Ralph welcomes Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs to discuss what's motivating anti-Palestinian extremism in Israel, how the U.S. has been complicit in Israel's theft of Palestinian territory and genocide against the Palestinian people, and what the United Nations can do to help achieve a lasting peace. Plus, we share Ralph's recent column: "Israeli Leaders' Objective All Along Has Been the Expulsion of Occupied Palestinians and Seizure of Their Remaining Land."Jeffrrey Sachs is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he holds the rank of University Professor (the university's highest academic rank) and he served as Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University from 2002 to 2016. Mr. Sachs has also served in numerous positions at the United Nations, including as President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The reason that diplomacy is not happening is perfectly obvious. Which is that the core of this government does not want diplomacy, even if it were to deliver security. Their aim is not security through diplomacy. Their aim is “Greater Israel.”Jeffrey SachsI have lived through…watching the U.S. government abandon so many projects, from Southeast Asia through the Americas—these have been terrible projects often—but the U.S. loses interest, it moves on. And Israel needs to actually live in its neighborhood if it's going to survive. And counting on military might to do that is a profound mistake. It's eating away at its own fundamental capacity to act as a society—the idea that you can stand alone in the world community and have no one support you. This is a huge mistake. So I've tried to say to my counterparts in Israel…that this path is not only wrong and immoral, but doomed to fail as well.Jeffrey SachsThe Palestinians have one of the highest literacy rates—97 % — in the world. Under dire conditions, they have accomplished farmers, physicians, scientists, engineers, poets, musicians, novelists, artists, and a deep entrepreneurial tradition carried on by the Palestinian diaspora around the world. It is no accident that Israeli bombers directly target Palestinian cultural and educational institutions in their recurrent assaults on Gaza. Israeli militarists have to degrade all Palestinians… to expel them from their ancestral lands.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 4/10/241. An unsettling story in Business Insider recounts how the Israeli military uses an AI system – chillingly called “Where's Daddy?” – to track Hamas militants to their homes. As one IDF officer put it, “We[‘re] not interested in killing [Hamas] operatives only when they…[are] engaged in a military activity…On the contrary, the IDF bomb[s] them in homes without hesitation, as a first option. It's much easier to bomb a family's home.” This policy of bombing family homes “as a first option” is a major factor in why so many Palestinian families have lost unimaginable numbers of relatives in Israeli strikes. IDF officers added “human input in the target identification process…[is] essentially [to] ‘rubber stamp' the machine's picks after little more than ‘20 seconds' of consideration — which was largely to double-check the target is male.”2. As we know from the recent polling on the issue, only 22.5% of Democrats now support military aid to Israel, while 83% want a permanent ceasefire. More surprising is that only 41% of Republicans want the U.S. to send military aid to Israel, and 58% want a permanent ceasefire. This poll is now joined by a similar poll from the United Kingdom, showing 56% of the British public – including 74% of Labour Party voters – support their government refusing to sell more weapons to Israel, with only 17% in support of continuing such sales. Pressing on this issue, progressive members of Congress Mark Pocan and Jan Schakowsky have penned a letter to President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken “strongly urg[ing them]…to reconsider [their] recent decision to authorize the transfer of a new arms package to Israel and to withhold this and any future offensive arms transfers until a full investigation into the [World Central Kitchen] airstrike is completed…to continue withholding these transfers until those responsible are held accountable [under U.S. or international law and]…to withhold these transfers if Israel fails to sufficiently mitigate harm to innocent civilians in Gaza, including aid workers, and if it fails to facilitate – or arbitrarily denies or restricts – the transport and delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.” This letter was signed by 37 additional Democratic members of Congress – mostly the typical progressives, though with one extremely notable addition: Nancy Pelosi, signifying how mainstream this position has become.3. In yet another sign of the shifting political winds, Delaware Senator Chris Coons – a consummate moderate and perhaps President Biden's closest ally in the Senate – has come out in favor of conditioning military aid to Israel, Axios reports. Coons added “I've never said that before, I've never been here before.”4. Yet even as the Democratic Party shifts., Biden has continued his blind support for Israel – resulting in continued success for the “Uncommitted” electoral protest movement. In Wisconsin, the “uninstructed delegation” option won nearly 50,000 votes statewide – over 8% of the vote – and over 30% of votes in the precincts representing the University of Wisconsin-Madison. And it hasn't stopped with Wisconsin. In Connecticut, “uncommitted” won over 11%; in New York, blank ballots accounted for 12%; and in Rhode Island, “uncommitted” won a whopping 14.5% of primary voters statewide. John Nichols at the Nation tabulates that as of now, over half a million Democratic primary voters have given Biden a clear message: “Save Gaza!”5. The controversy surrounding Oscar-winning Zone of Interest Director