Alexa voice assistant integration for giving drivers hands-free information about traffic and route updates. Exterior cameras extend around the vehicle, giving the driver a 360-degree view of the area around them." https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-electric-delivery-van-photos-details-features-2020-10?r=US&IR=T#in-the-back-of-the-van-bright-tail-lights-on-both-the-sides-and-roof-clearly-show-other-drivers-when-the-vehicle-is-braking-enhancing-safety-7 OIL GIANT TOTAL BUYS LONDON’S LARGEST EV CHARGING NETWORK "French oil giant Total has bought the London’s largest EV charging network from another French giant, Bolloré Group. Source London, as the charge point network is called, includes more than 1,600 charge points. It was under the Blue Point London portion of Bolloré’s business, which is what Total acquired." writes Clean Technica: "Source London isn’t just the biggest EV charge point network in London — it accounts for more than half of the city’s charge points. Furthermore, it intends to increase the number of charge points in its network by 10× before the end of 2025. That would mean 16,000, which sounds like a lot until you look at Total’s broader plans. The energy company wants to be operating more than 150,000 electric vehicle charge points across Europe by 2025." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/10/09/oil-giant-total-buys-londons-largest-ev-charging-network/ CLASSIC MGB ROADSTER IS A MODERN EV "The battery-powered MGBs are not conversions of vintage cars. Instead, the British firm RBW EV Classic Cars uses freshly minted bodies produced by British Motor Heritage. Underneath is a bespoke chassis with the engine mounted at the rear and the batteries located up front under the hood." says Autoblog; "The lithium-ion battery pack is by Hyperdrive Innovation, and the car is offered with six, seven, or eight batteries. Range is stated as 160 miles with the standard setup and 200 with the larger battery pack. A 3kW charger means a full recharge takes eight hours. The company says it intends to build 30 of the emissions-free roadsters, priced at 90,000 pounds (around $116,000). Besides the MG roadster, RBW plans to offer an electrified MGB GT hardtop as well, along with classic Minis." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/09/electric-classic-mgb-roadster/ SYSCO TESTS DAIMLER ELECTRIC TRUCK "Sysco is testing an all-electric Daimler Freightliner eCascadia, the food-service company said on Wednesday. Sysco, which runs the second-largest private fleet in the nation, said it is seeking to reduce its carbon footprint." according to UtilityDive: "The electric Class 8 tractor is making local and regional trips out of a San Francisco terminal, and will continue test runs through January, Sysco said. The test runs help Daimler, too, as Sysco said it is sending data and feedback to the OEM to assist in improving the design. Sysco said it is participating in Daimler's Freightliner Electric Vehicle Council, "a group of customers working with Freightliner to identify and address all potential hurdles to large-scale deployment of commercial battery electric vehicles."" https://www.utilitydive.com/news/Sysco-test-Daimler-electric-truck-Freightliner-eCascadia/586662/ You can listen to all 903 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PRODUCER IAN GRIFFITHS, and EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS NATHAN GORE-BROWN and RALPH JENSON CANADA ANNOUNCES NEW $5,000 INCENTIVE FOR ELECTRIC CARS "As part of its new budget, the Canadian federal government has announced a new $5,000 incentive for electric cars that cost less than $45,000, however, it excludes Tesla vehicles." Says Fred at Electrek today: "Some Canadian provinces already have EV incentive programs but unlike the US, there has never been a federal program to reduce the cost of electric vehicles. With the launch of their latest budget, the Canadian government has now announced a new $5,000 incentive program that is not yet completed. The $45,000 cut off point covers vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt EV, and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, but all of Tesla’s vehicles are excluded since the base Model 3 starts at $47,000 CAD." The budget says: "“To encourage more Canadians to buy zero-emission vehicles, Budget 2019 proposes to provide $300 million over three years, starting in 2019–20, to Transport Canada to introduce a new federal purchase incentive of up to $5,000 for electric battery or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000. Program details to follow.”" https://electrek.co/2019/03/19/canada-incentive-electric-cars-tesla-excluded/ BMW INEXT PRODUCTION SUV SPIED PLAYING IN THE SNOW com are delighted to get a long video of the new electric BMW: "Our spies were once again in the right place at the right time and had the chance to film the production version of BMW’s iNext electric SUV testing under heavy winter conditions in Sweden. This 5:47-minute video gives us a pretty good look at the vehicle’s dynamics with plenty of accelerations and even some high-speed cornering maneuvers." "The iNext, which might end up being called the i5, will be the electric equivalent of today’s BMW X5 in terms of its dimensions. It will be the Bavarian brand’s most technologically advanced vehicle when it debuts in 2021. Before it, the company will launch the iX3 and i4, in 2019 and 2020 respectively. https://www.motor1.com/news/314022/bmw-inext-spied-video/ GERMANY IS BIGGEST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET IN EUROPE SO FAR IN 2019 "Sales reports for the first two months of 2019 shows that Germany is now the biggest market for all-electric cars in Europe, dethroning Norway." