In this episode of Enterprise Sessions from the University of Bristol, Professor Michele Barbour sits down with Professor Ash Toye and Professor Jan Frayne, two leading biochemists whose long‑standing research partnership has evolved into one of the UK's most exciting biotechnology spin‑outs: Scarlet Therapeutics.Together, Ash and Jan share the remarkable journey from academic collaboration to scientific breakthrough — and ultimately to founding a company built on the promise of lab‑grown and engineered red blood cells. What began as a quest to understand red blood cell development became a platform capable of producing universal donor cells, modelling rare diseases, and creating “blood as medicine” through engineered therapeutics. This episode goes far beyond the science. Ash and Jan discuss the reality of spinning out a wet‑lab biotech, the commercial challenges, the importance of the right CEO, and the dynamics of co‑founding a company with a long‑term academic collaborator. They also speak candidly about funding frustrations, scientific obsession, conflict‑of‑interest tightropes, and the excitement of helping their postdocs become industry scientists.
In this episode of the Mindful Hunter podcast, we sit down with Kevin Toy from Hunt Source to dive deep into the realities of hunting, parenting, and building a meaningful community. We kick things off by discussing what it takes to instill grit and determination in the next generation, sharing personal stories about raising young athletes and hunters who aren't afraid of hard work. From there, we explore the evolution of Hunt Source and its mission to create a true community hub for Canadian hunters, connecting outdoorsmen with unique opportunities across the country. We also get real about the mindset required for consistent success in the backcountry. We talk about how true confidence is only built through undeniable evidence, the importance of taking extreme ownership of your failures, and why adapting to changing environmental conditions—like unseasonably warm weather during the elk rut or spring bear season—is the only way to consistently notch tags. Whether you are a die-hard archery elk hunter or just looking for a solid dose of motivation for life and parenting, this conversation is packed with hard-earned wisdom. Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast and Furious franchise, is officially set to direct Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions' live-action Helldivers movie. With a script from Gary Dauberman, Lin is reportedly focusing on character, world-building, and thematic depth as he brings the popular Arrowhead Game Studios franchise to film. The long-anticipated Amazon God of War TV series is now moving into pre-production, with Frederick E.O. Toye directing the first two episodes. Casting has begun for Kratos and Atreus, putting to rest ongoing speculation about who will take on the lead roles. Toye's previous work on Shogun, The Boys, Westworld, and Watchmen signals a high-quality adaptation. Meanwhile, recent rumors linking Christopher Judge to the role have been dismissed. A mysterious statue discovered in the Mojave Desert, tied to a teaser from Geoff Keighley, has sparked intense speculation about what game it represents. Fans have theorized connections to God of War, Diablo, Fallout, Doom, Baldur's Gate, and even Half-Life due to nearby road names, but multiple insiders have ruled out several of these possibilities. The statue continues to generate discussion as more clues appear. Industry commentary also includes discussion around claims from HipHopGamer regarding a new PlayStation experience that could feature elements from all generations of PlayStation hardware and include a social component reminiscent of PlayStation Home. This speculation opens broader conversations about what PlayStation, Xbox, and PC gaming may look like in the next hardware cycle. The controversy involving Bungie's Marathon art dispute has reached a resolution, with artist Fern “4nt1r34l” Hook stating that the issue has been resolved to her satisfaction. Additional updates include a significant reduction to Helldivers 2's PC install size, a new limited-edition Genshin Impact DualSense controller for PS5, the soft launch of MLB The Show Mobile on iOS and Android, and new accusations that Sony used generative AI artwork for its PlayStation Advent Calendar promotional campaign. Sporting Kansas City exorcized some demons against the Colorado Rapids Saturday Night in Children's Mercy Park, sweeping the season series with 4-2 win. We did see some adjustments to the setup moving Santi Munoz more centrally in more of a 4-3-2-1 as someone on this podcast suggested might be a good idea, and it largely improved Sporting's shape as well as Munoz' ability to impact the match. That said, it wasn't until the team switched back to the 4-4-2 late that they were able to create the 3 goal scoring barrage that took down the Rapids and had the fans in the stands screaming with joy. There were a number of performances to highlight in this one, both good and bad, because the while we want to celebrate the final scoreline, it was enhanced due to some rather key interventions by John Pulskamp and Ian James, as well as some fortuitous poor shooting in key moments by the Rapids. We will get into all of that, as well as discuss more in game adjustments by Kerry Zavagnin, as well as the ebbs and flows of watching this team play that can often be exhausting for the emotional centers of our respective brains at times. There were a number of other news stories in and around the Sporting KC/MLS Soccer Sphere this week, including a Leagues Cup final that might be making more news due to the actions after the the game than the ones during it, the KC Current continuing their winning ways, as well as Mauricio Pochettino continuing to anger a certain segment of the USMNT fanbase with his player selections. Finally we will do a quick preview of Sunday Night Soccer in Kansas City as Austin FC comes to town and SKC tries to string together a pair of positive results in a row.