Jonathan Glazer's acceptance speech continues to drag on. This week, over 150 major Jewish creatives signed an open letter supporting Glazer, per Variety. These signatories include many household names, such as Joaquin Phoenix, Elliott Gould, Joel Coen, David Cross, Amy Berg, Boots Reilly, Hari Nef, Ilana Glzazer, Wallace Shawn, and many, many more. This letter states “We are Jewish artists, filmmakers, writers and creative professionals who support Jonathan Glazer's statement from the 2024 Oscars. We were alarmed to see some of our colleagues in the industry mischaracterize and denounce his remarks…Their attacks on Glazer are a dangerous distraction from Israel's escalating military campaign which has already killed over 32,000 Palestinians in Gaza and brought hundreds of thousands to the brink of starvation. We grieve for all those who have been killed in Palestine and Israel over too many decades...We honor the Holocaust by saying: Never again for anyone.”6. In some positive news, the National Labor Relations Board reports union election petitions are up 35% in the first half of Fiscal Year 2024, with unfair labor practice charges up 7%. The NLRB is quick to note that this increased caseload coincides with a long-term funding crunch that has seen their offices shrink by 50% over the past 20 years. NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo writes “Congress needs to fully fund the NLRB to effectively and efficiently comply with our Congressional mandate when providing quality service to the public in conducting hearings and elections, investigating charges, settling and litigating meritorious cases, and obtaining full and prompt remedies for workers whose rights are violated.”7. In Ecuador, a diplomatic crisis is unfolding with Mexico after Ecuadorian forces stormed the Mexican embassy to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who had sought – and been granted – asylum at the Mexican embassy. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, or AMLO, decried this as a “flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico.” CNN reports this provocation prompted AMLO to suspend diplomatic relations with Ecuador and pursue a case against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice. For its part, the U.S. State Department issued a statement saying “The United States condemns any violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and takes very seriously the obligation of host countries under international law to respect the inviolability of diplomatic missions.”8. NBC4 Washington is out with a blockbuster report on gun running within the D.C. Metro police department. Put simply, “For at least seven months in 2020 and 2021, the D.C. area's largest police department was…the only place D.C. residents could legally get a handgun.” Incredible as that may seem, that much was already public knowledge. Now, federal documents have been uncovered showing that a remarkable number of these guns ended up at crime scenes. In fact, “So many guns [were] recovered at crime scenes, in such a brief period, that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives placed D.C. police into a program designed to give extra scrutiny to dealers with higher levels of so-called crime guns.” In other words, D.C. cops, far from getting guns off the street, were in fact releasing so many guns on to the street that federal firearms regulators had to step in. So much for police improving safety.9. According to CNBC, “Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes initiated an investigation into tech magnate Elon Musk on Sunday…concern[ing] possible obstruction of justice by Musk, who said over the weekend that he would defy the court's orders to restrict or suspend some popular accounts on its platform.” This comes as part of a larger investigation into “so-called digital militias, a term applied to people accused of spreading misinformation online to attack democratic institutions in Brazil.” While the list of accounts flagged by the Brazilian government is not public, Wired reports this list includes “the fugitive far-right influencer Allan dos Santos, a supporter of president Jair Bolsonaro. (Dos Santos fled the country in 2020 to avoid investigation for disseminating disinformation.)… [and] right-wing YouTuber Bruno Aiub, known as Monark, who has over 1 million followers on X and has argued that Brazil should recognize the Nazi party, and Brazilian billionaire and Bolsonaro-supporter Luciano Hang.”10. Finally, you might have heard that Amazon is shutting down the “Just Walk Out” technology at its grocery stores. This technology supposedly relied on an entirely automated system of cameras and sensors to track what people picked up at the stores and charge that to their Amazon accounts. Yet, Gizmodo reports “Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped.” This genre of story has become all too common – companies trumpeting ‘automation' when in fact all they're doing is outsourcing with extra steps. Just another reminder to remain skeptical of claims by big corporations. Often flashy new tech is just a smokescreen for regular old labor exploitation. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. This week we start by reviewing Dane Elcar's compelling sci-fi horror film BRIGHTWOOD (2:23), which follows a troubled couple (Dana Berger and Max Woertendyke) who become trapped in the woods while they're out for a run. Next, we cover Stewart Thorndike's frustrating horror movie BAD THINGS (24:19), which follows a group of friends (Gayle Rankin, Hari Nef, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Rad Pereira) who spend a chaotic weekend at the hotel one of them has inherited. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, in honor of the late William Friedkin, we talk about his 1977 thriller SORCERER starring Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, and Francisco Rabal.
