Rhinos are at extreme risk of extinction because of poaching and habitat loss. The work of conservationists has made sure that their numbers have continued to rise, but poaching is still a major threat to their existence. Most of the global rhino population lives in South Africa, where the government has taken big steps to prevent the killings, but recent data shows criminal poachers are still targeting the animalSo scientists are getting experimental with how to protect them!We hear from the BBC Africa's Ayanda Charlie who has speaking to scientists in South Africa coming up with ways to prevent poaching, including using radioactive material in horns as a deterrent. Plus, we get the story behind why there's videos of rhinos hanging upside down from helicopters. Riley Farrell from BBC Future tells us about how choppers are being used in rhino conservation. Did you know the visible part of the clitoris is less than one-third of its actual size? In this second part of our series with Rachel Gross, Rachel and Tammy banter about this understudied organ, including that (gasp) all sexual organs differentiate from the same embryonic root. Rachel describes how the interconnectedness between the clitoris and its friends--the vagina, vulva, and the entire pelvic floor--leads to pleasure. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to sexual health, Rachel calls attention to the whole-person approach of gender affirming care doctors to the clitoris as part of a person's overall experience of their bodies. She makes connections across issues that can arise with menopause, vulvodynia, and the pelvic floor, and the need for more medical education including training on vulva checks. Meet Rachel E. Gross, science journalist and author of Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage. In this first part of a two–part conversation, Rachel shares how her personal experience with bacterial vaginosis inspired her to write a book that investigates what we know about different parts of female anatomy and how that knowledge (and lack thereof) has been developed. Vagina Obscura is Tammy's favorite read of the year! Rachel highlights the often-overlooked clitoris and vagina, exploring how these body parts are still unfamiliar or awkward for many, including healthcare professionals. We also delve into the systemic marginalization of female and LGBTQ+ voices in science, and how this has influenced society's understanding of the female sexual and reproductive system. Our discussion covers topics like vaginal pH balance and why it varies across different racial groups, and the use of boric acid—a common rat poison—as a treatment for bacterial vaginosis. Rachel also shares the story behind her book's title, Vagina Obscura. Part two of the episode with Rachel is all about the clitoris. Stay tuned! So we've known since the 1970s, that the number of social connections that people have and the quality of those connections can predict longevity and general health across the lifespan. So people who not only have more connections, but also feel really supported and understood by the people around them, do tend to live longer. And that's just been replicated hundreds of times. So the evidence base is really unquestionable, in my opinion. And we know that it at least equals the other lifestyle factors that we take for granted now, things like obesity, or remaining at a healthy weight, how much exercise you do, whether you smoke, whether you drink, whether you take medication for your hypertension - all of those things we accept as being important for our health and longevity. But when you look at the effect sizes, they've been measured in these huge studies, you find that people's social connection is just as important. I found that really surprising just how important it was."   On Meaning  "It was very clear to me that social connections are important, as C .S. Lewis said, for providing meaning in life.  C.S. Lewis claimed that they didn't have any survival value though, that friendship wasn't important for survival. And what this research really showed is that actually, it does give us meaning in our life, but it's also incredibly important just to live a long and healthy life. So, I wanted to try to do my part in raising this awareness and let people know, not just how important that is, but then how they can overcome those psychological barriers to achieve that connection that we all deep down really crave." On Cognitive Biases and Social Connection "So that's one bias.

