Football Is Family is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Your Favorite Sports' Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARYWe talk to Gary from @garysgumballs about his work with making helmets into beautiful works of art. Check out his Twitter page and see what I'm talking about. This was a fun interview- I always enjoy talking to someone who is passionate about football, especially when that same person has a lot of talent as well.ABOUT FOOTBALL IS FAMILYDo you bleed your favorite football team's colors each weekend? Does the difference of a W or L in the box score dictate how you respond for the rest of the week? Or do most of your conversations with your family and friends revolve around your favorite football team?If you answered yes to any (or maybe all) of these questions, then you are in the right place. The host of this podcast truly believes that “Football Is Family” and he is on a mission to share the stories of other fans out there sharing how they have been touched by the greatest sport on Earth. Listen below to the trailer and learn more about the host and show.HOST - JEREMY MCFARLINGrowing up in Middle Tennessee, I didn't have a pro football team that was close enough to me to feel a part of. My first memory of pro football was Super Bowl 22. I picked the Broncos to win, and, even though they didn't win, I followed them from that point on.John Elway was (and is) my favorite player. I have played as the Broncos on Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Bowl Super Bowl, Madden, and 2K Sports. I fondly remember the moments when the Broncos won Super Bowls 32 and 33.Around this time, the Oilers came to Tennessee. I was hooked. I finally had a team just down the road from my hometown of Bon Aqua. Oiler (and later Titans) mania hit this area. Jerseys, hats, footballs, merchandise, and several autographs later, I'm a Titans fan through and through. It's the dedication, the love, and the passion for football that helps me realize that football is family. Each fan base has a story, a history, and a love for their team. That's what I want to talk about each and every podcast. You can follow me @jeremy_mcfarlin. Message me if you want to share your reasons why your football team is family.

In their last episode of 2022, Nat & Alli take it easy with a nice light Wes Anderson movie about... a broken family of egomaniacal has-beens, neurotic eccentrics, and semi-incestuous geniuses. Just in time for Christmas! The Royal Tenenbaums may have launched Anderson's mainstream success, but how does it hold up 21 years later? How does it handle Margot's bisexuality? Bust out your normcore, Nat & Alli are taking it back to 2010 with modern high school classic Easy A. Directed by Will Gluck and written by Bert V Royal, Easy A pays loving tribute to John Hughes and his contemporaries, rips shamelessly from John Hughes and his contemporaries, and talks a lot about John Hughes and his contemporaries. CONTENT WARNING -- -- -- This episode includes conversations about sexualized violence, rape, and childhood SA. -- This week, Nat and Alli are taking a cozy little jaunt up to Sweden. We'll look at the fjords, ride the metro, and definitely overlook the country's seething undercurrents of fascism, racism, and misogyny... Just kidding, we're talking about David Fincher and Steven Zaillian's unflinching adaptation of Stieg Larsson's brutal mystery/social commentary, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Starring Rooney Mara in the titular role as hacker Lisbeth Salander opposite Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist, Dragon Tattoo is a excoriating examination of Sweden's dark side – both its history of Nazi collaboration and its present mistreatment of women, immigrants, and the neuro-atypical. Nat and Alli kick off the countdown to Halloween right, by discussing Joel Schumacher's blood-soaked teen Vampire classic: The Lost Boys (1987). Although it's not explicitly bisexual, the film contains more queer eroticism than you can shake a stick at, particularly from Kiefer Sutherland as iconic bad boy David Powers. Nat & Alli are joined in the Snoysters studio by NYC playwright Victoria Provost to discuss Cloud Atlas. The Wachowski Sisters' and Tom Tykwer's 2012 adaptation of David Mitchell's 2004 novel of the same name, Cloud Atlas is a science fiction epic that blends six storylines separated by continents and centuries into the journey of a single soul/identity/consciousness. Willkommen! And bienvenue! Welcome! Nat and Alli discuss Bob Fosse's 1972 classic Cabaret, which Roger Ebert termed the "movie musical for people who hate musicals." The final link in a chain of circuitous adaptations, Fosse's Cabaret centers on the intense relationship between actress Sally Bowles and writer Brian Roberts. Nat and Alli cover a popular reinvention of a major superhero franchise that's previously struggled to find its cinematic footing, particularly its love interest because the actress said in an interview that she included the character's canonical bisexuality in her creative process (although the film's director was quick to clarify that this queerness wasn't officially part of the film's story). DISCLAIMER: This episode contains a discussion of the aesthetics of fascism and how Top Gun can be read as a fascist film. To be clear, we are in no way