For the Glory KC is back with the 144th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City broke a nearly two-month winless streak on Saturday night against the Colorado Rapids. The streak went back to their last win, also against the Rapids, on July 4th in Commerce City. And while "winless" is technically right, it was worse than that. Between victories over Colorado, Sporting KC were 0-5-1, with just a single draw against NYCFC.The defense was still flawed, and defense often starts further up the field, so there is blame to go around. Colorado should have scored far more than the two goals they put in, if not for outstanding individual efforts from John Pulskamp, Robert Voloder and Ian James. But it was something else that stood out on Saturday. With Manu Garcia still unavailable due to injury, Kerry Zavagnin finally used Santiago Munoz as a straight up #10. You could call it a second striker, but he was floating all over creating opportunities. He was involved in so many attacking sequences and seemed to unlock Sporting KC's creativity. Not every sequence ended with a shot, but there was so much promise.Another move I've been asking for is not starting all three strikers together. It leaves no impact subs on the bench to play forward. With Mason Toye starting on the bench, it was a combination of him subbing on and Santi unlocking the midfield that led to the game winning goal. Munoz played a perfect ball to Toye to finished with precision to push SKC over the line for their seventh win of the season.Of course, Sheena and I talked about a lot more Sporting KC happenings in this episode, including:Our favorite goal of the night (there were so many good candidates)Pulskamp heroicsThat James save off the line!Daniel Salloi showing man strengthInternational callups and so much moreThe KC Current did what we basically expect them to do at this point. Just keep winning. They've won twice since our last podcast and clinched a playoff spot. They aren't that far away from locking up the NWSL Shield. But ultimately, the season will be defined by what they do in the playoffs. Before we get there though, we talk through the victories over the Portland Thorns and North Carolina Courage. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:St. Louis fire their Sporting DirectorBarbra Banda done for the yearThe USWNT game at CPKC StadiumHere is a rundown of topics and start times:Sporting KC's big comeback victory - 8:22SKC make moves and Intl. Sporting KC's winless streak was extended to 5 games after a disappointing 3-1 loss in Orlando on Saturday Night after a substantial weather delay, making it 2 separate Kansas City soccer clubs facing significant delays to their matches vs. teams from Orlando in the same day.Kerry Zavagnin did bring the 4-4-2 back out for this match, although it was a different setup than the prior week and while some things worked, leading to a 1-1 scoreline at halftime, other things very much didn't. Manu Garcia's re-introduction to the injury list meant the bench was very thin and the choices Zavagnin made were less than optimal as the club appeared to run out of steam and quality as the match wore on and Orlando took advantage. As the team continues to lose ground on potentially eking its way into the playoffs, much of the conversation has shifted to the upcoming winter and the impending roster rebuild, with 17 players either out of contract or on an option year in 2026. Games like the last several also have us considering who may be seeing their last minutes in Sporting Blue.In Potpourri, we get into the Current vs Orlando game, and the NWSL scheduling debacle that turned into a 4hr delay. Also news around the league regarding a potential CSO candidate leaving his role in Montreal, as well as a number of players exiting Inter Miami as they find playing time hard to come by with Messi and Friends. And we had some fun news this weekend with the announcement that Premier League Mornings Live Fan Festival will be coming to Kansas City next month. Seems like that argument about soccer capitals only truly exists in certain people's minds. Finally we will take a look at SKC's upcoming trip to Seattle because we have to, but it's unlikely either of us will have a whole lot of optimism about how that match will go.
Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHWe're in Lagos. There's no snow on the ground despite the fact that it's Christmastime. We meet Fiyin who is excited about the holidays. Why? Because this is the year that she tells her best friend, Elo, that she loves him! It's time! Spoiler alert, it's not time...for them. Elo tells Fiyin that he is proposing to his girlfriend he's been dating for 8 months that I guess Fiyin didn't know about. Fiyin wastes no time hatching a plan to ruin his relationship with her. We also be Fiyin mom, Gbemi. She literally bumps into her ex, Zach. He's a hot shot deal maker who begins to shoot his shot relentlessly despite the fact that she has a man friend- Toye. They all go to this birthday party and Filo's cousin, Ivie, meets this guitarist named Ajani. The sparks are flying and they agree to go out sometime. At this party, Zach and Gbeni end up kissssinggggggg. UH OH!!!We meet Elo's girlfriend and she's phenomenal. She basically brought the covid vaccine to Nigeria. She's a hero. IS that gonna stop Fiyin? Nah. Zach keeps shooting his shot, bringing a bunch of gifts to Gbeni. She finally comes clean and is like Zach is my ex-fiance. He is like I love you and want to be with you but you should take some space.Ivie and Ajani go out on a date and it's clear that they're from very different lifestyles but it works for them. There is this side storyline for Elo where his mom doesn't want to celebrate Christmas because it doesn't feel the same without Elo's sister who was killed a few years ago. Ultimately, she comes around to it and surprises Elo by decorating the house. Gbeni tells Toye that she wants to spend the rest of her life with him and they decide to get married on Christmas. After the wedding, Fiyin decides to shoot her shot, tell Elo how she feels, and kiss him. Obviously his girlfriend sees them. He tells Fiyin that she's so selfish. She realizes she goofed so she goes to make it right and they end up making it right. And Ivie tells Ajani to visit her in London sometime.

