Shoot us a Text.Episode #1026: California dealers are taking legal action against Scout Motors over its direct-sales model. Elon Musk plans to scale back his government role amid Tesla's slumping sales. And new code reveals OpenAI may soon integrate Shopify directly into ChatGPT, turning the AI into a full retail assistant. The California New Car Dealers Association is going to court over Scout Motors' retail strategy, saying the VW-owned startup is sidestepping franchise laws and undercutting the state's dealer network.Dealers claim Scout violates California Vehicle Code Section 11713.3, which bars automakers from bypassing franchised dealers if the brand is affiliated with an existing franchise network.A 2024 amendment clarifies that new EV brands under a legacy OEM must sell through franchised dealers if they share ownership.CNCDA argues that VW can't legally claim Scout is “independent” when it's wholly owned by Volkswagen AG.The association says VW dealers are being unfairly excluded from selling Scout's high-demand electric SUVs and pickups, and the lawsuit seeks over $35M in fines, plus a full sales halt and deposit freeze in California.“Illegal competition will harm not only dealers but also the communities and car buyers that they serve,” said CNCDA President Brian Maas.Elon Musk says he'll scale back his government work next month and refocus on Tesla, where sales are dropping, margins are thinning, and investors are restless.Musk says the “slog” of setting up the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is mostly done, but still plans to spend 40% of his time on it.Tesla stock jumped 5.5% after Musk's remarks on an earnings call; shares are still down nearly 50% from their December peak.Tesla's Q1 revenue missed estimates at $19.34B, with auto revenue down 20% and net profit down 71%.Musk reiterated support for lower tariffs but acknowledged Tesla isn't immune to "macro demand for cars," noting that economic uncertainty leads consumers to "pause on doing a major capital purchase like a car."Tesla is on track for a mid-2025 launch of an affordable EV and a June debut of its Austin-based robotaxi fleet.OpenAI is setting the stage for ChatGPT to become a full-fledged shopping assistant, as new code hints at a direct integration with Shopify that could streamline the entire purchase journey—from query to checkout.Code found in ChatGPT's public web assets includes tags like “buy_now” and “shopify_checkout_url,” suggesting native shopping support. If confirmed, this would allow users to move from query to checkout in seconds—no affiliate links, just direct Shopify-powered transactions.OpenAI's move mirrors Microsoft's April launch of the Copilot Merchant Program, which embeds shopping directly into the AI experience.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Volkswagen AG's recent earnings report sheds light on the company's financial standing and strategic direction. CEO Arno Antlitz disclosed to investors on the call that the company will book a provision of €900 million in the second quarter, marking a significant financial decision amidst a challenging business landscape.During Volkswagen AG's earnings call, it was noted that the company has reported strong customer engagement and substantial order intake from Europe, even in the face of pandemic-related hindrances that have impacted the broader industry. The company revealed an order tally of 730,000 from Western Europe, indicating an encouraging potential for recovery and growth for Volkswagen.Interestingly, Volkswagen AG reported a significant increase in the acceptance of (BEVs) during the earnings call. The order intake for BEVs has doubled compared to the same period last year. This trend points towards growing demand for electric vehicles - a sign that Volkswagen's strategy to fast-track BEV models is receiving a positive market response.During this earnings call, Volkswagen AG also highlighted changes within Audi's residual value hedging model. The company reported an adjustment in the valuation model that has resulted in a transition phase effect of €0.3 billion. While this adjustment influenced Audi's EBIT margin, the margin aligns more closely with its targeted range of 8% to 10% when considered. When addressing the European BEV sales for the first quarter, Volkswagen AG acknowledged on their earnings call that the demand, despite doubling sales, did not meet the organization's expectations. The company underscored the need for collective efforts by OEMs, governments, and energy providers to foster broader BEV adoption. Volkswagen affirms its commitment to accelerating the rollout of BEVs, acknowledging the uncertainties about timing but emphasizing its steadfast