Join Francie and Ryan as they discuss Ryan's most recent 2000-mile EV roadtrip when CCS was actually preferred over Tesla Superchargers at points along his route from Colorado to California! Ryan talks about his route and how along the way the fact that only V2 Superchargers are available make CCS charging the preferred way to charge. They dive into how Ryan logs his Tesla Model 3 roadtrip data, the importance of charging speeds and locations of EV chargers, benefits of an LFP battery, hotel electric vehicle charging amenities, and how we think the charging experience might change with the switch over to NACS and more cars on the Tesla network.Sources used to support today's episode:https://www.tesla.com/superchargerhttps://about.teslafi.com/Our 2 Millions Teslas Recalled Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldCuZl8RVpkShoutout to our sponsors for more information find their links below:- Star Charge: https://www.starcharge.com/charging?id=20 - Kempower: https://kempower.com/america/charging-solutions/Find us on all of these places:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/outofspecpodcastApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/out-of-spec-podcast/id1576636119Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0tKIQfKL9oaHc1DLOTWvbdAmazon: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/473692b9-05b9-41f9-9b38-9f86fbdabee7/OUT-OF-SPEC-PODCASTFor further inquiries please email podcast@outofspecstudios.com#teslaroadtrip #model3 #supercharger Hosted on Acast. Autosteer is a form of precision agriculture most farmers use . . . but the toolbox is growing rapidly due to new technology. Don Campbell is a Field Smart Agronomist at Western Sales in Rosetown, Sask. He says precision agriculture aims to optimize each region of the field and create maximum return on investment. Campbell says precision agriculture technology is improving every year. It's a brown Christmas for many parts of the prairies. While there has been some snow and rain more moisture is needed across the prairies. Trevor Hadwen an Agroclimate Specialist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) says its certainly drier than we would like to be. Hadwen shares the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's drought monitoring map.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MKBHD DRIVES RIVIAN R1T “It's just hitting the streets and for the next 24 hours, I'm going to drive it. I'm going to live with it, spend some time with it, and then I'm going to try to answer all of the questions people have had about it that I possibly can. And there are a lot of questions, because this is a very hyped up vehicle, this is maybe the most promising of any of the EVs coming out of the start-ups. This I think is the most interesting of all of them right now, thanks in part by their background with Amazon and Ford. The basic specs are this: it's quad motors, one on each 21 inch all-terrain wheel, 314 miles of range, 0 to 60 in three seconds flat, which is hilariously quick for pickup truck. And then this is the launch edition with the adventure package, which includes a lot of the most premium interior finishes. It has the off-road upgrade and pretty much all the options. So it starts at just over $70,000 and it can quickly jump up into mid eighties or 90 plus from there. So definitely premium, but it's packing a lot of stuff that makes it feel worth the price.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1uYhkMRLWg ELON MUSK TWEETS THAT TESLA IS ROLLING BACK ‘FULL SELF-DRIVING' - Tesla is dialing back its Full Self-Driving software, CEO Elon Musk said Sunday, after discovering software bugs in the new batch of the software beta. The company had rolled out a new version of its driver-assistance software to an expanded group of users over the weekend, but Musk said that it proved problematic and that the company was working on fixes. - Users reported sporadic issues including hard braking events, forward collision warnings and other system misfires that had not been present in previous versions. Original Source : https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/10/24/tesla-full-self-driving-musk Elon Musk on Twitter: “Regression in some left turns at traffic lights found by internal QA in 10.3. Fix in work, probably releasing tomorrow. Seeing some issues with 10.3, so rolling back to 10.2 temporarily. Please note, this is to be expected with beta software. It is impossible to test all hardware configs in all conditions with internal QA, hence public beta.” Original Source : https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1451907229796417542 - While several posters said the 10.3 update introduces phantom forward collision warnings (FCW), other issues noted included a disappearing Autosteer option, traffic aware cruise control (TACC) problems, and occasional AutoPilot panic. It's unclear how common these problems are and which ones, if any, caused the rollback, but Musk responded to a tweet about the Autosteer and TACC issues saying the company is working on it. Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/24/22743628/elon-musk-tesla-fsd-beta-10-3-rollback-issues-phantom-fcw - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (TSLA.O) said Monday it was aware of reported changes to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta advanced driver assistance system and had contacted the automaker for more information. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-agency-asks-tesla-about-changes-driver-assistance-system-2021-10-25/ NTSB CHAIR CALLS ON ELON MUSK TO CHANGE DESIGN OF TESLA AUTOPILOT - National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy has called on Tesla to change the design of its advanced driver assistance system to ensure it cannot be misused by drivers, according to a letter sent to the company's CEO Elon Musk. - The letter, which TechCrunch has viewed, expressed concern that Tesla has yet to implement two safety recommendations that the NTSB issued more than four years ago. The urgency to address those safety recommendations has increased now that Tesla is rolling out more automated driving functions through its so-called “Full Self-Driving” software beta. - The NTSB can only make recommendations and does not have the authority to enforce existing laws or make policy. - Homendy also noted that it sent five other automakers that have vehicles with Level 2 driving automation systems a recommendation to apply ways to engage and alert the driver. Those five manufacturers responded to NTSB and described the action they planned to take or were taking to better monitor a driver's level of engagement, according to Homendy's letter to Musk. We guess that those are the first customer cars - Lucid Air Dream Edition - that within the coming days or weeks will be delivered. The company said a month ago that the first deliveries are expected in October so only several days are left to fulfil the promise. - The production of the Lucid Air started on September 28 in Casa Grande, Arizona, so it's now been almost a month of a careful ramp up of this all-new, luxury EV. - Lucid had over 13,000 reservations for the Air when it started production, but we assume that the beginning will be slow, as quality control and satisfaction must be prioritized. - The initial production run will be 520 Dream Edition units (Range or Performance versions) after which Lucid will move to more regular types and more and more affordable versions - Air Grand Touring, Air Touring and Air. Three variants are offered at prices starting at 159,888 yuan, the equivalent of about 21,500 euros. As reported, the compact electric car is produced locally by SAIC Volkswagen in Anting. - According to the Chinese electric car portal CnEVPost, sales of the ID.3 began on Friday. FORD MUSTANG MACH-E EASILY GOES 300+ MILES IN NORWAY "Ford is now testing its hot new Mustang Mach-e electric crossover/SUV in Europe. Naturally, the #1 place to take an electric vehicle is Norway, where approximately 70% of new vehicle sales are now electric (fully electric or plugin hybrid). That’s where Ford has been playing around with the Mustang Mach-E, and the results are looking good" says CleanTechnica: "ord shared that the “all-wheel drive model with a targeted WLTP driving range of 335 miles exceeded energy-efficiency expectations, travelling 301 miles non-stop from Oslo to Trondheim, finishing the journey with 14 per cent battery capacity remaining.” Not too shabby, and that’s not even the extended-range trim, which Ford expects to get a WLTP range rating of 379 miles." Ford press release says: “Latest testing shows charge time has improved by nearly 30 per cent from early estimates, reaching an average of 73 miles of range within 10 minutes using IONITY fast charging, when equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive.” The UK homepage at ford.co.uk still has the old time of 58 miles. And 370 miles (Model 3 LR is 348, for £3,000 less, 75kWh battery). 