suggesting that director Tony Scott, writers Jack Epps Jr. & Jim Cash, or any other person involved in the making of Top Gun is a fascist or holds fascist sympathies. Rather, our intention is to examine how fascist imagery and ideas infiltrate popular culture and prey on our emotions. Nat & Alli feel the need for speed and there's only one prescription: big, dumb, homoerotic 80s action schlock. Without a trace of rose-tinted nostalgia, the Snails and Oysters team finally gets to the bottom of the age old question: Is Maverick bi? Yes. Obviously. Show Notes We're back to wrap up our coverage of SD Gundam Mk II, with parts 2 and 3 in a double header! Luckily (?) there's not much substance to part 2. But Part 3? We've got thoughts. We've got feelings. We've got a lot to say. Plus in the research Thom runs through some of the fun inside jokes and references peppered throughout the episode. Unfortunately SD Gundam Mk II, Part 3 does come with a content warning for transphobia at around the 12 minute mark. We do discuss this in the podcast, and there is a warning before the discussion begins for the benefit of any listeners who would prefer not to hear it.** Daruma Whiskey:** The actual brand is Suntory Old Whisky, but the bottle is said to resemble a Daruma. Sometimes it is packaged in a bag that looks even more like a Daruma. Roleplaying Games of the Late 80s: SD Gundam's Princess somewhat resembles Dragon Quest 1's Princess Gwaelin The infamous "But thou must!" scene from Dragon Quest I's English version. A page explaining how the gacha-esque lottery system in Dragon Quest II works can be found here. Gashapon Machines: Although it doesn't mention Japan, this page from Gumball machine and bulk candy seller Gumballs.com describes the development of the first toy vending machines. Penny Shokai (importers of the first capsule toy machines in Japan) were eventually bought by toymaker Takara-Tomy. In this recent tweet they celebrate the history of gashapon and show a picture of a Tomy-brand gashapon machine from 1988 - contemporaneous with SD Gundam Mk II. Here is a history of the gashapon industry over time. In 2017, Bandai issued a press-release celebrating the 40th anniversary of their gashapon business. The press release can be found here, and webpages re-stating its contents can be found here and here. During our research we found an interview between two gacha industry leaders about the history of the industry. However at time of writing the website is not accessible. An archived copy can be found here. Bandai's original 1977 gashapon machine bears a striking resemblance to the machine shown in SD Gundam Mk II. Traveling Merchant Backpacks (Tabetobako): English language sources (mostly antiques dealers) like to call these box/backpacks 'gyosho bako', presumably corresponding to the Japanese 行商 (gyosho, or peddler) and 箱 (hako, box). Examples: one and two. Japanese sources seem to prefer the term タベト箱 (tabetobako), for example, this one from the Aomori Prefectural Museum, or more specific terms like 薬箱 (kusuribako, medicine box), for example, this page from the Naito Museum of Pharmaceutical Science and Industry. A blog comparing the tabetobako in the Aomori Prefectural Museum to the one that appears in Demon Slayer. Here, Hakodate City offers a brief description of Meiji era trade, mentioning the sorts of things that tabeto would sell as they traveled. Kabuki Food Vendors: This page on the website for Kabuki-za outlines the many food options available at the theater. This blog describes a trip to see kabuki and mentions the shouts of the food vendors. Brief discussion of the intimate relationship between food and kabuki, including a type of sushi named for a kabuki play. A blog post about the food experience at Kabuki-za. Here's a very detailed dive into the historical experience of going to a kabuki play with a lot of information about food. Waste Paper Collection: The Japanese Wikipedia page for 古紙, or used paper, includes a brief mention of the private small scale collection industry known as ちり紙交換 (chirigami koukan). This (English language) rundown of recycling practices in Japan briefly mentions independent collectors and the industry's susceptibility to price fluctuations. This page by a paper recycling company talks about the history and the reasons for the decline of chirigami koukan. The company in question was founded by a former waste paper collector who left that part of the industry when it collapsed. Chapter 2 of this paper by a team at Waseda University discusses the evolution of the paper recycling industry in the Post-War era: 都市における資源循環システムの再編 と地域社会の変動. It can be downloaded here. This article from June 2000 talks about the history of chirigami koukan and supposes that economic conditions might be right for a return of the industry. This page has pictures and videos of chirigami koukan trucks in action, as well as an explanation for the decline of the industry and a quote from a former collector. Nat and Alli are joined by filmmaker Peter AKA @gorbachev_simp to discuss David Lowery's 2021 fantasy film, The Green Knight. Adapted from the 14th century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," the movie leans into its source material's bisexuality subtext, while also questioning the Arthurian cycle's values of honor, masculinity, and chastity. Snails & Oysters celebrates