belief in the electric future. On the earnings call, Volkswagen AG communicated a measuredly optimistic narrative, marked by strong order intake and a growth trajectory in BEV sales. However, it also acknowledged challenges, namely accelerating BEV adoption rates and managing shifts in residual value hedging procedures. Volkswagen's focus remains on seeking recovery and profitability across all vehicle segments, whether BEVs or combustion engine models. This reflects the company's realistic approach to the dynamic nature of the automotive industry. Based on the disclosures made during the earnings call, Volkswagen AG continues to navigate its course with adaptability and farsightedness. This is a public episode. Driven by a steadfast vision to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, Europe embarks on a transformative journey, deeply rooted in a commitment to sustainability. At the heart of this journey lies the European Commission's ambitious goal: the deployment of 30 million electric vehicles (EVs) across the continent by the end of this decade. This significant objective serves as a cornerstone in a comprehensive strategy employed by European authorities. It melds together various facets such as evolving production trends, dynamic market forces, technological advancements, and regulatory policies. This goal is more than just a target; it represents a holistic plan to revamp the automotive landscape, spur innovation, and guide Europe towards a future that is both sustainable and mindful of environmental considerations. This article takes a deep drive into the diverse world of Europe's electric vehicle industry. It explores how the evolution of production, market dynamics, the advent of cutting-edge technology, and an effective regulatory framework come together to potentially transform the very nature of mobility across the European continent. This convergence of factors is not just reshaping the industry; it's redefining the future of transportation in Europe. Let's get charging! Production Trends Amidst a sweeping wave of environmental consciousness, the European EV industry is witnessing a pivotal transformation. This shift is significantly driven by the move from traditional vehicle manufacturing to electric vehicle production, a change catalyzed by stringent environmental regulations like the Fuel Economy Directive. This directive, aiming for average CO2 emissions to reach 95 grams per kilometer by 2030, is incentivizing automakers to embrace the production of low-emission vehicles, thus steering the industry towards a future of sustainable mobility. In reaction to these regulatory mandates, key players in the automotive sector are adjusting their strategies to align with these new environmental goals. A notable example is Renault, which has committed to a substantial 20 billion investment in electric vehicles and software by the end of this decade. Such a significant investment underscores not just a compliance with regulatory standards, but a proactive shift towards sustainable practices, reflecting a broader industry trend towards environmental responsibility and innovation. Market Share Dynamics Parallel to the transformative production trends in the European EV industry, the dynamics of market share are equally critical in shaping the competitive landscape. Key players such as Tesla, Renault, Hyundai, and Volkswagen AG are at the forefront, each striving for dominance in a market that is rapidly adapting to new demands and technologies. The race for market share is fueled by factors like technological innovation, the diversification of product lines, and strategic partnerships, all contributing to the vibrant and competitive nature of the EV sector. Tesla continues to maintain its position as a major influencer in the EV market. Meanwhile, Renault is aggressively expanding its portfolio, planning to introduce 30 new electric models by 2025, signaling a deep commitment to electric mobility. Similarly, Hyundai and Volkswagen AG are strengthening their positions, emphasizing the development and expansion of their electric vehicle offerings. The landscape of strategic collaborations and investments further intensifies the competitive environment. Prominent companies like Daimler, Ford, and BYD Company Ltd. are actively engaging in partnerships and pouring resources into research and development. These alliances and investments are crucial in driving market growth, as they bring together diverse expertise and resources, leading to innovations and advancements in the EV domain. This dynamic interplay of production shifts, market share struggles, and strategic collaborations underscores a rapidly evolving and fiercely competitive ...

