What happens when healthcare leaders, innovators, and technology experts gather around a single mission: keeping patients at the center of every decision? At the Patient at the Center Symposium, hosted under the Straight Outta Health IT program, Christopher Kunney guided a series of conversations with healthcare leaders, innovators, and executives focused on redefining patient-centered care. The event featured Eugene Greyfer, founder and CEO of Advocaid and Chief Operating Officer at Veritas Health Services, who shared how his work in Texas Medicaid exposed a critical gap in access to diabetic supplies. He explained how Advocaid combines connected hardware and software, including a dual blood pressure and glucose monitoring device with built-in cellular connectivity, to help underserved patients transmit real-time health data to providers, fully covered through Texas's remote patient monitoring (RPM) program. The symposium then expanded into broader system-level innovation with Jeffrey Heenan-Jalil, founder and CEO of hunterAI, who entered healthcare innovation after losing his brother to cancer and now focuses on healthcare financial transparency through AI-driven spend analytics. He described how his platform analyzes millions of transactions across hospital systems to identify inefficiencies, duplicate payments, and misaligned supplier contracts, with the goal of returning value back into hospital systems for reinvestment in patient care. Mitali Paul, Administrator for the Department of Surgery at Houston Methodist and board member of the Southeast Texas chapter of ACH, emphasized that patient-centered care is not a philosophy but an operational standard, reflected in her organization's nationally recognized outcomes and commitment to quality, compassion, and culturally competent care.Additional perspectives came from Ini Ekiko Thomas, Vice President at Memorial Hermann Health System and leader of its Innovation Hub, who highlighted the challenges startups face when working with large health systems, particularly around compliance, cybersecurity, vendor vetting, and aligning technology to real clinical or operational problems rather than “shiny object” solutions. Finally, event organizers Brittany Jones and Verndon Samuel of Gozio Health, alongside Josh Sol of FTI Consulting, explained that the symposium's purpose was to bridge the gap between providers, IT leaders, and innovators in a local setting where real collaboration could occur beyond large national conferences.Tune in to hear how today's healthcare leaders are turning innovation into real-world impact by putting patients at the center of everything they do! Sophia Lorey is fresh back from Washington, D.C.—where she stood outside the U.S. Supreme Court during hours of oral arguments in two major girls' sports cases. In Episode 62, Sophia is joined by attorney Brittany Jones, President of Kansas Family Voice (https://kansasfamilyvoice.com/about/), who was inside the courtroom as the justices grilled attorneys on the meaning of sex, equal protection, and what Title IX was always meant to protect.Together, they break down the two cases—Little v. Hecox (Idaho) and West Virginia v. BPJ—and explain why the legal questions matter far beyond those states. Brittany walks listeners through what it's like to attend Supreme Court arguments in person, what stood out from the bench, and why the court's questions often hint at the next cases already coming down the pipeline. You'll hear reactions to some of the most striking exchanges, including pointed questions about defining sex and whether separating sports by sex is “discrimination”—and why the stakes aren't theoretical for female athletes. Sophia and Brittany also connect the moment to state-level fights (including California), and explain how a strong ruling could shift the pressure back onto legislators in states that still refuse to protect girls' sports.Links mentioned:

Educators around the country have been increasingly interested in expanding the teaching of African-American history, and many resources have been created to help. At the same time, scholars have begun to explore how African-American history is represented in these resources, in standards, in popular textbooks, and beyond. One emerging scholar in this area is Brittany Jones, an assistant professor at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. Her work explores how emotions are represented in the curriculum, how we can help students consider the lived emotions of those in the past, whether or not some types history should be deemed "difficult" for students, and much more. On this episode, Brittany discusses these issues and how she arrived at these questions.Episode ResourcesBrittany Jones's Faculty PageCenter for K-12 Black History and Racial Literacy EducationBrittany's Google Scholar PageThe 1619 Project CurriculumKey Articles by Brittany JonesFeeling fear as power and oppression: An examination of Black and white fear in Virginia's U.S. history standards and curriculum frameworkWhat is the word “difficult” doing in social studies research?: A systematic literature review of empirical research on difficult knowledges and histories, 2004–2022ESD ResourcesBrett Levy's Open Access Research ArticlesEducation for Sustainable Democracy SiteESD Facebook Page (Please like!)ESD YouTube Channel (Please subscribe!)Related ESD EpisodesIntegrating History & Current Events and Creating an Open Classroom Climate, with Amber Joseph (East Side Community School, New York City)Engagement & Equity in Civic Education, with Professor Jane Lo (Michigan State University)Guiding Productive Political Discussions, with Diana Hess (University of Wisconsin-Madison)Support the show
Like recent guest Mac Driscoll, Brittany too was appointed to an open seat on council. Unlike Mac, Brittany is unopposed on the ballot and voting that wraps up Tuesday. We're (unfortunately) by no means a hub of deep intellect in NWO, but Dr. Jones is about as close to a polymath as we likely have here. From a love of writing to a PhD of...well, not writing! I'll let her explain because her educational background is even over my wannabe-intellectual mind.

Ozempic. Wegovy. What are these medications everyone's talking about for weight loss right now? Are they the "miracle drug" they're being made out to be?
