I really love minimal living. Whether it's from moving around and traveling a lot in my adult years sampling life in different cities, a desire to leave less of a negative footprint on the planet, a real resonance with the Marie Condo mindset, or a combination of all of the above - the less stuff, the better, and the more minimal and efficient the design, the more I'm drawn to it. That's why I was so impressed when I saw Sung Yoo's interview on CNBC about her essentialist approach to life. Sung is a designer and entrepreneur who, in 2022 after living in NY for 18 years, moved to Santa Monica into a 140 sq ft home. Listen in on our conversation about how some major life events (including a breakup and the death of a parent) lead her to her current practices of minimal living and essentialism.

Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! The GOP was of course messy while we were off air, and unlike Marie Condo, we do not love mess. Happy(?) Pride. On top of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation sweeping the nation, brands are really fucking up just in time for pride month. Tbh, Bud Light deserves their current sales losses on the basis of their beer sucking ass, but they've managed to piss off a large cross-section of the country with their reaction to backlash over their ad featuring a trans woman. Are people actually outraged by things like this, or are they looking for new ways to be relevant? Asking for Kid Rock's music career. Target is also fucking up - out of concern for their employees, they've pulled and diminished elements of their Pride displays in stores. Never thought we'd see the day where Bud Light and Target were in the dog house for caving to queerphobia, but here we are! RIP disposable income: as part of debt ceiling negotiations, federal student loan repayments will officially be restarting this fall. We poll the #Millennial Facebook group to see how listeners are feeling about resuming student loan payments and hear what others are doing to prepare. Everyone agrees: interest is the real killer here. If interest were taken out of the equation, we'd all have a much easier time repaying our principal balances. Critics and audiences seem to be split over HBO's newest buzz series, 'The Idol.' At what point does violence and nudity become gratuitous and unwatchable for us? Is there ever a place for it? Movie ratings are a joke, and the MPAA's ratings system is not applied consistently. This week, we're recommending 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' (Laura), 'Variety Actors on Actors: Katherine Heigl, Ellen Pompeo (Pam), and Spindrift Spiked (Andrew). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Family vloggers - are they going too far? Nikki Phillippi and her husband canceled plans to adopt from Thailand after learning they would be legally barred from showing or talking about their child for one year. Is there a lesson to be learned from the early 2000's slew of family reality TV shows? Children who grew up in these situations are now speaking out and alleging emotional, financial, and sometimes physical abuse. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grab a plastic bag and fill it with garbage. 2. Put things you want to donate into a box. 3. Anything you have in your house that you want to keep but doesn't belong in the room it's currently in, put them in a laundry basket so you can concentrate on the one space. Then put away the items in the laundry basket when the 15 minutes are up. ●   When decluttering, think about what you can implement to make each space feel good and be the most productive for its purpose. ●   Don't try to overhaul your house all at once; it gets to be too much. Just take one small space at a time and go from there. Not only will it feel more doable, but you will also start creating great habits over time.QUOTES: “If we can remove the excess, or tidy up, or clean up, it's also a freeing of the mind. The physical space helps with the mental space.” - Jenn Trepeck “It's not about not having stuff. It's about using your stuff to help you, using your stuff as tools.” - Deanna Yates“Clothes are one of those things that can be very emotional because the experience we have when wearing those clothes then stays with those clothes.” - Deanna Yates“So I think those kinds of things as we can set those little baby steps up. Then again, it all comes back to that mental clarity where it frees us up to be the better versions of ourselves. It frees us up to have a moment of, okay, things don't have to be such a panic. I don't have to be in such a rush.” - Deanna YatesRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES: Wannabe Clutter Free WebsitePodcast for Aspiring MinimalistsWannabe Clutter Free InstagramWannabe Clutter Free PinterestWannabe Clutter Free FacebookGUEST BIO:Deanna Yates is the founder and CEO of Wannabe Clutter Free and host of the popular podcast, Wannabe Minimalist. As neurodivergent creatives, we often find