South Africa risks losing business investment over visa 'chaos'

In one of the world's most unequal nations an acute shortage of skilled workers is restraining already tepid growth, limiting job creation and pushing some foreign investors to think about moving their money elsewhere. This skills shortage has been identified by the South African presidency as the second biggest impediment to economic growth, after crippling power outages. Yet the government department that could resolve the problem, home affairs, has been accused of exacerbating it by failing to deal with a visa system that appears to be causing self-inflicted damage on the economy. Skilled worker shortages are most acute in areas such as engineering, science, information technology and management-level personnel, according to a government report that called for urgent reform to the visa system. One business organization, which includes car companies Volkswagen AG and BMW AG has warned that delays in the process - it can take 48 weeks to have a visa application accepted - threaten expansion plans, investment and jobs in South Africa where unemployment is running at 33%. Schools, universities and small enterprises also complain that the Department of Home Affairs appears unable to efficiently process work and residence permits and that it is hampering their operations. Some have been left short of staff, others have delayed or reconsidered investment plans with several African countries now considered as alternative sites for regional headquarters. "We are experiencing these kind of issues," said Klaus Eckstein, senior representative for Bayer AG, the German multinational pharmaceuticals group, in the region. It runs manufacturing plants and research and development facilities in South Africa. "We are looking to expand. This is not helping anyone. It's not helping South Africa. It's not helping the business," he added. South Africa's economy is already being held back by inadequate power supply, a dysfunctional rail and port network that's limiting exports and a dearth of foreign investment, partially caused by the inability of companies to source the skills they need to expand. Those factors are expected to limit growth this year to just 0.9%, according to the International Monetary Fund. Worker shortages have been a global problem since the coronavirus pandemic, but the issue has dogged South Africa for more than a decade. A team set up by Cyril Ramaphosa, South Africa's president, found that between 2014 and 2021 a total of just 25,298 work permit visas - an average of 3 162 per year - were approved in a nation of 60-million people. The shortages have been exacerbated by high levels of emigration by skilled South African workers. More than half of all visa applications between 2014 and 2021 were rejected, some due to errors made by applicants and officials in the home affairs department. Annual applications for critical skills visas have more than halved from almost 7 000 in 2017 to 3 077 in 2021. The number of applications for business and general work visas have also slumped. The Ramaphosa group recommended a raft of changes including a points system and a trusted employer program so that bigger companies would face less scrutiny. Its report estimated that for every skilled employee brought into the country more than one other job is created and even a 1% increase in imported skilled workers would boost gross domestic product by 1.2%. In October the Department of Home Affairs took a step toward implementing the recommendations by asking companies that want to secure work permits for senior executives and technicians to take part in a pilot of a trusted employer program, that would prioritize their applications. If implemented fully, the changes could streamline the process. But progress has been slowed by political infighting in the Ramaphosa government and a crumbling civil service. Family residence permits are often not approved at the same time as work permits, the department is understaffed and its computers downlo...

That is mostly down to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's largest foundry and go-to producer of chips for Apple Inc smartphones, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Taiwan's role in the world economy largely existed below the radar until it came to recent prominence as the auto industry suffered shortfalls in chips used for everything from parking sensors to reducing emissions. With carmakers including Germany's Volkswagen AG, Ford Motor Co of the US and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp forced to halt production and idle plants, Taiwan's importance has suddenly become too big to ignore. That is not to say Taiwan is the only player in the semiconductor supply chain. This Wednesday is all about disruption. Not the buzzword kind, but the real kind as we talk about ASOTU's next evolution. We also blow out the candles on Carvana's 10 year birthday cake, as well as give our grocery store magazine review of the soap opera that is the EV transition. Automotive Ventures partnership and what is next for the ASOTUverseCarvana celebrated its 10th birthday yesterday with an ironic stock price of $1 for every year the company has been in business at  $10.04Intense focus on customer experience starting in 2013 led to CVNA being one of the  youngest company ever to debut on the Fortune 500 First vending machine appeared in Nashville in 2015"Ten years ago, when we sold our first car online in Atlanta, Georgia, it was hard to imagine at that time just how far we would come in our first decade. Despite the newsmaking antics of CEO Elon Musk and the company's recent stock value reckoning, the value of Tesla still remains greater than Toyota Motor Co., Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Volkswagen AG, BMW AG, General Motors Co., Stellantis NV and Ford Motor Co. combined. The current court case focusing on Elon Musk's $56B pay package heard closing arguments yesterday in a Delaware court. Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick who is presiding over the case called the prosecution's argument “elegant” and a “kill shot” as they attempt to discredit the manner in which the board posed the pay plan to shareholders for a vote. The defense argues that the package was tied to overall performance and shareholders have received over a 10x increase in stock value since the voteMusk told the court that the pay package was a way to help fulfill ambitions for space travel saying "It's a way to get humanity to Mars," he testified in November. "So Tesla can assist in potentially achieving that."A WSJ article is featuring the broad disagreement on how quickly EV adoption will likely occur, “Most car executives agree that the transition to electric vehicles is inevitable. 