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEV: "It had to happen at some point anyway, as Norway is so much smaller than Germany in population. Norway – at best – can double its BEV sales, reaching 100% BEV market share, while Germany can increase 50-times from less than 2% share to 100%." According to data compiled by industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de) the top 5 countries in Europe ranked by electric car sales for 2019 so far are: Germany – ≈9,300 Norway – ≈7,900 France – ≈5,900 Netherlands – ≈4,600 UK – ≈2,100 https://insideevs.com/germany-biggest-ev-market-europe/ VOLKSWAGEN THREATENS TO LEAVE GERMANY’S CAR LOBBY VDA IN SPAT OVER E-CARS German carmaker Volkswagen has threatened to quit the country’s influential carmaker lobby group VDA as a dispute over the national car industry’s approach to managing the transition in the transport sector towards low-carbon technologies escalates, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag reports. According to the article, Volkswagen wants the lobby group to budge from its rigid insistence on “technological openness” in the transition and to fully focus instead on electric vehicles. According to cleanenergywire.org: "Volkswagen last week announced it would further accelerate its already ambitious rollout plans for electric mobility. The company that still grapples with the fallout of the dieselgate scandal over manipulated emissions values plans to produce more than 20 million e-cars in the next decade and become fully CO2-neutral by 2050. " https://www.cleanenergywire.org/news/volkswagen-threatens-leave-germanys-car-lobby-vda-spat-over-e-cars Penske Tests Fuso eCanter Electric Truck In California "Daimler delivered the first Fuso eCanter electric truck to Penske Truck Leasing for urban delivery in California." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs today: "In December, Penske received also the first out of ten Freightliner eM2s for testing and is waiting for the 10 Freightliner eCascadia heavy-duty trucks. All the vehicles are to be evaluated in real-world service by various companies to prepare for truck electrification." https://insideevs.com/penske-truck-fuso-ecanter-electric-truck/ CHINA'S EVERGRANDE SAYS IT WILL START MAKING ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN JUNE "Chinese property firm Evergrande Group will start producing its first electric vehicles in June as part of a goal to become the world's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) company within the next three to five years, according to its chairman." Says a Reuters report today: "Hui Ka Yan made the comments at a conference in the eastern city of Tianjin over the weekend, according to a statement published on the company's website on Tuesday. He also said that Evergrande plans to start selling its first electric vehicle model globally "soon," which will use electric car production technology from Swedish car makers Saab and Koenigsegg, and drive systems from Netherlands' e-Traction, according to the statement." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/19/china-evergrande-ev-production/ AUDI Q2 E-TRON ELECTRIC CAR CAUGHT TESTING IN THE SNOW "New spy shots provide the very first look at the Audi Q2 E-Tron, which is the fully electric version of the brand’s compact crossover. This one wears some snow as extra concealment, but the images still provide an excellent look at the upcoming EV." According to Chris Bruce for InsideEVs.com today: "Powertrain specs for the electric model are a complete mystery at this point. Speculation indicates the company is aiming for at least a 310-mile (500-kilometer) range on a charge. A recent report suggests that Audi might only sell the Q2 E-Tron in China, and the company might make a long-wheelbase L model exclusively for that market, too." https://insideevs.com/audi-q2-e-tron-electric-car-spy-photo/ LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND INFORMATION IS PREVENTING MOTORISTS FROM TAKING THE EV PLUNGE Conflicting and confusing information on the latest generation of battery electric vehicles has created a ‘knowledge gap’ for potential buyers, holding them back from choosing an EV as their next purchase, a new White Paper from the UK’s leading consumer champion and new car buying platform, What