Stewart Thorndike made a splash with LYLE in 2014, establishing her as an exciting new voice in horror. Her latest film. BAD THINGS, further solidifies this, with its focus squarely on (queer) female characters who aren't afraid to be messy. In Mike Leigh's play ABIGAIL'S PARTY, filmed for television in 1977, Beverly Moss is the life of the party...whether the party wants her to be or not! Then, Jordan has one quick thing about THEATER CAMP.BAD THINGS is out on Shudder and MGM+ on August 18, 2023.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Stewart Thorndike
This week Thomas, Chris, and Dusty discuss Hari Nef's rising star and the career of the legendary Debra Messing.
Elle takes a stab at reflecting on the movie everyone is talking about - and seeing! In the program she discusses the patriarchy, and gender-based hierarchies in general, asking "How does patriarchy affect trans people?" She also explores some of the overt and covert trans themes in the film, and how the experience of femininity and womanhood expressed in the film is shared by her and her trans siblings. Some of the resources mentioned include: Billie Eilish's song "What was I made For?" - watch the youtube music video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW8VLC9nnTo An article with Hari Nef and Them Magazine: https://www.them.us/story/hari-nef-barbie-trans-representation Another great piece in Collider reflecting on Hari Nef's inclusion and representation in the movie: https://collider.com/hari-nef-barbie/ As always, reach out to Elle with questions or ideas or constructive feedback at: twatpodcasting@gmail.com
It's finally here. The double feature of the century. Barbie and Oppenheimer.
Hey everyone, well, I've finally seen Barbie. I have been one of the few people in the Internet movie space who has not been all that excited for this film... despite being a pretty big fan of Greta Gerwig and a lot of the cast. The trailers haven't looked great to me and to be honest, the Film Twitter overhyping of this film kind of turned me off even more. With that said though, to celebrate what will probably once be a worldwide holiday - Barbenheimer - I decided to check this film out... even if it was a couple of weeks late. This podcast was recorded during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn't exist. Looks like the PG-13 live-action Barbie isn't exactly child's play. That's right, we're taking a close look this week at Barbie, a smash hit at the box office and fourth film by Greta Gerwig, star of such massive projects like "How I Met Your Dad." A fantasy comedy released alongside a far more "serious" Christopher Nolan movie, Barbie has a lot of critics living in a metaphorical dream house this weekend. The "Barbenheimer" double feature phenomenon has definitely overshadowed a lot of the conversation around these individual movies. No longer! We're reviewing these one at a time, starting with...well, you know. Barbie was co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The film also boasts a huge ensemble cast: America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Simu Liu, and many more. It opened nationwide on July 22 through Warner Bros. and has a 114-minute runtime. Our intro music this week is “Jazz is Good” by Weiter & TheMusicalcurrent. [This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription. And yes, I do speaking engagements.]There are two highly anticipated films being released this week. One of them is about an iconic and controversial public figure from the 20th century, their influence on how we perceive ourselves and each other, and how they reflect the enduring cognitive dissonance between our stated values as a society and the reality of our myriad systemic hypocrisies. The other movie is about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb.Greta Gerwig's “Barbie” is somehow both the perfect summer flick—hilarious and fun as hell—and an unflinching critique of a universal brand that has sold more than a billion dolls since its launch in 1959.This is the fourth directorial effort from Gerwig, who received consecutive Oscar screenplay nominations for her two previous films, “Little Women” (2019) and “Lady Bird” (2017), the latter of which garnered her a directing nod, only the fifth woman to be in that category. She is also an exceptional actor. Her performance in “Frances Ha” (2014)—one of my favorites—was widely praised and led to a Golden Globe nod for Best Actress in a Comedy.Gerwig does two things particularly well in her work: she makes us laugh, and she makes us think. It is no surprise then that “Barbie” feels like an especially potent trojan horse, beckoning us with well-earned laughter into a larger conversation on gender and how Barbie—the defining cultural symbol of high femme expression—has shaped that discourse over the past six decades.Neither