ourselves overwhelmed with too much stuff both in our environment and in our minds. We may be overrun with office supplies, craft supplies, and/or miscellaneous things that support our hyperfixations or latest hyperfocus. The ADHD brain is especially prone to mental clutter, and when our environment is a mess it's even harder to quiet our thoughts. On our last guest call, Nadja Carghetti shared how you can use Marie Kondo's approach to tidy your brain! Many people think you are either tidy or untidy, but the good news is that tidying is something you can learn! In Marie Kondo's book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, she shares how we can systematically tidy our space by getting rid of things that don't spark joy. Marie Kondo's method of tidying can be applied to your mind as well as your stuff and help prioritize the things we spend our mental energy on. On this episode of Embracing Intensity, we share our talk with Nadja Carghetti, former tidying coach and host of the Unleash Monday Podcast, on Tidying Up Your Brain, Marie Kondo Style! In this episode: Why people's homes reflect their life. Nadja's experience of being a multipotentialite and interested in many things. Have any of you made any goals for cleaning out the basement or maybe that pesky linen closet where more than linens are crammed and is likely where that missing birthday present you hid was swallowed up. Or maybe it's time to purge and organize the dreaded Tupperware cupboard that has turned into a daily game of Jenga? While I have tried to become more cognizant about what I hold on to and what I buy, I'm still no Marie Condo and likely never will because I have a thing for collecting what I call “roadside finds.” However, I have found over the past 15 years that I have a limit when it comes to clutter and knowing I need to purge some things from the basement is weighs on me and is overwhelming. Matter of fact, I haven't been able to clear any head space to write this podcast because our house has been a mess because of taking down Christmas decorations which always seems to move a glacial speed. But maybe a full closet or a cupboard full of shuffled Tupperware containers don't bother you. I have to say I'm a bit envy and wish I leaned more into your camp. But one thing I can't get my mind wrapped around and is a bit more extreme than that overflowing linen closet, is why so many people are paying monthly to house their belongings in storage units. This past week I was on the phone with my mom and told her that I was going to talk about storage units on the podcast. Storage units? She asked. I said yeah, they are popping up everywhere and I want to know what people are holding on to that is so important they need a storage unit. I know, I know, this sounds a bit “out there” and you're probably thinking we must have storage units to have shows like Storage Wars, which I must admit are entertaining to me as I like when they find the good stuff buried in a box that hasn't been opened for decades. But when a huge storage facility is built on land where I used to watch cows graze when I was younger, and where the furniture store where Aaron and I bought our furniture for our first house is turned into a storage unit, and a small car dealership by our last house that was previously a house and now a storage facility too, I can't help but wonder why storage units are shall we say, “trending.” In today's episode, I'm going to share how I have taken these unexpected storage units and have found a way to find delight that serve as a reminder for me today. S2E02: Foundation stories What are the stories that we build our lives on? Are they strong enough for us to build our purpose, identity and behaviour upon?  Join us for a new episode of Being Human as our hosts Jo and Peter examine the different stories that are trying to frame the deepest parts of who we are. Some of the narratives promoted by public figures in our culture—from David Attenborough, to Marie Kondo, to Jordan Peterson—may offer some helpful advice or call us to do good and noble things. But underneath all of their “what?” and “how?” answers to our questions about being human, they leave us hanging and fail to provide a satisfying answer to the deepest “why?” questions. The opening to the God story was written to challenge other ancient foundation stories, and ultimately teaches us that humans are made in the image of God. We are earthlings made from the earth, and because we are part of God's good creation, we matter. As God's image bearers, we join him in caring for our fellow humans and the rest of God's creation. Join us as we consider how Jesus brings order to the chaos and is the author of the only sufficient  foundation story for us to build our lives upon.   Prologue (00:00) 00:19  We're back for episode 2! Kirsten F owns a real estate office through which she's just started an energetic house-clearing business. She's stuck on the name. She's grateful for her new house.    