Does our society have an addiction to short term thinking and planning? Is our failure to mitigate climate change a result of this? Vincent Ialenti spent three years doing fieldwork in Finland, interviewing experts working on Posiva's Safety Case for the world's first long term nuclear repository, Onkalo. His book about that fieldwork, Deep Time Reckoning: How Future Thinking Can Help Earth Now, explores the idea of "shallow" and "deep" time thinking. Dr. Ialenti uses Onkalo as a case study for how policy can involve ongoing work over decades, and look ahead towards potential impacts hundreds of thousands of years into the future - if expertise is as trusted and depoliticised as it is in Finland. Bertie spoke to Vincent about the book, and how policymakers and the climate sector can think beyond the next generation or electoral cycle. Rerun: MSG, the umami seasoning frequently added to Chinese cuisine, came under fire on 4th April, 1968 - when Dr Robert Ho Man Kwok wrote a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine musing about the possible causes of a ‘syndrome' he experienced whenever he ate at Chinese restaurants in the US.   “The most prominent symptoms are numbness at the back of the neck, gradually radiating to both arms in the back, general weakness and palpitation”, he wrote, in a letter that soon attracted multiple responses from other clinicians - and spawned an unscientific panic about monosodium glutamate which still persists to this day. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly investigate which foods contain naturally-occurring MSG; ask why 1960s America was especially susceptible to scepticism about chemical additives; and consider the racist undertones to the definitions of the ‘syndrome' in the modern-day dictionary…  Further Reading: • Is MSG as bad as it's made out to be? I really enjoyed chatting with self-confessed ‘movement/mind geek', journalist, author and editor Caroline Williams.  We discuss the connection between movement and the mind, highlighting the physical and mental benefits of exercise. Caroline explains how movement affects brain function and the importance of incorporating movement into daily life, the impact of sedentarism on the brain and the role of movement in preventing cognitive decline and mental diseases.  We talked about the relationship between movement and confidence, as well as the positive effects of movements that emphasise bonding and synchronicity.  Caroline provides some fascinating examples from her research for her highly successful book, ‘Move! The new science of body over mind'. Caroline's ability to make the science easily digestible to the non-scientist and her sense of fun, make her work hugely enjoyable and accessible.  About this week's guest: Caroline Williams is a science journalist, editor and author based in the UK. She is a consultant and regular contributor to New Scientist magazine, covering neuroscience, health and nature-based stories. Her work has also appeared in the Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, BBC Future, BBC Earth and the Boston Globe, among others. She is the author of two books: Move! and Override, and is the editor of two of New Scientist's Instant Expert Guides: How Your Brain Works: Inside the most complicated object in the known universe and Your Conscious Mind: Unravelling the greatest mystery of the human brain. She also edited New Scientist's Essential Guide to the Brain.  Caroline has spent the past few years researching how body movements can dramatically change the way we think and feel, visiting scientists in their labs all over the world and meeting expert movers, from yoga gurus to stuntmen and from dancers to ultra-marathon runners. She gets her own movement fix from yoga, paddle-boarding, mountain biking and walking her New Zealand sheepdog cross, Jango. Connect here: Website: carolinefwilliams.net  Instagram: https://instagram.com/carolinewilliams_science X https://x.com/sciencecaroline More about your host, Wendy: Wendy (49) founded Reclaim Movement after a running injury at 40 turned into 4 years of chronic pain. In her search for answers and to reclaim her own movement again she discovered natural movement. The philosophy of training real life practical movements to be able to keep using them as we age, coupled with the benefit of using strengthening and mobilising whole-body movement patterns that are underused in today's modern world made her realise she had found a way to move for life. Wendy's aim is to help people embrace a movement-rich life, at any age, to improve mobility, strength and confidence to keep moving well and doing the things they love for as long as they want.  MovNat Level 1 certified & Functional Range Conditioning certified, she coaches online group classes live & by replay in the Reclaim Movement membership as well as online and in-person private coaching in Oxford.  Find out more how Reclaim Movement: Website: https://www.reclaimmovement.co.uk  Instagram: https://instagram.com/reclaim.movement YouTube: https://youtube.com/@reclaim.movement Facebook: https://facebook.com/reclaim.movement FREE E-BOOK - 'Making the Ground your Friend for Life!'  NEWSLETTER: Sign up for the monthly(ish) newsletter, 'Just.Move' RECLAIM MOVEMENT MONTHLY OR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP - FREE 7-DAY TRIAL : LIVE (& by replay) natural movement classes, all replays, mini movement videos, tutorials, community support, movement prompts, and regular motivation.