150kW peak charge rate. 99kWh gross. And if we're playing THIS game, the Model 3 can add 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/18/ford-mustang-mach-e-easily-goes-300-miles-in-norway/ PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO TURNED INTO SAFETY CAR "Porsche just introduced a new all-electric safety car in its Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland series, which this weekend had a 45-minute opening race on the Circuit de la Sarthe, as part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France." says InsideEVs: "Meet the Porsche Taycan Turbo version, retrofitted to handle the job, but at the same time remain street legal. In fact, while the racing cars were transported on trucks, the Porsche Taycan Turbo safety car drove on its own from Germany to Le Mans on public roads. With 500 kW of power, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds and more than 400 km (250 miles) of range, the Porsche Taycan Turbo is a pretty good choice for the purpose. It's not the first plug-in safety car, as several years ago BMW introduced the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 (and i8 Roadster) safety cars for the Formula E series, but it's one of the first that's all-electric." https://insideevs.com/news/444796/porsche-taycan-turbo-safety-car LUCID AIR MIGHT HAVE JUST BEAT TESLA’S PLAID MODEL S ROUND LAGUNA SECA "EV startup Lucid has only just announced its debut car, the Air, but is already setting its sights on lap records currently held by Tesla’s Model S tri-motor Plaid Edition. According to a trackside sleuth who goes by The Kilowatts on Twitter, Lucid was putting its tri-motor powertrain through its paces, and appeared to post a claimed 1 minute 33 seconds lap time at Laguna Seca racetrack in California. Scroll down for trackside footage of the Air in action." says The Next Web: "ccording to The Kilowatts, they recorded the Lucid Air’s time using their own stopwatch. Of course, this is an unofficial time, but on a racetrack where lap times are separated by fractions of a second, the Lucid seems to have a comfortable buffer over Tesla’s Model S Plaid Edition, which completed a hot lap of Laguna Seca in 1:36.55 last year. Lucid has been quite tight-lipped about its tri-motor setup, and the not-so-subtle leak of a Tesla trouncing lap time at its local racetrack is certainly a warning shot of sorts. Bear in mind, Tesla Battery day is next week, and one of the many things that could be announced is Tesla’s tri-motor Plaid Model S." https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/09/18/the-lucid-air-might-have-just-beat-teslas-plaid-model-s-round-laguna-seca/ FIRST TESLA MEGAPACK DEPLOYED IN UK TO HELP KEEP THE LIGHTS ON "In July Tesla Megapack and Tesla Autobidder AI entered the UK market. Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and Harmony Energy have joined forces to launch their first UK battery system. This week, for the first time in the UK, a project using giant Tesla Inc. batteries was used to help balance supply and demand in Britain’s electricity market." according to Tesmanian: "National Grid spent 718 million pounds ($932 million) balancing the network from March to July to cope with low demand and high supply of renewable generation—39% higher than usual, according to BNN Bloomberg. A new computer system used by National Grid has allowed burgeoning technologies like batteries to be used in the balancing market more easily. The 7.5-megawatt Holes Bay energy storage plant in Dorset in southwest England is operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures BV and Harmony Energy Ltd." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-megapack-giant-batteries-are-being-use-in-uk-for-the-1st-time-to-keep-lights-on TESLA REINTRODUCES ‘ENHANCED AUTOPILOT’ "Tesla has reintroduced the ‘Enhanced Autopilot’ option – offering a cheaper alternative to the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package for existing owners. Finally, the automaker ended up making the Autopilot’s Autosteer and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control standard on its vehicles and bundled the rest of the features into its ‘Full Self-Driving package’ (FSD)." according to Electrek: "The automaker started selling the FSD package for $5,000 and it has gradually increased the price to now $8,000 – following an update earlier this summer. It is leaving Tesla owners with limited and expensive choices. Now Tesla has reintroduced the option of an Enhanced Autopilot package for $4,000 – breaking down some of the features previously only available in the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package;. It’s the same Enhanced Autopilot package that Tesla used to offer and includes all the features that don’t require the automaker’s latest onboard self-driving computer." EA is: Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon. https://electrek.co/2020/09/19/tesla-reintroduce-enhanced-autopilot-alternative-full-self-driving/ CHINESE CARMAKERS LAG BEHIND IN NEV QUALITY: SURVEY "China is the world's largest market for new energy vehicles, but Chinese carmakers still lag behind international companies in terms of vehicle quality, according to a JD Power China study released Thursday." says China Daily: "The study also finds that international brands perform better in the exterior, infotainment system, seats, powertrain, and interior categories, while Chinese startup brands like Nio exceed in driving experience, battery and charging. new energy vehicle owners not only expect technological