preachy nor pandering, Gerwig is searingly honest and admirably fair in the screenplay she co-wrote with longtime partner Noah Baumbach. Barbie, the iconic doll, is rendered here—played brilliantly by Margot Robbie—as neither saint nor villain. She is an ever-changing projection of social views that have amalgamated during her tenure at the top of the toy world. Gerwig drills into that dynamic at the center of the film's plot. Barbie, who is initially depicted in a montage of the Barbieworld utopia—a gorgeous Dreamhouse, a sexy Barbie Convertible, great friends, perpetual sunshine—is randomly confronted with thoughts of death and finds herself literally caught flat-footed. She consults with Weird Barbie—the iconoclast of Barbie Land, played pitch perfect by Kate McKinnon—who explains to her that these changes are from the outside world, the thoughts of a girl playing with her.Barbie reluctantly sets out to find this girl in the real world and make things right, so she can get back to her daily utopia. She is joined by Ken (Ryan Gosling), who cannot perceive of himself as anything other than an extension of Barbie and the two are shocked to find that the real world is an inverse of gender power dynamics. In Barbie Land, the Barbies run everything and the Kens (and poor Allan) are merely accessories, but in the real world, Ken discovers the fast-food-like joys of patriarchy in a hilarious sequence of scenes while Barbie contends with unbridled misogyny for the first time. Moreover, upon finding the young woman who played with her, she learns that Barbies are considered by many girls to be enablers of the patriarchy. If this all seems like a lot, it's a testament to Gerwig's brilliance in putting it onscreen, in which zippy dialogue and clever sight gags in a visual feast acknowledge the nuances of Barbie's complicated legacy without even a hint that we should give up on Barbie. On the contrary, Robbie imbues Barbie with such empathy and charm that it's impossible not to root for her.And yet, Gerwig doesn't shy away from putting Mattel on blast, whom are depicted in the film as an all-male Board of Directors led by Will Ferrell, who humorously attempts to get Barbie out of the real world and back to Barbie Land. Ferrell's clumsy attempt to insist to Barbie that women are important to Mattel's history while surrounded by his all-male colleagues is one of the funnier bits of dialogue in a flick packed with hilarious exchanges and zingers. Many of those zingers and other thoughtful lines are delivered by an outstanding supporting cast: Rhea Perlman, Issa Rae, and Emma Mackey among them. I was quite delighted to see Hari Nef play one of the Barbies with substantial dialogue, and she is magnificent in this. Some fun cameos include Dua Lipa and John Cena as mermaids (ahem, excuse me, Cena is a “Kenmaid”).Without giving anything away, I was particularly taken with America Ferrera's performance as Gloria, an employee of Mattel and mom of the teen girl being sought out by Barbie. Ferrera is an outstanding generational bridge between contrasting views on Barbie, her character having a complicated nostalgia for the doll while her daughter rejects it. But it's Ferrera's monologue on what it means to be a woman about two-thirds through the film that marks a standout moment. Honest, funny, and a bit depressing, the speech captures the essence of what makes Barbie's legacy so uneven. It serves as an anchor for the story, forcing the viewer to confront some unhappy but necessary truths.Again, what makes Gerwig's vision so brilliant is in how the seriousness of the film's discussion on gender neither washes out the fun nor is diminished by it. It's a tightrope act that Gerwig walks with fantastic balance. The film wouldn't be nearly as fun without her honest framing.Gosling is especially a joy to watch. The Ultimate Himbo, after discovering patriarchy in the real world, Ken rushes back to Barbie Land to become something of a Jordan Peterson guru to the other Kens, except where Peterson has zero charm and is the dipshit's idea of a smart man, Gosling is quite hilarious and charming in parodying him.As Ken realizes that he has to define himself separate from Barbie and not treat her as the source of his self-worth and therapeutic needs—HINT HINT HINT—Barbie is realizing that she may want a lot more with her existence than what she's always had.Don't worry: no spoilers, but the ending is particularly moving and well-written.I'm going with my girlfriends to see it again on Saturday. We will all dress in hot pink and laugh at the biting humor. Then, we'll probably get drinks and talk about Gerwig's clever approach in unpacking the complexity of Barbie and the closing line of the movie, which alludes to how this whole conversation on gender and womanhood is based on a doll without a vagina.