Nat's birthday by discussing one of his favorite movies: Robert Altman's 2001 "whodunnit where you don't care who did it," Gosford Park. From the beginning, Altman and producer Bob Balaban intended to use the conventions of the Christie-esque "parlor mystery" to examine class dynamics between the World Wars – and the roots of class conflict today. With a cast the size of a small nation and a script penned by future Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, Gosford Park turns the genre on its head the way only Robert Altman could. Nat and Alli close out 2021 with writer, writers' assistant, and labor activist Olga Lexell, who visits Snails & Oysters Studios to talk about 2009's camp horror classic Jennifer's Body. Widely misunderstood on release, recently a new critical consensus has arisen that director Karyn Kusama and writer Diablo Cody's collaboration was NOT "Twilight for boys," but a wry, incisive, and blisteringly intelligent satire of 2000s sexual politics, popular culture, and political learned helplessness. Nat and Alli talk 2013 festival darling Blue Is the Warmest Colour, directed by Abdellatif Kechiche and starring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux as lovers Adèle and Emma. The film was controversial on release for its explicit sex scenes, both due to the usual moral panic and because many Queer viewers found the film's portrayal of Lesbian sex absolutely ridiculous. The controversy was compounded by Exarchopoulos and Seydoux's accounts of Kechiche's abusive behavior on set. Is it possible to view such a talked-about movie in isolation? Being an ecommerce seller, it's always nice to hear success stories from fellow entrepreneurs. But sometimes, the stories can feel quite distant and unrelatable, and while it's nice hearing about the good stuff, it's also important to listen to stories about losses and failures. Tal is well-known in our community as a successful ecommerce entrepreneur who is comfortable sharing all the bad things that he's overcome in his journey. In this episode, we'll be talking about how he got into ecommerce with his first brands, the ups and downs of running a business, and which factors to consider when you're torn between turning a failing business around or selling it altogether. Tal Moore discovered his knack for business at the ripe young age of 12 years old. Selling gumballs to his friends ultimately led him to launch Gumballs.com, one of the largest online vending machine retailers. Tal is also the founder of many other businesses, including Franklin's Popcorn, Guardline Security, and Softy Wipes. He has given so much to the ECF community over the years and I'm excited to have him here. Listen in as Tal shares his story through entrepreneurship, including how he managed to have the conviction to turn down a sales offer for Guardline, the personal toll it took on him, and how he decided to stay the course with the business. We also talk about how the downturn in his business actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise when the pandemic hit, as well as how COVID played a role in the subsequent upturn. What do you do when you want to solve a problem? You simplify it with a powerful metaphor. In this week's ZoneTalk podcast episode, I sat down with Matthew Cartisser, a resilient and successful young athlete who is currently prepping for college, with aspirations of being a surgeon. Matthew is no ordinary athlete. First, he chose to take up trap shooting, a sport that none of his friends participated in. And second, he started his life behind the eight ball, so to speak, with a benign cancerous facial growth at 12 months of age. He fought back with incredible strength during multiple surgeries only to get Lockjaw after facial reconstruction. At that moment, his simple dream was that someday he would be able to chew a gumball – and he successfully climbed that mountain. From that day on, Matthew has represented every new goal and challenge in his life as just another "gumball" ...win competitions...make the national All-American all-star team...graduate from college...become a surgeon. Matthew talks to us about his journey, his challenges and the gumball machine he received from his surgical team. Regardless of your sport, there are some great take-aways in this podcast that are applicable to athletes and their coaches on aspiring to great success in your sport, school and life.

The mission statement of Providence is to Make, Grow, and Unleash disciples of Jesus. But when it comes to the children God has placed in our care we rarely emphasize the Unleashing. Students in middle and high school are getting critically close to that important time of their lives, and we as a church have important roles to play in helping them Grow to meet those challenges. Student minister Chris Hodge shares how Providence Students aims to partner with parents so that when a student is Unleashed to their next phase of life, they do so rooted in the gospel and as committed disciple of Jesus.
Our time is short, our opportunities limited, but we rarely feel the weight of this. At Providence, we want to be aware of the opportunity we have with our kids. We want to partner with parents to make sure we all make the most of the time we have to invest in our kids. This week Jessica Willings teaches us about the value of a single gumball.