歡迎留言告訴我們你對這一集的想法: https://open.firstory.me/user/cl81kivnk00dn01wffhwxdg2s/comments Topic: Surging shipping rates pose new headwind for the global economy Shocks to supply chains are engulfing a wider swath of the global economy as the pandemic rages on, threatening to stifle Asia's trade-led recovery just as soaring freight rates make it harder for businesses to weather another year like 2020. Shortages of consumer goods like paper towels and work-from-home gear early in the COVID-19 crisis have given way to parts shortfalls in one of the most globally integrated of industries: auto manufacturing. Compounding the industrial imbalances are transport woes plaguing consumer and healthcare sectors still dealing with a dearth of available shipping containers to move components and finished products out of China, Taiwan, South Korea and Asia's other export powers. Nerijus Poskus, vice president for global ocean at San Francisco-based freight forwarder Flexport Inc, reckons the world needs the equivalent of 500,000 more 20-foot containers — roughly enough to fill 25 of the largest ships in operation — to satisfy the current demand. In the meantime, standard container rates on transpacific routes are quadruple what they were a year ago. And that is before equipment surcharges and premiums for guaranteed loading are added. “Anyone paying the freight bills in 2020 though knows the true cost of shipping is much higher than even the recently increased rates,” Poskus said. “We expect that to only increase in 2021.” The unstoppable rise in container shipping costs is borne out by December figures recently announced by Taiwan's three major shipping companies — Evergreen Marine Corp, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp and Wan Hai Lines Ltd — which saw a record-breaking year-on-year surge of revenue at 58.8 percent, 35.19 percent and 75.71 percent respectively. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/01/18/2003750759 Next Article Topic: The world is dependent on Taiwan for semiconductors As China pushes the world to avoid official dealings with Taiwan, leaders across the globe are realizing just how dependent they have become on the island democracy. Taiwan is being courted for its capacity to make leading-edge computer chips. The US still holds dominant positions, notably in chip design and electronic software tools; ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands has a monopoly on the machines needed to fabricate the best chips; Japan is a key supplier of equipment, chemicals and wafers. However, as the emphasis shifts to ever smaller, more powerful chips that require less energy, TSMC is increasingly in a field of its own. It has also helped Taiwan form a comprehensive ecosystem around it: ASE Technology Holding is the world's top chip assembler, while MediaTek has become the largest smartphone chipset vendor. A big worry is that TSMC's chip factories could become collateral damage if China were to make good on threats to invade Taiwan if it moves toward independence. “Taiwan is the center of gravity of Chinese security policy,” said Mathieu Duchatel, director of the Asia program at the Institut Montaigne in Paris. Preserving the world's most advanced fabs “is in the interests of everyone.” Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/02/01/2003751534 Next Article Topic: Reinventing Workers for the Post-COVID Economy The nation's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic will hinge to some extent on how quickly show managers can become electricians, whether taxi drivers can become plumbers, and how many cooks can manage software for a bank. This is likely to prove especially problematic for millions of low-paid workers in service industries like retailing, hospitality, building maintenance and transportation, which may be permanently impaired or fundamentally transformed. What will janitors do if fewer people work in offices? What will waiters do if the urban restaurant ecosystem never recovers its density? Their prognosis is bleak. Marcela Escobari, an economist at the Brookings Institution, warns that even if the economy adds jobs as the coronavirus risk fades, “the rebound won't help the people that have been hurt the most.” Looking back over 16 years of data, Escobari finds that workers in the occupations most heavily hit since the spring will have a difficult time reinventing themselves. Taxi drivers, dancers and front-desk clerks have poor track records moving to jobs as, say, registered nurses, pipe layers or instrumentation technicians. COVID is abruptly taking out a swath of jobs that were thought to be comparatively resilient, in services that require personal contact with customers. And the jolt has landed squarely on workers with little or no education beyond high school, toiling in the low-wage service economy. “The damage to the economy and particularly to workers will probably be longer lasting than we think it is going to be,” said Peter Beard, senior vice president at the Greater Houston Partnership, an economic development group. What's more, he said, COVID will intensify underlying dynamics that were already transforming the workplace. Automation, for one, will most likely accelerate as employers seek to protect their businesses from future pandemics. The challenge is not insurmountable. Yet despite scattered success stories, moving millions of workers into new occupations remains an enormous challenge. “We need a New Deal for skills,” said Amit Sevak, president of Revature, a company that hires workers, trains them to use digital tools and helps place them in jobs. “President Roosevelt deployed the massive number of workers unemployed in the Great Depression on projects that created many of the dams and roads and bridges we have. We need something like that.” Powered by Firstory Hosting

Uta Brandes nahm Dozenturen und Gastprofessuren an Hochschulen in Deutschland (UdK), Hong Kong (Hong Kong Polytechnic University), VR China (Art and Design Academy Hangzhou), Taiwan (Shieh Chien University), Australien (Western Sydney University), USA (Parsons School of Design) und Ägypten (German University Cairo) wahr. Publiziert wurden u.a. Beiträge von John Cage, Valie Export, Lawrence Weiner, George Brecht, Ernst Jandl, Friederike Mayröcker, Haus Rucker Co, Cesar Pelli, Alessandro Mendini...