00:59 Challenge: The current domain is the 12th Door. We like 12 because it's an elevated dimension. WHen we come in to clear houses, we call in energy from other dimensions. But I've realized that I don't want it to be woo-woo. I want it to be consumer. I want something like Zillow, that doesn't necessarily want the name connected to energy.  02:08 Question: So you want the name to be straightforward, not woo-woo?  02:21 I'll ask you guys, how do you feel about the 12th door? Or the name being woo-woo? 02:25 Suggestion: I think you should call yourselves ghost busters.  02:27 No. 02:35 Brad, it's probably trademarked.  02:40 Suggestion: The first thought I got was the name Clearing. Or, The Clearing.  02:43 I like that. 02:52 Question: Where do you currently get most of your leads?  03:00 No leads. We get them from word of mouth or through the agent I work with, who's high-producing.  03:19 Suggestion: If your intention is to go into organic and SEO-based lead-generation, I can definitely tell you, The 12th Door will not bring anyone in. If you can somehow say what it is you do, in the title, from an SEO standpoint, you'll do way better.  03:48 Suggestion: Distinguish yourself from clearing versus cleaning.  04:07 Suggestion: It could be in the tag that it's more straightforward. Or make the name a story idea. Use a totem. Ghost Dusters.  04:54 Suggestion: Hire a branding expert. Go through branding exercises. To nail it, companies sometimes spend millions, we can't do it in 8 minutes. 05:47 Suggestion: Scale it. People have this desire, so it's probably worth investing to start out with a solid brand and solid name recognition.  06:21 Suggestion: Think about it on every level, as a total house clean. I like the clean slate, that you had mentioned earlier.  06:40 Suggestion: You come across as very credible and genuine, I don't think you need to apologize for the woo-woo. Give them the facts. Let the skeptics go off on their own. 07:17 Suggestion: This is a good time for you. You can trend hack off of Marie Condo.  07:52 Suggestion: Everyone is raving about her stuff. Not everyone has the time to do it.  07:59 Suggestion: It might be that Marie Condo's message wouldn't resonate with people if she led with, "I pray for your house." But people do resonate with the tidying up thing, it's more tangible. Then once they're hooked, they read the book. It's about what gets them in the door. It's about what they need to hear.  08:18 I hear that, and I see so much potential. It makes think about partnering with her or something.  08:57 Suggestion: Think of maybe franchising it, and actually partner with others.  09:10 I think of making it as mainstream as Zillow.    Three Key Points: Trend hack!  You’ve got to nail the name Hire a branding expert; if you have big dreams, it will be worth it

Today Shana and Theresa Girl Talk on the state of #metoo after tuning into 1A's coverage of CBS's handling of the allegations against Les Moonves and how corporations are preparing across the board for continued allegations to surface. Jacinta Bunnell brightens the studio with her creativity and enthusiasm for her feelings. Jacinta is an artist, activist, author and co-founder of B.R.A.W.L. She shares how studying Philosophy helped to shape her ability to think critically and how that in conjunction with taking care of children helped her to see how important it is to feel safe to color outside the lines. Speaking of, she has 4 very important, Queer positive and gender bending, coloring books that are opening up the lines and the boxes that kids have historically found themselves in. She recently began supporting Planned Parenthood through her art activism where she helps young people create art telling their story about how Planned Parenthood has helped them. You can see all that goodness at iluvplannedparenthood on Instagram. Finally, if you need helping sifting through belongings and getting rid of what you no longer need, Jacinta is the Marie Condo of the Hudson Valley. Jenny Shulkin of OoLaLoom joins us and talks about how she got into weaving and the intricacies of weaving and dying. How she is finding her way in her craft staying true to herself and the way she wants to be weaving, creating and learning and evolving the business side of her work, and how she stays motivated and pushes through or gives herself permission to stop when she wants to. Self care today takes us backward, or forward, stuffed animals and how slowing down is important for everything to continue to exist, including YOU! Tune into the podcast Secret Feminist Agenda that Shana recommends if you want to learn more about the art of slow everything and how stuffed animals may save your health and your sanity. Theresa talks about mantra...again, and one of her favorite musicians, Erika Wennerstrom, and how her lyrics have been her mantra when times get tough. Erika has a new-ish album out that is all about self-love, yeah! Go and get it and watch those mantras running in your head.