Car? has found. This is despite 2019 being set to become the year of the electric vehicle, with up to 20 new models scheduled to be launched. Meanwhile, whatcar.com traffic data suggests public interest in EVs is at record levels. In a study of over 9000 motorists, What Car? found 8.4% are already considering a fully electric car as their next vehicle. The What Car? What Fuel? comparison tool, with 80,000 users, also found EVs are already an optimal choice for one in 10 drivers. In comparison, the UK market share of fully electric vehicles was only 0.7% in 2018, meaning electric vehicle sales are achieving just 7% of their sales potential. It’s Friday 8th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ELECTRIC CAR SWITCH The plans I've talked about on previous podcasts, to switch World Rallycross Championship cars to being electric, has been approved by the governing body the FIA World Motor Sport Council. I first heard of plans for this last year, and then earlier this year invitations were sent out for companies who wish you tender for the supply of the battery and chassis. This is very significant news as it starts from 2020. World Rallycross is a fast-paced, high adrenaline sport for drivers and spectators alike, with the electric cars eligible for both manufacturer teams and privateers. Every constructor will have the same battery and chassis package, which will be open for privateer teams to homologate as well. We now know Williams will provide all the batteries, as they have done to Formula E up to now, with Formula E moving to McLaren for the 2018/19 season. IN fact some of those specs from Formula Ewill be used to derive the regulations which will govern the manufacturers and private teams on the powertrains they design. The stats: two motors, one on each axle, and total power of 500kW. https://www.autosport.com/wrx/news/136578/world-rx-2020-electric-car-move-approved KIA NIRO EV REVEALED TO PUBLIC KIA has revealed its all-new Niro EV at the 2018 Busan International Motor Show today in Korea. They are finally showing off to the public what you and I have talked about for a while since we saw the concept at CES plus official pics last month. As Hyundai have done with the Kona they've taken the combustion car and added some batteries. The charge point is in the front grille behind a flappy slidey cover, and the small LED headlights are something we're seeing more from EV designers. Of course no need for air intakes to keep an engine cool makes the front look way better. As we've mentioned the Kona, in the same way the Niro offers a 64kWh lithium-polymer battery for 279 miles of range. However even though they're sister companies, it's not the same battery as it would be fair to assume. In fact more than one EV blog I've read today said they're fitting the same packs - oopsie! Different suppliers and different chemistry. That's not EPA rated yet though so expect something around 240 miles, still better than base spec Model 3. The motor drives the front wheels with 150kW of power and a brisk, without being face-melting, 0-60mph time of 7.8 seconds. That's the same for both battery options. And charging speeds? Yes they're confirmed for 100kW. The smaller pack is 39.2kWh for 186 miles of range. And if you're like me, I always find myself thinking I need the long range, but when you look at the journeys we make, 186 miles is just fine in nearly all cases. Even if that range came down to real world 100 miles you know the price of a Kia will be super competitive. Inside we have some blue accents for snazziness, look out for a 7inch touchscreen with plenty of buttons, this is no Tesla minimalism. There's an included wireless phone charger, plus plenty of safety tech like Forward Collision Warning with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Intelligent Stop & Go, and Lane Following Assist. As for their version of Autopilot, it's Level 2, so you'll stay in lane on the freeway with accelerating, decelerating, braking and steering up to 80mph. Korean sales start soon with prices elsewhere announced later this year - that's as specific as they'll be. With 5,000 domestic orders in Korea I would expect them to either service all of them first, or a at split it 50:50 for Korea vs Rest Of The World. GM TO SELL HONDA ADVANCED ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES IN NORTH AMERICA Reuters just reported: "General Motors Co will supply advanced batteries to Japan’s Honda Motor Co, the companies said Thursday, a move that could significantly reduce the cost of future electric vehicles at both automakers after 2020. GM and Honda on Thursday said they would “collaborate” on the batteries, with GM supplying cells and modules, mainly for electric vehicles to be sold by both companies in North America. A source familiar with GM’s plans said its current battery cell supplier, Korea’s LG Chem, is expected to provide cells for the new battery, which is mainly a GM design. The new batteries are expected to begin production around 