VYS0029 | If There's Something Strange In Your Neighbourhood - Vayse to Face to Face with Field Lines Cartographer and Bob Freeman: Halloween 2023 - Show Notes Four middle-aged men bravely join forces to confront ancient evils, spooks, spectres and ghosts - ok, so, Vayse did Ghostbusters last Halloween but instead, this year, Hine and Buckley welcome back master of the liminal soundscape, Field Lines Cartographer and the Occult Detective himself, Bob Freeman to sit around the virtual camp fire as they each tell a ghost story from their home towns. FLC tells a tale of Warwickshire plague pits and feelings of stalking dread in the dark, Hine recounts a gruesome murder in Preston which led to bloody revenge from beyond the grave, Bob spins a classic American yarn of haunted houses in the deep, dark woods of rural Indiana and Buckley tells of the spirit of a young boy who haunts the picturesque town of Great Corby bringing those who encounter him great fortune followed by certain death. The conversation also turns to whether ghosts are actually, really all that scary, the differences between ghost stories in the UK and the US, the nature of reality itself (of course, this is Vayse)... and digitally transported flies... (Recorded 10 October 2023) Thanks again to Keith for the show notes and thanks to everyone for listening - please tell a friend (or benignly neutral acquaintance) and ask them to do the same! Cognitive neuroscientist and science writer, Bobby Azarian, returns to the Integral Stage for a deep and wide-ranging discussion of the emerging scientific paradigm -- the complexity science paradigm arising out of the intersections of physics, biology, neuroscience, and information theory -- that will likely shape self, culture, and society for the next century. If the universe is now known to be self-organizing through levels of developmental emergence, and if we are, as Carl Sagan once said, "a way for the cosmos to know itself," what really are the implications of such a view for all the domains of life that matter to us? This perspective, of course, is in its general outlines very similar to the one Ken Wilber outlined in Sex, Ecology, Spirituality, but the science has developed since Wilber published SES; so Bobby and Layman explore those developments, and how they further reinforce, and in some cases update, the synthesis Wilber offered several decades ago. Bobby Azarian is a cognitive neuroscientist (PhD, George Mason University), a science journalist, and author of the book The Romance of Reality: How the Universe Organizes Itself to Create Life, Consciousness, and Cosmic Complexity. He has written for The Atlantic, The New York Times, BBC Future, Scientific American, Slate, The Huffington Post, Quartz, The Daily Beast, Aeon, and others. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals like Human Brain Mapping, Cognition & Emotion, Acta Psychologica, and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. His Psychology Today blog (Mind in the Machine) has received over 8 million views, making it one of the most popular blogs on the website. He has been a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience, the Michael Shermer Show, The David Pakman Show, The Jim Rutt Show, The Young Turks, the Singularity University podcast, and many others. He helped develop multiple episodes for Season 2 of the YouTube Premium series Mind Field, which won the show its first Emmy nomination. He is a pro at audio and music production, and is currently working on an educational podcast based on his new book.

A krajina, tá bude znášať dlhodobé znečistenie. In this conversation based on his new book, The Romance of Reality, cognitive neuroscientist Bobby Azarian explains how for centuries the question Why do we exist? was the sole province of religion and philosophy. According to the prevailing scientific paradigm, the universe tends toward randomness; it functions according to laws without purpose, and the emergence of life is an accident devoid of meaning. But Azarian argues that out of complexity science and the phenomenon known as emergence, a new cosmic narrative is taking shape: Nature's simplest “parts” come together to form ever-greater “wholes” in a process that has no end in sight, and that life is moving toward increasing complexity and awareness. Carl Sagan was right when he said of humanity that “we are a way for the cosmos to know itself.” Shermer and Azarian discuss: laws of thermodynamics and directionality • how complexity formed after the Big Bang • laws of nature: discovered or created or both? • Stephen Jay Gould and contingency vs. necessitating laws of nature • convergent evolution and directionality in evolution • the left wall of simplicity • leading theories for the origin of life • complexity theory and emergence • consciousness, the self, and other minds • free will, determinism, compatibilism, panpsychism • Is there purpose in the cosmos? Bobby Azarian is a cognitive neuroscientist (PhD, George Mason University) and a science journalist. He has written 100+ articles — many reaching millions of views — about science, technology, and philosophy for publications including The Atlantic, New York Times, BBC Future, Scientific American, Slate, Huffington Post, Quartz, Daily Beast, Aeon, among others. Azarian has authored numerous academic papers, published in peer-reviewed journals such as Human Brain Mapping, Cognition & Emotion, and Acta Psychologica. His blog “Mind in the Machine,” hosted by Psychology Today, has received over 8 million views. Azarian worked with The Atlantic and Huffington Post to create viral videos, which he helped write the scripts for and narrated.

