He graduated summa cum laude with a BA in religious studies and classical civilizations from the University of Vermont and earned his master's from Yale University, where he studied religion and culture. He is the author of Metamodernism: Or, The Cultural Logic of Cultural Logics and host of the Metamodern Spirituality Podcast. His primary interests include theorizing developments in culture after postmodernism, productively bridging the divide between science and spirituality, and developing sustainable systems for life to flourish. All of these lead through the paradigms of emergence and complexity, which inform all of his work.
In this episode, the cognitive neuroscientist and author of The Romance of Reality (see here for Gregg's review), Bobby Azarian joins the program to discuss his “unifying theory of reality” and vision for bridging science and religion. Bobby explains how he interprets the universe through a universal learning algorithm and shares what this means for how we make sense of ourselves and derive meaning from the world. The two review Bobby's book, draw connections between his views and UTOK and examine what is next in sharing his vision with the world. ℹ️ - - - Find out more about Bobby Azarian - - - ℹ️ Book: The Romance of Reality: https://www.theromanceofreality.com/ X: https://x.com/bobbyazarian ℹ️ - - - Find out more about Gregg Henriques - - - ℹ️ Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/contributors/gregg-henriques-phd Medium: https://gregghenriques.medium.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/henriqgx
On this episode of Thinking Ahead, we're discussing one of my favorite subjects, evolution. Bobby Azarian is a cognitive neuroscientist, a science journalist, and a true evolutionary. His book The Romance of Reality explores the evolution of the universe and life, purpose, complexity, and consciousness with rich vision that far transcends the all-to-common reductionistic view. I'm always interested in visions of evolution that open up new pathways for people to appreciate the magnificent journey of the cosmos, and Azarian's work is a wonderful example of exactly that type of an approach to science. In this lively conversation, Azarian and I explore how life and consciousness evolved on this beautiful blue planet, and what the future might have in store for us all.
March's book is the Romance of Reality by Bobby Azarian and it's essential reading as far as I'm concerned. It's essentially an attempt at a scientific theory of everything - the big kahuna in cosmology… and also LIFE. It's a theory called adaptive complexity science and it integrates physics, biology, neuroscience, computer science, evolutionary theory and statistics. Azarian, a cognitive neuroscientist, argues through rigorous scientific and mechanistic explanation that our biosphere and the entire universe are undergoing an adaptive transformation towards increased intelligence and complexity. This is Part One - it's free for all subscribers & listeners. For paid subscribers on Substack, there's a deep dive Part Two episode where I cover how to apply this mind-blowing information to your life and business, I talk niches and your uniqueness, future freedom and money, AI and collective unconscious, and how to actively cosmically awaken. In this special, quasi-Author Series video, Layman meets with Patrick Gac to discuss an innovative, natural-cycle based divinatory system that Patrick argues is compatible with and informed by some of the leading theory in our liminal worldspace, from John Vervaeke's 4-E cogsci to Bobby Azarian's cosmology. Agromancy, meaning "divination of the fields", is a card deck based system that generates mandalas. In this episode of the Smarter Not Harder Podcast, our guest Dr. Bobby Azarian joins our host Dr. Ted Achacoso to give one-cent solutions to life's $64,000 questions that include: How does the neuroscience of belief and cognitive biases, such as confirmation bias and the Dunning-Kruger effect, impact our resistance to changing beliefs and our approach to epistemic foraging? In what ways can understanding the concept of hierarchical emergence in the universe, and viewing everything from ant colonies to nations as a single organism, contribute to our understanding of consciousness, self-modeling, and mental resilience? How can the exploration of theories such as the Bayesian brain hypothesis, neuroDarwinism, terror management theory, and Cleodynamics enhance our understanding of the human mind, the universe, and the potential for predicting chaotic events? Dr. Robert Azarian (Bobby Azarian) is a science journalist and a cognitive neuroscientist who received his PhD from George Mason University. Cognitive neuroscientist and science writer, Bobby Azarian, returns to the Integral Stage for a deep and wide-ranging discussion of the emerging scientific