and smart in-vehicle features, but also require high quality. That means carmakers must deliver vehicles with both high quality and advanced technology. In August, sales of new energy vehicles reached 109,000, up 25.8 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers." http://www.chinadailyglobal.com/a/202009/17/WS5f6328eea31024ad0ba7a387.html MERCEDES EQS SPIED REMINDING US IT WILL TECHNICALLY BE A HATCHBACK "Now that the new S-Class is out and about, we’re gradually turning our attention to its electric equivalent in the vast Mercedes range. Unlike the EQ C based on the GLC, the EQS will distance itself from the S-Class by riding on a dedicated electric car platform. We can say the same thing about the styling as while the two crossovers have similar proportions and some common design traits, the EQS looks far more futuristic than the traditional Daimler flagship." reports Motor1.com: "A fresh batch of spy shots from the Nürburgring reminds us Mercedes is taking a more practical approach compared to the Taycan and E-Tron GT. While the Porsche and Audi EVs are sedans, the EQS will be a hatchback / liftback as denoted by the visible outline of the large tailgate in the adjacent images. The Tesla Model S has a similar setup, whereas the electric Jaguar XJ and BMW i7 will be sedans judging by the most recent spy photos." https://www.motor1.com/news/369809/mercedes-benz-vision-eqs-frankfurt/ HIGH-POWER CHARGING TRUCKS BECOME MOBILE POWER SOURCES From Track Experiences to the Ice Experience in Finland, the Taycan is now an integral part of Porsche’s customer driving programmes. However, not everywhere provides the adequate infrastructure for charging the electric sports car en masse. Meet Porsche’s innovative solution: a fleet of stand-alone, high-power charging trucks that offer mobile charging on demand. The Hungaroring in Budapest was the venue for a special Porsche Track Experience just a few days ago, where “Soul on Track” offered customers the opportunity to test the Taycan on a circuit. Such driving events present organisers with a particular challenge, however: when a large number of Taycan cars need to be charged quickly and simultaneously, the local infrastructure isn’t always up to the job. Without a satisfactory solution on the market, Porsche wasted no time in creating its own. With a power rating of 3.2 megawatts, ten Taycan can be charged simultaneously at maximum speed. The battery buffer storage unit has a capacity of 2.1 megawatt hours. This means that up to 30 Taycan in total can be charged by the energy storage unit. The latter is generally recharged with renewable power from the power grid. For example, during a three-week customer event in the Portuguese city of Portimao in November 2019, the power came directly from the nearby photovoltaic systems. The trailers can be recharged very quickly – under good conditions, they are fully charged again within four hours. https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020/company/porsche-high-power-charging-trucks-mobile-power-sources-22285.html You can listen to all 893 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Ford expects to deliver more than 600,000 European vehicles using the MEB architecture over six years, with a second all-new Ford model for European customers under discussion. This supports Ford’s European strategy, which involves continuing to play on its strengths – including commercial vehicles, compelling crossovers and imported iconic vehicles such as Mustang and Explorer. Volkswagen started developing its MEB architecture in 2016, investing approximately $7 billion in this platform. The car-maker is planning to use this platform to build approximately 15 million cars for the Volkswagen Group alone in the next decade. For Ford, using Volkswagen’s MEB architecture is part of its more than $11.5 billion investment in electric vehicles worldwide – and supports Ford’s commitment to offer its European customers a broad range of electric vehicles while meeting its sustainability commitments. TESLA’S (TSLA) Q2 2019 EARNINGS CALL WITH ELON MUSK SET FOR JULY 24 "Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has announced that it would be posting its financial results for Q2 2019 after the market closes on Wednesday, July 24, 2019." reports Simon for TEslarati: "The company would be issuing a brief advisory with a link to its Q2 2019 Update Letter, which will be accessible from Tesla’s Investor Relations website. A live Q&A session is set for 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time (5:30 p.m. Eastern Time) to discuss the electric car and energy company’s financial results and outlook." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-momentum-q1-earnings-call-date-rivals-hit-roadblocks/ TESLA SUPPLIER HINTS AT DOUBLING PARTS PRODUCTION FOR MODEL 3 "precision stamping service provider China FineBlanking Technology (CFTC) - one of Tesla's suppliers from China, will reportedly double its monthly shipments for components of relays used in the Tesla Model 3 from 20,000 to 40,000 as early as August 2019." says InsideEVs: "Assuming that Tesla is able to produce on average around 5,500 Model 3 per week (up to around 7,000 peak) in California and is gearing up for 3,000 per week in China (starting with low-volume in Q4), the Tesla Factory in California would need to increase production significantly maybe to around 7,000+ per week and 90,000+ per quarter (more at peaks)." https://insideevs.com/news/359426/tesla-supplier-doubling-parts-production-model-3/ TESLA MODEL S BEATS CHEVY, TOYOTA, AND CADILLAC FOR ULTIMATE CAR OF THE YEAR HONORS MotorTrend have crowned their ultimate car of the year. "The selection and judging criteria have changed, the trophies have changed, and the vehicles most certainly have changed, but the spirit behind the Car of the Year is the same today as it was in 1949: Identify the most superlative new vehicle introduced each year." they say: "We are confident that, were we to summon all the judges and staff of the past 70 years, we would come to a rapid consensus: No vehicle we've awarded, be it Car of the Year, Import Car of the Year, SUV of the Year, or Truck of the Year, can equal the impact, performance, and engineering excellence that is our Ultimate Car of the Year winner, the 2013 Tesla Model S." "The mere fact the Tesla Model S exists at all is a testament to innovation and entrepreneurship, the very qualities that once made the American automobile industry the largest, richest, and most powerful in the world," we wrote. "That the 11 judges unanimously voted the first vehicle designed from the wheels up by a fledgling automaker the 2013 MotorTrend Car of the Year should be cause for celebration. America can still make things." And still, the better part of a decade later, there isn't an electric car that can travel as far as a Model S, nor is there a street-legal production car of any motivation that can beat a Ludicrous Model S to 60 mph, not even a Ferrari LaFerrari or Porsche 918. Meanwhile, Tesla remains among the front-runners of advanced driver assistance technology; Autopilot and Autosteer were both unveiled on the Model S." https://www.motortrend.com/news/2013-tesla-model-s-beats-chevy-toyota-cadillac-ultimate-car-of-the-year/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA TO PROVIDE HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE OWNERS WITH NATIONWIDE CHARGING Electrify America today announced an agreement with Harley-Davidson to provide owners of its first all-electric motorcycle, The Harley-Davidson LiveWire with the per minute equivalent of 500 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging over two years at Electrify America stations nationwide. BMW IX3 ELECTRIC SUV RUMORED TO BE REAR-WHEEL DRIVE IN U.S. "BMW hasn't been too secretive about the arrival of its newest artillery of electric vehicles. In fact, the Bavarian automaker has sent official spy photos of the iX3 – a concept that was introduced in 2018 but now confirmed for production next year – together with two other EVs i4 and iNext." reports Motor1.com: "BMWBlog got a bit more information about the all-new electric crossover. According to its source, the iX3 is based on the G08 platform, which underpins the long-wheelbase X3. Even better, the iX3 will allegedly have a rear-wheel-drive configuration in the United States. BMWBlog also got the supposed moniker of the iX3 – sDrive75, with "75" representing the 75 kWh capacity of its battery pack. I’m not finger-pointing: it’s clear that we have a role to play in that, as well as the Government and the incumbent suppliers. But we have to make it easier to live with electric cars, from ensuring geographical coverage to raising standards so that charge points always work to introducing a system where you can have one card – ideally your credit card – to pay wherever you are. Having so many providers, each with their own payment systems that you need to sign up to in their own unique way, presents an unnecessary hurdle. There needs to be leadership from the Government that we can all get behind.” https://insideevs.com/news/359330/jaguar-director-ev-still-not-easy/ Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Correcting Audi: Tesla Model 3 Charges Over 2 Times Faster Than Audi e-tron "The article was written by Simon Barke and Myles Clark. They each hold a PhD in physics, work for an international space mission at the University of Florida, and understand scientific data quite well. Matthew Mostafaei, Audi’s manager for e-tron, presented data taken from Twitter during the New York Auto Show without naming the source. (That’s plagiarism.) The data was misrepresented by plotting it on a different axis. (That’s a falsification.) He then used the data to show the e-tron’s charging superiority over the Model 3, when it actually proves the opposite. (That’s deception.) You may call this good marketing. I call it a brazen lie. At best, it is a highly misleading accident." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/17/correcting-audi-tesla-model-3-charges-over-2-times-faster-than-audi-e-tron/ NISSAN CLAIMS ITS UPGRADED PROPILOT SYSTEM ENABLES HANDS-OFF HIGHWAY DRIVING "Nissan is introducing a new version of its ProPilot Assist driver-assist system in Japan that marks a big step forward in automation. The current version of ProPilot Assist is basically adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, but Nissan claims the new system — dubbed ProPilot 2.0 — allows for “hands-off” driving on highways." says DigitalTrends: "ProPilot 2.0 is designed to work only on highways, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot and Cadillac’s Super Cruise systems. It has the capability to follow a route set in the car’s navigation system from on-ramp to off-ramp. Once the car reaches the off-ramp, the driver must retake full control. On the highway, though, Nissan claims drivers can take their hands off the wheel while the car cruises in a single lane." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/nissan-propilot-20-driver-assist-system/ MG ZS EV TO BE EQUIPPED WITH 44.5 KWH BATTERY "MG (part of the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor) announced further details about the MG ZS EV, currently presented at the London Motor Show. The electric crossover will be equipped with 5 kWh liquid-cooled battery, which places it almost directly against the Hyundai Kona Electric with the 39.2 kWh standard battery. The WLTP range will be confirmed in Q3." according to InsideEVs. The press release says: "The ZS EV is powered by a 44.5kWh water-cooled battery with rapid-charging capability that will enable it to be recharged from 0-80% in 43 minutes, while domestic charging on a 7kW unit takes six-and-a-half hours from 0-100%. Certified range on current WLTP test regulations is expected to be confirmed in Q3." The cost-cutting measures are necessary despite the fact that Tesla just raised $2.7 billion earlier this month, Musk said in the email."reporst The Verge today: "Musk and Zach Kirkhorn, who recently replaced outgoing chief financial officer Deepak Ahuja, will review “all expenses of any kind anywhere in the word, including parts, salary, travel expenses, rent, literally every payment that leaves our bank account,” according to the email." https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/17/18629166/elon-musk-tesla-money-changes-cfo-employee-expenses TESLA IS UPDATING BATTERY SOFTWARE AFTER MODEL S CATCHES FIRE IN HONG KONG "A Tesla Model S caught fire in a Hong Kong parking lot on Sunday, less than a month after video of a Model S bursting into flames in Shanghai, China went viral. Now, “out of an abundance of caution,” Tesla says, the company is making software changes that could reduce the risk of batteries catching fire." reports Jalopnik: "Jalopnik spoke with a Tesla spokesperson about the incident, and the company said it is making some over-the-air changes to thermal and charge management battery software to make the Model S and X safer" Tesla said: "As we continue our investigation of the root cause, out of an abundance of caution, we are revising charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X vehicles via an over-the-air software update that will begin rolling out today, to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity.” With an update on the article after it was published: "This article has been amended to clarify that the Tesla Model S or X may not necessarily have to be driving for extreme battery temperatures to occur. The new thermal management software aims to manage those temperatures under all conditions." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-is-updating-battery-software-after-a-model-s-catc-1834794877 TESLA NERFS AUTOPILOT IN EUROPE DUE TO NEW REGULATIONS "Tesla is starting to push a new software update that is pulling back some Autopilot features in most European markets due to new regulations. Tesla’s Autopilot on Model X and Model S was already approved under the previous set of regulations, but they now have to walk back some functionalities in order to comply. The changes are starting to get push to Model S and Model X vehicles in a new 2019.16.1 software update." says Fred at Electrek. Tesla wrote" “Due to new local regulations, the limit of how far the steering wheel can turn while Autosteer is active has been adjusted. This may reduce Autosteer’s ability to complete sharp turns. Additionally, to initiate Auto Lane Change, the turn signal must be engaged to the first detent (held partially up or