GUEST: Jen Robin, CEO & Founder of Life In Jeneral — an organization company based in Los Angeles, CA. HOST NOTES: Jen and I first met a handful of years ago at a women's networking event in Los Angeles. She was so kind, intentional, thoughtful — and I could tell her work ethic was unmatched. Our friendship further developed after Jen invited me to go to our former church (@churchome) one Wednesday evening — which we attended nearly every week thereafter until the pandemic. What's more, Jen and I have become supporters of each other's businesses — I have used her organizing company multiple times (both to reorganize both my former home and office in Los Angeles, and also to move my life and business across the country earlier this year). I am so proud to have Jen as my first guest on the show, and am floored with how honest and transparent she was in this interview across all topics. Through sharing invaluable info, tangible tactics, many laughs, and a few tears — Jen and I officially launched the Marrin Costello Radio Show with a bang. INTERVIEW: Do you crave order in every aspect of your life? Jen Robin does — and from this yearning for order and excellence, she created a massively successful company — eponymously called Life in Jeneral. As the CEO of her organizing company, custom closet company @lijspaces, and organizer's business class @lijacademy, Jen's early mission to create companies to change people's lives has been realized ten fold. TOPICS: Work-Life Balance Scheduling + Time-blocking Pivoting during the Pandemic Creating Business Plans Hiring + Firing Focus + Clarity Faith + Spirituality Personal Growth Company Culture Navigating Relationships Los Angeles' influencer on her businesses The silver lining of the pandemic Upcoming Projects + Companies Jen's Source of Inspiration (hint hint — it's her dad :) RESOURCES: Guest: @jenrobin @lifeinjeneral @lijspaces Host: @marrincostello @marrincostelloradio Producer: Joey "Q" Quenga | @OnAirWithQ Broadcast: Originally aired on Dash Radio via Island City: 2.13.2021

Show Notes – Episode 17 Are there times that you feel really stressed out? I bet you do, right? We all do. Perhaps you are stressed because you walk into a home that has clutter and you would rather have a home that is organized? Or you could feel stressed because you can never find your items or are late for appointments. Or you are really busy and can’t keep up with demands that you are facing? You could be a busy professional and work is really demanding and/or a busy mom or dad that is spending a lot of time driving your kids to activities or appointments, or helping them with their homework. Or you could be a busy entrepreneur and believe me when I say, I know how stressful running a busy can be. So you are not alone. So what do you do to help reduce your stress level? One way of reducing stress is by meditating. I have to admit, I do not meditate and don’t know much about meditating, but wanted to learn more about it and that is why I invited meditation educator Jen Johannsen as a guest this week so we could discuss the benefits of meditating and the different types of mediation. I had no idea there were 8 types! We also discuss Colour Calm which is kind of cool! Jen is super sweet and knows her stuff when it comes to meditation. She was first introduced to the benefits of meditation as a school psychologist. So let’s dive right in and get started. About our Guest: Jen Johannsen is a School Psychologist turned Meditation Educator! She used to think meditation was annoying and that sitting and doing “nothing” does not change anything. Not anymore. After 7 years of psychological education, 12 years as a school psychologist, hundreds of hours in certified meditation teacher training, and years of personal meditation trial and error, she has now developed Jen’s School of Calm Course that allows others to decrease their stress and increase their happy with simple, step-by-step non-weird meditation. Or you go to your closet and yikes it is a mess and you don’t know where to find something? It’s easy for us to let our bedroom closet get out of control and filled to the point of bursting. When our closet is unorganized and cluttered we tend to always reach for the same clothes week in and week out, and feel like we never have anything to wear. Did you know that most of us wear the same 20% of our clothing all the time and not wear 80% of our clothing? The exception to the rule is when people have a hard time keeping up with their laundry. In this episode I cover 7 tips that you can follow to help you have a more organized closet. I will be covering clothes, shoes, purses, and more! About Kathy McEwan Kathy McEwan, BA. If so, I am going to share with you how I have been feeling lately, how my tasks have been falling behind, and what I did to help me get more organized. As many of you know, I am the owner of a home organizing business and there are 6 of us on the team, and we are growing. If I listed all my responsibilities, I would be here all day and you would be bored silly. Plus so much more. Oh my gosh that is a lot! All these responsibilities were taking a toll on me and I could barely keep up. I was working 7 days a week. And then my father got very ill with cancer. I now had the responsibilities of running the business, and taking my father to his appointments and talking to nurses and doctors. It was just a brief consult done from a park bench in Brussels. He and the other owners had become aware of a competing firm that had been acquired by a larger company and wanted to try to do the same thing. The conversation centered around the best strategy… hiring an intermediary, hiring someone in-house to try to find a suitor, etc. During this time, my client made a little comment about how he and the other founders of the company were working almost 16 hours a day and how they found it impossible to hire people to help them out. I made this recording telling the story and how you can go about fixing it. Listen here (audio only on YouTube): https://youtu.be/9n68EuvNXfw Needless to say, it is quite difficult to convince someone to pay money to buy a business that needs this kind of management engagement. Proper businesses have structure, organization and everyone knows what they’re responsible for and what duties they need to get done. Without this, it’s impossible to grow and it sure does look scary for anyone looking at buying. The topic was very apropos as I’m in the middle of creating my latest workshop; Building a Business that Someone Will Want to Buy. We speak with Regina Lark, author, speaker and expert in chronic disorganization and hoarding. She discusses the characteristics found in those who are chronically disorganized, and teaches us common organizing principles and techniques to help us stay organized. Overcoming psychological barriers that prevent us from being more organized will help us establish productive habits and behaviors. Among the topics discussed are: planning time in your schedule for organizing, the concept of "social organizing", re-assigning value and re-evaluating one's attachment to objects, making sure objects have a "home", and obtaining clarity on the functionality of a space.