“Barbie” is in theaters this Friday, July 21st. Four stars. Go see it.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. #theidol #lilyrosedepp #theweeknd The Idol is an American drama television series created by Sam Levinson, Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, and Reza Fahim. The series focuses on an aspiring pop idol (Lily-Rose Depp) and her complex relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader Tedros (Tesfaye). Appearing in supporting roles are Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, Ramsey, and Hank Azaria. The series also marks the final television appearance of Anne Heche, who died on August 11, 2022. Development on the series began in June 2021 when Tesfaye announced that he would be creating, executive producing and co-writing a drama series for HBO alongside Fahim and Levinson. Joseph Epstein and Amy Seimetz were attached to serve as writer-showrunner and director, respectively. Seimetz's initial approach on the project was that of a troubled starlet falling victim to a predatory industry figure and fighting to reclaim her own agency. Depp was cast to play the female lead opposite Tesfaye in September 2021, with the remaining cast announced between November 2021 and July 2022. Much of series was filmed when Levinson took over directing duties after Seimetz exited the project amid its production delay and creative overhaul in April 2022. Levinson scrapped Seimetz's work and production resumed in May 2022 in a different direction. Principal photography occurred in Los Angeles and Bel Air. The Idol began airing on HBO and Max on June 4, 2023. Its first two episodes premiered in May 2023, at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with unfavorable reviews from critics for its sexual content, themes, script, and direction. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

We're back! Did you miss us? This week Ione and Eden are discussing the trend that's dominated our Instagram feeds: In and Out lists. Written by everyone who's anyone; from Jemima Kirke and Hari Nef, to pretty much every influencer you've ever followed; the internet has become enamoured with notes app lists predicting what we will and won't enjoy in 2023. But do we really care what these people think? Or are they just away for us to flex our impeccable taste to our followers? We're discussing how the trend feeds in to our obsessions with 'cores' and what those who love or hate the new (micro)trend cycle both get wrong about what it means for our cultural landscape.Order Ione's book, Poor Little Sick Girls, here!Have an opinion and want to be featured on an upcoming episode? This week the kids cover Sam, Levinson of Euphoria's Assassination Nation (2018). Josh and Drusilla have some very uncomfy discussions. Josh is very anxious to talk about this movie, which seems very divisive. We love Hari Nef. But first! All about Carmel, Indiana and Peter Bogdanovich's Targets (along with What's Up Doc?, The Last Picture Show, and Paper Moon), Danny DeVito and Roger Corman. Drusilla finally saw Barbarian and LOVED it. She loves Zach Cregger. She also saw See How They Run and loved it, too. We love Sam Rockwell! On our latest film roundtable, we host a conversation between Isabel Sandoval, Hari Nef, and moderator Ximena Prieto. The three start with a discussion regarding setting, introspection, and reflection, and Isabel points to the impact of nature well as the importance of sunlight on creative input. Hari delves into her response to prompts as a writer, and the interaction with New York as a source and force to contend with, reflecting one's place in the constellation communally and individually. Isabel discusses her early films as a calling card for her work as a talent behind and in front of the camera, remaining true to an intimate vision which she would not compromise on; Hari dives into this specificity, starting with the visual and political voice of Apparition, continuing with Señorita (Isabel contending with “third world cinema”) and expanding into Lingua Franca. They also discuss fictional historical narratives and the visual departures taken in Sandoval's latest film, Shangri-La, which will screen at Venice Film Festival this year, and what this could mean for Isabel's storytelling style going forward. Other highlights include Hari discussing the embrace of chaos and discipline, creating as a reflection to the world around you, Hari playing Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream at fifteen, and Isabel divulging the influence of Jeanne Dielman on Lingua Franca. Finally, we close with a question about the conscious inclusion of Identity Aesthetics, versus an unplanned and perhaps inevitable apparition of lived experience onto visual expression, as well as the importance of not becoming mired in either expectations or discourse, letting go, and having fun.