32 years ago, Mcdonalds opened a restaurant in Moscow. Many people interpretted it as a soft integration to the west. In 1990, 30,000 people lined up for the opening at Pushkin Square, for many, it was the first taste of western consumerism. Since then, the Russian people have fallen in love with the Big Mac and the chain has grown all over the country. But today, the American fast-food giant has pulled out of Russia entirely. McDonalds closed over 800 stores in the country and ended up selling their productive resources to the Russians. The new owner replaced the symbolic golden arches with a new brand, "Vkusno & tochka", which translates to "Tasty & That's it".But McDonalds isn't the only one. So many other companies are leaving Russia! From the Auto industry (Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen AG), to the Finance industry (Goldman Sachs, Visa, American Express, and Paypal), companies are either suspending operations or limiting their services in the country of 146 million people - check out this article to see who's made drastic measures. The sanctions of the west are definitely taking effect and the Russian economy is drastically changing… But are the changes what the west was aiming for?Last episode, we talked about what Sanctions are and Professor Seth Benzells work around studying their effects. In this episode, we're going to hear the professors thoughts about where policy makers might want to spend more time.Tune in to learn about which Moscow factory, that used to employ 10,000 people, is being sold to the Russian government for $1 rouble..Some Helpful Links:Simulating Russias and Other Large Economies' Challenging and Interconnected TransitionsWhat Companies have Pulled Back from RussiaWhat to KNow as U.S., Allies Put Sanctions on RussiaHow New Sanctions Could Cripple Russias EconomyProfessor Seth Benzells ResearchSupport the show

Companies in Shenzhen, a major Chinese business center, will be allowed to reopen while efforts to contain coronavirus outbreaks progress, the government said Thursday, following a citywide shutdown that rattled financial markets.Testing of everyone in the city of 17.5 million people is “progressing smoothly,” said a deputy mayor, Huang Qiang, at a news conference. He said 71 new cases were found in the 24 hours through midnight Wednesday.China's case numbers in its latest wave of outbreaks in areas throughout the country are relatively low. But authorities are enforcing a “zero tolerance” strategy that has temporarily shut down major cities to find isolate every infected person.“We will organize enterprises to return to work,” Huang said, according to a transcript released by the government. He gave no timetable but said businesses are required to step up strengthen anti-disease measures and monitor employees for the virus's telltale fever.Chinese leaders appear to be trying to fine-tune their disease-control system to maintain their goal of zero cases while reducing economic and social disruption from stringent controls.A meeting Thursday of leaders of the ruling Communist Party “stressed the need to maintain normal production” but said disease control work should be “carried out strictly,” state TV reported on its evening news.“We should accelerate the reform of the disease control system,” the party leaders were cited as saying at the meeting. The report gave no details of possible changes under consideration.Businesses in Shenzhen, a finance and technology hub, were ordered to close Monday, except those that supply food, fuel and other necessities. Bus and subway service shut down. Residents were told to stay home while authorities carried out three rounds of testing. That prompted alarm about the possible impact on smartphone manufacturing and other industries that are centered on Shenzhen, which abuts Hong Kong. Economists said a potential threat to trade loomed if anti-virus controls spread to Shenzhen's Yantian Port, one of the world's business.Elsewhere, the industrial center of Changchun in the northeast shut down and travel controls were imposed on its surrounding province of Jilin.Volkswagen AG said production at its factory in Changchun would remain idle Friday. The German automaker said a factory in Shanghai, where anti-disease controls also were tightened, would operate.Shenzhen is home to some of China's biggest companies including telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies Ltd., Ping An Insurance Co. of China, electric vehicle maker BYD Auto and Tencent Holding, operator of the popular WeChat message system. In Shenzhen, the "epidemic prevention and control situation is positive,” Huang said. However, Huang warned Shenzhen still was suffering “sporadic outbreaks.” He said 71 confirmed infections were found in the 24 hours through midnight Wednesday.“Epidemic prevention and control work cannot slacken at all,” Huang said.- by Joe McDonald, AP