paradigm -- the complexity science paradigm arising out of the intersections of physics, biology, neuroscience, and information theory -- that will likely shape self, culture, and society for the next century. If the universe is now known to be self-organizing through levels of developmental emergence, and if we are, as Carl Sagan once said, "a way for the cosmos to know itself," what really are the implications of such a view for all the domains of life that matter to us? This perspective, of course, is in its general outlines very similar to the one Ken Wilber outlined in Sex, Ecology, Spirituality, but the science has developed since Wilber published SES; so Bobby and Layman explore those developments, and how they further reinforce, and in some cases update, the synthesis Wilber offered several decades ago. Bobby Azarian is a cognitive neuroscientist (PhD, George Mason University), a science journalist, and author of the book The Romance of Reality: How the Universe Organizes Itself to Create Life, Consciousness, and Cosmic Complexity. He has written for The Atlantic, The New York Times, BBC Future, Scientific American, Slate, The Huffington Post, Quartz, The Daily Beast, Aeon, and others. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals like Human Brain Mapping, Cognition & Emotion, Acta Psychologica, and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. His Psychology Today blog (Mind in the Machine) has received over 8 million views, making it one of the most popular blogs on the website. This week our guest is cognitive neuroscientist and author, Bobby Azarian, who recently released his book “The Romance of Reality– How the Universe Organizes Itself to Create Life, Consciousness, and Cosmic Complexity.” In this episode, we do our best to get the full picture of this process, from how physics shapes life, how that life has an evolutionary tendency towards increased information processing, and how the resulting computational universe presents us with existential problems that require human cooperation to solve. Amongst other things, this includes a conversation about the possibility of a global brain connected by technology, the possibility of machine consciousness, and what technologies and cultural behaviors might bring us towards a future worth living, with a final emphasis on Bobby's enthusiasm for blockchain. In this conversation based on his new book, The Romance of Reality, cognitive neuroscientist Bobby Azarian explains how for centuries the question Why do we exist? was the sole province of religion and philosophy. According to the prevailing scientific paradigm, the universe tends toward randomness; it functions according to laws without purpose, and the emergence of life is an accident devoid of meaning. But Azarian argues that out of complexity science and the phenomenon known as emergence, a new cosmic narrative is taking shape: Nature's simplest “parts” come together to form ever-greater “wholes” in a process that has no end in sight, and that life is moving toward increasing complexity and awareness. Carl Sagan was right when he said of humanity that “we are a way for the cosmos to know itself.” Shermer and Azarian discuss: laws of thermodynamics and directionality • how complexity formed after the Big Bang • laws of nature: discovered or created or both? • Stephen Jay Gould and contingency vs. necessitating laws of nature • convergent evolution and directionality in evolution • the left wall of simplicity • leading theories for the origin of life • complexity theory and emergence • consciousness, the self, and other minds • free will, determinism, compatibilism, panpsychism • Is there purpose in the cosmos? Bobby Azarian joins Brendan to discuss his new book The Romance of Reality: How the Universe Organizes Itself to Create Life, Consciousness, and Cosmic Complexity. In the first half of their conversation, Bobby presents the new cosmic narrative offered by the complexity sciences. Unlike the older, reductionist account, this is a story in which life is inevitable and part of a broader cosmic design towards greater and greater knowledge creation. Beginning with the laws of thermodynamics, Bobby recounts the emergence of order out of (and by means of) chaos; the emergence of life out of ordered structures; and the emergence of consciousness out of life. In the second part of the conversation, the two speculate on the broader significance and meaning of this new cosmic narrative. Have we only seen the beginning of the Universe's waking up? Why does the Universe appear fine-tuned for its own coming to consciousness? How do these ideas relate to religion and purpose? 0:00 Introduction PART I: The Narrative 5:40 Entropy, Energy, and Order out of Chaos 11:47 Order for Entropy, or Entropy for Order? 18:15 The Inevitability of Life 23:00 Reductionism or Creationism?
