Carlotta Brentan narrates this near-future dystopian novel set in a time of ecological disaster in the mostly underwater community of Island City. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss Téa Obreht's newest novel. Brentan portrays the cast of characters smartly by subtly shifting tone, cadence, and timbre. The once stately Morningside building is now home to “repopulated” folks who are part of a government program. Mysteries shroud this imaginative work. Films about cities tend to take a deep dive into the cultural and political fabric that drives its residents. But today's Lost and Found, which is Ruchika Oberoi's Island City, takes a satirical stab at the isolated, marginalized yet hopeful lives that many lead in India's Maximum City. This one packs three connected stories that allude to the fears, regrets, dreams and joys that make Mumbaikars from various walks tick. The first, starring Vinay Pathak, features a single-minded executive with a corporate firm being assigned a day off and handed ‘fun coupons' to unwind. This regimented exercise to help employees break free is triggered by a study that pins the company's slipping productivity on overworked staffers. The second and most compelling story of the three features a saas-bahu pair who find the time and opportunity to indulge in all that they desire when their mutual link slips into a coma. Headlined by the remarkable Amruta Subhash and the instinctive Uttara Baokar, this onscreen saas-bahu jodi tethers on dangerously dark humour, a rarity among over-the-top Hindi comedies. The third one's a love story featuring Tannishtha Chatterjee, a daily wager whose life takes a turn when she receives an anonymous love letter. Ecstatic at the prospect of the unknown, her character romanticizes an idyllic life with this andekha anjaana, even while she's engaged to be hitched soon. Bagging the Fedora Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2015, Island City is a dark and delightful triptych-of-sorts that's synonymous with Mumbai. After all, it's a city that doesn't curb your dreams, allows you to choose your preferred path, pulls you up and sends you reeling and yet, keeps you hopeful for a tomorrow that will make it all worth your while. You can watch Island City on Disney+Hotstar, Airtel Xstream and EpicOn Well, that's the Lost and Found film for today's podcast, I shall be back again soon with a new episode. Until then it's your host Nikhil signing out.

GUEST: Jen Robin, CEO & Founder of Life In Jeneral — an organization company based in Los Angeles, CA. HOST NOTES: Jen and I first met a handful of years ago at a women's networking event in Los Angeles. She was so kind, intentional, thoughtful — and I could tell her work ethic was unmatched. Our friendship further developed after Jen invited me to go to our former church (@churchome) one Wednesday evening — which we attended nearly every week thereafter until the pandemic. What's more, Jen and I have become supporters of each other's businesses — I have used her organizing company multiple times (both to reorganize both my former home and office in Los Angeles, and also to move my life and business across the country earlier this year). I am so proud to have Jen as my first guest on the show, and am floored with how honest and transparent she was in this interview across all topics. Through sharing invaluable info, tangible tactics, many laughs, and a few tears — Jen and I officially launched the Marrin Costello Radio Show with a bang. INTERVIEW: Do you crave order in every aspect of your life? Jen Robin does — and from this yearning for order and excellence, she created a massively successful company — eponymously called Life in Jeneral. As the CEO of her organizing company, custom closet company @lijspaces, and organizer's business class @lijacademy, Jen's early mission to create companies to change people's lives has been realized ten fold. TOPICS: Work-Life Balance Scheduling + Time-blocking Pivoting during the Pandemic Creating Business Plans Hiring + Firing Focus + Clarity Faith + Spirituality Personal Growth Company Culture Navigating Relationships Los Angeles' influencer on her businesses The silver lining of the pandemic Upcoming Projects + Companies Jen's Source of Inspiration (hint hint — it's her dad :) RESOURCES: Guest: @jenrobin @lifeinjeneral @lijspaces Host: @marrincostello @marrincostelloradio Producer: Joey "Q" Quenga | @OnAirWithQ Broadcast: Originally aired on Dash Radio via Island City: 2.13.2021

Cynthya Porter knows how to sell Winona. She can rattle off the festivals, the historic downtown sweet spots and the natural landmarks that residents love and visitors are awed by — like how on a clear day at the Garvin Heights outlook, you can see all the way to Alma. Winona was recently named one of the best five small-town destinations in the state by the Star Tribune, and best day trip by Twin Cities-based City Pages. But do those accolades play any role in getting people to move here? We asked Porter, the marketing specialist at Visit Winona, that question and more on this week's episode of Inside Winona. Take a listen to learn a lot, including why she finds our city "surprisingly weird, but incredibly entertaining."

In this week’s unexpectedly raunchy episode of Failure to Launch, we examine Island City, a world ravaged by formerly-human-now-super-strong-neanderthals, the victims of a genetic experiment gone wrong. The remnants of humanity cower inside the fortress-like Island City, desperately searching for a cure. Well… I’ve used words like “cower” and “desperate”, but for the most part everyone’s really relaxed about the whole situation. So much so, that when a rescue worker is lost in the mutant-infested wasteland and given 48 hours to live, the rest of his team just grab a drink, catch up on some sleep, kinda, y’know, have a bit of R&R. Just 48 hours of “me” time. Also, Abraham Lincoln hits on someone’s mum. Oh, and there’s eugenics, and everyone’s cool with it (including the writers). This was a weird one. Community Cafe is BCB's newest podcast radio show for Bainbridge Island. Each episode is like a 15 to 25-minute conversation over coffee with a friend describing a community need or issue that matters. On this first episode of Community Cafe Bainbridge, Kathy Cook, the very experienced Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Bainbridge Island explains the City's Comprehensive Plan and the 2-year public process that is now starting to update the Comp Plan for the first time since 2004. The City has named the Comp Plan long-term update process: "Navigate Bainbridge: Charting our Future Together". The title emphasizes the City's view that the process will benefit from many constituencies working together, including island residents, the Planning Commission, City staff and the City Council. Kathy describes the two public meetings that will mark the start of the process: - Tuesday, July 22, 7-9pm, an open public meeting called "Comprehensive Plan 101", located at Bainbridge High School Commons - Thursday, Aug 28 (tentative date): Planning Commission public meeting to determine how the public process for the Comp Plan update should work, located at City Hall In this 22-minute interview with BCB host Barry Peters, Kathy Cook also describes the range and scope of the existing Comp Plan -- element by element.