Time Codes: 00:24 - Introduction 02:16 - Setup of interview 03:40 - Interview with Erin Nations 51:50 - Wrap up 52:14 - Contact us In December of 2016, Top Shelf Productions published the first issue of Erin Nations's Gumballs, the one of four issuesthat would be released over the course of the following year. This quarterly ran as a one-personal anthology, a collection of stories and observations, many of which were autobiographical in nature. Gumballsstood out among its peers in that it recalled the kind of comic books we used to get from other alternative creators such as Seth, Daniel Clowes, and Chris Ware. Now those creators have turned to the “graphic novel” or book form, and it's a rarity that we get a comic book like this, making Gumballsstand out as a title of note. Now those four issues have been collected as a trade, one that has just been made available in the direct market and next week will be out for wider release. In this interview, Derek talks with Erin Nations about the genesis of his Gumballsseries, his thoughts on being an autobiographical cartoonist, how he uses comics to chronicle his transitioning, and the various tones he strikes among the many stories contained within his series.

It's the first of the month, and that must mean that it's time once again to look at the latest Previews catalog. In fact, there's so much to choose from, that this month's Previews episode is an extra-long show...running for almost three hours! Are the Two Guys up to the challenge? Do they heroically take on an unwieldy amount of material, or do they unnecessarily extend what could have been covered in a more manageable hour and a half? Listen to the episode, and you decide. Have you ever been falling into a black hole and thought, "how did this infinite curve in spacetime even get here, anyway?" Well, the next time you're hurdling towards the infinitely dense Singularity, which exists only in time but not in space and is possibly a hole in the 4-dimensional universe, you can listen to this episode! Objects in spacetime, or gumballs in frosting? YOU decide! This week the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics discuss Trump: The Complete Collection, Sean Lewis and Hayden Sherman's The Few #1, and Erin Nations's Gumballs #1.
Time Codes: 00:00:31 - Introduction 00:02:48 - We stand with John Lewis! 00:08:44 - Trump: The Complete Collection 00:58:22 - The Few #1 01:11:46 - Gumballs #1 01:25:12 - Wrap up 01:25:58 - Contact us This week the Two Guys with PhDs start off by getting political. While some listeners might not like it when Andy and Derek become polemical on the podcast, the guys just had to speak out about the brouhaha surrounding Congressman John Lewis's recent comments on Trump's illegitimacy. The Two Guys stand with Representative Lewis, a man of courage, honor, and action. And it's heartening that copies of March are selling out all over the place! But enough of the bad Trump. The guys find more serious another entity of that name, this one orchestrated by the legendary Harvey Kurtzman. Trump: The Complete Collection is the second volume in Dark Horse's Essential Kurtzman series. This beautiful hardbound edition collects the only two issues of Trump ever published, as well as the many never-before reproduced illustrations from what would have been the third issue of the magazine, had Hugh Hefner not pulled the plug. Both Andy and Derek appreciate the collection -- especially Denis Kitchen's outstanding essay and annotations! -- and while some of the humor appears dated (or even falls flat at times), this text stands out as an indispensable historical contribution. After that Derek and Andy check out two recent #1 issues, Sean Lewis and Hayden Sherman's The Few (Image Comics) and Erin Nations's Gumballs (Top Shelf/IDW Publishing). The former is a leisurely paced and extra-long issue centered around a future where the United States is now a fractured territory due to water scarcities (at least the guys think this is the series' premise). Sherman's art stands out here. And Gumballs is a single-creator anthology that's a mix of autobiographical sketches, character portraits, and poignant cultural observations. The guys look forward to seeing what transpires in both of these series.

Caleb started selling gumballs from a machine at age 4. Now age 10, Caleb earns about $100 a month from his machines. Caleb and his father created a kids book they hope will teach others about ASSETS, SAVINGS, INVESTING, and CHARITY - things we all wish we had learned at an earlier age (am I right?) Matt is a former Air Force pilot who was looking into various side hustles to support his family after some salary cuts at work. After hustling and selling used books (among other things), he realized it really wasn't sustainable and took up too much of his time. That's when he found a gumball vending machine for sale on eBay for $36. The seller was local in Houston so he drove over with two of his kids and picked it up. Filling it with candy from Sam's Club, he knocked on doors of businesses until he found a home for it at a local karate studio. A couple weeks later, he went back and it was filled with quarters!
Drogan, LankerZ and Paul talk about the new Gumball leaks, Nuk3town and the new Advanced Warfare weapons. Again. For the 3rd time. Also we had no show notes this week so we were super unprepared :D

If you want to improve your bottom line, you'll find that determining a better price for your product is far less painful than trying to drive costs down. As some business people grow more sophisticated in their pricing and do more than just set prices by conjecture, one expert wonders why most businesses don't set prices scientifically. Dr. E. Andrew Boyd, who appears regularly on KUHF-FM's Engines of our Ingenuity and in the pages of Analytics, has worked with major airlines setting prices. Hear him explain the history of pricing and reservations in the airlines - including the unexpected roll of gumballs. What you'll learn will surprise you.