Hari Nef was the the first openly transgender woman signed to IMG Models, starred in the Emmy-winning television series Transparent, and is currently working on writing her own television series, which you'll hear all about in this episode! Tune in for a spicy episode: in the words of Hari, “I actually took a poll on my finsta, ‘should I go on the Girilboss podcast?' And the two options were ‘go on and be spicy' or ‘die cool.' We discuss the swift rise and fall of Netflix's queer branding strategist, young millennial queer culture's personal branding obsession, assimilation into corporate culture as a reverse resistance optic, media millennials washing their personal interactions with buzzterms and marketspeak, and how young LGBTQ+ narcissists regard the AIDS crisis as an obstacle that successive generations can claim as an empowerment narrative despite total removal from the tragedy and zero personal stakes. Then we remember our hero Larry Kramer and talk about the instant backlash against him on the day of his death, on the part of wimps, sex addicts, and losers. We also get into the modern syndrome of judging past behaviors through today's moral majority standards. Plus: The Jeffrey Epstein docuseries, Bill Clinton's affair with Ghislaine Maxwell, Racist Amy in Central Park, Hot Christian the gay bird watcher, cops getting away with murdering black people, the Jenny Jones murder, Kiki Kannibal, early-2000s MTV reality shows, and more! He appeared on Broadway dancing behind Rudolph Nureyev and the Joffrey Ballet in Homage to Diaghilev at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. Stan worked in casting before moving to Los Angeles, where he's been part of one of the longest running comedy writing teams, Zimmerman & Berg. Along with James Berg, Stan's worked on many television series, including season one of The Golden Girls, Brothers, Fame, Hooperman, Something Wilder, Roseanne, Wanda at Large and the highly successful fifth season of Gilmore Girls. They penned the "Norman Mailer, I'm Pregnant" episode. Z&B (as they're also known) have 2 WGA nominations to their credit -- "Rose's Mother" from The Golden Girls and the other for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", the infamous lesbian kiss episode of Roseanne. Besides writing & producing many television pilots, Z&B rewrote the Emmy and Peabody award winning Annie for ABC. They have also written for film, including both Brady Bunch movies. The Brady Bunch Movie was honored by American Cinematheque. The Q&A panel with Jim, Stan, Shelley Long, Gary Cole and director Betty Thomas can be seen on youtube.com. Z&B created and exec produced two seasons of Rita Rocks, a half hour comedy series on Lifetime starring Nicole Sullivan and Tisha Campbell-Martin. They're much talked about new pilot script -- Silver Foxes, a gay men's Golden Girls, had an epic reading with George Takei, Leslie Jordan, Bruce Vilanch, Todd Sherry, Cheri Oteri, Daniele Gaither & Melissa Peterman. Stan conceived, adapted and directed, SUICIDE NOTES: In Their Own Words, which won a Hollywood Fringe Festival 2015 Encore Producers' Award. The show starred Oliva d'Abo, Allie Gonino, Peter Onorati, Brendan Robinson. It's a one hour theatre piece in the vein of The Vagina Monlogoues. There was a benefit/reading of the play, now entitled Right Before I Go, Monday Dec 4 2017 at NYC's Town Hall. The all-star cast included: Ellen Burstyn, Judith Light, Michael Cerveris, Hari Nef, Maulik Pancholy, Alice Ripley, Lois Smith, Amber Tamblyn, Raviv Ullman and Vanessa Williams. A one night benefit of the play was performed at The Ratner Museum in Bethseda, Maryland June 2018 and in Orlando at The Mezz in Sept on International Suicide Prevention Day. Stan performed in the piece as "The Narrator" in Orlando and for a two night engagement at Claremont High School in Oct. That show was performed by high school students, faculty and school board members. He returned to Bethesda July 2019 to perform again, but this time with a mostly teen cast from The Achieve Project. My guest today is the wonderful Hari Nef: model, actress, activist and first trans woman signed to IMG Worldwide, one of the biggest model management firms in the world. She has graced the covers of publications such as Elle UK, Love Magazine and Interview, and has appeared in editorials in Vogue and Wonderland Magazine, among others. She may be currently best known for her role in the Emmy award-winning series TRANSPARENT. Hari currently lives in LA and is currently starring in the Gucci Bloom fragrance campaign alongside Dakota Johnson and Petra Collins. Most recently Hari has starred in black comedy thriller Assassination Nation (also starring Suki Waterhouse) which is out now in UK cinemas. It is about a group of best friends live in a world of selfies, emojis, snaps and sexts. But when their town of Salem is besieged by a massive data hack, resulting in half the citizens’ private info spewed into the public view, the community descends into anarchy. The Times have called it "The Crucible for the Instagram era" and critics at The Guardian have said it "feels like the product of a one-night stand between Spring Breakers and The Purge."In this episode we chat about the film, dealing with internet storms, how to follow your gut when choosing which projects to work on and why she loves working on thrillers that centre around social media. Hope you enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jason Solomons wraps up the 62nd BFI London Film Festival featuring Stan and Ollie director Jon S Baird and Hari Nef from Assassination Nation.
