The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism 02/20/25. Today's broadcast was moved to Thursday to allow the Katherine Massey Book Club to resume its original position on Friday evening. We use this Thursday evening to see if any listeners thought of suggestions for "Young Academic," who last week disclosed his mental health struggles after facing years of Racist obstacles en route to becoming a black male educator. Listeners encouraged him to find affordable non-white therapists in his area who can help him develop strategies to heal and process the Racist abuse. We'll also see if non-white workers have been effected by President Trump's attacks on so called DEI and the streamlining of federal employment. Brandon Tensley penned a great piece examining how the razing of federal employment harms black workers. #NoPoliticsOnTheJob #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

A February 2024 New York Times/Siena College poll reveals as many as 23 percent of Black respondents said they would vote for Trump if the election were held right then. In this month's “Meet the BIPOC Press” feature with URL Media, our guests fill in the blanks in the media coverage and correct some of the misconceptions about affirmative action, systemic racism, and how we got here. Who counts? Voting rights under Joe Biden | Battle for the Soul of America

Emily Tamkin presents Battle for the Soul of America, a three-part series from the World Review podcast that looks at Joe Biden's first year in office. How have some of his core campaign pledges – on foreign policy, immigration and voting rights – held up? In our final episode, we look at the state of voting rights under Joe Biden. Just over a year ago, on 6 January 2021, supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington, DC. They believed what Trump said: the presidential election was stolen, not lost to Biden. Since the attack, unsubstantiated assertions of voter fraud have sparked a Republican movement to restrict voting access. While Biden has denounced this attack on democracy, voting rights activists are critical of his lack of action. Is it too late to save American democracy? Emily Tamkin is joined by Dr Keisha Blain, associate professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, and Brandon Tensley, a national political writer at CNN who heads the Race Deconstructed newsletter. Then she speaks to Sylvia Albert, director of voting and elections at democracy watchdog Common Cause, about anti-democratic trends under the Biden administration and what can be done to reverse them. Further Reading: Emily on why the 6 January attacks never ended. Emily reports on the four-pronged attack on American democracy. Emily on why Joe Biden's failure on voting rights could cost the Democrats the White House. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

There's something mystifying about powerful voices. Sure, everyone can open their mouth and sing, but when we watch a force like Whitney Houston do so, it's abundantly clear there's a vast divide between her and us mere mortals. But we take such voices for granted, often celebrating their talent by simply listening. What we don't appreciate is the work it takes to get there, the work it takes to maintain such power, and the true musicianship behind every note. As The Opus continues its journey into Whitney Houston, host Andy Bothwell learns about the training and athleticism behind a voice like Houston by speaking with singer Bartees Strange and opera singer Dr. Donna Mitchell-Cox. Later, Dessa (of Doomtree Records) breaks down the science behind Houston's voice, while CNN's own Brandon Tensley explains the unexplainable -- specifically, why her voice impacts us in ways we can't always understand. It's hard to underestimate Whitney Houston’s stardom. For better and for worse, the world knows so much more about the late diva than we do about most artists from her era. Houston's meteoric rise would eventually place her own personal life under a microscope, and it's the tragic details that all too often overshadow her unparalleled legacy and groundbreaking influence. Looking back, though, Whitney Houston wasn't just a pop star. She wasn't just an incredible voice. No, she was a trail blazer, the first of her kind, who opened the door for so many artists to follow. For its highly anticipated 10th season, The Opus plans to trace those footsteps, and put a spotlight on the star that was born with 1985's Whitney Houston. Join host Andy Bothwell as he talks with music writer and chart historian Chris Molanphy about the records Houston broke with her self-titled debut. Then listen as writers Britt Julious, Brandon Tensley, and musicians Sophia Eris and Bartees Strange explain how Houston's position on the Billboard charts meant so much more than just record sales.

If you're like most Americans – or most people on earth – you have a pair of jeans, or maybe five, in your wardrobe. There's a decent chance you're wearing jeans right now. These humble pants were invented by a Reno tailor in the 1870s in response to a frustrated customer whose husband kept wearing through his pants too quickly. How, then, did they become a global phenomenon expected to exceed $100 billion in sales by 2025? Joining me to help answer that question is historian, writer, and screenwriter, Dr. Carolyn Purnell, author of Blue Jeans. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode music is “Blue Jeans,” composed by Josef Pasternack and performed by the Peerless Quartet in 1921; audio is in the public domain and available via the Library of Congress National Jukebox. The episode image is “Five Idaho farmers, members of Ola self-help sawmill co-op, in the woods standing against a load of logs ready to go down to their mill about three miles away,” photographed by Dorothea Lange in Gem County, Idaho, in October 1939 for the Farm Security Administration; the image is in the public domain and available via the Library of Congress.Additional Sources:“The Origin of Blue Jeans,” by Joseph Stromberg, Smithsonian Magazine, September 26, 2011.“The History of Denim,” Levi Strauss & Co., July 4, 2019.“Riveted: The History of Jeans [video],” PBS American Experience Season 34, Episode 1, February 7, 2022. “Durable and enduring, blue jeans turn 150,” by Jessica Green, NPR Weekend Edition Sunday, May 23, 2023.“Behind 150 years of the world's most famous denim jeans,” by Gordon Ng, Vogue Singapore, May 3, 2023.“How Denim Became a Political Symbol of the 1960s,” by Brandon Tensley, Smithsonian Magazine, December 2020.“Throwback Thursday: Levi's — Right For School?” Levi Strauss & Co., September 24, 2015.