For the Glory KC is back with the 115th episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City have folks a bit worried after a 1-0 loss to Florida International University. We talk through the concerns of the fans and weigh in on if we are concerned at all. Sheena and I also take a look at who did and who didn't play against FIU. After the game the media talked to Peter Vermes, Mason Toye and Stephen Afrifa. We learned a lot about Toye and his play style and Vermes gave important updates on signings, injuries and perhaps most importantly for a team that is incomplete, a new style of play. While there were no signings this week for Sporting KC, there at least was a rumor. Barcelona B midfielder Unai Hernandez. Then there is a smattering of Sporting KC topics we touched on from Alan Pulido's transfer fee being confirmed it can be turned into General Allocation Money (GAM), Toye's contract details, SKC license plates in Kansas and the uninspiring theme nights for Sporting KC this season. Major League Soccer (MLS) also rolled out some rule changes this week. The highlights: MLS has a new cash transfer system that includes fees to players involved Teams get two buyouts per season GAM no longer expires The secondary transfer window moved to July 24 through August 21 and more! Finally, the KC Current reported for preseason this past week as well. As a part of their arrival there were a couple noteworthy news items. [By popular request, an archive re-release from August 2018, featuring our extraordinary conversation with one of the central figures of the original North American Soccer League - from its chaotic formation in 1968 to its untimely demise in 1985.] + + + Soccer America columnist (and Episode #6 guest) Paul Gardner summed up this week's National Soccer Hall of Fame guest in his May 2015 commentary: “The debt owed by American soccer to Clive Toye is a vast one. It is not too much of an exaggeration to say, flatly, that without Toye's blind faith in the sport in the 1970s, pro soccer in the USA would have withered and died. Yes, Phil Woosnam and Lamar Hunt and Bob Hermann were there too. But in those unpromising years it was Toye's voice -- it came in a steady flow of ridiculously optimistic press releases and grandiose plans for a future that few others even dared to ponder -- that called loudest. “The New York Cosmos general manager credited with turning that league's fortunes around when he signed Pele to a contract in 1975. Toye, who was born in England and came to the United States in 1967 at the age of 33, was president of three North American Soccer League teams – the Cosmos, Chicago Sting and Toronto Blizzard – and general manager of the [original National Professional Soccer League and subsequent NASL] Baltimore Bays. [He] was an official of the NASL in helping it through its crisis year of 1969 and in its final months in 1985 – and helped to found the third American Soccer League in 1988. “There has always been the spirit of a showman in Toye, and surely it was that spirit that enabled Toye to overlook the virtual collapse of the old North American Soccer League and to see instead a glittering future for the sport in the USA, even to declare to anyone who was listening -- and not many were in those days -- the preposterous notion that the USA should begin preparing to stage the World Cup. “And when the NASL, by the skin of its teeth and by the mad devotion of Toye et al., did survive, it was Toye who gave the reborn league its glittering image with his invention of the Cosmos, with his canny maneuvering and dealing, who brought Pele and Beckenbauer to New York. Showmanship indeed.” Toye (A Kick in the Grass: The Slow Rise and Quick Demise of the NASL; Anywhere in the World) joins host Tim Hanlon for a lyrical and anecdote-filled journey through the pro league that he helped create, later put to rest, and which ultimately shored up the long-term foundation of the “beautiful game” in America. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: "Good Seats" Show & Defunct Team Merch: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: A Kick in the Grass: The Slow Rise and Quick Demise of the NASL (2006): https://amzn.to/3Ln1KAt Anywhere in the World (2015): https://amzn.to/3Y3TD3A SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable
The countdown to the UK election is being dominated by predictions of a historic Labour victory. Parties have been making their last pitches to voters, with reports Keir Starmer is projected to head the largest majority since 1832. But University of Exeter Modern History Professor Richard Toye told Mike Hosking that Starmer isn't being complacent when it comes to pushing people to the polls. He said there's a slightly odd situation in which other parties have been saying that Labour is bound to get an enormous majority, so people should vote Conservative in order to keep that majority down, while Labour is sort of saying it's not in the bag yet. Voting opens at 6pm today our time. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this busy season I'm so aware of how neglectful I can get about my own self care. When life feels crazy, the first thing to fall to the bottom of my priority list is ME. And I'm becoming increasingly aware of what I'm teaching my own children in this realm. So when Toye Penny reached out to share 4 ways to “Model Well-Being for Generations to Come” I knew I needed to hear what she had to say. Toye shares helpful, thoughtful and practical ways to love the next generation by loving ourselves well first. Toye Penny is a Luxury Well-Being Strategist, Author of Love “Them”, Love You More, and creator of The Love You More Method℠. She specializes in helping High Performing CEO Moms put their oxygen mask on first so they can save everyone around them. Toye is a wife, mother to 3 daughters, and she seeks to intervene in women's lives so children won't have to be the result of generational trauma passed down from their mothers. You can learn more about her work by going to ToyePenny.com. I loved chatting with Toye and hope you take as much from this conversation as I did.