People who are less open about their sexuality may be less likely to experience pleasure because they may regard pleasure to be psychologically improper. This is heavily influenced by how our society labels and looks at sexuality as a taboo which goes back to history.    In this episode, Rachel Gross busts the myth surrounding the female reproductive organs and shares how we can attain pleasure by understanding our anatomy and its function and how this is something not to be ashamed of.Rachel is an award-winning science journalist focusing on reproductive and sexual health, based in Brooklyn, NY. A recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship, Knight Science Journalism Fellowship, and former digital science editor of Smithsonian magazine, Gross writes for the BBC Future, the New York Times, and Scientific American. Rachel is also an experienced public speaker and panelist and has moderated Congressional Briefings on basic science, performed for the national storytelling show Story Collider, and hosted educational videos for Scientific American. She is also the author of the new book Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage. In this episode, we discuss: Shame and society's conception of genitals Clitoral Complex: female pleasure, anatomy, and function  The female reproductive organ is interconnected and complex. It's more than just what we see.  Female reproductive system's role in pleasure and arousal We could make the birthing experience pleasurable when we have a full understanding of the female reproductive organ's anatomy and its role.  Bad history of ‘vaginal orgasm' and ‘clitoris orgasm' impacts negatively the way we look at our own sexuality Rewriting our thoughts about the female body, and the active role of the female reproductive organ in fertilization Rachel talks about the importance of understanding your own sexuality and the benefits of integrating this into sexual education Key Takeaways: Familiarizing yourself with your sexual anatomy is not something to be ashamed of It is possible to have a comfortable and enjoyable vaginal childbirth because of the female reproductive organ's natural process Integrating with sex ed is a good way to make kids be engaged in their own changing bodies, understand their natural needs, and address warning signs Many people feel like it is taboo or inappropriate to discuss pleasure but when approached with an open mind, this could actually open up doors to self-discovery and appreciation   Tweetable Quotes:   “I think that the lens really changes when you view this as a system that's working together, both in reproduction but also in sexuality and arousal. So again, like it's not the vagina, or the clitoris or the vagina and the clitoris, it's they're both intertwined.” - Rachel Gross“I think on the female side, first of all, we need to be way more like pleasure positive and talk about your body as like something beautiful to explore and have curiosity about rather than starting with a place of fear.” - Rachel Gross   Connect with Rachel Gross:  Twitter: twitter.com/rachelegross Website: https://www.rachelegross.com     Connect with Debra!   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/debra.pascalibonaro Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/orgasmicbirth/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/debra-pascali-bonaro-1093471/ Visit https://www.orgasmicbirth.com/ for more information on how to have fulfilling and enjoyable births. MSG, the umami seasoning frequently added to Chinese cuisine, came under fire on 4th April, 1968 - when Dr Robert Ho Man Kwok wrote a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine musing about the possible causes of a ‘syndrome' he experienced whenever he ate at Chinese restaurants in the US. But her recent comments about defining a woman and when life begins seems to raise red flags. During the hearing, Sen. John Kennedy asked when life begins, and she said she doesn't know. Then Sen. Blackburn asked her to define the word "woman," and she replied with, “I'm not a biologist.” Is she fit to be a Supreme Court justice? But there's a parallel body of work on rest. And something like 60% of people that were surveyed came back and said they didn't feel that they were getting enough rest.  So whatever we're doing with all this sedentary time we're not finding it particularly restful. And they have this thing they call movement snacks. So you get up every 20 minutes and you do some crawling around the room or you hang from your door frame or you lift ...