down) and the lane change must start within 5 seconds of engaging the turn signal.” https://electrek.co/2019/05/17/tesla-nerfs-autopilot-europe-regulations/ PEUGEOT POSITIONS E-208 AS TOUGH RIVAL TO FUEL-POWERED SIBLINGS "Peugeot hopes to draw buyers to the brand's first mass-market full-electric vehicle -- the e-208 -- with a long-term battery warranty and lease rates that are comparable to internal combustion versions. The favorable terms are part of Peugeot's ambitions to have the e-208 account for 15 percent of its new small hatchback's global volume." according to Automotive News Europe: "Sales prices for the 208 will be announced this spring, but Peugeot is already promoting a 48-month, 60,000-km, 299 euro-a-month lease for the e-208, with a down payment of 2,400 euros. The company says the terms compare favorably to gasoline versions (269 euros a month) and diesel versions (289 euros a month) of the 208 when the cost of fuel is taken into consideration." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/peugeot-positions-e-208-tough-rival-fuel-powered-siblings COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Jeff and Garrett Sims are the owners of Sims Farms, a family-owned and operated ag business in the Centralia, Missouri area. The farm was established in 1967, and they’re the 5th generation of farmers who manage and oversee its day-to-day operations. Some of the services they offer include stewardship, soybeans production, and commercial corn production. Jeff and Garrett join me today to describe how Granular has enabled them to manage their business at a more efficient rate. They share how they run the farm, the people they employ, and the crops they grow. They discuss how they adapted to new technologies and how Granular has served as one of their best investments. They also explain the importance of knowing which “shiny object” to focus on and how to tell if a new tool is worth your time. “It's great to sell a product, but you have to have people and systems in place to make it work.” - Jeff Sims This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast: Jeff and Garrett Sims' farming operations and how they manage their farm. Their transition from traditional to automated farm management. How Granular helped them establish an efficient farm system. Sorting through the many new tools and technologies available to them. What matters most when considering using new technology. The number of people they employ and their responsibilities around the farm. Tasks they spend more time on now than they did when they were starting out. What they need to put more emphasis on to continue growing. What they're excited about in the future of agriculture. Key Takeaways: Some of the technologies out there today give us a good indication of what's coming. All technologies need to be looked at and applied to your business in some way or form. Adapting to new technology isn't as expensive as it was decades ago. As farms become bigger and more complex, you need to hire outside help. Friday 16th March 2018. RECORD BREAKING BATTERIES Firstly apologies for missing this is as part of the Volkswagen Press Conference this week. It’s a small detail but I think it’s perhaps the most significant of all the announcements. And that’s quite a statement given the headline number was 20 billion Euros in contracts – not promises or press releases for commitments to clean up – signed contracts for battery supply in China and Europe, with an announcement for North America to come. I think the most startling figure wasn’t 20 billion, but 100. Just 100 euros was the key number and I missed it. But it was in the Q&A section, so that’s my defence! The CEO confirmed it has written battery contracts for under 100 Euro per kWh. Let’s add some caveats to that. WE don’t know any more about the deal, or whether there were a range of contracts, which is almost certain, and that was the lowest price or even the average price across all of them. We do know, unlike with Tesla’s Gigafactory and Panasonic, VW don’t want to be in the business of making batteries, so that 100 euros per kWh could be the price per battery delivered, which would be very impressive if true, considering hundreds of millions required for capital investment had they followed Tesla in making the batteries. That works out to $120 - $125, which is competitive against GM saying they were in the region of $145. Given VW need most of their batteries from 2022 onwards, given the rapid price fall of batteries, if these contracts are 100 euros four years away that is more reasonable. We just don’t know yet. Elon Musk has talked about $100 being an inflection point when electric cars, whose battery is by far the most expensive part, become the same as combustion engine cars. Given VW suppliers will be making a profit on those prices, I think that’s good