2021, the source said." This looks like the classic win-win. The next gen batteries will be higher energy density than those used in the Bolt and for instance. DRIVER IN FATAL TESLA AUTOPILOT CRASH DID NOT HAVE HANDS ON WHEEL This is such a horrible story to report on but I want to quickly update you. "The driver of a Tesla who fatally crashed in California in March did not have his hands on the steering wheel at the time of the accident, said a preliminary report from the National Traffic Safety Board on Thursday." according to CNBC. NEW NISSAN eNV200 CAMPERVAN Nissan's hidden gem is the eNV200, electric van and people carrier which has recently been updated with the 40kWh battery, and thermal management to handle those who use it as a van and rapid charge regularly for business. "Nissan has taken the covers off a new in-house campervan range at the 2018 Madrid Motor Show. The campers, which are currently exclusively for the Spanish market, with an all-electric e-NV200 version included in the line-up." say AutoExpress: "All the campervans offer an extendable roof, which the maker claims allows four people to sit and stand in comfort. They all also come with a double bed, however, the NV300 is the only van to offer sleeping for four, thanks to a second double bed which is made available once the roof is raised. Inside this larger NV300-based model, there’s a fridge, sink, hob and heater to make sure occupants don’t freeze during their fine dining experience." The campervan eNV200 will be popular for those wanting to cut their emissions whilst enjoying the classic campervan roadtrip experience. DAIMLER TRUCKS NORTH AMERICA UNVEILS TWO ELECTRIC MODELS Daimler press office have been in touch with news that: "Freightliner Trucks premiered two fully electrified commercial vehicles, a Freightliner eCascadia™ heavy-duty truck and a Freightliner eM2 106 medium-duty truck today, during the Daimler Trucks Capital Market and Technology Day here. Freightliner plans to deliver an Electric Innovation Fleet of 30 vehicles to customers later this year for further testing under real-world operating conditions." "The eCascadia has up to 730 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 550 Kwh usable capacity, a range of up to 250 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 200 miles) in about 90 minutes. The Class 8 tractor is designed for local and regional distribution and drayage. The eM2 has up to 480 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 325 Kwh of usable capacity, a range of up to 230 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 184 miles) in about 60 minutes. The eM2 is Freightliner's electrified solution for local distribution, pickup and delivery, food and beverage delivery, and last-mile logistics applications." What did Daimler Trucks chief Martin Daum say? “We are the undisputed global leader of the trucking industry and we intend to remain in that position with electric trucks and buses." Just a reminder on the Tesla Semi range - 500 miles. Which Elon said yesterday was already being improved on for the truck which goes on sale in 2020. PORSCHE MISSION E CROSS TURISMO As well as the Porsche Mission E, the recently unveiled Cross Turismo version is a more rugged version of the same car. Designed to fit your skis in, in you will. And some of the early test mules have been given to journalists in North America. BMWBlog praised the steering and handling, but also said: "It’s also really, really fast. They weren’t allowed to drive it past 50 mph but Porsche claims it has 600 hp from its dual electric motors and is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and 0-124 mph in 12 seconds. The latter performance figure is actually faster than the Tesla Model S P100D. The biggest trick up the Mission E’s sleeves, though, is the fact that it can charge faster than any other electric car before it. With the capability of 800-volt charging, the Porsche Mission E can 250 miles of range in 15 minutes." More of those chargers will be appearing very soon especially in Europe where several networks are at advanced stage of installing them. EV CHARGING MAP ALLOWS ROUND AUSTRALIA EV TRIPS "It’s now possible to drive around Australia in an electric car, thanks to a comprehensive EV charging station map. The Tesla Owners Club of Australia (TOCA) released its Round Australia Electric Highway map this month." according to EnergyMatters.com.au "However, the map is not complete. There are still gaps in fast-charging stations and places where three phase is not available. As a result, TOCA and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) are offering help to property owners. TOCA and AEVA will give a 32 amp 3 phase electrical outlet free to any site which will help build the Round Australia and Red Centre routes to distance intervals of 300 km max. The property owner must install it reasonably promptly at an accessible location, and agree to let electric vehicles charge there." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