news for Tesla. Although they do have the sunk costs of infrastructure and staff at Gigafactory 1, 2, 3 and onwards, the sheer scale of half a million Model 3’s per year mean that magical $100 shouldn’t be too far off. It seems like not so long ago we were talking about the price dropping $1000 per kWh. http://seekingalpha.com/article/4156050-lower-cost-tesla-volkswagens-new-battery-cell-costs-100-euro-per-kwh AUDI E-TRON PRICE AND GT VERSION Staying with VW and their Audi brand will be out of the blocks with the e-tron soon. The prototypes ferrying car journalists around at the Geneva Motor Show last week were looking quite advanced. And now we know two things, when you can have one and how much they’ll cost. The e-tron will be available by the end of the year, and the price will start at 80,000 euros. It’s already on sale in some parts of Europe if you want to place a deposit. Some extra detail I’m not surprised about is a GT, or Gran Turismo, version coming soon. Just as the Jaguar I-PACE sees value in the electric racing series supporting Formula E, which will have a halo effect on the cars and the brand, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jaguar Land Rovers performance teams allowed to add some bells and whistles it for a road going version. Remember as well the Tesla-based Electric GT championship now has FIA approval and looks to be on track to race late this year or next year. https://www.electrive.com/2018/03/15/audi-e-tron-price-gt-version-announced/ CHAdeMO UPDATE A quick check of the CHAdeMO website sees the total number of installed chargers heading towards 18,000 which up 30% year on year. Which countries and manufacturers will adopt and promote which technology is one of the most interesting parts of the future EV economy. As of the end of last year, 775,000 CHAdeMO compatible cars are on the roads, out of which 330,000 found a home in Europe, which saw a 50% increase in CHAdeMO chargers. That’s impressive as Europe is heading towards nearly all rapid chargers being CCS. CHAdeMO are keen to highlight their bidirectional capability as Vehicle 2 Grid becomes of interest to both buyers and utilities, who see a large stock of EVs as the perfect way to smooth out the peaks of the grid when electricity generation gets the most expensive. CHAdeMO also have confirmed specs for 200kW speeds and soon 400kW specs will be announced. That should future-proof even the most aggressive of fast chargers. Once again, it’s always worth saying, nearly all charging is carried out at home or work. https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/03/chademo-2017-another-good-year-of-great-growth/ HYUNDAI WANTS MORE COLD WEATHER MILES Hyundai have been talking to Electrek about the cold weather performance of the Kona. It comes with a heat pump which is an expensive option on many EV. Electrek says the smart air intake recycles heated air by controlling the amount of air entering and exiting the vehicle. By better controlling the air flow inside the vehicle, the HVAC system is able to heat the cabin more efficiently, thereby minimizing the amount of heating used during winter driving. There’s a driver-only button you can push which shuts off any heating to the passenger side of the vehicle, again savings energy when it’s very cold. Maybe those options above aren’t so critical with the 64kWh battery but with the smaller, more affordable 39.2 kWh pack it will add valuable miles to the range. https://electrek.co/2018/03/14/hyundai-kona-electric-cold-weather-performance/ PANASONIC ADD ANOTHER LOCATION Panasonic has confirmed they have started production of new prismatic batteries in China. Panasonic will manufacture the high-capacity and high-safety prismatic-type batteries at this factory and ship them to the North American and Chinese markets. This gives them facilities to serve the USA, Japan and China. https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/03/panasonic-starts-ev-battery-production-in-china TESLA UPDATE Finally Tesla has started an Over The Air update of the latest new software to and owners testing it are reporting improvements to the Autopilot system. We knew it was coming, Elon said it was coming, and we never doubted it! Electrek say: “Autopilot 2.0/2.5 drivers who reached out to Electrek are seeing a significant improvement in lane detection, a reduction of “ping-ponging” within a lane, and a generally better experience when Autosteer is activated. Some are also reporting a more efficient Traffic-Aware Cruise Control to slow down and stop when locked into a lead vehicle.” Where do you stand on the Autopilot 1 vs Autopilot 2 debate? In another report the general responsiveness and speed of the touchscreen has also been noticeably improved. https://electrek.co/2018/03/15/tesla-autopilot-update-autosteer/ Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
